Cooper Rush Injury News & Updates
Keep up with the latest injuries from the Ravens vs Bengals game on Sunday with our National Football League injury report.Dec 7, 2025
Maintaining role as emergency QB
Rush (coach's decision) is inactive while serving as Baltimore's emergency third quarterback for Sunday's Week 14 battle against Pittsburgh, Ryan Mink of the Ravens' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush typically serves in this role on game days, as he remains behind Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley in the Ravens' QB pecking order. Rush is eligible to enter Sunday's game only if both Jackson and Huntley need to exit due to injury, illness or ejection.

Emergency QB for Thanksgiving Day
Rush (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday's game against the Bengals but will serve as the Ravens' emergency third quarterback.
ANALYSIS
Rush will once again serve as the Ravens' emergency QB3 behind Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley. That means Rush is restricted from playing Thursday unless both Jackson and Huntley were to be removed from the game due to injury, illness or ejection.
Nov 23, 2025
Emergency QB again
Rush (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Jets.
ANALYSIS
This will be the fourth week in a row that Rush has served in the emergency role, which means he can't enter the game unless Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley exit due to injury, illness or ejection. Rush started two games earlier in the season with Jackson out due to injury, but he only led the offense to 13 points across both contests, leading to Huntley making the start in the last game that Jackson missed.
Nov 16, 2025
Emergency QB for Week 11
Rush (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Browns but will serve as the Ravens' emergency third quarterback.
ANALYSIS
As the emergency third quarterback, Rush will only see the field Sunday if both Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley were to exit the game due to injury, illness or ejection.
Nov 9, 2025
Emergency QB Week 10
Rush (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Vikings but will serve as the Ravens' emergency third quarterback.
ANALYSIS
Lamar Jackson is healthy for a second consecutive week after missing three straight games. That leaves Rush as the emergency QB, meaning he can only enter Sunday's contest if Jackson and Tyler Huntley are removed due to injury, illness or ejection.
Oct 30, 2025
Emergency QB for TNF
Rush (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday's game against the Dolphins but will serve as the Ravens' emergency third quarterback.
ANALYSIS
Rush was the Ravens' starting QB for Weeks 5 and 6 but was demoted to backup duties behind Tyler Huntley for Week 8 against the Bears. With Lamar Jackson cleared to return from a three-game absence Thursday, Huntley will operate as the backup while Rush serves as the emergency third quarterback. As such, Rush will be permitted to see the field Thursday only if Jackson and Huntley were both removed due to injury, illness or ejection.
Oct 24, 2025
Out of Week 8 QB picture
Coach John Harbaugh said Friday that Tyler Huntley, rather than Rush, would start Sunday's game against the Bears if Lamar Jackson (hamstring) doesn't play.
ANALYSIS
Jackson's listed as questionable but is trending toward returning after practicing without limitations Friday. Rush started in Weeks 5 and 6 while Jackson was sidelined, but the Ravens scored only 13 points in those two games combined. Huntley's more mobile than Rush and could run an offense more comparable stylistically to the one Baltimore runs with Jackson.
Oct 13, 2025
Benched in loss to Rams
Rush completed 11 of 19 passes for 72 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 17-3 loss to the Rams. He also had one rush for zero yards while losing a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Rush drew his second straight start in the absence of Lamar Jackson (hamstring). He ran a decent first possession that resulted in a field goal, completing both of his passes for 12 yards while also scrambling for seven. However, he was intercepted in Baltimore's following drive and the team had several additional miscues before Rush was finally pulled after losing a fumble deep in Rams' territory late in the third quarter. Jackson is expected back in Week 8 following Baltimore's bye, but Rush could be in danger of being demoted to the third-string quarterback.
Oct 10, 2025
Another spot start on tap
Rush will start Sunday against the Rams after the Ravens ruled out Lamar Jackson (hamstring) for that contest, Brian Wacker of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Earlier Friday, coach John Harbaugh declined to give a game designation for Jackson ahead of Week 6 action but added that if he doesn't play, Rush would get the nod under center, per Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com. Now that the preceding has come to pass, Rush will start his second straight game this weekend, though he'll be looking to be more productive after completing 14-for-20 passes for 179 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions during this past Sunday's 44-10 loss to the Texans.
Oct 5, 2025
Picked off three times
Rush completed 14 of 20 passes for 179 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in Sunday's 44-10 loss to the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Rush led the Ravens on a decent first drive that resulted in a field goal, completing all five of his pass attempts for 59 yards. Things imploded from there, however, as the Ravens turned in consecutive three-and-outs to end the first half before Rush threw three picks in the final two quarters. The one positive is that Rush was able to complete a long pass to Zay Flowers, salvaging the star receiver's fantasy day. Rush could be lined up for a Week 6 start against the Rams, pending Lamar Jackson's (hamstring) recovery.
Oct 3, 2025
Drawing start in Week 5
Rush is slated to start at quarterback in Sunday's game against the Texans, Brian Wacker of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
With Lamar Jackson (hamstring) set to miss his first game for injury-related reasons since 2022, Rush will step in to make his first start as a member of the Ravens. Over his previous eight seasons in the league, Rush made 38 appearances and 14 starts for the Cowboys, completing 60.7 percent of his passes for 6.4 yards per attempt and a 20:10 TD:INT. Though Rush has been capable as a game manager when called upon to start, he brings little running upside to the table, thereby limiting much of his appeal as a fantasy option. In order to ease the burden on Rush in his first start of 2025, the Ravens could favor a run-heavy game plan led by Derrick Henry so long as the contest remains competitive.

Looks poised for Week 5 start
Rush appears likely to start Sunday's game against the Texans with Lamar Jackson (hamstring) expected to be sidelined for the Week 5 contest, two sources tell Brian Wacker of The Baltimore Sun.
