Catterall vs. Eubank Breakdown & Prediction
When Arnold Barboza Jr. upset the odds and defeated Jack Catterall for the Interim WBO super lightweight title earlier this year, it humanized the British technician and proved that his tricky southpaw ways can be overcome.
Don’t get me wrong, though, ‘El Gato’ is no easy outing, and with his only two career losses to date (Undisputed title bout vs. Josh Taylor, and Barboza Jr.), both presenting outcomes that could’ve been scored either way, nobody has truly dominated the boxing pride of Lancashire.
In step, Harlem Eubank, the nephew of the legendary Chris Eubank Sr, who will become Catterall’s first opponent at 147lbs (welterweight) this weekend, and an all-new challenge that the former title challenger will be looking to bounce back against.
What’s truly fascinating about this contest is that both fighters have similar styles. Eubank and Catterall equally enjoy fighting off the back foot, by accepting their position as counter strikers who love to probe jabs and utilize precise footwork to gain the upper hand. Moreover, this style rarely delivers fight-ending blows, as stoppage victories often arise through accumulated strikes rather than one-punch knockouts.
Styles Make Fights
Given the similarity in approach, Eubank’s attempt at stepping up a level might prove difficult against the more experienced Catterall. He might be the nephew of Eubank Sr, but he’s still unproven at a world level, and a southpaw foe with matched excellent footwork might force the younger, unbeaten fighter into some unknown moments.
With that said, we have to look at the bigger picture, and for me, size, hunger, cardio, and confidence could also be the difference maker, and all of these factors favor the underdog, Eubank!
Catterall’s experience doesn’t necessarily give him an advantage because he’s been there, done that, and seen it all, to know how to move up in weight class where the opponents will be a lot bigger and hit harder. Eubank will be hungry for world-level status; he’s younger, has been through fewer wars, and more importantly, is the undefeated fighter who is naturally at this weight class.
Then I look at the impressive cardio and high energy that Eubank has displayed at welterweight. This is notably greater than Catterall at super lightweight, so now that he’s at 147lb, it’s easy to visualize Eubank running away with rounds in the second half of the fight behind higher output and more gas in the tank.
How to Bet on Catterall vs. Eubank
The available odds are fairly placing Catterall as the betting favorite because he has proven himself at this level; however, I’m not so sure the boxing odds have accurately reflected the variables that favor Eubank on Saturday.
In a 12-round fight that could become a consistent battle of technical wit and ultimately result in a split decision, how can we not take a pop on the underdog here?
The extra 7lbs could certainly help Catterall, who notably seemed faded at the end of recent fights. On the flipside, it could backfire dramatically, as the larger opponent in Eubank might not have the world experience, but he certainly owns the greater experience at welterweight, and with a polished gas tank, we’re betting on the underdog because the unknowns surrounding Catterall just aren’t showing any value on the boxing betting lines.
