But we also have to talk about the new defensive coordinator, Daronte Jones, who comes over from the Vikings. This is a guy from Brian Flores’ staff, which is intriguing, since Flores is one of the best defensive coordinators in the NFL.
If Jones can bring over aspects he’s learned from Flores’ elite scheme, that could get more value out of this defense. We’ve seen general manager Adam Peters prioritize this side of the ball throughout the offseason, signing several free agents, including edge rusher Odafe Oweh, linebacker Leo Chenal, and several others. Then, the Commanders had stud linebacker Sonny Styles fall right into their laps at 7th overall.
In other words, there’s a legitimate chance that this unit is one of the most improved in the NFL. It’s a combination of potential improvement in coaching with several new additions. If the defense can improve, along with Daniels staying healthy, the Commanders could emerge as dark horses.