ANALYSIS
The Ravens haven't provided official word on Jackson's status for Week 5 after he exited midway through the third quarter of Sunday's 37-20 loss to the Chiefs with the hamstring issue, but a source familiar with the quarterback's injury said that he could be out for 2-to-3 weeks. Jackson plans to still try and see if he can play this coming Sunday, but in the likely event that the hamstring injury is inhibiting him during practice, Rush would step in to make his 15th career NFL start and his first as a member of the Ravens. While coming on in relief of Jackson for the final quarter and a half in Kansas City, Rush completed nine of 13 pass attempts for 52 yards. Rush has proven to be a competent game manager during his previous runs as a starter in Dallas, but since he lacks rushing ability and is averaging a middling 6.3 yards per pass attempt for his career, he doesn't profile as an especially enticing fantasy option.

On track to start preseason finale
Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Tuesday that Rush will likely start Saturday's preseason game against the Commanders, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Harbaugh said he plans to sit his starters again versus Washington, just as Baltimore did during last Saturday's 31-13 preseason win over the Cowboys, in which Rush completed 20 of 30 passes for 198 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Across his two exhibition appearances thus far Rush has thrown three interceptions. While he still appears the favorite for the No. 2 quarterback role behind Lamar Jackson over second-year pro Devin Leary, it will serve Rush well to avoid any further turnovers versus the Commanders.
Aug 17, 2025
Turnover problems continue
Rush completed 20 of 30 passes for 198 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Saturday's 31-13 preseason win over the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Rush had emerged as a servicable backup during his time with the Cowboys, but this preseason has not gone his way through two contests. He threw an interception on his first pass attempt in his first exhibition game and then threw a pick-six late in the first quarter against his former team Saturday. Rush also managed to lead three scoring drives, including a one-yard touchdown throw, and he should still be in line to serve as Lamar Jackson's backup come Week 1 of the regular season.
Aug 7, 2025
Throws pick on first pass
Rush completed two of four passes for 16 yards, with an interception, in Thursday's preseason game against Indianapolis.
ANALYSIS
Rush got the start, leading the second-string offense, and threw an ugly interception on the second snap of the game. The Ravens then scored a touchdown on his second and final drive, although Rush didn't do much besides hand the ball to RB Keaton Mitchell. Rush's contract and track record put him safely in the No. 2 QB role for Baltimore, preseason miscues aside.
Mar 16, 2025
Set to back up Lamar Jackson
Rush and the Ravens have agreed to a two-year contract valued at up to $12.2 million, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush spent the first eight seasons of his career in Dallas and made 14 starts during that span, winning nine of those games. The 31-year-old saw the most action of his career last year after Dak Prescott (hamstring) was hurt in Week 10, and Rush finished with an 83.8 passer rating, completing 61 percent of his 308 pass attempts with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions over 12 games. With Baltimore, he'll be the No. 2 QB behind Lamar Jackson, who has missed just one regular-season contest over the past two years.
Feb 24, 2025
Too pricey for Dallas?
Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said the team thinks highly of Rush but won't necessarily re-sign him, David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
"You know how much we think of [Rush]," Jones said. "We just don't know what he's going to cost. When we're paying [Prescott what we're paying him, unfortunately we do have to go cheap there." Jones also hinted at the likelihood of third-stringer Trey Lance moving on to a new team, potentially leaving the Cowboys to sort through rookies or bottom-of-the-barrel veterans for the backup QB work in 2025. Rush has won nine of 14 starts in his career, likely putting him near the top of the backup market even though he's 31 years old.
Jan 5, 2025
Serving as backup in Week 18
Rush will serve as the backup quarterback in Sunday's game against the Commanders.
ANALYSIS
Rush has served as the starting quarterback for the Cowboys since Week 11 with Dak Prescott (hamstring) sidelined. While inconsistent, he did manage a 12:4 TD:INT across nine games while averaging only 6.1 yards per attempt. The decision to start Lance on Sunday likely has more to do with giving him an extended chance to play rather than a true benching of Rush, but Rush will find himself on the bench to close the campaign regardless.
Jan 3, 2025
May yield reps to Lance in Week 18
Rush may start Sunday's game versus the Commanders, but backup QB Trey Lance is expected to earn "significant" snaps as well, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush has taken on the vast majority of QB reps since Dak Prescott (hamstring) was lost for the season in the second half of a Week 9 loss in Atlanta. In parts of nine games in the interim, Rush has completed 60.5 percent of his passes, averaged 199.1 yards per game and put together a 12:4 TD:INT. He's also notched 17 yards on 24 carries and fumbled nine times (three lost). With the Cowboys out of the playoff picture, it appears the team wants to see what Lance can do with more than the three brief appearances he's made so far this season, but it's also unclear how much he'll eat into Rush's typical workload.
Dec 29, 2024
Rough showing in blowout loss
Rush completed 15 of 28 passes for 147 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions and rushed once for two yards in the Cowboys' 41-7 loss to the Eagles on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Rush struggled to get much going against a talented Eagles defense while operating without top target CeeDee Lamb (IR-shoulder), throwing multiple interceptions for the first time this season. Rush also did extend his streak of games with at least one touchdown pass to seven when he connected with Jalen Tolbert from seven yards out in the first quarter to atone for the pick-six he'd thrown on the opening possession of the contest. Sunday's poor showing aside, Rush has been solid overall since Dak Prescott (hamstring) was lost for the season, and he'll have a chance to close out the 2024 campaign on a better note when he faces a vulnerable Commanders secondary in Week 18.
Dec 23, 2024
Leads Cowboys to upset win
Rush completed 26 of 35 passes for 292 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 26-24 win over Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
Rush delivered arguably his best showing of the season to lead Dallas to an upset win in primetime. He completed five passes of more than 20 yards, including 52 and 34-yard deep completions to CeeDee Lamb, to average 8.3 yards per attempt. Rush also avoided mistakes, as he didn't turn the ball over and was sacked just once. The only disappointing aspect of the showing was that he found the end zone only one time on a 10-yard connection with Jalen Tolbert late in the first quarter.
