Blows save, takes loss
Chapman (6-5) blew a save and was tagged with Thursday's loss to Seattle. He allowed two runs on two hits and a walk without retiring a batter.
ANALYSIS
Chapman, who worked the eighth inning of a close game Wednesday, was given the closing opportunity Thursday but failed to secure a win that would have clinched Texas' first postseason berth since 2016. He was removed after back-to-back singles and a walk (eight pitches, three strikes). Jonathan Hernandez inherited Chapman's runners and nearly got out of jam, but he allowed a two-run, walk-off double to J.P. Crawford. Neither single off Chapman was hard hit, but the performance adds to a stretch of shaky relief from the closer. Over the last 14 outings going back to Aug. 21, Chapman is 1-3 with two blown saves, a 6.23 ERA and 12 walks allowed over 13 innings.

Works eighth inning
Chapman struck one over a scoreless inning in Wednesday's 5-0 win over the Angels.
ANALYSIS
It was a 2-0 game in the eighth inning when manager Bruce Bochy had Chapman enter the game. Bochy had Jose Leclerc in mind for the save, which never materialized after the Rangers scored three times in the top of the ninth. Chapman is having a shaky September and appears to be sharing the closer duty with Leclerc.

Notches save Saturday
Chapman picked up a save against the Mariners on Saturday, walking one batter and allowing no runs over two-thirds of an inning.
ANALYSIS
Chapman threw just five of his 10 pitches for strikes and walked the first batter he faced to put the tying run on base after entering with one out and one on in the ninth. However, the fireballer was able to retire Seattle's final two batters to close out the contest and record his sixth save. Chapman has been shaky in September with a 5.14 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB over seven innings, but he's converted both of his save chances while emerging as Texas' primary ninth-option ahead of Will Smith.
Sep 20, 2023
Works multiple innings
Chapman (6-4) struck out three over 1.2 innings to earn Tuesday's win over the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Texas manager Bruce Bochy, who told Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News on Tuesday afternoon that's trying to avoid using Chapman for more than one inning, did just that. Chapman entered the seventh inning with Boston rallying and shut the door. The reliever managed a perfect eighth before Jose Leclerc picked up the save. The Rangers have blown two recent leads late in games, as Bochy avoided bringing Chapman in before the ninth inning. However, the manager altered course Tuesday, saying "we've got find a way to win ballgames." Bochy took that tack because the Rangers' bullpen has an AL-worst 6.38 ERA since Aug. 16.
Sep 17, 2023
Unused in close game
Chapman was not used in Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Texas held a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth inning, and manager Bruce Bochy had setup reliever Will Smith start the frame. That was a normal tactic, but Smith was pulled with one out after giving up a double and a walk. At that point, instead of bringing in Chapman in a high-leverage spot, Bochy went with Jose Leclerc who gave up two hits that allowed the inherited runners to score. Chapman was well rested, last having pitched Tuesday, and could have been used for a five-out save. However, he's been erratic of late, allowing seven runs (five earned) on five hits (two home runs) and seven walks over the last 5.2 innings.
Sep 10, 2023
Notches fifth save
Chapman earned a save against the Athletics on Saturday, walking two batters and striking out one in a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
With the Rangers having lost seven of eight games and needing a win as they battle for a playoff spot, manager Bruce Bochy deployed both of his co-closers late in a close contest. Will Smith got the final out of the seventh and followed with a scoreless eighth, while Chapman was called upon to close things out in the ninth. The latter made things stressful for Texas fans with a pair of walks but was able to navigate past those to pick up the save. Though they've come 10 days apart, Chapman has picked up the past two saves for the Rangers. However, he hasn't exactly been sharp of late, giving up seven runs (five earned) and posting an 11:9 K:BB over his past 7.2 frames.
Sep 3, 2023
Takes loss Saturday
Chapman (5-4) was tagged with Saturday's extra-inning loss to the Twins. He allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and one walk while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning.
ANALYSIS
Chapman got the final two outs in the top of the ninth inning but surrendered three runs without retiring a batter in the extra frame. It was the second straight outing that resulted in a loss for Chapman, who also has two blown saves over the last six appearances. He had walked just four batters over his first 16 innings after being acquired by the Rangers, but an emergence of control issues are haunting Chapman. He's walked seven, hit a batter and thrown two wild pitches during the recent six-outing stretch.
Aug 30, 2023
Notches fourth save
Chapman gave up a solo home run and struck out one in the ninth inning Tuesday to record his fourth save of the season in a 2-1 win over the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Will Smith's recent struggles -- he's blown his last two save chances and hasn't successfully converted one since Aug. 11 -- have forced manager Bruce Bochy to look elsewhere at the end of games, with Jose Leclerc getting the save Monday before Chapman got his turn Tuesday. The veteran lefty watched rookie Mark Vientos get just enough of a 100.8 mph fastball to send it out to the opposite field, but otherwise Chapman got the job done on an efficient nine pitches (eight strikes). Smith tossed a scoreless eighth to pick up a hold and hasn't been removed completely from the high-leverage mix, but the Rangers could be headed toward a closing committee unless someone seizes the job.
Aug 22, 2023
Blows save Monday
Chapman blew a save against the Diamondbacks on Monday, allowing one run on one hit and one walk while striking out two batters over two innings.
ANALYSIS
With Texas ahead 1-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth, it was Chapman who got the call from the bullpen to close things out. He couldn't do so, allowing a game-tying solo home run to Ketel Marte with one out. Chapman did settle down from there to finish that frame and the 10th without allowing any more runs, and he looked to be in line for the win when Texas scored twice in the top of the 11th. However, Will Smith -- who has been working as the Rangers' primary closer of late -- coughed up three two-out runs to blow a save opportunity of his own. Smith has blown two of five save chances over his past seven outings while posting a 15.19 ERA and 2.25 WHIP, so Chapman could be in line for more ninth-inning opportunities, though there hasn't yet been any word of a changing of the guard between the duo.
Aug 8, 2023
Settles into setup role
Chapman walked one and struck out three over a scoreless eighth inning to record a hold in Monday's 5-3 win over the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Chapman recorded a fourth straight hold, all with him pitching the eighth inning. Texas manager Bruce Bochy has settled on a late-game pattern, where Josh Sborz works the seventh, Chapman the eighth, and Will Smith closes the ninth. That's been the formula for four wins during the Rangers' seven-game winning streak. Chapman's been brilliant since being acquired from Kansas City in late June, striking out 23 with three walks over 12 innings. The lone blemish was a blown save July 24 against division rival Houston.
Aug 2, 2023
Holds lead
Chapman allowed one hit and struck out three over one inning in to earn a hold in Tuesday's 2-0 win over the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Chapman made his first appearance in eight days, showing no rust in a 15-pitch (11 strikes) outing. The left-hander blew up in his previous appearance, giving up three runs and walking two in a loss to the Astros, but that's been the lone blemish since joining the Rangers in late June. Chapman has allowed five hits and two walks while striking out 17 over nine innings in a Texas uniform.
Jul 25, 2023
Gives up lead
Chapman allowed three runs on one hit and two walks while striking out two over one inning in Monday's 10-9 loss to the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Chapman warmed up when the game was tied in the sixth inning in preparation to face the heart of Houston's order -- Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker and Jose Abreu -- in the seventh. After the Rangers plated three in the top half of the frame, Chapman gave it all back with two walks -- his first free passes since joining the Rangers -- and a Chas McCormick home run. This was the first adverse outing for Chapman in a Texas uniform. The left-hander sparkled over his first seven outings, giving up three hits without a walk while striking out 12 over seven innings.
Jul 18, 2023
Logs win Monday
Chapman (5-2) picked up the win over Tampa Bay on Monday. He struck out the side in the ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was the pitcher of record when the Rangers walked off the Rays in the bottom of the inning. It was his first victory in a Texas uniform, and the left-hander remained unblemished for his new club. Chapman, who was recently named a co-closer with Will Smith, has not allowed a run or a walk while striking out 10 over six appearances since coming over from Kansas City.
Jul 16, 2023
Earns first save with new team
Chapman allowed one hit and struck out two over a scoreless ninth inning to record the save in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Chapman threw 10 of 12 strikes to record his first save since joining the Rangers at the end of June. Texas manager Bruce Bochy announced earlier in the day that Chapman will share the closer role with Will Smith, and the manager wasted no time giving the recent bullpen addition his first opportunity. Smith was used as the bridge, getting five outs before Chapman took over. It's unclear how the opportunities will shake out between the two southpaws.
Jul 15, 2023
Will share closer duties with Smith
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Saturday that Chapman and Will Smith will share closer duties based on which hitters are due up, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The comments came after Chapman picked up his first save since joining the Rangers on Saturday versus the Guardians, striking out two while allowing one hit in a scoreless frame. Smith tossed 1.2 scoreless innings before Chapman in the game. The latter is having a terrific season and hasn't done anything recent to lose his job, but Chapman has had an even better year and is arguably a better choice at closer for the American League West leaders. For now, the two left-handers will share the gig.
Jul 4, 2023
Throws clean inning in loss
Chapman struck out one over a scoreless and hitless eighth inning in Monday's 12-11 loss to Houston.
ANALYSIS
Chapman made his second appearance since being acquired by the Rangers and pitched a second scoreless inning. After he set the side down in order in the top half of the frame, the offense produced a run to take the lead in the bottom half. That set up a save situation for closer Will Smith, but he allowed three hits and blew his second save of the season. Coming on the heels of Chapman's perfect inning, Smith picked an inopportune time to blow his second save of the season. However, manager Bruce Bochy quashed any notion of a change in the closer role, telling Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News, "that's not what we're even thinking about right now." Despite the manager's comments, Chapman's history in a closing role could lead him to steal save chances from Smith.
Jul 3, 2023
Makes Rangers' debut
Chapman allowed one hit and struck out two over a scoreless seventh inning in Sunday's 5-3 loss to Houston.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was acquired by Texas last week and made his debut for the new club. He entered a tied game, and it stayed that way after he left. There may be save opportunities down the road for Chapman, who could serve as a right-handed complement to lefty closer Will Smith.
Jun 30, 2023
Traded to Texas
Chapman was traded to the Rangers in exchange for left-handed pitcher Cole Ragans and minor-league outfielder Roni Cabrera on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Chapman will head to Texas after he posted a 2.45 ERA and 1.23 WHIP with 53 strikeouts, eight holds and two saves over 29.1 innings in 31 outings with the Royals this season. He'll join a bullpen with an established closer in left-hander Will Smith and will likely operate in a set-up role with the Rangers. Now that he's seemingly rounded back into form in 2023, Chapman will serve as a significant piece with a Texas team that's in first place in the AL West and set to challenge for a World Series appearance.
Jun 30, 2023
Snags extra-inning win
Chapman (4-2) didn't allow a hit or a walk but gave up an unearned run and struck out two over one inning, earning the extra-inning win over the Guardians on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Jose Ramirez made a straight steal of home in the 10th inning after beginning as the initial runner on second base and moving to third on a groundout. Chapman was in line for the loss until the Royals walked it off with a two-run double from Freddy Fermin. Chapman has been reliable with a 20:6 K:BB and just two runs allowed (one earned) over nine innings in June. He's picked up three of his four wins this month, and he has a 2.45 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 53:20 K:BB over 29.1 innings overall.
