Raked by Rays
Bello (12-11) took the loss Wednesday, coughing up five runs on nine hits and two walks over six innings as the Red Sox were downed 5-0 by the Rays. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The Boston offense gave him no support, but Bello was far from sharp himself, tossing 62 of 100 pitches for strikes and serving up homers to Josh Lowe in the second inning and Isaac Paredes in the sixth. The 24-year-old right-hander wraps up his first full big-league campaign with a 4.24 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 132:45 K:BB through 157 innings, and he figures to be a big part of the team's rotation plans in 2024.

Stumbles in Texas
Bello (12-10) took the loss Wednesday, allowing eight runs on eight hits and four walks over three innings in a 15-5 loss against the Rangers. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
It was a brutal outing for Bello, who was tagged for a season-high eight runs. The Rangers did most of their damage in the second inning, scoring six runs on six hits, including a pair of homers. Coming into the day, Bello hadn't allowed more than three runs in his last six starts. His ERA is now up to 4.11 with a 1.32 WHIP and 129:43 K:BB across 27 starts (151 innings) this year. Bello will likely get one more turn in the rotation this season -- he's currently scheduled for a home matchup with the Rays early next week.

Earns another quality start
Bello (12-9) took the loss Friday, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk over six innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out 10.
ANALYSIS
The only blemish to Bello's line came when Vladimir Guerrero blasted a two-out three-run homer in the third. Otherwise, Bello was brilliant striking out career-high 10 batters and allowing only two additional baserunners on the evening. It marks his 15th quality start in 26 starts this season. The 24-year-old burgeoning star will take a solid 3.71 ERA into his next start, tentatively scheduled to take place next week in Texas.

Picks up 12th win
Bello (12-8) earned the win Sunday against the Orioles after he allowed three runs on seven hits and no walks over five innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander held the Baltimore lineup in check outside of the second inning, when he surrendered all three runs and four hits. Bello now has a 4-1 record in his past five starts and has a 3.14 ERA and 21:8 K:BB in 28.2 frames during that stretch. The 24-year-old tentatively lines up to next take the mound this weekend in Toronto.
Sep 4, 2023
Strikes out seven in win
Bello (11-8) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks over six innings Monday, striking out seven and earning a win over the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Bello stumbled out of the gate, yielding three runs in the first frame, but settled in for a quality start and a win. He tied his season best by forcing 16 whiffs and his seven strikeouts were the most he produced since Aug. 1. Over his last four outings, the 24-year-old righty has registered a 2.66 ERA, dropping his season mark to 3.61 through 137 frames. Bello's next outing is projected for a home matchup against the Orioles.
Aug 29, 2023
Falls to Houston
Bello (10-8) took the loss Tuesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings against the Astros. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
After allowing just two runs over his previous two outings, Bello found himself down 2-0 early after surrendering back-to-back homers to Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez in the first inning. The 24-year-old Bello rebounded with three scoreless frames before the Astros added an unearned run in the fifth. Overall, the right-hander sports a 3.57 ERA with a 1.28 WHIP and 106:36 K:BB across 23 starts (131 innings) this season. Bello will look to get back in the win column in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week in Tampa Bay.
Aug 24, 2023
Notches 10th win
Bello (10-7) earned the win Thursday, allowing one run on nine hits and three walks over seven innings against the Astros. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox gave Bello plenty of cushion in a 17-1 drubbing of the Astros, though he was impressive in his own right, allowing just one run for the third time in his last four starts. Bello lowered his ERA to 3.56 with a 1.28 WHIP and 104:34 K:BB across 22 starts (126.1 innings) this season. The 24-year-old right-hander will look to keep rolling in his next outing, currently scheduled as a home rematch with Houston early next week.
Aug 18, 2023
Bounces back against Yankees
Bello (9-7) allowed one run on six hits and one walk over six innings Friday, picking up a win over the Yankees. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Bello's teammates gifted him four runs in the top of the first inning before he threw a pitch and the young right-hander was on cruise control all night. He induced 10 swinging strikes on 98 pitches, with the only tally against him coming on a fielder's choice in the third. Bello continues to alternate good and bad starts so far in the second half, as he has lacked the consistency he showed prior to the All-Star break.
Aug 13, 2023
Hit hard in loss
Bello (8-7) took the loss Saturday as the Red Sox fell 6-2 to the Tigers, giving up four runs on nine hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out five without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander got taken deep by Kerry Carpenter in the second inning and Eric Haase in the fifth, continuing a recent trend that has seen Bello serve up 10 homers in seven starts since the beginning of July. Over that stretch, he's saddled with a 5.19 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 29:8 K:BB through 40.1 innings. Bello could have a tough time keeping the ball in the park in his next outing as well, which is likely to come next weekend in Yankee Stadium.
Aug 7, 2023
Yields one run
Bello allowed one run on six hits and two walks over 6.2 innings in Monday's win over Kansas City. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Bello cruised through six shutout frames before the Royals finally broke up the shutout in the seventh inning. The 24-year-old had been shaky over his last few outings, coughing up 16 runs over his previous 22 innings. After Monday's strong performance, his season ERA dropped back down to 3.64 through 19 starts. Bello is projected to face the Tigers at home this weekend.
Aug 4, 2023
Starting Monday vs. Royals
Bello will start Monday at home against the Royals, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
He could have started Sunday on normal rest, but the Red Sox will use a pair of openers and primary pitchers, likely Nick Pivetta and Chris Murphy, for the final two games of the series against the Blue Jays. Bello has a 3.73 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 48 strikeouts in 62.2 innings over his last 10 starts.
Aug 2, 2023
Escapes with win
Bello (8-6) allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out seven over six innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Bello didn't have his best, but he received enough run support to pick up his first win in three outings. In that span, he's surrendered 13 runs over 16 innings, including five home runs. The right-hander has been better overall with a 3.79 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 89:28 K:BB through 102 innings over 18 starts this season. Bello could start on regular rest this weekend at home versus Toronto, though he could also be pushed back a day for a more favorable matchup versus the Royals if the Red Sox want to insert a bullpen day.