Dec 15, 2024
Three TDs in win
Rush completed 18 of 29 passes for 214 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 30-14 win over the Panthers. He added four rushes for five yards.
ANALYSIS
Rush took some time to get the Cowboys' offense moving, but that changed on a drive early in the second quarter during which he went 5-for-5 with 70 yards and a 14-yard touchdown pass to CeeDee Lamb. He went on to tally two additional passing scores to Jalen Tolbert and Jalen Brooks to record the first three-touchdown game of his career and complete the blowout victory over Carolina. While it was a favorable matchup, Rush also averaged 7.4 yards per attempt -- his second-highest mark of the season -- to give him some momentum heading into another exploitable matchup in Week 16 against Tampa Bay.
Dec 10, 2024
Tosses two TDs in loss
Rush completed 16 of 31 passes for 183 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and rushed twice for five yards in the Cowboys' 27-20 loss to the Bengals on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
Rush had a harder time than might have been envisioned against a Bengals defense that did a solid job in coverage for the most part and also compiled three sacks in addition to a second-quarter interception at Cincinnati's four-yard line. The veteran backup did start of in positive fashion with an 11-yard touchdown toss to CeeDee Lamb on fourth down in the first quarter, and he added a three-yard scoring pass to Brandin Cooks early in the third quarter. Rush also took a sack and threw high to Jake Ferguson on the Cowboys' final chance in the fourth quarter to turn the ball over on downs. Rush will aim to get back on track in a favorable Week 15 road matchup against the Panthers.
Nov 28, 2024
Limits mistakes on Thanksgiving
Rush completed 21 of 36 passes for 195 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions in Thursday's 27-20 win over the Giants. He added five rushes for zero yards.
ANALYSIS
Rush wasn't asked to do much, as the Cowboys cashed in a pick-six and also scored on a short field to begin the third quarter. As a result, Rush didn't have to be aggressive in pushing the ball down the field, but he didn't turn the ball over and didn't take a sack to keep the Cowboys' offense on schedule. His 5.4 yards per attempt weren't inspiring, but he did throw for at least one touchdown for the third time in his four starts this season. Rush will likely have to be more aggressive in a Week 14 matchup against Cincinnati, which could lead to a better stat line.
Nov 27, 2024
Set to play Thursday
Rush (knee) doesn't have a designation for Thursday's game versus the Giants, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush was estimated as limited Monday and Tuesday due to a knee injury, but his ability to handle a full session Wednesday has paved the way for him to continue to lead the Cowboys offense Week 13. While he won't have TE Jake Ferguson (concussion) for a second consecutive contest Thursday, Rush will have top WRs CeeDee Lamb (back/foot) and Brandin Cooks (knee) -- the later of whom was activated from injured reserve Wednesday -- available to him.
Nov 26, 2024
Remains limited Tuesday
Rush (knee) remained limited in Tuesday's practice, Jane Slater of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush is dealing with some knee soreness, but expectations are he will be able to play Thursday against the Giants. Rush is coming off a solid Week 12 performance against the Commanders, when he completed 24 of 32 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns. He gets another softer matchup against a Giants defense that is 19th in fantasy points allowed to quarterbacks and has only intercepted one pass all season.
Nov 25, 2024
Estimated as limited Monday
Rush (knee) was listed as limited on Monday's practice estimate, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Monday's session was merely a walk-through, but Rush's listed limitations make his status worth tracking ahead of Thursday's 4:30 p.m. ET game against the Giants. For his part, head coach Mike McCarthy downplayed the QB's knee issue following Week 12 action. "He's got some work to do, but I think we're gonna be fine," McCarthy noted of Rush on Monday. However, in the event that Rush encounters any setbacks, Trey Lance would be next in line to log the Cowboys' Thanksgiving Day start.
Nov 24, 2024
Produces solid numbers in win
Rush completed 24 of 32 passes for 247 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and netted one yard on four rushes in the Cowboys' 34-26 win over the Commanders on Sunday. He also fumbled once but recovered.
ANALYSIS
Rush was able to put together a successful, turnover-free encore to his season-high 354-yard tally on Monday night against the Texans, posting his first multi-TD tally in the process. The veteran backup connected for both of his scoring tosses in the second half, hitting Jalen Tolbert (six yards) and Luke Schoonmaker (22 yards) with end-zone strikes in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. Rush may be settling into a rhythm now that he's gotten a few games under his belt, and he'll head into a Week 13 Thanksgiving Day matchup against the Giants with momentum on his side.
Nov 19, 2024
Remains starter
Head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that Rush will remain the Cowboys' starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Commanders, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush will make his third consecutive start in Week 12, even though the Cowboys have been outscored 68-16 in losses to the Eagles and Texans over the past two games. With Dallas trailing by at least two scores for much of Monday's game against Houston, Rush dropped back 60 times on the night, taking five sacks while completing 32 of 55 pass attempts for a touchdown and a career-high 354 yards. Though Rush's 6.4 yards per attempt were a stark improvement from his 2.0 average against the Eagles, he still threw a costly first-quarter interception in Houston territory and also fumbled twice. Rush may be on a shorter leash in Week 12, with McCarthy acknowledging that he'll also have a package of plays available for backup quarterback Trey Lance, who offers more of a threat as a runner.
Nov 19, 2024
Throws for 354 yards in loss
Rush completed 32 of 55 pass attempts for 354 yards, one touchdown and one interception while taking two carries for as many yards in Monday's 34-10 loss to the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Rush wound up piling up enough numbers to serve as a formidable bye week replacement off waivers, despite the one-sided nature of Monday's primetime matchup. The veteran backup did throw an interception while seeing multiple balls bounce off of Houston defenders' hands, which could have derailed his night from a fantasy standpoint. Rush's two fumbles were secured by either himself or a teammate, resulting in a shaky but passable showing. Assuming Dallas keeps Rush under center for Sunday's tilt against Washington, he should check in at the bottom-third of fantasy QB rankings for Week 12.
