Earns playoff-clinching win
Puk (7-5) earned the win Saturday against the Pirates, allowing one run on three hits over two innings while striking out three. He did not issue any walks.
ANALYSIS
Puk entered the game in the bottom of the fourth and struck out two of the first four batters he faced to get through the inning. However, the lefty reliever got himself into trouble in the fifth after surrendering a leadoff double to Ke'Bryan Hayes to open the frame, which would lead to one run coming across for the Pirates. Fortunately for Puk, the Marlins' offense would come through with two runs in the bottom of the inning, helping him secure his seventh win of the season as Miami clinched only its fourth playoff berth in franchise history. It marked only the second time this season in which Puk went for two innings and he's now allowed multiple hits in three of his last four appearances.

Collects first hold
Puk walked one and struck out two in a scoreless seventh inning Sunday to record his first hold of the season in a win over the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
The Marlins removed David Robertson from the closer role this weekend, just as they did with Puk about a month ago, but rather than turn back to the southpaw in the ninth, Tanner Scott got the save chance Sunday and converted it. Puk has regained his form, however -- over 10 appearances since his last blown save July 30, he's posted a 0.93 ERA, 0.52 WHIP and 16:1 K:BB through 9.2 innings. Should Scott falter down the stretch, Puk could get another chance to close for Miami before the season is done.

Locks down 16th save
Puk picked up the save in Friday's 6-5 victory over the Tigers. He allowed one run on two hits and zero walks while striking out three over one inning.
ANALYSIS
Puk allowed two hits and a run before ultimately earning his 16th save by striking out the side in the ninth. The left-hander had secured just one of his last four save chances and had given up nine runs over his last seven outings (6.1 innings), so while Friday's performance wasn't perfect, it was still a step in the right direction. Nonetheless, despite the bounce-back night, Puk will likely see fewer save chances moving forward, as Miami made a splash ahead of the trade deadline by acquiring veteran closer David Robertson from the Mets.
Jul 24, 2023
Blows another save
Puk blew the save in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Rockies. He allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out two over two-thirds of an inning.
ANALYSIS
Puk surrendered a game-tying solo homer to Randall Grichuk in the ninth inning, marking Puk's fifth blown save of 2023 and his third in his last four opportunities. Though manager Skip Schumaker said Friday that Puk would remain the Marlins' closer for the time being. Sunday's blown save could be enough for Schumaker to try out other options at closer. If that were to be the case, Tanner Scott would likely be the first in line for save opportunities considering his recent success and overall 2.81 ERA through 48 innings.
Jul 21, 2023
Remaining closer for now
Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said Friday that Puk will remain the team's closer for the time being, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk served up a walk-off home run in extra innings in his last appearance and has an 11.12 ERA so far in July. Meanwhile, Tanner Scott has been one of the best relievers in baseball for a while now. Schumaker is sticking with Puk in the ninth inning for now, though, with Scott being used in high-leverage spots earlier in games.
Jul 19, 2023
Serves up walk-off homer
Puk (4-4) was charged with the loss Tuesday against the Cardinals after he gave up three runs (two earned) on one hit and one walk over two-thirds of an inning.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old was called upon in the bottom of the 10th inning to maintain a 2-2 tie, but Nolan Arenado tagged him for a three-run homer to win it for St. Louis. It's the third time in Puk's past five outings that he's allowed multiple runs, including three long balls. The left-hander had a 2.08 ERA in his first 22 appearances with 10 saves in 11 chances during that stretch, but he's surrendered 11 runs with three losses and three blown saves in his last 10 appearances.
Jul 9, 2023
Nabs 15th save
Puk picked up the save in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Phillies. He allowed one hit while striking out one over a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
After recording back-to-back blown saves, Puk finally managed to put together a scoreless frame to secure his 15th save. Prior to the pair of missed opportunities, Puk had rattled off four straight scoreless appearances and given up just one hit over that stretch. Through 29.0 innings, Puk owns a 4.03 ERA and a 36:4 K:BB.
Jul 8, 2023
Blows save and takes loss Friday
Puk (4-3) blew the save and took the loss in Friday's 4-3 loss to the Phillies, allowing three runs on three hits over one inning. He struck out three and didn't record a walk.
ANALYSIS
Puk entered with a 3-1 lead in the top of the ninth and allowed a RBI double to Alec Bohm and a go-ahead, two-run shot to Cristian Pache before ending the frame. The left-hander has blown back-to-back saves and is now 14-for-18 in save chances this season. He sports a less-than-ideal 4.18 ERA across 29 appearances but has an elite 35:4 K:BB over 28 innings. Despite his recent struggles, Puk remains Miami's top closing option moving forward.
Jul 3, 2023
Picks up 14th save
Puk allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth inning Monday, striking out one batter and earning a save against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Puk coughed up a leadoff single but managed to close out the 5-4 victory. He's converted four straight save chances after coughing up three runs in a blown opportunity against the Pirates on June 23. Puk lowered his season ERA to 2.77 with 14 saves and a 29:4 K:BB.
Jun 30, 2023
Registers 13th save
Puk earned a save against the Red Sox on Thursday, striking out two batters in one perfect inning.
ANALYSIS
Puk was tasked with preserving a staff shutout with Miami holding a 2-0 lead heading into the both of the ninth inning. He had no trouble doing so, throwing 12 of 16 pitches for a strike and retiring the side in order. Since returning from a nearly month-long stint on the injured list June 7, Puk has gone 7-for-8 in save opportunities, allowing three earned runs over 10.1 innings while posting a 9:1 K:BB.
Jun 29, 2023
Nails down 12th save
Puk recorded the final two outs of Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Red Sox to collect his 12th save of the season.
ANALYSIS
Dylan Floro made things interesting in the ninth, giving up three straight singles with one out to put the potential tying run in the on-deck circle, but Puk needed only three pitches to squash the Boston rally by getting pinch-hitter Masataka Yoshida (forearm) to ground into a double play. Puk has given up earned runs in only one of 10 appearances since returning from the IL in early June, posting a 2.89 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 7:1 K:BB through 9.1 innings over that stretch while converting six of seven save chances. The 28-year-old southpaw remains entrenched as Miami's closer.
Jun 26, 2023
Perfect inning for 11th save
Puk picked up the save in Sunday's 2-0 victory over Pittsburgh. He pitched a perfect inning.
ANALYSIS
Puk capped off the Marlins shutout by retiring the side in the ninth to recover after giving up three runs in a blown save last time out. Despite missing about a month with an elbow injury, Puk has picked up 11 saves in 24 games played and boasts a strong 26:4 K:BB on the year.
Jun 24, 2023
Charged with blown save, loss
Puk (3-2) blew the save and took the loss in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Pirates. He gave up three runs on three hits without a walk or a strikeout over two-thirds of an inning.
ANALYSIS
Called upon in the ninth inning to protect a 1-0 lead, Puk allowed three singles and a couple stolen bases before getting the hook. Dylan Floro took over and allowed the inherited runner to score, adding a run to Puk's ledger. The lefty has pitched well overall this season (3.22 ERA, 1.16 WHIP) and had earned four of the Marlins' previous five saves coming into Friday. This outing alone is unlikely to affect his standing in the Miami bullpen.
Jun 22, 2023
Records save Thursday
Puk earned a save against the Pirates on Thursday, striking out one batter in a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
Puk was summoned in the ninth inning to protect a two-run lead. An error behind him brought the tying run to the plate for Pittsburgh with one out, but Puk retired the next two batters to close things out. The southpaw has successfully converted each of his past four save chances and hasn't allowed any earned runs over eight appearances while posting a 10:1 K:BB since his last blown save May 6. He's emerged as the clear-cut closer for a surprising Marlins squad that ranks third in the National League with 43 wins.
Jun 18, 2023
Notches ninth save
Puk walked one batter in a scoreless ninth inning Saturday to record his ninth save of the season in a 5-2 win over the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
The lefty has yet to allow an earned run since returning from the IL on June 7, and Saturday's walk was the first Puk had issued since May 4. His breakout 2022 with Oakland was clearly no fluke, and the 28-year-old now sports a 2.18 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 25:4 K:BB through 20.2 innings on the season while converting nine of 10 save chances.
Jun 17, 2023
Secures eighth save
Puk picked up the save Friday against the Nationals, allowing one hit over a scoreless inning. He struck out one and did not issue a walk.
ANALYSIS
Puk hasn't given up an earned run in his last seven appearances (6.2 innings), posting 10 strikeouts and three saves during that stretch. Overall, the left-hander is 8-for-9 in save chances and holds a 2.29 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 25:3 K:BB across 20 games (19.2 innings). He missed nearly a month on the injured list with an elbow issue, but he's been sharp since his return to MLB, allowing just one unearned run across five innings.
Jun 12, 2023
Snares seventh save
Puk picked up the save Sunday against the White Sox. He pitched a perfect inning.
ANALYSIS
Puk extended his scoreless inning streak to 4.2 frames (five appearances) while picking up his fourth perfect inning of the season to improve to seven-for-eight in save opportunities. Though he spent almost a month on the IL with an elbow injury, Puk hasn't shown any rust (0.00 ERA) and has reclaimed full closing duties from Dylan Floro.
Jun 8, 2023
Sharp in return from IL
Puk gave up a hit and struck out the side in a scoreless ninth inning during Wednesday's 6-1 win over the Royals.
ANALYSIS
The Marlins erased a save opportunity by scoring three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, but with Puk already warmed up, manager Skip Schumaker elected to stick with his closer for the top of the ninth. It was the southpaw's first appearance since coming off the injured list Tuesday, but it looks like he'll immediately bump Dylan Floro back to setup duty despite being sidelined for nearly a month. Puk sports a 2.87 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and impressive 22:3 K:BB through 15.2 innings on the season.
