Converts on first save opportunity
Wells picked up the save Thursday against the Red Sox. He didn't strike out a batter over a perfect inning.
ANALYSIS
Usual closer Yennier Cano worked part of the eighth inning, retiring a pair of batters before Cionel Perez closed out the frame, leaving Wells to take the mound in the ninth. The starter-turned-reliever delivered a perfect inning to secure his first save from 2021. Though Cano should be expected to handle most of the ninth inning work until Felix Bautista (elbow) returns, Wells could earn more high-leverage work if he continues to produce.

Recalled to help bullpen
Wells was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells was the Orioles' best starter in the first half, but he struggled out of the gate in the second half and eventually found himself in the minors. The righty has been pitching in relief with Norfolk and will be used in that role with Baltimore down the stretch.
Sep 21, 2023
Could get late-season call-up
Manager Brandon Hyde said Thursday that Wells is a potential late-season call-up, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells has been working exclusively in relief for Triple-A Norfolk over the last month and Hyde told reporters that his arsenal is experiencing an overall uptick in that role. The 29-year-old right-hander struggled his way out of the Orioles' major-league rotation in late July, but he could return as a fresh bullpen arm sometime during the final stretch of regular-season games.
Sep 12, 2023
Back in action at Triple-A
Wells (arm) made two appearances out of the Triple-A Norfolk bullpen last week, covering 1.2 innings while giving up two runs on one hit and two walks before striking out two.
ANALYSIS
Before taking the mound last Tuesday and then again on Friday, Wells hadn't pitched for Norfolk since Aug. 25 while battling arm fatigue. The 29-year-old looks to be healthy again and could rejoin the big club later in September if he strings together a few more quality appearances at Triple-A, but if he returns to Baltimore, he'll likely be deployed as a reliever. Wells owns a 3.80 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over 113.2 innings in the majors this season, but he struggled mightily in his first three outings coming out of the All-Star break before being dropped from the rotation and ultimately sent to the minors.

Arm fatigue at Triple-A
Wells hasn't pitched at Triple-A Norfolk since Aug. 25 due to right arm fatigue, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The smart guess is that it was probably fatigue contributing to Wells' midseason struggles and subsequent demotion. He was recently moved to the bullpen at Norfolk and has had trouble bouncing back after outings. The Orioles are hoping he'll be able to pitch again soon, but realistically they can't be counting on him to contribute down the stretch.
Aug 22, 2023
Joining Triple-A bullpen
Wells was promoted Tuesday from Double-A Bowie to Triple-A Norfolk, where he will pitch out of the bullpen, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's been an interesting season for Wells, who went five-plus innings in 18 straight starts for the big club from April 3 through July 8. From there, his productivity fell off over three more MLB appearances before he was optioned to Double-A on July 30. This latest transaction suggests Baltimore is giving Wells a chance to be a part of the big-league bullpen down the stretch, so those who have been stashing him in hopes he rejoins the Orioles' rotation may need to look elsewhere.
Aug 10, 2023
Taking ball at Double-A on Saturday
Wells will start for Double-A Bowie on Saturday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells was optioned to Bowie in late July as a bit of a reset after getting roughed up in his first three second-half outings. He allowed one run over 3.1 innings in his first start for Bowie this past Saturday and will take the ball for them again on six days' rest. Cole Irvin is starting for the Orioles on Saturday as part of a six-man rotation and it's not a coincidence that he's on the same schedule as Wells, as the hope is the righty will eventually slide back into the big-league rotation. When that could happen, however, remains up in the air.
Aug 5, 2023
Starting Saturday at Double-A
Wells, who is slated to start for Double-A Bowie on Saturday, will be given a little more rest between his next outings, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
It sounds like Wells will only go three innings Saturday as the organization hits the reset button. Rest is will be a big part of this reset process, as manager Brandon Hyde said Wells likely won't take the ball again in the minors until next weekend. One of the biggest surprises of the first half, Wells allowed 11 runs in nine innings across his first three starts out of the All-Star break. He still has a 3.80 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 111:33 K:BB over 113.2 innings in the majors this season.
Jul 30, 2023
Sent to Double-A
The Orioles optioned Wells to Double-A Bowie on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Wells surrendered three runs over 2.2 frames Saturday against the Yankees and has an 11.00 ERA and 8:9 K:BB in three starts since the All-Star break, leading Baltimore to send him to the minors to straighten things out. The right-hander had a 3.18 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 103:24 K:BB across 104.2 innings during the first half of the season, and the Orioles are likely hoping he can quickly regain that form in the minors and rejoin the big-league rotation.
Jul 29, 2023
Chased after 2.2 frames
Wells (7-6) took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks over 2.2 innings in an 8-3 loss to the Yankees. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Wells was pulled after throwing 63 pitches Saturday and failed to make it through the third inning. The outing added to an already concerning trend for Wells, who has thrown 4.1 innings and 2.0 innings in his last two appearances. Despite the short start, Wells issued three walks, marking his fifth straight outing allowing multiple walks. Though Wells has faced some of baseball's best offenses in his last three starts in the Dodgers, Rays and Yankees, fantasy managers should be cautious with Wells moving forward, especially considering he's projected to face the Blue Jays next time out.
Jul 24, 2023
Another short outing Sunday
Wells allowed three runs on one hit and four walks while striking out five Sunday against the Rays. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Wells issued a season-high four walks, and it was just the second time this year he's issued more than two walks in a start. He also hit two batters and was unconventionally wild. Despite the control issues, Wells managed to allow just one hit which happened to be a two-run homer by Yandy Diaz in the fifth inning. He's now gone under five innings in consecutive starts but still holds a career-best 3.65 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 110:30 K:BB in 111 innings and projects for a matchup with the Yankees next weekend.
Jul 19, 2023
Early exit against LA
Wells (7-5) took the loss Tuesday, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks over two innings against the Dodgers. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
It was the shortest outing of the year for Wells in his first start out of the All-Star break, as the Dodgers put up a five spot in the second inning. The loss ended a solid run for Wells, who'd logged quality starts in five of his previous six outings, posting a 2.97 ERA over that span. Overall, the 28-year-old right-hander sports a 3.54 ERA with a 0.98 WHIP and 105:26 K:BB across 18 starts (106.2 innings) this season. Wells is currently lined up for another tough matchup this weekend against the Rays in Tampa.
