Kentucky Derby Best Bets 2026 Review: Superfecta Picks & Odds

Angel of Empire Kentucky Derby Horse Racing

It’s time for the Super Bowl of horse racing. The 2026 Kentucky Derby takes place this Saturday (post time: approx. 6:57 PM EDT) at venerable Churchill Downs in Louisville, marking the 152nd running of this sport’s signature race. The “Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” has set new betting records each of the last four years; that’s likely to continue in 2026, as audiences gather around these tentpole events while the smaller tracks close up shop.

Betting on the Kentucky Derby has changed, too. Unless you’re going there in person to “read the paddock” and try to find an edge, Computer Assisted Wagering (CAW) firms – including Velocity, which is owned by Churchill Downs – have sucked all the life out of the traditional Win-Place-Show bets. Now it’s all about Pick 4s, Pick 5s, “Derby City 6” jackpots (with their mandatory payouts) and superfectas if you’re looking for value.

Having said that, if you’re like most fans of horse racing, you want to bet on the Kentucky Derby at top-rated sportsbooks because it’s fun. And those exotic wagers just happen to be the most fun ones on the board. Let’s focus on the superfecta for now; if you also want to maximize your chances of taking home a monster payday – which can also be fun – here’s the battle plan for Saturday.

Kentucky Derby Superfecta: Take the Wheel

n case you’re new to thoroughbred racing, the superfecta is when you pick the first four horses to cross the finish line, in order. For example, last year’s winning Kentucky Derby superfecta was Sovereignty, Journalism, Baeza, and Final Gambit, turning a $1 ticket into a $1,682.27 payout.

Predicting the first four horses in order is very difficult, which is why the payout’s so big. You can boost your chances of winning by buying more tickets with different combinations of horses; sharp handicappers will use a “wheel” bet to focus on one or more key horses, so they appear more often in these combos.

There are many different approaches when it comes to wheel bets, but they basically fall into two categories: “full” wheel, where every horse in the field is included, and “partial” wheel, which is what it says on the tin. Looking at this year’s 20-horse Kentucky Derby field, we’re recommending a partial wheel for your superfecta where the first two spots are taken up by the following three horses (listed here with their post positions):

  • No. 18 Further Ado
  • No. 6 Commandment
  • No. 12 Chief Wallabee

Then we’ll rotate these four horses in and out of the last two spots:

  • No. 9 The Puma

  • No. 15 Emerging Market

  • No. 8 So Happy

  • No. 1 Renegade

Kentucky Derby Superfecta: The Horses

Aside from the betting structure itself and avoiding those nasty CAW bots, our recommended superfecta makes sense from a purely equine standpoint. The big thing to remember is that pre-race favorites like Renegade (+450 at Bovada as we go to press) haven’t won often enough to make a profit in the long run – but they can be good back-end additions to superfectas.

Instead of Renegade, we have the next three favorites holding up the front end. Brad Cox is the trainer for both Commandment (+500) and Further Ado (+550); Bill Mott is the man behind Chief Wallabee (+700). Both are proven winners on Derby Day, Cox with Mandaloun (2021, albeit via DQ) and Mott with Country House (2019, also by DQ) and Sovereignty last year.

We’re also showing some love here for Chad Brown, who will try to win his first Kentucky Derby with Emerging Market (+1600). Brown is a five-time Eclipse Award winner for Outstanding Trainer, and a beast at the Breeders’ Cup – plus he’s won the Preakness Stakes twice. Let’s see if he can get the job done for us this Saturday.