Jun 6, 2023
Activated from injured list
Miami activated Puk (elbow) from the 15-day injured list Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk will return to the Marlins' bullpen Tuesday night against the Royals after missing a little over three weeks due to a mid-May diagnosis of left elbow nerve irritation. He had been operating as Miami's primary closer prior to the IL stint and should eventually recapture a share of that role, though Dylan Floro probably remains worthy of rostering in most fantasy leagues as the situation unfolds.
May 31, 2023
Remains on rehab assignment
Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said Wednesday that Puk (elbow) will make back-to-back rehab appearances before being activated, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk tossed a scoreless inning on 15 pitches in his rehab debut Tuesday with Double-A Pensacola, but the Marlins want him to fully test his left elbow before they return him to a high-leverage bullpen role. Those back-to-back appearances could come Thursday and Friday, though the timeline is not certain. The 28-year-old southpaw has been on the shelf since May 14 because of elbow nerve irritation.
May 30, 2023
Heads out on rehab assignment
Puk (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Pensacola, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk could be back with a majority share of the Marlins' closer role by the weekend, assuming all goes well on the farm. He had posted a sharp 3.07 ERA and 19:3 K:BB through 14.2 innings this season with Miami before landing on the injured list May 14 due to left elbow nerve irritation.
May 26, 2023
Throwing 20-pitch bullpen Saturday
Puk (elbow) will throw a 20-pitch bullpen before Saturday's game against the Angels, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk continues to work his way back from nerve irritation in his left elbow. If things continues to progress well for the southpaw, he could be back as Miami's closer around the start of June, but he also may need a rehab assignment before he's ready to return to MLB action.
May 19, 2023
Throwing from 90 feet away
Puk (elbow) has upped his throwing distance to 90 feet in his rehabilitation, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
That's up from the 60 feet that Puk was reportedly throwing from Tuesday. The left-hander was placed on the 15-day injured list with left elbow nerve irritation, but the fact he's already resumed throwing from distance is a positive sign that Puk could be back as the Miami stopper before the end of May.
May 16, 2023
Plays catch Tuesday
Puk (elbow) played catch from 60 feet Tuesday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk landed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with irritation in his left elbow but is already back to throwing without any issues. He still has another two weeks or so before he can return from the IL, but it's a positive sign for the Marlins' closer.
May 14, 2023
Placed on IL with nerve irritation
Miami placed Puk on the 15-day injured list Sunday with left elbow nerve irritation, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk was reportedly dealing with dead arm and he's been unavailable to pitch since Wednesday against the Diamondbacks, and the Marlins will place their stopper on the injured list for the next couple of weeks while he recovers. With the southpaw unavailable, Dylan Floro and Tanner Scott will likely see the save opportunities for the Marlins. Assuming there are no setbacks, Puk could be ready to operate in the closer role around the start of June.
May 14, 2023
Dealing with dead arm
Manager Skip Schumaker said Puk is experiencing some dead arm and may not be available Sunday against the Reds, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander hasn't pitched since Wednesday in Arizona, when he picked up his sixth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning. The Marlins have a team off day Monday, so it wouldn't be surprising if Schumaker tries to say away from Puk during Sunday's series finale in an attempt to get him two extra days of rest. Tanner Scott and Dylan Floro are the likely options to step in for a save chance if Puk is unavailable.
May 11, 2023
Notches sixth save
Puk gave up a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his sixth save of the season in a 5-4 win over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw helped make history by locking down the victory, as the Marlins are now 12-0 in one-run games to begin the season -- the longest winning streak in games decided by one run in modern baseball history. Puk has been scored upon in only three of 15 appearances this season, and he's emerged as a solid closing option for Miami with a 3.07 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 19:3 K:BB through 14.2 innings.
May 6, 2023
Blows first save
Puk (3-1) blew his first save of the season and took the loss Saturday as the Marlins were downed 4-2 by the Cubs, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits over one-third of an inning. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw was victimized by bad luck and bad defense, as Yuli Gurriel committed an error to open the inning before Trey Mancini got credit for a double on a routine fly that Peyton Burdick lost in the sun. Puk has now been tagged for multiple runs in two straight appearances after reeling off a 10-inning scoreless streak, bumping his ERA on the season up to 3.46, but his 15:3 K:BB through 13 IP remains strong and he seems to be in little danger of losing his grip on the closer's role for Miami.
Apr 30, 2023
Grabs fifth save
Puk picked up the save in Sunday's 4-3 victory over the Cubs, tallying a strikeout in a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
Puk has now pitched 11 consecutive scoreless innings. He's allowed just one run this season, coming on Pete Alonso's homer on March 31. Puk is a perfect 5-for-5 in save chances with a 0.75 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 13:2 K:BB. He's firmly established himself as the full-time closer in Miami.
Apr 28, 2023
Earns second win
Puk (2-0) earned the win in Thursday's 5-4 win over Atlanta, striking out one in a clean inning.
ANALYSIS
The Marlins brought Puk in the eighth inning down 4-0, looking to keep their closer fresh as he hadn't pitched since Saturday. However, Puk would end up with the win as the Marlins rallied for five runs in the bottom half of the frame. The 28-year-old left-hander has been solid early in the season, allowing just one run in 10 innings while going 4-for-4 in save chances with a 0.80 WHIP and 10:2 K:BB. Puk seems to have solidified the closing role in Miami and should be a decent source of saves moving forward.
Apr 23, 2023
Collects fourth save
Puk walked one and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Saturday to record his fourth save of the season in the second game of a doubleheader sweep of the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
After the Marlins took the matinee 6-1. the nightcap proved to be a tighter affair, but Puk was able to preserve a 3-2 victory. Since being scored upon in his Miami debut, the southpaw reliever has reeled off seven straight appearances without allowing an earned run to lock down the closer role, and on the season Puk sports a 1.00 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 9:2 K:BB through nine innings.
Apr 19, 2023
Earns third save
Puk picked up the save Tuesday against the Giants. He allowed one hit while striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Puk worked around Wilmer Flores' leadoff single, striking out a pair, to secure his third save of the season and his second in as many days. The left-hander has pitched seven consecutive scoreless innings since allowing a run in his first outing of the season. Puk appears to have claimed the lead closing job in Miami, with Dylan Floro pitching the eighth Tuesday. The 27-year-old Puk is 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 8:1 K:BB through eight innings to start the year.
Apr 18, 2023
Secures second save
Puk recorded his second save of the season Monday, allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth inning in the win against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Puk entered the game in the ninth inning, protecting a slim 4-3 lead in the series opener with San Francisco. The 27-year-old started the inning by giving up a single to Joey Bart but quickly regained his composure and retired LaMonte Wade, Brandon Crawford and Thairo Estrada to secure his second save of the season. While Puk's performance is a positive sign for the Miami bullpen, he will likely continue sharing the closer role alongside Dylan Floro and Tanner Scott.
Apr 12, 2023
Notches extra-inning win
Puk (1-0) picked up the win in Wednesday's 3-2 extra-inning victory over the Phillies, giving up one hit and striking out two over two scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
After Dylan Floro worked a shutout eighth inning, Puk entered a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the ninth and needed only 23 pitches (18 strikes) to record his six outs. The southpaw has looked good to begin his Marlins tenure, posting a 3.60 ERA and 6:1 K:BB through his first four appearances and five innings with a win and a save, and while manager Skip Schumaker figures to play matchups to some extent in the late innings, Puk has been his top high-leverage option so far.
Mar 31, 2023
Collects first save of season
Puk recorded his first save of the season Friday, giving up a run on one hit and striking out two in the ninth inning of a 2-1 win over the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Called upon to protect a 2-0 lead, Puk served up a solo shot to Pete Alonso on a 95 mph fastball that caught too much of the plate, but he also whiffed Francisco Lindor and Mark Canha. Dylan Floro worked the eighth inning with the Mets' 8-9-1 hitters due up, and while it might be too early to draw any conclusions about new manager Skip Schumaker's tendencies, the fact that Puk was held back for the heart of New York's order is a strong sign he's viewed as the Marlins' top relief arm.
Mar 18, 2023
Dominant spring continues
Puk walked one and struck out three in a scoreless eighth inning during Friday's split-squad game against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw continued an outstanding spring that has seen him post a 7:1 K:BB through three scoreless innings. Puk figures to be one of the Marlins' top high-leverage relievers this season and in the mix for saves as new manager Skip Schumaker deploys a closer committee, but the fact that Dylan Floro worked ahead of him Friday in the sixth inning -- when St. Louis still had most of its starters in the lineup -- could be a sign the right-hander remains ahead of Puk in the pecking order.
Mar 13, 2023
Makes spring debut
Puk (groin) struck out two over a scoreless inning of relief in Friday's 7-2 win over the Nationals in Grapefruit League play.
ANALYSIS
Puk, whom the Marlins acquired in February in a deal that sent outfielder JJ Bleday to Oakland, made his spring debut over the weekend after he had been slowed by left adductor tightness in the early stages of camp. Prior to being dealt to Miami, Puk was expected to compete for a spot in Oakland's rotation, but the lefty's new organization appears to view him as a candidate for a high-leverage role out of the bullpen. The Marlins look set to enter Opening Day without a designated closer, so Puk could quickly enter the mix for saves if he can consistently turn in dominant outings like the one he turned in Friday.