Jul 9, 2023
Earns seventh win
Wells (7-4) earned the win Saturday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over six innings against the Twins. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Wells held the Twins to one run over the first five innings, which came across following a wild pitch from the right-hander. He would later allow a second run on a Donovan Solano double in the sixth before striking out the next two batters to end the inning and eventually earn his seventh win of the season. Wells has now allowed two runs in six of his last seven starts and has gone six innings in three straight.
Jul 4, 2023
Settles for no-decision Monday
Wells allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four batters over six innings in a no-decision against the Yankees on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Wells kept the Yankees off the scoreboard for four frames before Anthony Volpe and Kyle Higashioka tagged him for back-to-back solo shots in the fifth. Wells finished off that inning and completed one more to pick up his second straight quality start, but the Yankees rallied late to take the win and hand the right-hander a no-decision. Though Wells has given up at least one long ball in five of his past seven starts, he's been reliable and effective overall during that stretch, going at least five innings in each of those appearances and compiling a 2.81 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 45:10 K:BB over 41.2 frames.
Jun 28, 2023
Delivers quality start in loss
Wells (6-4) took the loss Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over six innings against the Reds. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Wells was solid again Tuesday, but the Orioles mustered just one run of support against Andrew Abbott in a 3-1 loss. The 28-year-old Wells hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last six starts (35.2 innings), pitching to a 2.81 ERA in that span. His ERA is down to 3.21 with a league-leading 0.88 WHIP and 95:20 K:BB across 15 starts (92.2 innings) this season. Wells is currently lined up for a road matchup with the Yankees in his next outing.
Jun 21, 2023
Struggles early in loss
Wells (6-3) took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks over five innings against the Rays. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Wells was a mess in the second inning, surrendering back-to-back homers to Randy Arozarena and Isaac Paredes to lead things off before allowing Manuel Margot to reach on a fielding error in the next at-bat. The right-hander ended up being charged with two errors in the inning as the Rays tacked on another two runs to make it 4-0. Fortunately for fantasy owners, only two runs were charged to Wells as he made it five consecutive starts in which he's allowed two earned runs or fewer. He was, however, credited with the loss Wednesday, snapping his three-game winning streak in June.
Jun 15, 2023
Fans eight in win
Wells (6-2) earned the win Thursday, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over 6.2 innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Wells was able to keep a dangerous Blue Jays lineup at bay for most of the afternoon, with the exception of Danny Jensen, who took the right-hander deep in the third and fifth innings to provide Toronto with their only runs in the contest. The right-hander has now won each of his last three starts for Baltimore and has struck out at least seven batters in six of his last seven. Wells has also held opponents to two earned runs or fewer in four straight, lowering his ERA to a very respectable 3.20 on the season.
Jun 10, 2023
Records win Friday
Wells (5-2) earned the win Friday, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over 6.2 innings against Kansas City. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Wells won his second straight decision and was able to work through a weak Kansas City lineup with relative ease, allowing just one extra-base hit before being pulled with the bases loaded in the seventh inning. The 28-year-old has allowed two earned runs or less in five of his last seven starts, and sports a pristine 3.24 ERA on the year. He has quickly become major asset in a Baltimore rotation desperate for quality innings. Wells is scheduled to face the Blue Jays at home next week.
Jun 4, 2023
Strikes out nine in win
Wells (4-2) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine over 5.1 innings to earn the win Sunday over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Wells got through five scoreless innings while allowing just four baserunners, but he faded in the sixth. Blake Sabol ended Wells' outing with a two-run home run, but the Orioles' lead was never in danger. The nine strikeouts were a season high for Wells, who picked up his first win in four starts. The right-hander has a 3.29 ERA with an excellent 0.85 WHIP and solid 70:14 K:BB through 12 outings (11 starts) spanning 68.1 innings. Baltimore is using its off day Monday to reset the rotation by skipping the No. 5 spot, so Wells should pitch on normal rest versus the Royals in his next start.
May 29, 2023
Takes loss despite quality start
Wells (3-2) took the loss Monday, allowing one run on four hits across six innings during a 5-0 defeat to the Guardians. He struck out seven and didn't issue a walk.
ANALYSIS
Wells notched his first quality start since April 21 and just his second of the season, but he still took the loss as Baltimore's offense was held scoreless by Cleveland's pitching staff. The right-hander didn't give up a home run to the Guardians, but he has served up 13 over 63 innings this year, including nine over six May starts. Despite issues with the long ball, Wells still sports a strong 3.29 ERA coupled with an elite 61:12 K:BB and remains an integral part of the Orioles' starting rotation. His next start is tentatively scheduled for the finale of a three-game weekend set in San Francisco.
May 25, 2023
Escapes with no-decision Wednesday
Wells didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 9-6 comeback win over the Yankees, surrendering five runs on five hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks over five innings. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Gleyber Torres took him deep twice and Isiah Kiner-Falefa added a two-run shot in the fifth inning, but Wells got taken off the hook for his second loss when the Orioles erupted for eight runs in the seventh. The right-hander's 3.47 ERA and 0.84 WHIP on the season have been excellent, but they hide a 5.02 FIP and unsightly 2.05 HR/9 -- he's served up 13 homers in only 57 innings. Wells lines up to next take the mound early next week at home against the Guardians.
May 19, 2023
Fans seven in no-decision
Wells allowed three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out seven batters over five innings in a no-decision against the Angels on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Wells wasn't quite as sharp as he was in allowing just one run over 12 innings across his previous two starts, but the three runs he yielded Thursday were understandable as they all came on homers from Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout. Wells did impress by inducing 18 swinging strikes, and he fell one shy of his season high with seven punchouts. The right-hander has blossomed in his third MLB campaign, posting a 2.94 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 46:10 K:BB over 52 frames.
May 14, 2023
Tosses gem against Pirates
Wells (3-1) earned the win over Pittsburgh on Saturday, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out eight batters over seven scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Wells was fantastic in the victory, giving up just one hit -- a second-inning single. He retired 17 straight batters after that base knock before appearing to run out of steam with back-to-back two-out walks in the seventh frame. Wells racked up an impressive 18 swinging strikes and punched out a career-high eight batters in his second quality start of the campaign. The right-hander is in the midst of a career-best season, posting a 2.68 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 39:9 K:BB over 42 innings.