Jul 27, 2023
Tosses quality start Wednesday
Bello pitched six innings against Atlanta on Wednesday, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four batters in a no-decision.
ANALYSIS
Bello got a few extra days between starts after going on paternity leave and flying home to the Dominican Republic last weekend. The right-hander was solid in his return, holding one of MLB's top offenses scoreless over five frames before surrendering a three-run homer to Ozzie Albies in the sixth. Bello completed that inning to collect his eighth quality start over his past nine outings, and he got off the hook for a loss thanks to a late Boston comeback. Bello has emerged as a rotation staple for the Red Sox this season, compiling a 3.66 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 82:26 K:BB over 96 frames while registering a 7-6 record.
Jul 26, 2023
Off paternity leave
Bello was reinstated from the paternity list and will start Wednesday against Atlanta, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello flew home to the Dominican Republic to witness the birth of his child. The right-hander has been Boston's most consistent starter and sports a 3.60 ERA over 16 starts.
Jul 21, 2023
Goes on paternity leave
Bello was placed on the paternity leave list Friday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello's girlfriend is due to give birth, so he will understandably be away from the club for a few days. The right-hander will be back with the Red Sox in time for his next scheduled outing Tuesday against Atlanta.
Jul 19, 2023
Stumbles in Oakland
Bello (7-6) took the loss Wednesday, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks over four innings against Oakland. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
It was a rough day for Bello, who allowed a season-high six runs on three two-run homers. Wednesday's outing ended a run of seven consecutive quality starts for the 24-year-old right-hander -- he'd posted a 2.51 ERA over that span. Bello's ERA is now up to 3.60 with a 1.22 WHIP and 78:24 K:BB through 16 starts (90 innings) this season. He'll look to get back on track in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week against Atlanta.
Jul 14, 2023
Improves to 7-5
Bello (7-5) yielded three runs on eight hits over six innings Friday, striking out five and earning a win over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Bello gave up one run through three innings before Cody Bellinger knocked a pair of solo homers against him. Since allowing five runs in his season debut, Bello has yielded three or fewer runs in 14 consecutive starts. He's posted an 18:2 K:BB over his last four outings, improving his season total to 75:22 through 86 innings. Bello will carry a 3.14 ERA into his next start, which is lined up to be in Oakland next week.
Jul 6, 2023
Continues providing length
Bello (6-5) picked up the win Wednesday in a 4-2 victory over the Rangers, allowing two runs on eight hits over seven innings. He struck out three without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old right-hander tied his career high by lasting 107 pitches (70 strikes), as Bello continues to emerge as a workhorse for the injury-wracked Boston rotation. He's tossed at least six innings in six straight starts since the beginning of June, posting a 2.21 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 29:8 K:BB through 40.2 innings over that stretch. The key to his recent success has been his ability to keep the ball in the park -- Adolis Garcia's sixth-inning shot Wednesday was the first homer Bello has served up since May 23. He'll get a well-earned breather over the All-Star break.
Jun 30, 2023
Loses no-hitter late, takes loss
Bello (5-5) took the loss against Miami on Thursday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out five batters over seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Bello pitched a gem, getting through seven innings without allowing a hit before yielding a pair of singles in to begin the eighth. Those hits resulted in his exit, and one of the runners came around to score, which was enough to saddle Bello with the loss in a game during which Boston failed to score. Despite the disappointing end result, it was another promising outing for the emerging hurler, who has allowed just one run in each of his past three appearances and has compiled five consecutive quality starts. During the latter stretch, he's registered a 2.14 ERA and 26:8 K:BB over 33.2 frames.
Jun 24, 2023
Adds cutter Friday
Bello introduced a cutter during Friday's 3-1 win over the White Sox, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. "I started working on the pitch this week," Bello said following the game.
ANALYSIS
Bello said he hadn't been able to control his slider the way he wanted to, so he tried out the cutter for the first time in a game situation. The 24-year-old right-hander adds the cutter to an arsenal that includes a four-seam and two-seam fastball along with a changeup and slider. Since allowing five runs over 2.2. innings in his first start of the season, Bello has been Boston's most consistent starter, posting a 2.70 ERA over 11 outings while never allowing more than three earned runs.
Jun 23, 2023
Wins again Friday
Bello (5-4) allowed a run on six hits and a walk while striking out five over 6.2 innings to earn the win Friday over the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Bello has turned in four straight quality starts in June, allowing seven runs over 26.2 innings in that span. While his luck wasn't great to begin the month, he's won his last two starts, and he's gone five outings without giving up a home run. The right-hander looks to be settling in at the major-league level midway through his second season. He owns a 3.27 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 62:21 K:BB through 66 innings across 12 starts this year. Bello is expected to make his next start at home versus the Marlins.
Jun 18, 2023
Fans eight in victory
Bello (4-4) allowed one run on four hits and three walks over seven innings Sunday, striking out eight and earning a win over the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Bello yielded a run in the first inning before settling in for a dominant performance. He struck out a career-high eight batters while tying his season best with 16 whiffs. After coughing up eight runs in his first two starts, Bello has given up three or fewer runs in nine straight starts, registering a 2.60 ERA during that span. The second-year righty now owns a 3.49 ERA and a 57:20 K:BB through 59.1 frames. Bello's next outing is lined up to be a road matchup with the White Sox.
Jun 17, 2023
Scheduled start postponed
Bello won't start Saturday against the Yankees as scheduled, as the game has been postponed due to rain, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The game will be rescheduled as part of a doubleheader Sunday. Bello will presumably start one of those two games, though the Red Sox have yet to announce their plans.
Jun 11, 2023
Provides quality start
Bello allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over seven innings in Sunday's win over the Yankees. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
After coughing up a two-run single in the second inning, Bello didn't allow another Yankee to reach scoring position. The 24-year-old has given up two or fewer earned runs in seven of his last eight starts, lowering his season ERA to 3.78 with a 49:17 K:BB through 52.1 innings. He tied his season high with seven innings pitched and has now thrown at least 95 pitches in six consecutive outings. Bello is currently lined up for another matchup with the Yankees, this time in Fenway Park.
