Three TDs including OT winner
Gibbs carried the ball 15 times for 219 yards and two touchdowns while catching 11 of 12 targets for 45 yards and a third TD in Sunday's 34-27 overtime win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The 11 catches and 12 targets were career highs for Gibbs as were the 264 scrimmage yards, while the 219 rushing yards were the most ever in a game by a Detroit player not named Barry Sanders. Gibbs saved his best for last as well -- after catching a three-yard TD pass in the second quarter and busting loose for a 49-yard score on the ground in the fourth, the third-year back dashed for a 69-yard rushing touchdown on the first play of OT. Through 11 games this season, Gibbs already has 10 rushing TDs -- his third straight season in double digits -- with 951 rushing yards on 6.1 yards per carry, while adding a 48-379-3 receiving line on 55 targets. He'll look to keep rolling in Week 13 during a Thanksgiving tilt against the Packers.

Excels as receiver
Gibbs rushed the ball 12 times for 39 yards in Sunday's 16-9 loss to the Eagles. He added five receptions on eight targets for 107 yards.
ANALYSIS
The Lions' offense struggled in the loss, with Gibbs being one of the few bright spots. He accounted for five of Detroit's 10 longest gains from scrimmage, including long receptions of 42, 33 and 17 yards, marking the first time he topped 100 receiving yards in his career. Gibbs was less efficient on the ground, though he's still topped 100 rushing yards in two of his last four matchups. He remains one of the best fantasy backs in the league due to his ability to affect the game in multiple ways.

Three TDs against Commanders
Gibbs rushed the ball 15 times for 142 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 44-22 win over the Commanders. He added three receptions on four targets for 30 yards and an additional score.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs showcased his entire skillset in Sunday's win, accounting for three touchdowns and 172 yards from scrimmage. His first score came on a route over the middle for 14 yards, which he then followed up with a tough 13-yard run into the end zone, during which he bullied his way through several defenders. Gibbs capped off his day with a 43-yard scamper down the right sideline, beating several Commanders' defenders with his speed. This was Gibbs' most productive fantasy performance of the season -- it was his second-highest yardage total of the campaign -- and marked his fourth game with either multiple trips to the end zone or 100 total yards from scrimmage.
Nov 2, 2025
Contained on 12 touches in loss
Gibbs rushed nine times for 25 yards and brought in all three targets for three yards in the Lions' 27-24 loss to the Vikings on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs' final line underscores the stellar job the Vikings defense managed to do containing him all afternoon, and the third-year pro's yardage totals were both his second lowest of the season. Ironically, Gibbs was coming out of the Week 8 bye after putting together his best game of the season (218 total yards and two rushing TDs) versus the Buccaneers in Week 7, and he'll look to revert to that caliber of production in a Week 10 road matchup against the Commanders.
Oct 20, 2025
Goes for over 200 yards and two TDs
Gibbs took 17 carries for 136 yards and a pair of touchdowns while adding three receptions for 82 yards in Monday's 24-9 win over the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs saved his best for the bright lights of Monday Night Football, generating his first 100-yard rushing game this season while going over 200 all-purpose yards for the first time in his career. The fantasy stud had cooled off over the Lions' last two contests, so managers have to feel elated receiving Monday's late boon to their scores. David Montgomery struggled to generate 39 yards on 15 touches, but he remains a steady presence as part of Detroit's thunder and lightning backfield. Gibbs sprints into the upcoming bye week tallying 720 combined yards from scrimmage and seven total touchdowns through seven starts in 2025. Fantasy GMs will have to hold things together until the Lions resume play against the Vikings on Nov. 2.
Oct 12, 2025
Can't get going against KC
Gibbs rushed the ball 17 times for 65 yards in Sunday's 30-17 loss to the Chiefs. He added one reception on two targets for zero yards.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs regained control of the Detroit backfield by a comfortable margin, out-touching David Montgomery 18-6. However, he had only five touches in the second half as the Lions were forced into a pass-heavy offense. Gibbs was inefficient with his opportunity on the ground, but the bigger concern is his lack of involvement as a pass catcher. He now has two or fewer catches in three consecutive games while recording a total of 39 receiving yards in that span. Despite some shortcomings in his profile, Gibbs' role in a strong offense will keep him as a must-start option, with Sunday's loss marking only the second time in six contests that he's failed to find the end zone.
Oct 5, 2025
Finds end zone as receiver
Gibbs rushed the ball 12 times for 54 yards in Sunday's 37-24 win over the Bengals. He added two receptions on two targets for 33 yards and a touchdown.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs has showcased his versatility in the Lions' offense in the last two games, primarily working as a rusher in Week 4 before being excellent as a pass catcher in Sunday's win. His touchdown came on an impressive 20-yard yard catch and run on a quick screen, during which he weaved through traffic before barreling through several players to reach the end zone. David Montgomery saw the majority of work in the fourth quarter with Detroit in control of the game, but Gibbs has still found the end zone in four straight games while surpassing 85 scrimmage yards in each of those contests.
Sep 28, 2025
Heavy workload as rusher
Gibbs rushed the ball 15 times for 91 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 34-10 win over Cleveland. He added two receptions on two targets for six yards.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs found the end zone early in the contest, ripping off an eight-yard score with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. He also chipped in two rushes of more than 20 yards in the second and third quarters to top 90 rushing yards for the second time in four games this season. With Detroit up by multiple scores for the entire second half, Gibbs saw limited opportunity as a receiver, the only downside to his box score Sunday. He now has four total touchdowns in as many games to begin the campaign, while also topping 90 yards from scrimmage in each of the last three games.
Sep 22, 2025
Stuffs stat sheet inefficiently
Gibbs took 22 carries for 67 yards and two touchdowns while catching five of six targets for 32 yards in Monday's 38-30 win over the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs was uncharacteristically inefficient on Monday Night Football, failing to crack the century mark in total yards despite handling a season high 27 touches. Fortunately for managers, the fantasy stud still generated RB1 numbers by making his second and third trips to the end zone this season. David Montgomery (12-151-2) also went off for Detroit in a shining example of true timeshare that can produce two valuable assets on a weekly basis. Gibbs will face another stiff test defensively when the Lions host the Browns on Sunday.
Sep 14, 2025
Eclipses 100 total yards Sunday
Gibbs rushed 12 times for 94 yards and a touchdown and brought in all three targets for 10 yards in the Lions' 52-21 win over the Bears on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Although Jared Goff and Amon-Ra St. Brown mostly stole the show in Detroit's jaw-dropping offensive breakout, Gibbs rather quietly put together a highly productive fantasy performance. The dynamic back outpaced David Montgomery by one carry and 37 rushing yards, with Gibbs' game-long 42-yard scamper the big difference between the two backfield mates. Gibbs also recorded his first rushing touchdown of the season on a six-yard run in the first quarter, which served to round out his production on a day where he was limited to a mid-level workload. Gibbs will look to navigate a particularly challenging matchup when the Lions travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens in a Week 3 Monday night showdown on Sept. 22.
Sep 7, 2025
Makes 10 catches
Gibbs rushed the ball nine times for 19 yards in Sunday's 27-13 loss to the Packers. He added 10 receptions on 10 targets for 31 yards.
