Connecticut Huskies Win vs Northwestern Wildcats

The UConn vs Michigan picks for tonight’s NCAA Championship game hinge on one critical factor: tempo.
Michigan has the best overall group of players and a solid head coach, while UConn has the best overall head coach and a solid group of players. Dan Hurley will have the ideal game plan for his Huskies, positioning them to navigate a stylistically different Michigan squad.

For matchup-specific reasons, I will recommend UConn ATS and the “under” as my best bets tonight.

Why Are UConn vs Michigan Picks Trending Toward the Huskies?

The Best Plays The Best

I will not dispute the commonly held contention that Michigan has the best overall team, head coaches included. However, as paradoxical as it sounds, I deny that Michigan’s overall superiority entails that it will be the better team tonight.

Guided by their head coach, the Huskies reliably beat teams that are better than them. They are 4-1 against KenPom top-six teams. Their one loss came in a close, low-scoring 71-67 affair against an Arizona team that, like Michigan, prefers to play fast and reliably scores 80 or 90 points per game.

UConn nearly beat Arizona but still dictated the pace despite missing two starters, Tarris Reed Jr. and Braylon Mullins. As for the four wins, UConn beat Florida and Michigan State by four points each and Illinois twice by 13 and nine points, respectively. So, the Huskies become the best when they play the best.

A related trend is that, under Hurley, the Huskies are 11-0 in and past the Sweet 16. He has already guided them to two national championships in 2023 and 2024, respectively. During both of those tournament runs, UConn suffocated elite offenses, and now UConn is prepared to do so again with its eighth-most efficient defense.

UConn Huskies vs. Michigan Wolverines

Monday, April 6th at 8:50 PM ET

Michigan is the best overall team when the tempo is fast, and there are lots of possessions, which means that they want to run and that they depend on scoring a lot of points. If you look at all the games where the Wolverines scored 80 or more points, there are 29 of them.

They won 27 of them by ten or more points. Conversely, they played eight games where they failed to reach 75 points, and seven of them were decided by fewer than five points. In those lower-scoring games, they struggled against the likes of Penn State and Ohio State, as well as teams like TCU and Wisconsin that are likewise obviously worse than UConn.

Can UConn Control the Pace?

Clearly, therefore, the Huskies’ ability to dictate the pace in this game is critical – the Huskies want and need a low-scoring game. Bettors have been influenced by recent NCAAB odds favoring the Wolverines after their dominant win over Arizona, but UConn ranks 270 spots below Arizona in adjusted tempo, meaning this will be an entirely different game.

Teams that are far worse than UConn are able to slow down the tempo when they play Michigan. Iowa is a team that gets compared – by Michigan’s head coach, for example – with UConn because, like the Huskies, Iowa enjoys extending offensive possessions by moving players and the ball. The Wolverines barely scraped past Iowa by three points in what was a 65-possession game.

Michigan’s game against Duke saw even fewer possessions, 62, and a five-point Duke win. Michigan’s other losses came against a hot-shooting Wisconsin team that UConn can match with five players who convert over 35 percent of their three-point attempts and against Purdue in what was another low-possession game.

Key Tactical Edge: Defense and Adjustments

Both defenses are sufficiently well-prepared, as evident in their preexisting stylistic tendencies, to limit the opposing offense, which will help ensure a lower-scoring game.

UConn’s offense is predicated on constant motion and screening. When defenses don’t switch, then UConn’s guys can easily get open. But Michigan likes to switch. With its switching, Michigan has the antidote for UConn’s type of offense.

Reed Jr. does like to do a lot of iso bully ball down low, but that plainly won’t work while he’s defended by Michigan’s elite 7-3 rim protector Aday Mara, who ranks sixth in block rate.

How Will UConn Defend Michigan’s Playmakers?

As for the Huskies’ defense, they boast an elite on-ball defender in Silas Demary Jr. Led by his ball pressure, the Huskies will be aggressive along the perimeter, where they will make it harder for Michigan to get into its offense and develop a rhythm.

Michigan’s offense relies heavily on the distribution of its point guard Elliot Cadeau, who will have to deal with Demary Jr., who has several inches on Cadeau.

The pressure from UConn’s characteristic hard hedge when Cadeau relies on ball-screens, plus Demary Jr.’s length, will make it difficult for Cadeau to make the passes inside that he wants to.

UConn also has one of the highest-ranked perimeter defenses thanks to lengthy and versatile defenders like Jayden Ross and Jaylin Stewart. With them, UConn has the personnel to limit Michigan’s scoring depth and its MVP, the hobbling Yaxel Lendeborg.

Final Prediction and Best Bets

The importance of tempo entails a logical relationship between side and total. Tempo and trends justify a play on UConn in what will be a low-possession and hence low-scoring battle. Matchup details add justification for an “under” and the expectation that Michigan will fail to score enough points to cover.