Mar 7, 2023
Throws live batting practice
Puk (groin) threw a round of live batting practice Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Assuming there are no setbacks coming out of that workout, Puk will be on the rubber for his Grapefruit League debut Friday. He's been taking it slow over the last week or so due to left adductor tightness, but there are no serious concerns about his readiness for the beginning of the 2023 regular season. The southpaw figures to take on a share of the closer role this year in Miami, health permitting.
Mar 3, 2023
Throwing off mound Friday
Puk (groin) threw off a mound Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk has been held back a bit by left adductor tightness but has been able to take some steps forward in his recovery. The left-hander should be cleared for games soon if he can avoid setbacks. Acquired from the Athletics last month, Puk is expected to be in the mix for saves as part of Miami's closer-by-committee this season.
Feb 28, 2023
Battling mild adductor tightness
Puk has been battling slight adductor tightness in Marlins camp, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
But he is scheduled to play catch Tuesday and will aim to quickly put this issue in the rearview. Puk was acquired from the Athletics earlier this month and is expected to work in a high-leverage role out of Miami's bullpen in 2023. He could even see semi-regular save opportunities along with Dylan Floro, Tanner Scott and Matt Barnes.
Feb 23, 2023
Closing committee on tap
Marlins manager Skip Schumaker indicated Wednesday he doesn't plan on using a traditional closer and will instead play matchups with Puk and the team's other high-leverage options, Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald reports. "Our best guys are going to be against their best hitters," Schumaker said.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old southpaw had a breakout season in relief for Oakland last season, collecting 20 holds and four saves with a 27.0 percent strikeout rate, and it appears as though Puk will have a similar role in Miami. Holdovers Dylan Floro and Tanner Scott, as well as fellow offseason addition Matt Barnes, also figure to be in the mix for late-inning work, with Steven Okert (triceps) and JT Chargois potentially options as well. Given the sheer number of viable arms at the manager's disposal, there may not end up being one consistent save source on the Marlins this season, but plenty of fantasy value in formats that count holds as well.
Feb 16, 2023
Headed for high-leverage role
Puk will fill a late-inning role in the Marlins bullpen, Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw had been working on a splitter and cutter this offseason to supplement his 96 mph fastball and plus slider in anticipation of a move to the Oakland rotation, but the trade to Miami puts Puk back in the kind of high-leverage bullpen role he excelled in last season. "[The trade] creates a much deeper bullpen, with some guys with swing-and-miss stuff at the back that's going to give our manager some nice options," pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr. said Wednesday. "We're probably going to mix and match back there. They'll step up and define their roles as we go, but [we have] some guys that have experience back there and it's a much better feeling going into the spring with those guys that we have back there. Lots of options." Puk recorded 20 holds, four saves and four wins in 62 relief appearances for the A's in 2022 with a 3.12 ERA and 27.0 percent strikeout rate over 66.1 innings.
Feb 11, 2023
Heads to Miami in trade
Puk was traded to the Marlins in exchange for JJ Bleday on Saturday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk was expected to compete for a rotation spot with the Athletics this spring, but now will head to the Marlins to battle for that chance. The left-hander is not long removed from being considered among the top left-handed pitching prospects in baseball, but has battled injuries and worked exclusively in relief since he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2017. He was effective in that role in 2022 with a 3.12 ERA and 76:23 K:BB over 62 appearances and 66.1 innings of work for the A's. Puk also could battle for a high-leverage role for the Marlins in 2023, but fantasy managers should wait for some clarity before considering a draft selection on the southpaw.
Feb 8, 2023
Will be in rotation competition
Athletics general manager David Forst said last month that Puk will get another chance to start in 2023, per Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle.
ANALYSIS
Puk joins the long list of possible candidates for the final few spots in Oakland's season-opening rotation. He essentially shifted into full-time relief after undergoing Tommy John surgery back in 2017, but the 27-year-old former top prospect has stated a desire to take on a larger workload moving forward. "You are talking about a guy who was a starter for a long time in college and the minor leagues, so it's not like he's transitioning and has never done it," said Forst. "I think performance aside, we'll keep track of his health and how he feels getting back into that role."
Oct 5, 2022
Grabs fourth win Tuesday
Puk (4-3) got the win in an extra-inning victory over the Angels on Tuesday, firing a scoreless 10th inning during which he issued a walk.
ANALYSIS
Puk got his three outs on a quick eight pitches, intentionally walking Mike Trout with two outs and phantom runner David Fletcher on third base before getting Shohei Ohtani on an inning-ending flyout. The crisp work was then rewarded in the home half of the 10th inning when Shea Langeliers drew a game-winning bases-loaded walk, affording Puk his first win since Aug. 21. If this was Puk's final appearance of the season, it marks a fitting finish to a strong rebound campaign, one that saw the big southpaw thrive as a reliever while also recording 20 holds and four saves along with a 3.12 ERA and 1.15 WHIP across 62 appearances.
Sep 28, 2022
Saddled with third loss
Puk (3-3) took the loss against the Angels on Tuesday, allowing an earned run on one hit and a hit batsman over one inning. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Puk's outing got started off in positive fashion when he struck out Mike Ford with Taylor Ward on second base to finish out the seventh inning, but he worked himself into trouble in the eighth and failed to preserve a 3-3 tie in the process. The left-hander generated a pair of scoreless efforts to open September but has had a tough time since, pitching to an 0-2 record, 9.39 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 3.5 HR/9 across the 7.2 innings covering his subsequent seven appearances.
Sep 10, 2022
Takes second loss Friday
Puk (3-2) was charged with the loss against the White Sox on Friday, allowing five earned runs on four hits, a walk and a hit batsman over two-thirds of an inning.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was also charged with his fifth blown save of the season in what was a disastrous outing reminiscent of some of his troubles in past seasons. Tasked with closing out the White Sox while working with a 3-0 lead entering the ninth, Puk's frame started off encouragingly enough when he induced a Jose Abreu groundout, but an Eloy Jimenez solo home run, Andrew Vaughn RBI single and a run-scoring single and double by Gonzalez and Elvis Andrus, respectively, accounted for the game-tying and go-ahead runs for Chicago. Prior to Friday's collapse, Puk had been enjoying a stellar second half of the season that had seen forge a 1-0 record, four saves, six holds, a 2.60 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP across 17.1 innings over 11 appearances.
Aug 28, 2022
Clean inning for fourth save
Puk struck out two in a perfect inning to earn the save in Sunday's 4-1 win over the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Puk gave up two unearned runs in one inning versus the Yankees on Saturday, but he bounced back with a sharp effort Sunday. This was his fourth save of the season, all of which have come since July 22. He's had his ups and downs in August, but the southpaw has a clearer path to saves after Dany Jimenez (shoulder) was shut down for the season on Saturday. Zach Jackson will also be part of the closing committee, though save chances with the 48-81 Athletics could be tough to come by. Puk has a 2.53 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 60:16 K:BB while adding 17 holds, three blown saves and a 3-1 record through 53.1 innings this year.

Surrenders two unearned runs
Puk pitched one inning during Saturday's 3-2 win against the Yankees, allowing two unearned runs on two walks and a hit-by-pitch with one strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Puk was tabbed to pitch the top of the 10th of a scoreless tie and loaded the bases with one out following a fielder's choice, walk and HBP. A subsequent wild pitch let two runs in and put the 27-year-old lefty in line for the loss, though Oakland was able to rally in the bottom of the 10th and walk it off in the 11th. Puk has now surrendered two runs in two of his last three outings and possesses an even 5.00 ERA across seven August innings after taking on a larger role this month.
Aug 25, 2022
Earns third win Wednesday
Puk (3-1) earned the win in Wednesday's extra-inning win against the Marlins, firing a scoreless 10th inning in which he issued a walk and recorded two strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Puk preserved a 2-2 tie in the top half of the 10th with a solid 17-pitch inning, and he was rewarded for his efforts in the home half of the frame when Skye Bolt plated the winning run with a sacrifice fly. The big left-hander had last recorded a decision, also a win, back in the final game before the All-Star break July 17, but he'd also generated three saves and six holds over that span. Puk's scoreless effort Wednesday also represented a solid rebound after he was tagged for two runs over two-thirds of an inning by the Mariners in his prior appearance Sunday.
Aug 5, 2022
Tallies third save
Puk recorded the final out of Thursday's win against the Angels to earn the save.
ANALYSIS
Puk relieved Zach Jackson -- who allowed the tying run to reach base -- to earn his third save of the season. Puk has been used primarily as a setup man even after the departure of Lou Trivino and has been very effective in the role, turning in 12 consecutive appearances without allowing an earned run. For the season, Puk owns a 2.01 ERA and a 45:11 K:BB across 44.2 frames.
Jul 28, 2022
Picks up second save
Puk pitched a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout to earn his second save of the season in a 4-2 win over the Astros on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Not long after Puk tallied his first career save on July 22, he was called upon to close the door once again. Puk come through with a perfect ninth inning of work to lower his ERA to 2.13. Wednesday's appearance in a save situation might be the most important of the two, since Puk came in to start the ninth rather than to bail out a struggling Lou Trivino. It could be a sign that Puk is inching his way into Oakland's closer role. However, Trivino and Zack Johnson had each pitched in two consecutive games and might have been unavailable. The Athletics' bullpen roles are worth monitoring since the team is expected to be sellers at the upcoming trade deadline.
