Out against left-hander
Thomas is not in the lineup Tuesday for Game 7 of the NLCS against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Southpaw Ranger Suarez is taking the ball for the Phils, so the left-handed hitting Thomas will take a seat. There's a good chance Thomas will enter the game eventually once Philadelphia goes to its bullpen. Corbin Carroll will shift over to center field while Tommy Pham handles right.
Oct 20, 2023
Sitting for Game 4
Thomas isn't in the Diamondbacks' lineup for Game 4 of the NLCS against Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
With left-hander Cristopher Sanchez set to start on the mound for the Phillies, the lefty-hitting Thomas will retreat to the bench for the beginning of Friday's contest. Lourdes Gurriel, Corbin Carroll and Tommy Pham will start across the outfield while Thomas sits.
Oct 19, 2023
Out of lineup for Game 3
Thomas is not in the lineup for Game 3 of the NLCS on Thursday versus the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Lourdes Gurriel, Corbin Carroll and Tommy Pham will start across the outfield as the Diamondbacks take on left-hander Ranger Suarez. Thomas slashed just .143/.175/.260 in 81 plate appearances against lefties during the regular season and has gone 0-for-5 with an RBI sac fly through the first two games of the National League Championship Series.
Sep 26, 2023
Delivers two in loss
Thomas went 1-for-5 with a double and two RBI in Monday's 6-4 loss to the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Thomas delivered two-out, two-run double in the first inning to give Arizona an early lead. The outfielder has scuffled during the month of September, going 13-for-67 (.194) with a .579 OPS, but the inconsistent Thomas has driven in 13 runs over 21 games this month. That's the most RBI he's had in any month this season.
Sep 17, 2023
Out of Sunday's lineup
Thomas is not in the lineup for Sunday's game versus the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Thomas has a .539 OPS through 15 games in September and will sit Sunday after making three straight starts. Corbin Carrol will move to center field while Jake McCarthy starts in right.
Sep 16, 2023
Lifts homer in win
Thomas went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Friday's 6-4 win over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Thomas padded the Diamondbacks' lead in the sixth inning with his second homer and eighth hit over 14 contests this month. Despite his mediocre hitting of late, he's still playing more often than not. The outfielder has posted a .236/.278/.390 slash line with nine long balls, 35 RBI, 47 runs scored and nine stolen bases through 112 games this season while seeing the bulk of his playing time in center field.
Sep 13, 2023
On bench versus lefty
Thomas is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Lourdes Gurriel, Jake McCarthy and Tommy Pham will start across the outfield for the Diamondbacks as they take on left-hander Joey Lucchesi. Thomas has batted just .121/.159/.182 in 69 plate appearances versus southpaws this year.
Sep 11, 2023
On bench against southpaw
Thomas is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
The lefty-hitting Thomas will head to the bench for the series opener while the Mets bring southpaw Jose Quintana to the hill. With Thomas taking a seat, the Diamondbacks will start an outfield trio of Lourdes Gurriel, Corbin Carroll and Tommy Pham from left to right.
Sep 9, 2023
Idle versus lefty
Thomas isn't in the Diamondbacks' lineup Saturday against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
With lefty Justin Steele on the mound for Chicago, the left-handed bat of Thomas will remain in Arizona's dugout to begin Saturday's contest. Corbin Carroll will slide to center field while Thomas sits, moving Tommy Pham into right field and Evan Longoria in as the D-backs' DH.
Sep 8, 2023
Tallies a hit and a steal
Thomas went 1-for-4 with one steal in Friday's 1-0 win over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Thomas has now stolen bases in back-to-back games after also swiping a bag in Thursday's victory over the Cubs. He also posted the hardest hit ball of the game with a 109.3-mph single in the ninth inning. The 23-year-old has produced a .263 batting average with six homers and six stolen bases over 210 plate appearances since being recalled from Triple-A on June 19.
Sep 6, 2023
Drives in five
Thomas went 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBI in Wednesday's 12-5 win over the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Thomas put the Diamondbacks in front 6-5 in the third inning with a three-run homer off Chris Flexen, his eighth of the season, before driving in two more runs with a base hit in the fourth. Thomas had gone just 2-for-20 with one RBI in seven games before Wednesday's contest, and the home run was his first since Aug. 1. Overall, the 23-year-old outfielder is slashing .241/.284/.396 with 44 runs scored, 31 RBI and seven steals through 325 plate appearances this season. Thomas has gotten regular playing time against right-handed pitching, though he could see an expanded role if Corbin Carroll (wrist) is forced to miss time.
Sep 5, 2023
On bench against lefty
Thomas is not in the lineup Tuesday versus the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Lourdes Gurriel, Corbin Carroll and Tommy Pham will start across the outfield for the Diamondbacks as they take on left-hander Kyle Freeland. Thomas has batted just .108 with a .304 OPS in 67 plate appearances against lefties this year.
Aug 29, 2023
Sitting against lefty
Thomas is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Lourdes Gurriel, Corbin Carroll and Tommy Pham will start across the outfield for the Diamondbacks as they take on left-hander Clayton Kershaw. Thomas has slashed .098/.127/.164 in 63 plate appearances versus lefties this year.