Nov 11, 2024
Will start versus Houston
Head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed Monday that Rush will start next Monday's game against the Texans, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
In his first start of the 2024 regular season, subbing in for the injured Dak Prescott (hamstring), Rush completed 13 of his 23 passing attempts for 45 yards, while rushing twice for two yards with two lost fumbles in the Cowboys' 34-6 loss to the Eagles on Sunday. Despite the rough outing, which saw fellow QB Trey Lance replace him in the blowout, the Cowboys will give Rush at least another start, though it it is worth noting that the team is expected to add another signal caller in the coming days. In any case, while Rush isn't a high-percentage fantasy option in Week 11, he could serve as a plug in for those dealing with bye week issues or injuries at the quarterback position.
Nov 10, 2024
Struggles in first 2024 start
Rush completed 13 of 23 pass attempts for 45 yards while rushing twice for two yards and two lost fumbles in Sunday's 34-6 loss to the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Rush failed to move the ball on offense much at all against Philadelphia before mercifully being replaced late in the blowout loss. The veteran backup has had success in place of an injured Dak Prescott (hamstring) in the past, but Sunday's dud did not fall into that category of performances. Trey Lance didn't fare much better in his brief appearance, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the backups switch roles against the Texans in Week 11 for Monday Night Football.
Nov 4, 2024
Will start against Philadelphia
With Dak Prescott (hamstring) sidelined, coach Mike McCarthy announced Monday that Rush will start Week 10 against the Eagles next Sunday, David Moore of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
"We have great confidence in Cooper," McCarthy said. Rush has been Prescott's backup all season, but it was unclear if Dallas would start Rush or turn to Trey Lance. In relief of Prescott on Sunday against the Falcons, Rush completed 13 of 25 passes (52 percent) for 115 yards and one touchdown, averaging a minuscule 4.6 yards per attempt. Rush won't be a recommended fantasy starter outside of deeper two-quarterback formats.
Nov 3, 2024
Tosses TD in relief Sunday
Rush completed 13 of 25 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown after replacing Dak Prescott (hamstring) in Sunday's 27-21 loss to the Falcons. He also threw a two-point conversion and gained four yards on his only carry.
ANALYSIS
Prescott left at the end of the third quarter, leaving Rush to try and mount a comeback from a 27-13 deficit. The Cowboys' No. 2 QB managed to produce points inside the final two minutes of the fourth quarter on his third and final drive, hitting Jalen Tolbert for a four-yard TD and then CeeDee Lamb for a two-point conversion, but Dallas couldn't recover the subsequent onside kick. Prescott is headed for an MRI on Monday, per Todd Archer of ESPN.com, and if he's ruled out for a Week 10 tilt against the Eagles, Rush would likely get the start, with Trey Lance backing him up.
Oct 14, 2024
Sees work in relief
Rush completed eight of 11 passes for 46 yards with an interception in Sunday's loss to the Lions.
ANALYSIS
Dak Prescott got most of the fourth quarter off in a blowout loss, allowing Rush to see his most extensive action of the season so far. The 30-year-old continues to be active ahead of Trey Lance as the Cowboys' No. 2 QB, and Rush would presumably be the pick to move into the starting lineup should anything happen to Prescott.
Aug 30, 2024
Set as No. 2 QB
Rush will open the season as the primary backup to Dak Prescott for the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Trey Lance also made the 53-man roster, but his five-interception performance in the team's final preseason game ended any thought that he could bump Rush aside for the No. 2 job. Rush has been a reliable backup the last three seasons, seeing action in 21 games and completing 60.9 percent of his passes with a 6.9 YPA and an 8:5 TD:INT. Given that Prescott doesn't yet have a contract extension however, should he suffer a serious injury and the season go off the rails, it might be Lance and not Rush who fills in as the Cowboys evaluate their options for 2025 and beyond.
Jan 22, 2024
Sees little action as backup
Rush completed 18 of 24 passes for 144 yards and an interception over seven regular-season games in 2023.
ANALYSIS
While the Cowboys' penchant for early-season blowouts gave Rush plenty of garbage-time opportunities, the 30-year-old quarterback didn't get a start as Dak Prescott stayed healthy all year. Rush is under contract for one more season at a modest $2.25 million, and while his familiarity with the offense should ensure he returns to Dallas in 2024, he could face a challenge for the No. 2 role from Trey Lance.
Jan 14, 2024
Good to go Sunday
Rush (illness) is listed as active ahead of Sunday's playoff matchup against the Packers, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush was deemed questionable due to an ailment Friday after avoiding the Cowboys' injury reports Wednesday and Thursday. While the nature of this issue was never disclosed, the 30-year-old will once again be available as the team's backup quarterback behind Dak Prescott for Sunday's wild-card game. Rush has seen action in mop-up duty during seven games this season, completing 18 of 24 passes for 144 yards and one interception.
Jan 12, 2024
Dealing with illness
Rush (illness) is questionable for Sunday's game versus the Packers, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The specifics of Rush's ailment aren't known at this point, but his availability for the wild-card round is now in doubt. If he can't suit up Sunday, 2021 first-rounder Trey Lance would probably step in as the primary backup to Dak Prescott.
Oct 2, 2023
Sees action in blowout win
Rush completed both his pass attempts for 20 yards in Sunday's 38-3 rout of the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
He also lost two yards on three official carries, as he kneed down on the Cowboys' final series. It's already the second time this season Rush has gotten some garbage-time snaps, as he also handled the final possession of a 40-0 blowout of the Giants in Week 1. Barring an injury to Dak Prescott however, the 29-year-old backup QB won't see enough action to have fantasy value.