Jul 23, 2022
Notches first career save
Puk hit one batter but pitched a scoreless third of an inning to earn the save in a 5-4 win over the Rangers on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Manager Mark Kotsay had originally called upon Lou Trivino to close out the game with the Athletics leading 5-2 coming into the ninth. Trivino struggled immensely, giving up two earned runs on three hits and a walk, including a home run to Nathaniel Lowe to nearly blow the save. Puk came on in relief with runners on first and second and proceeded to hit a batter before inducing a hard groundout to third for the final out of the game with the bases loaded. It was Puk's first career save. Trivino's 6.83 ERA is unsuitable for a closer and Puk could be the man who steps in to replace him if there is a changing of the guard in Oakland's bullpen.
Jul 18, 2022
Gets second win
Puk (2-1) recorded the win over the Astros on Sunday, allowing one hit and recording a strikeout over a scoreless seventh inning.
ANALYSIS
The big left-hander was sharp, pounding 16 of his 21 pitches in for strikes while generating his fifth straight scoreless appearance. The streak comes in the immediate wake of Puk's roughest patch in what has been an impressive first half of the season overall, as he'd pitched to a 7.71 ERA across 4.2 innings over four outings between June 25 and July 2.
Jul 10, 2022
Grabs ninth hold Saturday
Puk recorded his ninth hold in a win over the Astros on Saturday, firing a scoreless sixth inning during which he hit a batter and recorded a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Puk worked around a plunking of Alex Bregman to produce his second straight scoreless appearance. The big southpaw endured a rough patch recently that saw him allow at least one run in four straight outings, but he's delivered for both the Athletics and fantasy managers this season with a nine holds and an impressive 2.57 ERA and 1.03 WHIP.
Jul 1, 2022
Bounces back Thursday
Puk allowed an unearned run on one hit while recording four strikeouts over 2.1 innings in a loss to the Mariners on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
The big left-hander had endured a bit of a rocky stretch over the previous four appearances, a span in which he'd allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks over 2.1 innings. However, Puk's first outing of at least two innings since May 12 likely served as a confidence booster, as he was exceedingly sharp while pounding in 28 of his 33 pitches for strikes.
Jun 28, 2022
Takes first loss Monday
Puk (1-1) was charged with the loss against the Yankees on Monday, allowing three runs (two earned) on one hit and a hit batsman over one-third of an inning.
ANALYSIS
Puk's rollercoaster of an appearance began when he plunked the first batter he faced, Anthony Rizzo, to load the bases. Giancarlo Stanton subsequently reached on a catcher's interference to plate DJ LeMahieu and Puk then conceded a two-run double to Josh Donaldson before exiting. The rocky outing was an extension of a rough patch for the left-hander, who's now given up at least one run in three of the last four appearances to raise his ERA and WHIP from 1.65 and 0.99 to 2.73 and 1.11, respectively.
Jun 23, 2022
Sloppy in blown save
Puk allowed two inherited runners to score on two walks and two wild pitches, taking a blown save in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
While the runs and the loss went on Zach Jackson's line, Puk was very clearly responsible. Both walks and wild pitches he gave up came with two outs, and the southpaw's struggles are highlighted by the fact he threw only seven of 17 pitches for strikes. Through nine outings in June, Puk has allowed three runs, seven hits, three hit batters and two walks in 8.2 innings. He still has a 1.91 ERA and 1.06 WHIP across 28.1 innings overall, but the shaky showing Thursday wasn't a great first audition for more save chances with Dany Jimenez (shoulder) on the injured list.
May 31, 2022
Scored on in second straight outing
Puk allowed an earned run on a solo home run over two-thirds of an inning in a loss to the Astros on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Facing the prodigious Yordan Alvarez in a same-handed matchup in the eighth inning, Puk conceded a 444-foot solo shot to right center that accounted for the final run of the afternoon. Puk still carries an excellent 1.37 ERA and 1.07 WHIP, but he's now notably given up an earned run apiece in each of his last two outings after going 12 straight appearances without being scored upon from April 14 to May 23.
May 21, 2022
Notches third hold Friday
Puk recorded his third hold in a win over the Angels on Friday, firing a perfect eighth inning during which he recorded two strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Puk served as a bridge to Dany Jimenez in the ninth with an efficient 13-pitch frame that saw him get nine offerings into the strike zone. The towering southpaw has left a mostly miserable 2021 in the dust, posting one victory and three holds alongside an 0.52 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and unblemished 0.0. HR/9 over 17.1 innings across 13 appearances.
May 13, 2022
Gets first win Thursday
Puk (1-0) was credited with the win in a victory over the Tigers on Thursday, allowing a hit and recording a strikeout over two scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
The big left-hander's ultra-successful run as a reliever continued in fine fashion Thursday, with Puk's pair of scoreless frames lowering his ERA to 0.60. After a disappointing 2021 at both the Triple-A and big-league levels, Puk appears to have found his groove in the bullpen thanks in no small part to greatly improved control that's underscored by his career-best 1.8 BB/9.
Apr 30, 2022
Cruising as reliever
Puk, who fired two scoreless innings during which he allowed a hit and recorded four strikeouts in a loss to the Guardians on Friday, now has an 0.96 ERA and 0.86 WHIP across his first six appearances.
ANALYSIS
The big left-hander may have found his home as a member of the bullpen for the time being, as he's allowed just on earned run across 9.1 innings while posting an 11:2 K:BB. Puk has logged four appearances of more than one inning -- including three of two frames apiece -- and he's encouragingly displayed much better control than during two prior big-league stints where he's posted 4.0 and 4.1 BB/9s.
Apr 20, 2022
Reinstated from COVID-19 IL
Puk (undisclosed) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk was moved to the COVID-19 injured list Monday after he was on the restricted list for the Athletics' weekend series in Toronto. However, he'll rejoin the bullpen ahead of Wednesday's game against the Orioles. In his first three appearances of the season, the southpaw has allowed a run on three hits and a walk while striking out five in four innings.
Apr 18, 2022
Shifts to COVID-19 IL
Puk (undisclosed) was transferred to the COVID-19 injured list Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk was placed on the restricted list for the series in Toronto this past weekend, potentially because he's unvaccinated and couldn't travel to Canada, and he'll now move to the COVID-19 IL. It's unclear if the 27-year-old tested positive for the virus, but he'll remain away from the team for the time being.
Apr 15, 2022
Lands on restricted list
Puk (undisclosed) was placed on the restricted list ahead of Friday's series opener at Toronto, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Teams can use the restricted list for players who are unvaccinated and unable to travel to Canada, and it appears Puk falls into that category. Zach Logue and Ryan Castellani have been added to the big-league roster for bullpen depth for this weekend.
Apr 12, 2022
Solid multi-inning effort
Puk allowed an earned run on two hits over two innings in a win over the Rays on Monday. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander had logged a scoreless inning Saturday against the Phillies in his season debut, and although he yielded an RBI single to Ji-Man Choi in the eighth inning, he was solid overall during his 37-pitch outing. Following a difficult 12-appearance stint in 2021 and a similarly rough Cactus League experience this spring, Puk has encouragingly fashioned a 3.00 ERA and 5:1 K:BB across three frames in his first pair of regular-season outings.
Apr 10, 2022
Scoreless frame in season debut
Puk fired a scoreless seventh inning in a loss to the Phillies on Saturday, allowing a walk and recording two strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Puk threw 20 pitches during his one frame, so he labored a bit while getting just 11 of 20 pitches into the strike zone. However, the left-hander escaped unscathed, certainly a welcome start to his season after a spring in which he produced a 6.52 ERA across six appearances. Puk will likely continue to draw mostly low-leverage assignments until and unless he can prove trustworthy over an extended period.
Apr 6, 2022
Starting season in bullpen
Puk will open the season as one of three left-handers in the Athletics' bullpen, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
There'd been some talk from manager Mark Kotsay about Puk possibly being back in play for a rotation spot in the immediate wake of Sean Manaea's trade to the Padres. However, with Matt Brash having secured the No. 5 role in the rotation, Puk is back to opening the 2022 campaign in the bullpen, where he'll look to start putting an uneven spring that saw him generate a 6.52 ERA across 9.2 innings over six appearances behind him.
Apr 4, 2022
Rotation spot may be back in play
Puk was mentioned by manager Mark Kotsay as still being a candidate for the starting rotation in the wake of Sean Manaea's trade to the Padres on Sunday, Scott Bordow of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk seemed destined to start the season in the bullpen prior to Sunday, but with Oakland's projected No. 2 starter now off the roster, it seems the big left-hander will at least be given some consideration to benefit from the domino effect of the move. However, Puk, who's posted a 7.27 ERA over 8.2 innings across five appearances this spring, will have plenty of competition, considering Paul Blackburn and Adam Oller are also in the mix for back-end spots and James Kaprielian (shoulder) could also be ready to return before the end of April, Gallegos separately reports.
Mar 31, 2022
Bound for bullpen
The Athletics plan to have Puk open the season as a member of their bullpen, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Durability concerns have been the main reason why Puk has yet to make an MLB start, but after reporting to spring training healthy, he was expected to compete for a back-end spot in the Oakland rotation. At some point during the spring, the Athletics scrapped those plans, as all four of Puk's appearances to date have come as a reliever. He's tossed exactly two frames in each of his last three Cactus League appearances, a usage pattern that could signal that the Athletics envision him serving as a multi-inning fireman out of the bullpen. Though that role likely wouldn't put Puk in the mix for consistent save chances, he could have some fantasy value in deeper leagues as a ratio stabilizer if he can find a way to keep his walks in check. He hasn't shown the ability to do that so far in spring training, as he's issued six free passes over 6.2 innings.