Aug 24, 2023
Sitting against lefty
Thomas is not in the lineup Thursday versus the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Lourdes Gurriel, Corbin Carroll and Tommy Pham will start across the outfield for the Diamondbacks as they face off against left-hander Brandon Williamson. Thomas has slashed just .100/.129/.167 in 62 plate appearances off southpaws this year.
Aug 20, 2023
Five hits in doubleheader
Thomas went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader sweep over the Padres. He went 2-for-3 with three runs scored in the second game.
ANALYSIS
Thomas busted out with his first multi-hit game since July 29. August hasn't been kind to the outfielder who entered Saturday's doubleheader batting .219 (7-for-32) during 15 games this month. Thomas has been a better hitter since a return from the minors, but the Diamondbacks will continue to limit his exposure to southpaws.
Aug 15, 2023
Sitting versus lefty
Thomas is out of the lineup Tuesday at Colorado.
ANALYSIS
Lourdes Gurriel, Corbin Carroll and Tommy Pham will start across the outfield for the Diamondbacks as they face off against Rockies left-hander Ty Blach. Thomas has batted just .077/.111/.154 in 54 plate appearances versus southpaws this year.
Aug 12, 2023
Sitting versus southpaw
Thomas isn't starting Saturday against the Padres, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Thomas will take a seat Saturday as Rich Hill prepares to start on the mound for the Padres. Corbin Carroll will slide over to center field, allowing Jake McCarthy to start in right field.
Aug 11, 2023
Sitting versus lefty
Thomas isn't in Arizona's lineup Friday against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
With left-hander Blake Snell starting on the mound for San Diego, Thomas will take a seat to begin Friday's game. Corbin Carroll will shift to center field in Thomas' place, and Jake McCarthy will get the nod in right.
Aug 8, 2023
Out against lefty
Thomas isn't in the Diamondbacks' lineup Tuesday against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
With left-hander Julio Urias set to start on the mound for Los Angeles, the lefty-hitting Thomas will remain in the dugout for the beginning of Tuesday's contest. Corbin Carroll will shift over to center field in Thomas' place, and Jake McCarthy will start in right.
Aug 6, 2023
Hits bench Sunday
Thomas is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
The lefty-hitting Thomas will sit for the second time this weekend while the Twins bring a southpaw (Dallas Keuchel) to the hill for the series finale. With the Diamondbacks acquiring outfielder/designated hitter Tommy Pham from the Mets on Tuesday, Thomas and fellow left-handed hitter Jake McCarthy would seem to be most at risk of losing playing time.
Aug 4, 2023
Sits down Friday
Thomas isn't in Arizona's lineup Friday against Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
After going 1-for-13 with a homer and six strikeouts in his last five games, Thomas will get a day off Friday to regroup. Corbin Carroll will slide over to center field in Thomas' absence, allowing Tommy Pham to start in left and bat fifth.
Aug 2, 2023
Homers Tuesday
Thomas went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Thomas has been steady of late, going 9-for-31 (.290) with two homers and four RBI over his last 10 contests. The outfielder is up to seven long balls in 73 games this season, one homer shy of matching his total from last year. He's added a .239/.274/.419 slash line with 20 RBI, 31 runs scored, five stolen bases, 13 doubles and three triples over 234 plate appearances.
Jul 30, 2023
On bench Sunday
Thomas is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Thomas has a .256/.273/.442 slash line in 12 games since the All-Star break, and he'll take a seat Sunday with righty Luis Castillo taking the mound for Seattle. Corbin Carrol will shift to center field while Lourdes Gurriel and Dominic Canzone start in the corner outfield.
Jul 22, 2023
Sits against southpaw
Thomas will be on the bench against lefty Brandon Williamson and the Reds on Saturday, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports.
ANALYSIS
Thomas has hit well since returning to the big leagues in mid-June, slashing .293/.301/.524 with four homers in 25 games. Part of his success may stem from the fact that the Diamondbacks have shielded him from facing lefties, starting him against just one of the five the team has faced in the last month. Corbin Carroll will shift to center field Saturday, with Lourdes Gurriel Jr. taking Carroll's usual spot in left.
Jul 10, 2023
Homers again
Thomas went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 4-2 loss to Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Thomas' third-inning homer was his second in as many games. In a promising sign, the home run came off a lefty, an area of weakness for the outfielder 2023 and what had him demoted to Triple-A Reno earlier. He's 3-for-42 against southpaws and 2-for-6 since being recalled mid-June. Thomas is batting .328/.339/.569 over 19 games since his return to the majors.
Jul 9, 2023
Comes through in clutch
Thomas went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Saturday's 3-2 extra-inning win against Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Thomas made out in his first two plate appearances before coming up big late in the contest. He smacked a game-tying solo shot to lead off the eighth inning, providing the Diamondbacks with their first run of the game. Thomas then reached on an infield single in the 10th to again knock in the tying run. The outfielder had been struggling coming into Saturday, batting .192 (5-for-26) with no RBI over his previous 10 contests.
Jul 2, 2023
Locked into regular role
Thomas will start in center field and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Even with the Diamondbacks facing off against a southpaw (Reid Detmers) in the series finale, the lefty-hitting Thomas will return to the lineup after sitting out Saturday's 3-1 win. Thomas has now started in 11 of the Diamondbacks' last 13 games overall and appears to have re-established himself as a near-everyday player in the Arizona outfield following the recent demotion of Pavin Smith to Triple-A Reno.
