Set to return to Detroit
The Tigers plan to exercise Kelly's $3.5 million team option for 2024, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After getting released by Arizona in mid-August, Kelly caught on with the Tigers shortly thereafter on a prorated one-year, $720,000 deal that included the club option for 2024. Over 19 games with the Tigers, Kelly hit just .173 and got on base at a .271 clip, but the organization was evidently satisfied enough with how the 29-year-old handled the pitching staff and acquitted himself defensively to justify bringing him back for 2024. Kelly will likely head into Opening Day as the Tigers' No. 2 catcher behind Jake Rogers.

Goes deep Friday
Kelly went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Friday's 8-2 loss to the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Kelly has seen somewhat limited playing time since signing with the Tigers on Aug. 19. He hasn't done much to earn more either, batting .190 (8-for-42) over 15 games with his new team, with his homer Friday being his first blast with the Tigers. He's at a .214/.270/.302 slash line with two long balls, 11 RBI, 11 runs scored and one stolen base over 48 contests between Detroit and Arizona this season.
Aug 19, 2023
Signs with Detroit
Kelly and the Tigers agreed on a major-league contract with a club option for 2024 on Saturday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Kelly was released by the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, but it didn't take long for him to find a new squad. The catcher has struggled to a .226 average with one homer, six RBI, six runs and a stolen base over 84 at-bats in 33 games with Arizona this season. Kelly will seemingly replace Eric Haase as Detroit's primary backup behind Jake Rogers moving forward after Haase was designated for assignment Saturday.
Aug 16, 2023
Cut by D-backs
The Diamondbacks released Kelly on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
After being designated for assignment Sunday, Kelly will now begin the search for a new organization. The 29-year-old backstop is slashing .226/.283/.298 through 92 plate appearances this season and could at least draw a minor-league contract from another team.
Aug 13, 2023
Designated for assignment
Kelly was designated for assignment Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Dating back to the start of last season, Kelly is slashing .214/.283/.327, and while he is generally regarded as a solid defender, the Diamondbacks decided Jose Herrera is the preferred backup option to Gabriel Moreno going forward. Given that Kelly is owed the remainder of a $4.3 million deal this season, he will likely pass through waivers and head to Triple-A Reno.
Jul 30, 2023
Not starting Sunday
Kelly is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old has worked as Arizona's primary backstop since Gabriel Moreno (shoulder) landed on the injured list, but Kelly has just a .174/.194/.232 slash line in 72 plate appearances this season. Jose Herrera will take over behind the plate for Sunday's series finale versus Seattle.
Jul 28, 2023
Not in lineup Friday
Kelly is not in the lineup Friday against the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Jose Herrera will start behind the plate and bat ninth. Kelly has slashed just .167/.188/.226 across 21 games (69 plate appearances) this season when healthy.
Jul 26, 2023
Resting Wednesday
Kelly is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Kelly will hit the bench for the matinee game after starting each of the last four contests while going 1-for-11 at the dish. Jose Herrera will check in behind the dish Wednesday, but Kelly looks set to work as the Diamondbacks' No. 1 backstop after Gabriel Moreno (shoulder) was recently placed on the 10-day injured list.
Jul 23, 2023
Steps in as No. 1 catcher
Kelly will start at catcher and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Reds.
ANALYSIS
With the Diamondbacks moving Gabriel Moreno (shoulder) to the 10-day injured list Sunday, Kelly looks like he'll be locked in as Arizona's clear No. 1 backstop for the time being. Kelly, who had been working in a timeshare with Moreno, is batting .175 with one home run in 60 plate appearances since returning from the 60-day injured list June 12. The 29-year-old is probably only worth a look in NL-only leagues or deeper mixed leagues that start two catchers.
Jul 19, 2023
Back on bench Wednesday
Kelly is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Kelly had started at catcher in each of Arizona's last three games while going 3-for-9 with a run scored. The Diamondbacks don't appear ready to pull the plug on Gabriel Moreno, however, so despite Kelly's recent uptick in starts, he still may be part of a timeshare behind the plate.
Jul 2, 2023
Hits first homer of season
Kelly went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Kelly has provided four of his five RBI on the season over his last three games. The catcher started slowly but has hit safely in five of his last six contests. He's batting .212 with a homer, a double and two runs scored through 36 plate appearances. Gabriel Moreno continues to hold a slight edge for playing time, but Kelly could force an even split if he can keep his bat warm.
Jun 23, 2023
Two more hits Thursday
Kelly went 2-for-4 in Thursday's 5-3 win over Washington.
