Starting Game 2
Garrett will start Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Phillies on Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Garrett had a breakout season and logged a 2.10 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 21 strikeouts in 25.2 innings over his final five starts. Jesus Luzardo will get the ball in Game 1.

Falls to Mets for seventh loss
Garrett (9-7) took the loss in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Mets, giving up four runs on three hits and two walks over four innings as the Marlins were routed 11-2. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Originally schedule to pitch Tuesday, the extra day of rest just seemed to throw Garrett off as he got tagged for more than three runs for the first time since July 21, on the backs of two-run homers by Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor. The southpaw got lifted after 77 pitches (46 strikes), perhaps with the intention of being available in some capacity for the final game of the season Oct. 1 should a wild-card spot still be on the line. Heading into Thursday, the Marlins are tied with the Cubs for the final playoff berth in the NL. Since the beginning of August, Garrett has a 2.85 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 39:12 K:BB through 53.2 innings and has been Miami's most consistent pitcher.
Sep 26, 2023
Start delayed
Garrett won't start as scheduled Tuesday against the Mets after the game was postponed due to poor field conditions.
ANALYSIS
The playing surface at Citi Field was unable to recover from a weekend of rain, so the Mets and Marlins will be forced to play a doubleheader Wednesday. Garrett holds a dominant 0.57 ERA since the start of September and will presumably start one of Wednesday's games.
Sep 19, 2023
Sharp in no-decision
Garrett did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing one run (zero earned) on five hits over six innings against the Mets. He struck out seven without issuing any walks.
ANALYSIS
Garrett looked laser-focused Tuesday, surrendering just one unearned run and retiring the final 10 batters he faced; however, the 26-year-old settled for a no-decision as Miami's bullpen was unable to retain the lead. Garrett has gone six innings and thrown exactly 91 pitches in back-to-back outings, amassing an impressive 14:2 K:BB without allowing any earned runs during that stretch. He currently lines up for a road rematch with the Mets next week.
Sep 13, 2023
Sharp in ninth win
Garrett (9-6) allowed four hits and two walks while striking out seven over six shutout innings to earn the win Wednesday over the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Garrett lasted just 3.2 innings in his previous start, a loss to the Dodgers. Wednesday's effort was his fifth quality start in his last seven outings, though he's posted a pedestrian 4-3 record in that span. The 26-year-old southpaw is at a 3.67 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 147:27 K:BB through 149.2 innings over 29 outings (28 starts) this season. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Mets.
Sep 8, 2023
Short outing Thursday
Garrett (8-6) took the loss Thursday, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over 3.2 innings against the Dodgers. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Garrett tied his season-high with three walks and contended with heavy traffic, resulting in his shortest outing since July 21 when he lasted just three innings against Colorado. Despite struggling with his command Thursday, the 26-year-old was able to limit the damage to just one run, marking the southpaw's eighth consecutive outing in which he has limited the opposition to three or fewer runs. During this stretch, Garrett has compiled a 3-3 record while posting a 2.68 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 29:9 K:BB across 43.2 innings. He currently lines up to take the mound in Milwaukee next time out.
Sep 1, 2023
Breezes past Nats for eighth win
Garrett (8-5) earned the win over Washington on Thursday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out one batter over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Garrett induced only one swinging strike and notched just one punchout in the outing, but he didn't need his strikeout stuff to pick up the victory. The southpaw recorded his third straight quality start and has now given up three or fewer earned runs in seven straight outings. During that span, he's posted a 3-2 record along with a 2.70 ERA, 1.05 ERA and 25:6 K:BB over 40 frames.
Aug 25, 2023
Posts quality start in loss
Garrett (7-5) took the loss Friday, allowing three runs on seven hits and no walks over six innings against the Nationals. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The big blow came in the sixth inning when Carter Kieboom tagged Garrett with a two-run shot to extend the Nationals' lead. Garrett has just 18 strikeouts in 28 innings so far this month after he fanned 117 in 106 frames through the end of July. The southpaw has a 3.54 ERA this month, though, and his control continues to be immaculate, as he hasn't walked more than two in a start since late May.
Aug 20, 2023
Handed fourth loss
Garrett (7-4) allowed three runs on five hits and struck out six without walking a batter over six innings, taking the loss in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader versus the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Garrett pitched well enough for a quality start, but a pair of solo home runs to Mookie Betts ended up being the difference. Garrett has given up nine runs (eight earned) across 28 innings over his last five starts, though he hasn't struck out more than six in any start in that span. For the season, he's maintained a 3.94 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 132:21 K:BB through 128 innings. He's lined up for a favorable home start versus the Nationals his next time out.
Aug 14, 2023
Blanks Houston for seventh win
Garrett (7-3) earned the win Monday, allowing four hits and two walks over five scoreless innings against the Astros. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Garrett's now 2-0 with a 2.05 ERA over his last four starts (22 innings) after shutting out a powerful Astros lineup over five innings Monday. The 26-year-old left-hander's ERA is down to 3.91 with a 1.19 WHIP and 126:21 K:BB across 23 starts (122 innings) this season. Garrett's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Dodgers in his next outing.
Aug 9, 2023
Earns sixth win
Garrett (6-3) earned the win Tuesday, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings in a 3-2 victory over the Reds. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Garrett's now allowed just five runs over his last three outings (17 innings) after struggling to a 7.85 ERA in his prior four outings. His ERA is down to 4.08 with a 1.19 WHIP and an impressive 125:19 K:BB across 22 starts (117 innings) this season. The 26-year-old Garrett will look to keep the momentum going in his next outing, currently slated for next week against the Astros.
Aug 3, 2023
Fans five in no-decision
Garrett came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 9-8 extra-innings win over the Phillies, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks over five-plus innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
He was briefly on the hook for the loss, getting lifted after he walked Bryson Stott to lead off the sixth inning and watching him come around to score a go-ahead run for the Phillies, but the two bullpens made sure neither starter was involved in the decision. Garrett has completed six innings just once in his last seven seven starts, posting a 5.24 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 32:5 K:BB through 34.1 innings over that stretch, and fatigue could be catching up to the 25-year-old southpaw in his first full season in a big-league rotation. He'll try to get on track in his next outing, likely to come early next week in Cincinnati.