Jun 26, 2023
Multi-hit effort in win
Thomas went 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 5-2 win over San Francisco.
ANALYSIS
Thomas rejoined the starting lineup after getting Saturday off and logged a third multi-hit effort in the seven games since being called up from Triple-A Reno. The outfielder is 10-for-25 (.400) with a home run, three doubles, three RBI and six runs scored since returning to the majors. Of note, he's had just one at-bat against a left-hander during this recent run, and it was his futility against southpaws (1-for-36) that was the primary reason he was demoted to the minors in May.
Jun 24, 2023
Receives Saturday off
Thomas isn't in Arizona's lineup Saturday against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
After going 7-for-21 with a homer, three RBI and five runs scored across his last five games, Thomas will get a breather Saturday. His absence moves Corbin Carroll into center field, Lourdes Gurriel in left and allows Pavin Smith to serve as the D-backs' DH while batting sixth.
Jun 22, 2023
Puts exclamation point on return
Thomas went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 5-1 win over the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Thomas, who was called up from Triple-A Reno on Monday, returned to MLB in a big way. He went 6-for-13 with a double, homer, three RBI and four runs scored over the three-game series in Milwaukee. As good as Thomas was during the series, including superlative defense in center field, it remains to be seen if he's solved the issue of hitting against left-handed pitching. Thomas had one at-bat during the series -- a fielder's choice grounder to second base against Milwaukee's Hoby Milner -- but the overall results were hopeful he continue to do in the majors what he did in the minors the last month (.348/.409/.518).
Jun 20, 2023
Big game in return
Thomas went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional run in a 9-1 win against the Brewers on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Thomas spent over a month in the minors before he was recalled Monday, and the adjustments he made while with Triple-A Reno appeared to have paid off, at least for one game. The outfielder wasted little time announcing his return, smacking a two-run shot off Corbin Burnes in the first inning. If Thomas continues to hit well, he could challenge Pavin Smith -- who has posted a mediocre .674 OPS on the season -- for playing time in right field moving forward.
Jun 19, 2023
Back in big leagues
Thomas was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Thomas ditched his leg kick after being sent down to Reno a month ago and batted .348/.409/.518 with three home runs and two stolen bases over 26 games to earn another shot in the majors. Granted, it's a very favorable environment he was hitting in, but it will be interesting to see whether Thomas can carry over the adjustments at the major-league level. He could push Pavin Smith for playing time.
Jun 17, 2023
Work on swing paying off
Thomas adjusted his swing at the minors and is batting .349/.413/.500 over 25 games at Triple-A Reno, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Thomas, who opened the season in the Diamondbacks' outfield, was demoted to Triple-A on May 17. His struggles against left-handers -- 1-for-36 with a single -- was the main reason Thomas was sent down. He immediately got to work on his swing mechanics with, Drew Hedman, the organization's director of minor league hitting coach. They started by ditching a leg kick, but Hedman and Thomas eventually settled on improving the timing of his weight transfer, which seems to have worked against pitchers of either hand. Thomas is slashing .314/.324/.429 against southpaws.
May 18, 2023
Work needed in minors
The Diamondbacks will work on fixing Thomas' swing while he's in the minors, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports. Thomas was demoted to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Specifically, the organization is focused on excessive movement in the lower half of his body, which can lead to groundballs rolled over to the right side of the infield. There's also been an issue identifying strikes on outer half of the plate. "There's a lot of excessive movement with the lower half which is creating some force moving forward, I know to impact the baseball but I feel like it was changing his sightlines," manager Torey Lovullo said. In addition to work at the plate, Lovullo identified areas in the field that Thomas needs to address, like routes taken on batted balls and taking the proper angle. Dominic Fletcher will take over in the outfield while Thomas works at Reno.
May 17, 2023
Optioned to Triple-A
Thomas was optioned to Triple-A Reno by the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The writing seemed to be on the wall with Thomas losing playing time against right-handers lately. The 23-year-old could use a reset, as he's managed just a .195/.252/.327 batting line with two home runs in his first 39 games this season. Dominic Fletcher has taken over as Arizona's center fielder.
May 14, 2023
Sitting against southpaw
Thomas is out of the starting lineup against the Marlins on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Thomas is not expected to see playing time against left-handers for the foreseeable future, and he's not in the lineup against southpaw Braxton Garrett on Sunday. Dominic Fletcher is getting the start in center field and hitting seventh against Garrett and Miami.
May 14, 2023
Losing at-bats
Thomas will start against right-handers and be out of the lineup against lefties going forward, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
This is an alteration the Diamondbacks introduced over the last week, but it was uncertain how long it would last. Thomas is a prized prospect but is struggling with pitches on the outer half of the plate. And now he must contend with the suddenly hot Dominic Fletcher, an under-the-radar prospect who was called up to help fill in when Corbin Carroll injured his knee two weeks. Carroll is back and Fletcher is in the midst of a career-enhancing series against the Giants, going 8-for-12 with a double, a triple, two home runs and 11 RBI.