Jun 23, 2023
Collects win
Chapman (3-2) struck out the side in a perfect inning to earn the win Thursday over the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Chapman pitched the eighth inning with the game tied 5-5, and the Royals pulled ahead in the ninth. He's allowed just one run and one hit through six innings in June, but he's also walked six while striking out 15. The southpaw continues to be effective in high-leverage spots with a 2.73 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 48:20 K:BB over 26.1 innings while adding two saves, eight holds and two blown saves this season.
Jun 18, 2023
Snags second win
Chapman (2-2) allowed a run on a hit and two walks while striking out three in one inning to earn the win Saturday over the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Chapman struggled versus the heart of the Angels' order, but he limited the damage to a Mike Trout RBI single. The Royals then rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to get the walk-off win. Chapman has given up just two runs over his last 10.2 innings with a 23:11 K:BB over that span. While the elevated walk rate is concerning, he continues to be effective in a high-leverage role for a Royals team that rarely has a lead to protect. He's pitched to a 2.96 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 44:17 K:BB through 24.1 innings this year while adding two saves, seven holds and two blown saves.
Jun 5, 2023
Back in action
Chapman (knee) struck out two in a perfect inning during Sunday's 2-0 win over the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was bothered by a knee issue last week, but he appears fine now. He has a save and three holds while allowing just one run over his last 7.2 innings with a 14:8 K:BB in that span. The southpaw continues to primarily serve as the setup man to Scott Barlow, though the Royals' overall struggles have limited save chances so far. Chapman has a 2.95 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 35:14 K:BB with two saves and seven holds over 21.1 innings.
Jun 3, 2023
Unavailable Friday with knee issue
Royals manager Matt Quatraro said Chapman was unavailable Friday versus the Rockies because his "knee has been barking," Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was unavailable to protect a one-run lead in the eighth inning, and Carlos Hernandez (thumb) and Nick Wittgren failed to do so in his stead. It's a little concerning that the knee issue was enough to keep Chapman off the mound after the Royals just had a two-day break, but it seems like the southpaw is just day-to-day at this time.
May 24, 2023
Earns second save
Chapman picked up the save Tuesday against Detroit. He allowed one walk while striking out two over a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
After blowing each of his last two save opportunities, Chapman bounced back with a hitless ninth to secure his second save of the season. Chapman has allowed just one hit and no runs in his last five appearances (5.0 innings) while striking out 10 batters and was given the save chance Tuesday with Scott Barlow getting the night off after tossing 1.2 innings Monday. Though Chapman has yet to allow a home run through 18.2 innings, he has a tendency to get himself into trouble by handing out walks (5.78 BB/9).
May 5, 2023
Dealt second loss
Chapman (1-2) allowed two runs on a hit and three walks in one-third of an inning, taking the loss and a blown save Thursday versus the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was called upon to preserve a one-run lead in the eighth inning and couldn't get the job done, walking three of the five batters he faced. Amir Garrett was able to induce a double play to limit the damage, but he then struggled in the ninth. Chapman has been scored on in three of his last five outings. He now has a 3.09 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 19:6 K:BB through 11.2 innings while adding a save, a blown save and three holds.
Apr 30, 2023
Collects win Saturday
Chapman (1-1) struck out two in a perfect inning, earning the win Saturday versus the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Chapman faltered a bit in Arizona, allowing three runs (two earned) over 1.1 innings in two appearances, but he got back on track Saturday. The hard-throwing lefty has pitched well this season with a 1.74 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 19:3 K:BB across 10.1 innings. He's added a save and two holds. Chapman continues to be part of the late-inning mix, though Scott Barlow has seen the bulk of the closing duties on the rare occasions the Royals have a lead to protect.
Apr 25, 2023
Surrenders first run of season
Chapman (0-1) allowed a run on a hit and a walk with one strikeout over one inning, taking the loss Monday versus the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Chapman started the year on an eight-inning scoreless streak, but it came to a close Monday. He walked Christian Walker and allowed a single to Gabriel Moreno before Nick Ahmed's fielder's choice plated the decisive run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Chapman still has an excellent 16:3 K:BB with a 1.00 ERA and 0.67 WHIP through nine innings. Unfortunately, the Royals' 5-18 start to the season has allowed him to pick up just one save and one hold. Chapman's usage suggests he's still at least slightly behind the struggling Scott Barlow in the closer hierarchy.
Apr 8, 2023
Gets first save
Chapman picked up the save Saturday against the Giants while striking out two over a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
That's the first save of the year for Chapman, and the first he's picked up as a member of the Royals. The left-hander has appeared in three games thus far in 2023, and he's struck out six hitters over his three innings while not allowing an earned run. It's early, but Chapman looks like the version that made him one of the best closers in baseball not too long ago.
Apr 1, 2023
Strikes out side
Chapman struck out the side in a relief appearance Saturday against Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Chapman breezed through the Minnesota lineup and needed just 13 pitches to pick up his three strikeouts. The southpaw was making his debut with the Royals, and it's tough to beat the results the 35-year-old had during Saturday's appearance. Chapman could be in line for saves for Kansas City in the 2023 season, but he has a bit of an undefined role to begin the year.
Mar 15, 2023
Next appearance Thursday
Chapman had his next scheduled Cactus League appearance pushed from Wednesday to Thursday due to wet conditions, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Rainstorms blew threw Arizona on Wednesday afternoon and the Royals didn't want to risk an on-field mishap with their new high-leverage reliever. Chapman, signed to a one-year, $3.75 million contract in January, has recorded eight strikeouts through four innings this spring.
Feb 28, 2023
Will make Cactus appearance Tuesday
Chapman (mouth) is slated to make his Cactus League debut Tuesday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman had been slated for a bullpen session Tuesday after suffering a split lip and a cracked tooth on a fall at home, but it appears he'll be thrown into game action instead. The veteran reliever inked a one-year deal with the Royals last month and is expected to be in the mix for saves along with Scott Barlow.
Feb 27, 2023
Injures mouth in home accident
Chapman suffered a cracked tooth and a split lip, which required stitches, when he slipped and fell at his house Saturday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman appears to be fine long-term after the unfortunate events and he's expected to throw a bullpen session tomorrow and get in a game soon. The reliever joined the Royals via free agency last month after spending the last six seasons with the Yankees. The left-hander will look to recapture some of his former glory in 2023 after struggling to a career-worst 4.46 ERA and 1.43 WHIP over 36.1 innings in 43 appearances with New York in 2022.
Jan 19, 2023
Set to sign with Royals
Chapman signed a contract with the Royals on Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Marlins and Padres were also reportedly in the running for the veteran reliever. Chapman is coming off a disappointing season which saw him put up a 4.46 ERA with just nine saves, but it's possible he'll get another chance to close in Kansas City. If that happens, obviously it would greatly affect the fantasy value of Scott Barlow.
Oct 9, 2022
Won't make ALDS roster
Chapman will not be included on the ALDS roster after failing to show up for a team workout, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman had turned in scoreless appearances in six of his last seven outings of the regular season, but the team will come down hard on the reliever after he didn't show up to a scheduled team workout. With Chapman out of the bullpen mix, the Yankees will need to rely on Jonathan Loaisiga, Clarke Schmidt and Lucas Lute in high-leverage spots during the ALDS. Manager Aaron Boone has not ruled Chapman out for the entire postseason at this point, per Meredith Marakovits of YES Network.
Oct 3, 2022
Control struggles continue
Chapman (3-4) took the loss against Baltimore on Sunday, allowing two runs on one hit and three walks in one-third of an inning. The only out he recorded was by strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Chapman entered with the scored tied 1-1 in the seventh inning and allowed a leadoff single. He then issued two walks to load the bases before striking out Ryan Mountcastle. The veteran reliever couldn't follow up on that successful out, however, as he next walked Gunnar Henderson to allow the go-ahead run to cross the plate. Altogether, Chapman tossed just 12 of 26 pitches for strikes, and this was the fourth time in his past eight outings that he's walked multiple batters. He's posted an awful 7.1 BB/9 over 35.1 innings on the season, and Bryan Hoch of MLB.com suggests that Chapman is in danger of missing out on the Yankees' postseason roster.
Sep 21, 2022
Earns win in relief
Chapman (3-3) earned the win with a scoreless inning Tuesday against the Pirates. He struck out one and did not walk a batter.
ANALYSIS
In his second appearance since being reinstated from the injured list, Chapman pitched a scoreless eighth inning to earn his third win of the season. The outing likely was intended to just get the veteran some work, but the Yankees pulled off a remarkable comeback capped off by a walkoff grand slam by Giancarlo Stanton to secure Chapman's win. With Clay Holmes looking shakier of late, Chapman may well find himself back in the closer role if he strings together a couple more scoreless outings.
Sep 18, 2022
Works scoreless inning in return
Chapman pitched a scoreless inning against the Brewers on Saturday, allowing one walk and striking out one batter.
ANALYSIS
Chapman missed nearly a month due to a leg infection, but he was reinstated Friday and made his return to the mound Saturday. The veteran reliever was used in a low-leverage situation in the seventh inning, so it appears that the Yankees will ease him back before potentially giving him high-leverage work (though likely not as a closer, since Clay Holmes has taken hold of that role). Though Chapman didn't allow any runs in his return, he threw only nine of 17 pitches for strikes and walked a batter. Control has been been a major issue for Chapman this season -- his 6.5 K/9 is on pace to be his worst mark since 2011 and is fifth-worst among MLB pitchers who have thrown at least 30 innings.
Sep 16, 2022
Reinstated Friday
Chapman (leg) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list prior to Friday's game against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Clay Holmes has a 2.89 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 10:1 K:BB in 9.1 innings since regaining the closer's role in late August. Chapman, who struck out five and walked two in two scoreless rehab innings, may get some save chances, but they could be few and far between.
Sep 14, 2022
Set to return Friday
Chapman (leg) will join the Yankees in Milwaukee on Friday and will be activated for the series opener against the Brewers, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran left-hander appeared in two minor-league games during his rehab assignment earlier this week and is poised to rejoin the big club Friday after being sidelined more than three weeks by a leg infection. Clay Holmes is back in the closer role since he returned from the injured list in late August, and Chapman could fill a setup role upon his activation.
Sep 12, 2022
Begins rehab stint
Chapman (leg) struck out three batters and walked one in a scoreless inning for Double-A Somerset on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Chapman made his first rehab appearance since landing on the injured list with a leg infection at the end of August. The veteran reliever entered in the fourth inning and struck out the side while issuing one walk, and he threw 10 of 16 pitches for strikes. Chapman could return to the Yankees by the end of this week, but he's unlikely to usurp Clay Holmes for the closer role.
Sep 10, 2022
Rehab assignment on tap
Chapman (leg) will begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Somerset on Sunday, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman threw a bullpen session Friday and will return to game action in the minors to close out the weekend. The southpaw expects to need at least one more rehab appearance prior to rejoining the Yankees, so it's possible that he'll remain on the injured list until late next week.