May 7, 2023
Solid in no decision
Wells did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing a run on three hits and a walk over five innings against Atlanta. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Wells pitched well against a powerful Atlanta lineup, allowing just a first-inning home run to Matt Olson in an eventual 3-2 extra-innings loss. It was an encouraging performance for Wells after he allowed four runs on three homers in his last outing against the Royals. The 28-year-old right-hander is 2-1 with a 3.15 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 31:7 K:BB through his first 40 innings this season.
May 3, 2023
Secures second straight win
Wells (2-1) got the win over the Royals on Tuesday, allowing four runs on three hits and three walks while striking out four over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Wells was punished by the long ball in Tuesday's outing, as all three hits he gave up were home runs. Bobby Witt and MJ Melendez took him deep in the first inning to put up three quick runs for the Royals. He wound up retiring 14 of the next 16 batters following the second home run before Salvador Perez lead off the sixth with a solo blast to center. Wells got plenty of support from his offense, leading to second consecutive win for the 28-year-old. He's fared well overall so far, posting a 3.34 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 27:6 K:BB over 25 innings. A tougher test lies ahead for Wells, who is projected to face Atlanta on the road over the weekend.
Apr 26, 2023
Solid in winning effort
Wells (1-1) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over 5.2 against the Red Sox. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Wells was sharp Wednesday, allowing just a pair of runs while recording a season-high seven strikeouts en route to his first win of the year. Over his last two starts, Wells has allowed just two runs on seven hits in 12.2 innings while punching out 12. He lowered his ERA to 2.79 with a 0.72 WHIP and an excellent 23:3 K:BB. Wells currently lines up to face the Royals in his next outing.
Apr 22, 2023
Tosses seven scoreless innings
Wells did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing zero runs on three hits and one walk over seven innings during a 2-1 win over the Tigers. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Wells didn't allow a baserunner to reach second as he cruised through seven shutout frames against the Tigers. He was in line for his first win of the year thanks to a solo shot from Austin Hays in the bottom of the seventh, but the Tigers were able to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the ninth. Through four starts (23.1 innings), Wells sports a 2.70 ERA and a 0.69 WHIP with a strong 16:2 K:BB.
Apr 15, 2023
Gives up three in no-decision
Wells did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over 5.1 innings against the White Sox. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Wells served up a solo home run to Jake Burger in the second to open the scoring but was able to settle down and tossed three scoreless frames before getting into trouble in the sixth. The right-hander allowed four of the first five hitters to reach in the inning and was pulled after an RBI single from Eloy Jimenez extended Chicago's lead to 3-1. After a scoreless five innings in his first start of the year, Wells has given up seven runs over his past two outings (11.1 innings), but he did post a 9:1 K:BB during those contests.
Apr 9, 2023
Struggles in loss
Wells (0-1) yielded four runs on six hits through six innings in Sunday's 3-5 loss to the Yankees. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
In his latest outing, Wells got off to a rocky start allowing two hits and an RBI single in the first inning. The 28-year-old settled in, showing impressive efficiency throwing 60 of 91 pitches for strikes. However, Wells could not avoid the long ball, yielding a solo homer to Aaron Judge in the third and a two-run shot to Franchy Cordero in the fifth. Wells now holds a 3.27 ERA with 10 strikeouts through 11 innings. Despite those numbers, the recent call-up of Grayson Rodriguez may return Wells to a relief role once starter Kyle Bradish (foot) returns from injury.
Apr 3, 2023
Fires five no-hit frames
Wells struck out two batters over five no-hit innings during Monday's win over Texas. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
After Kyle Bradish (foot) left in the second inning, Wells ended up covering most of the innings in Baltimore's combined one-hitter. Wells allowed just one baserunner and never faced any trouble in his first outing of the year. He needed just 47 pitches (33 strikes) to cruise through his five frames.
Mar 26, 2023
Makes case for rotation spot
Wells allowed an unearned run on two hits and struck out two over five innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game versus the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Wells has had shaky ratios with a 5.74 ERA and 1.28 WHIP over 15.2 innings this spring, but he's also posted a 16:2 K:BB. The Orioles' rotation still has two spots up for grabs, with Wells, Grayson Rodriguez and Kyle Bradish all in contention. Of those three pitchers, Wells' numbers look the best on the surface, though he'd also be the easiest to move to a bullpen role if the Orioles want to open the year with all of them in the majors. For now, Wells is stretched out as a starter, but his placement to start the season will likely come down to a decision just before Opening Day.
Mar 2, 2023
Set for Grapefruit debut Saturday
Wells (shoulder) will make his Grapefruit League debut Saturday against the Braves, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Orioles have been slow-playing Wells in camp after he ended last season with right shoulder inflammation. He's been feeling fine, though, and is ready to test things out in game action. The right-hander is competing for a spot in the Orioles' rotation, so he's surely eager to get going.
Feb 22, 2023
Facing hitters early in camp
Wells (shoulder) faced hitters Wednesday in a live batting practice session, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though the Orioles could slow play Wells into the Grapefruit League pitching schedule, the fact that he's already facing hitters in his second week at camp suggests that he reported to spring training with no limitations on the health front. Before landing on the injured list last September with right shoulder inflammation and spending the final two weeks on the shelf, Wells proved reliable in a starting role, putting together a 7-7 record to go with a 4.25 ERA and 1.14 WHIP and 76:28 K:BB across 103.2 innings. Despite his quality 2022 season, Wells may still have to battle for a rotation spot in spring training after Baltimore added two more battled-tested veteran starters (Kyle Gibson and Cole Irvin) in the offseason. Top prospect Grayson Rodriguez is also likely to be included in the Opening Day rotation, potentially leaving Wells to vie with the likes of Kyle Bradish, Dean Kremer and Austin Voth for one of two remaining spots.
Sep 23, 2022
Won't return this season
Wells (shoulder) won't pitch again in 2022, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells landed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation Friday, but the move was backdated to Sept. 20. The right-hander would have been eligible to pitch during the Orioles' final regular-season game, but he'll be shut down for the remainder of the year. Mike Baumann will take Wells' place in the starting rotation Saturday against Houston while Spenser Watkins pitches out of the bullpen.
Sep 23, 2022
Lands on injured list
Wells was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation Friday, retroactive to Sept. 20.