May 11, 2023
Returns to starting lineup
Thomas started in center field and went 0-for-2 with an RBI in Wednesday's 5-4 loss to the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Thomas made his first start since Saturday, a stretch that included one righty and two lefty opposing starters. He was eventually removed for a pinch hitter in the sixth inning against lefty reliever Tanner Scott. The outfielder is 1-for-33 (.030) against southpaws, and it appears to be costing him at-bats. His underlying numbers suggest bad luck, but he's noticed pitchers are attacking a weakness, balls on the outside part of the plate, per Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic. "That's all they're doing is painting away, painting away," Thomas said. "It's probably a good idea. If they bring it somewhere in the zone, I feel like I'll be able to hit it." Thomas is slashing .196/.259/.333 over 112 plate appearances.
May 9, 2023
Out of lineup versus lefty
Thomas remains out of the lineup Tuesday against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Thomas hasn't appeared in the Diamondbacks' starting lineup since Saturday and he will take a seat again Tuesday with left-hander Jesus Luzardo toeing the slab for Miami. Thomas has tallied only one hit -- a single -- in 34 plate appearances this year versus southpaws.
May 8, 2023
Absent from lineup again
Thomas is not in the Diamondbacks' lineup for Monday's game versus the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
It's the second straight game on the bench for Thomas, with one of them coming against a righty and now this one versus a lefty. Corbin Carroll will play center field and Dominic Fletcher will be in left.
May 7, 2023
Not in Sunday's lineup
Thomas is out of the lineup for Sunday's game versus the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Thomas started the past 16 games and will receive Sunday off after he posted a .592 OPS and 33.3 percent strikeout rate during that stretch. Dominic Fletcher will take over in center field and bat seventh.
May 4, 2023
Steals base in loss
Thomas went 0-for-5 with a stolen base in Wednesday's 12-7 loss to the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Thomas stole a bag during Arizona's five-run seventh inning, his third theft in four attempts over 29 games. It's been rough going for the second-year outfielder, whose average dipped to .176. For those employing Thomas in fantasy lineups, the silver lining is that his expected average (.253) indicates bad luck, backed up by a .209 BABIP.
Apr 24, 2023
Homers in loss
Thomas went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 7-5 loss to the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Thomas belted the second of back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning, giving him two for the season. The results are not there early on for Thomas, who is batting .188 with a .200 BABIP, despite Statcast indicating an expected average of .291.
Apr 20, 2023
Goes deep in loss
Thomas went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 14-5 loss to the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Thomas helped erase an early 3-0 deficit with a second-inning homer, his first of the season. The young outfielder has hit safely in just five of 15 starts and is batting .176 through 17 appearances overall. The Diamondbacks appeared to be committed to Thomas, who played 113 games in the majors last season, but his role could diminish given the promising start of Pavin Smith, another lefty batter, who if off to a .381 start since being called up from Triple-A Reno. It helps Thomas that Jake McCarthy (.154) is also underwhelming, and the latter could be first in line to lose a prominent role in the outfield.
Apr 18, 2023
Added to lineup Tuesday
Thomas was added to the starting lineup Tuesday against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Thomas will start in center field and bat ninth versus the Cardinals and left-hander Jordan Montgomery. He's taking the place of Corbin Carroll, who has been scratched.
Apr 18, 2023
Sitting against lefty
Thomas is not in the lineup Tuesday at St. Louis.
ANALYSIS
Corbin Carroll is in center field and batting sixth with left-hander Jordan Montgomery on the mound for the host Cardinals. Jake McCarthy will cover right field and hit ninth. Thomas has slashed just .186/.271/.279 through 48 total plate appearances on the year.
Apr 15, 2023
Sitting against lefty
Thomas is not in the lineup Saturday against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Lourdes Gurriel will start in left field, Corbin Carroll will cover center and Jake McCarthy is in right with left-hander Braxton Garrett on the mound for Miami. Thomas has slashed just .184/.262/.289 with zero homers and two stolen bases through 13 games this season.
Apr 10, 2023
Busting out
Thomas went 1-for-5 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in Sunday's 11-6 win over the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Thomas, who went hitless in his first 16 at-bats, had a nice weekend against Los Angeles, going 5-for-9 with a triple, two RBI, three runs scored and his second steal of the season. The outfielder had been the victim of bad luck (.217 BABIP) and ranks in the 97th percentile in average exit velocity (95.6 MPH). As such, a breakout was expected for Thomas, who's batting .200 with an expected average of .342.
Apr 3, 2023
Sitting out Monday
Thomas is not in the Diamondbacks' lineup for Monday's game in San Diego.
ANALYSIS
Thomas has now been on the bench for two of his team's three games versus left-handers so far this season. He's also hitless in nine plate appearances, which isn't helping his bid for playing time. Corbin Carroll will slide over to center field Monday, with Lourdes Gurriel playing left and Kyle Lewis being used in the designated hitter spot.
Apr 2, 2023
Faces lefty
Thomas started in center field and went 0-for-3 in Saturday's 10-1 loss to the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Thomas took the field against left-hander Clayton Kershaw on Saturday, getting his first plate appearances against a southpaw. He was held out of the Opening Day lineup against a lefty then was pinch-hit for Friday against a lefty reliever. It appears manager Torey Lovullo will remove one his left-handed hitting outfielders against lefty starters, and it was Jake McCarthy's turn Saturday. Thomas is 0-for-5 through two games played.