Jun 5, 2023
Falls to Rays
Bello (3-4) took the loss Monday, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk over six innings against the Rays. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Bello notched his third quality start of the season, though ultimately took a third consecutive loss against Tampa Bay. The 24-year-old Bello had quietly put together a solid run of starts -- he hadn't allowed more than two earned runs in his previous six outings, pitching to a 2.53 ERA in that span. He now sports a 3.97 ERA with a 1.43 WHIP and 46:15 K:BB through nine starts (45.1 innings) this season.
May 31, 2023
Inefficient in Tuesday's loss
Bello (3-3) took the loss Tuesday as the Red Sox fell 9-8 to the Reds, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Despite the final score both starting pitchers were stingy, but Bello exited early after running his workload up to 97 pitches (61 pitches) and got stuck with the loss when Boston's rally came too late to tie things up. The 24-year-old right-hander has given up two earned runs or less in six straight starts, posting a 2.53 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 33:11 K:BB in 32 innings over that stretch. He could have a tough time keeping that streak going in his next outing, however, which is likely to be a home tilt against the Rays this weekend.
May 24, 2023
No help in loss
Bello (3-2) allowed two runs on six hits and struck out six without walking a batter over seven innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Bello's lone mistakes were solo home runs by Mickey Moniak and Matt Thaiss. The Red Sox's offense mustered just two hits and four walks in the 4-0 loss, giving Bello no support, which ended his three-game winning streak. This was his longest outing and his second quality start in seven outings. Bello has a 4.08 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 37:12 K:BB over 35.1 innings this season. It's expected he'll remain in the rotation once Garrett Whitlock (elbow) is activated from the injured list, so Bello can be tentatively projected for a home start versus the Reds next week.
May 18, 2023
Fans seven in victory
Bello (3-1) earned the win over Seattle on Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and five walks while striking out seven batters over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Bello wrestled with his control throughout the contest, walking a season-high five batters. However, he also displayed his excellent swing-and-miss arsenal, racking up 18 whiffs and a season-best seven punchouts. Bello struggled in his first two starts of the campaign, but he's since gone at least five innings in four straight appearances, notching three wins and recording a 2.57 ERA over that span. It's not certain that he'll remain in the rotation with the Red Sox starting staff rounding into full health, but he's at least made a compelling case for himself with the strong stretch.
May 11, 2023
Will start next week
Bello will start next Wednesday against the Mariners, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
There are a few moving parts to Boston's starting rotation, but manager Alex Cora has opted for a six-man rotation through the end of next week. James Paxton is entering the rotation Friday and by the time the Red Sox reach San Diego next weekend, Garrett Whitlock (elbow) could be ready to roll. Following the series against the Padres, Cora is expected to finalize a decision on a five-man rotation, which could include Bello starting in the minors. The Red Sox do not want to stall his development by putting him in the bullpen.
May 10, 2023
Steady in win
Bello (2-1) earned the win Wednesday over Atlanta, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts in six innings.
ANALYSIS
Bello kept Atlanta off the board for five innings, then struggled a bit in the sixth. Boston was able to get ahead for good in the seventh, giving Bello his second straight win and his first quality start of the season. The right-hander now has a 5.01 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 24:7 K:BB through 23.1 innings over five starts. James Paxton (hamstring) is set to return from the injured list Friday versus the Cardinals, so Bello's starting role could be in danger if the Red Sox opt to go forward with a five-man rotation.
May 4, 2023
Gets first win
Bello (1-1) allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out five over five innings, earning the win Thursday versus the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Bello had all the support he needed by the end of the second inning. He faded a bit in the fifth, giving up three runs in that frame, but the Red Sox's lead was never in danger. The right-hander didn't miss a start after developing a blister following last Saturday's outing versus the Guardians. Bello now has a 5.71 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 19:6 K:BB across 17.1 innings over four starts this season. He's lined up for a tough road start in Atlanta next week.
May 1, 2023
Cleared to start Thursday
Bello (finger) is listed as the Red Sox's starting pitcher for Thursday's game against the Blue Jays at Fenway Park.
ANALYSIS
Bello's inclusion on the pitching schedule for the Red Sox's four-game series with Toronto confirms that the blister he developed on his right index finger in his last outing Saturday versus Cleveland isn't expected to be an issue moving forward. Before picking up the abrasion on his finger, Bello was in the midst of his best start of the season, as he limited the Guardians to one run on five hits and two walks while striking out six in five innings.
Apr 30, 2023
Develops blister
Bello developed a blister on his right index finger during Saturday's 8-7 extra-inning win over the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
The blister became an issue in the fifth inning when a trainer visited the mound just before Bello made a nice fielding play to end the inning. "I couldn't throw the slider because of my finger so it was good to be able to get out of that inning with the play that I made," Bello said. That ended his day after five strong innings. There wasn't much concern from manager Alex Cora or the pitcher following the game, which suggests he'll be ready to take his next turn in the rotation, which comes due Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
Apr 29, 2023
Shuts down Guardians
Bello did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over five innings against Cleveland. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Bello returned from Triple-A after making a pair of starts earlier in April to take Garrett Whitlock's (elbow) spot in the rotation and turned in his best outing of the season. He set a new season-high in punchouts while also allowing less than three runs for the first time in 2023. For as long as Whitlock and James Paxton (hamstring) are sidelined, Bello should be the fifth rotation piece for Boston but doesn't have enough strikeout juice to warrant short-term fantasy consideration.
Apr 28, 2023
Back in majors
Bello was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Just four days after being optioned to Triple-A, Bello is back with the major-league squad due to Garrett Whitlock (elbow) landing on the 15-day injured list Friday. Bello has been hit around quite a bit in his two major-league starts, allowing 13 hits and eight earned runs through 7.1 innings.
Apr 24, 2023
Demoted after two starts
The Red Sox optioned Bello to Triple-A Worcester on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Boston will at least temporarily bring an end to its six-man rotation, with Tanner Houck sticking around as the team's No. 5 starter over Bello. After opening the season on the injured list while recovering from forearm inflammation, Bello was activated April 17 and made two starts for the Red Sox last week. Bello was blitzed for five earned runs over 2.2 innings in a Patriots' Day loss to the Angels that was marred by poor weather, and he displayed only marginal improvement in his return to the mound Sunday, when he gave up three earned runs on five hits and two walks over 4.2 innings in a win over Milwaukee. The Red Sox recalled lefty reliever Brennan Bernardino from Worcester to replace Bello on the 26-man active roster.