Jul 29, 2023
Six strong innings Friday
Garrett did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing one run on five hits and one walk over six innings in a 6-5 victory over the Tigers. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Garrett didn't allow an earned run versus the Tigers after surrendering 16 over his previous four starts. The long ball had been the left-hander's primary issue. He'd given up six home runs over five contests coming into Friday's matchup, including three last time out versus Colorado. Garrett has shown flashes of being an elite big-league pitcher, but he struggles to put everything together on a consistent basis. Regardless. He's already set a new career high with 111 strikeouts this year and will continue to add to that total as long as he stays healthy.
Jul 21, 2023
Hit hard Friday
Garrett (5-3) surrendered six earned runs on seven hits and no walks over three innings Friday in a loss to the Rockies. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Garrett served up homers in each frame -- to C.J. Cron in the first, Jurickson Profar in the second and Elias Diaz in the third -- and he also surrendered a double to Alan Trejo. Pulled from the game before the top of the fourth, it matched Garrett's shortest start of the season. The 25-year-old southpaw will carry a 4.32 ERA and 1.19 WHIP into his next outing at home against the Tigers.
Jul 16, 2023
Escapes with no-decision Saturday
Garrett didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 6-5 loss to the Orioles, giving up four runs on six hits and a walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw got the hook after 81 pitches (53 strikes) with one runner on base and the Marlins ahead 5-4, ensuring Garrett wouldn't end up in the loss column. The 25-year-old remarkably hasn't been on the losing end of a decision since May 8, going 4-0 in 12 starts over that stretch with a 2.89 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 78:10 K:BB through 65.1 innings. He next lines up for a home outing next weekend against the Rockies.
Jul 9, 2023
Tallies another win
Garrett (5-2) earned the win Saturday, allowing three runs on six hits over five innings against the Phillies. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Garrett picked up another victory Saturday, marking his 11th straight start without taking a loss, a streak that dates back to May 8. All of the damage against Garrett came early, surrendering a solo homer to Trea Turner in the first, then giving up two more runs in the second inning. Over his last six appearances (34 innings), Garrett holds a 2.38 ERA and an elite 41:3 K:BB.
Jul 3, 2023
Fans six in no-decision
Garrett allowed three runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings in Monday's win over St. Louis. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
The Cardinals chipped away at Garrett throughout the contest, scoring one run in each of the second, third and sixth innings. It was his first time allowing more than one earned run since June 5, but he's given up three or fewer runs in nine of his last 10 starts. The 25-year-old lefty now owns a 3.61 ERA with an impressive 98:15 K:BB through 87.1 frames. Garrett's next start is projected to be at home this weekend against the Phillies.
Jun 29, 2023
Sharp in fourth win
Garrett (4-2) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and a walk over five innings in a 6-2 victory over the Red Sox. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old southpaw made a relatively early exit despite his stingy performance, throwing 66 pitches (43 strikes) and leaving with the score tied 1-1, but the Marlins erupted for three runs in the top of the sixth while Garrett was still the pitcher of record. He hasn't been tagged with a loss since May 8, going 3-0 over his last nine starts with a 1.98 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and dazzling 64:9 K:BB through 50 innings, Garrett will look to keep rolling in his next outing, likely to come at home early next week against the Cardinals.
Jun 22, 2023
Tallies career-high 13 punchouts
Garrett allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and no walks while striking out 13 batters over seven innings in a no-decision against Pittsburgh on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Garrett hit the ground running in the contest, striking out five of the first six batters he faced. The southpaw ended with a career-high 13 strikeouts, notching his first double-digit punchout performance of the season. Garrett has been one of the best pitchers in the league for over a month, posting a 2.00 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 56:8 K:BB over his past 45 innings across eight starts. While his ERA on the campaign is just decent at 3.64, it's largely inflated by a 4.1-inning, 11-run shelling against Atlanta on May 3. Take away that performance, and Garrett's season ERA sits at a much more tantalizing 2.49.
Jun 18, 2023
Fans eight Nats in win
Garrett (3-1) picked up the win in Saturday's 5-2 victory over the Nationals, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw continues to give the Marlins some stability in their rotation. Garrett has given up two runs or less in six of his last seven starts, posting a 2.13 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and dazzling 49:8 K:BB through 38 innings over that stretch. While Saturday's quality start was just his second of the season, that's largely due to workload management, as the 90 pitches he tossed against Washington were a season high. Garrett will look to keep rolling in his next outing, likely to come at home next week against the Pirates.
Jun 12, 2023
Tosses gem against White Sox
Garrett did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing three hits and one walk over 5.1 scoreless innings in a 6-5 victory over the White Sox. He struck out nine.
ANALYSIS
Garrett was locked in Sunday, setting a season high in strikeouts with nine while blanking the White Sox across 5.1 innings. After opening up May with 15 runs allowed across his first two starts (9.2 innings), Garrett has been fantastic over his last six appearances (32.0 innings), earning a 2.25 ERA with a 0.8 HR/9 and a 41:7 K:BB. He will look to build on his impressive stretch of starts in his next appearance, which is tentatively scheduled to come against the Nationals in Washington.
Jun 5, 2023
Picks up second win
Garrett (2-2) earned the win Monday, allowing four runs on six hits over 5 innings against Kansas City. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Garrett got off to an inauspicious start, allowing four runs over his first two innings. However, he'd manage to hold the Royals at bay while the Marlins rallied to overcome a 4-0 deficit and pick up the win. The 25-year-old Garrett had been pitching well coming into Monday's outing, holding opponents to two runs or fewer in his last four starts. Garrett sports a 4.47 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP and 60:12 K:BB over 12 starts (58.1 innings) this season.
May 25, 2023
Solid in no-decision
Garrett did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks over five innings against the Rockies. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Garrett has now allowed just three runs over his last three outings (16.1 innings). However, he's only pitched through six innings once in nine starts. The 25-year-old left-hander is 1-2 this season with a 4.50 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 47:11 K:BB through 48 innings. Garrett tentatively lines up to face the Padres at home in his next start.
May 21, 2023
Brilliant in no-decision
Garrett didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 1-0 win over the Giants, allowing only one hit and one walk over 6.1 scoreless innings. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw exited a 0-0 tie after throwing 76 pitches and generating an impressive 29 called or swinging strikes. Garrett's eight strikeout tied his season high, set in his previous outing, while the quality start was his first of 2023. Toss out his 11-run disaster against Atlanta at the beginning of May, and Garrett sports a 2.56 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 41:6 K:BB through 38.2 innings while serving up only two homers. He could be headed for another ratio-spoiling start, however, as he lines up to take the mound next week in Coors Field.