Sep 17, 2023
Active as No. 2 quarterback
Rush is active Sunday against the Jets, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush will operate as the Cowboys' backup quarterback Sunday, as he remains ahead of Trey Lance on the team's depth chart. The veteran signal caller saw action at the end of the Cowboys' blowout victory over the Giants in Week 1, playing just seven snaps and attempting one pass. Rush would be the next man up if necessary behind Dak Prescott in Week 2.
Aug 13, 2023
Efficient in preseason opener
Rush completed 10 of 12 passes for 83 yards in Saturday's preseason loss to the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old got the start at quarterback with Dak Prescott being held out of the Cowboys' preseason opener and was efficient on three drives, although none of them resulted in points for Dallas. Rush remains the favorite to serve as the No. 2 QB behind Prescott this season, but a big showing from Will Grier on Saturday has kept the competition alive for now.
Mar 17, 2023
Remains in Dallas
The Cowboys are re-signing Rush to a two-year contract Friday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush proved his worth as a backup last season by leading Dallas' offense to win four of his five early-season starts with Dak Prescott injured, Prescott is the Cowboys' clear starter, but after having proven his proficiency in the team's system, Rush could be worth rostering in deeper fantasy formats that start multiple quarterbacks.
Jan 27, 2023
Proves worth as backup
Rush completed 58.0 percent of his passes for 1,051 yards and five touchdowns with three interceptions over nine games in 2022.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old quarterback saw his most action yet in an NFL season, and Rush kept the Cowboys' year afloat by winning four of his five starts while Dak Prescott was sidelined with a thumb injury in September and October. Rush will be a free agent this offseason, while Will Grier is still under contract for another season, so it's possible Dallas doesn't bring him back in 2023. Given his success this past season, Rush could have multiple offers to sort through from teams looking for QB depth.
Oct 17, 2022
Struggles in SNF loss
Rush completed just 18 of 38 pass attempts for 181 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in Sunday's 26-17 loss to the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Rush was harassed from start to finish, resulting in his worst outing since being forced to take over as the Cowboys' starting quarterback in Week 2. The 28-year-old had flourished as a game manager with four touchdowns and no turnovers over his last four starts before getting exposed by Philadelphia's secondary Sunday. Rush's run as starter may come to a close ahead of next Sunday's tilt against the Lions, as Dak Prescott (thumb) was able to get in a throwing session before Sunday's primetime loss. The quarterback situation in Dallas should become clearer as we progress through the upcoming practice week.
Oct 16, 2022
Starting again in Week 6
Rush will serve as the Cowboys' starting quarterback Sunday at Philadelphia with Dak Prescott (thumb) inactive.
ANALYSIS
Such was the expectation, but Prescott may have put himself in a position to return Week 7 versus the Lions after going through a throwing session ahead of Sunday's game. In the meantime, though, Rush will receive a fifth consecutive start, the first four of which resulted in Cowboys wins. During those performances, he completed 62 percent of his passes (65 of 105) for 705 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
Oct 12, 2022
Likely for another start
The Cowboys are preparing for Rush and not Dak Prescott (thumb) to start Sunday's game versus the Eagles, Clarence E. Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
ANALYSIS
While the Cowboys aren't completing dismissing the idea of Prescott putting an end to his four-game absence this weekend, McCarthy noted that the franchise signal-caller will only do "light throwing" on the sideline Wednesday during Dallas' first official Week 6 practice, per Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports. Unless Prescott's surgically repaired thumb shows dramatic healing in the next two days that allows him to grip the football and throw at optimal velocity without inhibition, Rush looks as though he'll be making his fifth consecutive start. The Cowboys have thus far gone 4-0 under Rush's stewardship, though much of the credit during that unbeaten run goes to the team's stalwart defense. For his part, Rush hasn't turned the ball over and has thrown for four touchdowns, but he's averaging a so-so 7.4 yards per attempt while completing 61.9 percent of his passes.

Quiet in Sunday's win
Rush completed 10 of 16 passes for 102 yards without a touchdown of interception in Sunday's 22-10 win over the Rams.
ANALYSIS
He also lost one yard on four carries. The 28-year-old quarterback had a poor performance from a fantasy perspective, but Rush didn't need to be a hero with the defense and running game carrying the load. Dak Prescott (thumb) has yet to show the progress in his recovery he'd need to in order to get back on the field, which likely leaves Rush under center once again in Week 6 in what's become a huge NFC East showdown with the undefeated Eagles.

Another start awaits
Rush is set to make his fourth straight start Sunday against the Rams with Dak Prescott (thumb) having yet to make enough progress in his recovery to play this weekend, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Dallas formally signed Will Grier -- who had backed up Rush in each of the previous three contests -- from the practice squad Tuesday, which supports the notion that Prescott isn't on track to be available even as an emergency No. 2 option. A return Week 6 against the Eagles is still a realistic possibility for Prescott, but Rush will get at least one more chance to direct the Dallas offense. Rush has been a competent caretaker while leading the Cowboys to wins of the Bengals, Giants and Commanders. He has yet to commit a turnover this season and has completed 61.8 percent of his throws for 7.6 yards per attempt and four touchdowns.
Oct 2, 2022
Another solid showing
Rush completed 15 of 27 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns against Washington on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
While Rush's modest pass attempt volume is reflective of his game-manager limitations, he continues to play very clean football and makes the throws he needs to. CeeDee Lamb (six catches for 97 yards and one touchdown on eight targets) was highly effective, and Rush conducted two of Dallas' biggest plays in the game with a 45-yard pass to Noah Brown and a nine-yard touchdown to Michael Gallup. Although Dak Prescott (thumb) might return in Week 5, at the very least Rush has shown that the Dallas offense can remain functional if he needs to play in the future.

Shows composure in primetime win
Rush completed 21 of his 31 pass attempts for 215 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Monday's 23-16 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Rush completed all five of his pass attempts for 64 yards on a drive that ended in an Ezekiel Elliott touchdown to tie the game late in the third quarter. One possession later, Rush completed seven passes for 65 yards and connected with CeeDee Lamb for a one-yard score to give the Cowboys the lead. Rush has been relied upon primarily as a game manager in the absence of Dak Prescott (thumb), but he has led the Cowboys to two victories in each of his two starts.