Apr 24, 2023
Shows improvement in second start
Bello allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.2 innings Sunday against the Brewers. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Bello kept the Brewers' bats in check until the fourth inning, when Brian Anderson sent a first-pitch slider over the fence in right center to get the Crew on the board. More issues came about in the fifth, and he wound up allowing two more runs on three hits before being replaced by Richard Bleier to close out the frame. It wasn't a spectacular outing by any means, but Sunday's outing was certainly a step in the right direction from his 2023 debut, when he gave up five earned runs in just 2.2 innings. The 23-year-old is in line to next take the mound in a home start against the Guardians.
Apr 17, 2023
Struggles in season debut
Bello (0-1) took the loss Monday, allowing five runs on eight hits with one walk over 2.2 innings against the Angels. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old began his season debut by yielding a three-run blast to Hunter Renfroe in the first inning. Bellow would end his day with five earned runs but showed promise as he struck out five batters before being forced to exit the game due to an extended rain delay. Despite the disappointing performance, the right-hander will have a chance to redeem himself in his next start, scheduled for this weekend against Milwaukee.
Apr 17, 2023
Activated for Monday start
Bello was activated from the 15-day injured list by the Red Sox on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Bello is set to make his season debut for the Red Sox during Monday's Patriots' Day game in Boston against the Angels. The right-hander was excellent in his one rehab start after recovering from a forearm issue, striking out four over six frames of one-run ball. Fantasy managers in standard leagues might want to take more of a wait-and-see approach with Bello, but he should be rostered most everywhere.
Apr 15, 2023
Projected to start Monday
Bello (forearm) is listed as the projected starter for Monday's series finale against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Bello will be making his first start after opening the season on the injured list. Fantasy managers will want to take note that Monday is Boston's traditional Patriots' Day game, which kicks off at 11:10 AM.
Apr 14, 2023
In line to start Monday
Bello (forearm) is lined up to start for the Red Sox on Monday against the Angels, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello got a late start to the season while working his way back from a forearm issue, but he was lights-out in his lone rehab outing to clear the way for his return to Boston's rotation. He's a viable addition in deeper fantasy leagues. With Bello taking the ball Monday, Chris Sale will get an extra day of rest and pitch Tuesday.
Apr 12, 2023
Team noncommittal to next start
Red Sox manager Alex Cora was noncommittal Wednesday when asked whether Bello's (forearm) next start would come in the majors, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello was excellent in his last rehab start with Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, tossing six innings of one-run ball while striking out four and hitting 97 mph on the radar gun. Cora noted of Bello that "now it's just seeing how he bounces back." It sounds like the righty will probably join Boston's rotation for his next outing as long as he recovers well, but we should find out officially in the next day or two. Bello would be lined up to face the Angels at Fenway Park either on Sunday or Monday.
Apr 12, 2023
Shines in rehab start
Bello (forearm) allowed four hits and one run while striking out four and walking none over six innings for Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Bello made his second rehab start and upped his pitch count to 80 (51 strikes) while hitting 97 MPH. This may have been his final rehab outing, and the right-hander could rejoin the Red Sox in time for a start against the Angels on Sunday or Monday, which is the team's traditional Patriots Day game that starts at 11:10 AM.
Apr 8, 2023
Next rehab start set
Bello (forearm) is scheduled to make a rehab start Tuesday for Triple-A Worcester, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander threw 72 pitches across five innings during an extended spring training appearance earlier this week, and he's scheduled to progress to six innings Tuesday. Bello could be cleared to return from the injured list if all goes well with Worcester.
Apr 6, 2023
Needs another rehab start
Bello (forearm) will need at least one more rehab start before being an option for the Red Sox' rotation, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello threw 72 pitches over five innings in an extended spring training outing Wednesday and will likely move up to Triple-A Worcester next. He should get closer to 90 or so pitches in that start as he continues to stretch back out. That could potentially put Bello in line to rejoin the Red Sox next weekend, although it might not be guaranteed that he's immediately added to the major-league club.
Apr 5, 2023
Progresses in rehab
Bello (forearm) through 72 pitches over five innings in an extended spring training start Wednesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The successful outing suggests Bello needs only one more minor-league rehab start before joining the Boston rotation. Right forearm inflammation delayed the second-year pitcher's progress from the beginning of spring training, but he appears very close to beginning his 2023 campaign.
Apr 1, 2023
Rehab start coming Wednesday
Bello will make a rehab start Wednesday for Triple-A Worcester, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello is on the 15-day injured list because of right forearm inflammation, but it is not expected to be a long absence. The right-hander will likely make two rehab appearances for Worcester, and then he'll have a chance to rejoin the Boston rotation in the middle of April.
Mar 30, 2023
Goes on IL
The Red Sox placed Bello (forearm) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Though he'll open the season on the shelf while he recovers from right forearm inflammation, Bello doesn't look as though he'll be in store for an extended absence. He tossed three innings in a minor-league spring game for Double-A Portland last Friday and should be ready to head out on a rehab assignment shortly after the minor-league regular season begins this weekend. Like Bello, fellow starting pitchers Garrett Whitlock (hip) and James Paxton (hamstring) are opening the season on the IL and are tracking toward similarly brief stays, so Bello may not be in line for a spot in the big-league rotation once he's formally activated.
Mar 25, 2023
Ramps up against minor leaguers
Bello (forearm) threw three innings for Double-A Portland on a back field Friday.
ANALYSIS
Bello increased his pitch count to 42 and will continue to ramp up in minor-league games before the Red Sox activate him. He's expected to join Boston's starting rotation mid-to-late April.
Mar 23, 2023
Beginning season on IL
Bello (forearm) will begin the regular season on the 10-day injured list as he builds up for a starter's workload, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Bello, who battled forearm tightness earlier in the spring, will spend at least a couple more weeks building up for the regular season. Once ready, the right-handed prospect figures to enter Boston's rotation and build upon his rookie campaign in 2022, when he posted a 4.71 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in 57.1 innings.