May 14, 2023
Strikes out eight in no-decision
Garrett did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk across five innings during a 3-1 win over the Reds. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Garrett posted his third start of the campaign with one or fewer runs across at least five innings and recorded a season-high eight strikeouts in the process. The left-hander's 5.40 ERA remains inflated due to an 11-run outing versus Atlanta, but his 36:7 K:BB over 36.2 innings gives him a solid upside moving forward. Garrett's next start is tentatively scheduled during a three-game weekend set versus San Francisco.
May 9, 2023
Fans six in loss
Garrett (1-2) took the loss against Arizona on Monday, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out six batters over 5.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Garrett gave up 11 runs over 4.1 frames against Atlanta in his previous start, so just about anything he could have done Monday would have been an improvement. The left-hander managed to give Miami some length with 5.1 innings, and he didn't give up a run until the fourth, but a Christian Walker homer in the sixth, followed by two straight singles, was enough to end his night and set him on to his second straight defeat. Garrett has a 5.97 ERA on the campaign, though it would be a much more palatable 3.29 if not for the blow-up in his previous outing.
May 4, 2023
Disastrous outing against Atlanta
Garrett (1-1) took the loss in Wednesday's 14-6 rout at the hands of Atlanta, surrendering 11 runs on 14 hits -- including four home runs -- and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
There's no silver lining here for Garrett. Most of the damage came in a seven-run second inning by Atlanta that saw the southpaw serve up three homers, before a Ronald Acuna blast in the fourth finally chased Garrett from the game. His ERA jumped from 2.45 to a bloated 5.81 after this effort, but it's possible to view this performance as an aberration, as the 25-year-old had been tagged for only one long ball over his first five appearances and 22 innings this season. Garrett will look to put this disaster behind him when he next takes the mound, which is likely to come early next week in Arizona.
Apr 27, 2023
Pitches well in abbreviated outing
Garrett did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing no runs on one hit over three innings against the Braves. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Garrett allowed just one hit in three innings against the Braves before he was replaced following a rain delay. The left-handed Garrett has been solid early in the season -- he's 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 19:3 K:BB. However, he's yet to make it out of the fifth inning through four starts this year. Garrett should remain in the Marlins rotation while Trevor Rogers (biceps) and Johnny Cueto (biceps) are sidelined.
Apr 23, 2023
Secures first win
Garrett (1-0) picked up the win in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, allowing one run on five hits and a walk over 5.2 innings in a 3-2 victory over the Guardians. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
For the second straight outing, the southpaw came one out short of a quality start, this time getting the hook after 82 pitches (60 strikes) when he gave up a two-out walk and a double with the Marlins clinging to a 3-1 lead. The bullpen kept the inherited runners from scoring, however, and got Garrett his first win of 2023. The 25-year-old will take a 2.84 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 16:3 K:BB through 19 innings into his next outing, which could come next week in Atlanta.
Apr 21, 2023
To start later game Saturday
Garrett will start the second half of Saturday's doubleheader against the Guardians, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Garrett was supposed to toe the rubber for the Marlins in Friday's series opener, but that game got postponed into a traditional doubleheader Saturday because of inclement weather in Cleveland. Garrett, 25, holds a 3.38 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 13:2 K:BB through 13.1 innings (two starts, one relief appearance) this season.
Apr 16, 2023
Pitches well despite no decision
Garrett did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk over 5.2 innings against Arizona. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Garrett allowed minimal damage in his second start of the season. This performance was a steady improvement over the 25-year-old southpaw's start last week against the Mets, when he allowed nine hits in just 4.2 innings. The jury is still out on the Alabama native, as he needs to show it consistently in order to keep getting starting opportunities.
Apr 9, 2023
Strikes out seven in spot start
Garrett did not factor into the decision during Sunday's 7-2 win over the Mets, allowing two runs on nine hits and one walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Garrett was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville Tuesday and took Johnny Cueto's (biceps) spot in the rotation. In his first start of the year and only second appearance, Garrett did a fantastic job of working around trouble but wasn't in line for the win after getting pulled in the fifth with two outs. The only blemishes on Garrett's ledger came on RBI singles to Francisco Alvarez and Pete Alonso in the second and fifth innings, respectively. Cueto isn't expected to be sidelined much longer than the minimum 15 days, but Garrett should still garner at least one more start before the veteran right-hander returns.
Apr 4, 2023
Recalled from Triple-A
Garrett was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Garrett would seem to be a potential fill-in starter for Johnny Cueto, who was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday after aggravating a lingering biceps injury in his Marlins debut Monday against the Twins.
Apr 3, 2023
Sent down to Triple-A
Garrett was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville by the Marlins on Monday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Garrett probably wasn't going to be available for another day or two after throwing three innings in relief Saturday, so the Marlins are replacing him with a fresh arm. He'll likely be stretched back out as a starter with Jacksonville.
Mar 25, 2023
MLB-bound but may not start
Garrett is expected to break camp in the big leagues, but he'll be a long reliever rather than a sixth starter if he fails to beat Edward Cabrera for a rotation spot, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Garrett and Cabrera have been in a battle all spring, and at one point it seemed as though they could both emerge victorious, with the Marlins seemingly open to a six-man rotation. The decision has been made to go the traditional five-man route instead, but the loser of the battle should still remain on the roster, as injuries have left Miami with just 13 healthy pitchers in big-league camp. Garrett's 8.25 ERA this spring is far worse than Cabrera's 1.86 mark, though Garrett's 12:5 K:BB is more impressive than Cabrera's seven strikeouts and four walks.
Mar 18, 2023
Likely headed for Triple-A
Garrett has a minor-league option remaining and appears to be behind Edward Cabrera in the battle for the Marlins' fifth starter job, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Cabrera also has better numbers this spring, although neither pitcher has dominated -- Garrett has a 7:3 K:BB through 9.1 innings to Cabrera's 4:2 K:BB in five spring frames. Garrett posted a 3.58 ERA and 90:24 K:BB through 88 innings in 17 big-league starts last season, and even if he begins 2023 at Triple-A Jacksonville, he could see significant action for Miami over the course of the summer.