ANALYSIS
There was plenty of offseason speculation that Gibbs would take over the backfield from David Montgomery, though Montgomery had 11 carries to Gibbs' nine. Gibbs still managed to salvage his day with a team-leading 10 catches, but he also found running room hard to come by in that context. Week 1 was a disastrous game for the Detroit offense overall, so a Week 2 matchup with the Bears should allow Gibbs to bounce back while also potentially clarifying his role in a more typical game script.
Jul 15, 2025
Taking more reps out wide
Gibbs said last week that new Lions offensive coordinator John Morton has him splitting out wide "way more than I was the past two years," per WXYZ-TV Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs got a career-high 11 targets in January's playoff loss to Washington, after catching at least four passes in each of the final five regular-season games. His receiving involvement spiked following David Montgomery's MCL injury, with Gibbs having averaged just 2.3 catches and 3.0 targets per game in Weeks 1-13. There's a chance the pass-catching production becomes more consistent under a new playcaller, and also some chance Gibbs takes more of the workload away from Montgomery in general, but there's risk Detroit's offense isn't as efficient overall after losing former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Bears this offseason. The Lions also lost starting right guard Kevin Zeitler (Titans) and center Frank Ragnow (retirement), but they're bringing back all their other 2024 starters on offense, including the elite OT duo of Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker.
Jan 19, 2025
Massive effort in loss
Gibbs rushed the ball 14 times for 105 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 45-31 divisional-round loss to the Commanders. He added six receptions on 11 targets for 70 yards.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs was a bright spot in the disappointing playoff exit for Detroit. Even with David Montgomery back in the mix, Gibbs led the backfield with 20 touches as opposed to only seven for Montgomery. Gibbs found the end zone twice from two and eight yards away, while also adding explosive gains of 33, 23 and 15 yards to post his highest yardage total of the campaign. He'll enter 2025 in the third year of his rookie contract and should remain a driving force in the Detroit offense after posting 1,929 yards and 20 yards from scrimmage across 17 regular season games in 2024.
Jan 5, 2025
Clinches top seed with four TDs
Gibbs rushed 23 times for 139 yards and three touchdowns while catching all five of his targets for 31 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 31-9 win over the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs scored all four of the touchdowns by either team in Detroit's convincing win, which capped the regular season by securing the top seed in the NFC for the Lions. The four touchdowns brought Gibbs' season total to a league-leading 20 (16 rushing, four receiving), which were accompanied by 1,929 scrimmage yards. He'll likely handle a heavy workload in the NFC divisional round following Detroit's bye in the wild-card round, even if the Lions get David Montgomery (knee) back for their playoff run.
Dec 30, 2024
Exceeds 160 total yards in win
Gibbs rushed 18 times for 117 yards and a touchdown and brought in all four targets for 46 yards in the Lions' 40-34 win over the 49ers on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs once again functioned as the clear lead back and handled the role with plenty of success, exceeding 100 yards on the ground and recording a rushing TD for the second time in as many games with David Montgomery (knee) sidelined. Gibbs' 30-yard scamper up the right sideline with just under three minutes remaining closed out the scoring on the night for Detroit and served as his 16th total touchdown on the campaign. Gibbs should be in line for another critical role as the Lions face off with the Vikings on Sunday night in Week 18 to determine the NFC North winner and NFC's No. 1 seed.
Dec 22, 2024
Excels as clear lead back
Gibbs rushed 23 times for 109 yards and a touchdown while catching four of five targets for 45 yards in Sunday's 34-17 win over the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs got all the touches he could handle in the first game since fellow Lions running back David Montgomery suffered a regular-season ending knee injury, racking up 119 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries and three catches in the first half alone. After being tackled at the 1-yard line on three consecutive runs, Gibbs finally got across the goal line on his fourth try to put the Lions up 10-0 in the first quarter. He wound up exceeding his previous season high of 24 touches by three en route to 154 scrimmage yards despite the Lions incorporating backups Craig Reynolds and Sione Vaki more frequently while nursing a double-digit lead the entire second half. Gibbs is poised for another heavy workload in Week 17 against the 49ers, who have been eliminated from playoff contention.
Dec 16, 2024
Workhorse role coming?
Gibbs appears positioned to inherit an increased backfield role, as David Montgomery (knee) is out indefinitely due to a potentially significant MCL injury sustained during Sunday's 48-42 loss to the Bills, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs piled up 114 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns during Sunday's loss to Buffalo, a contest in which Detroit was forced to play from behind and adopt a pass-heavy approach. Montgomery's MCL injury seems to have also factored into Gibbs' increased role, rather than the two operating in a fairly even timeshare, as per usual. Now, with Montgomery potentially in danger of missing the remainder of the 2024 campaign, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Gibbs seems to be facing a clear path to workhorse opportunities down the stretch, making him matchup-proof. Gibbs hasn't required a hefty workload in order to produce this season, but with Craig Reynolds and Sione Vaki now positioned as his top complementary options, he seems positioned as the Lions' clear backfield leader heading into a road matchup against the Bears in Week 16.
Dec 15, 2024
Pair of scores in loss
Gibbs rushed the ball eight times for 31 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 48-42 loss to the Bills. He added five receptions on seven targets for 83 yards and an additional score.
ANALYSIS
The Lions attempted only 15 rushes in the game, as they were forced into a pass-heavy offensive scheme while chasing points. That led to a modest day on the ground for Gibbs, though he did punch in a one-yard rushing score midway through the fourth quarter. He also shone as a pass-catcher, with all five of his receptions going for gains of at least 10 yards, highlighted by a 12-yard touchdown grab early in the final quarter. All told, it was Gibbs' second consecutive multi-touchdown performance and the eighth time he's topped 100 yards from scrimmage for the season.
Dec 6, 2024
Scores receiving TD in win
Gibbs rushed 15 times for 43 yards and secured all six targets for 30 yards and a touchdown in the Lions' 34-31 win over the Packers on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs and backfield mate David Montgomery struggled to find consistent running room, and 20 of Gibbs' rushing yards actually came on one carry. However, the second-year back tied Tim Patrick for the lead in receptions and recorded his second receiving touchdown of the season on a two-yard catch just before halftime. Gibbs now has four total touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving) over the last four games heading into a Week 15 home clash against the Bills on Sunday night, Dec. 15.
Nov 28, 2024
Garners 11 touches Thursday
Gibbs rushed nine times for 87 yards while catching two of four targets 17 yards in Thursday's 23-20 win over the Bears. He also lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs' efficient performance on the ground raised his season average to 6.0 yards per carry, but his first catch of the game resulted in a fumble on Chicago's six-yard line. He finished with 12 fewer rushing attempts than David Montgomery (shoulder) but was only one rushing yard behind Montgomery's team-leading total, and neither found the end zone after scoring 11 times apiece in Detroit's first 11 games. Gibbs and Montgomery should continue to platoon against the Packers next Thursday in Week 14.
Nov 24, 2024
Takes over in second half
Gibbs rushed 21 times for 90 yards and two touchdowns while bringing in all three of his targets for nine receiving yards in Sunday's 24-6 win over the Colts.