Sep 9, 2022
Bullpen session Friday
Chapman is set to throw a bullpen session Friday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman has been out of action since Aug. 27 when his leg became infected after getting a tattoo. He's yet to face any major setbacks in his rehab process and could very well come off the injured list within a few days.
Sep 5, 2022
Appears ready for mound work
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Chapman (leg) is due to resume throwing off a mound this week, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was placed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 27 after he developed in an infection in his leg, which stemmed from a tattoo he added to his body a few days prior. The left-handed fireballer was cleared to resume throwing over the weekend and appears to have thus far experienced no setbacks, so he'll take another step forward within a couple days by getting back on the mound. Chapman looks like he has a chance at returning from the IL in the minimum amount of time, but he may have to settle for a setup role out of the bullpen with Clay Holmes having recently returned from the IL to take over as the Yankees' primary closing option.
Sep 2, 2022
Resumes throwing
Chapman (leg) threw Friday for the first time since landing on the injured list, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman landed on the injured Saturday due to a leg infection, an issue which developed after he got a new tattoo. He expects to advance to a bullpen session within a day or two. He could potentially add to his nine saves once healthy, but that would require a return to his previous form in addition to a return to full health. It might also require a collapse from Clay Holmes, who returned from a back injury Monday.
Aug 27, 2022
Hits injured list with infection
Chapman was placed on the injured list Saturday with an infection in his leg, Jack Curry of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The issue reportedly stemmed from a tattoo Chapman received. Chapman hasn't pitched in over a week and allowed three runs while walking four batters in his last two appearances, though it's unclear exactly when the problem started bothering him. The back of the Yankees' bullpen is quite beat up at the moment, with Clay Holmes (back) and Scott Effross (shoulder) also out, though Holmes should return Monday and now seemingly has a clearer path to reclaiming closer duties. Lou Trivino or Jonathan Loaisiga could be candidates to record a save over the weekend.
Aug 20, 2022
Wild again Friday
Chapman allowed a run on one hit and two walks over one-third of an inning against Toronto on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Chapman entered in the ninth inning with New York down by three runs, so his struggles didn't do much to impact the outcome of the game. Nonetheless, it's discouraging that the veteran fireballer was unable to find the strike zone -- he threw just five of 14 pitches over the plate and walked the final two batters he faced to load the bases. Chapman was presumed to be in line to regain his closing role when Clay Holmes (back) moved to the injured list Aug. 16, but since that time Chapman has walked four batters and given up three runs over one inning across two appearances. He hasn't been used in a save situation, but it wouldn't be surprising if Scott Effross is called upon the next time a closer is needed given Chapman's ugly past two outings.
Aug 17, 2022
Likely to work in closer committee
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Chapman and Scott Effross will serve as the team's primary closing options while Clay Holmes (back) is on the 15-day injured list, Randy Miller of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
Though the left-handed Chapman has the overwhelming edge over right-handed Effross in terms of closing experience, Boone suggested that a two-pronged approach to the late-inning situations may be the Yankees' best option in the short term. Even so, Chapman still looks like the preferred waiver-wire pickup of the two relievers, especially now that he's seemingly regained top form after a few rocky outings upon his return from an Achilles injury in early July. Though he hasn't picked up any save chances since being activated, Chapman enters Wednesday's game against the Rays having turned in nine straight scoreless appearances while striking out 10 and putting only five runners on base across 9.1 innings.
Aug 17, 2022
Could recapture closer's role
Chapman appears to be the top candidate to step in as the Yankees' primary closer after manager Aaron Boone suggested following Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Rays that Clay Holmes (back) will likely go on the injured list, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Chapman hasn't received any save opportunities since returning July 1 from an IL stint of his own due to Achilles tendinitis, he's started to resemble the dominant end gamer he's been throughout most of his career, especially in his more recent appearances. Dating back to July 26, Chapman has turned in nine straight scoreless outings while delivering an 0.43 WHIP and 10:1 K:BB in 9.1 innings over that stretch. Despite not having held the closer's role since landing on the IL in late May, Chapman is likely still rostered in the majority of fantasy leagues, but Holmes' impending absence means that the 34-year-old lefty should be scooped up immediately if he happens to be sitting on the waiver wire anywhere.

Surging while Holmes struggles
Chapman picked up his first hold, striking out two batters in a perfect inning against the Red Sox on Friday, while Clay Holmes blew his third straight save opportunity in the contest. Yankees manager Aaron Boone suggested after the loss that Holmes could see fewer ninth-inning opportunities, per Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
There had already been hints that Chapman could begin to see closing opportunities again -- he was slated to finish last Friday's game against the Cardinals before Holmes gave up the lead in the eighth inning -- and the continued struggles of the latter make that likelihood stronger. Boone implied that Holmes may have lost his grasp on the ninth-inning role following this Friday's loss, stating, "We'll see. I'm trying to get him in the best positions to be successful. Some nights it'll be the ninth, some nights it'll be having the full go with the pen. We'll keep working with him. Got to get him right and consistent." If Holmes is pulled from the role, Chapman is the most likely candidate to take over closing duties given his extensive history of success (he has 315 career saves) and his recent return to form (he's tossed eight consecutive scoreless innings, posting an 8:1 K:BB and allowing three hits over that stretch).
Aug 6, 2022
Was lined up to close
Chapman would have closed Friday's game against the Cardinals if Clay Holmes had held the one-run lead in the 8th inning, according to manager Aaron Boone, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Holmes came on to pitch the eighth inning with a 3-2 lead and proceeded to give up two runs, denying Chapman a save opportunity in the ninth inning. Chapman has a 6.10 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 14 strikeouts in 10.1 innings across 12 appearances since he returned to action July 2.
Jul 23, 2022
Continues to struggle
Chapman allowed three runs on two hits and one walk while retiring only one batter (via strikeout) Friday versus Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was brought in at a relatively stress-free point with the Yankees up 7-3 in the seventh inning. However, the veteran reliever allowed the Orioles to get right back into the contest, surrendering a single and a walk before serving up a three-run homer to Anthony Santander. Since returning to big-league action July 1, Chapman has given up at least one run in four of eight appearances and has posted an ugly 9.95 ERA and 1.74 WHIP over 6.1 innings. The strikeouts are still there -- he's fanned nine batters over that span -- but he's also issued seven walks and given up two home runs. Clay Holmes picked up his 17th save Friday and may have the full-time closer role locked up, but the Yankees would love to see Chapman figure things out given the loss of top setup man Michael King to a likely season-ending elbow fracture.
Jul 11, 2022
Struggles in loss Sunday
Chapman (0-3) took the loss against Boston on Sunday, allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out two over one inning.
ANALYSIS
Chapman came on in the sixth inning with the game tied 6-6, and he allowed the first three batters he faced to reach base on a single and two walks. The veteran reliever bounced back to retire the next three hitters -- including two by strikeout -- but a Jeter Downs sacrifice fly allowed the go-ahead run to cross the plate, and New York was unable to score again in the contest. Chapman has allowed three runs and has walked five batters over three innings since returning from the IL on July 1. It seems unlikely that he'll regain the closer role until he gets back on track.
Jul 3, 2022
Pitches in seventh inning
Chapman pitched in the seventh inning in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Guardians and walked all three batters he faced. He was charged with two earned runs.
ANALYSIS
Chapman, in his return from a bout with Achilles tendinitis, couldn't find the strike zone. He threw just seven of his 19 pitches for strikes. While Chapman didn't issue a walk during his minor-league rehab assignment, he was all over the place before hitting the IL, and until he starts showing some resemblance to his old self, it will be an easy call for manager Aaron Boone to keep Clay Holmes as the 1a closer.
Jul 1, 2022
To pitch throughout late innings
Chapman is expected to pitch any time in the last three innings for now, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman wasn't at his best in the early part of the season, posting a 3.86 ERA and 15:10 K:BB in 14 innings. He was activated off the injured list Friday after missing nearly six weeks with an Achilles injury and returns to find Clay Holmes established in the closer role, having saved 14 games while posting a 0.49 ERA. Chapman could reclaim his job if he pitches well enough to earn it, but it looks like he won't be used exclusively in the closer role immediately upon his return.
Jul 1, 2022
Comes off IL
The Yankees activated Chapman (achilles) off the 15-day injured list Friday.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Chapman returns to the bullpen for the start of this weekend's series in Cleveland. Soon enough, the lefty figures to be pitching in late-game, high-leverage situations for the first-place Yankees.
Jun 29, 2022
Likely to return Friday
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he's "probably leaning more towards Friday" for activating Chapman (Achilles) from the 15-day injured list, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was sharp Tuesday in what was likely his third and final rehab appearance in the minors. After making a couple outings with Double-A Somerset, he moved up to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and struck out two over a scoreless inning with the club. With Boone noting earlier in the week that Clay Holmes has proven worthy of the closer's role based on how he's performed while Chapman has been out, Laura Albanese of Newsday suggests that Chapman could be eased back into the Yankees' late-inning mix with some lower-leverage opportunities in his initial relief appearances upon coming off the IL.
Jun 27, 2022
Slated for another rehab appearance
Chapman (Achilles) will make a rehab appearance at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman's appearance in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday is expected to be his final rehab outing prior to rejoining the major-league club. Over his first two Triple-A appearances, he struck out two in two scoreless innings. It's possible that the Yankees wait to activate the southpaw from the injured list on Thursday if they don't want him to pitch on back-to-back days, but his return is imminent. Manager Aaron Boone has suggested that Chapman will likely reclaim his role as the Yankees' primary closer, but it wouldn't be surprising to see Clay Holmes continue to see some looks in high-leverage situations.
Jun 27, 2022
Likely to be activated this week
Chapman (Achilles) struck out one over a perfect inning Sunday for Double-A Somerset in his second minor-league rehab appearance.
ANALYSIS
Chapman needed only 11 pitches to retire the side, with his fastball hovering in the 93-to-94 mile-per-hour range and topping out at 98, according to Greg Johnson of The Trentonian. After a pair of clean innings at Somerset over the weekend, Chapman looks like he'll be ready to rejoin the Yankees for their three-game home series with the Athletics that begins Monday. Since Chapman pitched Sunday and the Yankees may not want to make him available on back-to-back days just yet, the club could wait until Tuesday to activate him from the 15-day injured list. Manager Aaron Boone's previous comments have suggested that Chapman will recapture primary closing duties for the Yankees once reinstated, though Clay Holmes could also receive more usage in higher-leverage situations than he had prior to Chapman landing on the shelf.
Jun 25, 2022
Tosses scoreless rehab inning
Chapman (Achilles) completed one scoreless inning for Double-A Somerset on Friday, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.
ANALYSIS
Chapman threw eight pitches in the outing -- five of which were strikes -- and sat at 96-99 mph on his fastball, per Mike Ashmore of MyCJ Sports. This was his first rehab appearance since going on the 15-day injured list May 24. According to Meredith Marakovits of YES Network, Chapman had no issues in the outing and will throw again Sunday. That could put him in line to rejoin the Yankees next week.