Mar 14, 2023
Stumbles against Mets
Garrett allowed five runs on six hits and three walks over 4.1 innings while striking out three in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander did get stretched out to 71 pitches (44 strikes), but that was about the only positive takeaway from this outing. Garrett remains firmly in the mix for a rotation spot with the Marlins, and while his spring ERA has now ballooned to 8.68, his 7:3 K:BB through 9.1 innings shows there's little cause for alarm. However, this performance could put Garrett behind his main competition for the fifth starter role, Edward Cabrera (1.80 ERA, 4:2 K:BB through five spring innings.)
Feb 26, 2023
Erratic in spring debut
Garrett gave up two runs on three hits over two innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old lefty breezed through the first inning before running into trouble in the second, highlighted by a Pete Alonso homer. Garrett is battling with Edward Cabrera for the fifth starter role with the Marlins to begin the season after having a bit of a breakout in 2022 with a 3.58 ERA, 24.1 percent strikeout rate and 6.4 percent walk rate over 88 big-league innings.
Feb 21, 2023
To start Grapefruit League opener
Garrett will start the Marlins' Grapefruit League opener Saturday, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Garrett might have to put on a show this spring in order to claim the final spot in Miami's season-opening starting rotation. Edward Cabrera is thought to be his primary competition for that job. There's also a chance the Marlins will roll with a six-man group of starters in the early going, though that assumes good health on all fronts coming out of camp.
Feb 18, 2023
Not guaranteed rotation spot
Garrett could be fighting with Edward Cabrera for the final spot in the Marlins' Opening Day rotation, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The offseason addition of Johnny Cueto could push a younger pitcher to Triple-A Jacksonville, although the team is also considering a six-man rotation. Garrett took a big step forward with his command in 2022, posting a 24.1 percent strikeout rate and 6.4 percent walk rate over 17 starts and 88 innings, and the 25-year-old southpaw could be poised for a breakout if he gets a chance to be a regular part of the Marlins' rotation.
Oct 4, 2022
Ineffective in final start of 2022
Garrett (3-7) was tagged with the loss after he pitched 4.2 innings, surrendering two runs on six hits and five walks while striking out seven Tuesday versus Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Garrett struggled to keep Atlanta off the basepaths, allowing 11 to reach base in the contest. He gave up one run in the second inning before William Contreras notched an RBI single in the top of the fifth, ending the left-hander's day with two outs in the frame. Garrett allowed two or fewer runs for the fifth consecutive start, finishing the season with a 3.58 ERA and 1.25 WHIP while striking out 90 batters over 88 innings in 17 starts.
Sep 29, 2022
Allows two runs over four innings
Garrett did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts over four innings against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Milwaukee tagged Garrett for four hits in the second inning, during which they scored both runs charged to Garrett on the night. While the 25-year-old had only thrown 113.2 innings across all levels this season, manager Don Mattingly pulled Garrett with only 76 pitches through four innings. The southpaw should stick around in the rotation with Trevor Rogers shut down, and if he does, he will take a 3.56 ERA into his next start, which would likely come against Atlanta next week.
Sep 29, 2022
Remains in rotation
Garrett is scheduled to start Thursday's game against the Brewers in Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
Garrett was called up from Triple-A Jacksonville last week and stepped into the rotation Friday against the Nationals, working six innings and allowing one run en route to claiming his third win of the season. With Trevor Rogers (lat) shut down for the season, Garrett should be in store for two more starts to close out the 2022 campaign. After Thursday's outing, Garrett will line up to take the hill Oct. 4 versus Atlanta.
Sep 24, 2022
Sharp in third win
Garrett (3-6) picked up the win in Friday's 5-2 victory over the Nationals, allowing one run on five hits over six innings. He struck out six without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old southpaw delivered his fifth quality start of the season in impressive fashion, tossing six shutout innings after Lane Thomas led off the game with a solo shot. Garrett pounded the zone, firing 60 of 82 pitches for strikes, and this was the first time in his big-league career he worked at least six innings without issuing a free pass. It's taken him a while to reach his potential, but the 2016 first-round pick seems to be making a place for himself in Miami's 2023 rotation plans.
Sep 23, 2022
Starting Friday
Garrett will start Friday's game against the Nationals, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was called up from Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday and will step into the rotation for Trevor Rogers (lat). Garrett has a 3.68 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 75:19 K:BB across 73.1 innings this year and could make up to three starts, including Friday, down the stretch for Miami.
Sep 22, 2022
Recalled Thursday
Garrett was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old was sent down last week but will likely start Friday against the Nationals after Trevor Rogers (lat) was placed on the 15-day injured list. Since Rogers will be unavailable for the remainder of the season, it seems likely that Garrett will be able to remain in the rotation down the stretch. Garrett has made 14 major-league starts this year and has posted a 3.68 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 73.1 innings.
Sep 13, 2022
Sent back to minors
Garrett was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garrett started Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Rangers and gave up two runs over 4.2 innings, and he won't remain with the big-league club. The 25-year-old has a 3.68 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 75:19 K:BB across 73.1 frames this year, so he figures to rejoin the Marlins at some point down the stretch.
Sep 13, 2022
Short outing in return
Garrett didn't factor into the decision in the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Rangers, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Making his first start in nearly a month after recovering from an oblique injury, Garrett was limited to 65 pitches (38 strikes) but pitched fairly well before getting the hook. It's not clear whether the southpaw will remain in the Miami rotation as a sixth starter or shift to the bullpen, but his 3.68 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 75:19 K:BB through 73.1 innings on the season suggest he's ready for a regular starting role.

Reinstated ahead of nightcap
Garrett (oblique) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Monday's start against the Rangers, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garrett made a rehab start at Triple-A Jacksonville last week and will rejoin the Marlins to start the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Rangers. Since he tossed just 46 pitches at Jacksonville on Wednesday, it's possible that he's on a pitch count during Monday's nightcap. Whether the southpaw remains in the rotation or moves to a relief role following Monday's start remains to be seen.
Sep 12, 2022
Returning for doubleheader start
The Marlins plan to reinstate Garrett (oblique) from the 15-day injured list to have him start the second game of Monday's doubleheader with the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old southpaw initially appeared to be at risk of missing the remainder of the season when he was placed on the IL on Aug. 20 with a right oblique strain, but he ended up making swifter progress in his recovery than expected and will be back with the Marlins with more than three weeks to spare. Garrett was sharp during his lone rehab start last week with Triple-A Jacksonville, covering 3.1 innings while striking out three and allowing one earned run on one hit and no walks. He tossed only 46 pitches in that outing, so the Marlins will presumably look to keep him in the 60-to-75 range as he steps back into the rotation Monday. After the doubleheader, it's unclear if the Marlins will intend to keep Garrett around with the big club as part of a six-man rotation or as a reliever. Miami could also option him back to Triple-A following the outing.