ANALYSIS
Detroit's talented backfield featured both co-starters scoring touchdowns in the first half of Sunday's win. Gibbs was afforded extra opportunities and a second score after David Montgomery (shoulder) exited the contest with a shoulder injury in the third quarter. The 22-year-old Gibbs is now up to 10 rushing touchdowns through 11 games this season, matching the entire total from his 15-game rookie campaign. If Montgomery's injury forces him to miss the Lions' next contest, Gibbs would become the primary back in a tasty matchup against the Bears on Thanksgiving Day.
Nov 17, 2024
Rushing TD in efficient performance
Gibbs rushed 11 times for 69 yards and a touchdown and brought in his only target for a 54-yard catch in the Lions' 52-6 win over the Jaguars on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs logged four fewer carries than backfield mate David Montgomery but gained just six less yards, and he finished third on the Lions in receiving yards thanks to a career-long 54-yard reception. Gibbs also recorded his fifth rushing touchdown in the last five games on a one-yard run early in the second quarter, making it yet another rewarding fantasy afternoon for the explosive second-year back. Gibbs next takes aim at a vulnerable Colts defense in a Week 12 road matchup next Sunday.
Nov 10, 2024
Cracks century mark on 21 touches
Gibbs rushed 19 times for 71 yards while catching two of three targets for 37 yards in Sunday's 26-23 win over the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs was the only position player for either side to crack 100 total yards from scrimmage in an odd game that featured seven combined interceptions. Co-starter David Montgomery struggled on the ground (12-32-1), but was also the beneficiary of Detroit's lone rushing touchdown on the night. Both tailbacks should be considered universal starts in all fantasy formats heading into a soft matchup against the Jaguars next Sunday.
Nov 3, 2024
Tallies eighth touchdown
Gibbs rushed the ball 11 times for 65 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 24-14 win over the Packers. He added one reception on two targets for 11 yards.
ANALYSIS
David Montgomery was the favored option in the Detroit backfield in rainy conditions and a positive game script. However, Gibbs had the better fantasy performance thanks to his performance on the team's first possession of the second half when he tallied an 18-yard rush before finding the end zone from 15 yards away. Gibbs now has eight total touchdowns and has scored in three consecutive games.
Oct 27, 2024
Pops long touchdown
Gibbs rushed the ball 11 times for 127 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 52-14 win over the Titans. He added one reception on one target for six yards.
ANALYSIS
The Lions had limited volume offensively as their defense and special teams set them up with short fields throughout the day. That led to muted efforts from most of the team's skill-position players, though Gibbs managed to break free for a 70-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter when he burst through the line and raced down the sideline while barely being touched. He has now topped 100 rushing yards in consecutive games and 100 total yards in four of seven contests.
Oct 20, 2024
Standout all-around effort in win
Gibbs rushed 15 times for 116 yards and two touchdowns and brought in all four targets for 44 yards in the Lions' 31-29 win over the Vikings on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs led the Lions' ground game across the board and also finished as the second-leading pass catcher in both receptions and receiving yards. The versatile second-year pro recorded his second multi-touchdown effort in three games as well with 45- and eight-yard scoring runs in the second quarter, and his rushing yardage total was a new season high. Gibbs workload was aided by the fact backfield mate David Montgomery missed some time in the first half due to a knee injury, but the Alabama product's numbers stand out under any circumstance. Gibbs next takes aim at the Titans defense in a Week 8 home matchup.
Oct 13, 2024
Overshadowed by Montgomery
Gibbs rushed the ball 12 times for 63 yards in Sunday's 47-9 win over the Cowboys. He added three receptions on five targets for 28 yards.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs worked evenly with David Montgomery on the ground and was much better as a pass catcher, though Montgomery's fantasy performance was superior thanks to a pair of scores. Even so, Gibbs turned in a fine performance that was highlighted by a 20-yard reception and five rush attempts that went for at least five yards. He now has a minium of 78 total yards from scrimmage in all five games this season, though he has ceded a lot of work at the goal line to David Montgomery.
Sep 30, 2024
Two rushing TDs in win
Gibbs rushed 14 times for 78 yards and two touchdowns and wasn't targeted in the Lions' 42-29 win over the Seahawks on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
Although the lack of work in the passing game was less than ideal, Gibbs' fantasy managers had to be elated with seeing the talented back get two opportunities from inside the five-yard line that culminated in touchdowns, considering how often he's frequently passed over for David Montgomery in such scenarios. Gibbs went in from three yards and one yard out in the second quarter, his first trips to the end zone on the ground since Week 1. He's yet to crack the 100-yard threshold this season, but he's now on an impressive three-game run of efficient work on the ground that's seen him amass 245 yards on 43 carries. Gibbs now gets a chance for some early-season rest via a Week 5 bye before returning to action on the road Sunday, Oct. 13 against a short-handed Cowboys defense that's struggled to stop the run.
Sep 22, 2024
Tops 100 scrimmage yards with TD
Gibbs rushed 16 times for 83 yards and added a 20-yard receiving touchdown in Sunday's 20-13 win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs motored into the end zone from 20 yards out after taking a lateral from Amon-Ra St. Brown to give Detroit a 20-7 lead late in the first half. That yardage counted toward Gibbs' receiving total, but he wasn't credited with a target or catch on the play and didn't see a target for the rest of the game, leading to an unconventional stat line with a receiving touchdown but no targets. Gibbs has surpassed 100 scrimmage yards in consecutive games heading into a Week 4 MNF home game against the Seahawks.
Sep 15, 2024
Gets 20 touches in Week 2 loss
Gibbs rushed 13 times for 84 yards and caught all seven of his targets for 22 yards in Sunday's 20-16 loss to the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs kept Detroit's hopes alive with a 23-yard run to convert on 4th-and-1 with 1:23 remaining, but he was tackled short of the line to gain on a fourth-down catch 30 seconds later. Gibbs out-gained David Montgomery by 49 yards on the ground and also got seven of the 12 targets among Lions running backs (four for Montgomery, one for Sione Vaki), but Montgomery got the opportunity to punch in a one-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter and capitalized on it. Despite being Detroit's 1B option by the goal line, Gibbs should remain heavily involved Week 3 against the Cardinals thanks to his versatility and explosiveness.
Sep 9, 2024
Scores TD in Week 1 win
Gibbs rushed 11 times for 40 yards and a touchdown while catching four of six targets for 34 yards in Sunday's 26-20 overtime win over the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs was outproduced on the ground by David Montgomery (17 carries for 91 yards and a touchdown), but the second-year running back got a couple goal-line carries late in the first half and made the most of the opportunity, punching in a one-yard touchdown at the two-minute warning. It was Gibbs' 11th rushing touchdown in 16 career regular-season games. Gibbs also tied for second on the team in targets, so he was involved both on the ground and through the air as usual. With no sign of the hamstring injury that sidelined him in August, Gibbs should maintain a prominent role in Week 2 against the Buccaneers.