Sep 18, 2022
Mistake-free effort in Week 2 win
Rush completed 19 of 31 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 20-17 win over the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
The backup quarterback remarkably won his second straight start for Dallas after he guided the team to a Week 8 victory last year against Minnesota. Much of Rush's production came in a dynamic first quarter that saw the Cowboys jump out to a 14-3 lead, including a nine-yard TD strike to Noah Brown, but after the Bengals rallied to tie it 17-17 late in the fourth, he led his squad on a final scoring drive with less than a minute left to set up a game-winning field goal by Brett Maher. With Dak Prescott (thumb) sidelined for at least a couple more games and probably longer, Rush will get a chance to prove he's more than a one-game wonder in Week 3 against a Giants defense that just held Baker Mayfield to less than 150 passing yards.
Sep 17, 2022
Officially on active roster
Rush, who is expected to start Sunday against the Bengals, signed a contract with the Cowboys on Saturday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush was technically on the practice squad and previously was a Week 1 call up, but the Cowboys quickly rectified the issue by officially signing the backup to the 53-man squad. Rush is expected to start Sunday against the Bengals with Will Grier perhaps projected to act as his backup.
Sep 12, 2022
Next man up with Prescott out
Rush is expected to step in as Dallas' starting quarterback beginning with Sunday's game against the Bengals, as Dak Prescott is likely to miss 6-8 weeks after undergoing surgery Monday to address a fractured right hand, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Prescott exited in the fourth quarter of the Cowboys' season-opening 19-3 loss to Tampa Bay after suffering the injury when he struck the outstretched hand of Buccaneers defender Shaquil Barrett while attempting a pass. Rush stepped in to finish the contest, completing seven of 13 passes for 64 yards while taking two sacks. Once Prescott is officially placed on injured reserve in the coming days, Rush -- who was elevated from the practice squad Sunday -- is expected to be formally added to the 53-man roster. Will Grier is another candidate to be promoted from the practice squad to provide depth at QB, but during Prescott's absence, expect Dallas to look outside the organization to add at least one more quarterback to the 53-man roster or the practice squad to restore numbers at the position. Over 11 contests (one start) during his six-year NFL career, Rush has been a capable game manager with a 60.3 percent completion rate for 7.7 yards per attempt, three touchdowns and one interception, but he doesn't presen

Called up for Week 1
Rush has been called up to the Cowboys' 53-man roster ahead of their Week 1 game against the Buccaneers, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Although he was named the team's No. 2 quarterback behind Dak Prescott, Dallas has kept Rush on their practice squad until now. The 28-year-old will now be available under center should anything ultimately happen to Prescott.
Sep 2, 2022
Named No. 2 QB for Dallas
Rush will back up Dak Prescott to begin the season, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
While Rush is currently on the practice squad as part of some roster juggling shenanigans by the Cowboys, the 28-year-old will be promoted to the active roster ahead of Week 1's game against the Buccaneers. Rush started only one game last season but he made it count, leading Dallas to a Week 8 win in Minnesota.
Aug 31, 2022
Joins Cowboys' practice squad
Rush has signed with Dallas' practice squad, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush was competing with Will Grier for the backup quarterback position behind Dak Prescott during training camp. The team ultimately opted to cut both and keep Prescott as the lone quarterback on the 53-man roster. The team will likely call up one of the two to be the emergency backup come Week 1.
Aug 30, 2022
Released by Dallas
The Cowboys released Rush on Tuesday, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush and Will Grier were competing for the top backup spot behind Dak Prescott, but it appears like neither quarterback will have a spot on the team's initial 53-man roster. The Cowboys will likely bring back at least one of the two backup quarters via a practice squad deal so they can operate as an emergency option during game days.
Aug 21, 2022
Plays pair of possessions Saturday
Rush completed three of six pass attempts for 32 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in the Cowboys' 32-18 preseason win over the Chargers on Saturday night.
ANALYSIS
Rush started his second straight exhibition, but he saw less work than during the preseason-opening loss to the Broncos a week earlier when he went 12-for-20 for 84 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. The Central Michigan product played the first two offensive series before calling it a night, and he heads into the exhibition finale against the Seahawks on Friday seemingly locked into the No. 2 job.
Aug 20, 2022
Starting Saturday's exhibition
Coach Mike McCarthy said Rush will start Saturday's preseason game at the Chargers with Dak Prescott not suiting up, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Like he did preseason Week 1 at Denver, Rush will get the nod first under center for the Cowboys. In that contest, he complete 12 of 20 passes for 84 yards, no touchdowns and one interception while adding nine-yard carry. Once Rush is done for the contest, Will Grier will enter for him, with Ben Dinucci working the fourth quarter.
Jul 5, 2022
Still ticketed for backup role
Rush is expected to be the Cowboys' No. 2 quarterback this season behind Dak Prescott, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old could face a camp challenge for the job from Will Grier, who was a third-round pick of the Panthers in 2019, but Rush earned a lot of goodwill by leading the Cowboys to victory in his lone start last year, Week 8 against the Vikings. If Prescott stays healthy in 2022, however, his backup isn't likely to see much work, regardless of who it is.
Jan 11, 2022
Sees action late in Week 18
Rush completed his only pass attempt for 10 yards and lost four yards on three carries in Saturday's win over the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
It's the fifth time this season Rush has seen action, but he's only been needed for one start as his other four appearances, including this one, came late in blowout wins. The 28-year-old wraps up the regular season with a 63.8 percent completion rate, 422 passing yards and a 3:1 TD:INT on 47 attempts, and he's proven he can be a capable backup for Dak Prescott in the Cowboys' system.