ANALYSIS
After going hitless in his first 14 at-bats off the injured list, Kelly has four hits in the subsequent seven at-bats. He had been on the 60-day IL to start the season, and initial futility is the norm for players coming back from such a long stretch of not seeing MLB pitching.
Jun 21, 2023
Rejoins starting lineup
Kelly went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Tuesday's 7-5 loss to Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
Kelly got the start at catcher after Gabriel Moreno started four of the previous five games. The two hits were Kelly's first in five games since being activated off the 60-day injured list, where he began the season with a forearm injury. He was 0-for-14 with a walk prior to his second-inning double Tuesday.
Jun 18, 2023
Out Sunday vs. Guardians
Kelly is not in the starting lineup versus the Guardians on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Kelly will take a seat after going 0-for-3 Saturday against Cleveland, and he's still searching for his first hit of the 2023 season. Gabriel Moreno gets the start behind the plate while Kelly rests.
Jun 16, 2023
Gets rest day vs. Guardians
Kelly is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game versus Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Kelly is still looking for his first hit of the 2023 season after going 0-for-11 versus the Phillies in the three-game series earlier this week. Gabriel Moreno will be the starting backstop and hit seventh versus Touki Toussaint and the Guardians on Friday.
Jun 15, 2023
Gets breather Thursday
Kelly is not in the lineup Thursday against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Kelly will grab some rest after logging three straight starts following his Monday return from the 60-day injured list. Gabriel Moreno is catching for the Diamondbacks on Thursday and hitting eighth.
Jun 14, 2023
Draws third straight start
Kelly will start at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Kelly has now started in three straight games since returning from the 60-day injured list Monday for his 2023 debut with the Diamondbacks and looks as though he'll operate as Arizona's top catcher ahead of Gabriel Moreno. However, given that Kelly is off to an 0-for-7 start at the plate since being activated, he may have to pick up the pace with the bat to ensure he sticks ahead of Moreno on the depth chart for the balance of the season.
Jun 14, 2023
Hitless in loss
Kelly started at catcher and went 0-for-4 with an RBI in Tuesday's 15-3 loss to the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Kelly made a second consecutive start behind the dish after being activated off the 60-day injured list Monday. He's 0-for-7 thus far, but it's normal for a hitter's timing to be off after not seeing MLB pitching for such a long time. What's less normal is the staff ERA. Throwing out Tuesday's final inning that featured infielder Josh Rojas pitching, Kelly's catcher ERA is 9.00 (17 earned runs, 17 innings).
Jun 12, 2023
Starting Monday
Kelly is starting at catcher and batting seventh Monday versus the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Kelly was activated from the 60-day injured list and will make his return to the lineup Monday. He'll replace Gabriel Moreno behind the plate, who he'll likely have to compete with for playing time moving forward.
Jun 12, 2023
Reinstated from 60-day IL
Kelly (forearm) was activated from the 60-day injured list Monday, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports.
ANALYSIS
Kelly will make his return to the Diamondbacks' roster after he was placed on the injured list in late March with a fractured right forearm. The 28-year-old will be returning to a first place Arizona squad after he produced a .345 average with three doubles, four RBI and five runs scored over 29 at-bats over his eight-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno. Kelly will have to compete with Gabriel Moreno for reps at catcher moving forward, though Kelly could be eased back into fielding duties and operate more frequently as a designated hitter for the time being. He is coming off of a down year in 2022 where he posted a .211/.282/.334 slash line, all of which were his lowest marks over his three seasons with Arizona.
Jun 7, 2023
Gets timing down
Kelly (forearm) went 1-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored for Triple-A Reno on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
This was the fifth game of a rehab assignment for Kelly, who appears to be getting his timing down at the plate. He want 0-for-5 in the first two games but is 5-for-12 in the three games since. He started at catcher Tuesday and is scheduled to start behind the plate Wednesday, after which the team will assess whether to have him play a third consecutive game Thursday, per Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said that assessment will not include the possibility of Kelly being reinstated, saying the focus is on building stamina and accumulating reps.
Jun 3, 2023
Begins rehab assignment
Kelly (forearm) started at catcher and went 0-for-3 with a walk for Triple-A Reno on Friday.
ANALYSIS
This was Kelly's second rehab start, both coming at catcher. He was limited to three innings Thursday due to rainy weather and followed up with seven innings Friday. Kelly is 0-for-5 in his two starts.