ANALYSIS
Wells struggled mightily against the Tigers on Monday, giving up five runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three in three innings to take the loss. His injury may have contributed to his woes, and he'll be sidelined for at least two weeks. While the right-hander will be eligible to return for the final game of the regular season, it's possible that he's held out for the remainder of the season, especially if the Orioles are eliminated from postseason contention in the coming weeks. Spenser Watkins was called up Friday and will likely take Wells' place in the rotation.
Sep 20, 2022
Mauled by Tigers
Wells (7-7) took the loss Monday, coughing up five runs on four hits and three walks over three-plus innings in an 11-0 rout at the hands of the Tigers. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander wasn't doing too badly until the fourth inning, when Detroit put its first four batters aboard to chase Wells from the game en route to a five-run frame. The 28-year-old has been tagged for eight runs in nine innings over three starts in September, and Wells appears to be fading badly down the stretch in his first season as a full-time starter in the majors.
Sep 14, 2022
Allows two runs over four innings
Wells did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on two hits and no walks over four innings against the Nationals. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Wells worked his pitch count up to 50 after tossing 34 in his first start back from the injured list Sept. 7. Luke Voit and Riley Adams each tagged Wells for solo home runs, but he was otherwise effective as those were the only two batters the 28-year-old allowed to reach base on the evening. He will take a 3.93 ERA into his next start, which will likely come against Detroit next week.
Sep 12, 2022
Staying in rotation
Wells is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Nationals in Washington.
ANALYSIS
Though he covered just two innings in his return from the 60-day injured list Sept. 7 against the Blue Jays, Wells looks like he'll continue to get progressively stretched out in his subsequent turns through the rotation. After his 34-pitch appearance last week, Wells probably can't be expected to toss more than 50-to-60 pitches Wednesday, making him a rather unappealing fantasy option in weekly leagues even in a favorable matchup.
Sep 8, 2022
Allows one run in return
Wells (oblique) allowed a run on two hits and two walks while striking out one over one inning in a no-decision versus the Blue Jays on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Wells returned from a five-week absence to serve as an opener in Wednesday's contest. The right-hander did alright, throwing 20 of 34 pitches for strikes, including five whiffs. He averaged 93.1 mph on his fastball, down slightly from his season average. Wells should have the opportunity to stretch out over the last month of the season. He owns a 3.91 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 69:25 K:BB through 96.2 innings over 21 starts, though he won't generate much fantasy interest until he can complete five frames again.
Sep 7, 2022
Officially activated from IL
The Orioles activated Wells (oblique) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Wells will be making his surprise return to the big club Wednesday, despite having made just one rehab start at High-A Aberdeen following a five-week stay on the IL. When he was healthy earlier in the season, Wells was arguably the Orioles' top starting pitcher, as he turned in a 3.90 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 94.2 innings across his 20 outings. Because he tossed only 31 pitches in his lone rehab start, Wells could be capped at around three or four innings Wednesday, with Dean Kremer potentially piggybacking him out of the bullpen. Wells should gradually get stretched out over his subsequent starts and shouldn't face many workload restrictions by the second half of September.
Sep 7, 2022
Starting Wednesday
Wells (oblique) will be reinstated from the 15-day injured list to start Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Dean Kremer was initially listed as the Orioles' probable starter Wednesday, while Wells was expected to require at least one more rehab appearance prior to rejoining the Orioles. However, Wells will ultimately be activated Wednesday, but it's possible that he serves as an opener since he tossed just 31 pitches during his most recent appearance in the minors. It's not yet clear how the team plans to use Kremer, but it's possible that he's available as a primary pitcher Wednesday.
Sep 4, 2022
Needs another rehab outing
Wells (oblique) threw a bullpen session at Camden Yards on Sunday and is expected to make at least one more minor-league rehab appearance before being activated from the 15-day injured list, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells returned to Baltimore after he made a rehab start at High-A Aberdeen on Friday, when he struck out three over 2.1 innings while allowing one run on one hit and no walks. The right-hander checked out fine physically following the 31-pitch outing, but he'll still need at least one more tune-up outing before being activated. Kubatko notes that Wells is likely to rejoin the Orioles as a multi-inning reliever, given that Baltimore's current five starters are performing well in addition to the fact that a bullpen role would require a shorter buildup program for the 28-year-old. Wells is used to working out of the bullpen, having made all 44 of his appearances with Baltimore in 2021 as a reliever.
Sep 1, 2022
Rehab assignment on tap
Wells (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment at High-A Aberdeen on Friday, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Tuesday and will face hitters in a rehab appearance to close out the week. The Orioles haven't yet decided whether the right-hander will return as a starter or reliever, but he's trending in the right direction regardless of what role he'll ultimately play upon his return.
Aug 30, 2022
Completes 30-pitch 'pen session
Wells (oblique) completed a 30-pitch bullpen session Tuesday and is expected to throw a simulated game or pitch in a rehab game at High-A Aberdeen as soon as this weekend, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The side session followed a simulated game a few days earlier, when Wells faced hitters for the first time since landing on the 15-day injured list July 28 with a Grade 1 left oblique strain. Manager Brandon Hyde said Tuesday that a decision of whether Wells will return from the IL as a reliever or starter hasn't been made, but at the moment, Baltimore doesn't have as pressing of a need for him in the rotation as anticipated when he was first shut down with the oblique strain. Heading into Tuesday's game against the Guardians, the Orioles have received five consecutive quality starts.
Aug 28, 2022
Sim game on tap
Wells (oblique) is scheduled to throw a simulated game Sunday or Monday, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells returned to mound work last week with a couple bullpen sessions, and he's now poised to face live batters. It remains to be seen whether the 28-year-old returns as a starter or a reliever, but he's closing in on a rehab assignment regardless.
Aug 25, 2022
Throws another bullpen
Wells (oblique) threw a bullpen session Thursday, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells resumed mound work with a bullpen session Tuesday, and he felt good following Thursday's throwing session. He's expected to throw live batting practice soon and is expected to have a better timetable for his return afterward. The Orioles aren't yet sure whether the right-hander will return as a starter or reliever.