Jun 24, 2022
Rehab assignment begins Friday
Chapman (Achilles) will begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Somerset on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Chapman has been on the injured list for a month but has now been cleared to return to game action at the Double-A level. He'll likely be able to rejoin the Yankees following a brief rehab assignment, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him activated early next week. Once Chapman is deemed fully healthy, it's certainly possible that Clay Holmes maintains the closer's role since Holmes has converted 10 of his last 11 save chances while posting a 0.59 ERA and 0.65 WHIP in 15.1 innings over his last 14 appearances.
Jun 21, 2022
Cleared for rehab assignment
Chapman (Achilles) will report to Double-A Somerset this weekend for a rehab assignment, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran left-hander was scheduled to throw live batting practice Tuesday, and it was apparently the final hurdle before being cleared for a minor-league rehab assignment. Chapman should only require a couple games in the minors to get back up to speed, so he could rejoin the Yankees' active roster early next week.
Jun 20, 2022
Facing hitters Tuesday
Chapman (Achilles) is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session Tuesday at the Yankees' spring complex in Tampa, Julia Kreuz of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman has said that he hopes to return from the 15-day injured list without requiring a minor-league rehab assignment beforehand, but the Yankees will see how he fares while facing hitters Tuesday prior to deciding on his next step. Before he was placed on the IL on May 24 with left Achilles tendinitis, Chapman was beginning to lose some security as the Yankees' closer after giving up at least one earned run in five consecutive outings. While Chapman has been out, Clay Holmes has been lights out as the Yankees' closer, but manager Aaron Boone said last week that he prefers to deploy Holmes as a high-leverage reliever rather than a pure ninth-inning man once the club is back to full strength. If that ends up being the case, Chapman could re-emerge as the Yankees' main closer once activated, though Boone likely won't hesitate to feed Holmes some save chances every now and then.
Jun 17, 2022
Will face live hitters soon
Chapman threw fastballs and sliders off the Yankee Stadium mound Tuesday and will next face live hitters, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman hasn't pitched in a game for the Yankees in over three weeks, but he appears to be nearing a return. The veteran closer has said that he hopes to avoid a minor-league rehab assignment, though it's unclear if the organization has the same stance. Hoch reported Wednesday that manager Aaron Boone plans to use fill-in closer Clay Holmes in high-leverage situations -- not necessarily in the ninth inning -- upon Chapman's return, implying that the latter will still have the opportunity to save games upon his activation.
Jun 14, 2022
Tossing from mound Tuesday
Chapman (Achilles) is expected to throw from a bullpen mound Tuesday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman pitched from a bullpen mound Saturday and is slated to do so again Tuesday. He is reportedly pain-free and hopeful that he can return to the Yankees without a minor-league rehab assignment. It's unclear how the club will deploy him after his activation given the dominance of current closer Clay Holmes (nine saves, 0.31 ERA, 29:3 K:BB) this season.
Jun 9, 2022
Bullpen session on tap
Chapman (Achilles) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran left-hander is pain-free and has been playing catch since landing on the injured list with Achilles tendinitis May 24, but Saturday's bullpen will be his first time back on the mound. Chapman will likely require a few bullpen sessions before being considered for activation, but he could be back within the next couple weeks if all goes well.
Jun 8, 2022
Reportedly pain-free
Chapman (Achilles) is no longer experiencing pain, according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, and he could throw a bullpen session near the end of the week, Brian Hall of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman has been playing catch, but he's yet to throw from a mound since going on the injured list May 24. The veteran reliever appears to be close to throwing a bullpen session, so it's feasible that he could be activated within the next few weeks. However, Chapman stated Tuesday that there's not yet a timetable for his return.
May 31, 2022
Plays catch Tuesday
Chapman (Achilles) was cleared to resume playing catch Tuesday, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The activity marks the first notable step forward in the recovery process for Chapman since he was placed on the 15-day injured list a week ago due to left Achilles tendinitis. The Yankees have yet to announce a timeline for Chapman's return, but based on his limited activity to date, he seems unlikely to be activated when first eligible June 7.
May 24, 2022
Placed on injured list
Chapman was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday due to left Achilles tendinitis.
ANALYSIS
Chapman struggled significantly over his last five outings, giving up at least one run in all five and posting a 14.73 ERA and 3.27 WHIP over that stretch. It's unclear to what extent he was battling Achilles issues throughout that time. He'll miss at least 15 days, with the Yankees yet to give a timeline for his return beyond that point. Clay Holmes hasn't given up a run since his first outing of the year and appears to be the top choice to close games until Chapman returns.
May 24, 2022
Move to IL likely
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Chapman (Achilles) is likely to be placed on the 15-day injured list, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Before making any roster move, the Yankees will likely wait and see how Chapman looks Wednesday, the final day that the team would be able to backdate a stint on the IL. At the moment, however, Boone doesn't seem optimistic that Chapman will demonstrate enough progress in his recovery from left Achilles' tendinitis to avoid a two-plus-week absence. With Chapman expected to go on the IL, Clay Holmes looks like the top candidate to pick up saves for the Yankees in the interim.
May 23, 2022
Has tendinitis, may need IL stint
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday that Chapman underwent an MRI on his left Achilles' tendon, which returned negative but revealed tendinitis, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though the Yankees aren't yet deactivating Chapman ahead of Monday's series opener with the Orioles after the MRI detected no structural damage, Boone said that a stint on the 10-day injured list is "still very much in play" for the fireballing reliever, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. With that in mind, enterprising fantasy managers may want to look to pick up Clay Holmes in leagues where he's available, as the 29-year-old had already snagged saves in his last two appearances while Chapman had been faltering of late before sustaining the injury. Even if Chapman ends up avoiding the IL, the Yankees are expected to stay away from him for at least the next couple of days to give his Achilles time to heal.
May 22, 2022
Being treated for Achilles injury
Manager Aaron Boone said after the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against the White Sox that Chapman is receiving treatment for an Achilles injury, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman entered Sunday's matinee with the score tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, and he gave up a leadoff home run to AJ Pollock. After forcing a flyout, the southpaw was visited by a trainer but ultimately remained in the game and gave up another run. In total, Chapman allowed two runs on two hits and a walk while failing to record a strikeout in one-third of an inning to take the loss. While the 34-year-old's injury likely contributed to his struggles Sunday, he's now given up at least one run in each of his last five appearances, and Clay Holmes' strong results this year could allow him to see increased save chances if Chapman continues to struggle.
May 17, 2022
Holds on for ninth save
Chapman picked up the save in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Orioles after pitching the ninth inning, giving up one run on three hits while striking out one.
ANALYSIS
Called upon to protect a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, Chapman made quick work of the first two batters he faced before running into a little trouble with two outs. He surrendered two consecutive singles and then Ryan McKenna ripped a double, scoring Tyler Nevin and narrowing the deficit to 5-4. Chapman was able to get Cedric Mullins to pop out to end the game, stranding two on base and securing his ninth save of the year. After opening the season with 10.1 scoreless frames, the left-hander has allowed a run in four consecutive appearances. Although he's struggled a little recently, the 34-year-old is 9-for-9 on save chances this year and owns a 2.63 ERA and 1.46 WHIP with 15 strikeouts in 13.2 innings.
May 15, 2022
Takes loss Saturday
Chapman (0-1) was tagged with the loss Saturday against the White Sox, allowing one run on two hits and a walk over one-third of an inning.
ANALYSIS
After the Yankees got to White Sox closer Liam Hendriks for a game-tying run in the top of the ninth inning, Chapman was summoned to try to send the game to extra frames. He retired the first batter he faced but then gave up a single, walk and another single as Chicago pulled out the win. Chapman didn't allow any earned runs over his first 12 appearances of the season but has now yielded a run in back-to-back outings. His 1.37 WHIP and 6.9 BB/9 are red flags, but the veteran closer is 8-for-8 in save chances on the campaign, so his job appears safe for now.
May 12, 2022
Secures eighth save
Chapman earned the save after allowing one run on one hit during the ninth inning of Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Blue Jays. He had one strikeout and one walk.
ANALYSIS
The veteran lefty surrendered a leadoff double to Santiago Espinal, who advanced to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from George Springer, but he then retired the next two batters. It's the first run allowed by Chapman this season, and he remains a perfect 8-for-8 in save opportunities. Overall he has a 0.79 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 12:8 K:BB over 11.1 innings.
May 9, 2022
Notches seventh save
Chapman picked up the save Monday against the Rangers after allowing one hit in a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was able to hold off the Rangers in the ninth after New York took a 1-0 lead in the eighth, despite surrendering a two-out single to left. The flamethrower has yet to allow a run on the season and has given up just three hits and seven walks through 11 appearances (10.1 innings).
May 1, 2022
Secures sixth save
Chapman allowed one hit and a walk in a scoreless ninth inning while earning a save over the Royals on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Chapman gave up a single and a walk with two outs in the ninth but escaped with his sixth save in as many chances. The veteran southpaw has a lackluster 11:7 K:BB but has yet to give up a run through 9.1 innings this season. He's recorded a save in five of his last six appearances.
May 1, 2022
Registers fifth save
Chapman saved Saturday's 3-0 win over the Royals, pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Chapman came on in the ninth to protect a 3-0 lead and made quick work of the three Royals he faced, firing seven of 11 pitches for strikes in the process. The 34-year-old is still yet to surrender a run through 8.1 innings while allowing eight baserunners and punching out 11 batters.
Apr 22, 2022
Notches fourth save
Chapman earned a save over Cleveland on Friday with a scoreless ninth inning. He struck out two batters and allowed one hit.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was tagged with a leadoff double by Josh Naylor but still managed to lock down the 4-1 victory. The hard-throwing lefty has now converted all four of his save chances this season and has yet to allow a run through 6.1 innings. He's earned a save in three consecutive appearances, all coming in the last four days.
Apr 21, 2022
Nails down save Wednesday
Chapman secured his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning against the Tigers on Wednesday. He allowed one hit and did not record a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Chapman is now 3-for-3 in save chances this season and his ERA is still spotless. The 34-year-old lefty is working with diminished velocity early on, with his average fastball down a couple ticks, and the strikeouts are down with it. It hasn't really mattered to this point as opponents are still having trouble squaring Chapman up, but it would be nice if he weren't walking such a fine line with the walks.
Apr 20, 2022
Secures second save
Chapman had one strikeout and didn't allow a baserunner during the ninth inning to record the save Tuesday against the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
The veteran left-hander had walked four batters and recorded only one out in his past two appearances, but he had no issues Tuesday and retired the side in order with only nine pitches. Chapman was shaky of late but had no real damage done and he has yet to allow a run or a hit this season while converting both of his save chances.
Apr 15, 2022
Can't close door Thursday
Chapman walked all three batters he faced in the ninth inning of Thursday's game against the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
With the Yankees up 3-0 heading into the ninth inning, Chapman was summoned to finish off the contest. However, the veteran closer was unable to find the strike zone, throwing just four of 16 pitches for strikes and walking all three hitters who came to the plate. Manager Aaron Boone then turned to Michael King, who recorded the first save of his career by stranding the bases loaded. Chapman was thus spared an even uglier stat line, though his fantasy managers will no doubt bemoan the missed opportunity to pick up a save. The fireballer entered the contest having registered a 5:0 K:BB and allowing no hits over three scoreless innings on the season, and given his long history of success, there's little chance that the team will lose confidence in him as a result of Thursday's messing outing. He should remain among the most secure fantasy closers, but given his history of high walk rates, occasional outings like Thursday's are to be expected.