Apr 1, 2023
Removed for pinch hitter
Thomas started in center field and went 0-for-2 in Friday's 2-1 win over the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Thomas, who was on the bench against a lefty in Thursday's opener, made his first start of the season with Los Angeles righty Dustin May on the bump. Following May's strong seven innings, lefty Alex Vesia entered, and Diamondbacks manager removed Thomas for a right-handed pinch hitter. He had a .471 OPS against southpaws in 2022, so sitting against lefties may become the norm for Thomas.
Mar 31, 2023
Getting start on Friday
Thomas is starting in center field and batting eighth for the Diamondbacks on Friday versus the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Thomas was on the bench for the opener with the Dodgers starting a lefty, but he'll get his first start in this one. He's probably not going to sit against all lefties, but Thomas does appear to be the lowest priority right now among Arizona's three left-handed hitting outfielders.
Mar 31, 2023
Sits out opener
Thomas did not play in Arizona's season-opening 8-2 loss to the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo's Opening Day lineup included a few surprises, in terms of where players batted and those that were not in the starting lineup. The lefty-swinging Thomas was on the bench against Los Angeles lefty Julio Urias, as Corbin Carroll moved from left field to center. The lineup had a righty-hitting influence as both Kyle Lewis (DH) and Lourdes Gurriel (LF) were in the starting nine. Lovullo has always been a proponent of exploiting lefty-righty matchups, but leaving Thomas out of the lineup was a surprise.
Mar 5, 2023
Drives in three runs
Thomas went 1-for-2 2 with a triple, a sacrifice fly and three RBI in Sunday's spring game against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Thomas is raking through six Cactus League outings, going 6-for-19 with three extra-base hits and eight RBI. Thomas is racking up the plate appearances ahead of his participation in the World Baseball Classic. When he returns to MLB, Thomas will be Arizona's Opening Day starter in center field.
Mar 3, 2023
Off to strong start
Thomas went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored in Thursday's spring game against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Thomas has raced out of the gate with five hits, two doubles and five RBI over his first 13 Cactus League at-bats. The Diamondbacks' starting center fielder is tied for the team lead in plate appearances in advance of his participation for Team Mexico as the World Baseball Classic.
Sep 27, 2022
Needs work on pitch selection
Thomas has expanded the strike zone, which was a main reason he was optioned to Triple-A Reno, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. "He's trying to cover everything high, low, in and out. We're encouraging him to shrink up the zone and have a better feel for having an opposite-field approach to stay on the baseball so you don't pull off of it," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said.
ANALYSIS
Thomas slumped during the month of September, going 1-for-31 since Sept. 10. He alluded to the struggles he's had last week to Piecoro, noting that he's swinging at too many pitcher's pitches, offerings at the outer edge of the plate. Thomas will get a chance to cut the plate in half over the final week at Reno, which has three games remaining in its regular season then play a one-game playoff for the Pacific Coast League championship on Friday.
Sep 26, 2022
Heads to minors
The Diamondbacks optioned Thomas to Triple-A Reno on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Thomas loses his roster during a brutal September in which he's posted a .302 OPS. He heads to Triple-A so Jake McCarthy (bereavement) can rejoin the active roster.
Sep 25, 2022
Sitting versus lefty
Thomas is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Thomas will sit for the second time in the past three games since southpaw Scott Alexander is starting Sunday for San Francisco. Corbin Carroll will shift to center field while Stone Garrett starts in left.
Sep 23, 2022
Out against lefty
Thomas is not in Friday's lineup against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Thomas has not started against a lefty since Sept. 12, so it's unsurprising to see him on the bench against Carlos Rodon. Stone Garrett, Corbin Carroll and Jordan Luplow will start in the outfield from left to right.
Sep 22, 2022
Benched versus lefty
Thomas isn't starting Thursday's contest with the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Left-hander Julio Urias will start on the mound for Los Angeles, so fellow left-hander Thomas will watch the beginning of Thursday's game in the dugout. Daulton Varsho will cover for him in center field, giving Jordan Luplow a start in right field while batting sixth.
Sep 20, 2022
Sits nightcap against lefty
Thomas isn't in the lineup for the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Thomas will retreat to the bench in Game 2 against lefty Tyler Anderson after going 1-for-4 with a run scored in the early game. Jake McCarthy will take his spot in center field, moving Ketel Marte into the designated hitter role and giving Sergio Alcantara an opportunity to start at second base, batting eighth.
Sep 19, 2022
Resting against southpaw
Thomas isn't starting Monday's game against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Thomas went 0-for-6 over the last two games and will head to the bench with left-hander Clayton Kershaw on the mound Monday. Daulton Varsho will take over in center field and bat eighth.
Sep 16, 2022
Sits against lefty
Thomas isn't in the lineup Friday against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Left-hander Blake Snell is on the mound for San Diego on Friday, so Thomas will head to the bench for the fourth time in the last six games. Corbin Carroll is starting in center field and batting eighth.