Sep 4, 2024
Sidesteps injury report
Gibbs (hamstring) wasn't listed on the Lions' injury report Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Although the Lions didn't hold a session Wednesday, Gibbs wouldn't have been inhibited in his on-field work if the team had done so. As a result, he's good to go for Sunday night's contest against the Rams after sustaining a hamstring issue in an Aug. 12 practice. Gibbs again will split Detroit's backfield with David Montgomery in 2024, which amounted to 1,261 yards from scrimmage and 11 total TDs on 232 touches in 15 regular-season games last year.
Sep 3, 2024
Feels nearly 100 percent
Gibbs (hamstring) said Tuesday he feels 98 to 100 percent healthy and said he's "good" for Sunday's regular-season opener against the Rams, Eric Woodyard of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Dan Campbell said Monday that Gibbs isn't a player whose status concerns him for Week 1, so it sounds like the star running back is fully expected to be available Sunday. In the event that Gibbs feels anything less than 100 percent healthy by the end of the practice week, though, there will be a possibility that the Lions lean a bit more heavily on David Montgomery versus Los Angeles. Gibbs said he feels "more confident overall" heading into Year 2, and even at less than full health he offers high upside as one of the most explosive backfield weapons in the league.
Sep 2, 2024
No concerns for Week 1
Coach Dan Campbell said Monday that Gibbs (hamstring) is not a player whose injury status is a concern for Sunday's regular-season opener against the Rams, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Campbell named Ifeatu Melifonwu (undisclosed) as the only player the Lions are significantly concerned about for Week 1, meaning both Gibbs and standout TE Sam LaPorta (hamstring) should be good for the season opener. Both Gibbs and LaPorta resumed practicing last week after missing much of training camp due to hamstring injuries. While it doesn't sound like Gibbs is in any real danger of missing Week 1, it's still possible that Detroit could opt to lean on backfield mate David Montgomery a bit more until the hamstring issue is further in the rearview.
Aug 26, 2024
Returns to practice
Gibbs (hamstring) returned to practice Sunday, Nolan Bianchi of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs made it back on the day Dan Campbell had predicted, but the coach didn't provide any details about the extent of his running back's participation. Gibbs missed two weeks of practice with a hamstring strain and now has two weeks to get ready for Detroit's season opener against the Rams on Sept. 8.
Aug 20, 2024
Could resume practicing Sunday
Lions coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday that Gibbs (hamstring) is "trending the right way" and may resume practicing Sunday or next week, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Campbell mentioned Sunday as the possible return date for a bunch of his injured players, following Detroit's preseason finale against Pittsburgh on Saturday. It presumably won't be a strenuous practice just one day after an exhibition, but Gibbs' fantasy managers would nonetheless be thrilled to see him back on the field in any capacity. The young RB left practice early last Monday with a hamstring injury and has now been out for more than a week.
Aug 14, 2024
Limited concern from coach Campbell
Lions head coach Dan Campbell suggested Wednesday that he's optimistic about Gibbs' health after the running back suffered a hamstring injury in Monday's practice, Eric Woodyard of ESPN.com reports. "I think we're gonna be fine here," Campbell told 97-1 The Ticket Detroit. "So, I think we'll be good."
ANALYSIS
Campbell didn't get into details or provide a timeline for Gibbs, merely hinting at general optimism. Gibbs suffered the injury 27 days before Detroit's season opener Sept. 8 at the Rams, and while he's unlikely to practice for at least the next week or two, he seemingly has a chance to be ready for the rematch of last year's wild-card playoff game.
Aug 12, 2024
Injures hamstring
Gibbs left Monday's practice early due to a hamstring injury, Colton Pouncy of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Hamstring injuries can be tricky to gauge, so it remains to be seen how serious the issue is for Gibbs. When healthy, he is expected to play a predominant role in Detroit's offense. Expect the Lions to err on the side of caution with their prized backfield asset in order to ensure his long term health.
Aug 12, 2024
Exits practice early
Gibb's left Monday's practice early to be evaluated for a leg injury, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
There is no word on the severity of Gibbs' injury or if the Lions are just erring on the side of caution with the 2023 first round pick. When healthy, the electric back is expected to share the backfield with David Montgomery. He also figures to be available all over the formation in passing situations. It remains to be seen if he will miss any more practice time going forward.
Aug 8, 2024
Unlikely to suit up Thursday
Gibbs isn't suited up ahead of Thursday's preseason game at the Giants, Justin Rogers of DetroitFootball.net reports.
ANALYSIS
Both Gibbs and David Montgomery will be in street clothes for the Lions' exhibition opener, which will leave Craig Reynolds, Sione Vaki, Zonovan Knight, Jermar Jefferson and Jake Funk to work out of the backfield. Gibbs has been working all over the formation during training camp to date, potentially setting him up to easily surpass the 234 touches for 1,261 yards from scrimmage and 11 total touchdowns that he compiled in 15 regular-season contests as a rookie in 2023.
Jul 25, 2024
Working at multiple positions
Gibbs (undisclosed) is practicing in full at training camp and took part in wide receiver position drills Thursday, Nolan Bianchi of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs missed some time during spring practices due to a soft tissue injury, but he isn't showing any signs of being hampered at training camp. Route running appears to be a priority area of improvement for Gibbs this offseason, as after taking part in receiver drills he stayed on the field for extra work alongside All-Pro teammate Amon-Ra St. Brown. Gibbs said he and St. Brown worked on releases Thursday, and that they plan to spend time Friday going over different route techniques. General manager Brad Holmes talked up Gibbs as a multi-position playmaker after drafting him 12th overall in 2023, so it's encouraging to see the Lions now invest time into improving his ability to work as a pass-catcher in the intermediate area of the field. That type of utilization could allow Gibbs to materialize as a true Year 2 breakout, even with positional mate David Montgomery still projected to handle notable volume out of the backfield.
Jun 6, 2024
Sidelined by minor injury
Gibbs has missed spring practices due to a soft tissue injury, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The Lions expect Gibbs to be ready for the start of training camp in late July, though coach Dan Campbell noted that the running back's absence this spring is a missed opportunity for growth. Gibbs nonetheless figures to be a huge part of Detroit's offense this season, with the big question being whether he'll take away some of the work that went to backfield mate David Montgomery last year.

To see more touches in 2024
Appearing on The Rich Eisen Show on Monday, Lions GM Brad Holmes said he "definitely would expect" Gibbs to "see more of the load" out of the backfield in 2024.
ANALYSIS
Holmes added that he thinks Gibbs will also be even more involved in the passing game in his second season. Only seven running backs saw more targets than Gibbs' 71 in 2023, and his 52 catches were tied for the ninth-most at the position. Backfield mate David Montgomery out-carried Gibbs 219 to 182, but Gibbs had a commanding edge in the pass game with 47 more targets than the veteran. There's reason to believe Gibbs' touches will rise in 2024, but Montgomery isn't going away. This backfield will remain a one-two punch, and Montgomery is the favorite for carries when the Lions are trying to kill the clock when they have a lead. Gibbs' fantasy ceiling remains extremely high due to the overall explosive nature of Detroit's offense.

