The good news is the two sides have come to an agreement on the financial terms of a long-term deal with a package of about $106 million, Biertempfel says. Reynolds has expressed a willingness to back-load the contract and because he's also relented more than the club on the dollar ask, he wants the Pirates to include an opt-out clause. Pittsburgh has historically been opposed to including opt-outs in contracts, but it's possible they might make an exception here. Biertempfel intimates that the Pirates might like to have a deal in place prior to their home opener on April 7. Reynolds -- who is currently under team control through 2025 -- requested a trade back in December when negotiations fell apart, but it seems there's real momentum for a deal now if the two sides can overcome the opt-out hurdle.

And it sounds like he might indeed be in left field -- not center -- for the Pirates when the regular season gets underway.

It's encouraging to see Reynolds swinging a bat after he was initially shut down during his IL stint, but manager Derek Shelton said Friday that the outfielder is still restricted. However, Shelton hopes Reynolds will be able to return "sooner rather than later." A better idea of the 27-year-old's return timetable should come into focus once he's able to ramp up his activity level.

Reynolds and Cole Tucker were both added to the COVID-19 IL list Tuesday, but the former player looks as though he was able to quickly test out of MLB's protocols for the virus. His absence for only one game is a fortunate break for fantasy managers who kept him active in weekly lineups that locked Monday, as Reynolds will likely start in each of the Pirates' remaining five games this week. The 2021 All-Star heads into Wednesday's contest with a .190 average, two home runs, four runs and three RBI on his ledger for the season.

The Pirates placed Reynolds on the COVID-19 injured list Tuesday.

The virus appears to be making its way around the Pittsburgh clubhouse, as Reynolds and Cole Tucker were placed on the list, while multiple staff members are also away from the team as the Pirates kick off a three-game series with the Brewers. Reynolds will be eligible to rejoin the Pirates once he completes a quarantine and is no longer testing positive for the virus, but fantasy managers should prepare for the possibility of missing the team's entire six-game week. Jake Marisnick and minor-league call-up Jack Suwinski could fill near-everyday roles in the outfield while both Reynolds and Tucker aren't available.

The 2021 All-Star never hit lower than third in the batting order in 2021 and has hit second in every spring training game this season. As long as he's a Pirate, he will likely be at the top of the order.

Reynolds lifted his batting average back over the .300 mark (.301) after it had slipped to its lowest mark since June 16 (.293). He'll get three home games each against Detroit and Washington staffs in the coming week.

Cole Tucker will man center field and lead off against right-hander Kyle Hendricks. Reynolds has cooled since the break, but he established himself as one of the few long-term building blocks on the Pirates' current roster with his All-Star first half, and his OPS still sits just shy of .900 for the season. He will get the occasional day off down the stretch as the team wants to be sure he's in a good spot heading into the offseason.

He's hit .217 with no homers in 52 plate appearances, but has had success against Cubs starters Zach Davies and Alec Mills.

Manager Derek Shelton believes Reynolds will report to training camp, even though his wife is pregnant and he has an opt-out clause for the 2020 season, DK Pittsburgh Sports reports.

"I'm planning on everybody being in camp, and definitely respect the wishes of anybody that is high risk or has a spouse that's high risk and definitely support people in the decisions that they make because it's life decisions," Shelton said. "We have had no indication from anybody [that they wouldn't attend] as of now." Reynolds slashed .314/.377/.503 in 2019 and is expected to serve as the team's left fielder. His absence would leave a huge void in Pittsburgh's lineup.

Reynolds reached base three times Friday, going 1-for-1 with a single and two walks against Baltimore.

The outfielder slashed .314/.377/.503 with 16 homers and three steals in 546 plate appearances as a rookie in 2019. He batted second in Pittsburgh's lineup most of last year and figures to hit near the top of the order once again, though manager Derek Shelton has yet to publicly discuss the team's lineup. Reynolds had his worst month last September, when he hit just .230 in 87 at-bats, but it's likely he simply wore down. His .387 BABIP in 2019 could be due for regression, but he's never finished with a BABIP lower than .362 in four professional seasons.

Reynolds is set to start in left field following the signing of center fielder Jarrod Dyson, DK Pittsburgh Sports reports.

Reynolds, a natural center fielder, started at all three outfield spots in 2019 but played mostly in left field (75 starts). He hit a combined .314/.377/.503 in 546 plate appearances as a rookie and will be counted upon to provide production in the middle of Pittsburgh's batting lineup. The switch-hitter has never batted under .300 in any of his four professional seasons. His 21 home runs split between Pittsburgh (16) and Triple-A Indianapolis (5) in 2019 represented a career best.

Reynolds left Sunday's game with an apparent leg injury after he was involved in a collision at home plate.

The outfielder slid feet-first into catcher Tony Wolters and showed no immediate signs of injury. He initially headed out into the field in his customary left field spot, but then walked back into the dugout before the start of the next inning. While he was limping ever so slightly, it didn't seem as if the injury was too serious. The team will likely update Reynolds's status after the game. Pittsburgh doesn't play again until Tuesday.