Gets back on mound
Wells (oblique) completed a bullpen session Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells relayed afterward that he felt good while stepping on the mound for the first time since being placed on the 15-day injured list July 28 with a Grade 1 left oblique strain. He'll still need to complete a few more side sessions and throw a live batting practice session or two before heading out on a minor-league rehab assignment, but the Orioles remain optimistic he'll return in 2022. Wells will presumably prepare to rejoin Baltimore in a starting role, but any setback or slowdown in his rehab program at this stage of the season might force him to come back as a reliever.

Playing catch Saturday
Wells (oblique) played catch on the field ahead of Saturday's game against the Rays, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells has been unavailable since the end of July due to a Grade 1 oblique strain, but he's been cleared to throw off flat ground. It seems likely that he'll spend more than the minimum of 15 days on the injured list, and it's not yet clear when he'll be in the mix to return to game action.
Jul 30, 2022
Managing Grade 1 oblique strain
Wells has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 oblique strain, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
While manager Brandon Hyde downplayed the severity of Wells' injury, the Orioles' skipper said that the right-hander will need some time to recover. Wells landed on the injured list Thursday, but it seems likely that he'll spend more than the minimum of 15 days on the IL. A better timetable for his return should come into focus once he's cleared to begin a throwing program.
Jul 28, 2022
Placed on 15-day IL
Wells (side) was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday, Dan Connolly of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells left his start Wednesday against the Rays early with what was described as lower-back discomfort and he will now be away from the team for two weeks while on the IL. His official diagnosis was left side discomfort, but no exact information on the severity of the injury has been provided. Logan Gillaspie and Beau Sulser were both recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday.
Jul 27, 2022
Exits with back injury
Wells was removed from Wednesday's start against the Rays with lower-back discomfort, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander surrendered four earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and zero walks before being lifted during the fifth inning. It's unclear if the injury will affect Wells' availability for his next turn through the rotation, which tentatively lines up for Monday at Texas.
Jul 23, 2022
Burned by long ball
Wells (7-6) allowed five earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four across five innings to take the loss Friday against the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Four of the five runs that Wells surrendered came from a pair of home runs by Aaron Judge. While the long ball sunk his outing, it marked only the second time this season that Wells has been taken deep multiple times in a start. Overall, Wells has maintained a 3.69 ERA and 63:23 K:BB across 90.1 innings for the campaign.
Jul 15, 2022
Coughs up three runs
Wells (7-5) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over 5.2 frames Friday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Wells turned in three scoreless innings to begin the contest before Yu Chang hit his first of two RBI doubles in the fourth. The 6-foot-8 righty has allowed three runs in each of his last two outings after yielding a combined three runs over his previous four. He's now sporting a 3.38 ERA with a 59:21 K:BB through 85.1 frames.
Jul 9, 2022
Allows three runs Friday
Wells allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three in four innings during Friday's win over the Angels. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Wells gave up just three runs in 22 innings over his last four starts, but he was less effective during Friday's matchup. He gave up a three-run homer in the top of the third inning and was in line for the loss when he exited the game, but he was able to settle for a no-decision since the Orioles mounted a late comeback. Friday's start snapped a streak of five consecutive wins for Wells, but he's had relatively sustained success over the last month and a half. The righty tentatively lines up to make his next start on the road against Tampa Bay next Friday.
Jul 4, 2022
Strikes out seven in win
Wells (7-4) gave up one earned run on three hits and a walk while striking out seven over six innings to earn the win in a 3-1 victory over the Twins on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Wells had his best start of the season, tallying a career-high seven strikeouts and 90 pitches. The 27-year-old right-hander has been dealing as of late, having only given up three runs over his past four starts. Wells' season-long 3.09 ERA and 1.00 WHIP are pleasant surprises for his first year pitching out of a starter's role. His 5.6 K/9 rate coming into the game is well below league-average but his fastball spin ranks in the 94th percentile according to Baseball Savant, which bodes well for his ability to get batted ball outs. Look for Wells to start on Friday against the Angels.
Jun 28, 2022
Allows only one hit in win
Wells (6-4) earned the win over Seattle on Monday, allowing one run on one hit and no walks while striking out three batters.
ANALYSIS
Wells had a perfect game going in the fifth inning before Cal Raleigh broke it up with a solo home run with two outs in that frame. The right-handed hurler got one more out, then called it a night after 63 pitches. That held true to the report that Wells would be on a limited pitch count for the contest after he tossed a season-high 94 pitches his last time out. In contrast to that previous appearance, Wells demonstrated excellent control Monday, throwing 41 of 63 pitches for strikes and avoiding issuing any walks for the first time in six starts. He's won each of his past five decisions, registering a 1.97 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 18:10 K:BB over 32 innings covering six starts during that span.
Jun 27, 2022
May be on limited pitch count
Wells will "be held back a bit" in Monday's start against Seattle, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells threw a season-high 94 pitchers in his prior outing, which came Wednesday against the Nationals. He particularly struggled with his control as he walked four batters across only five innings. As a result, he may be on a pitch count Monday, though no specific plans were revealed. Wells has worked at least five innings in each of his last three starts, though he began the season by completing fewer than five frames in three of his seven appearances.
Jun 23, 2022
Overcomes shaky control
Wells (5-4) allowed three hits and four walks while striking out four across five scoreless innings to earn the win Wednesday against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Wells walked two to load the bases in the third inning but he struck out Luis Garcia to escape the jam. Wells was solid otherwise, though he needed 95 pitches to record 15 outs. After struggling to work deep into games to begin the campaign, Wells has worked at least five frames in five of his last six starts. He has a 3.34 ERA on the season, though that's paired with only a 40:16 K:BB across 64.2 innings.
Jun 17, 2022
Picks up fourth win
Wells (4-4) allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk while striking out three across six innings to earn the win Thursday against Toronto.
ANALYSIS
Wells allowed a solo home run to Teoscar Hernandez but otherwise held the Blue Jays in check. As has been the case, he was reliant upon inducing soft contact and boasts a strikeout rate of just 15.1 percent on the campaign. Despite that, Wells has turned in three quality starts in his last four outings and has a 3.62 ERA across 59.2 innings for the season.