Sep 15, 2022
On bench against left-hander

ANALYSIS

Sep 2, 2022

ANALYSIS
Thomas paced the Diamondbacks' offense with four hits, one of six batters in the lineup to record multiple hits in the blowout win. The 22-year-old outfielder entered Tuesday in an 0-for-11 slump, so this was an encouraging performance. Aug 29, 2022

On base four times
Thomas went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double and two runs scored in Tuesday's 7-3 win over the Royals.

Aug 21, 2022
Sits against southpaw
Thomas is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
With lefty Jose Quintana on the hill for St. Louis, the lefty-hitting Thomas will head to the bench for the second time in the series. The rookie should remain locked into a near-everyday role in the Arizona outfield the rest of the way, but he's hit a bit of a rough patch of late. Over his last 13 games, Thomas has slashed .149/.167/.149 with no extra-base hits and no stolen bases.
Aug 19, 2022

Thomas has a .318 wOBA and a .257/.314/.414 line across 271 plate appearances on the campaign.
Jul 31, 2022

Makes second half debut
Thomas went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 7-2 win over the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Thomas made his second-half debut after being held out Friday, the team's first game back from the All-Star break. Over 63 games, the rookie maintains a .259/.309/.417 line, all hovering around his expected rates. Thomas is on the wrong end of several Statcast batting metrics, but he's going to be a near-everyday player and given an opportunity to develop the rest of the season.
Jul 22, 2022
Not in Friday's lineup
Thomas isn't starting Friday's game against Washington.
ANALYSIS
Thomas started the last three games ahead of the All-Star break and went 2-for-11 with three strikeouts. Daulton Varsho is starting in center field while Jake McCarthy draws the start in right.

He hadn't posted a multi-hit effort since July 1, and he's now batting .237 (9-for-38) this month. The rookie outfielder owns a .250/.305/.408 slash line with seven home runs, 22 RBI, 28 runs scored, four stolen bases and eight doubles through 213 plate appearances.

Jul 1, 2022
Homer, triple in win
Thomas went 2-for-5 with a home run, a triple, three RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 9-3 win over the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Thomas entered Friday 1-for-16 across his previous five games. He put an end to that skid with an RBI triple in the first inning, and he added a two-run blast in the seventh to pad Arizona's lead. The three-bagger was the first of his major-league career. The rookie outfielder is now slashing .258/.315/.442 with seven homers, 19 RBI, 26 runs scored and four stolen bases through 178 plate appearances. Thomas had a 12-game hitting streak during June, so he's found some success at the plate early in his career and will look to get back on track in July.
Jun 26, 2022
Receives Sunday off
Thomas is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Thomas started the past 16 games and will head to the bench Sunday after posting a .317/.388/.400 slash line during that stretch. Daulton Varsho will man center field while Pavin Smith starts in right.
Jun 25, 2022
Bats second against righty
Thomas went 0-for-4 as the second batter in Friday's 5-1 loss to the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo recently moved Thomas up in the order while Ketel Marte dealt with a hamstring injury, but it was unclear if the move would be a permanent one. In the two games Marte has played since the injury, Thomas was moved back down the order against a lefty and batted second against a righty.
Jun 23, 2022
Pops sixth homer
Thomas went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and a second run scored in Wednesday's 10-4 loss to the Padres.
ANALYSIS
One day after seeing his 12-game hitting streak end, the rookie snapped a 16-game homer drought by taking Mike Clevinger deep in the third inning to get Arizona on the board. Thomas is having a productive June overall, slashing .290/.359/.449 with three of his six home runs and all four of his stolen bases on the season.
Jun 21, 2022
Hitting streak at 12 games
Thomas went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a stolen base in Monday's 4-1 loss to the Padres.
ANALYSIS
The Diamondbacks mustered only five hits in the contest, and Thomas' was the only one to go for extra bases. He also recorded his fourth steal of the season, all of which have come during his current 12-game hitting streak. In that span, the rookie outfielder is 16-for-44 (.364) with two doubles, five RBI, nine runs scored and a 6:9 BB:K. Overall, he's up to a .276/.338/.440 slash line with five home runs, 14 RBI, 22 runs scored and seven doubles through 148 plate appearances. His strong hitting has solidified his spot in the lineup as Arizona's primary center fielder.
Jun 16, 2022
Extends hit streak
Thomas went 1-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 7-4 win over the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Thomas went the other way with a second-inning double that produced Arizona's first run. That's something the rookie's worked on, as teams deploy a shift against the lefty hitter. The extra-base hit extended a hit streak to eight games and was his first multi-bag hit in 11 games. Thomas is 11-for-29 with five RBI, five walks, three stolen bases and seven runs scored during his streak.
Jun 15, 2022
Adds steal Tuesday
Thomas went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Tuesday's 5-3 extra-innings loss to the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Thomas extended his hitting streak to seven games with an infield single in the 11th inning. He then stole second and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game once again. During the streak, the rookie outfielder is 10-for-25 (.400) with three steals, four RBI and six runs. He's logged a .270/.336/.443 slash line with five home runs, three steals, 13 RBI and 19 runs in 128 plate appearances overall. Thomas has taken command of a starting role in center field, pushing the versatile Daulton Varsho to right field with the return of catcher Carson Kelly from the injured list.