Apr 10, 2022
Picks up first save
Chapman struck out one batter in a perfect inning Saturday to earn a save against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
The veteran closer was used in a non-save situation Friday and threw only 12 pitches, so he was able to take the mound for a second straight game Saturday. Despite a one-out error by Isiah Kiner-Falefa that allowed the tying run to come to the plate, Chapman again needed just 12 tosses -- 10 of which were strikes -- to set Boston down and earn his first save of the campaign. It has been a promising start to the campaign for Chapman, who has struck out three of the seven batters he has faced thus far.
Apr 9, 2022
Tosses scoreless Opening Day frame
Chapman pitched a perfect inning in the Yankees' 11-inning win over Boston on Friday, striking out two.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was summoned in the top of the ninth inning and tasked with keeping the game tied, and he did so with aplomb, throwing eight of 12 pitches for strikes and whiffing two batters in the perfect frame. It was a positive debut for the veteran fireballer after he endured one of the least effective campaigns of his career last season, though he still managed 30 saves in 34 chances. Chapman should earn the vast majority of save opportunities for the Yankees again this season and remains a stable fantasy closer despite being in the downswing of his career.
Mar 24, 2022
May see use in non-save situations
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that he's entertaining the idea of using Chapman more in the eighth inning this season to keep the closer sharp during lengthier periods in between save chances, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. "It will serve him well at times and protect other guys at times," Boone said. "It will help us as a staff and keep Aroldis more regular rather than let him get to five, six days without pitching."
ANALYSIS
More specifically, Boone said he prefers to get Chapman some more work in the eighth inning of tight games, rather than asking the lefty to pitch in low-adrenaline blowouts or post-game bullpen sessions for the sake of staying sharp. While Chapman could still miss out on a few save chances if he's summoned when his team is trailing or tied and the Yankees later take the lead, the prospect of the 34-year-old getting more high-leverage, non-save-situation opportunities could help him avoid the ratio damage many traditional closers often take on when pitching in blowouts. The arrangement may also help Chapman pick up more innings, which would heighten the impact of his strikeouts, ERA and WHIP. He's thrown no more than 60 frames in any of the last six seasons, with his innings counts often lagging behind some of baseball's other ace relievers.
Oct 4, 2021
Collects win Sunday
Chapman allowed a walk and struck out two in a scoreless inning to earn the win Sunday over Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
Baserunners came at a premium in Game 162, with the Yankees' pitching staff allowing his five hits and four walks in the contest. Chapman was able to keep the Rays off the board in the ninth inning, setting up a walkoff single by Aaron Judge to secure the Yankees' spot in Tuesday's AL Wild Card Game versus Boston. Chapman ends the regular season having allowed six runs in his last 26.2 innings since the All-Star break. He has a 3.36 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 97:38 K:BB across 56.1 innings overall while serving as the Yankees' closer.
Sep 27, 2021
Secures another save Sunday
Chapman secured the save Sunday against Boston after tossing a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one walk and one strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Chapman has nailed down each of his last 14 save chances and while he's not been as unhittable as he's been in the past, it's worth noting that he's been dominant when it comes to closing games out. He owns a 2.38 ERA through 12 appearances this month (11.1 innings) and has not given up a run in seven of his last eight trips to the mound.
Sep 25, 2021
Finishes off Red Sox
Chapman gave up a solo home run to Bobby Dalbec in the ninth inning but hung on to secure the save in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
After retiring leadoff hitter Kyle Schwarber on a soft groundout to start the inning, Chapman gave up the homer to Dalbec and then plunked Kevin Plawecki. But he settled down after that, striking out Jose Iglesias and getting Enrique Hernandez to ground out for his 29th save of the season. The Dalbec homer ended Chapman's string of six straight scoreless outings, but the veteran closer still sports a solid 2.61 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 10.1 September innings.
Sep 20, 2021
Secures 28th save
Chapman struck out two batters in a perfect ninth inning and earned a save over the Rangers on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Chapman had no issue finishing off the 4-3 win but the Rangers still made him throw 19 pitches. Dating back to July 20, the hard-throwing southpaw has converted 12 straight save chances, making him 28-for-32 on the year. Chapman has allowed two runs in nine appearances this month and lowered his season ERA to 3.51.
Sep 15, 2021
Converts 27th save
Chapman pitched a perfect ninth inning while striking out two to earn a save in the win over the Orioles on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander made easy work of the Orioles retiring them in order on only eight pitches. The save was his 27th of the season and he has now converted 11 consecutive save opportunities dating back to July 20. Over that span, he has posted a 2.41 ERA while striking out 33 batters in 18.2 innings.
Sep 12, 2021
Notches 26th save
Chapman fired a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit while striking out one to earn the save in the win over the Mets on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Chapman entered the ninth inning with a one-run lead. He gave up a ground-rule double to J.D. Davis, but retired the other three batters to earn the save. It has been rough for the closer lately, as he's allowed runs in four of his last nine appearances. He has a 3.78 ERA and 1.43 WHIP with a stellar 15.3 K/9 in 47.2 innings this season.
Sep 9, 2021
Struggles in non-save situation
Chapman retired two of the five batters he faced in his relief appearance in Wednesday's 6-3 loss to the Blue Jays, allowing a solo home run and issuing two walks.
ANALYSIS
Yankees manager Aaron Boone turned to Chapman in a non-save situation Wednesday after the closer was stuck with the loss his last time out Saturday versus Baltimore, but the lefty fireballer didn't inspire much confidence in what should have been a low-stress appearance. Not only did he serve up a solo shot to Vladimir Guerrero, but Chapman couldn't consistently find the zone, tossing only 10 of his 24 pitches for strikes while also uncorking a wild pitch. Chapman left the contest with two runners on base, but Wandy Peralta spared him of any further damage to his ERA by inducing an inning-ending groundout.
Sep 4, 2021
Stuck with loss against O's
Chapman (5-4) took the loss Saturday, giving up one run on one hit and one walk in the ninth inning as the Yankees fell 4-3 to the Orioles. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The veteran closer struck out Ryan Mountcastle to begin the ninth but watched him take first on a wild pitch, and Chapman then loaded the bases on a single and a walk to set up an eventual game-winning sacrifice fly by Pedro Severino. It's his first loss since July 4, and since the All-Star break Chapman has a 2.20 ERA and 27:11 K:BB through 16.1 innings while converting all nine of his save chances.
Sep 1, 2021
Converts 25th save
Chapman struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 4-1 win over the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Chapman dispatched Shohei Ohtani, Phil Gosselin and Jared Walsh on just 11 pitches to make the Yankees' three-run lead stand. While the southpaw has given up two runs in his last 4.1 innings since returning from elbow inflammation, Chapman remains at the top of the bullpen hierarchy for the Yankees. He's converted 25 of 29 save chances with a 3.68 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 73:31 K:BB through 44 innings this season.
Aug 27, 2021
Locks down 24th save
Chapman saved Thursday's 7-6 triumph over the Athletics, allowing one hit with one strikeout in the ninth.
ANALYSIS
Manager Aaron Boone trusted Chapman to protect a one-run lead and the flamethrower delivered with his first save since returning from the IL, inducing a Matt Olson groundout with a runner on second to end the game. The lefty now owns a 3.77 ERA will look to build on the solid performance moving forward.
Aug 25, 2021
Can't close door Tuesday
Chapman earned a hold Tuesday against Atlanta, pitching two-thirds of an inning and allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out one.
ANALYSIS
The veteran closer notched his first hold of the campaign, but it was nonetheless a discouraging outing. Chapman was brought in to protect a three-run lead in the ninth inning and had to be rescued by Wandy Peralta, who got the final out with the bases loaded to notch his fifth save. Chapman struggled mightily with his control, throwing only 12 of 26 pitches for strikes and issuing two walks. Since returning from the injured list Aug. 18, Chapman has not registered a save, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks across 2.1 frames.

Struggles in return
Chapman allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning against Boston on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The veteran closer made his first appearance since going on the injured list with an elbow issue Aug. 7. He was summoned in the ninth inning with the Yankees up by four runs, but he couldn't get through the frame. Chapman served up a home run to Hunter Renfroe before allowing two additional baserunners to bring the tying run to the plate. New York then turned to Lucas Luetge, who notched his first save in nine years. Despite the rough outing, Chapman is unlikely to face any challenges to his closer role, especially since he has converted each of his past seven save chances.

Back from IL
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Chapman (elbow) will be activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees were satisfied with how Chapman has bounced back from a bout with left elbow inflammation in his recent throwing sessions, so he'll rejoin the active roster without requiring a minor-league rehab assignment beforehand. Prior to getting shut down Aug. 7, Chapman had been in top form since the All-Star break after a rough finish to the first half. In 10 appearances dating back to mid-June, Chapman posted a 0.90 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 16:6 K:BB while going 7-for-7 in save opportunities across 10 innings. With the Yankees seemingly satisfied with his health, Chapman should take back closing duties from Jonathan Loaisiga right away.

May not need rehab stint
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Chapman (elbow) may not need to go on a rehab assignment before rejoining the Yankees, Justin Shackil of SiriusXM reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman threw long toss Saturday with positive results, and a recent MLB.com report indicated that the team is hopeful he can return as soon as this week. The veteran closer last pitched Aug. 5, but he isn't likely to need much time to ramp back up given that he hasn't thrown more than one inning in an outing this season. His return should be a boon to a Yankees bullpen that has lost a ninth-inning lead multiple times during Chapman's absence.
Aug 14, 2021
Could return when eligible
Chapman (elbow) is traveling with the Yankees on their current road trip, and the the team is hopeful that he can be activated when first eligible to come off the IL early next week, per MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Chapman underwent an MRI last weekend, and the results showed no structural damage to his left elbow. As such, there is hope that the discomfort that sent him to the injured list is not an indication of a significant injury. Chapman's replacements have largely struggled since the veteran closer last pitched Aug. 5, with each of Chad Green, Jonathan Loaisiga and Zack Britton suffering at least one blown save over that span.
Aug 7, 2021
MRI reveals no damage
Chapman underwent an MRI on Saturday which showed no damage to his elbow ligament beyond typical wear and tear, Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman hit the injured list earlier in the day due to elbow inflammation, and it looks for now as though he isn't dealing with anything worse than that. The Yankees have yet to specify when he's expected to return, but it looks as though he'll have a chance at a relatively brief absence. Chad Green and Jonathan Loaisiga are tied for second on the team with three saves apiece and could be the top candidates for saves in his absence.
Aug 7, 2021
Lands on 10-day IL
Chapman was placed on the 10-day injured list due to left elbow inflammation Saturday, retroactive to Aug. 6.
ANALYSIS
Chapman had picked up saves in each of his last six outings, but he apparently developed an elbow issue. It's not yet clear whether he'll be forced to spend more than the minimum of 10 days on the injured list, but Chad Green and Jonathan Loaisiga will likely be in consideration for ninth-inning duties while Chapman is sidelined.