Jun 11, 2022
Picks up third win
Wells (3-4) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four over six innings, earning the win Saturday over the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Wells picked up his third quality start in this contest, including his second in his last three starts, though it wasn't his sharpest outing. The Royals scored once in the first inning and twice in the fourth before the Orioles' offense picked up the pace to pull ahead. Wells threw 60 of 84 pitches for strikes in this contest as he continues to adapt to a starter's workload. He's posted a 3.86 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and a 33:11 K:BB through 53.2 innings in 12 starts. The right-hander is scheduled for a tough road start versus the Blue Jays next week.
Jun 5, 2022
No-decision Saturday
Wells didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 5-4 win over the Guardians, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Both the hits Wells allowed left the yard, but that was the story of the game for both offenses as they combined for nine hits and five homers in total. The right-hander tossed 62 pitches (42 strikes) before giving way to Keegan Akin, but the duo aren't working in a strict tandem as Wells has worked at least five innings in five of his last eight starts. He'll carry a 3.78 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 29:9 K:BB through 47.2 innings into his next outing.
May 30, 2022
Shines in big win
Wells (2-4) allowed just two hits and a walk with three strikeouts in six innings, earning the win Monday versus the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox offense couldn't do much of anything against Wells, who threw 64 of his 88 pitches for strikes. The Orioles have been cautious with the right-hander in his first season as a starter in the majors -- he's only completed six innings in two of his 10 starts. Efficiency is the key for the 27-year-old, who sports a 3.71 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 28:7 K:BB across 43.2 innings overall. Wells' next start is expected to be at home versus the Guardians this weekend.
May 26, 2022
Takes loss despite solid effort
Wells (1-4) took the loss Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits and zero walks over five innings against the Yankees. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Wells was lights out through three innings, but he allowed a leadoff double to Aaron Judge and an RBI single to Miguel Andujar in the fourth. Another run came around to score on a throwing error from catcher Adley Rutschman, but Wells was able to limit the damage by getting back-to-back groundouts to end the inning. The right-hander sports a 4.30 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP through 37.2 innings, but his lack of strikeouts (25) has limited his fantasy upside to start the season.
May 21, 2022
Allows three runs in no-decision
Wells allowed three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out four in 4.2 innings during Friday's win over the Rays. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
After giving up just two runs in 11 innings over his first two starts in May, Wells has been less effective recently by allowing six runs in 8.2 innings over his last two outings. The right-hander was able to settle for the no-decision in Friday's 13-inning game, but he snapped his streak of five consecutive starts without issuing a walk. Wells projects to make his next start on the road against the Yankees on Wednesday.
May 15, 2022
Gives up eight hits in loss
Wells (1-3) allowed three runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out two in four innings to take the loss Sunday against the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Wells had lasted at least five innings in each of his last three starts, and he posted a 2.25 ERA and 0.75 WHIP in 16 innings during that time. However, he was unable to replicate his success Sunday, and he was charged with his first loss since April 21. The 27-year-old has exhibited plenty of command recently and has now put together five straight starts without issuing a walk. Wells tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Rays on Friday.
May 9, 2022
Picks up first win
Wells (1-2) earned the win after allowing one run on five hits while striking out three over six innings Monday against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Wells limited traffic on the bases and pounded the strike zone in this one, firing 54 of 75 pitches for strikes. The right-hander has been sharp since allowing four runs in his first start of the season, limiting opponents to two runs or fewer in his last five outings. Wells now owns a 3.75 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 17:4 K:BB across 24 frames in 2022.
May 2, 2022
Tosses five innings
Wells yielded one run on four hits over five innings in Monday's loss to Minnesota. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Wells began the game with three perfect innings before coughing up a pair of singles in the fourth. The Twins finally broke the scoreless tie in the fifth with Ryan Jeffers' RBI single. The 6-foot-8 righty has now thrown five innings in consecutive starts after totaling just eight frames in his first three outings. Wells will carry a 4.50 ERA into his projected home start against the Royals this weekend.
Apr 28, 2022
Won't stretch out further
Wells isn't expected to keep stretching out further than the five innings and 72 pitches he threw Wednesday against the Yankees, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells is part of the rotation this season after spending last year in a relief role, but the Orioles seemingly don't feel comfortable fully unleashing him as a starter. While he was able to reach five innings Wednesday, the given pitch count means he'll only be able to do that on days where he's particularly efficient. That will significantly hurt his chances of picking up wins, which further diminishes the fantasy appeal for a pitcher who's already fairly unexciting, as he owns a 5.54 ERA and a 17.5 percent strikeout rate through four starts.
Apr 27, 2022
Effective in no-decision
Wells allowed two runs on three hits in five innings while striking out four in a 5-2 loss Wednesday against the Yankees. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Wells allowed a two-out, two-run homer to Giancarlo Stanton in the first inning and then retired 14 of the next 15 batters he faced. It was the longest major-league appearance of the 27-year-old's career. While his 5.54 ERA for the season is unsightly, he has been better since a poor first start. Over his last three appearances, Wells has a much more palatable 3.18 ERA to go along with a 1.15 WHIP. His next start will likely be early next week against Minnesota.
Apr 21, 2022
Early exit in loss
Wells (0-2) took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits over 2.1 innings in Thursday's 6-4 loss to the A's.
ANALYSIS
Wells appeared to right the ship after a dreadful beginning of the season, but he was pulled early for the second time in 11 days in the Orioles' ninth loss. He's also suffering from control issues at the plate, surrendering six walks over eight innings this season.
Apr 17, 2022
Tosses four scoreless innings
Wells completed four scoreless innings against the Yankees on Saturday, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out three. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander struggled a bit with his control in the contest, walking a pair of batters and hitting Anthony Rizzo with a pitch. However, Wells kept New York off the scoreboard for four frames before Baltimore turned to Mike Baumann in the fifth. It was an overall positive performance for Wells after he lasted just 1.2 frames and gave up four runs in his season debut. He's scheduled to next take the mound for a start in Oakland on Thursday.
Apr 10, 2022
Chased quickly Sunday
Wells (0-1) allowed four runs on three hits and two walks across 1.2 innings Sunday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
All four runs against Wells came in the second inning, including a two-run shot by Brandon Lowe that ended his afternoon. It was his first career MLB start after appearing in 44 games out of Baltimore's bullpen as a rookie last season. As of now, he's projected to take the mound at home next week against the Yankees.
