NFL Game Props

You can bet on the way a team will perform instead of if they’ll win with NFL prop bets. You can bet on things like how many receptions a team will gather, or how many total touchdowns will be scored. You can also bet on NFL player props, like which player will run for the most yards in a game.

Best NFL Prop Bets Today

It is no secret that NFL football is the most popular sport in the United States, by a large margin and a big reason why is the popularity of betting on NFL football teams and players. There are as many different ways to bet on the NFL as there are teams in the league. That includes the wide array of NFL prop bets that are available.

Prop betting used to be a novelty around the Super Bowl but has exploded in popularity throughout the NFL season. Essentially, a prop bet is anything other than a straight game bet on who wins or loses.

Online sportsbooks offer the opportunity to bet on point totals, the prevalence of certain plays and a wide variety of other team prop bets for a given game. There are also props for players, such as how many yards, catches, tackles or touchdowns they’ll produce or who will be the first touchdown scorer in the game.

Finally, there are long-term props on how individual players or teams will do throughout the season. We’ll go through the different types of props available and what you need to know to begin playing both the team and player prop markets.

What are NFL game props?

The prop betting market for the NFL is huge, with a dizzying number of options available at the top online sportsbooks. Prop bets are wagers on anything other than the actual outcome of the game. They allow you to get results throughout the game, instead of waiting until the end to see if your bet pays off. It also allows you to continue betting in a lopsided game, long after the outcome of the game itself is decided.

Props usually have odds listed as a moneyline, which means there is a positive or negative dollar amount listed.

For example, for Super Bowl LVIII, there is a prop of whether a safety will occur at any point of the game. The No has odds of -1600 at Caesars Sportsbooks.

The minus sign means that oddsmakers believe it is very likely that a safety won’t take place during Super Bowl LVIII. The amount of games in which a safety takes place is rather low, so the probability is that it won’t happen. As a result, bettors would have to risk more than they could potentially earn if they bet on a safety not taking place.

The negative moneyline tells how much you’d have to wager in order to win $100. So bettors would have to put down $1600 to have the chance to win $100 on No Safety.

A positive moneyline means that the event is not believed to be likely to happen.

For example, in that same betting market, the Yes has odds of +900. So you can win more than you risk on that bet. The moneyline says how much you’ll win on a $100 bet. A $100 bet on Henry a safety taking place during Super Bowl LVII would pay $900.

NFL Team Props

Team props allow you to bet on the performance of one (or both) teams in an NFL game. Some examples of team props include betting on which team scores first or last, what type of score (touchdown, field goal, other) the first (or last) score will be and which team will do better in various statistical categories.

You can bet on game totals (both teams’ performances added together) for points scored, passing yards, pass attempts and more or on an individual team’s performance in those categories.

Team props are listed in a moneyline format, with a negative moneyline indicating how much you’d have to risk to win $100 or a positive moneyline telling you how much a $100 bet would win you.

What Types of NFL Game Props Can I Wager On?

There are literally dozens of prop bets available for every NFL game. Here’s a look at some of the most popular types of bet options:

First to Do It

A popular category of prop bets is to try to predict which team will be the first to accomplish a task. The most common prop is which team will be the first team to score a touchdown. There’s also the first team to score (in any manner), first to call time out, first to be flagged for a penalty and first to throw a replay challenge flag available with this type of prop bet.

Some of these props require knowing the tendencies of teams and coaches, but there is always a great deal of luck involved as well. You can also bet on the first team to reach various scoring milestones (first to 10 points, 15 points, 20, 25 and so forth).

Last to Do It

There may be even more luck involved in this category of prop bets. You’re trying to predict which team will perform a given task for the last time in the game. For instance: The last to score a touchdown or the last team to score. You can also bet on the last team to do it in the first half.

Will this rare thing occur? You can also bet on whether uncommon plays will take place in the game. “Will there be a safety?” is a popular prop. So is “Will there be Overtime?” and “Will there be a shutout?”

You can also bet on “Will there be a special teams touchdown?” as well as more common events that will give you much lower odds than the above examples, like “Will there be an Interception?” or even “Will there be a touchdown?”