Secures 23rd save
Chapman earned the save over the Mariners on Wednesday by tossing a scoreless frame in which he gave up one hit and one walk while striking out one.
ANALYSIS
Chapman's outing didn't come without some stress -- Seattle got the tying run on base with a two-out single -- but the veteran closer was able to close out the contest and notch his 23rd save. His job appeared to be at least mildly in question after he gave up nine runs across 1.1 frames between June 23 and July 4, but Chapman has rebounded since then with an 11-inning stretch during which he has surrendered just one run while collecting 19 strikeouts. Walks remain a concern, however, as the left-hander has issued eight free passes in the 11-inning span and has posted a less-than-ideal 6.4 BB/9 on the season.
Aug 1, 2021
Locks down 22nd save
Chapman pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts to earn the save in Sunday's 3-1 win over Miami.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old stretched his scoreless streak to six innings, and he's picked up five saves in that span. Chapman is 22-for-26 in save chances with a 3.72 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 67:27 K:BB through 38.2 innings this year. He remains the No. 1 option in the ninth inning for the Yankees.
Jul 30, 2021
Converts 21st save
Chapman struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Friday's 3-1 win over Miami.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees' closer has converted saves in his last four appearances, and he's allowed just one run in his last nine innings. Chapman had a rough stretch from late June to early July, but he's effectively put that behind him. He is 21-for-25 in save chances with a 3.82 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 65:27 K:BB through 37.2 innings overall.
Jul 29, 2021
Rings up save No. 20
Chapman walked one and struck out two in a scoreless 10th inning Wednesday to record his 20th save of the season in a 3-1 win over the Rays.
ANALYSIS
He fired only eight of 14 pitches for strikes, but Chapman's dominance continues to compensate for the wavering control. On the season, the veteran closer has a 3.93 ERA and 64:27 K:BB through 36.2 innings while converting 20 of 24 save chances.
Jul 28, 2021
Notches 19th save
Chapman walked one and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to record his 19th save of the season in a 4-3 win over the Rays.
ANALYSIS
The veteran closer seems to have turned things around after his rough stretch in late June and early July, converting his last three save chances and posting a 1.29 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 13:6 K:BB over his last seven innings. Chapman's inconsistent control remains a bit of a worry, but as long as he's striking out nearly two batters an inning, he can get away with the occasional free pass.
Jul 24, 2021
Shuts down Boston
Chapman allowed one hit and one walk but struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Saturday against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was called upon to protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning. He made things interesting by surrendering a walk and double with two outs but managed to strike out Enrique Hernandez to earn his 18th save of the season. Though he struggled mightily in a three-appearance stretch in late June and into July, Chapman has now allowed only one earned run across his last six innings of work. He's also locked in each of the Yankees last two saves and appears to have a clear handle on the closer role once again.
Jul 21, 2021
Picks up save Tuesday
Chapman recorded the save Tuesday against the Phillies after allowing one run on one hit while fanning three in one inning.
ANALYSIS
Chapman struck out the side and needed 15 pitches (12 strikes) to clinch his 17th save of the season, but it wasn't a clean inning since he also allowed a ninth-inning homer to Andrew McCutchen. As such, Chapman's three-game streak of scoreless outings came to an end, and he is far from being the dominant, unhittable reliever he had been in past years. He owns an inflated 9.00 ERA across five appearances (four innings) this month.
Jul 4, 2021
Brutal stretch continues
Chapman (5-3) blew a save and took the loss in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Mets. He was charged with three runs on one hit and one walk while failing to record an out.
ANALYSIS
Chapman served up a solo shot to Pete Alonso to tie the game before hitting Michael Conforto with a pitch and walking Jeff McNeil. Both of those Mets came around to score after Lucas Luetge entered the game. In his last three appearances, Chapman has allowed nine earned runs in just 1.1 innings, shooting his ERA up to 4.71 on the year. He's blown four of his last nine save opportunities dating back to May 23.
Jul 1, 2021
Implodes in ninth Wednesday
Chapman allowed four runs on one hit and three walks while retiring only one batter Wednesday against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Chapman came on in the ninth inning with the Yankees holding a four-run lead, so he wasn't tagged with a blown save. Nonetheless, the outing was a huge letdown form the veteran closer, as he hurled only 10 of 24 pitches for strikes and loaded the bases on three walks. Jared Walsh made Chapman pay for his wildness, crushing a grand slam to tie the game 8-8. After a dominant start to the campaign, Chapman has struggled over his past eight appearances, allowing 12 runs (11 earned) over 5.2 frames. He has given up three long balls and posted a 6:8 K:BB over that stretch.
Jun 24, 2021
Earns win after blowing save
Chapman (5-2) blew the save but took the win against the Royals on Wednesday, pitching one inning and allowing two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two.
ANALYSIS
The flame-throwing closer couldn't protect a one-run ninth-inning lead, as he walked in the game-tying run after loading the bases and subsequently allowed the go-ahead run to score on a single. He avoided a loss and earned his fifth win, however, as a result of the Yankees responding with two runs in the bottom of the ninth. While Chapman ultimately came out on top, the rough outing continued a recent subpar seven-game stretch during which he has taken two blown saves while posting a 11.81 ERA and 3.19 WHIP across 5.1 frames.
Jun 20, 2021
Earns save despite fingernail issue
Chapman allowed no hits and two walks in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save against the Athletics on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Chapman revealed after Sunday's game that he recently broke the fingernail on his middle finger, and it hasn't yet fully healed, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. The issue has mostly impacted the release on his fastball, but he's been able to pitch on each of the last two days, and he's earned a pair of saves in those appearances. The southpaw has posted a 1.98 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 16 saves in 27.1 innings this season.
Jun 20, 2021
Lights up radar gun, nabs 15th save
Chapman allowed a run on two hits and a walk while striking out two en route to collecting his 15th save of the season in Saturday's 7-5 win over the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
With the Yankees holding a three-run lead heading into the top of the ninth, Chapman was called upon for a relatively low-stress save situation. He ended up allowing a run and put the potential game-tying runs on base with two outs, but Chapman was able to put away Matt Chapman to end the threat. The fireballing right-hander's final fastball of the day clocked in at 103.4 miles per hour, marking the fastest pitch recorded in the majors this season, according to Bryan Hoch and Martin Gallegos of MLB.com.
Jun 17, 2021
Collects 14th save
Chapman gave up two hits and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his 14th save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Vladimir Guerrero and Teoscar Hernandez led off the ninth with back-to-back hits, but Chapman buckled down and escaped the jam with a little help from the umpires. The veteran closer sports his typically dominant numbers with a 1.78 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 45:11 K:BB through 25.1 innings on the year.
Jun 16, 2021
Secures 13th save
Chapman had a strikeout and didn't allow a baserunner during the ninth inning to record the save in Tuesday's victory versus the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Chapman surrendered five runs (four earned) on five hits while recording only one out in his past two appearances, though he rebounded Tuesday with a perfect frame. The veteran southpaw has otherwise been fantastic in 2021 with a 1.85 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 44:11 K:BB while going 13-for-15 in save chances.
Jun 13, 2021
Suffers loss Saturday
Chapman (4-2) was tagged with the loss against Philadelphia on Saturday, allowing one unearned run on one hit while retiring one batter.
ANALYSIS
After suffering a blown save and his first loss by giving up four runs Thursday against the Twins, Chapman took the loss again Saturday, though the circumstances were much different this time around. He came on in the 10th inning with the inherited runner on second base and was done in by his own throwing error and an infield single that allowed the winning run to cross the plate. Chapman remains one of the elite closers in the game despite the back-to-back rough outings.
Jun 11, 2021
Melts down against Twins
Chapman (4-1) was tagged with the loss and a blown save after allowing four runs without recording an out Thursday against the Twins. He gave up four runs on four hits, including two home runs, and couldn't record a single out.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was unable to retire anyone Thursday, as he allowed Josh Donaldson and Nelson Cruz to homer, and he also gave up singles to Jorge Polanco and Willians Astudillo. The star reliever ended a streak of five straight games without allowing a run, but he should bounce back sooner than later and his role as the team's closer shouldn't be under any sort of threat.
Jun 2, 2021
Collects 12th save
Chapman walked two and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Wednesday against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was called upon to maintain a one-run lead. He walked the first two batters he faced, but then retired three in a row to record his 12th save. Chapman is extremely secure in his role as closer and has also delivered excellent results, as he's allowed only one earned run across 22 innings while striking out 42.
May 29, 2021
Hurls scoreless frame in return
Chapman (illness) tossed a scoreless inning against Detroit on Friday, allowing a walk and notching one strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Chapman missed two days while suffering from a non-COVID-19 illness, but he was able to get back on the mound Friday. The fireballer entered a tie game in the bottom of the ninth inning and immediately issued a walk, though the Tigers were unable to get a run across the plate. New York then took a lead in the 10th frame, but manager Aaron Boone opted against putting Chapman on the mound for a second inning, and Detroit ultimately pulled the game out with a pair of runs against Justin Wilson. Chapman should be good to go moving forward as he looks to build upon a season in which he has secured 11 saves while registering a 0.45 ERA and 38:9 K:BB across 20 innings.
May 27, 2021
Battling illness
Chapman has been unavailable the last two days due to illness, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Aaron Boone was hopeful that Chapman would be able to return Friday. He also noted that Chapman has tested negative for COVID-19, but that he may not fly with the team to Detroit out of precaution. Chad Green picked up a save in Chapman's place Thursday.
May 23, 2021
Allows first run of 2021
Chapman (4-0) allowed one run on a hit and a walk while striking out one in one inning to earn the win against the White Sox on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was charged with a blown save since he gave up his first run of the season to tie the game in the top of the ninth inning Sunday. However, the Yankees scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Chapman his fourth win of the 2021 campaign. He's now posted a 0.47 ERA and 0.74 WHIP in 19 innings this season.
May 21, 2021
Picks up third win
Chapman (3-0) pitched a scoreless ninth inning Friday against the White Sox, allowing one walk with zero strikeouts while picking up the win.
ANALYSIS

May 20, 2021
Locks down 11th save
Chapman fired a scoreless inning to pick up the save against the Rangers on Thursday, allowing one walk while striking out two.
ANALYSIS
Another game, another unbeatable performance by Chapman. The southpaw has still yet to give up a run or blow a save opportunity this season, rendering him a top-ranked closer. He's given up just five hits and six walks while whiffing 36 batters across 17 innings of work.
May 19, 2021
Racks up 10th save
Chapman gave up a hit and struck out three in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to record his 10th save of the season in a 7-4 win over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
It's the sixth time in 16 appearances this season Chapman has gotten all his outs via strikeout. The veteran closer has been almost untouchable so far, and he has yet to give up an earned run or blow a save while piling up a 34:5 K:BB through 16 innings.