Mar 27, 2022
Struggles again Saturday
Puk allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks across two innings in a Cactus League loss to the Guardians on Saturday. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
The big left-hander is being given an opportunity to secure a rotation spot on the rebuilding Athletics, but he was the fourth pitcher in Saturday. Puk has now sandwiched a pair of concerning outings -- he also gave up two earned runs on two hits in just two-thirds of an inning in his Cactus League debut against the Angels on March 18 -- around the scoreless pair of frames he threw versus the Royals on Tuesday. If he's unable to demonstrate appreciably better form in whatever opportunities he has remaining prior to the regular season, Puk appears destined to start the season in the bullpen or back in Triple-A Las Vegas.
Mar 14, 2022
Stretching out to start
Puk will be stretched out this spring and given a shot to win a rotation spot, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk's undeniable talent earned him the sixth-overall selection in the 2016 draft, but injuries have so far prevented him from living up to expectations. The 26-year-old lefty has only thrown 24.2 major-league innings, all of which have come in relief, and his 4.74 ERA isn't particularly good. It looked as though his clearest path to fantasy relevance may have been through fully committing to the bullpen and eventually pushing for the closer job, but it now appears as though he could have a chance at a starting role. The Athletics will likely need as much rotation help as they can get, as they've already traded Chris Bassitt to the Mets and could potentially deal Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea as well.
Sep 8, 2021
Sent down Wednesday
Puk was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Puk was charged with two losses since the beginning of September, and he gave up five runs in 1.1 innings across three appearances since then. He'll attempt to get back on track with the minor-league club, while right-hander Miguel Romero was recalled to take his place in the bullpen.
Sep 8, 2021
Woeful in relief Tuesday
Puk (0-3) was tagged with the loss in relief Tuesday against the White Sox after allowing three runs on five hits across one-third of an inning, striking out one.
ANALYSIS
Puk entered the game in the fifth inning but struggled, facilitating a three-run deficit the A's weren't able to overcome. Puk has now given up multiple runs while pitching less than a full inning in two of his last three appearances, underscoring why he now sports a bloated 6.08 ERA across 13.1 innings (12 appearances) this year.
Sep 7, 2021
Still inconsistent in majors
Puk has allowed four earned runs on 10 hits over the 4.2 innings covering his last five relief appearances.
ANALYSIS
The big left-hander continues to find consistency elusive in his latest big-league stint, as he's given up two earned runs in two of the appearances in the aforementioned sample while generating scoreless one-inning outings in the three others. Puk does continue to pitch to plenty of contact even when escaping innings unscathed, however, as he's given up 10 hits over the 4.2 innings in the span. As such, he's likely to continue operating in low-leverage scenarios, especially with the Athletics in the midst of a postseason push.
Aug 23, 2021
Takes first season loss
Puk (0-1) allowed two earned runs on one hit and one walk while striking out one across one inning, taking the loss to the Giants on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Puk entered the eighth inning with a one run lead and lost it on a two-run home run by Donovan Solano. He has spent most of the season in Triple-A Las Vegas and has pitched just 8.1 innings with the Athletics this season. However, in six appearances this was his first time giving up any runs.
Aug 11, 2021
Perfect frame in majors return
Puk, recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas earlier in the day, fired a perfect sixth inning in an extra-inning win over Cleveland on Tuesday, recording two strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander displayed some encouraging control, firing eight of 11 pitches for strikes. Puk was effective with the Aviators in the weeks before his promotion, pitching to a 1.64 ERA over his last 22 innings, and the hope naturally is he'll be able to carry over that success down the stretch after posting a 5-2 record and 3.18 ERA during his initial big-league stint back in 2019.
Aug 10, 2021
Joining big-league bullpen
The Athletics recalled Puk from Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday, Melissa Lockard of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
At least for this season, Puk has been working as a reliever between stops in Oakland and Las Vegas, with the organization presumably keen on limiting his innings after a slew of arm-related injuries in recent years. Though Puk is blessed with a fastball that sits around 96-to-98 miles per hour and pairs it with a sharp slider, he's largely been unable to translate his skills into useful results at Triple-A this season (6.08 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, 48:13 K:BB in 40 innings). However, after a rough patch in late June, Puk has seemingly settled down at Las Vegas, delivering a 1.64 ERA and 24:4 K:BB across his last 13 appearances spanning 22 innings. Expect him to work in a multi-inning role in middle relief while he's up with Oakland.
Jul 15, 2021
Seems to be settling down
Puk hasn't allowed an earned run and has posted an 11:3 K:BB over the 10.1 innings covering his last six appearances with Triple-A Las Vegas,
ANALYSIS
The one asterisk attached to that sample is noteworthy -- Puk actually yielded five runs July 3 against Sacramento, but none were earned. His other five appearances during that span have been completely scoreless, and with just a trio of free passes, the big left-hander at least seems to have gotten a temporary grip on his control problems. However, given he still carries a 7.31 ERA and 1.85 WHIP across 28.1 innings with the Aviators, it appears likely the A's will need to see a more extended stretch of effective pitching before considering a promotion.
Jun 24, 2021
Scuffling in Triple-A
Puk has pitched to a 1-2 record, 10.38 ERA and 1.92 WHIP across the 13 innings covering his eight appearances with Triple-A Las Vegas since being optioned May 28.
ANALYSIS
Puk opened the season at the major-league level but made just one 3.1-inning appearance before suffering a biceps injury that kept him on the shelf for nearly two months. The big left-hander has given up multiple earned runs in six consecutive appearances with the Aviators, and he's forged a massive 5.5 BB/9 and 4.2 HR/9 over his current stint in Las Vegas. With control such an obviously prevalent issue for Puk at the moment, it appears he has virtually no path for a promotion back to the Athletics at any point in the foreseeable future.
May 28, 2021
Activated and optioned
Puk (biceps) was activated off the injured list and optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Puk made just a single relief appearance this season before hitting the injured list in early April with a strained left biceps. He's made five rehab appearances for Las Vegas but hasn't been close to convincing, allowing eight runs in five innings of work while giving up three homers. He'll continue to try to sort himself out as a regular member of Las Vegas' roster for now, but his upside remains high if he can stay healthy and rediscover his stuff.
May 26, 2021
Second straight rough rehab outing
Puk (biceps) allowed four earned runs on four hits over 1.1 innings while also recording four strikeouts in Triple-A Las Vegas' loss to Salt Lake on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Puk allowed a two-run home run to Brennon Lund in the sixth inning and then put a pair of runners to lead off the seventh frame that eventually came around to score after the left-hander had exited. Puk has now allowed seven runs over two innings covering his last two rehab appearances, although his four strikeouts Tuesday were a bright spot. It appears likely Puk will make at least one more appearance for the Aviators in an attempt to have him return to the majors with some momentum.
May 24, 2021
Tuesday rehab appearance planned
Puk (biceps) is scheduled to make another rehab appearance for Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday, Athletics manager Bob Melvin confirmed to Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM Monday.
ANALYSIS
There was a possibility the Athletics had seen enough from Puk over four appearances with the Aviators to deem him ready for activation, but after the left-hander gave up some hard contact in a rough outing Saturday versus Salt Lake, it appears the team wants to see if he can bounce back. Puk hasn't worked more than a single frame in any of his outings with Las Vegas, although he did throw 20 pitches in just two-thirds of an inning Saturday due to his struggles.
May 23, 2021
Hit hard in latest rehab
Puk (biceps) allowed three earned runs on four hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning in a rehab appearance for Triple-A Las Vegas against Salt Lake on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander gave up some hard contact to a couple of hitters with major-league experience in Luis Rengifo and Jo Adell, who tagged him for a double and a solo home run, respectively. Saturday's outing represented a test of sorts for Puk, as it came on the shortest amount of rest yet (two days) during his four-appearance rehab assignment. It remains to be seen if Puk's poor final line will play any role in the Athletics' decision on when to activate him, as he'd already put together three previous solid appearances for the Aviators.
May 21, 2021
Flawless rehab effort
Puk (biceps) fired a perfect inning in Triple-A Las Vegas' win over Salt Lake on Thursday, recording one strikeout.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander's third rehab outing saw him get three outs on just nine pitches. Puk has produced scoreless efforts in two of his three appearances for the Aviators and could be deemed ready for activation at some point over the weekend.
May 19, 2021
Another rehab appearance scheduled
Puk (biceps) will pitch an inning for Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Athletics don't appear to be building Puk up for longer relief appearances, as his third rehab outing Thursday will be the same, one-inning length as the previous two. It's unclear whether Puk will require more rehab after Thursday or if he'll be ready for activation to the big-league roster.
May 15, 2021
Takes loss in rehab appearance
Puk (biceps) was charged with the loss in Triple-A Las Vegas' defeat at the hands of Reno on Friday, allowing an earned run on one hit over one inning while also recording a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Puk threw 10 of 17 pitches for strikes in what was his second rehab outing for the Aviators. The big left-hander is likely slated for at least a couple more appearances before activation is considered, with a potential bump in workload on tap forthcoming after Puk logged an inning apiece in each of his first two trips to the mound for Las Vegas.
May 12, 2021
Requires multiple rehab outings
Pitching coach Scott Emerson said Puk (biceps) began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday and will need "a couple more outings" before returning from the injured list, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old threw 20 pitches and recorded three strikeouts over a scoreless frame in his first rehab appearance Tuesday with the Aviators. Puk landed on the injured list after covering 3.1 innings during his season debut April 5, and he could return sometime next week if all goes well on the rehab stint.
May 10, 2021
Rehab assignment in tap
Puk (biceps) faced live hitters Saturday in Las Vegas and could begin a rehab assignment sometime during the coming week, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk's recovery has been on an upward trajectory of late, with the big left-hander having thrown a bullpen session and facing live hitters on multiple occasions over the past several days. The rehab assignment would be the natural next step for Puk, who's been sidelined since April 8 after making just one regular-season appearance.
