New York Liberty vs. Washington Mystics

Friday, May 30, 2025 – 07:30 PM EDT at CareFirst Arena

The Underdog Mystics

Washington is being heavily underdogged by oddsmakers for this game. As of this morning, the Mystics are posted at +7.5. On paper, this spread might seem to make sense. In reality, however, it doesn’t.

My argument here is that Washington is establishing itself as a team that plays up to its competition.

Washington’s Impressive Performances

The Mystics’ season-opening win against Atlanta has proven to be impressive. Atlanta is 4-2, establishing itself as a team vastly superior to what it was last season and as one of the better teams overall.

While the Mystics are easy to dismiss because of their not-so-impressive record, their performance against Las Vegas was extremely impressive.

Known as one of the top teams, Las Vegas hosted Washington on May 23 and won by only three points. Despite being on the road, the Mystics led by six points with just over a minute to go. They had the Aces in desperation mode. And while they failed to finish that game with a victory, they proved their worth as an underdog.

Takeaway

The Mystics were always going to be difficult for oddsmakers to evaluate correctly because they are relying heavily on rookies.

Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen, players whom the Mystics selected in the early first round in the most recent WNBA Draft, are proving to be the real deal. They are both top-three in points per game for the Mystics.

They are also big reasons why the Mystics are competing well against the top teams, making them a must-play as a heavy home underdog against a New York squad that just eked past Golden State at home.

WNBA Pick: Mystics +7.5 (-115) at Bet365

Connecticut Sun vs. Indiana Fever

Friday, May 30, 2025 – 07:30 PM EDT at Gainbridge Fieldhouse

Indiana’s Big Absence

The Fever must continue to play without star sharpshooter Caitlin Clark, who is sidelined with a left quadricep strain.

Objectively speaking, Clark’s absence must be expected to have a tremendous influence on Indiana’s overall outlook. A double-double machine, Clark leads her team in both points and assists. She averages 19 points and 9.2 assists per game.

Life Without Clark

Indiana’s last game, an 83-77 loss to the Mystics, is profoundly troubling because it shows the difficulty that Indiana has functioning without Clark.

The Fever are a team that, with Clark, likes to operate in transition. They want to push the pace and score points on the run. In their last game, though, they scored zero points in transition. They really missed Clark’s ability to ignite their transition offense. However, Clark is not only vital for their transition offense, but also for their half-court offense. She is famous for her three-point shooting prowess, which she displays with her long-range bombs.

As a sharpshooter with great range, she commands respect from the opposing defense, which has to account for her presence behind the arc.

Without someone to command that respect, the Fever spacing is insufficient, which makes them easier for opposing defenses to guard in the half-court. This problem with their half-court offense is obviously exacerbated by their lack of transition offense, because this lack creates more half-court-type games.

Without the star power that Clark provides, the offensively deficient Fever are worth fading. They will not score enough points to cover the spread as the favored team, especially when they are favored by so many points. Their opponent today, Connecticut, scored 87 points in its last game and is certainly capable of scoring more than enough points than it needs to stay comfortably within cover rage.

WNBA Pick: Sun +12.5 (-110) at Bet365

Los Angeles Sparks vs. Las Vegas Aces

Friday, May 30, 2025 – 10:00 PM EDT at Michelob ULTRA Arena

Las Vegas’ Huge Problem

The Aces are heavily favored for this game. As of Friday morning, the spread is up to ten points. I find this ridiculous. In order to cover such a large spread, the Aces will obviously need to limit their opponent to a sufficiently low point total.

However, the Aces are having a huge problem with their defense. Specifically, they are struggling to process and implement the defensive principles of their new assistant coach.

Their head coach said that they are thinking too much on the court. This means that they have yet to understand the new defensive concepts well enough for them to appear instinctual. We have to take advantage, as bettors, of this moment in time where they are still figuring things out.

We see this play out in the results: in their last game, the Aces gave up 102 points in a 20-point loss to Seattle.

It’s not like Seattle is some juggernaut on offense: the Storm rank eleventh in points per game. Seattle’s low offensive ranking along with its ability to amass over 100 points against the Aces invalidates any argument from Aces backers that tries to emphasize the offensive weakness of their opponent.

Revenge Game

Their opponent, Los Angeles, does not have a weak offense. Meanwhile, the Sparks go as far as their new point guard, Kelsey Plum, takes them. They are 2-0 in games where she scores 28 or more points.

Plum will get to face her old team tonight. Expect her to go crazy in this unique and exciting situation.

WNBA Pick: Sparks +10.5 (-110) at Bet365
