Struggles early in loss
Abbott (8-6) took the loss Wednesday, allowing three runs on eight hits over 2.1 innings against Cleveland. He struck out one and did not walk a batter.
ANALYSIS
Abbot ran into trouble early on after surrendering a leadoff double to Ramon Laureano to open the second. The lefty allowed five consecutive hits to start the frame and then gave up hits to two of the first three batters he faced in the third before being relieved by Daniel Duarte. Abbot has now failed to make it through five innings in four consecutive starts while his one strikeout Wednesday marked a season low. He's also lost his last three decisions and now holds a 6.10 ERA in September.

Fans seven in no-decision
Abbott (8-5) did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over 4.1 innings in a 7-5 loss against the Pirates. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Abbott mostly cruised through the first three innings before serving up a solo homer to Ke'Bryan Hayes in the top of the fourth and an additional solo shot to Henry Davis in the top of the fifth. The rookie left-hander still managed to generate a lot of whiffs and will carry a respectable 3.70 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 119:44 K:BB into his final regular-season start next week at Cleveland.

Early exit in no-decision
Abbott came away with a no-decision Saturday in the Reds' 3-2 win over the Mets, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The rookie southpaw tossed an inefficient 91 pitches (54 strikes) before getting the hook after serving up a pair of doubles in the bottom of the fourth inning, missing out on his ninth win of the season in the process. Abbott has failed to complete more than four innings in four of his last five starts, stumbling to a 6.33 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and 24:15 K:BB through 21.1 innings over that stretch, but the Reds don't have any better rotation options as they try to hang onto a wild-card spot in the NL. He lines up to take the mound next at home against the Pirates next weekend.

Will start against Mets
Abbott's next start will come during the series against the Mets that opens Friday in New York, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Reds manager David Bell said he'll start Friday or Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Bell is trying to manage Abbott's workload. The rookie left-hander blew past his previous career-high innings (118.0) in early August and is up to 153 in 2023. The workload appears to be impacting Abbott's performance, as the 24-year-old has a 6.51 ERA with 42 hits and 20 walks allowed over the last 37.1 innings.

Won't start Wednesday
Abbott will not start for the Reds on Wednesday in Detroit in what would be his next turn in the rotation, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Abbott's 153 innings between the majors and minors this season is already 35 frames past his previous career high, and he's looked of late like he might be hitting a wall with a 6.51 ERA over his last eight starts. The Reds currently have TBD listed for Thursday, and it's possible Abbott winds up taking the ball that day. For now, though, his next scheduled start looks to be up in the air.

Yields six runs in loss
Abbott (8-5) took the loss Friday, allowing six runs on four hits and three walks over four innings against St. Louis. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
After a stellar 1.90 ERA and 66:19 K:BB in 61.2 innings over his first 10 starts, Abbott has struggled mightily of late. The 24-year-old rookie sports a 6.51 ERA with 41:20 K:BB in 37.1 innings over his last eight starts. Abbott looks to right the ship in his next outing, scheduled to be at Detroit.

Quality start in no-decision
Abbott did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over 6.1 innings in a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old southpaw held the Cubs scoreless through 6.1 innings before Jeimer Candelario launched a solo shot, chasing Abbott from the game with a 1-0 deficit. Cincinnati scored two to secure a walk-off win and get Abbott off the hook for what would have been an unfortunate loss. This was his first quality start since he notched three in a row coming out of the All-Star break. During his six starts in the interim, Abbott posted a 6.67 ERA and 1.81 WHIP across 27 innings. He currently lines up for a home matchup versus the Cardinals at the end of next week.

Loses in San Francisco
Abbott (8-4) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out six over 3.1 innings to take the loss Monday versus the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Abbott failed to complete five innings for the second start in a row, and he wasn't lucky enough to escape with a no-decision this time. Two of the five hits he allowed were RBI doubles, and he gave up the third run on a sacrifice fly. The 24-year-old southpaw is at a 3.35 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 99:34 K:BB through 88.2 innings over 16 starts this season. With a career-high 142.2 innings across all levels in 2023, Abbott may simply be running out of gas late in the year. He's tentatively projected for a home start versus the Cubs over the weekend.