May 4, 2021
Solid workload coming Tuesday
Puk (biceps) is slated to throw 30 pitches over two simulated innings in the bullpen Tuesday, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The recovering southpaw threw a bullpen session Saturday that he apparently got through without setbacks, so he'll ramp up the volume Tuesday. Puk's current tenure on the injured list dates all the way back to April 7, so he may still need at least a couple of other throwing session of some kind, if not a rehab appearance or two, before he's deemed ready for activation.
May 1, 2021
Throws bullpen Saturday
Puk (biceps) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk has been on the injured list since April 8, and the team will evaluate the southpaw Sunday to see how he responds to his most recent throwing session. The left-hander has made encouraging progress in his recovery so far, but it's not yet clear when he could return to game action.
Apr 24, 2021
Return to throwing imminent
Puk (biceps) is slated to resume throwing before the end of the weekend, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander has been shut down from throwing for the last few days and has yet to start mound work since going on the injured list April 8. However, he had worked up to throwing from 90 feet off flat ground before his recent brief period of inactivity, so it remains to be seen exactly what Puk's expected restart of physical activity will look like.
Apr 20, 2021
Still no mound work
Puk (biceps) has yet to resume throwing off a mound, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. "He's feeling some lingering stuff going on there," manager Bob Melvin said Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The A's won't ramp up Puk's throwing program until he is symptom free, so he should be considered out indefinitely. Given his lengthy list of arm injuries since returning from Tommy John surgery, it seems unlikely that Oakland will ramp Puk up to a true starter's workload this season, even once he is fully healthy.
Apr 17, 2021
Not yet throwing off mound
Puk (biceps) hasn't yet thrown off a mound, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk started throwing from 90 feet recently, but he still doesn't have a timetable for his return since he hasn't gotten back on the mound. Manager Bob Melvin said Saturday that the team should have a better idea of Puk's return timetable once he throws a bullpen session. The left-hander has been sidelined since April 7 due to a left biceps strain.
Apr 15, 2021
Throwing from 90 feet
Puk (biceps) recently threw from 90 feet, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk's recent throwing session marked just the second time that he had thrown since he was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left biceps strain April 7. Manager Bob Melvin said Thursday that Puk still doesn't have a timetable for his return, but it's encouraging to see the southpaw resume throwing.
Apr 10, 2021
Will miss more than minimum time
Puk (biceps) will be out longer than the 10 days required by his placement on the injured list, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
It's still not clear how long Puk will be sidelined, but he has not yet resumed throwing, and manager Bob Melvin revealed he will miss more than 10 days of action.
Apr 8, 2021
Placed on injured list
Puk was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a strained left biceps, retroactive to April 7.
ANALYSIS
Puk had a strong performance in his first relief appearance of the season Monday, as he allowed one hit and three walks while striking out four in 3.1 innings. However, he apparently sustained an injury and will miss time as a result. It's not yet clear when Puk will be able to return to game action, but right-hander Deolis Guerra's contract was selected by Oakland in a corresponding move.
Apr 6, 2021
Stellar in long relief
Puk, recalled from the alternate training sit earlier Monday, fired 3.1 scoreless innings during which he allowed a hit, three walks and a wild pitch while recording four strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Starter Frankie Montas was chased after 2.2 innings, leaving manager Bob Melvin in a potential hole after Athletics relievers had already worked 16.2 frames through the first four games. Enter Puk, whose stretched-out arm came in extremely handy as he notched nine outs on 65 pitches. While the left-hander wasn't anywhere near his sharpest, his ability to handle multiple innings enabled him to serve as a bridge to the seventh in another blowout defeat for Oakland.
Apr 5, 2021
Promoted to majors
Puk was recalled from Oakland's alternate training site Monday.
ANALYSIS
Puk was unable to crack the Opening Day roster, but he'll get his chance in the majors early in the 2021 campaign. He finished with a 3.18 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with a 13:5 K:BB across 11.1 innings a season ago. Puk will take the roster spot of Chad Pinder (knee), who was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday.

Won't break camp in big leagues
Puk was optioned to the Athletics' alternate training site Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Puk appeared to have a chance to break camp in the starting rotation due to Mike Fiers' hip injury, but both he and Daulton Jefferies were sent to the alternate site. That seemingly leaves Cole Irvin as the fifth starter to begin the year. Puk appeared to be also in contention for a bullpen role, but he hasn't won that job, either. It seems as though the Athletics will be carefully managing his innings this season.
Mar 29, 2021
Dazzles in Saturday's start
Puk fired four scoreless, one-hit innings in a Cactus League win over the Rangers on Saturday, recording three strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
After struggling enough with his command Monday against the Diamondbacks that manager Bob Melvin expressed concern afterwards, Puk came up big in his final chance to audition for the Athletics' open rotation spot. Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports Puk worked up to 41 efficient pitches over his four frames, while all three of his strikeouts were of the swinging variety despite his fastball still averaging no more than 94 mph. The reduced velocity may be an ongoing concern, but Puk expressed confidence Saturday in his ability to handle whatever role he opens the season in with his existing repertoire.
Mar 22, 2021
Struggles with command
Manager Bob Melvin said that Puk's struggles with command concerned him during Monday's outing, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk's velocity has been down during spring training, topping out at 92-93 mph in his last outing. However, Melvin was less concerned about the speed of Puk's pitches and more alarmed by his inability to hit his spots. Puk worked 1.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits and two walks. With Mike Fiers (hip) unlikely to be ready for Opening Day, Puk is a candidate for the rotation to start the season, though Cole Irvin has made a strong case for the role.
Mar 18, 2021
Satisfied despite velocity drop
Puk, who made his Cactus League debut in a win over the Royals on Wednesday, came away satisifed with his two-inning outing despite ihis velocity topping out at 92-93 mph, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. "I'm just getting back into it," Puk said. "Maybe I'll get the velocity fully back. Maybe not. I'm more concerned about just going out there and feeling good, which I am. My shoulder is feeling strong and healthy."
ANALYSIS
The big left-hander allowed two earned runs on a two-run home run and also surrendered another hit and a walk over two innings. However, Puk also recorded four strikeouts -- three of them on swinging third strikes -- while utilizing his two-seam fastball, slider and curveball. Manager Bob Melvin echoed his pitcher by putting the the low 90s velocity in perspective and noted Puk's 6-foot-7 frame makes his power pitch intimidating even at reduced speed because how close to the plate he is by the end of his delivery.
Mar 16, 2021
Wednesday start confirmed
Puk will start Wednesday's Cactus League game against the Royals and is expected to throw 45-50 pitches, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
This confirms a Monday report that indicated matters were trending in this direction for Puk, whose velocity and breaking ball had both stood out in a Saturday sim game. The urgency to get the big left-hander stretched out has gone up a notch, considering he's the leading candidate to take Mike Fiers' (hip) place in the starting rotation to open the season if the latter is sidelined as expected.
Mar 15, 2021
Spring debut possible Wednesday
Puk, who Martin Gallegos of MLB.com relayed Sunday could be a top candidate to open the season as the No. 5 starter, is likely to make his Cactus League debut Wednesday, Gallegos separately reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk threw 30 pitches in a simulated game Saturday and reportedly impressed with his velocity and a sharp breaking ball, and he's now in the midst of a three-day rest period. That lines him up for a potential spring debut against the Royals on Wednesday, an outing in which he'd begin the ramp-up process to potentially serve in some form of an opener or conventional starter capacity early in the season if Mike Fiers (hip) is sidelined.
Mar 15, 2021
Could get rotation look
Manager Bob Melvin suggested Sunday that Puk will be the top candidate to begin the season as the Athletics' fifth starter if Mike Fiers (hip) is placed on the injured list, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Fiers having yet to pitch in a game this spring and now expected to be shut down for a few days after receiving an injection to address inflammation in his hip, his chances of being ready for Opening Day are growing increasingly dimmer. Puk would at least present the Athletics with a high-upside replacement, so long as he can get enough innings under his belt this spring for Melvin to feel comfortable deploying him in a starting role. If Puk's workload is still a concern for coming out of spring training, the Athletics could choose to deploy him as more of an opener or primary pitcher when Fiers' turn in the rotation is due. Daulton Jefferies and Cole Irvin are other candidates to step in as a fifth starter if Oakland prefers to keep Puk in the bullpen.
Mar 9, 2021
Sim games scheduled
Puk will throw in simulated games Tuesday and Saturday and should get into Cactus League action soon after that, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The Athletics are treating Puk with extreme caution, a sensible plan given that injuries have limited him to just 36.2 innings over the last three years combined. Shoulder issues wiped out the entirety of his 2020 campaign. He's expected to open the year in the bullpen as the team looks to manage his workload.
Mar 7, 2021
Strong throwing session Friday
Puk threw an inning to hitters Friday, his first time doing so this spring, Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com reports. "He was free and easy and throwing the ball good," Athletics manager Bob Melvin said.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander is being treated with plenty of caution after shoulder surgery, but he's now proceeded from bullpen sessions to facing live hitters without a hitch. Puk could throw another live batting practice or two before eventually transitioning to Cactus League game appearances.
Mar 5, 2021
Facing hitters Friday
Puk will face hitters at the Athletics' complex Friday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
There are no questions about Puk's talent, but injury issues remain a massive concern for the 2016 sixth-overall pick. He's thrown a combined 116.2 innings over the last three years, including none last season as he battled shoulder issues. He's building up very cautiously this season and is expected to open the year in the bullpen.