Key fumble in loss
Gibbs rushed the ball 12 times for 45 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 34-31 loss to the 49ers. He added two receptions on four targets for 11 yards.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs began the game well, picking up 35 yards from scrimmage on the team's first four possessions. He had a highlight reel 15-yard touchdown run on the final drive in that span, juking several defenders and breaking through a couple tackles in the process. Things took a turn for the worse midway through the third quarter, however, as Gibbs lost a fumble that led directly to a game-tying touchdown for San Francisco. He got only one touch after that play, a sour close to an otherwise excellent rookie season during which he posted 1,261 yards from scrimmage with 11 total touchdowns across 15 regular season games. Gibbs will be back with the Lions in 2024 and should lead the backfield alongside David Montgomery.

Finds end zone against Bucs
Gibbs carried the ball nine times for 74 yards and a touchdown and caught all four of his targets for 40 yards in Sunday's 31-23 divisional-round win over the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
The rookie running back topped 100 scrimmage yards in his second career playoff game and got into the end zone for the third straight contest, putting the Lions in the lead for good with a 31-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter. Gibbs posted his best rushing yardage total since Week 16 in Sunday's win, and he figures to be busy again next weekend in the NFC Championship Game against the 49ers.
Jan 14, 2024
Goes for 68 yards plus score
Gibbs rushed eight times for 25 yards and a touchdown while corralling all four of his targets for 43 yards in Sunday's 24-23 playoff win over the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs was an integral part of building Detroit's early 14-3 lead when he scored his club's second rushing touchdown of the first quarter in Sunday's NFC wild-card victory. Starter David Montgomery (14-57-1) hit pay dirt on the Lions' first possession, then Gibbs followed with a10-yard scamper up the middle on the ensuing offensive drive. Jared Goff then followed with a touchdown pass to tight end Sam LaPorta to complete a trifecta of touchdowns on the team's first three possessions. The offense cooled thereafter, but the early point explosion was enough to lift the team to the next round of the playoffs. Expect the Lions to get Gibbs to double-digit touches in the upcoming NFC divisional round.
Jan 7, 2024
Rushing TD in season-ending win
Gibbs rushed 13 times for 30 yards and a touchdown and failed to bring in his only target in the Lions' 30-20 win over the Vikings on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The rookie had a quiet finish to his first regular season except for a three-yard scoring run in the first quarter. Gibbs' touches were limited more than usual with the postseason on the horizon, and the Alabama product is expected to play a big role in the playoffs after a regular season that saw him compile 945 rushing yards, 316 receiving yards and 10 total touchdowns in 15 games.
Dec 30, 2023
Inefficient night in close loss
Gibbs rushed 15 times for 43 yards and brought in one of three targets for no gain in the Lions' 20-19 loss to the Cowboys on Saturday night.
ANALYSIS
The electric rookie couldn't quite get loose for any significant gains Saturday night, with his longest run going for just 17 yards and Gibbs averaging under 2.0 yards per carry on his other 14 totes. He was also held without positive receiving yardage for only the second time all season, and Gibbs also saw his three-game touchdown streak snapped. The first-round pick will look to put together a better performance in order to head into the postseason with some momentum when the Lions face the Vikings in the Week 18 finale on Jan. 7.
Dec 24, 2023
Keeps finding pay dirt
Gibbs rushed 15 times for 80 yards and two touchdowns while catching four of seven targets for 20 yards during Sunday's 30-24 win over the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Christmas again came early for Gibbs investors with the rookie posting at least 100 total yards and two total touchdowns in consecutive games to open the fantasy playoffs. He didn't even need a full workload to accomplish the feat, either, as David Montgomery handled the first seven rushing attempts of the game and 17 carries in total. Instead, Gibbs came in after Montgomery started wearing Minnesota down and beat the defense with his speed, not only by darting for a 14-yard touchdown run in the first half but also by dusting the Vikings defense for a near-touchdown on 4th-and-1 in the fourth quarter. Now joining Barry Sanders and Billy Sims as the only Lions players to post at least 1,000 total yards and 10 touchdowns as a rookie, Gibbs will look to remain productive in a challenging Week 17 showdown with the Cowboys.
Dec 17, 2023
Big performance in blowout win
Gibbs rushed the ball 11 times for 100 yards and one touchdown in Saturday's 42-17 win over the Broncos. He added two receptions on two targets for eight yards and another score.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs was out-touched by David Montgomery, but he was the far more efficient back. Seven of his 11 rushing attempts went for more than five yards, with his longest going for 34. He also found the end zone twice, first on a nine-yard reception midway through the second quarter and then on a rush from 12 yards away early in the final quarter. Gibbs has been limited to around 14 touches per game since David Montgomery returned from injury, but he's been incredibly efficient with that work, and he now has eight touchdowns across his eight games.
Dec 10, 2023
Returns to end zone
Gibbs rushed the ball 11 times for 66 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 28-13 loss to the Bears. He added three receptions on four targets for 16 yards.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs split work out of the backfield nearly exactly evenly with David Montgomery, and the duo had nearly identical stat lines. Gibbs ultimately had the more productive day thanks to a 12-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter, his sixth trip to the end zone in his last seven games. He's also topped 80 total yards from scrimmage in three of five contests since David Montgomery returned from a rib injury. Gibbs should be in a favorable position to close the season, particularly in a Week 15 matchup against a Broncos defense that has a particularly leaky run defense.
Dec 3, 2023
Nine touches in Week 13 win
Gibbs rushed eight times for 60 yards and brought in one of two targets for minus-6 yards in the Lions' 33-28 win over the Saints on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The explosive rookie back looked like he might be on his way to a big day early with a 36-yard run on his first touch, but that would turn out to be the highlight of his afternoon. Backfield mate David Montgomery outpaced Gibbs by 10 rush attempts, although the latter did gain four more rushing yards. Gibbs hasn't topped 11 carries in any of his last three games, although a Week 14 road matchup could prove to be a more conducive to the ground attack for the entirety of the contest.
Nov 23, 2023
Totals 73 yards
Gibbs rushed 11 times for 54 yards while securing four of eight targets for 19 yards during Thursday's 29-22 loss to Green Bay.
ANALYSIS
After seeing two more carries than David Montgomery did in the first game after Detroit's Week 9 bye, Gibbs has trailed his counterpart by four carries in each of the past two weeks. While the Alabama product has still been seeing more touches per game lately thanks to a huge role in the passing game -- and he could have had a more productive day had Jared Goff been more accurate on a couple of Gibbs' looks -- Gibbs' upside is undoubtedly capped by Montgomery, who racked up his eighth touchdown in seven games this season. The Detroit offense will look to keep fostering two productive running backs when the Lions reconvene for a Week 13 road matchup with a Saints defense that has allowed the fourth-fewest receptions to running backs in 2023.
Nov 19, 2023
Extends TD streak to four games
Gibbs rushed eight times for 36 yards and a touchdown while catching all six of his targets for 59 yards in Sunday's 31-26 win over the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs got the Lions on the board in the second quarter with a two-yard rushing touchdown. That was the fifth rushing touchdown in the last four games for the 2023 first-round pick after Gibbs opened his career with a four-game touchdown drought. Gibbs will look to extend his touchdown streak to five games on Thanksgiving against the Packers as part of Detroit's one-two punch in the backfield alongside David Montgomery.