Fans three in debut
Bello (forearm) struck out three over two scoreless and hitless relief innings in Sunday's spring game against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Bello made his Grapefruit League debut after dealing with forearm tightness at the start of spring training. The right-hander soothed any concerns Sunday, when he set down all six batters faced over 25 pitches. According to Ian Browne of MLB.com, this might be Bello's last Grapefruit League outing. The Red Sox are expected to place him on the injured list to start the regular season and want to allocate innings to those pitchers that will break camp on the major-league roster. In the meantime, Bello can build up his pitch count on the back fields against minor-league opponents.
Mar 18, 2023
Spring debut coming Sunday
Bello (forearm) will make his spring debut Sunday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He threw two innings on the backfields Wednesday and is scheduled to throw another couple innings Sunday after Nick Pivetta exits. It was reported back on March 4 that Bello was unlikely to be able to ramp up in time to make the Opening Day roster, but that is yet to be officially determined.
Mar 15, 2023
Set for game action Wednesday
Bello (forearm) is scheduled to throw two innings during a minor-league spring game Wednesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old progressed to facing live hitters over the weekend and will now advance to game action. Bello threw 17 pitches during Saturday's session of live BP, so he still has significant ramping up to do before he's cleared for a full workload. The right-hander could begin the season on the injured list, though it doesn't appear his absence would be a lengthy one.
Mar 12, 2023
Throws inning of live BP
Bello (forearm) threw an inning of live batting practice Saturday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello fired off 17 pitches to batters and is next expected to throw two innings of batting practice Wednesday. His first spring start is targeted for March 19 or 20. As such, Bello is expected to open the season on the injured list.
Mar 8, 2023
Ready for live batting practice
Bello (forearm) has been cleared to throw live batting practice, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello first started feeling soreness in his right forearm back in mid-February, although he's been pain-free for a while. The young right-hander is not expected to be ready in time for Opening Day, but being ready to face hitters means he's making real progress. He should be able to get in a Grapefruit League start or two before the schedule runs out.
Mar 4, 2023
May miss Opening Day
Bello (forearm) is unlikely to make the Opening Day roster, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-handed prospect first felt forearm soreness in a mid-February bullpen session and has been behind schedule ever since. Recent updates have suggested Bello is issue-free now, but the lost time in February was likely enough to delay his buildup and make Opening Day an unrealistic goal.
Mar 2, 2023
Clearer timetable next week
Bello's (forearm) status and timetable are expected to become clearer next week, Red Sox manager Alex Cora told Ian Browne of MLB.com Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Bello had some right forearm soreness crop up in mid-February, although he resumed throwing off a mound last weekend and hasn't had any issues since then. Realistically, he's running short on time to get built up for Boston's rotation, but if he needs an injured list stint it doesn't seem like it would be a long one. With Bello and Garrett Whitlock (hip) a little behind, it could open up a rotation spot for Tanner Houck, at least initially.
Mar 1, 2023
Throws successful bullpen
Bello (forearm) was able to throw a bullpen session without issue on Wednesday, John Tomase of NBC Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello told reporters on Tuesday that he's throwing at about 80 percent and that he feels healthy. The right-hander has been slowed in camp with soreness in his right forearm, but looks on track to appear in Grapefruit League games before the exhibition season ends, and could very well be a part of the Boston rotation when the regular campaign begins.
Feb 26, 2023
Completes bullpen session
Bello (forearm) threw a bullpen session Sunday with no apparent issues, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello was briefly shut down from throwing after he experienced some soreness in his forearm during mid-February, but he's now back on the mound after playing catch over the past week. The Red Sox are likely to remain cautious with the 23-year-old righty this early in camp, but at the point it appears he's avoided any serious issues.
Feb 25, 2023
Will throw off mound
Bello (forearm) will throw off a mound Sunday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello has been playing catch this week after he was shut down for a week following a bout of tightness in his forearm. Sunday's mound session is expected to indicate if the tightness is a non-issue. The right-hander is competing for a spot in the rotation.
Feb 24, 2023
Feels better
Bello (forearm) said Thursday he "feels way better" and is on track to be ready for the start of the regular season, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bell, who was shut down for nearly a week after experiencing tightness in his forearm, resumed throwing Monday but not yet off a mound. "I'm just trying to stretch my arm and trying to get it stretched enough so I can start the bullpens (again)," Bello said. He also talked about his offseason work on the curveball, of which he threw just five in 2022. The goal is to make it slower; that pitch averaged 80.2 MPH last season, per Baseball Savant, but he'd like it sitting in the 75 to 79 range. The 23-year-old right-hander posted a 4.71 ERA (2.93 FIP) over 13 outings, including 11 starts. Bello was especially good in September, pitching to a 2.59 ERA in six starts.
Feb 22, 2023
Extends progression
Bello (forearm) played catch from 75 feet Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello was shut down for nearly a week before playing catch Monday. He extended the session Tuesday, with manager Alex Cora indicating everything went well. Bello, one of seven candidates for the rotation, is expected to take a little longer than the rest to join the spring rotation.
Feb 21, 2023
Throws from flat ground
Bello (forearm) threw off flat ground Monday.
ANALYSIS
This was the first time Bello has thrown a baseball in nearly a week after the right-hander experienced tightness following a side session. Boston manager Alex Cora said the club will evaluate Bello on Tuesday before determining a next step.
Feb 19, 2023
Set to throw Monday
Manager Alex Cora said Bello (forearm) "will be ready" to throw off flat ground Monday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old was recently shut down from throwing after he experienced some soreness in his forearm during a bullpen session, but he'll quickly restart his throwing program. Bello could return to the mound later if the week if all goes well during Monday's session.
Feb 17, 2023
Nursing forearm soreness
Bello has been shut down after feeling soreness in his right forearm during his last bullpen session, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said it's "nothing to alarm" and that there are no current plans to have imaging taken of Bello's arm. "We're very confident Monday he's back on his throwing program," Cora added. It's good to hear that the club is optimistic this isn't a long-term concern, but any arm-related issue obviously is worrisome. More should be known about Bello's status next week.