Nov 4, 2021
Headed back to No. 2 role
Rush is expected to serve as the Cowboys' backup quarterback Sunday against the Broncos after head coach Mike McCarthy said Dak Prescott (calf) was on track to start Week 9 upon returning to full participation in practice Thursday, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Prescott was viewed as a game-time decision last week leading up to the Cowboys' eventual 20-16 win over the Vikings, so it comes as little surprise that he's trending toward a return to the lineup after he participated in both of the Cowboys' first two Week 9 practices. Barring a setback over the next day or two, Prescott will take back the reins of the offense from Rush, who performed capably against Minnesota in the first extended NFL action of his five-year career. He completed 24 of 40 pass attempts for 325 yards and two touchdowns in the victory, though he committed a pair of turnovers (an interception and a lost fumble).
Nov 1, 2021
Excels in first NFL start
Rush completed 24 of 40 pass attempts for 325 yards, two touchdowns, an interception and a fumble lost in Sunday's 20-16 win over the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Rush was called into action for his first career start after Dak Prescott (calf) was ruled out during warmups. Dallas' five-year backup responded without hesitation, posting big passing numbers while leading his team to what turned out to be an upset win on the road. The 27-year-old was not rattled by his moment in the national spotlight, commanding the offense with confidence while utilizing all of the Cowboys' top receiving weapons. Prescott has a good shot to return to action against the Broncos next week given his game-time decision tag in Week 8, so Rush is likely to return to backup duties. If for any reason he does end up starting again this season, the backup may have inspired enough confidence to trust in a spot start, or at least give the managers of Dallas' position players confidence that a huge drop in production isn't guaranteed.
Oct 31, 2021
Starting for Prescott in Week 8
Rush will start in place of Dak Prescott (calf) on Sunday in Minnesota, David Moore of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Prescott's availability came down to a pregame warmup as he tends to a right calf strain suffered back in Week 6 at New England. Over the course of the workout, it became increasingly clear that Rush would be the starter, with Rush getting the initial throws and Prescott and Will Grier mixing in behind him, according to Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News. With Prescott officially inactive, Rush will earn his first NFL start. How Rush fares remains to be seen because he has just three career passes and two rushes under his belt, but he did throw for at least 3,100 yards and 23 TDs in each of his final three seasons at Central Michigan from 2014 through 2016.
Oct 31, 2021
Staying ready for potential start
Rush took all of the Cowboys' team reps in practice this week, and some within the organization believe he'll start Sunday against the Vikings with top quarterback Dak Prescott's (ankle) status "up in the air," Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Even after a Week 7 bye, Prescott -- who is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff -- doesn't appear to have made a full recovery from the strained calf he suffered on the final play of Dallas' overtime win over the Patriots in Week 6. While Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network note that Prescott is pushing to play and will go through his normal pregame warmup routine, the franchise signal-caller was only able to take part in walk-through activities and 7-on-7 drills during practice this week. With that in mind, Dallas could be inclined to take a cautious approach with its franchise signal-caller if there's any concern about his health coming out of the warmup, potentially leaving Rush in line for his first extended regular-season action. Rush has previously made six appearances in his four-plus seasons in the NFL, logging only 29 snaps in total and attempting just three passes.
Aug 31, 2021
Wins No. 2 gig
Rush is one of two quarterbacks on the Cowboys' roster after the team cut Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci on Tuesday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Cowboys could still tentatively pursue another veteran option, but for at least the time being, Rush looks slated to operate as the backup to Dak Prescott (shoulder). That said, the team did recently pass on the opportunity to acquire Gardner Minshew in exchange for a late-round draft pick, instead allowing the Eagles to do so, which may be an indication that Dallas isn't in the market for an alternative backup option.
Aug 29, 2021
Falls flat in preseason finale
Rush completed four of eight passes for 16 yards in Sunday's preseason loss to the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old got the start in the preseason finale but had no success moving the ball, although he was working with the Cowboys' second-team offensive line and skill players against Jacksonville's first-team defense. Garrett Gilbert replaced Rush after three series and only did a little better against the Jags' second-teamers, leaving the backup situation behind Dak Prescott (shoulder) just as murky as it was coming into the game. There's still a strong chance Dallas will find a veteran QB to be the team's No. 2 after rosters are cut down Tuesday rather than trusting either Gilbert or Rush, but the front office did miss a chance to acquire Gardner Minshew earlier this week for only a Day 3 draft pick in 2022, which suggests the team isn't willing to give up any kind of real asset to address the position.
Aug 22, 2021
Making push for backup job
Rush could be putting pressure on Garrett Gilbert for the No. 2 QB job behind Dak Prescott (shoulder), Rob Phillips of DallasCowboys.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush was by far the most effective signal caller for the Cowboys on Saturday night, completing 10 of 12 passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile Gilbert, who got the start, completed three of five passes for 30 yards and lost a fumble, while Ben DiNucci was picked off three times by the Texans' second and third-string defenders in the second half. Any camp battle could wind up moot if the team brings in a more established veteran after rosters get cut down across the league, but based on Saturday's showing, Rush is making a case to surpass Gilbert on the current depth chart.
Aug 14, 2021
Looks healthy Friday
Rush completed seven of 13 passes for 89 yards in Friday's preseason loss to the Cardinals. He didn't throw a touchdown pass or an interception.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old picked up a minor shoulder injury last week, but Rush didn't seem bothered by it in Arizona. He was once again the second QB in the game after Garrett Gilbert, but Rush hasn't done much in exhibition action so far to put pressure on Gilbert for the No. 2 role during the regular season behind Dak Prescott (shoulder).
Aug 7, 2021
Picks up shoulder injury
Rush missed Saturday's joint practice with the Rams due to a shoulder injury, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
With Dak Prescott (shoulder) not in attendance for Thursday's Hall of Fame Game, Rush was the second Cowboys' quarterback on the field after backup Garrett Gilbert and ahead of fellow reserve Ben DiNucci. Rush completed eight of 13 passes for 70 yards, but he apparently came out the other side with a health concern. He'll aim to get healthy for the team's next preseason game Friday in Arizona.