Sep 6, 2022
Ready for rehab assignment
Garrett (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Jacksonville, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
It was reported in late August that Garrett's injury might cost him the rest of the season, but he has apparently made good progress and is ready to resume pitching in games. As such, he will have a chance to rejoin the big club before the campaign comes to a close.
Sep 2, 2022
Sim game on tap
Garrett (oblique) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Thursday and will pitch a simulated game Saturday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garrett was placed on the injured list in late August, and the Marlins indicated at the time that the left-hander wasn't expected to return this season. However, he's made good progress over the last two weeks and has now been cleared to face hitters. The 25-year-old will still need to increase his workload before he's in the mix to return from the injured list. In spite of Garrett's encouraging progress, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Marlins exercise caution rather than rushing him back since the team isn't in contention for a playoff spot.
Aug 20, 2022
Probably done for season
Garrett is sidelined with a right oblique strain and probably won't return this season, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He was a late scratch from his scheduled start Saturday against the Dodgers, and while Garrett is eligible to be activated at the end of August, the nature of the injury probably makes it unrealistic for him to get stretched out in time to rejoin the rotation before the end of the season. The 25-year-old lefty had a successful campaign, logging a 3.67 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 71 strikeouts in 68.2 innings through 13 MLB starts. Miami's one strength is starting pitching depth, but Garrett should at least get to compete for a rotation spot next spring.
Aug 20, 2022
Scratched Saturday, going on IL
Garrett will not make his scheduled start Saturday against the Dodgers and will be placed on the injured list for an unspecified reason, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
It's not clear who will start in Garrett's place or what the injury is, but he will be out until at least Aug. 30.
Aug 14, 2022
Tosses six shutout frames
Garrett yielded five hits and three walks over six scoreless innings in Sunday's loss to Atlanta. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Garrett was in line for the victory before Atlanta flipped the game in the ninth inning. He'd been tagged with 11 runs (10 earned) over his previous three outings since he last turned in a quality start. The 25-year-old lefty lowered his season ERA to 3.67 alongside a 71:17 K:BB through 68.2 frames. Garrett is projected to face the Dodgers on the road next weekend.
Aug 10, 2022
Hit hard in loss
Garrett (2-6) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs on eight hits and zero walks over 4.2 innings against the Phillies. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
JT Realmuto and Jean Segura both tagged Garrett for solo home runs, and the Phillies racked up eight hits total over Garrett's 4.2 innings. This was the first start all season in which Garrett did not walk a batter and the first time that he struck out fewer than seven in five starts, so perhaps he was around the strike zone a bit too much. He looks to get back on track in his next scheduled start against the Braves this weekend.
Aug 3, 2022
Eleven Ks in losing effort
Garrett (2-5) took the loss Tuesday as the Marlins fell 2-1 to the Reds, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out 11.
ANALYSIS
The eleven Ks tied the career high he set only three starts before, but a lack of run support left the 24-year-old southpaw in the loss column. Garrett has an impressive 3.03 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 44:8 K:BB through 35.2 innings over six starts since the beginning of July, but the quality of his competition over that stretch shouldn't be ignored -- five of the six outings came against the Reds, Pirates or Nationals, all of whom rank in the bottom 10 in the league in wRC+ against LHP.
Jul 28, 2022
Fans eight but takes loss
Garrett (2-4) took the loss against Cincinnati on Wednesday, pitching five innings and allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out eight.
ANALYSIS
Garrett looked to be headed for an early exit after giving up four runs in the first inning, but he surrendered only one more over the remainder of his appearance and was able to complete five frames. However, the Marlins offense was unable to provide enough runs to overcome the early deficit, handling Garrett his fourth loss of the campaign. Prior to Wednesday, the left-hander appeared to be putting everything together, allowing just five runs while posting a 25:5 K:BB over his past 25 innings across four starts.
Jul 22, 2022
Fans seven in win
Garrett (2-3) allowed one run on two hits and a walk over six innings Friday, striking out seven and earning a win over Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
The only damage against Garrett was a solo home run by Jason Delay in the third frame. His last two starts have come against the Pirates; he's combined to strike 18 batters while allowing just one run over 12 innings in those outings. The 24-year-old southpaw now owns a 3.42 ERA with a 47:11 K:BB through nine starts this season. Garrett is lined up to start in Cincinnati next week.
Jul 14, 2022
Punches out 11
Garrett allowed two hits and two walks while striking out 11 across six scoreless innings Thursday against the Pirates. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Garrett dominated the Pirates and struck out a career-high 11 batters on the strength of 23 swinging strikes across 102 total pitches. After completing at least five innings only once in his first five starts this season, Garrett has done so in each of his last three outings. In that same three-start span, he's maintained a 1.89 ERA with an 18:4 K:BB across 19 frames.
Jul 9, 2022
Completes 5.2 frames Saturday
Garrett allowed three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out three over 5.2 innings against the Mets on Saturday. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
All of the damage against Garrett came by way of the home run -- he served up a solo blast to Pete Alonso in the fourth inning and a two-run homer to Francisco Lindor in the sixth. The latter long ball spelled the end of Garrett's outing, but he fared fairly well overall, giving up a season-low three total hits. The southpaw has had a few poor outings so far, but he's held the opposition to three or fewer earned runs in five of his seven appearances on the campaign.
Jul 4, 2022
Turns in strong outing
Garrett allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out four across 7.1 innings Monday against the Nationals. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Garrett pounded the zone in this one, firing 57 of his 83 pitches for strikes. He surrendered his only run in the top of the third inning on an RBI single to left field. The southpaw got knocked around for five runs in his previous outing, but he's allowed three runs or fewer in four of his last five starts. Garrett has accrued a 4.25 ERA and 1.45 WHIP with a 26:7 K:BB over 29.2 innings on the year.
Jun 29, 2022
Hit around in loss
Garrett (1-3) gave up five earned runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five to take the loss in a 5-3 defeat to the Cardinals on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Garrett took his third loss of the season in his sixth start since being recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville. The 24-year-old left-hander was effective through the first four innings, but then the Cardinals got to him with a four-run fifth inning to knock him out of the game at 84 pitches. Despite wearing an inflated 5.24 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP, Garrett is striking out about one batter per nine and has a chase rate in the 95th percentile. He is expected to make his next start at Washington on Monday.
