Of note, he's had just one at-bat against a left-hander during this recent run, and it was his futility against southpaws (1-for-36) that was the primary reason he was demoted to the minors in May.

Thomas had one at-bat during the series -- a fielder's choice grounder to second base against Milwaukee's Hoby Milner -- but the overall results were hopeful he continue to do in the majors what he did in the minors the last month (.348/.409/.518).

Thomas spent over a month in the minors before he was recalled Monday, and the adjustments he made while with Triple-A Reno appeared to have paid off, at least for one game. The outfielder wasted little time announcing his return, smacking a two-run shot off Corbin Burnes in the first inning. If Thomas continues to hit well, he could challenge Pavin Smith -- who has posted a mediocre .674 OPS on the season -- for playing time in right field moving forward.

Thomas was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Monday.

Thomas ditched his leg kick after being sent down to Reno a month ago and batted .348/.409/.518 with three home runs and two stolen bases over 26 games to earn another shot in the majors. Granted, it's a very favorable environment he was hitting in, but it will be interesting to see whether Thomas can carry over the adjustments at the major-league level. He could push Pavin Smith for playing time.

Thomas adjusted his swing at the minors and is batting .349/.413/.500 over 25 games at Triple-A Reno, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.

Thomas, who opened the season in the Diamondbacks' outfield, was demoted to Triple-A on May 17. His struggles against left-handers -- 1-for-36 with a single -- was the main reason Thomas was sent down. He immediately got to work on his swing mechanics with, Drew Hedman, the organization's director of minor league hitting coach. They started by ditching a leg kick, but Hedman and Thomas eventually settled on improving the timing of his weight transfer, which seems to have worked against pitchers of either hand. Thomas is slashing .314/.324/.429 against southpaws.

The Diamondbacks will work on fixing Thomas' swing while he's in the minors, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports. Thomas was demoted to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.

Specifically, the organization is focused on excessive movement in the lower half of his body, which can lead to groundballs rolled over to the right side of the infield. There's also been an issue identifying strikes on outer half of the plate. "There's a lot of excessive movement with the lower half which is creating some force moving forward, I know to impact the baseball but I feel like it was changing his sightlines," manager Torey Lovullo said. In addition to work at the plate, Lovullo identified areas in the field that Thomas needs to address, like routes taken on batted balls and taking the proper angle. Dominic Fletcher will take over in the outfield while Thomas works at Reno.

Thomas was optioned to Triple-A Reno by the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

The writing seemed to be on the wall with Thomas losing playing time against right-handers lately. The 23-year-old could use a reset, as he's managed just a .195/.252/.327 batting line with two home runs in his first 39 games this season. Dominic Fletcher has taken over as Arizona's center fielder.

Thomas is out of the starting lineup against the Marlins on Sunday.

Thomas is not expected to see playing time against left-handers for the foreseeable future, and he's not in the lineup against southpaw Braxton Garrett on Sunday. Dominic Fletcher is getting the start in center field and hitting seventh against Garrett and Miami.

This is an alteration the Diamondbacks introduced over the last week, but it was uncertain how long it would last. Thomas is a prized prospect but is struggling with pitches on the outer half of the plate. And now he must contend with the suddenly hot Dominic Fletcher, an under-the-radar prospect who was called up to help fill in when Corbin Carroll injured his knee two weeks. Carroll is back and Fletcher is in the midst of a career-enhancing series against the Giants, going 8-for-12 with a double, a triple, two home runs and 11 RBI.

"That's all they're doing is painting away, painting away," Thomas said. "It's probably a good idea. If they bring it somewhere in the zone, I feel like I'll be able to hit it." Thomas is slashing .196/.259/.333 over 112 plate appearances.

Thomas remains out of the lineup Tuesday against the Marlins.

Thomas hasn't appeared in the Diamondbacks' starting lineup since Saturday and he will take a seat again Tuesday with left-hander Jesus Luzardo toeing the slab for Miami. Thomas has tallied only one hit -- a single -- in 34 plate appearances this year versus southpaws.

Thomas will get a chance to cut the plate in half over the final week at Reno, which has three games remaining in its regular season then play a one-game playoff for the Pacific Coast League championship on Friday.