Feb 26, 2021
Could face hitters in coming days
Puk could face hitters in live batting practice "pretty soon" according to manager Bob Melvin, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The big lefty has already looked good in his early bullpen sessions as he rounds back into shape following another injury-marred season in 2020. Melvin's proclamation supports the notion Puk hasn't suffered any setbacks with his activity level thus far, and it therefore appears likely the team will test him by elevating him to live hitters soon.
Feb 18, 2021
Strong first throwing session
Puk put on an impressive showing during his first throwing session of camp Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. "He looked great. I think surgery really did a lot for him," manager Bob Melvin said. "There were times last year that you'd watch him and you could tell he was kind of feeling a little something and guarding his shoulder. That was not the case today at all. The ball had a lot of life, and he looked really good."
ANALYSIS
The glowing report from Melvin is obviously music to the ears of many holding Puk in keeper and dynasty formats, a practice that's often proven frustrating over the last couple of seasons due to the left-hander's assortment of injuries. Puk was slated for a rotation spot last season before shoulder issues derailed those plans, but the Athletics are planning to build him up as a starter in spring training with an eye on deploying him in some sort of multi-inning capacity to open the season. Whether that immediately equates to a rotation spot remains to be seen, however, as there is also the option of having Puk initially operate in a long-relief role that he performed well in back during his first taste of big-league action in 2019. "We're still kind of figuring out what we're going to do with A.J.," Melvin said. "Whether or not we use him out of the bullpen or in a starting role, we're not sure yet. But you can't have enough depth as far as the starters go, and if someone like A.J. isn't ready to start, then
Feb 16, 2021
Likely to start season in bullpen
Puk, who underwent surgery in mid-September, is expected to start the season out of the bullpen in order to manage his workload, Shayna Rubin of The Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
This news contradicts early December reports that Puk projected to break camp as a member of the starting rotation, and there could conceivably be a change of plans yet again before spring training concludes. However, given the towering southpaw has already underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018 and has subsequently dealt with frequent shoulder issues, it certainly would be understandable if the organization erred on the side of caution. Puk didn't need any repairs during his surgical procedure and was already projected to be ready for spring training since shortly after the operation, so he should be able to give manager Bob Melvin and his staff plenty of opportunity for evaluation over coming weeks.
Dec 10, 2020
Projected for A's rotation
Puk (shoulder) is progressing well from surgery and projects to break camp in Oakland's rotation, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He will be the Oakland's fifth starter if he stays healthy while getting stretched out this spring. Granted, the A's have been overly optimistic with their public comments about Puk's health and availability in the past, only for things to go south, so we should not take it for granted that he will be healthy this spring and into the regular season. There hasn't been much clarity regarding the nature of the shoulder procedure he underwent in September. Even in a best-case scenario, the 25-year-old lefty won't log close to a full season in the MLB rotation, as he has thrown a total of 36.2 innings since needing Tommy John surgery in 2018.
Sep 18, 2020
Should be ready for spring training
Puk (shoulder) didn't need any repairs during his recent surgery and is expected to be ready for spring training, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk was shut down from throwing earlier in September and underwent surgery to aid in his recovery. However, he's expected to be ready by spring training in 2021 since the procedure was a debridement and cleanout of his shoulder.
Sep 14, 2020
Moved to 45-day injured list
Puk (shoulder) was shifted to the 45-day injured list Monday, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The move is purely a procedural one, as Puk has already been ruled out for the year for shoulder surgery, a procedure he's expected to undergo sometime this week. It remains to be seen whether or not recovery from the surgery will cost him a portion of the 2021 season as well. The transaction clears space for Oakland to add Jake Lamb to the roster.
Sep 11, 2020
Needs shoulder surgery
Puk will undergo shoulder surgery next week, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Shoulder issues first popped up for Puk in early March, and it's been something of a saga since then. He appeared to be on the mend before being shut down in late July, but he'd been making more encouraging progress since then. He was shut down a second time earlier this week, however, and will end up losing the remainder of the season. Depending on the exact nature of the surgery, it's possible he misses a meaningful portion of the 2021 campaign as well. It's been a brutal stretch for the young lefty, who missed all of 2018 and much of 2019 due to Tommy John surgery. He'll enter 2021 having thrown just 36.2 total innings over the last three seasons.
Sep 10, 2020
Could begin throwing this weekend
Puk (shoulder) could begin throwing again this weekend, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
He was scheduled to see noted surgeon Dr. Neil ElAttrache again after getting shut down for the second time earlier this week. Puk is highly unlikely to be built up and ready to return to game action during the regular season, but Slusser notes the southpaw could potentially return for the postseason, although even that seems like a long shot.
Sep 7, 2020
Shut down again
Puk's shoulder issues are bothering him again, as he didn't throw as scheduled Sunday and has been shut down again, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk hasn't been officially ruled out for the season, though a setback so close to the end of the regular season certainly seems to hint that way. Puk has been dealing with shoulder woes since spring training, though he's been close to being cleared twice, both during summer camp and as recently as last week. He appeared to be nearly ready to rejoin his teammates in a relief role after pitching in an intrasquad game Friday, but he now looks to be at risk of missing the entire season.
Sep 4, 2020
Set to throw again
Puk (shoulder) will throw again Sunday, John Hickey of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk threw a live batting practice session Friday and was expected to rejoin the team afterward. However, the Athletics added another throwing session to his agenda, so he won't be able to rejoin the major-league roster until next week. Once he returns, the southpaw will work out of the bullpen to finish the season.
Aug 29, 2020
Another throwing session on tap
Athletics manager Bob Melvin confirmed that Puk (shoulder) will throw again Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk has steadily been ramping up his throwing program over the last month and Monday's session could serve as his final tuneup before an official return to the 28-man roster. A further update on Puk's situation should be provided following the completion of his Monday outing.
Aug 22, 2020
Throwing to hitters Monday
Puk (shoulder) is scheduled to throw to hitters Monday and will do so again at least one more time before rejoining the A's bullpen, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk just threw a bullpen session Friday and was to be evaluated if he was ready to face live hitting or not based on how he felt. Apparently the session went according to plan as the former 2016 first-round pick will throw live at-bats Monday and then at least once more down the road before an official call-up to the 28-man active roster.
Aug 20, 2020
Friday bullpen scheduled
Puk (shoulder) will be evaluated for his readiness to face live hitters after Friday's bullpen session, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk has been on a steady throwing program that has seen him progressively build up his workload at the Athletics' alternate training site in San Jose. If the left-hander's bullpen session goes well Friday, Puk could take the next step toward eventual activation by getting back in front of live hitters again next week.
Aug 19, 2020
More bullpens before live hitters
Puk (shoulder) will likely need a handful of more bullpen sessions before being deemed ready to face live hitters, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw had a solid 30-pitch bullpen session at the Athletics' alternate training site in San Jose on Monday and is scheduled to throw another Wednesday. Puk may still need at least one more bullpen before he tests himself against some of the hitters at the site as he continues on a path that has a targeted early-September activation date from the injured list.
Aug 18, 2020
Productive bullpen session Monday
Puk (shoulder) threw all four of his pitches during a 30-pitch bullpen session at the Athletics' alternate training site in San Jose on Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk was able to deploy his fastball, curveball, changeup and slider without issues during the session, and he'll now take two days off before repeating the process Thursday. The big southpaw is slated to work out of the bullpen upon his eventual activation, and the steady, setback-free progress he's made thus far in his rehabilitation seems to have him on track for an early September activation at the moment.
Aug 15, 2020
Tosses bullpen Saturday
Puk (shoulder) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session Saturday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk has been increasing his throwing distance since being placed on the injured list with a shoulder strain. He's scheduled to throw a 30-pitch bullpen Monday as well. While the southpaw still doesn't have a timetable to return, manager Bob Melvin was optimistic that he'd be able to come back at some point during the abbreviated 2020 season.
Aug 10, 2020
Ups throwing distance again
Puk (shoulder) is now playing catch from up to 90 feet at the Athletics' alternate training site in San Jose, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander continues to make steady progress, as he was maxing out at 75 feet a few days ago. However, despite the encouraging report Sunday, manager Bob Melvin noted that it's still "going to be a while before he [Puk] gets on the mound."
Aug 5, 2020
Nearing mound work
Puk (shoulder) is throwing from 75 feet, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk, who has been sidelined all season with a shoulder strain, is reportedly close to resuming mound work. While this is encouraging news, the left-hander still has a ways to go in his recovery. If Puk is able to return this season, it will likely be in a relief role.
Aug 1, 2020
Encouraging progress in San Jose
Puk (shoulder) is progressing well through a throwing program at the Athletics' alternate training site in San Jose, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. "He feels good, so that's encouraging," manager Bob Melvin said. "I still have no timetable for him for when he gets on the mound or throws a bullpen."
ANALYSIS
The promising left-hander has reportedly been playing catch out to a distance of 60 feet. Puk landed on the 10-day injured list back on July 22 (retroactive to July 20), but he'll definitely be sidelined for a considerable amount of time beyond that based on the current pace of his rehabilitation.
Jul 24, 2020
Resumes throwing
Puk (shoulder) will play catch Friday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk's shoulder issues returned earlier in the week, leading to him being placed on the injured list with a shoulder strain Monday. He underwent a cortisone injection and is already ready to throw again, which is certainly a good sign for his eventual return to action. He's expected to miss at least two weeks, with Daniel Mengden filling his rotation spot for now.