Mar 31, 2022
Wins rotation spot
Wells will open the year in the Orioles' rotation, though he'll piggyback with a multi-inning reliever, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells was a starter throughout his minor-league career, though he hasn't started a game since 2018. He missed all of 2019 due to Tommy John surgery and didn't pitch in 2020 due to the canceled minor-league season, but he returned as a reliever last season and pitched fairly well. He recorded a 4.11 ERA in 57 innings, with his strong 29.0 percent strikeout rate and 5.4 percent walk rate being offset by a very low 21.4 percent groundball rate. The 27-year-old could be an interesting deep-league option if he can keep him strikeout and walk numbers from falling back too far over longer outings, though he may not throw enough innings to get the win in most of his starts, with the Orioles wanting to protect his workload in his return to the rotation.
Mar 16, 2022
May not close
Wells may be moved into a multi-inning role this season, according to Tony Pente, an Orioles analyst.
ANALYSIS
Pente is not affiliated with a trusted news outlet, but he seems like he is plugged in with what is happening with the Orioles. Per his report, Wells will be stretched out to see if he can handle a piggyback role as either a starter or primary starter. Cole Sulser would seem to be the obvious candidate to get saves in this instance.
Sep 25, 2021
Done for season
Wells was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with right shoulder inflammation.
ANALYSIS
He had seemingly taken over as Baltimore's closer in recent weeks, going 4-for-6 in save chances this month with a 7.27 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. With Wells on the shelf, Cole Sulser should be the primary option in the ninth inning.
Sep 24, 2021
Managing right shoulder discomfort
Wells was removed from Friday's game against the Rangers due to right shoulder discomfort, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells tossed just two pitches in Friday's contest before he left the game with a trainer. The right-hander will be re-evaluated Saturday to determine the severity of the issue. Prior to his departure, he gave up a triple that resulted in an earned run.
Sep 24, 2021
Exits with trainer
Wells left Friday's game against the Rangers in the top of the ninth inning with an apparent injury, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells entered Friday's game in a save situation but appeared to wince after he gave up a leadoff triple in the ninth. He was immediately removed from the game, but the nature of his injury isn't yet clear. If the right-hander is forced to miss time, Cole Sulser would likely be in line for increased ninth-inning work.
Sep 24, 2021
Garners fourth save
Wells got the save in Thursday's 3-0 win over the Rangers, allowing one hit in the ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Manager Brandon Hyde turned to Wells to secure the shutout and the 27-year-old delivered with an efficient inning to earn his fourth save. He tossed nine of 12 pitches for strikes and has now thrown three scoreless innings after blowing consecutive save chances earlier this month.
Sep 20, 2021
Secures third save
Wells worked a perfect ninth inning and earned a save over the Phillies on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Wells needed just seven pitches to roll through the heart of Philadelphia's order and finish off the 2-0 win. He's now 3-for-6 in save chances this season after blowing his previous two opportunities. The 6-foot-8 righty owns a 4.09 ERA through 55 innings.
Sep 15, 2021
Suffers blown save
Wells (2-3) took the loss after he surrendered two runs on two hits and a walk while recording just one out in a blown save Wednesday versus the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
The closer was called upon to protect a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth but he gave up a two-run single to Brett Gardner. It was the second consecutive outing in which he has blown a save, giving up six runs in 1.2 innings. Cole Sulser could end up getting the next save opportunity for the Orioles.
Sep 12, 2021
Unravels in Game 1 loss
Wells (2-2) took the loss in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader versus Toronto. He allowed four runs on three hits and a walk with one strikeout in 1.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was able to get the last out in the sixth inning without trouble, but Toronto teed off on him in the seventh, capped by George Springer's go-ahead two-run home run. Wells took his second blown save and second loss of the year after the disastrous outing. He has a 3.86 ERA, 0.88 WHIP And 64:11 K:BB across 53.2 innings this year, and Saturday's poor outing ended his 10.2-inning scoreless streak. The 27-year-old will still likely see high-leverage opportunities during the last three weeks of the season.
Sep 9, 2021
Snags second save
Wells recorded the final out of Wednesday's 9-8 win over the Royals to record his second save of the season.
ANALYSIS
It didn't look like the O's would have a closing situation at all for most of the game, as they were down 5-0 heading into the eighth inning before erupting for an incredible nine runs in the bottom of the frame, but Dillon Tate let the Royals back into it in the top of the ninth, forcing Wells into action. The 27-year-old appears to be the closer du jour for manager Brandon Hyde, but unlike some prior applicants for the role Wells actually has the stuff and numbers to credibly fit the assignment, averaging 95.1 mph with his fastball and allowing a .199 xwOBA on his slider this year while posting a 3.27 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 63:10 K:BB through his first 52.1 big-league innings.
Sep 5, 2021
Earns first save
Wells pitched a perfect inning to earn the save in Sunday's 8-7 win over the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old has been excellent since returning from right wrist tendinitis in mid-August, as he's posted a 7.1-inning scoreless streak while allowing just one hit and one walk. Wells finally got a chance to close out a game, and he did so by throwing 10 of his 12 pitches for strikes. He's added a hold, a blown save and a 2-1 record while posting a 3.35 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 62:10 K:BB across 51 innings this year. Expect the right-hander to see more high-leverage spots down the stretch.
Aug 26, 2021
Logs scoreless inning
Wells struck out one in a perfect inning during Wednesday's 10-6 win over the Angels.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander pitched in the ninth inning after Baltimore stormed ahead in the eighth. Wells has made just four appearances since returning from a wrist injury Aug. 12, but he's given up just one walk while striking out four in 3.1 innings in that span. The 27-year-old has a 3.64 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 59:10 K:BB across 47 innings, and he should be in line for high-leverage spots down the stretch, although Baltimore's poor performance as a team likely won't lead to many save chances.
Aug 12, 2021
Reinstated from injured list
Wells (wrist) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Wells' activation was expected after he threw a successful live batting practice session Tuesday. The right-hander had been sidelined for just under a month due to right wrist tendinitis, but he'll be available out of the bullpen after he posted a 3.92 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 43.2 innings across 29 relief appearances to begin the year.
Aug 11, 2021
Expected to return Thursday
Wells (wrist) is expected to be reinstated from the 10-day injured list Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells suffered a small setback last weekend, but he faced hitters Tuesday and will rejoin Baltimore's bullpen ahead of Thursday's series finale against the Tigers. The right-hander had been on the injured list since July 20 due to right wrist tendinitis, but he's recorded a 3.92 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 43.2 innings across 29 relief appearances in his first major-league season.