Oct 2, 2022
Hit hard in Toronto
Bello (2-8) took the loss Saturday, allowing four runs on 10 hits and two walks over four innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Bello allowed an RBI single and a two-run double from Danny Jansen en route to putting Boston in a 4-0 deficit through three innings. Prior to this outing, the righty had allowed three runs or fewer in seven straight starts. The 23-year-old has pitched six innings or more just twice during his rookie campaign.
Sep 26, 2022
Tough-luck loser
Bello (2-7) took the loss during Sunday's 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Yankees, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in six innings.
ANALYSIS
Bello surrendered one run on two hits in the fourth inning and another run on an error in the sixth before the game prematurely ended due to weather. Despite three losses in his last five starts, the 23-year-old has compiled a stellar 1.65 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 27.1 innings this month. Bello sports a 4.39 ERA and 1.69 WHIP with 51 strikeouts in 53.1 innings across 12 games and six starts. He's scheduled to take the mound again next weekend in Toronto.
Sep 20, 2022
Navigates trouble in win
Bello (2-6) earned the victory Tuesday in Cincinnati, striking out five in five innings while allowing a run on eight hits and two walks.
ANALYSIS
Bello was able to pitch his way out of jams all game. At one point seven out of 11 Cincinnati batters reached base but only one came around and scored -- TJ Friedl on his solo homer. The home run was the first Bello allowed in 47.1 big-league innings. Since joining Boston's rotation on Aug. 24, he's posted a 2.67 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 32:12 K:BB in 30.1 innings across six starts.
Sep 15, 2022
Takes loss after poor fielding
Bello (1-6) took the loss Wednesday with zero earned runs on six hits and one walk over five innings against the Yankees. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Bello did not allow an earned run as the three Yankees tallies under his watch were scored following a fielding error earlier in the inning and a throwing error on Gleyber Torres' RBI single. The 23-year-old rookie has hopped back and forth between the minors and the major leagues since his debut July 6. The righty has improved over his last six outings, recording a 2.77 ERA over 26 innings.
Sep 9, 2022
Falls to 1-5
Bello (1-5) allowed three runs on three hits and four walks over 5.1 innings Friday, striking out seven and taking a loss against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Bello looked terrific through five shutout frames before running into trouble in the sixth. He loaded the bases and was charged with all three runs after being removed from the game. His seven punchouts tied a career best set Aug. 24 against Toronto. The right-handed rookie slightly lowered his ERA to 5.79 with a 36:20 through 37.1 innings. Bello is projected to face the Yankees at home next week.
Sep 4, 2022
Earns first big-league win
Bello (1-4) picked up the win Saturday, allowing three hits and one walk over six scoreless innings against the Rangers. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old earned his first career win in his eighth major-league appearance (sixth start). A top pitching prospect in the organization, Bello has endured his fair share of growing pains this season. He should be considered a volatile option, though Bello may finally be finding his footing at the big-league level.
Aug 29, 2022
Falls to 0-4
Bello (0-4) yielded three runs on five hits and three walks over four innings Monday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Bello worked through three scoreless frames before Minnesota finally broke through in the fourth on Jake Cave's RBI sacrifice fly. The 23-year-old rookie was charged with two more runs in the fifth after he put two runners on base without recording an out and was removed. Bello's ERA now sits at an unsightly 7.27 with a 24:15 K:BB through 26 innings. For now, he's projected to face the Rangers at home this weekend.
Aug 28, 2022
Gets another turn through rotation
Bello is scheduled to start Monday's game in Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
With Nathan Eovaldi (shoulder) still on the injured list and with Josh Winckowski having recently been sent back to Triple-A Worcester, Bello will be making his second straight turn through the rotation. In his return from his own stint on the IL last Wednesday, Bello turned in the best outing of his young career, striking out seven and allowing two earned runs while scattering six hits and a walk over five frames.
Aug 24, 2022
Strikes out seven in no-decision
Bello allowed two runs on six hits, one walk and seven strikeouts over five innings in Wednesday's 3-2 extra-innings loss versus Toronto. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
In his first start since being activated from the injured list with a groin injury, Bello turned the best start of his young career. He needed just 65 pitches to get through five innings and set a season high in strikeouts with seven. He will likely face the Twins next week if he sticks in the rotation.
Aug 24, 2022
Activated ahead of start
The Red Sox reinstated Bello (groin) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Boston optioned starting pitcher Josh Winckowski to Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move, a transaction that may hint that Bello will be installed as a permanent member of the rotation. Bello, who has been on the shelf since sustaining a left groin strain in a relief appearance Aug. 3, built up to 4.1 innings in his second rehab start at Triple-A last Friday, so he shouldn't face any major restrictions as he takes the hill Wednesday. However, started Rich Hill is well rested and could be deployed as a piggyback option behind Bello, which could make it difficult for the rookie to factor into the decision.
Aug 24, 2022
Coming off IL to start Wednesday
Manager Alex Cora said Bello (groin) will be activated off the 15-day injured list to start Wednesday against the Blue Jays, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old landed on the shelf Aug. 4 with a strained left groin, and he'll rejoin Boston's rotation after a two-start rehab stint in the minors. Bello covered 4.1 frames in his last rehab outing and has an 8.47 ERA across five big-league appearances this season. The rookie could be used in conjunction with veteran lefty Rich Hill.
Aug 23, 2022
Could come off IL on Wednesday
Manager Alex Cora indicated Bello (groin) could be activated off the 15-day injured list to pitch Wednesday against the Blue Jays, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Boston hasn't officially named a starter for Wednesday, but Bello and veteran Rich Hill are expected to start and piggyback in some configuration. Bello made his major-league debut in early July and has an 8.47 ERA, 2.29 WHIP and 15:11 K:BB in 17 innings across his first five appearances.
Aug 18, 2022
Rehab shifts to Triple-A
Bello (groin) will make a rehab start at Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello made a rehab start at Double-A Portland on Sunday and gave up a run on two hits and no walks while striking out six in 3.2 innings. He's been on the injured list since Aug. 3, so he should have a chance to rejoin the Red Sox following Friday's outing.