May 29, 2023
Closing in on rehab assignment
Kelly (forearm) is expected to report to a minor-league affiliate Thursday to begin a rehab assignment, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports.
ANALYSIS
Kelly was cleared to begin participating in simulated games at extended spring training last week, but he now appears set to get some at-bats in an uncontrolled setting. The veteran catcher has been sidelined since fracturing his right forearm in a March 20 Cactus League game and will likely need an extended rehab assignment to regain his timing at the plate and to show the Diamondbacks that he isn't hampered when it comes to throwing out would-be base stealers. Once activated, Kelly will likely settle in as the top backup to Gabriel Moreno, who has fared well during his first season with the Diamondbacks.
May 27, 2023
Serves as DH in XST
Kelly (forearm) served as the designated hitter in an extended spring training game Friday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Kelly is scheduled to DH again Saturday, as he works his way back to full-game action. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said it would be reasonable to view Kelly like it's the start of spring training games for the catcher.
May 23, 2023
Live at-bats coming
Kelly (forearm) will continue to take batting practice and is expected to take live at-bats this week.
ANALYSIS
Kelly was hit by a pitch on his right forearm during a Cactus League game and has been healing since. The recovery time for such injuries is generally in the eight-to-10 weeks range, making a June return possible.
May 20, 2023
Moved to 60-day injured list
Kelly was transferred from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list by the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
It clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Austin Adams after Adams had his contract selected from Reno on Saturday. Kelly is out of action with a right forearm fracture, and he isn't expected to be able to return until the late summer months.
Apr 30, 2023
Not cleared for swinging
Kelly (forearm) will under another round of X-rays on Monday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Kelly was seen last week by a team doctor, who did not authorized the injured catcher to starting swinging a bat. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Kelly has been performing other baseball-related activities and conditioning,
Mar 31, 2023
Moves to injured list
Kelly (forearm) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old suffered a fractured right forearm late in spring training from a hit-by-pitch, so it's no surprise he's opening the campaign on the injured list. It's unclear how long Kelly is expected to be sidelined, though it's worth noting the Diamondbacks didn't immediately place him on the 60-day IL, suggesting an earlier return could be possible. Gabriel Moreno and Jose Herrera are beginning 2023 as Arizona's backstops, with Moreno starting Opening Day and likely to see the bulk of the starts.
Mar 21, 2023
Diagnosed with fractured forearm
Kelly was diagnosed Tuesday with a fracture in his right forearm, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Kelly suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch in Monday's Cactus League game against the White Sox. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo did not offer an estimated recovery timetable, but this could very well lead to a multi-month absence for the 28-year-old catcher. He had been putting together a nice spring offensively, boasting a .320/.414/.520 slash line through 29 plate appearances in exhibition play. Offseason acquisition Gabriel Moreno would seem to be in line for something close to everyday playing time out of the gate in Arizona. Jose Herrera could back him up.
Mar 20, 2023
Leaves with right forearm injury
Kelly left Monday's Cactus League game against the White Sox after being hit in the right forearm area, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
There's no information right now, but Kelly told Mackie that his level of concern is "not minimal." It's the second catcher injury in a few days after Gabriel Moreno left a Cactus League contest with a hit-by-pitch over the weekend, but this one sounds more serious. There should be an update on Kelly's status before Tuesday.
Mar 20, 2023
Leaves after HBP
Kelly left Monday's Cactus League game against the White Sox after being hit by a pitch, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Kelly appeared to be hit in the hand area, but nothing has been disclosed at this time. The backstop leaves just a couple days after Gabriel Moreno left for the Diamondbacks after being hit in the knuckles by a pitch. There should be an update on Kelly's status shortly.
Jan 13, 2023
Avoids arbitration with D-backs
Kelly signed a one-year, $4.275 million contract with the Diamondbacks on Friday to avoid arbitration, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Kelly's numbers took a substantial dip between 2021 and 2022, as the 28-year-old backstop slashed just .211/.282/.334 through 354 plate appearances last season. Kelly's decline, combined with the acquisition of Gabriel Moreno from Toronto, will likely limit the number of chances he gets at the plate in 2023.
Oct 3, 2022