Aug 10, 2021
Throws live BP
Wells (wrist) threw live batting practice Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells was hoping to be activated as early as last week, but soreness in his injured right wrist postponed his return. If he comes out of Tuesday's live session feeling good, it's possible he could be reinstated by the end of the week, though the club has not confirmed the right-hander's next steps.
Aug 7, 2021
Suffers small setback
Wells (wrist) is not expected to be activated from the injured list until next week, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells suffered a setback with soreness in his injured right wrist earlier in the week. The right-hander played catch Friday, but he'll need to clear a few more hurdles without trouble before he can be considered good to go.
Aug 3, 2021
Wednesday activation possible
Wells (wrist) could return from the injured list as soon as Wednesday, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
If not Wednesday, the righty figures to be activated for Friday's series opener against the Rays. Manager Brandon Hyde said Wells, once healthy, could get opportunities as Baltimore's closer. He has a 3.92 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and stellar 55:9 K:BB in 43.2 innings of relief work this season.
Jul 23, 2021
Placed on injured list
Wells was placed on the 10-day injured list with right wrist tendinitis Friday, retroactive to July 20, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wells hadn't pitched since he struck out two in a scoreless inning against the Rays on Monday, and he's apparently dealing with a wrist injury. It's not yet clear whether the right-hander will be able to return after spending the minimum of 10 days on the IL.
Jul 11, 2021
Gives up three runs in relief
Wells (2-1) was tagged with the loss in relief Sunday against the White Sox after allowing three runs (two earned) on one hit and a walk across two innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Wells entered the game with one out to go in the eighth and fired a scoreless ninth while fanning three of the first four batters he faced, but the wheels came off in the 10th inning. The right-hander walked Yoan Moncada and retired two batters in a row before allowing Adam Engel to blast a three-run shot that would eventually decide the game for Chicago. Wells has now given up five runs over his last two outings, and his ERA has increased up to 4.10 as a result. He had recorded five straight scoreless appearances prior to his last two contests.
Jul 7, 2021
Scoreless streak ends
Wells allowed two runs on two hits and struck out one in one inning in Tuesday's 7-5 win over Toronto.
ANALYSIS
Prior to Tuesday, Wells had allowed just two hits while striking out eight across six scoreless innings in his last five outings. The reliever's setback didn't cost Baltimore on Tuesday, but it did raise his ERA to 3.86. He also posted a 0.96 WHIP and 49:8 K:BB across 39.2 innings in a low-leverage role.
Jun 20, 2021
Blown save Saturday
Wells allowed two runs on three hits and struck out one in one-third of an inning, taking a blown save in Saturday's 10-7 loss to Toronto.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander's streak of 11 scoreless innings over his last six appearances came to a crushing end. In addition to the two runs on his line, Wells also allowed all three runners he inherited from Paul Fry to score as part of Toronto's six-run ninth inning. Wells now has a 4.13 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 40:8 K:BB across 32.2 innings. The blown save was his first of the season, as he hasn't seen much high-leverage work yet.
Jun 19, 2021
Earns second win
Wells (2-0) struck out two in 1.1 perfect innings to earn the win against the Blue Jays on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Wells entered Friday's game to record the final out in the top of the fifth inning with runners on the corners. He struck out Marcus Semien to finish the inning, and he retired each of the three batters he faced in the sixth to pick up his second win of the year. The right-hander has struck out 12 in 11 scoreless innings across his last six outings.
Jun 3, 2021
Collects first win
Wells (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two to earn the win Wednesday versus Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Matt Harvey started the game on short rest and pitched three innings before Wells entered the game. Wells got help from Baltimore's offense, as DJ Stewart hit a go-ahead two-run home run. The win was the right-hander's first decision at the major-league level. He's posted a 4.81 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 29:8 K:BB across 24.1 innings. Wells will likely continue to see low-leverage assignments, as Wednesday was just the fifth time in 14 outings he's kept runs off the board.
May 25, 2021
Sloppy work Monday
Wells allowed a run on three hits and a walk and recorded his only out via strikeout in Monday's 8-3 loss to Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Wells didn't make the mess -- Tanner Scott and Cesar Valdez each struggled prior to the right-hander's entry into the game. Nonetheless, Wells allowed an inherited runner to score and then had to work out of a bases-loaded jam after allowing another run that was charged to him. The 26-year-old remains a candidate for low-leverage work with a 5.48 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 27:8 K:BB across 21.1 innings this year. Prior to Monday, he had logged 10 straight outings of more than one inning.
May 12, 2021
Logs two scoreless innings
Wells pitched two scoreless innings with one walk and no strikeouts in Wednesday's 7-1 loss to the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Wells entered in the seventh inning of a lopsided game, but he kept it from getting any worse. The 26-year-old has a 5.40 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB across 15 innings in nine appearances. This was just the third time this season Wells has kept runs off the board -- he's likely to continue in a low-leverage role.
Apr 25, 2021
Hit hard in relief outing
Wells allowed three runs on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts in two innings of Saturday's 7-2 loss to the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Saturday was a bullpen day for the Orioles, and Wells took over in the second inning after Wade LeBlanc was ineffective through 1.2 innings. In the fourth, Wells was taken deep by A's infielder Jed Lowrie for a three-run home run. The 26-year-old Wells has a 7.04 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 9:3 K:BB across 7.2 innings this season. He's likely to be limited to low-leverage assignments.

Allows run in relief outing
Wells gave up one run on a hit and a walk and struck out one in the seventh inning of Tuesday's 7-2 loss to the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Wells walked Brett Gardner and then allowed an RBI double to Giancarlo Stanton for the Yankees' fourth run of the game. The 26-year-old Wells had a clean outing against the Red Sox on Sunday. As a Rule 5 pick, the right-hander has to stay on the Orioles' roster all season for them to maintain his playing rights. He's expected to work in middle relief in 2021, although he could play his way into high-leverage assignments.

Wins roster spot
Wells will break camp in the Orioles' bullpen, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
As a Rule 5 pick, Wells has to be kept on the roster all season or offered back to the Twins. He appears to have won his roster spot by merit, however, as he struck out 12 batters and walking just three in nine innings this spring, allowing one run on six hits.