Jul 27, 2021
Returns to practice
Rush (back) is present at Tuesday's practice, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush missed two days of practice due to a back injury, but he's already gotten healthy enough to get back on the field. The 27-year-old veteran is competing with Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci for reserve work behind Dak Prescott (ankle).
Jan 4, 2021
Secures pact with Dallas
Rush signed a contract with the Cowboys on Monday, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush signed a contract with Dallas as part of the reserves/future list for the 2021 season. The quarterback first joined Dallas back in 2017 as an undrafted free agent, and since then has bounced back and forth from the practice squad.
Nov 9, 2020
Demoted to practice squad
Rush reverted to the Cowboys' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Rush was active as a backup option to Garrett Gilbert for Sunday's home game against the Steelers, but he was not needed in a surprisingly close contest that ultimately saw Pittsburgh prevail 24-19. Ben DiNucci was a healthy scratch for Week 9, meaning that if Andy Dalton (concussion/illness) can't gain medical clearance by the time Dallas next plays Nov. 22 against Minnesota, Rush may be called up once again.
Nov 7, 2020
Likely not starting Week 9
Rush is not expected to start Sunday's game against the Steelers, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
It appears as if Garrett Gilbert will take over as the Cowboys' starting quarterback Sunday in lieu of Rush, who is expected to be called up to the active roster sometime this weekend. Given Ben DiNucci's struggles in the same role last week, it'll be interesting to see whether Rush or DiNucci act as the backup, particularly in what figures to be a tough matchup against the Steelers' defense.
Nov 3, 2020
Being considered for Week 9 start
The Cowboys are considering going with Rush as their starting quarterback Sunday against the Steelers after Andy Dalton (concussion) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
There was optimism Dalton would get through the concussion protocol in time for Sunday's game, only for the veteran to contract COVID-19. Ben DiNucci got the first opportunity under center this past Sunday at Philadelphia, leading the Cowboys to a 23-9 loss while completing 21 of 40 passes for 180 yards, getting sacked four times, losing two fumbles and gaining 22 yards on five carries. The ugly performance seems to be swaying coach Mike McCarthy to consider other options, namely Rush, who currently is on the team's practice squad. If McCarthy really is looking at all his options, Garrett Gilbert is other healthy QB in addition to DiNucci on the active roster.
Oct 11, 2020
Getting look from Houston
Rush will participate in a workout with the Texans, Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old quarterback most recently suited up as a member of the Giants' practice squad, but he apparently did not show enough for offensive coordinator Jason Garrett to consider him indispensable. Houston is taking a look at its developmental quarterback options, as the team currently has AJ McCarron, a Bill O'Brien-era holdover playing on a $4 million deal, in place as the No. 2 QB behind Deshaun Watson.
Sep 29, 2020
Drops from practice squad
The Giants cut Rush from the practice squad Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush followed Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett from Dallas to the Big Apple, but after three weeks, the QB was let go in favor of Clayton Thorson. Thorson will seek a new practice squad role elsewhere.
Sep 9, 2020
Inks practice squad contract
The Giants signed Rush to their practice squad Sunday, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush has a history with offensive coordinator Jason Garrett from their time in Dallas together, so he'll be a dependable depth QB heading into the 2020 season.
Sep 5, 2020
Shifts to waivers
The Giants waived Rush on Saturday, Michael Eisen of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett was Rush's head coach in Dallas last year, but Rush couldn't beat out Colt McCoy to be Daniel Jones' backup in 2020. Rush may stick around on the practice squad if he clears waivers.
May 5, 2020
Scooped up by Giants
The Giants claimed Rush off waivers from the Cowboys on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Rush will reunite with former Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, who accepted a position with the Giants as an offensive coordinator after being dismissed by Dallas in January. The 26-year-old Rush will likely battle with veterans Colt McCoy and Alex Tanney for the one or two backup spots available behind second-year starter Daniel Jones.
May 4, 2020
Done in Dallas
Rush was waived by the Cowboys on Monday, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
Dallas' decision to cut Rush comes following the news that Andy Dalton has officially signed with the team as Dak Prescott's backup. The selection of developmental project Ben DiNucci in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft also accounts for the team's No. 3 spot, making Rush the odd man out in Dallas' quarterback room. The 26-year-old only attempted three regular-season passes in three years since joining the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan in 2017, and he'll now be free to look for another depth opportunity with a new organization.
May 3, 2020
Roster spot in jeopardy
Rush could see his Cowboys tenure come to an end after the team signed Andy Dalton to be Dak Prescott's backup.
ANALYSIS
An undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan in 2017, Rush has held down the No. 2 QB spot behind Prescott but has only attempted three regular-season passes in three years. With a solid veteran in Dalton now on hand, and 2020 seventh-round pick Ben DiNucci available as a developmental option for new coach Mike McCarthy if the club wants to carry a third quarterback on the gameday roster, there would appear to be no room for Rush as well.
Mar 18, 2020
Signs RFA tender
Rush signed a one-year, $2.1 million contract with the Cowboys on Wednesday, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Cowboys have opted to lock Rush up for 2020 via a restricted free agent tender, putting him on track to return as the team's No. 2 option behind Dak Prescott. It remains to be seen whether the Cowboys will bring in competition for the backup gig during the offseason, and it's worth noting that Clayton Thorson will be retained for at least another year after having signed a reserve/futures contract.
Mar 13, 2020
Gets RFA tebder
The Cowboys gave Rush a restricted free agent tender, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old backup quarterback has played 26 offensive snaps in three seasons with Dallas, last throwing a pass in a regular-season game in 2017. Rush was shaky during preseason play the past two years, so it won't come as any surprise if the Cowboys bring in competition for the No. 2 QB job. To that effect, Clayton Thorson spent most of 2019 on the team's practice squad and then signed a reserve/futures contract at the end of the season.