ANALYSIS
Kelly went 1-for-4 with a double, a run and a walk during Sunday's series finale in San Francisco, and he'll head to the bench for the second time in the last three games. Cooper Hummel is starting behind the dish and batting eighth.

Sep 16, 2022
Halts homer drought
Kelly went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Thursday's 4-0 win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Kelly provided space for the Diamondbacks, increasing the lead to 3-0 with his seventh-inning solo shot. It was the seventh of the season for Kelly and snapped a 34-game run without homering. After a hot stretch during the middle of the summer, Kelly has cooled off, batting .186 since Aug. 8.
Sep 14, 2022

Aug 31, 2022
Not starting Wednesday
Kelly isn't in the lineup Wednesday against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Kelly is resting after he went 4-for-9 with a double, four RBI, two runs, a walk and three strikeouts over the last two games. Cooper Hummel is starting behind the plate and batting sixth.
Aug 30, 2022
Drives in four in win
Kelly went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double and four RBI in Monday's 13-7 win over the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Kelly had a bases-clearing double in the fourth inning and run-producing single an inning later, knocking in four of the 12 runs the Diamondbacks scored in the frames. He's been fighting it over last few weeks, batting just .193 over 19 games since Aug. 8, but the catcher's provided a few key hits during that stretch and recorded 12 RBI.
Aug 28, 2022
Sits after big game
Kelly is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Kelly will get some routine maintenance after he started in each of the Diamondbacks' last 11 games, including 10 starts behind the plate. Cooper Hummel will check in behind the plate to replace Kelly, who ended a four-game hitless stretch by going 1-for-2 with three walks, three RBI and a run in Saturday's 10-5 win.
Aug 28, 2022
Three RBI in win
Kelly went 1-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 10-5 win over the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Kelly's first RBI came in the second inning when he walked with the bases loaded. He came around to score later on another bases loaded walk. Kelly also knocked in Daulton Varsho and Christian Walker on a ninth-inning single. The catcher had gone hitless in his last 13 at-bats, dropping his batting average to .214, but it now sits at .216 after Saturday's game.
Aug 21, 2022
Does his part in loss
Kelly went 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, three RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 16-7 loss to St. Louis.
ANALYSIS
Kelly knocked in three runs over the first three innings and helped give Arizona a pair of two-run leads, but Madison Bumgarner couldn't hold them. He had been Arizona's hottest hitter for a stretch from late June to early August (.354 average, 1.077 OPS over 25 games), but the bat's gone cold since. He entered Saturday batting just .171 (.494 OPS) over 11 contests.
Aug 7, 2022
Receives maintenance day
Kelly is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS

Jul 26, 2022
Keeps hitting post-break
Kelly went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in Monday's 7-0 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The All-Star break hasn't slowed Kelly, who has hit safely in all four games since the season resumed and has a 13-game hitting streak going back to July 4. The catcher is slashing .422/.458/.756 with nine extra-base hits, nine RBI and 11 runs scored during the streak.
Jul 24, 2022
Out of Sunday's lineup
Kelly is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Kelly started the first two games out of the All-Star break and went 4-for-7 with a double, a home run, two walks, two RBI and three runs. Jose Herrera will take over behind the plate in Sunday's series finale.
Jul 24, 2022
Extends hit streak
Kelly went 1-for-3 with a walk, a solo home run and a second run scored in Saturday's 7-2 win over Washington.
ANALYSIS
The version of Kelly that batted .129 through the first three months of the season has been replaced by a more competent hitter. The catcher extended a hit streak to 12 games with a second-inning home run, his fifth of the season and all hit in the last 17 contests. Kelly's slashing .415/.455/.732 with seven extra-base hits, seven RBI and nine runs scored during his streak.
Jul 23, 2022
Gets aboard four times
Kelly went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, an RBI and a run scored in Friday's 10-1 win over the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Kelly has six multi-hit games this year, and four of them have come since July 7. For the month, he's now hitting a sizzling .378 (17-for-45) with seven extra-base hits, seven RBI and eight runs scored in 14 games. The catcher's slash line is at a season-high .210/.255/.348 with four home runs, 15 RBI, 16 runs scored and seven doubles in 45 contests overall.
Jul 17, 2022
Sitting out Sunday
Kelly is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Kelly will receive some routine maintenance for the series finale after he went 3-for-9 with a home run and a double while catching in both of the Diamondbacks' previous two contests. Jose Herrera will relieve Kelly behind the plate Sunday.
Jul 17, 2022
Knocks fourth homer
Kelly went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and a double in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Kelly gave the Diamondbacks a 3-0 lead with his fifth-inning blast off Padres starter Sean Manaea. After a lack of power early in the year, Kelly has hit all four of his homers in his last 14 contests. He's hit safely in 12 of those games, going 15-for-45 (.333) in that span. The catcher is up to a .189/.232/.326 slash line with 14 RBI, 14 runs scored and six doubles in 142 plate appearances.
Jul 13, 2022
Breather Wednesday
Kelly is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's series finale against the Giants.