Jun 24, 2022
Works around nine hits
Garrett allowed two runs (one earned) on nine hits and one walk while striking out seven across 4.2 innings Thursday against the Rockies. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Garrett allowed multiple hits in all but one of his five innings, but he managed to work out of danger on most occasions. He flashed interesting swing-and-miss stuff, backing his seven punchouts with 16 swinging strikes across 94 total pitches. Garrett has recorded at least five strikeouts in three of his four starts in the majors this season, and he has a 4.08 ERA across 17.2 frames.
Jun 19, 2022
Stumbles versus Mets
Garrett (1-2) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks with no strikeouts across four innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Garrett wasn't bad in this one, but he wasn't great either. He threw 44 of his 75 pitches for strikes, and the big mistake on his ledger was a two-run home run to Francisco Lindor in the third inning. With a 4.85 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 10:4 K:BB across 13 innings in three starts, Garrett's been a reasonable back-end starter for the Marlins. He's projected for a home start versus the Rockies next week, though he could be moved into a rematch with the Mets if the Marlins add a spot starter since their next day off is June 30.
Jun 11, 2022
Effective in win
Garrett (1-1) allowed an unearned run on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings to earn the win Saturday over the Astros.
ANALYSIS
An error allowed Jeremy Pena to reach in the fifth inning, and Jose Altuve knocked him in with an RBI double. That was the only damage on Garrett's line in an otherwise productive outing for his first win in two games this season. Hes now given up five runs (four earned) on 11 hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts across nine innings. Garrett has a chance to continue in the rotation as injuries have piled up for the Marlins -- he's projected for a road start versus the Mets next week.
Jun 10, 2022
Receives another start
Garrett is slated to start Saturday's game against the Astros in Houston, FishStripes.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Jesus Luzardo (forearm) and Cody Poteet (elbow) stuck on the injured list and Elieser Hernandez having been sent down to the minors, Garrett will pick up a second turn through the Miami rotation. In his season debut for the big club last Sunday against the Giants, Garrett was dealt a loss after giving up four earned runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five in 3.1 innings.
Jun 5, 2022
Ineffective in loss
Garrett (0-1) took the loss Sunday against San Francisco, allowing four runs on five hits, two hit batsmen and a walk while striking out five in 3.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
The big blow against Garrett was Donovan Walton's one-out grand slam in the fourth inning. While the home run accounted for all the runs against the lefty, he was less than stellar in the other innings of his first start of the season. The 24-year-old has been effective at Triple-A Jacksonville, compiling a 3.71 ERA in 23 career starts, but has not been able to put it together at the big-league level with a 5.60 ERA and 45:26 K:BB in 45 innings since 2020.
Jun 5, 2022
Starting Sunday against Giants
Garrett is starting Sunday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
He was on the taxi squad and is listed as the confirmed starter. Garrett dealt with a shoulder impingement in early May and gave up two earned runs while striking out eight over 7.2 innings in his two most recent starts at Triple-A. The Marlins will likely give Garrett every chance to prove he belongs in the rotation going forward, especially with Max Meyer (elbow) on the shelf at Triple-A.
Jun 4, 2022
Expected to start Sunday
Garrett has joined the Marlins as part of their taxi squad and will likely start Sunday's game against the Giants, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garrett was shut down for a month at Triple-A Jacksonville due to a left shoulder injury, but he returned to action last Sunday. The southpaw allowed a hit and no walks while striking out three in five scoreless innings against Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and will likely draw his first major-league start of the season Sunday. Elieser Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A on Saturday, so Garrett should have a chance to remain in Miami's rotation.
May 29, 2022
Makes return at Triple-A
Garrett (shoulder) returned from the 7-day injured list Sunday and struck out three over five scoreless innings for Triple-A Jacksonville in its 4-3 loss to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday. He gave up one hit and no walks in a no-decision.
ANALYSIS
Garrett slotted back into the Jacksonville rotation for the first start since April 26 after a month-long shutdown due to a left shoulder injury. The 24-year-old will be bypassed for a spot in the big-league rotation during the upcoming week with Edward Cabrera on track to receive a call-up from Jacksonville, but Garrett could be the next man up for a promotion if the Marlins lose another starting pitcher at any point.
May 24, 2022
Ready to rejoin Triple-A rotation
Garrett (shoulder) is expected to be activated from Triple-A Jacksonville's 7-day injured list to start Sunday for the affiliate, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garrett hasn't pitched for Jacksonville since April 26 while recovering from left shoulder inflammation. He looks ready to slot back into the rotation this weekend, however, after he completed a rehab start Saturday for Single-A Jupiter. He tossed 2.2 innings in that start, striking out five while giving up two earned runs on three hits and two walks.
May 5, 2022
Lands on IL
Garrett has been placed on the 7-day injured list with Triple-A Jacksonville due to an impingement in his left shoulder, Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw last pitched for Jacksonville on April 26 and struck out seven batters over five strong innings, but the issue apparently cropped up after the start. The 24-year-old's injury could cost him another chance at proving himself in the Miami rotation, as top prospect Max Meyer is now in line to get the next opportunity if it arises while Garrett is sidelined.
Mar 21, 2022
Moves to MiLB camp
The Marlins optioned Garrett to Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
After finishing out the 2021 season in the minors, Garrett faced an uphill battle to crack the Opening Day rotation, so his demotion Monday comes as little surprise. He should be able to pick up regular starts at Jacksonville to begin the 2022 campaign and could be one of the first pitchers in line for a call-up when injuries inevitably hit the big-league rotation.
Aug 17, 2021
Sent to Triple-A
Garrett was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garrett was tagged for three runs on three hits and six walks over three-plus innings during Monday's start, and he'll return to the minors following the rough outing. The 24-year-old has struggled in eight outings for the Marlins this season with a 5.03 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 32:20 K:BB across 34 innings.
Aug 17, 2021
Can't find plate Monday
Garrett (1-2) took the loss Monday as the Marlins were routed 12-2 by Atlanta, giving up three runs on three hits and six walks over three-plus innings. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old southpaw got staked to an early 2-1 lead but his inability to get the ball over the plate quickly led to disaster, as Garrett managed to toss only 39 of 77 pitches for strikes before getting the hook. Trevor Rogers (personal) remains without a timeline to return to the Marlins and Pablo Lopez (shoulder) is only throwing bullpen sessions, but Garrett's 5.03 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 32:20 K:BB through 34 innings aren't making a strong case for him to stay in the rotation much longer.