Aug 14, 2022
Rehab start scheduled
Bello (groin) will make a minor-league rehab start for Double-A Portland on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Bello exited his outing Aug. 3 against Houston with a left groin strain and was placed on the 15-day injured list.
Aug 4, 2022
Goes on IL with groin strain
The Red Sox placed Bello (groin) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Bello suffered the injury during his relief appearance in Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the Astros, when the Red Sox intended to deploy him as a piggyback pitcher behind starter Rich Hill. He'll now be sidelined for at least the next two and a half weeks, and once he's activated, Bello may not have a spot on the active roster, much less one in the rotation. Hill's return from the IL on Wednesday gave Boston five healthy starting options, and Michael Wacha (shoulder) could be activated by the middle of August and will push Bello another rung down the depth chart at that time.
Aug 3, 2022
Dealing with left groin strain
Bello was removed from Wednesday's game against the Astros due to a left groin strain, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox hoped that Bello would be able to eat up some innings behind starter Rich Hill during Wednesday's matchup to give the rest of the bullpen some rest, but Bello exited after throwing just two-thirds of an inning. It's not yet clear whether the right-hander will require a trip to the injured list following his diagnosis.
Aug 3, 2022
Departs with injury
Bello was removed from his relief appearance in Wednesday's game against the Astros due to an apparent injury, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. He struck out two of the four hitters he faced and allowed a double and a base hit.
ANALYSIS
Bello was originally scheduled to start Wednesday, but the Red Sox later scrapped those plans and had Rich Hill open the contest after he ultimately stayed with Boston following Tuesday's trade deadline. Hill was still on a restricted pitch count in his first start back from the injured list and tossed only three innings before exiting, as the Red Sox were counting on Bello to piggyback him. Instead, Bello's day ended after just 19 pitches, which will force the Red Sox to use their other relievers more than anticipated. The team should provide an updated diagnosis for Bello's injury later in the day.
Aug 3, 2022
Won't start Wednesday
Bello has been scratched from his scheduled start for Wednesday's game against the Astros, with Rich Hill (knee) now in line to get the starting nod for Boston, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Boston reinstated Hill from the 15-day injured list Monday, but the Red Sox didn't immediately make him available to start or pitch out of the bullpen while the team waited for Tuesday's trade deadline. With the veteran southpaw ultimately staying put at the deadline, he'll now slot back into the rotation while Bello heads to the bullpen. The Red Sox still intend to develop Bello as a starter, so it wouldn't be surprising if he's optioned to Triple-A Worcester at some point in the near future so he can resume making regular turns through the WooSox rotation.
Aug 1, 2022
Set to start Wednesday
Bello is expected to start Wednesday against the Astros, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello worked behind an opener in his last outing, but it appears he will open the game on the mound in his next appearance.
Jul 30, 2022
Takes loss as primary pitcher
Bello (0-3) was charged with the loss Friday versus the Brewers after giving up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks across 4.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old replaced Austin Davis during the third inning with the game still scoreless, but Milwaukee scored single tallies in the sixth and seventh to put Bello on the hook for the loss. Bello made his big-league debut in early July and has an 8.82 ERA, 2.27 WHIP and 13:11 K:BB in 16.1 innings over his first four outings.
Jul 29, 2022
Available out of bullpen Friday
Bello will be available out of the bullpen behind opener Austin Davis during Friday's game against the Brewers, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello was initially listed as the starter for Friday's matchup, but the Red Sox will instead choose to utilize Davis in an opening role. Bello hasn't been very sharp to begin his major-league career, posting a 10.50 ERA and 2.50 WHIP in 12 innings over three starts.
Jul 28, 2022
Picking up another start
Bello is slated to start Friday's series opener with the Brewers in Boston, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello will be getting his second straight turn through the rotation and his fourth start of the season overall with the big club not on the basis of merit, but because Boston has four other starting pitchers on the injured list. Though the 23-year-old right-hander is one of the Red Sox's most highly regarded prospects, he hasn't found much success in his initial three outings in the big leagues. He's covered exactly four innings each time out, allowing no fewer than four earned runs in any of those contests while walking nearly as many batters (eight) as he's struck out (nine).
Jul 25, 2022
Allows five runs in loss
Bello (0-2) took the loss against Toronto on Sunday, allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out two and walking two over four innings.
ANALYSIS
Bello was yanked after giving up five earned runs across four frames Sunday. The young righty threw 41 of 67 pitches for strikes but allowed 11 baserunners and struck out just two batters. George Springer and Cavan Biggio were also able to swipe second base while he was on the mound. Bello has had a rough rookie campaign so far. In 12 innings, he has allowed 14 earned runs, although none have come via the long ball. Bello has a bloated 10.50 ERA, but could still continue to pick up starts for the Red Sox with so many of their starters on the shelf.
Jul 23, 2022
Officially starting Sunday
Bello is starting Sunday's game against the Blue Jays, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Alex Cora indicated Friday that there was a "good chance" that Bello started Sunday's series finale against Toronto, and the right-hander will officially make his third major-league start. The right-hander has posted a 10.13 ERA and 2.38 WHIP in eight innings over two starts for the Red Sox this year.
Jul 23, 2022
Likely to start Sunday
Bello is likely to start Sunday's series finale against the Blue Jays, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. "There's a good chance he'll start Sunday," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said before Friday's game.
ANALYSIS
Bello was recalled Friday, and Red Sox manager Alex Cora avoided using his length in an embarrassing 28-5 loss to Toronto. The right-hander has pitched well in the minors this season, posting a 2.35 ERA over 16 outings (15 starts) at Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, but has struggled in two MLB starts (10.13 ERA, six walks, eight IP).
Jul 22, 2022
Back in majors
Bello was recalled by the Red Sox on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Bello was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on July 12, one day after he surrendered five earned runs across four innings against the Rays. He'll likely be needed in the rotation to take the place of Chris Sale (finger), who was placed on the injured list Friday. Bello has maintained a 2.82 ERA and 1.16 WHIP across 54.1 innings with Worcester this season.