Jul 10, 2022
Rests Sunday
Kelly is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Kelly will take a seat for the day game after a night game while Jose Herrera gets a turn behind the dish. Expect Kelly to rejoin the lineup for Monday's series opener in San Francisco.
Jul 10, 2022
Bat coming alive
Kelly went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored in Saturday's 9-2 win over Colorado.
ANALYSIS
Perhaps as a reward for a stretch in which he had hits in four straight games, Kelly was moved to the top of the order Saturday and extended the streak to five games with a leadoff double. He came around to score the first of three runs Arizona plated during the opening frame. The catcher has hit safely in eight of the last nine contests, going 10-for-30 (.333) with three doubles, three home runs, eight RBI and eight runs scored during that stretch. This must be a great relief for Kelly, who suffered through a prolonged slump to start the season and was batting .098 as recently as June 12. It's unclear if he'll be taking over the leadoff spot permanently against left-handers.
Jul 8, 2022
On bench Friday
Kelly isn't starting Friday's game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Kelly went 4-for-10 with a homer, a double, three runs and three RBI over his last three games but will take a seat for the third time in the last six matchups. Jose Herrera is starting behind the dish and batting ninth.
Jul 8, 2022
Plates all three Arizona runs
Kelly went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Thursday's loss to the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Kelly twice tied the score in the game, first with a two-run blast in the second inning and later with a run-scoring single in the fourth. This was just his third multi-hit contest over 37 games this season, and the three RBI were the most he has tallied in a single contest on the campaign. Kelly has had a miserable offensive season with a .155/.202/.273 slash line, but he's started to play better of late with at least one hit in six of his past seven games.
Jul 6, 2022
Resting Wednesday
Kelly is not in the starting lineup Wednesday against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Kelly will get a breather after he went 2-for-6 with a double and two runs scored in the first two contests of the series. Jose Herrera is starting at catcher and will bat ninth Wednesday.
Jul 3, 2022
Sits for series finale
Kelly is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
After going 1-for-7 with a solo home run while starting behind the plate in both of the first two games in Colorado, Kelly will hit the bench for the series finale. Jose Herrera will catch for starting pitcher Zac Gallen on Sunday.
Jul 1, 2022
Pops second homer
Kelly went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 9-3 win over the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Kelly's two homers this year have come in his last three games. He's shown modest improvement lately, going 7-for-36 (.194) in his last 10 contests compared to a season batting average of .134 in 32 games. The catcher has added nine RBI, nine runs scored and three doubles, and it appears he'll continue to share time with Jose Herrera behind the dish. The two backstops have split time fairly evenly of late with neither of them hitting consistently enough to command a larger role.
Jun 29, 2022
Takes seat Wednesday
Kelly isn't in the lineup Wednesday against San Diego.
ANALYSIS
Kelly is getting a day off after he went 2-for-6 with a homer, a double, four RBI, three runs and a walk over the last two games. Jose Herrera is starting at catcher and batting ninth.
Jun 26, 2022
Knocks first homer
Kelly went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's 11-7 win over the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Kelly got the Diamondbacks on the board with his third-inning homer, which was his first in 30 contests this season. He added a game-tying sacrifice fly in the fifth. On top of his first long ball, this was the first time all year the catcher had multiple RBI or runs scored in a game. He's still hitting a paltry .122/.173/.178 with six RBI, seven runs scored and two doubles through 98 plate appearances. Kelly should continue to see about half of the playing time behind the dish in a timeshare with Jose Herrera while Daulton Varsho continues to play in the outfield regularly.
Jun 25, 2022
Riding pine Saturday
Kelly isn't starting Saturday's game against the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Kelly went 0-for-4 with a strikeout Friday and will be out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games. Jose Herrera is starting behind the plate and batting ninth.