May 13, 2021
Picks up second straight save
Chapman pitched a clean ninth while striking out a batter en route to earning his ninth save of the season in a 1-0 win over the Rays on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was reported to have been pitching through a fingernail issue after he picked up a save in Tuesday's win over the Rays and did not appear to be bothered by it at all after manager Aaron Boone confirmed he was "fine." The hard-throwing lefty has looked as dominant as ever in his age 33 season, as he's this in Major League Baseball with nine saves and has yet to allow a run while sporting a 31:5 K:BB over 15 innings.
May 11, 2021
Pitches through fingernail issue
Manager Aaron Boone said Chapman is "fine" after pitching through a fingernail issue during Tuesday's win over the Rays, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. The left-hander recorded the save by delivering a scoreless ninth inning with one strikeout and one walk.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old notched his eighth save of the season despite the fingernail issue cropping up, and he has yet to blow a save opportunity this season. Chapman's availability going forward shouldn't be in doubt, but it's worth keeping an eye on his status the next couple days. He has yet to allow a run with a 30:5 K:BB through 14 innings.
May 9, 2021
Secures second win
Chapman (2-0) allowed one hit and no walks while striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the win against the Nationals on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Chapman gave up an unearned run in the 10th inning of Saturday's game, but he earned his second win of the season Sunday by preserving the tie game in the ninth inning before Giancarlo Stanton hit a walkoff single. The southpaw has now posted a 0.62 WHIP and 29:4 K:BB in 13 scoreless innings this season.
May 5, 2021
Converts save Wednesday
Chapman pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 6-3 win over Houston. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Chapman has been nearly unhittable all season, as he's allowed just two hits and three walks in 11 innings. The Yankees' closer has yet to give up a run, and he owns a sparkling 26:3 K:BB in 11 appearances. He remains perfect in save chances, with all seven coming in his last eight outings.
May 2, 2021
Earns save Sunday
Chapman struck out two in a perfect ninth inning to earn the save against the Tigers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Chapman tossed a perfect ninth inning against Detroit on Saturday, and he replicated his performance Sunday to earn his sixth save in his last seven appearances. The southpaw has posted a 0.50 WHIP and 24:3 K:BB in 10 scoreless innings across his first 10 appearances of the season.
May 1, 2021
Secures fifth save
Chapman recorded two strikeouts and didn't allow a baserunner during the ninth inning to earn the save during Saturday's 6-4 win over Detroit.
ANALYSIS
The veteran lefty made quick work of the Tigers as he needed only seven pitches to retire the side in order. Chapman has converted all five save opportunities this season and has a 22:3 K:BB with only two hits allowed through nine innings.
Apr 23, 2021
Locks down fourth save
Chapman pitched a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout to earn the save in Friday's 5-3 win over Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Chapman has allowed just two hits and three walks over seven innings to start 2021. He's racked up 17 strikeouts -- Friday was the first time this year he didn't fan multiple batters in an outing. The Yankees' closer has four saves and a 1-0 record across seven appearances.
Apr 23, 2021
Tallies third save
Chapman struck out three and allowed one walk in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Thursday against Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Chapman had a three-run cushion in the ninth inning and had no trouble slamming the door to earn his third save of the season. He's completely dominated his opponents early on, piling up 16 strikeouts across only six innings of work while allowing only two hits and no earned runs.
Apr 21, 2021
Racks up second save
Chapman walked one and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to record his second save of the season in a 3-1 win over Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
The flamethrowing lefty hasn't had many saves chances yet due to the Yankees' struggles, but Chapman has been all but untouchable to begin the season. He has yet to give up a run through five innings over five appearances with a 13:2 K:BB.
Apr 12, 2021
Notches first save
Chapman gave up a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Monday to record his first save of the season in a 3-1 win over the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Randal Grichuk led off the ninth with a double, but Chapman let him get no further and needed only 12 pitches (nine strikes) to nail down the save. The southpaw has been absolutely filthy to begin the season, keeping a 0.00 ERA through four innings, and Cavan Biggio's fly out Monday was the first batter Chapman has set down on something other than a strikeout.
Apr 11, 2021
Strikes out side in ninth
Chapman (1-0) struck out the side and allowed one hit during his lone inning of work Sunday against the Rays, earning his first win of the season.
ANALYSIS
Chapman pitched the ninth with the game tied 4-4, and he was absolutely filthy -- despite allowing a two-out double to Mike Zunino, Chapman struck out the side and threw 10 of his 13 pitches for strikes. Chapman has yet to record a save this season, but he has pitched three straight scoreless outings while fanning nine across three innings of work.
Apr 5, 2021
Dominates non-save situation
Chapman walked one batter in a scoreless ninth inning during Monday's 7-0 win over Baltimore. He struck out three batters.
ANALYSIS
After serving a two-game suspension to start the year, Chapman looked impressive in his 2021 debut. He threw 13-of-19 pitches for strikes and made fairly quick work of the heart of Baltimore's lineup. Of course, he'll usually only work in save situations moving forward.
Apr 4, 2021
Available to pitch Sunday
Chapman will be able to make his season debut Sunday against the Blue Jays after completing his two-game suspension.
ANALYSIS
Chad Green ended up picking up the save in Saturday's 5-3 win, but Chapman should step back into his familiar role as closer now that he's served the suspension he received last September for throwing at the Rays' Mike Brosseau. Chapman only pitched 11.2 innings in the abbreviated 2020 campaign, but he was excellent as usual when he was available, giving up four earned runs on six hits and four walks while striking out 22.
Mar 23, 2021
Spring work to pick up
Chapman (suspension) is slated to pitch every other day through the end of spring training, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran closer tossed a scoreless inning in Monday's Grapefruit League game against Philadelphia, allowing one walk while striking out a pair. He has not allowed a run or a hit while posting a 5:1 K:BB in spring play, though he has hurled only four innings. It appears Chapman will get more work going forward as he prepares for his 12th big-league campaign.
Feb 23, 2021
Experimenting with splitter
Chapman (suspension) will try out his splitter during spring training and plans to incorporate the pitch into his arsenal more frequently this season, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman threw the splitter only three times last season, but he believes that he can effectively make it a more consistent part of his arsenal moving forward. "I believe it's definitely a pitch for me; I feel that I've incorporated that into my pitch mix," Chapman said through an interpreter. "I believe I'm going to use it more, unlike the changeup where I used it just a couple of times here and there. I feel really good with it." If he's able to find success with the pitch, Chapman could be even more dominant than he has already proven to be as one of MLB's top closers.
Nov 19, 2020
Suspension reduced
Chapman's suspension was reduced from three games to two Thursday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was issued his three-game suspension in early September after throwing a fastball over Mike Brosseau's head. However, he'll only have to miss two games at the beginning of the 2021 season following his appeal. Zack Britton could handle any save chances during Chapman's brief absence, although the suspension shouldn't have an impact on the southpaw's season-long fantasy value.
Oct 9, 2020
Secures save in Game 4
Chapman allowed zero hits and had two strikeouts and one walk over 1.1 innings to earn the save in Thursday's Game 4 win over the Rays.
ANALYSIS
The veteran left-hander entered with a three-run lead during the eighth inning and the Yankees tacked on another run, so he came back for the ninth with a comfortable cushion. It was Chapman's first appearance of the series and second of the playoffs, and manager Aaron Boone figures to be aggressive in his bullpen usage during Friday's winner-take-all Game 5.
Oct 1, 2020
Tosses two innings for win
Chapman threw the final two innings of the Yankees' win Wednesday in Game 2 of the Wild Card Series against Cleveland, striking out four while allowing just one hit and zero runs.
ANALYSIS
Chapman hadn't been asked to record more than three outs in any of his 13 regular-season appearances, but he was called upon with men on first and second and none out in a tie game in the bottom of the eighth this time around. He immediately relinquished the lead, allowing an RBI single to Cesar Hernandez on his very first pitch, but a strikeout and a double play got him out of the inning without further damage. After the Yankees scored a pair of runs to take the lead in the top of the ninth, he finished the job and the series in the bottom of the inning, recording one groundout and three strikeouts (with one batter reaching first on a passed ball). He'll need a rest after the extended outing, but he'll get one, as Game 1 of the ALDS against the Rays won't take place until Monday.
Sep 21, 2020
Won't face suspension this year
Chapman's hearing regarding his appeal of a three-game suspension will not take place until next season, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The decision may be pandemic-related, as the league is unable to gather together all the witnesses. Chapman was initially hit with a three-game ban for throwing near Mike Brosseau's head back on Sept. 1, but if he does end up missing any time, it will be at the start of next season rather than during the final week of a playoff race. That's a big boost for both the Yankees and for those who have Chapman on their fantasy teams this season.
Sep 20, 2020
Suspension may be delayed into 2021
Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated Saturday that Chapman could have a second hearing on the appeal of his suspension, potentially delaying it until next season, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was suspended three games in early September for throwing a fastball over Mike Brosseau's head near the end of a win over Tampa Bay. The veteran subsequently appealed the suspension, and it looks as though the matter will take longer than anticipated to be resolved. If Chapman's potential suspension does carry over to next season, that is good news for fantasy managers who have rostered Chapman and could otherwise be faced with losing the closer for nearly half of the final week of the campaign.
Sep 18, 2020
Notches third save
Chapman gave up a hit and struck out two in two-thirds of an inning Thursday to record his third save of the season in a 10-7 win over the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Jonathan Holder started the ninth inning protecting a 10-3 lead, but after he got tagged for two runs and loaded the bases with one out, Chapman got the call and immediately gave up a two-run single to Bo Bichette. The Yankees closer then settled down and fanned the next two batters to end the game. Chapman appears to be back in his usual form -- he's struck out multiple hitters in six straight appearances, posting a 1.59 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 13:2 K:BB through 5.2 innings over that stretch.
Sep 14, 2020
Earns second save
Chapman fired one scoreless inning Sunday as he earned the save against the Orioles. He allowed no baserunners while striking out two.
ANALYSIS
Although he was pitching on a second consecutive day, Chapman remained effective with another scoreless outing. The hard-throwing southpaw now carries a 4.50 ERA over eight innings during his abbreviated 2020 season. Chapman's appeal of a three-game suspension that he received earlier this month is expected to be heard Monday, so it's possible that he could see limited work over the coming week.
Sep 13, 2020
Suspension appeal coming Monday
Chapman's appeal of the three-game suspension he received earlier this month is expected to be heard Monday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman received the three-game ban after throwing a pitch near the head of the Rays' Mike Brosseau in a Sept. 1 game. If Chapman's suspension isn't reduced at all and he's forced to sit out beginning with Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays, fantasy managers may have a tough time justifying keeping him active during the Yankees' six-game week.
Sep 10, 2020
Strikes out side
Chapman pitched a perfect ninth inning against Toronto on Wednesday, striking out all three batters he faced in a non-save situation.
ANALYSIS
Chapman has struggled at times to shake the rust from a late start to the season, but he looked dominant on the mound Wednesday, needing 12 pitches to retire the Blue Jays on a trio of strikeouts. The veteran has converted only one of three save opportunities this season, but he has struck out 10 batters in six innings and has a firm hold on the closer job in New York.

Appealing suspension
Chapman is appealing his three-game suspension, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was issued a three-game suspension Wednesday for throwing above Mike Brosseau's head Tuesday, but he called the punishment "a little harsh." As a result of the appeal, he'll be available out of the Yankees' bullpen until a final decision is made by the league.