Escapes with no-decision
Abbott came away with a no-decision in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Angels, giving up three runs on five hits and four walks over four-plus innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The rookie southpaw stuck around long enough to see the Reds take the lead in the top of the fifth inning, but after he put the first two batters aboard in the bottom of the frame, Abbott got the hook and failed to qualify for the win in an eventual 9-4 victory. He's now failed to complete six innings in five straight starts, posting a 6.46 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 27:12 K:BB through 23.2 innings over that stretch. Abbott will try to get on track in his next outing, likely to come early next week in San Francisco.

Notches eighth win
Abbott (8-3) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits over five innings against the Guardians. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Abbott's held opponents to just two runs in each of his last two starts (10.2 innings), striking out 14 in that span without issuing a walk. The rookie southpaw now sports a 2.99 ERA with a 1.12 WHIP and 88:27 K:BB across 14 starts (81.1 innings) this season. Abbott will look for a third straight win in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week against the Angels.

Bounces back versus Pirates
Abbott (7-3) earned the win over the Pirates on Thursday, allowing two runs on four hits over 5.2 frames. He struck out nine.
ANALYSIS
Coming off back-to-back clunkers against the Cubs and Nationals which saw him yield a combined 10 runs over nine innings, Abbott was certainly much sharper in this effort. It looked like he was going to complete six shutout frames when he retired the first two batters of that inning, but the lefty was chased after giving up a home run to Ke'Bryan Hayes and then a double and RBI single. Abbott collected 10 swinging strikes on 98 pitches in the outing.

Hit hard in loss to Nats
Abbott (6-3) took the loss Saturday, coughing up six runs on nine hits and five walks over 5.2 innings as the Reds fell 7-3 to the Nationals. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
While the rookie southpaw was able to keep the ball in Great American Ball Park, five of the nine hits off Abbott were doubles, while the five free passes he issued were a season high. The league could be figuring out the 24-year-old, as he's been tagged for 10 runs in nine innings over his last two starts, but he had compiled a 16-inning scoreless streak immediately prior to that. Abbott will try to get back on track in his next outing, likely to come next weekend in Pittsburgh.

Falters against Cubs
Abbott pitched 3.1 innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on Monday, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five batters.
ANALYSIS
Abbott was handed a 6-1 lead through the middle of the the third frame, but he was unable to convert that to a win. The rookie allowed Chicago to quickly get back into the contest with a three-run bottom of the third, and he was pulled with one out in the fourth after 76 pitches, only 45 of which were strikes. The outing was the shortest of Abbott's career and snapped a string of three straight quality starts. Despite the poor performance, there's no reason for Abbott's fantasy managers to panic -- he came into Monday having tossed two straight scoreless starts and still holds an impressive 2.35 ERA and 1.03 WHIP on the campaign.

Fans nine over six scoreless
Abbott (6-2) earned the win Tuesday at Milwaukee after he struck out nine and allowed seven hits and one walk over six scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
The Brewers had traffic on the bases in every inning, but Abbott induced 15 swinging strikes to help deliver his fifth scoreless start of the season. Since he surrendered six runs over 4.1 frames against Milwaukee on July 7, the rookie left-hander has given up just two runs with an 18:5 K:BB across 20 innings over his past three starts.
Jul 21, 2023
Dominant over eight shutout frames
Abbott (5-2) earned the win Thursday, allowing one hit and two walks over eight scoreless innings against the Giants. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Abbot was spectacular in Thursday's win, allowing only three baserunners while pitching a career-high eight innings. It was the fourth time this season in which he's thrown five or more shutout innings and his second time allowing just one hit. The left-hander has won five of his nine starts to begin his rookie campaign and lowered his season ERA to 2.10 with his dominant outing against the Giants.
Jul 16, 2023
Struggles with power
Abbott (4-2) took the loss Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings against Milwaukee. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Abbott was exceptional outside of a pair of leadoff home runs allowed to Christian Yelich in the first and William Contreras in the fourth. Though he took the loss, Abbott picked up his sixth quality start of the campaign and offered a strong bounceback from his last start, when he gave up six runs against the Brewers on July 7. Through eight starts (47.2 innings), Abbott owns a 2.45 ERA and a 51:16 K:BB but has allowed 1.5 HR/9. His next start is tentatively scheduled to come against the Giants at Great American Ball Park.