Aug 11, 2021
Struggles through short start
Garrett didn't factor into the decision during Tuesday's 6-5 loss to San Diego, allowing five runs on eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Coming off two straight solid outings, Garrett coughed up nearly as many baserunners as outs recorded and surrendered runs in three different innings. This was the rookie's first start allowing more than three runs and his spot in the rotation isn't secure, though the fact that the start came against a powerful offense bodes well for his prospects.
Aug 10, 2021
Picks up another start
Garrett is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Padres, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Trevor Rogers (personal) apparently won't be ready to return from the Family Medical Emergency List for the second game of the series in San Diego, so Garrett will be awarded a second straight turn through the rotation. Garrett has been sharp across both of his past two outings with Miami, working 12 innings between the starts while allowing two runs on nine hits and five walks and striking out 16.
Aug 5, 2021
Fans six in no-decision
Garrett blanked the Mets over five innings during Thursday's win, allowing five hits and four runs while striking out six. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old, who was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville ahead of Thursday's start, showed strong command this time around as he stranded each of his runners. Garrett's velocity wasn't at its strongest, with his fastball averaging 89 mph. In his five major league call-ups this season, the southpaw has given up 11 runs over 27.2 innings. Thanks to his successful outing, Garrett should have a chance to remain in the rotation with Trevor Rogers (personal), Pablo Lopez (shoulder) and Cody Poteet (knee) all on the shelf.
Aug 5, 2021
Recalled prior to start
Garrett was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville ahead of Thursday's start against the Mets, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garrett allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out 10 in seven innings during his most recent major-league start July 24, but he was still sent down following the outing. If he performs well Thursday, the southpaw should have the chance to remain in the rotation since Trevor Rogers (personal), Pablo Lopez (shoulder) and Cody Poteet (knee) are all sidelined.
Aug 5, 2021
Start on tap Thursday
The Marlins will call up Garrett from Triple-A Jacksonville to start Thursday's game against the Mets, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Expect Miami to make the transaction official shortly before Thursday's 12:10 p.m. ET first pitch. Despite the Marlins rotation having been ravaged by injuries in recent weeks, Garrett was demoted to Triple-A following an outstanding start July 24, during which he limited the Padres to two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out a career-high 10 batters over seven frames. If he can quiet the Mets bats Thursday, Garrett could have a longer leash in the rotation with Trevor Rogers on the Family Medical Emergency list and with Pablo Lopez (shoulder), Cody Poteet (knee) and Elieser Hernandez (quadriceps) on the injured list.
Jul 25, 2021
Demoted after career-best start
The Marlins optioned Garrett to Triple-A Jacksonville on Sunday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Miami's decision to demote Garrett is likely more of a roster-management move rather than a result of any dissatisfaction with his performance; the 23-year-old lefty submitted the best start of his MLB career in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Padres, working seven innings while allowing only two runs and striking out 10. The Miami rotation is extremely shorthanded at the moment, so Garrett likely won't have to wait long for a call-up. The Marlins play only five games during the upcoming week, with the pair of off days allowing the club to get by with a three- or four-man rotation in the short term.
Jul 24, 2021
Returns to big leagues
The Marlins recalled Garrett from Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The lefty rejoins Miami to fill the roster spot of Trevor Rogers (back) and presumably enter the starting rotation until Rogers is activated. In four appearances with the Marlins this season, three of which were starts, Garrett has pitched 15.2 innings and posted a 5.17 ERA. Walks have been an issue for him, though, as he's issued eight free passes.
Jul 19, 2021
Demoted after spot start
The Marlins optioned Garrett to Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Miami called Garrett up and designated him as its 27th man for Sunday's game against the Phillies, which was proceeded by a resumption of the contest Saturday that was suspended in the top of the 10th inning. Garrett drew his third start of the season for the Marlins in the series finale, working 4.1 innings and giving up three runs (two earned) en route to taking a no-decision in the 7-4 loss. Though the Marlins still have two open spots in the rotation with Pablo Lopez (shoulder) recently joining Cody Poteet (knee) on the injured list, Garrett apparently didn't impress enough to receive another turn this weekend versus the Padres. The Marlins would need to place another player on the IL in a corresponding move in order for Garrett to be eligible to rejoin the big club within 15 days.
Jul 19, 2021
Settles for no-decision
Garrett allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out two in 4.1 innings in Sunday's 7-4 loss to the Phillies. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Garrett was called up from Triple-A Jacksonville ahead of Sunday's game, and he was in line for the win when he exited the contest. However, the Phillies scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings, which forced the southpaw to settle for the no-decision. The 23-year-old has now posted a 5.17 ERA and 1.91 WHIP in 15.2 innings across four major-league appearances (three starts) this year. If Garrett remains in the rotation, he tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Padres on Friday.
Jul 18, 2021
Starting series finale
The Marlins promoted Garrett from Triple-A Jacksonville and will have him start Sunday's series finale against the Phillies, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
An injury-plagued Miami rotation took another hit earlier this weekend when Pablo Lopez (shoulder) hit the shelf, so Garrett could be in store for additional starts beyond Sunday, regardless of how he fares versus Philadelphia. Garrett was lit up for seven runs on 15 hits and five walks across 11.1 innings in his three other appearances at the big-league level in 2021, but he's been a more reliable performer over a larger sample of 10 starts at Triple-A (4.41 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 8.6 K/9).
Jun 15, 2021
Sent to Triple-A
Garrett was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander made his third start of the season Monday versus the Cardinals and allowed two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk over 4.1 innings, and he'll now return to the minors. The Marlins have scheduled off days Thursday and next Monday, so the team can operate with a short rotation for the immediate future. Garrett has a 5.56 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 8:5 K:BB across 11.1 innings this season and could receiving another look from Miami later in the summer.
Jun 15, 2021
Gives up two runs in no-decision
Garrett didn't factor into the decision Monday against the Cardinals after allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk while fanning three across 4.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Garrett displayed improved control in his second MLB start but couldn't get out of the fifth inning after needing 70 pitches just to record 10 outs. The left-hander could remain in the rotation for another start, but he'll need to deliver a better performance if he wants to remain an MLB-caliber starter once some of the injured pitchers on the Marlins roster begin to recover.