Suspended three games
Chapman was issued a three-game suspension Wednesday, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman threw a fastball over Mike Brousseau's head Tuesday as he recorded the save against the Rays, and he'll miss time as a result. It's unclear whether he plans to appeal the suspension. Assuming he misses time, Zack Britton could take on save chances during his brief absence.

Locks down first save
Chapman struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Tuesday to record his first save of the season in a 5-3 win over the Rays.
ANALYSIS
In his fourth appearance since coming off the COVID-19 list, Chapman needed only 13 pitches (eight strikes) to shut down Tampa. He did sail a fastball over Mike Brosseau's head, re-igniting the long-simmering tensions between the teams and potentially setting the stage for a volatile series finale Wednesday, but Chapman only received a warning and shouldn't face any additional discipline.

Earns win Saturday
Chapman (1-1) pitched a clean ninth inning Saturday while getting all three outs on just 14 pitches as he earned his first victory of the season.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was called upon to enter the game in the top of the ninth to preserve a 1-1 tie after Adam Ottavino surrendered a game-tying solo home run to Wilson Ramos the prior inning. After allowing a combined three runs in his first two outings, Chapman pitched a quick 1-2-3 inning which led to the Yankees walking off in the bottom half of the frame. Despite his early struggles, Chapman should have a firm grasp on the closer's role despite Zack Britton (hamstring) being close to a return.
Aug 29, 2020
Charged with loss Friday
Chapman (0-1) allowed two runs on one hit and one walk while failing to record an out as he was charged with the loss in Game 2 of Friday's doubleheader against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Chapman took the mound for the first time since Aug. 17, but he allowed a walkoff home run, resulting in a loss and blown save. The southpaw missed the start of the season after testing positive for COVID-19, but he should still have a relatively firm hold on the closer's role for the Yankees.

Fans two in season debut
Chapman tossed one inning in Monday's win over the Red Sox, allowing one run on two hits while striking out two.
ANALYSIS
Chapman did show a bit of rust in his first outing of the season -- he gave up a triple and a double to yield one run -- but his fastball was as overpowering as ever, hitting 101 mph (per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com) on the veteran's final pitch. Chapman had no issue keeping the ball in the zone, throwing 14 of 20 pitches for strikes and punching out his final two batters. Despite the 32-year-old entering in a four-run game Monday, Chapman is solidly in control of New York's closer role, so his next outing could very well be in a save situation.
Aug 17, 2020
Officially activated
Chapman (illness) was officially activated from the injured list as expected Monday.
ANALYSIS
Chapman is finally ready to go after spending the first few weeks ramping up, making up for lost time after a positive COVID-19 test cost him most of summer camp. His return will push Zach Britton back into a setup role.
Aug 16, 2020
Returning Monday
Chapman (illness) will return from the injured list Monday, James Wagner of The New York Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman missed much of camp due to COVID-19, but he's been throwing bullpens for about two weeks and is now ready to go. He'll presumably immediately reclaim his closing role upon his return, though there's a chance Zach Britton still earns another save or two early on if Chapman isn't ready to throw on back-to-back days right away.
Aug 15, 2020
Could return Sunday
Chapman (COVID-19) could join the active roster as soon as Sunday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman unofficially threw 25 pitches in a simulated game Friday and topped out at 98 mph, per Conor Foley of the Scranton Times-Tribune. The sim game was the second this week for the veteran closer, who has yet to pitch in a regular-season game in 2020 after testing positive for COVID-19 during summer camp. Despite Zack Britton's success in the closer role, Chapman is expected to slide back into ninth-inning duties immediately upon his return.
Aug 12, 2020
Another sim game scheduled
Chapman (illness) will throw another simulated game Friday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
A battle with COVID-19 cost Chapman most of summer camp. He's been back with the team for nearly two weeks and is presumably closing in on his return, though the Yankees have yet to announce exactly when they expect that to happen.
Aug 12, 2020
Hurls 25 pitches in sim game
Chapman took part in a simulated game at the Yankees' alternate training site Tuesday, unofficially throwing 25 pitches and facing eight batters, Conor Foley of the Scranton Time-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Foley, Chapman walked one batter and struck out two during his appearance. The outing against live batters represents another step in Chapman's progression to returning to game action after he tested positive for COVID-19 in July. The Yankees have not provided a timeline for Chapman's return, but he should resume his customary closer role upon joining the active roster.
Aug 9, 2020
Sim game coming Tuesday
Manager Aaron Boone confirmed Chapman (COVID-19) will face hitters in a live throwing session Tuesday at the Yankees' alternate training site, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Based on how Chapman fares in Tuesday's workout, Boone said the Yankees will map out the remainder of the reliever's throwing program, which should help pinpoint a potential target date for his season debut, per Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. While Chapman has been recovering from his positive test for COVID-19, Zack Britton has stepped in as the Yankees' closer, going a perfect 5-for-5 in save chances while having yet to allow a run.
Aug 9, 2020
Slated to face live hitters
Chapman (illness) completed a bullpen session Saturday and is expected to face hitters this week, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman continues to build up his arm after missing over two weeks of summer camp due to a positive test for COVID-19. The veteran closer has now tossed multiple bullpens and appears ready to tackle his final hurdle -- facing hitters -- before joining the big-league club. While Chapman remains out, Zack Britton will continue to receive the bulk of save opportunities for the Yankees.
Aug 6, 2020
Another bullpen on tap
Chapman (illness) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman is still building up his arm strength after missing all of summer camp due to COVID-19. The southpaw threw a bullpen session Wednesday, and it sounds like he could be cleared to face live hitters next week if everything goes off without a hitch during his BP session this weekend. Zack Britton should continue to close in Chapman's absence.
Aug 5, 2020
Throws bullpen session
Chapman (illness) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman is still building up his arm strength after missing all of summer camp due to COVID-19. He'll require a couple more bullpen sessions before being cleared for even live batting practice, so his season debut doesn't appear to be imminent. Zack Britton has been closing in his absence.
Aug 3, 2020
Bullpen coming soon
Chapman (illness) threw Monday and will throw a bullpen session within the next two days, Meredith Marakovits of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman missed most of camp after testing positive for COVID-19. Previous reports suggested that he'd throw a bullpen session Monday, but he's evidently a day or two behind that timetable. Zack Britton will remain the temporary closer until Chapman is activated from the injured list.
Aug 2, 2020
Throwing bullpen Monday
Chapman (illness) will throw a bullpen session Monday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was cleared to rejoin the Yankees on Friday, and he'll take the mound Monday for the first time since recovering from COVID-19. The southpaw has been playing catch off flat ground since clearing the league's protocol, and manager Aaron Boone was encouraged with his progress. "He's doing great. Everything's gone well with throwing back-to-back days," Boone said. Until Chapman is able to return to game action, Zack Britton should continue to serve as the Yankees' closer.
Jul 31, 2020
Clear to rejoin Yankees
Chapman (illness) cleared the league's COVID-19 protocols and can rejoin the Yankees, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran southpaw joined the Yankees early in summer camp but was placed on the COVID-19 injured list July 11 after testing positive and showing mild symptoms. Chapman should head to the team's alternate training site to begin participating in workouts, though he figures to require some time before reaching game readiness. Zack Britton has two early-season saves and should continue operating as the fill-in closer until Chapman is ready for game action.
Jul 25, 2020
Produces first negative test
Chapman (illness) produced his first negative test result for COVID-19 on Saturday, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
GM Brian Cashman said earlier in the week the veteran left-hander was mostly symptom-free but was still testing positive for coronavirus, so this could be a significant step toward his return. Chapman still must produce a second negative test before being cleared to rejoin the team, while Zack Britton is expected to fill in as the closer until that occurs.
Jul 22, 2020
Yet to test negative
General manager Brian Cashman said Chapman (illness) is mostly symptom-free but has continued to test positive for COVID-19, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the month and has been on the injured list ever since. While the lefty has only experienced mild symptoms (fortunately), he has yet to submit the two negative test results required to rejoin the Yankees and is set to miss the start of the season as a result. Chapman likely won't need much ramp-up time once he's cleared, though Zack Britton figures to temporarily fill in as the team's closer in the meantime.
Jul 20, 2020
Deemed doubtful for opener
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he doesn't expect Chapman (illness) to be available for Thursday's season opener versus the Nationals, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees placed Chapman on the injured list July 11, two days after the team learned he tested positive for COVID-19. Fortunately for Chapman, he's believed to be displaying only mild symptoms of the coronavirus, but the 32-year-old has yet to submit two negative test results and has yet to rejoin the Yankees. As a reliever, Chapman won't require much ramp-up time once he clears all COVID-19-related protocols, but the Yankees intend to lean on Zack Britton as their primary closer until Chapman is activated.
Jul 11, 2020
Tests positive for COVID-19
Chapman tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman is reportedly showing mild symptoms. He'll have to be symptom-free with a pair of negative tests under his belt before he's allowed to return to the field. While it's possible he's able to do so before Opening Day, which is less than two weeks away, missing out on so much time during an already abbreviated summer camp may mean the Yankees will want him to get a few low-leverage innings under his belt before handling his customary closing duties.
Jul 5, 2020
Joins team Sunday
Chapman reported to Yankee Stadium for summer camp on Sunday, Marly Rivera of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman was not present at the stadium for the team's first official workout Saturday, though manager Aaron Boone clarified that his absence was simply a matter of not finishing intake protocol. The fireballer's arrival Sunday suggests that he is healthy and ready to resume preparation for the 2020 campaign.
Apr 5, 2020
Staying in shape despite shutdown
Chapman has been lifting weights and strengthening his legs during MLB's hiatus, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman recently posted a video to his Instagram account demonstrating the workout routine he is using to stay in shape. The 32-year-old will reprise his role as Yankees closer when the regular season resumes.
Mar 6, 2020
Tosses scoreless inning
Chapman made his spring debut in Friday's 5-1 loss to the Orioles, allowing one hit and striking out one in a single scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
The spring training season began nearly two weeks ago, but the Yankees waited until Friday to give their veteran closer his first live game action of 2020. Per Pete Caldera of USA Today, Chapman evaluated his outing as "a little out of rhythm, but overall good." With Opening Day less than three weeks away, Chapman should see his Grapefruit League workload ramp-up in the coming days.
Mar 4, 2020
Not injured but not debuting yet
Chapman won't pitch Wednesday against the Phillies as previously reported, but he isn't injured, George A. King III of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The news is potentially worrisome, but manager Aaron Boone said there was nothing physically wrong with his closer. Chapman threw a bullpen session Wednesday instead of pitching in the game and could make his Grapefruit League debut Friday against the Orioles.
Feb 29, 2020
Spring debut coming Wednesday
Chapman will make his spring debut Wednesday against the Phillies, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
Chapman hasn't reportedly been battling any injuries, so his delayed start to Grapefruit League action seems to be little more than a 10-year veteran knowing just how many innings he needs to get ready for the regular season. Chapman's 7.7-point drop in strikeout rate last season would be concerning for many pitchers, but when that number still comes in at an excellent 36.2 percent, there's little reason to worry.