Jul 12, 2022
Returns to Triple-A
The Red Sox optioned Bello to Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello made two starts during his first big-league stint and allowed nine runs in eight innings while striking out seven and walking six. The prospect clearly wasn't ready for a promotion. Rather, he filled in for Boston's injury-riddled rotation. Barring more big-league injuries, Bello figures to pitch the remainder of 2022 at Triple-A.
Jul 12, 2022
Roughed up by Rays
Bello didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 10-5 loss to the Rays, coughing up five runs on seven hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The rookie wasn't really fooling anyone in his second big-league start, managing only eight swinging strikes among his 82 pitches, and Tampa Bay jumped on Bello for multiple runs in each of the first two frames. The 23-year-old now sports a 10.13 ERA through his first eight MLB innings, and he'll need to figure things out quickly -- or at least get a chance to face a different opponent, as Bello has seen the Rays in both his outings so far -- if he wants to avoid being sent back down to Triple-A Worcester once Boston's rotation gets a bit healthier.
Jul 7, 2022
Slated to make another start
Bello will start Monday's game against the Rays, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello made his major-league debut Wednesday against Tampa Bay and allowed four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three in four innings. Despite his lackluster results, he'll get at least one turn through the rotation during Monday's series opener at Tropicana Field. The right-hander was dominant in the minors early in the year, posting a 2.33 ERA, 114:33 K:BB and 1.02 WHIP in 85 innings between the Double-A and Triple-A clubs.
Jul 7, 2022
Loses in debut
Bello (0-1) took the loss to the Rays on Wednesday, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out two and walking three across four innings.
ANALYSIS
Bello allowed four earned runs in his debut game and began his MLB career with a loss. He threw 45 of 79 pitches for strikes across four frames. The rookie allowed four runs thanks to a single and two doubles, but it was a good sign that he did not allow a homer. If the Red Sox decide to give him another turn in the rotation, he tentatively lines up to face the Rays again next week.
Jul 6, 2022
Officially recalled Wednesday
Bello was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Bello will make his major-league debut as the starter during Wednesday's series finale against the Rays following a strong showing in the minors to begin the year. The right-hander is among Boston's top prospects and has posted a 2.33 ERA, 114:33 K:BB and 1.02 WHIP in 85 innings over 15 appearances (14 starts) between the Double-A and Triple-A clubs this season. Since several of Boston's starters are dealing with injuries, Bello should have a chance to draw additional starts if he performs well Wednesday.
Jul 4, 2022
Making MLB debut Wednesday
Bello has been confirmed as the starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Rays, Katie Morrison of Mass Live Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello has dominated at both Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester in 2022, posting a 2.33 ERA and 1.04 WHIP with a 114:33 K:BB over 85 innings across the two levels. He's proven that he's ready for a shot at the big leagues, and he'll get his opportunity Wednesday at Fenway Park.
Jul 4, 2022
Could debut Wednesday
Bello could start Wednesday's game against the Rays, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello has sparkled this season at both the Double-A and Triple-A levels, and Boston could be ready to give its top pitching prospect his first chance to show what he can do at the top level.
May 31, 2022
Winning at Worcester
Bello allowed two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out six over five innings in Triple-A Worcester's win over Lehigh Valley.
ANALYSIS
Bello, who was recently promoted from Double-A Portland, has won all three starts since joining the WooSox. The 23-year-old righty has allowed six runs on 14 hits and eight walks over 17 innings over his three outings.
May 19, 2022
Fans 10 in Triple-A debut
Bello allowed two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out 10 over six innings for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Bello, who was promoted from Double-A Portland earlier in this week, showed the WooSox what all the buzz was about in his debut at the Triple-A level. He whiffed the first batter faced on a 98 mph fastball and dazzled the rest of the way. It was the 11th double-digit strikeout game during the 23-year-old right-hander's career.
May 16, 2022
Advances to Triple-A
Bello was promoted to Triple-A Worcester on Monday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello is one of Boston's more interesting pitching prospects. The 22-year-old righty impressed in six starts for Double-A Portland to begin the season, striking out 32.6 percent of opposing batters en route to a 1.60 ERA. If he continues to impress at the Triple-A level, it's possible he gets the chance to make his big-league debut later this season.
May 6, 2022
Throws seven-inning no-no
Bello allowed one unearned run on three walks while striking out five over seven hitless innings Thursday in the second game of a doubleheader for Double-A Portland.
ANALYSIS
Bello lasted seven innings for just the second time in his career and did it with a flourish. The right-hander is off to a flying start for the Sea Dogs, posting a 1.95 ERA with 37 strikeouts and 11 walks over 27.2 innings.
Apr 30, 2022
Missing bats in Portland
Bello allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out eight over 5.1 innings for Double-A Portland on Friday.
ANALYSIS
The 22-year-old Bello, who is on Boston's 40-man roster, has struck out 38.5 percent of the batters he's faced through four starts (32 strikeouts, 83 batters). Friday's wayward walk total was the first time Bello's encountered command issues. His changeup has become a plus pitch, which is effective alongside a triple-digit fastball, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. "It has very good action," Red Sox assistant general manager Eddie Romero said. "Out of his hand, it looks like a fastball and then at the last minute, it tends to fade into one direction or the other. So that's what really makes it tough. Even if you're sitting on it, it's still a good pitch." Bello was named the organization's minor league Pitcher of the Year in 2021, when he went 7-3 with a 3.87 ERA and 1.28 WHIP over 21 starts combined between High-A Greenville and Portland. He averaged 12.4 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9.
Apr 4, 2022
Moved to Portland
The Red Sox transferred Bello from Triple-A Worcester to Double-A Portland on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Boston initially optioned Bello to Worcester when he was cut from big-league camp March 25, but he'll instead open the campaign in Portland. The 22-year-old righty spent the majority of the 2021 campaign at Portland, producing a 4.66 ERA and 1.42 WHIP across 63.2 innings in 15 starts with the affiliate.
Mar 25, 2022
Optioned to Triple-A
Bello was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Bello made just one Grapefruit League appearance for the Red Sox this spring and struck out one in a perfect relief inning. He'll begin the regular season in the minors but is one of the team's top prospects and will likely be in the mix to make his major-league debut at some point this year.
