USFL Futures

USFL futures allow you to make season-long bets on your favorite football teams, or make predictions on who will win the Championship. These odds are calculated based on various things, such as recent team performance, or injuries. USFL odds are updated to reflect the outcome of every game.

USFL Futures Betting

From late August until early February, there is plenty of football to watch, root for and bet on, from both the National Football League (NFL) and NCAAF. Then, suddenly, the sport hits a drought, as fans and gamblers alike have a six-month wait for the next games that count.

But now, the USFL is back. After its inaugural season return in 2022, the professional football league’s football teams are ready to play the second spring season in 2023. And that means football betting sites will be taking action on USFL football futures.

There have been attempts to fill that long football-free space with spring football leagues. The most famous was the United States Football League, or USFL, which played from 1983 to 1986 before folding. Some of football’s biggest stars and household names, including Jim Kelly Steve Young, Jordan Ellis, Reggie White and Herschel Walker, played in the USFL or are currently associated with the USFL, such as Kirby Wilson.

For most of the next 35 years, however, the sports betting scene has not had any spring options for football fans and bettors. The World League of American Football, the Alliance of American Football, NFL Europe and two versions of the XFL all came and went quickly.

Reading USFL Championship Odds

A futures bet is a bet on something that will happen at a later date. In this case, it usually refers to something that will happen at the end of the USFL season, such as who will become the next USFL Champions.

The second-season USFL schedule will start in April 2023 and feature the same eight teams as last season. While all USFL games were played in Birmingham, Alabama last season, the league will expand and have games in between two and four different markets this year, with the goal of eventually having home games in the cities of all eight teams.

Futures are an ideal way to bet on the USFL. With very little history and with team rosters featuring little-known players who were NFL reserve players or training camp cuts, the individual games often have very unpredictable scores. So, instead of trying to predict game-by-game, a futures bet allows you to pick your favorite team to win the league title at the end of the season. In other words, you’re betting on the entire season, rather than one game.

The futures odds on the USFL Championship would list all eight teams, with a Moneyline total after each. The Moneyline can be positive or negative.

A positive Moneyline on a bet means that oddsmakers think it is relatively unlikely to happen. The number listed is the amount you would win if you risked a $100 bet.

For example, going into last season, the futures odds listed the following entry for the eventual champion Birmingham Stallions:

To Win Championship

  • Birmingham Stallions +700

That means that, before opening day, if you bet $100 on the Stallions to win the title, you would have earned $700 in profit.

A negative Moneyline on a bet means that oddsmakers believe it is very likely to happen. For example, Birmingham went on to win their first eight games and was 10-1 heading into the title game. The futures odds updated to reflect what had occurred throughout the season, and, in June, the odds entry looked like this:

To Win Championship

  • Birmingham Stallions -170

That meant you would have to risk $170 in order to have the chance to win $100.

USFL Playoff Format Explained

The USFL has eight teams, divided between two divisions.

The North Division has the:

  • Michigan Panthers
  • New Jersey Generals
  • Philadelphia Stars
  • Pittsburgh Maulers

The South Division features the:

  • Birmingham Stallions
  • Houston Gamblers
  • Memphis Showboats
  • New Orleans Breakers

The top two teams in each division advanced to the postseason, which consisted of three playoff games. The two North Division teams play each other in one semifinal game and the two South teams play in the other. The winners of those games advance to the championship game.

The playoff schedule hasn’t been announced for 2023, but it’s expected to be similar.

Betting On USFL Playoff Odds

As in other pro and college football leagues, there are a number of futures betting markets available for the USFL.

Obviously, one of the most popular futures is on the team that will win the championship. But some top online sportsbooks — including DraftKings Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook — also offer futures odds on winning the North and South Divisions and advancing to the championship game.

Some sportsbooks also offer player futures, such as who will win the league MVP (won by New Jersey’s receiver KaVontae Turpin in 2022) or the player of the game for the championship game (Birmingham’s Victor Bolden). Or you could bet on whether players will hit over/under milestones on their season total for rushing or passing yards. Obviously, player futures markets require extensive research as only the most knowledgeable betting analysts will know which players on each roster are expected to excel.

These are in addition to other commonly offered betting lines, such as Prop bets (Team Props and Player Props) and Game Totals which are often found on various sports betting sites.

USFL Championship Odds

For professional football leagues other than the NFL, rosters are often very flexible, as players would usually take a chance at making the NFL before choosing to compete in a league like the USFL. As a result, the USFL team rosters are not even close to being set for next season. The draft date hasn’t been set yet, and last year’s didn’t take place until April.

So the futures odds for the 2023 USFL Championship are not yet available at major online sportsbooks. As the roster picture becomes clearer for each team, the odds of who will reach the title game or win the championship game will begin to take shape. Look for that in April 2023.

Who’s the favorite to win the title?

As we said, plenty can change regarding the rosters of every team in the league. But for the time being, the best bet to win the USFL in 2023 is the team that won the inaugural Championship Game:

Birmingham Stallions

The Birmingham Stallions won their first eight games and finished first in the South Division at 9-1. They then beat the New Orleans Breakers, 31-17 in the semifinals and topped the Philadelphia Stars, 33-30, in the championship game to win the 2022 title. They stand the best chance to be the league leader, based on what we know at this point in the offseason.

Other Title Contenders:

Philadelphia Stars

The team that fell just short in the title game is also a good bet to compete for the 2023 championship. Philadelphia scored more points than any other USFL last season and will ride an explosive offense in 2023, as well.

New Jersey Generals

The North Division champions were upset by Philadelphia in the semifinals, but New Jersey finished 9-1, winning nine straight games after losing their opener.

New Orleans Breakers

The second-place team in the USFL South had the league’s best defense, giving up just 16.5 points per game.
