Acquired by Mariners
The Mariners acquired Vargas and Seby Zavala from the Diamondbacks in exchange for Eugenio Suarez on Wednesday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Vargas posted a 5.79 ERA and 7:4 K:BB over 4.2 innings with Arizona and a 7.02 ERA and 36:32 K:BB across 42.1 frames at Triple-A Reno in 2023. While the control problems are worrisome, Vargas has a huge arm and could develop into a late-inning weapon if he can throw enough strikes.

Optioned to Triple-A
The Diamondbacks optioned Vargas to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Vargas was brought up from Triple-A after Tyler Gilbert was placed on the paternity list, and he'll now return to the minors due to Gilbert's return Wednesday. Vargas was sent to the minors in April after beginning the season with three earned runs across 4.2 frames, and he's recorded an 8.74 ERA and 2.61 WHIP across 22.2 Triple-A frames since then.

Returns to parent club
The Diamondbacks recalled Vargas from Triple-A Reno on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The hard-throwing right-hander will provide Arizona with a fresh arm in the bullpen for Sunday's series finale with the Pirates after Tyler Gilbert (personal) -- who covered three innings in relief in Saturday's 3-2 win -- was placed on the paternity list in a corresponding move. Vargas has previously made five appearances for Arizona this season, giving up three earned runs on five hits and four walks while striking out seven over 4.2 innings.

Vargas was optioned to Triple-A Reno by the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Vargas has loads of upside as a late-inning relief arm, but he's struggled this season with a 5.79 ERA and 7:4 K:BB over 4.2 innings. He'll try to get on track at Reno.

Makes first scoreless appearance
Vargas allowed two walks and hit a batter over a scoreless ninth inning in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Dodgers.

Vargas, who made his third appearance of the season, managed to escape with his first scoreless outing despite loading the bases with one out. All three of the hard-throwing right-hander's appearances have come in Diamondbacks' losses.

Wins final spot in bullpen
Vargas won the final spot in the Diamondbacks' bullpen, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Vargas put his stamp on the job with a sharp 2.61 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 10.1 innings this spring in the Cactus League. Acquired from the Guardians in November, the 23-year-old right-hander could quickly work his way up the patchwork bullpen depth chart in Arizona. He might even be a sleeper for saves.

Sent to Arizona
Vargas was acquired by the Diamondbacks from the Guardians on Tuesday in exchange for Ross Carver.
ANALYSIS
Vargas received his first call-up to the big leagues in mid-September, though he didn't make his debut while up with the Guardians. The 23-year-old will now head to Arizona, where he should have a clearer path to pitching in the majors.

Optioned to Triple-A
Vargas was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
He was recalled on Friday last week and didn't appear in a game. Vargas should serve as organizational bullpen depth in 2023.

Recalled Friday
Vargas was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Friday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Vargas spent plenty of time at Double-A Akron earlier in the year after returning to full health following Tommy John surgery that he underwent in April of 2021. However, he was promoted to the Triple-A club at the beginning of September and allowed a run on four hits and two walks while striking out 12 in six innings over four relief appearances. The right-hander will likely serve as a multi-inning option out of Cleveland's bullpen, and his first appearance with the Guardians will be his major-league debut.

Activated, sent down Monday
Vargas (elbow) was activated from the 60-day injured list and assigned to Double-A Akron on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Vargas has already made seven appearances at Akron while rehabbing in his recovery from April 2021 Tommy John surgery. The right-hander has posted a 5.23 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 8:5 K:BB in 10.1 innings, and he'll stay at the Double-A level as he continues to build back up. He primarily worked as a starter in rookie ball, but he's worked out the bullpen during his rehab.

Rehabbing at Double-A
Vargas (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Akron on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Vargas is ready to make his 2022 season debut after spending just under 14 months recovering from Tommy John surgery. The Guardians added Vargas to their 40-man roster during the offseason, but once he's activated from the 60-day injured list, he'll likely be optioned to Akron and continue to make regular starts for the affiliate.

Placed on 60-day injured list
Vargas (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list Monday.
ANALYSIS
The move doesn't affect Vargas' timeline, as he underwent Tommy John surgery at the start of last season and isn't expected to return until the middle of this year. It clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the Guardians to add new signing Luke Maile.

Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Vargas underwent Tommy John surgery Thursday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Vargas has some potential, but he wasn't going to help out Cleveland at the big-league level any time soon, as he's yet to advance to full-season ball. He'll now be out of game action until sometime in the middle of the 2022 season.