Jun 14, 2022
Notches two hits, steals base
Thomas went 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base Monday in a loss to Cincinnati.
ANALYSIS
Thomas was one of only two Arizona players with multiple hits in the contest, and he scored the team's final run in the fourth inning. The rookie made another start in center field with Daulton Varsho -- who has played the position for much of the season -- moving over to right. That arrangement suggests that Arizona will be able to have both players in the lineup on a near-everyday basis despite the recent return of Carson Kelly, whose work behind the plate will cut into Varsho's playing time there.
Jun 9, 2022
Solid night in return to lineup
Thomas went 1-for-3 with one RBI, one run scored and one steal in Wednesday's victory over the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Thomas was benched Tuesday after going 0-for-9 over the previous three games, but he returned to the starting lineup and bounced back Wednesday. The rookie walked in the fourth and proceeded to steal second -- his first of the season -- and singled in the sixth, eventually coming around to score on an RBI double from Jose Herrera. Thomas added and RBI walk in the ninth to extend the Diamondbacks lead to 7-0. Across 28 games, Thomas is slashing .237/.301/.452 with five homers and 10 RBI.
Jun 7, 2022
Takes seat Tuesday
Thomas isn't starting Tuesday's game against the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Thomas went 0-for-9 with a walk and a strikeout over the last three matchups and will get a breather during Tuesday's game. David Peralta, Jake McCarthy and Jordan Luplow will start in the outfield from left to right.
Jun 4, 2022
Beats shift twice
Thomas went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI in Friday's 8-6 win over the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
The lefty-batting Thomas found a way to beat the shift. He pulled both homers over the right-center field fence, including the longest of five blasts hit by the Diamondbacks, a 432-footer that tied the game in the third inning. The rookie entered the contest on a 4-for-31 (.129) run, as opponents found success when deploying shifts against him, after Thomas opened his MLB career with a .963 OPS over 14 games.
Jun 2, 2022
Fighting shifts
Thomas has been working on his swing to achieve better results against defensive shifts, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
The lefty-swinging Thomas made a bang early after getting his first taste of the majors three-and-a-half weeks ago. He had a .326 average and .992 OPS over his first 13 games. In the nine contests since, as he's faced an increasing number of shifts, Thomas is batting .129 with a .390 OPS. The solution of hitting to the opposite field -- pushing the hands out over the plate and forcing the ball in that direction -- sounds simple, but it can lead to dropping the barrel, swings-and-misses or lazy pop-ups, per Diamondbacks hitting coach Joe Mather. He preaches backing the ball up in the swing. "That allows you to have a flatter path," Mather said. "If we can catch it deep in our swing, we're gonna be able to drive it." Training to back up the swing requires a transitional period, which Thomas is undergoing now.
May 23, 2022
Takes seat Monday
Thomas isn't starting Monday against Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
Thomas snapped a six-game hitting streak Sunday when he went 0-for-4 in the loss to the Cubs, and he'll get a breather in Monday's series opener against the Royals. Jake McCarthy will draw the start in center field and bat sixth.
May 21, 2022
Runs hit streak to five
Thomas went 2-for-4 with a double and a solo home run in Friday's 10-6 win over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Thomas got in on the home run parade -- Arizona belted seven of them at Wrigley Field -- and has three in his first 42 at-bats in the majors. The rookie extended a hitting streak to five games, during which he's 7-for-19 (.368) with three extra-base hits.
May 18, 2022
Homers in opener
Thomas went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Dodgers. He later went 2-for-4 in the nightcap.
ANALYSIS
Thomas looks like he's here to stay in the majors with 10 hits, including two home runs, over his first 31 major-league at-bats. He's doing it with a style most hitting coaches don't teach -- a pronounced leg kick and a lot of hand movement before unleashing his swing. "It feels like there's a lot going on," Arizona hitting coach Joe Mather told Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. "But when it's always been followed by production, you have to let him play it out. There is a lot going on, but basically all that is for him is just setting him up to be in position to hit the ball." With the team batting .205 (29th in MLB), the rookie's .323 average stands out.
May 15, 2022
Reaches base three times
Thomas went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and a run scored in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Thomas was back in the lineup following a day off Friday, and the prospect was moved to seventh in the order, his highest position since being added to the team a week ago. His 17 plate appearances are a small sample, but Thomas shows signs he's MLB-ready. The outfielder is 7-for-16 with four extra-base hits, three RBI and five runs scored through five games. Diamondbacks skipper Torey Lovullo may eventually move him higher in the order; Thomas spent most of his time in the minors as a leadoff batter.
May 13, 2022
Day off Friday
Thomas isn't starting Friday against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Thomas started in the last four games and went 5-for-13 with a homer, two doubles, four runs, three RBI and three strikeouts. He'll get a breather in Friday's series opener while Jordan Luplow starts in center field and bats second.
May 11, 2022
Launches first career homer
Thomas went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored in the loss to the Marlins on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Thomas took Sandy Alcantara deep in the bottom of the third inning, accounting for the only run against the starter in the contest. He later singled and scored in the eighth frame. The homer was the 22-year-old's first career. Since getting called up to the big-leagues May 8, Thomas has compiled five hits, three of which were for extra bases, four runs and three RBI in 13 at-bats.