Nov 12, 2023
Scores two TDs in Week 10 win
Gibbs carried the ball 14 times for 77 yards and two touchdowns and caught three of five targets for 35 yards in Sunday's 41-38 win over the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
While David Montgomery returned from a rib injury Sunday and led the Lions with 116 rushing yards and a score of his own, Gibbs wound up seeing five more touches while nearly matching his scrimmage yardage total. The rookie also produced more points, scoring on a pair of one-yard TD plunges in the first and second quarters. Gibbs and Montgomery seems likely to remain in a timeshare while both are healthy, but both could come up big again in Week 11 against the Bears.
Nov 8, 2023
May cut into Montgomery's lead role
Lions head coach Dan Campbell indicated Monday that Gibbs could see an uptick in his work in the team's backfield rotation during the second half of the season, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports. "I don't think necessarily, talking to you right now, that I see Gibbs getting 65 plays. I don't see that," Campbell said. "But he's going to get his fair share now. We know what we can be and he's growing, so I think it'll be a little bit by committee and make sure we get those guys touches. Gibbs'll
ANALYSIS
After missing two straight games with a hamstring injury, Gibbs returned to action Week 7 and took hold of a lead role in the absence of David Montgomery (rib). In a loss to the Ravens in Week 7 and a win over the Raiders in Week 8, Gibbs played 86 and 69 percent of the Lions' snaps on offense, respectively, compiling 220 yards and two touchdowns (on 37 carries) and 14 receptions for 95 yards (on 15 targets) between the two contests. Though Montgomery was listed as a full practice participant Wednesday coming out of the Lions' Week 9 bye and appears poised to play Sunday against the Chargers, Campbell's comments suggest that Montgomery could cede more work to the Gibbs than he had on the occasions when both were available in three of the Lions' first four games. In those three games, Gibbs still averaged just shy of 12 touches (7.3 carries, 4.3 receptions), but the rookie's ability to handle even heavier workloads over the last two contests without sacrificing much efficiency might be reason enough for Campbe
Oct 31, 2023
Scores first home touchdown in win
Gibbs rushed 26 times for 152 yards and a touchdown while bringing in all five targets for 37 yards in the Lions' 26-14 win over the Raiders on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
It was milestone night for Gibbs, who set a new career high in rushing yards while also recording his first home touchdown via a 27-yard run late in the third quarter. That scoring scamper served as Gibbs' longest run of the night, underscoring how consistently efficient he was throughout the contest. David Montgomery (ribs) figures to be healthy by the time the Lions come out of their Week 9 bye, so how the division of labor will shake out between him and Montgomery in Week 10 against the Chargers will be something to monitor.
Oct 22, 2023
Totals 126 yards as lead back
Gibbs rushed the ball 11 times for 68 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 38-6 loss to the Ravens. He added nine receptions on 10 targets for 58 yards.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs got a chance to lead the Detroit backfield with David Montgomery (ribs) sidelined, and he delivered 126 total yards. He found room to run difficult for most of the game, though that changed early in the fourth quarter -- with the outcome decided -- when he scored his first career touchdown from 21 yards away. Gibbs' volume as a receiver was also notable, as he entered the contest with only 18 targets combined across his first four games. It's unclear whether Montgomery will be back for the Lions' Week 8 matchup against the Raiders, but Gibbs could be in line for another significant workload.
Oct 20, 2023
Ready for Week 7
Gibbs (hamstring) doesn't have a designation for Sunday's contest at Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs kicked off Week 7 prep with back-to-back limited practices, but coach Dan Campbell said Friday that the rookie running back is "gonna be a go" for Sunday following a two-game absence due to a hamstring issue, according to Colton Pouncy of The Athletic. With the Lions' top backfield option David Montgomery (ribs) ruled out and reserve Craig Reynolds (hamstring/toe) questionable to play, Gibbs doesn't have many obstacles to a huge workload this weekend, which could yield fruit as he's averaged 4.6 yards on his 39 carries and recorded 14 catches (on 18 targets) for 70 yards in four appearances.
Oct 20, 2023
Expected to play
Coach Dan Campbell said Friday that Gibbs (hamstring) is "gonna be a go" for Sunday's game in Baltimore, Colton Pouncy of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs likely will return from a two-game absence and take on a role as Detroit's lead back, as David Montgomery (ribs) hasn't practiced since his early exit from last week's win over Tampa Bay. The Lions may still opt to list Gibbs as questionable on the final injury report Friday afternoon, and there's also some question about the backup situation with Craig Reynolds (hamstring/toe) banged up as well.
Oct 19, 2023
Limited again Thursday
Gibbs (hamstring) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday.
ANALYSIS
While the Lions' No. 1 running back David Montgomery (ribs) again was absent from drills Thursday, Gibbs maintained his activity level from Wednesday's walkthrough. At the same time, fellow back Craig Reynolds (hamstring/toe) had a cap on his reps after sitting out the first session of Week 7 prep. Gibbs and Reynolds appear to be the best bets among the trio to be available Sunday at Baltimore, but ultimately Friday's practice report will indicate whether one or both have a designation for that contest.
Oct 19, 2023
Practicing again
Gibbs (hamstring) is practicing Thursday, Colton Pouncy of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs and Craig Reynolds (hamstring) both are practicing, while David Montgomery (ribs) is absent for a second straight day. Gibbs dominated backfield work the last time Montgomery missed a game, though the rookie might not get as much work if he returns for Sunday's matchup in Baltimore after missing the last two weeks.
Oct 18, 2023
Limited at walkthrough
Gibbs (hamstring) was a limited participant at Wednesday's walkthrough.
ANALYSIS
After sitting out the last two games due to a hamstring issue, Gibbs has a glimmer of hope to return Week 7. First and foremost, there's an expectation that the team's top running back David Montgomery will miss time due to a rib cartilage issue that he sustained this past Sunday at Tampa Bay. Then, on Monday, coach Dan Campbell told Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site that Gibbs was trending in the right direction ahead of Sunday's contest at Baltimore. Gibbs may have to log a full session by Friday in order to avoid a designation for that game, but even if he doesn't, he appears to be the healthiest RB on the active roster with Craig Reynolds (hamstring/toe) joining Montgomery on the sideline Wednesday.
Oct 16, 2023
Trending in right direction
Coach Dan Campbell said Monday that Gibbs (hamstring) is trending toward playing next Sunday against the Ravens, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury he sustained in practice ahead of Week 5. With David Montgomery (ribs) now looking at missing at least one game, the Lions might need to lean even more on Gibbs, though Craig Reynolds, Devine Ozigbo and Zonovan Knight also remain in the backfield mix for Detroit.
Oct 13, 2023
Ruled out for Week 6
Gibbs (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday's game in Tampa Bay, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs hurt his hamstring at the end of last Friday's practice and now will miss a second straight game. His failure to practice this week suggests he's also at risk of missing Week 7 in Baltimore, though the Lions haven't commented on expectations beyond this Sunday. They're left with Craig Reynolds behind lead back David Montgomery, while Zonovan Knight (shoulder) is expected to miss the rest of the season.