The rookie entered the contest on a 4-for-31 (.129) run, as opponents found success when deploying shifts against him, after Thomas opened his MLB career with a .963 OPS over 14 games.

Thomas has been working on his swing to achieve better results against defensive shifts, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.

The lefty-swinging Thomas made a bang early after getting his first taste of the majors three-and-a-half weeks ago. He had a .326 average and .992 OPS over his first 13 games. In the nine contests since, as he's faced an increasing number of shifts, Thomas is batting .129 with a .390 OPS. The solution of hitting to the opposite field -- pushing the hands out over the plate and forcing the ball in that direction -- sounds simple, but it can lead to dropping the barrel, swings-and-misses or lazy pop-ups, per Diamondbacks hitting coach Joe Mather. He preaches backing the ball up in the swing. "That allows you to have a flatter path," Mather said. "If we can catch it deep in our swing, we're gonna be able to drive it." Training to back up the swing requires a transitional period, which Thomas is undergoing now.

Thomas isn't starting Monday against Kansas City.

There is a lot going on, but basically all that is for him is just setting him up to be in position to hit the ball." With the team batting .205 (29th in MLB), the rookie's .323 average stands out.

He should take over the starting job in center field while Daulton Varsho, who has 22 starts in center, sees more time behind the plate with catcher Carson Kelly (oblique) moving to the injured list.

Thomas, who turned 28 on Thursday, belted a towering home run in the fifth inning, the third of the season for Arizona prospect. Then, in the bottom half of the frame, he took a homer away from Nomar Mazara of El Paso with a leaping grab over the center field wall. Thomas has a .263/.329/.500 line with 11 extra-base hits, nine RBI and 12 runs scored through 18 games (85 plate appearances). This is second tour for the Aces after getting a 34-game exposure to Triple-A at the end of 2021. The center fielder should make it to the show later in 2022.

Thomas was reassigned to minor-league spring training Thursday.

Thomas was in the mix to serve as the Diamondbacks' starting center fielder this spring, but he was unable to land a spot on the Opening Day roster after hitting .214 with two doubles, four RBI, three runs, a walk and 10 strikeouts across 10 Cactus League appearances this spring. He hit .369 across 34 appearances at Triple-A Reno last year, and he'll likely be in consideration to make his major-league debut at some point in 2022.

Arizona general manager Mike Hazen said Wednesday that Thomas is among a group of players that could win the Opening Day center field job, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Thomas is one of the top prospects in the organization, but has only one month at the Triple-A level. It was an impressive month, though, as Thomas slashed .369/.434/.658 over 34 games at Triple-A Reno. The Diamondbacks seem intent on making Ketel Marte a permanent second baseman in 2022, which opens up center field. The putative starter is Daulton Varsho; however, Hazen made sure to include Thomas' name in the list of players in competition. Jake McCarthy and Jordan Luplow will also get time in center during spring training.

Thomas delivered his second straight four-hit performance Sunday for Triple-A Reno, finishing 4-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and a run.

Thomas hasn't needed much time to adjust to Triple-A pitching since receiving a promotion from Double-A Amarillo two weeks earlier. Through nine games at Reno, Thomas is batting .378 with five extra-base hits, two stolen bases and a 5:9 BB:K.

The Diamondbacks promoted Thomas from Double-A Amarillo to Triple-A Reno on Monday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.

Monday was moving day for several of Arizona's more highly regarded prospects, as starting pitcher Luis Frias will move up to Reno with Thomas, while starter Brandon Pfaadt and outfielder Eduardo Diaz were promoted to Amarillo from High-A Hillsboro. The 21-year-old Thomas slashed .283/.374/.507 with 10 home runs and an 8-for-13 success rate on steal attempts over 329 plate appearances at Double-A.

Thomas will represent the Diamondbacks in the All-Star Futures Game during All-Star weekend, Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports.

Thomas is currently hitting .282 with 11 doubles, four triples, five home runs and 23 RBI for Double-A Amarillo. It's been a nice bounce back season for Thomas, who experienced growing pains at High-A Visalia in 2019.