ANALYSIS
Kelly sat out Saturday after being scratched from Friday's lineup with the injury, and he'll now be sidelined for at least the next week. Prospect Alek Thomas was promoted in a corresponding move and should take over the starting job in center field, with Daulton Varsho likely to operate as Arizona's primary catcher. Kelly has a .105/.150/.123 slash line through 60 plate appearances this season, and he could have a reduced role once healthy depending how Thomas produces during his first run in the majors.

Moves up against lefty
Kelly went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Friday's 3-0 loss to the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Kelly batted third against left-handed starter Sean Manaea on Friday after slotting in at the six-hole against a righty the previous night. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo likes to play with the order based on the handedness of the opposing starter, so it would appear the righty-hitting Kelly will slot higher against southpaws. Thus far, it doesn't matter which hand the starter throws with, Arizona's offense has fizzled. Kelly is 0-for-7 through two games, and the lineup has not hit safely against two San Diego starters over 13 innings while going 5-for-55 overall.

He continues to be the Diamondbacks' primary catcher, playing four or five games per week, but the team could tilt the balance over the final month and give prospect Daulton Varsho more time behind the dish. ANALYSIS
The catcher receives the day off after a productive Tuesday where he went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Kelly has been outstanding at the plate all season, hitting .333 with six homers and making a case for himself as one of baseball's premier offensive catchers. Stephen Vogt gets the start behind the dish Wednesday.

Bats leadoff
Kelly batted leadoff and went 2-for-4 with a walk in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Kelly was atop the batting order for the second time this season, as manager Torey Lovullo rotates bodies at the leadoff spot. In addition to Kelly, Pavin Smith, Tim Locastro and Josh Rojas have filled the role. With news that Ketel Marte (hamstring) is close to beginning a rehab assignment, Lovullo may not have to mix-and-match leadoff batters for too much longer.

Kelly went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored in a victory over the Padres on Tuesday.

Apr 24, 2021
Clubs fifth homer
Kelly went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's 5-4 loss to Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
The catcher remains one of the few consistent offensive forces in the Arizona lineup to begin the season. Kelly has five homers on the year, all of which have come in his last eight games, and the power surge has boosted his slash line to .341/.517/.756 through 58 plate appearances.
Apr 23, 2021
Homers in win
Kelly went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run and a walk in Thursday's 14-11, extra-innings win over Cincinnati.
ANALYSIS
The catcher has been an offensive force thus far in 2021, hitting .351 in 37 at-bats with four homers and 10 RBI. He's also drawn 13 walks and struck out only 10 times. Kelly posted unremarkable numbers in 2020, but has been a tough out in the middle of Arizona's lineup this season and one of the top hitters at his position.
Apr 21, 2021
Out of Wednesday's lineup
Kelly is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Reds.
ANALYSIS
He is hitting .375 with a .543 OBP, three home runs and a 10:11 K:BB in 32 at-bats this season. Stephen Vogt will start at catcher and hit sixth.

ANALYSIS
Kelly's fourth-inning blast was his third in the last four games and gives him five RBI during that stretch. The catcher has reached base safely all but one of his 11 appearances and is slashing .400/.537/.767. This was Kelly's second start behind the plate with Madison Bumgarner on the hill, and it was by far the left-hander's best.

Apr 16, 2021
Homers in back-to-back games
Kelly went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a walk and an additional run scored in the 11-6 win over the Nationals on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Not only has Kelly homered in back-to-back games, he has at least one hit in all but one of his nine games this season. The catcher is batting .417 with two home runs, five RBI and three runs scored. That is good production at a position that often lacks consistent offense. Kelly could see more time behind home plate if he continues to get on base.
Apr 14, 2021
Crushes first homer
Kelly went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a walk during Tuesday's 7-5 loss versus Oakland.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old put the Diamondbacks on the board with his 413-foot shot to left field during the second inning, but they were unable to hold onto the lead. Kelly is off to a strong start in 2021 with a .429/.519/.667 slash line through eight games.