Oct 13, 2023
Missing another practice
Gibbs (hamstring) isn't practicing Friday, Colton Pouncy of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Another absence suggest Gibbs is unlikely to play Sunday in Tampa Bay, especially after he told reporters earlier this week that Friday would be crucial to determining his availability. Craig Reynolds will be next up behind David Montgomery in the event of another Gibbs absence, and there isn't much competition after fellow reserve Zonovan Knight suffered a season-ending shoulder injury last week. Montgomery has topped 70 percent snap in three of his four appearances this year, including 75 percent last week with Gibbs sidelined for a win over the Panthers.
Oct 12, 2023
No practice again Thursday
Gibbs (hamstring) officially didn't practice Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs hasn't practiced since he showed up on last Friday's injury report as a limited participant and doubtful to play Week 5 against the Panthers. He subsequently sat out this past Sunday's game, and he told Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press on Wednesday that he won't have an idea of his potential to return until after Friday's session. As a result, Gibbs' status will be of keen interest when the Lions post their final Week 6 practice report. If Gibbs is limited or out this weekend, Craig Reynolds likely would be the primary beneficiary out of Detroit's backfield behind No. 1 option David Montgomery.
Oct 11, 2023
Should know more by Friday
Gibbs (hamstring) said Wednesday that he probably won't know until Friday if he is healthy enough to play Sunday in Tampa Bay, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs strained his hamstring in practice last Friday and ended up missing Detroit's blowout win over the Panthers on Sunday. He was then held out of practice Wednesday, though it sounds like he hopes to get back on the field in at least a limited capacity by the end of the week. If Gibbs doesn't end up playing, the Lions will have Craig Reynolds and possibly Zonovan Knight (shoulder) as RB options behind lead runner David Montgomery. Lions running backs coach Scottie Montgomery said Wednesday that Gibbs is "right where he should be" and is deriving extra motivation from the knowledge that his early impact hasn't met outside expectations.
Oct 11, 2023
Not at practice
Gibbs (hamstring) isn't practicing Wednesday, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
It's not much of a surprise given that Gibbs was added to the injury report last Friday, downgraded to 'doubtful' Saturday and then deemed inactive Sunday. After missing the easy win over Carolina, he appears in danger of sitting out another game when the Lions travel to Tampa this weekend.
Oct 8, 2023
Not playing in Week 5
Gibbs (hamstring) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs was a late addition to the Lions' Week 5 injury report Friday as limited due to a hamstring issue, which resulted in a questionable tag for the upcoming game day. After he was downgraded to doubtful Saturday, there was little wiggle room for him to be available Sunday, and that has come to pass. Detroit thus will lean on David Montgomery to lead its backfield, with Craig Reynolds and Zonovan Knight on hand for any remaining RB reps.
Oct 7, 2023
Downgraded to doubtful
Gibbs (hamstring) has been downgraded to doubtful ahead of Sunday's contest against the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
That Gibbs was added late to Friday's injury report was an unfortunately telling sign. It appears if the rookie is thus slated to miss the first game of his young career. David Montgomery figures to see the bulk of the workload in the event Gibbs is inevitably ruled out with Craig Reynolds and Zonovan Knight also chipping in.
Oct 6, 2023
Late addition to injury report
Gibbs was added to Detroit's injury report Friday and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Carolina.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs was a limited practice participant Friday after not being listed the previous two days. It's worrisome for fantasy managers, especially given that it's a hamstring injury and Gibbs relies on his speed to make an impact off the bench behind lead back David Montgomery. If the rookie ends up inactive ahead of a 1:00 ET kickoff, the Lions can turn to Craig Reynolds and/or Zonovan Knight behind Montgomery.
Sep 29, 2023
12 touches in Montgomery's return
Gibbs rushed eight times for 40 yards while securing four of five targets for 11 yards during Thursday's 34-20 win over the Packers.
ANALYSIS
After logging nearly 60 percent of the offensive snaps in Week 3, Gibbs dropped below 40 with the return of David Montgomery from a thigh bruise. The workload split may have been surprising simply given the questionable tag with which the latter entered the game, but the distribution of carries definitely was surprising after Montgomery handled 32 totes to Gibbs' eight. While Gibbs' did see three more targets in the passing game, the rookie had minimal involvement in the red zone while Montgomery racked up three touchdowns. This overall usage makes Gibbs most valuable in full PPR formats, but it is clear his value is capped across the board with Montgomery handling so much of the rushing volume. Up next is a Week 5 matchup at home against the Panthers.
Sep 28, 2023
Montgomery back for TNF
Gibbs is welcoming back Montgomery (thigh) to the Lions backfield for Thursday's game at Green Bay.
ANALYSIS
With Montgomery sidelined this past Sunday versus the Falcons, Gibbs handled 17 carries and caught one of two passes en route to 82 yards from scrimmage. Montgomery himself racked up 37 carries through a little more than six quarters prior to injuring his thigh Week 2. The breakdown of RB reps for Detroit on Thursday remains to be seen, but Gibbs could be the team's leader in rushes for a second consecutive contest if Montgomery has a cap on his reps.
Sep 24, 2023
New high in touches
Gibbs rushed 17 times for 80 yards in Sunday's 20-6 win over the Falcons. He also caught one of two targets for two yards.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs drew his first start with David Montgomery (thigh) sidelined and turned in his most productive performance yet. Although he made minimal impact as a pass catcher, Gibbs' output on the ground was helped by a long rush of 21 yards. Given his dynamic skill set, though, Gibbs likely still hasn't enjoyed his true breakout. With a quick turnaround ahead of Week 4's visit to Green Bay on Thursday night, Montgomery could remain sidelined or limited, which would help Gibbs' outlook as the lead tailback again.
Sep 24, 2023
Should get bulk of carries Sunday
Gibbs is expected to receive the majority of the snaps out of the backfield in Sunday's game against the Falcons, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The report doesn't come as a major surprise, given that the Lions' lead option on the ground through the team's first two games -- David Montgomery (thigh) -- is listed as doubtful and thus in line to miss the Week 3 contest. Gibbs has made slightly more noise in the passing game than on the ground thus far during his rookie season, recording nine catches for 57 yards on nine targets and carrying 14 times for 59 yards. While he should remain the Lions' top pass-catching back throughout his rookie season, Gibbs' profile in the ground attack should noticeable expand this week with Montgomery out of the mix. However, Pelissero notes that the Lions still plan to keep the other two healthy backs on the roster -- Craig Reynolds and Zonovan Knight -- involved, so Gibbs may not be handed a true workhorse role Sunday. Still, Gibbs looks like he'll have his best opportunity to date to produce for fantasy managers.
Sep 17, 2023
Leads team in receptions
Gibbs rushed seven times for 17 yards and caught seven of nine targets for 39 yards in Sunday's 37-31 overtime loss to the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs hardly got anything going on the ground, where he featured behind David Montgomery, who rushed 16 times for 67 yards and a touchdown. However, with Montgomery being carted off with a thigh injury during the second half, Gibbs could be in store for more carries going forward. The rookie also led the Lions in both catches and targets Sunday, showing versatility that could be on display more if Montgomery is limited or unavailable in Week 3 versus the Falcons.