Jul 21, 2020
Receives cortisone injection
Puk (shoulder) will be sidelined at least two weeks after receiving a cortisone injection, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old landed on the injured list Monday with a left shoulder strain, which appears to be a resurfacing of the issues he dealt with in the spring. Puk could face a longer recovery timeline, but for now he's unlikely to see the mound until mid-August. Daniel Mengden will step into the A's starting rotation to begin the season.
Jul 20, 2020
Shoulder issues resurface
Puk was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday with a shoulder strain, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk dealt with shoulder issues in the spring but appeared to be free of limitations during the start of summer camp. However, the injury apparently resurfaced, and he'll be examined in the coming days. With the southpaw now set to miss the start of the regular season, Daniel Mengden (elbow) will take his spot in the rotation. It's unclear how long Puk will be sidelined as a result of the injury.
Jul 3, 2020
Plan for unrestricted use endures
With the 2020 season now officially set at 60 games, Puk should be free of any workload restrictions during the significantly abbreviated slate, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
As a pitcher entering his first full major-league season, Puk, who's previously topped out at 125 innings in his professional career, was slated to have his workload capped at some point in the latter portion of a 162-game campaign. With a season of that duration now out of the equation, Puk is scheduled to be utilized without any true restrictions beyond any early-season precautions the Athletics may opt to take with him during his first couple of turns. The towering southpaw's current conditioning will be evaluated first-hand by Oakland's coaching staff when the team's summer camp begins Saturday.
May 15, 2020
Should be free of limitations
Puk (shoulder) should be ready to take his projected spot in the starting rotation if the 2020 regular season begins in early July as planned, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The towering southpaw has been one of the various injured players around MLB to benefit from the extended suspension of play, as his early-March shoulder strain has had plenty of time to clear up in ensuing weeks. Additionally, Slusser notes Puk could well be free of any innings limit he would have likely been subject to as a rookie in a regular season of normal duration. Puk was already back to throwing from 120 feet as of early April, and he'll presumably have an additional opportunity to tune up in any continuation of spring training that occurs leading up to a proposed early-July Opening Day.
Apr 6, 2020
On upswing
Puk has been long tossing from 120 feet and says his shoulder feels the best it has in awhile, Susan Sulsser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk is one of the most likely beneficiaries of the delayed start to the season, as he appears to be recovering from a shoulder flare-up. "Coming back from Tommy John, a lot of people always seem to talk about how your shoulder kind of flares up and you've just got to work through it. I think I was at that stage," Puk said. A theoretical shortened, compressed season could cause added stress on big-league rotations, so Puk seems likely to get starts if he remains on this trajectory.
Mar 21, 2020
Chance to open season in rotation
Puk (shoulder) could have an opportunity to start the 2020 campaign in the starting rotation due to the significantly delayed start to the regular season, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The towering left-hander appeared destined to start the regular season in the bullpen just over a week ago, but two subsequent postponements of the start of the regular season have exponentially increased his chances of opening the 2020 campaign as a starter. That had been the plan for Puk coming into spring training, and the No. 4 spot in the rotation seemingly awaits him if he's able to utilize the extra time now at his disposal to completely overcome the shoulder strain he's been dealing with.
Mar 13, 2020
Plays catch Wednesday
Puk (shoulder) was able to play catch Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The towering southpaw continues to progress from his shoulder strain, and he should be able to carry out the throwing program team trainers developed for him despite the cancellation of the remainder of spring training Thursday due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Puk was already likely to miss the remainder of Cactus League play and slated to start the season in the bullpen; however, with Opening Day now delayed by at least two weeks past its original March 26 date, it remains to be seen if the 24-year-old will have a chance of stretching out sufficiently through catch sessions and potential sim games he might be able to participate in if teams are allowed use of their facilities.
Mar 9, 2020
Could throw Tuesday
Puk is expected to resume throwing as early as Tuesday, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk said Monday that his brief shutdown stems from some discomfort in his shoulder during a bullpen session last week. Tests revealed no structural damage, but the delay is expected to take him out of contention for the Athletics' Opening Day rotation. It remains to be seen if he'll finish building up to a starter's workload in the minors or if he'll pitch out of the bullpen to open the season.
Mar 7, 2020
Unlikely to open in rotation
Puk's strained shoulder likely takes him out of contention for an Opening Day rotation spot, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
The news follows naturally from the fact that Puk has no timetable to resume throwing, but manager Bob Melvin confirmed Saturday that "it's probably a stretch" for Puk to be ready to start right away. Whether that means he'd open the year in the bullpen or the minors remains to be seen. The Athletics' plan for him to start the year probably won't become clear until he starts throwing again.
Mar 7, 2020
No timetable to resume throwing
Puk (shoulder) needs more strength work before he resumes throwing, Matt Kawahara of The San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
He was cleared of structural damage in his sore shoulder, but manager Bob Melvin says there is no set date for Puk to resume throwing. With this in mind, it seems likely that Puk will open the year on the injured list, possibly embarking on a minor-league rehab assignment before returning to big-league action.
Mar 5, 2020
Cleared of structural damage
Dr. Neal ElAttrache confirmed Puk has nothing structurally wrong with his shoulder, Alex Coffey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
This is good news for Puk, who was shut down from throwing earlier in the week due to a mild left shoulder strain. It sounds like he'll pick things back up after a few days of strengthening exercises. Puk's status for the start of the season will likely depend on how his shoulder responds once he resumes his throwing program. That said, given his injury history and relative youth, it wouldn't be surprising if the Athletics brought him along conservatively.
Mar 5, 2020
Getting shoulder checked out
Puk (shoulder) will meet with Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Thursday in what manager Bob Melvin labeled as a prescheduled visit, Alex Coffey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Dr. ElAttrache, who previously performed Puk's Tommy John surgery back in April 2018, is seemingly just verifying that the lefty is progressing as anticipated after he was diagnosed with a mild shoulder strain coming out of his most recent Cactus League appearance. Assuming Puk's checkup reveals nothing concerning, he could resume playing catch within the next few days. Puk still has some hope of being ready to go for Opening Day, but given his injury history and relative youth, it wouldn't be surprising if the Athletics acted conservatively with him and placed him on the injured list to begin the season.
Mar 3, 2020
Dealing with mild shoulder strain
Puk was diagnosed with a mild left shoulder strain Tuesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old will be shut down from throwing until being reevaluated Thursday or Friday. Puk already underwent an MRI which revealed no structural issues, but it's nonetheless a discouraging spring-training development for the young left-hander. Puk's availability for Opening Day will be in limbo until he receives an official timetable for his return to the mound.
Feb 23, 2020
Strong showing in spring opener
Puk, who fired a scoreless first inning during which he issued a walk and recorded a strikeout in Saturday's 12-2 Cactus League loss to the Cubs, impressed with his full repertoire of pitches, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. "The changeup that he didn't have last year, that's what is going to make him who he is," manager Bob Melvin said. "His fastball even plays up because of it. He looked really good."
ANALYSIS
The towering left-hander threw 13 pitches overall during the outing, nine of which found the strike zone. His most memorable moment came when he mowed down Kris Bryant on three pitches, flummoxing the Cubs slugger with an 87 mph slider after blowing a pair of fastballs clocked in the mid-90s past him. Outside of a two-out walk to Javier Baez, Puk was pleased with his outing and the fact he's now free to utilize his curveball and changeup after limiting his use of breaking pitches last season to reduce strain on his surgically repaired elbow.
Feb 18, 2020
Gets nod to start spring opener
Puk will start the Athletics' Cactus League opener Saturday against the Cubs, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk made a midseason return from Tommy John surgery in 2019 before closing out the year in Oakland's bullpen, finishing the season with a 3.18 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 13 strikeouts across 11.1 innings. The 24-year-old southpaw will be attempting to earn a role in the Athletics' rotation this spring, competing with Chris Bassitt and Jesus Luzardo. Puk received high praise from his catcher Austin Allen following a live batting practice session to hitters Tuesday at Fitch Park in Arizona. "He looked really good, his fastball was there, he was throwing strikes with everything," Allen said. The former first-round pick by Oakland in the 2016 draft will look to utilize his 6-foot-7 frame and full arsenal of pitches to keep hitters off-balance and impress his coaches throughout spring training.
Feb 18, 2020
To use full arsenal this season
Puk, who is opening spring training without restrictions, will utilize all four of his pitches this season as a starter, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The towering left-hander was effective as a reliever in his first taste of big-league action last season, posting a 2-0 record and 3.18 ERA across 10 appearances while only deploying his fastball and slider. Puk felt some elbow soreness in his rehab from Tommy John surgery last summer when using the changeup, so he laid off the pitch when coming out of the bullpen for the Athletics. However, as the projected No. 5 starter for this coming season, Puk will reincorporate both his changeup and curve ball, giving him a full arsenal that pitching coach Scott Emerson feels will give hitters "a completely different dynamic" when facing the promising southpaw.
Feb 12, 2020
Doesn't have specific innings limit
Puk is not currently on any specific innings limit, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Puk returned to game action in mid-June last season after recovering from Tommy John surgery. The lack of a specific innings cap certainly doesn't mean the Athletics will let him push towards 200 frames this season, as he finished with just 36.2 innings last year. Expect Oakland to manage the 24-year-old's workload carefully, though it sounds as if they'll be playing things by ear for now with regards to just how much he'll be allowed to throw.
Jan 25, 2020
Enters year as starter
Puk will be a starter for the A's this season, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
This shouldn't come as a surprise. Puk was eased back as a reliever in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, but he has a chance to be a really good starting pitcher, so Oakland will continue to develop him in that role. Manager Bob Melvin said the team might have to get creative with managing Puk and Jesus Luzardo's workloads, but there does not seem to be significant risk of either being used primarily out of the bullpen.