It is one of the most talked-about bets at the Super Bowl each year, but you can now bet on the outcome of the coin toss at most NFL regular season games as well — both the heads-tails outcome and which team will win the toss.

You can bet on whether a team’s (or the game’s) points total will be odd or even and on which team will have the longest field goal.

NFL Playoff Props

Prop betting became famous in the Super Bowl, a yearly ordeal when the world seems to stop to watch the NFL’s title game and as the regular season gives way to the playoffs, prop betting becomes more popular. When it comes to these betting lines, the stakes are higher, with teams trying to make it to the Big Game and with a loss ending their season.

There’s also more excitement as teams are more evenly matched than in the regular season, where a two-loss division winner may be playing a 12-loss team. There are also fewer games going on at any given time, so bettors’ attention isn’t split in as many different directions, allowing them to focus on the props in a given playoff game.

The Playoffs start with Wild Card Games. The top team in the AFC and the NFC each get a bye on Wild Card weekend and the other 12 teams play in six total games, usually spread over Saturday and Sunday.

The winners of those six games advance and join the two bye teams in the Divisional Playoffs, which is a total of four games over the next weekend. After that second weekend, the two remaining teams in each conference play in the AFC and NFC Championship Games to determine who will play in the Super Bowl.

Placing Professional Football Game Prop Bets – Where to do it?

If you want to place bets on your favorite team, you will need to know where to do it. You can find an NFL prop bet market at most establishments in areas where in-person gambling on the NFL is legal.

You can also wager at online sportsbooks, which offer prop bets as well as futures, player props, point spreads, moneylines and parlays from the preseason exhibition games up through the Super Bowl.

Some popular online sportsbooks include Caesars Sportsbooks, DraftKings Sportsbook, FanDuel Sportsbook and other online sports betting sites that offer proposition bets (including exotic prop bets and novelty props that deal with team or player statistics) in addition to other types of bets.

NFL Game Prop Betting Tips

In this section, we will be covering some of the most popular strategies to help you navigate NFL game prop betting effectively:

  • Understand the Game Inside Out: Knowledge is power. Understanding team strategies, weather conditions, historical performances, and player injuries can significantly influence game events. For example, windy or rainy weather can affect passing games and increase the likelihood of running plays or mistakes that could lead to safeties.
  • Focus on Trends & Statistics: Look for patterns in how often certain game props occur for teams involved. Some teams might have strong defenses that lead to more field goals, while others might be prone to high-scoring games which could affect overtime chances. Data is your friend here, so dive into the stats to find your edge.
  • Consider the Game Context: The importance of the game for each team can influence how it’s played. A team that needs to win to make the playoffs might take more risks, which could affect various game prop bets. Likewise, a team with nothing to lose might experiment more, leading to unexpected outcomes.
  • Compare Betting Lines & Prop Odds: Different sportsbooks may offer different betting odds on the same game props. Shopping around to find the best odds for your bet can increase your potential payout. It’s worth taking the time to compare a wide range of online sportsbooks before placing your bets.
  • Manage Your Bankroll Wisely: Prop betting, like all forms of betting, comes with risks. It’s crucial to manage your bankroll responsibly. This means only betting with what you can afford to lose and spreading your bets to manage risk. Avoid the temptation to chase losses with bigger bets.
  • Use Small Bets for High Variability Props: Some game props, like predicting a safety or a kick return for a touchdown, happen infrequently and are hard to predict. If you’re drawn to these high-payout props, consider placing smaller bets since the likelihood of winning is lower.
  • Stay Disciplined: It’s easy to get carried away with the variety of props available, but discipline is key. Stick to your research and betting strategy rather than making impulsive bets based on gut feelings.
  • Keep Up With News & Updates: Late-breaking news about weather changes, player injuries, or lineup adjustments can significantly impact game props. Staying informed right up to game time can give you an advantage.

By employing these strategies, you can approach NFL game prop betting with a more analytical and informed perspective, potentially increasing your chances of success. Remember, betting should always be done responsibly and as a form of entertainment.