Sep 13, 2023
Increased usage on tap
Gibbs could see an increased workload in Week 2 against Seattle, Benjamin Raven of MLive.com reports. "First game out of the gate, there again man, and we really didn't want to overload any of those [rookies] ... And now they've got that one under their belt, so for Gibbs, he'll begin to get more touches now," said head coach Dan Campbell.
ANALYSIS
David Montgomery got the starting nod in Week 1 against Kansas City and went on to nearly triple Gibbs in both offensive snaps and rushing attempts. However, Gibbs was much more efficient, averaging six yards per rush (versus 3.5 for Montgomery) while leading all running backs in forced missed tackles (six) despite handling a relatively small workload. While Gibbs usage rate only figures to improve as the season unfolds, Montgomery's presence could remain a problem for his fantasy production, especially as it relates to getting goal-line carries.
Sep 8, 2023
Logs only nine touches
Gibbs rushed seven times for 42 yards while securing both of his targets for 18 yards during Thursday's 21-20 win over Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
While this wasn't the volume fantasy managers wanted for Gibbs, the Lions coaching staff did publically warn us that the rookie may not see a full workload out of the gates. With that said, even with reduced expectations it was still a surprise to see Gibbs handle 14 less carries than David Montgomery, especially if Gibbs only saw two looks in the passing game and no carries near the goal line. While Gibbs should see more work as the season unfolds, the electric playmaker may need to rely on extreme efficiency to put up big stats in the meantime. Up next is a matchup against Seattle in Week 2.
Sep 6, 2023
May see reduced workload
Head coach Dan Campbell indicated that Gibbs may not see a full workload in the season opener Thursday against Kansas City, Michele Steele of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Campbell told reporters that the Lions want to be "smart" with Gibbs' usage in his debut with an eye toward the full, 17-game season. While any work taken off the rookie's plate likely means more action for David Montgomery, a lighter load doesn't necessarily preclude Gibbs from seeing enough high-value touches in the red zone and in the passing game to pay off in fantasy lineups. Not only has offensive coordinator Ben Johnson recently made headlines by saying that Detroit could utilize Gibbs in creative ways this year, but he followed that up by mentioning how "vertical threats don't have to be receivers, so that's one thing to watch out for with Gibbs." With Jameson Williams (suspension) out for the first six games of the year, it will be interesting to see how Gibbs fits into a passing game that currently has the likes of Marvin Jones, Josh Reynolds, and Kalif Raymond working as the top perimeter receivers.
Sep 2, 2023
To be deployed creatively
Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson said the Lions will use Gibbs in "some ways that people don't quite think we might,", Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The 12th overall pick figures to see a mix of carries and targets when the Lions face the Chiefs on Thursday, splitting backfield snaps with David Montgomery behind a veteran offensive line that's returning five starters. The Lions may run some plays with both backs on the field, and Gibbs could see targets out wide or in the slot from empty looks even when he's the only RB on the field. The workload split between Gibbs and Montgomery is probably the top fantasy storyline to monitor for the Thursday season opener in Kansas City.
Aug 19, 2023
Not expected to play Saturday
Gibbs is among the key players not expected to see action in Saturday's preseason game against the Jaguars, James Palmer of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The report suggests that the majority of the Lions' starters won't play Saturday in a game that will feature Teddy Bridgewater as the team's starting QB. In last Friday's preseason opener against the Giants, Gibbs carried six times for 19 yards and caught his only target for 18 yards while logging 18 snaps on offense.
Aug 12, 2023
Seven touches in NFL debut
Gibbs rushed six times for 19 yards and caught his only target for 18 yards in Friday's 21-16 preseason win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs was viewed as a reach when the Lions picked him 12th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, but at least Detroit should give the rookie out of Alabama plenty of touches to justify the selection. He figures to be a direct replacement for D'Andre Swift, whom the Lions traded away after drafting Gibbs. The shifty running back showed off his pass-catching skills on an 18-yard reception to move the chains on Detroit's third possession, but Gibbs will need to be more efficient on the ground moving forward to compete with David Montgomery for early-down work.
Aug 3, 2023
Part of two-headed monster
Coach Dan Campbell envisions a "two-headed monster" in the backfield with Gibbs and David Montgomery, ESPN.com's Eric Woodyard reports.
ANALYSIS
Campbell is merely confirming what was made obvious by Detroit's offseason moves. The Lions let Jamaal Williams walk and later traded D'Andre Swift, but only after signing Montgomery to a three-year, $18 million contract ($8.75 million guaranteed) and drafting Gibbs at No. 12 overall. While Montgomery is a capable pass catcher in his own right, Campbell said he views Gibbs as the guy who "carries the scalpel" and "can hurt you in the pass game." The Lions head coach also mentioned his previous experience on teams that utilized two running backs, including the Giants with Ron Dayne / Tiki Barber and the Saints with Mark Ingram / Alvin Kamara. The latter is a reasonable comparison for Montgomery/Gibbs, though presumably in an offense with less cumulative production up for grabs given that Jared Goff is no Drew Brees. Then again, Williams and Swift combined for over 2,000 scrimmage yards and 25 TDs last year, and that was with Swift missing three games and third-stringer Justin Jackson adding 281 total yards and

Participating in minicamp
Gibbs (ankle) is participating in the Lions' mandatory minicamp this week, Tim Twentyman of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Gibbs was bothered by a minor ankle injury during rookie minicamp, but he appears to have moved past the issue and is participating in full-team drills at mandatory minicamp. The rookie first-round pick figures to play a major role in Detroit's backfield this season and has already displayed a versatile skill set during offseason workouts. Gibbs and David Montgomery can be used interchangeably, but the former profiles as the quicker, dual-threat option.

Bothered by ankle at rookie camp
Gibbs suffered a minor ankle injury Friday and won't practice Saturday, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
It's only rookie minicamp at this point, with the first set of OTAs coming May 23-25. Gibbs should be a big part of Detroit's offense from the jump, after he and Bijan Robinson became the first RBs since 2018 to get drafted in the first half of the first round. The Lions traded D'Andre Swift to Philadelphia two days later, completing an offseason backfield makeover in which they swapped out Swift and Jamaal Williams (Saints) for Gibbs and David Montgomery. It's certainly an upgrade in terms of athleticism, with Gibbs offering 4.36 speed and double-threat college production (2,132 rushing yards and 1,212 receiving yards in three seasons) while Montgomery profiles as a younger and more versatile version of Williams.

Goes to Detroit 12th overall
The Lions selected Gibbs in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, 12th overall.
ANALYSIS
Backfield depth is nice, but with David Montgomery signed in free agency it's difficult to see how the Lions could make room for both Gibbs and D'Andre Swift in the remaining reps. Gibbs (5-foot-9, 199 pounds) is one of the most talented pass catchers the NFL is likely to see at the running back position, and with 4.36 speed the Alabama/Georgia Tech product is a threat to go the distance from any part of the field. In short, Gibbs is the kind of talent you make room for, and it's just about impossible to imagine the Lions leaving him on the bench very much. While his light frame makes Gibbs unlikely to log many 20-carry games, his pass-catching ability should make him a fantasy standout even on modest rushing volume.