Jun 13, 2021
Gets second start
Garrett is slated to start Monday's game against the Cardinals in St. Louis.
ANALYSIS
Despite displaying shaky control (three walks in four innings) in his first start of the season Wednesday in Miami versus the Rockies, Garrett will get another turn through the rotation. The Marlins' lack of healthy starting pitchers more than anything is allowing Garrett to stick in the rotation for the time being, but he could be at risk of losing his spot soon with Cody Poteet (knee) having resumed a throwing program since being placed on the injured list June 5.
Jun 10, 2021
Lasts four innings
Garrett (0-1) allowed two earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three across four innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Garrett drew the start due to the depleted state of the Marlins rotation. He limited runs to a reasonable degree, but allowed multiple baserunners in three of the four innings he pitched. Garrett has now thrown only 14.2 major-league innings, during which he's allowed 10 earned runs while posting a 13:9 K:BB. He could have the chance to take at least one more turn through the rotation, depending on the timeline for several Miami starters to return to the mound.
Jun 9, 2021
Nabs start Wednesday
Garrett is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Rockies, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Miami currently has six starters on the 10-day or 60-day injured list, two of its top pitching prospects (Sixto Sanchez and Edward Cabrera) on the 7-day minor-league IL, and another starting option in the midst of serving an 80-game suspension (Paul Campbell), so Garrett will get the chance to step into a depleted rotation. Garrett hasn't fared well in his three career outings at the big-league level, giving up eight earned runs on 11 hits and six walks over 10.2 innings.
Jun 8, 2021
Recalled by Marlins
Garrett was recalled Tuesday from Triple-A Jacksonville.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw fills the roster spot of Daniel Castano (shoulder), whom the Marlins placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, and figures to start Wednesday's game in Castano's stead. Having helf opponents scoreless in two of his last three minor-league starts, Garrett appears to be a capable fill-in for the Marlins' rotation.
Jun 5, 2021
Could get call Wednesday
Garrett is on turn at Triple-A Jacksonville to pitch Wednesday if Cody Poteet (knee) misses his next start, Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Poteet left's Friday's game with what was diagnosed as an MCL sprain, but as yet he hasn't been ruled out for his next outing. If he is forced to miss time, Garrett is in position to replace him, particularly with Daniel Castano likely filling in for Elieser Hernandez (quadriceps) on Tuesday. Garrett gave up three runs over three innings against the Dodgers on May 15 in his season debut for the Marlins, but the 23-year-old's posted a 1.69 ERA and 17:4 K:BB over his last three starts (16 innings) at Triple-A.
May 16, 2021
Returns to Triple-A
Garrett was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville on Sunday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old was called up by Miami on Saturday and surrendered three runs over three frames in his season debut. Garrett will head to Triple-A for now but figures to rejoin the Marlins at some point later in the year.
May 15, 2021
Called up by Marlins
Garrett was recalled by the Marlins on Saturday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Both of Garrett's appearances during his big-league debut last season came as a starter, but the Marlins don't appear to need a starter for the next few days. It's possible he'll be asked to provide length behind Jordan Holloway against the Dodgers on Saturday, as he lasted just 3.2 innings in his first career start Monday. Cody Poteet was optioned to clear a spot for Garrett on the roster.
Mar 15, 2021
Heads to minors
The Marlins optioned Garrett to Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Garrett was one of seven players sent to minor-league camp in the Marlins' latest round of cuts as Opening Day approaches. The 2016 first-round pick got the chance to make his MLB debut during the abbreviated 2020 campaign, making two starts and giving up five earned runs while striking out eight over 7.2 innings. Miami is expected to continue developing Garrett as a rotation option, but a move to the bullpen might represent his most realistic path back to the big leagues if the Marlins' starters enjoy generally good health this season.
Mar 3, 2021
Velocity back up to begin spring
Garrett was sitting in the low 90s with his fastball, topping out at 93 mph, during his Grapefruit League debut Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
On the down side, the young southpaw did walk three of the seven batters he faced, but seeing his velocity rebound was encouraging after he averaged only 89.7 mph in his big-league debut last year. "I was losing a little gas [late last season]," Garrett said Tuesday. "I'd like it to be a little higher, and I think I can get it there. Just continuing to throw and as the innings get up and I get a little more conditioned, that will go up or at least stay where it is." A good showing in camp could see him begin the season in the Marlins' bullpen, but he's more likely to be assigned to Triple-A and stay stretched out as a starter.

Makes wild-card roster
Garrett made the roster for the NL Wild Card Series against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Garrett made his first two MLB starts this year. He gave up one run and struck out six in five innings to pick up the win in his first outing and gave up four earned runs in 2.2 innings in his second outing. The main takeaway is that Garrett's fastball could be a problem for him, as he averaged just 89.7 mph on that pitch. His curveball was as advertised, a plus hammer, but he will really need to locate his four-pitch mix to get by on that fastball velocity. He could be used as a long reliever or situational lefty in this series.

ANALYSIS
Garrett was roughed up Sunday in his second career start as he was serving as the 29th man in the doubleheader against the Nationals. He'll head back to the alternate training site with just under a week remaining in the regular season, and whether he returns to the majors at some point in 2020 remains to be seen.

Ugly outing in second career start
Garrett (1-1) was charged with five runs (four earned) on five hits over 2.2 innings in a loss to the Nationals in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader. He struck out two and walked three.
ANALYSIS
Trea Turner and Kurt Suzuki touched Garrett up for homers early and the Nationals piled on for 10 additional runs against the bullpen. Garrett, the seventh overall pick in 2016, was much better in his debut Sept. 13, allowing one run while fanning six over five innings in a win over Philadelphia. Garrett was the designated 29th man for the doubleheader, so he is almost certainly head back to the alternate site in exchange for a fresh arm, though the transaction has not yet been made official.

ANALYSIS

Garrett was quite impressive in the outing, ceding one run on three hits and two walks while striking out six to come away victorious in his MLB debut. ANALYSIS
Garrett was strong over in his major-league debut, throwing 46-of-75 pitches for strikes. Only an Alec Bohm solo shot in the second inning tarnished his otherwise stellar outing. Garrett was the Marlins' 29th man for the doubleheader, so he's likely to return to the alternate training site.