Coughs up six runs
Abbott (4-1) allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk over 4.1 innings Friday, striking out six and taking a loss against Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
The Brewers jumped on Abbott with four runs in the first two innings. It was the first major hiccup in the rookie's MLB career after he allowed one run or fewer in five of his first six career starts. After a 17.2-inning scoreless streak to open his career, Abbott has given up 11 runs over his last four outings. He still owns an impressive 2.38 ERA with a 48:14 K:BB across 41.2 frames.

Dominates Padres
Abbott did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk over 7.2 innings against the Padres. He struck out 12.
ANALYSIS
Abbott turned in the best start of his young career Sunday, holding San Diego scoreless through 23 outs but was pulled at 101 pitches after allowing a solo home run to Ha-Seong Kim. The outing set a career high in strikeouts and marked his third straight start fanning eight or more batters, Through six appearances (37.2 innings), Abbott owns a perfect 4-0 record with a 1.21 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and a 42:13 K:BB. He's tentatively scheduled to take on the Brewers next, who strike out the fourth most in MLB and rank 25th in runs per game.

Remains undefeated
Abbott (4-0) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one run on two hits and three walks over six innings against the Orioles. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Abbott continued a stellar start to his big-league career, delivering a third quality start through four outings. The 24-year-old southpaw now has 18 strikeouts in his last two starts (12 innings) after punching out 12 over his first 17.2 innings. Abbott sports a sparkling 1.21 ERA with a 0.94 WHIP and 30:12 K:BB on the campaign. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, tentatively lined up for this weekend against the Padres.
Jun 22, 2023
Career-high 10 strikeouts
Abbott did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three runs on four hits over six innings against the Rockies. He struck out 10.
ANALYSIS
Abbott's run of three straight scoreless starts to begin MLB career came to an end in a hurry Wednesday as the rookie left-hander allowed a leadoff home run to Brenton Doyle to open the game. He would allow two more solo homers on the afternoon but still managed to go six innings while racking up a career-high 10 strikeouts. Abbott also did not walk a batter for the first time in four starts this season.
Jun 11, 2023
Continues scoreless run in win
Abbott (2-0) earned the win Saturday, allowing five hits and three walks over 5.2 scoreless innings against St. Louis. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Abbot got himself into a few jams in the first and fifth innings but managed to work his way out of them unscathed as the Reds provided him with plenty of early run support. The rookie left-hander was especially effective with his four-seamer in the contest, but struggled with the placement of his off-speed pitches throughout, which led to the three walks. Abbot has now won his first two starts for Cincinnati and is yet to allow a run over 11.2 innings, despite issuing seven free passes over that stretch.

Shines in big-league debut
Abbott (1-0) earned the win over Milwaukee on Monday, allowing one hit and four walks while striking out six batters over six scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Abbott's control was a bit shaky, but he gave up just one hit -- a fifth-inning Joey Wiemer double -- in six scoreless frames. The rookie southpaw walked four batters, though some of that may be chalked up to nerves as three of them came to the first six Brewers he faced. Abbott was already expected to get more than just a spot start, and his results Monday should cement that decision. He's tentatively slated to face the Cardinals on the road his next time out.
Jun 5, 2023
Added to roster ahead of debut
The Reds selected Abbott's contract from Triple-A Louisville on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Abbott is slated to make his major-league debut Monday against the Brewers and is expected to receive multiple starts with the big club. The left-hander leads the minor leagues in 2023 with 90 strikeouts, posting a 2.50 ERA and 0.93 WHIP along the way across 54 innings with Double-A Pensacola and Louisville. Abbott's first matchup is a good one, as the Brewers rank last in baseball as a team with a .281 wOBA versus lefties.
Jun 4, 2023
Making MLB debut Monday
The Reds will select Abbott's contract from Triple-A Louisville to have him start Monday's game against the Brewers in Cincinnati, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Hunter Greene will have his next start pushed back because of hip stiffness, so Abbott will get the chance to make his MLB debut as the Reds kick off their series with Milwaukee. According to Goldsmith , the 24-year-old lefty won't merely be in line for a spot start, as it appears Abbott will get a longer-term look in the Cincinnati rotation. Abbott has been sensational in the minors, and while his rookie status and tough home park create some fantasy risk, there's no denying there's potential for him to help in redraft formats during the 2023 campaign.