May 11, 2022
Drives in first MLB runs
Thomas went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Tuesday's 9-3 win over Miami.
ANALYSIS
Thomas made his third straight start since moving up from Triple-A Reno and knocked in the first runs of his MLB career. He had a two-out, RBI double in the fourth inning then singled home a run in the eighth during what was a productive day for the lower half of the order. Thomas is locked in at center field while Daulton Varsho, who was the primary starter in center to begin the season, handles catching duties with Carson Kelly (oblique) sidelined. That means Varsho will require breaks and won't be bouncing between catcher and the outfield.
May 10, 2022
Makes second start
Thomas started in center field and went 0-for-3 with a run scored in Monday's 4-3 win over Miami.
ANALYSIS
Thomas made a second consecutive start in center, batting eighth in both games. He's expected to be the primary center fielder while Daulton Varsho fills in behind the plate for injured catcher Carson Kelly (oblique). The organization's plans for Thomas and Varsho are unclear when Kelly returns, but there will be tough decisions as outlined by Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, if Arizona keeps Thomas in the majors. That could be the case if he's productive and the above-.500 Diamondbacks (16-14) are winning games.
May 9, 2022
Contributes in MLB debut
Thomas started in center field and went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Sunday's 4-0 win over the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Thomas had his contract selected from Triple-A Reno and made his major-league debut. The plan is for him to start in center field for the time being while Daulton Varsho becomes the primary catcher with Carson Kelly (oblique) is on the injured list, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. Kelly was diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain, the least severe, meaning the absence will not be prolonged. However the injury plays out, it's unlikely the Diamondbacks' plan is to promote Thomas, thereby starting his MLB clock, for a short period.
May 8, 2022
Receiving call-up to big leagues
Thomas had his contract selected by the Diamondbacks on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old is one of the top prospects in baseball and will now receive his first look in the majors. Thomas made his way to Tripe-A Reno last season and hit .369/.434/.658 with eight home runs and five stolen bases in 34 games, and he continued to hit well early in 2022 with an .857 OPS. He should take over the starting job in center field while Daulton Varsho, who has 22 starts in center, sees more time behind the plate with catcher Carson Kelly (oblique) moving to the injured list.
Apr 29, 2022
Hits one, takes one
Thomas went 1-for-5 with a solo home run and a second run scored for Triple-A Reno on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Thomas, who turned 28 on Thursday, belted a towering home run in the fifth inning, the third of the season for Arizona prospect. Then, in the bottom half of the frame, he took a homer away from Nomar Mazara of El Paso with a leaping grab over the center field wall. Thomas has a .263/.329/.500 line with 11 extra-base hits, nine RBI and 12 runs scored through 18 games (85 plate appearances). This is second tour for the Aces after getting a 34-game exposure to Triple-A at the end of 2021. The center fielder should make it to the show later in 2022.
Mar 31, 2022
Sent to minor-league camp
Thomas was reassigned to minor-league spring training Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Thomas was in the mix to serve as the Diamondbacks' starting center fielder this spring, but he was unable to land a spot on the Opening Day roster after hitting .214 with two doubles, four RBI, three runs, a walk and 10 strikeouts across 10 Cactus League appearances this spring. He hit .369 across 34 appearances at Triple-A Reno last year, and he'll likely be in consideration to make his major-league debut at some point in 2022.
Mar 17, 2022
In mix for CF
Arizona general manager Mike Hazen said Wednesday that Thomas is among a group of players that could win the Opening Day center field job, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thomas is one of the top prospects in the organization, but has only one month at the Triple-A level. It was an impressive month, though, as Thomas slashed .369/.434/.658 over 34 games at Triple-A Reno. The Diamondbacks seem intent on making Ketel Marte a permanent second baseman in 2022, which opens up center field. The putative starter is Daulton Varsho; however, Hazen made sure to include Thomas' name in the list of players in competition. Jake McCarthy and Jordan Luplow will also get time in center during spring training.
Aug 30, 2021
Back-to-back four-hit games
Thomas delivered his second straight four-hit performance Sunday for Triple-A Reno, finishing 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and a run.
ANALYSIS
Thomas hasn't needed much time to adjust to Triple-A pitching since receiving a promotion from Double-A Amarillo two weeks earlier. Through nine games at Reno, Thomas is batting .378 with five extra-base hits, two stolen bases and a 5:9 BB:K.
Aug 16, 2021
Gets call to Triple-A
The Diamondbacks promoted Thomas from Double-A Amarillo to Triple-A Reno on Monday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Monday was moving day for several of Arizona's more highly regarded prospects, as starting pitcher Luis Frias will move up to Reno with Thomas, while starter Brandon Pfaadt and outfielder Eduardo Diaz were promoted to Amarillo from High-A Hillsboro. The 21-year-old Thomas slashed .283/.374/.507 with 10 home runs and an 8-for-13 success rate on steal attempts over 329 plate appearances at Double-A.
Jul 1, 2021
Joins Futures lineup
Thomas will represent the Diamondbacks in the All-Star Futures Game during All-Star weekend, Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thomas is currently hitting .282 with 11 doubles, four triples, five home runs and 23 RBI for Double-A Amarillo. It's been a nice bounce back season for Thomas, who experienced growing pains at High-A Visalia in 2019.