Apr 3, 2021
Makes debut
Kelly started Friday and went 2-for-3 in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Kelly didn't start Opening Day on Thursday when Stephen Vogt was behind the dish for Madison Bumgarner. Kelly is viewed as the primary catcher and should get more at-bats; however, manager Torey Lovullo used Vogt as a pinch hitter for Kelly against a right-handed reliever in the eighth inning. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo talked about an evolution in his managerial style with Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. The manager said he'll be more open to pinch-hitting for regulars and identifying the best possible matchup against an opposing starter or reliever.
Apr 1, 2021
Not starting Thursday
Kelly isn't starting Thursday's game against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Kelly will take a seat for Opening Day while Stephen Vogt starts behind the dish. Vogt caught Madison Bumgarner this spring and could see an uptick in playing time when the left-hander is on the mound, although it hasn't been stated that Bumgarner will use a personal catcher in 2021.
Mar 9, 2021
Goes yard Tuesday
Kelly went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's game against Colorado.
ANALYSIS
Kelly launched his first home run of Cactus League play and is 4-for-11 with a double, a home run, one RBI and two runs scored over five spring games. He's not in danger of losing the starting job, but Kelly is coming off a season in which he dropped 177 points off his OPS.

Sep 19, 2020
Not in Saturday's lineup

Sep 16, 2020
Sitting Wednesday
Kelly is not starting Wednesday's game against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Kelly has been the Diamondbacks' primary catcher this season, though he doesn't have a particularly large role, starting 27 of the team's first 50 games. Stephen Vogt gets the nod behind the plate for this one.
Sep 16, 2020
Collect three hits in win
Kelly went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, two doubles and an additional run scored in a victory over the Angels on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Kelly launched a homer to left field in the second inning , the third long ball of five hit by Arizona in the contest. He later came around to score another run after slugging a leadoff double in the fourth frame. The three-hit game was only the second of the season for the backstop, who is batting a disappointing .206/.252/.371 on the campaign.
Sep 13, 2020
Receives breather
Kelly is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Kelly had started each of the past four games (three times at catcher, once as a designated hitter), so he'll be getting some routine maintenance in the series finale. Daulton Varsho substitutes in for Kelly behind the dish.
Sep 11, 2020
Goes deep in win
Kelly went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run during Thursday's victory over the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Kelly did his part in a sixth-inning rally to help the Diamondbacks take control of the game for good by mashing a two-run homer against reliever Tony Gonsolin. It was long ball number three of the season for Kelly, who is averaging just 195/.239/.322.
Sep 8, 2020
Not starting Tuesday
Kelly is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS

Sep 2, 2020
Clubs second homer
Kelly went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 6-3 loss to the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Kelly's third-inning long ball was the only run Arizona could muster off Dodgers starter Julio Urias. It was Kelly's second homer of the year, to go with eight RBI, four runs scored and a .194 batting average through 67 plate appearances. Expect the 26-year-old Kelly to continue splitting time with Stephen Vogt behind the dish.

Sitting Tuesday
Kelly is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against Oakland, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Aug 16, 2020
Out of Sunday's lineup
Kelly is not in Sunday's lineup against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
His playing time has been somewhat inconsistent, but he is 4-for-8 with a home run and three RBI over his last two games. Stephen Vogt will start behind the dish and bat seventh.
Aug 16, 2020
Key to Saturday's win
Kelly went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 7-6 win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
As important as Kelly's bat was to the win, it was a stellar play on defense that preserved the win for the Diamondbacks. The catcher positioned his foot to block the hand of Jorge Mateo and then made a deft tag on the final play of the game. Manager Torey Lovullo had talked about splitting the catching duties more evenly between Kelly and Stephen Vogt, which still may happen, but it was nice to see Kelly's bat break out of its early-season slumber. He entered the contest with a .167/.268/.278 slash line. Perhaps the home run Kelly hit Tuesday, his previous start, ignited the cold stick in his hands.
Aug 15, 2020
Losing playing time
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Kelly and backup Stephen Vogt will share the catching duties evenly going forward, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Kelly's offensive slump drags on into the second quarter of the 60-game season, which resulted in Vogt starting five of the last seven games, including Friday night. "It's going to probably flatten out and be 50/50," Lovullo said. Kelly, who snapped a hitless streak of 15 at-bats in his last start, is slashing .167/.268/.278 over 13 games (41 plate appearances).
Aug 14, 2020
On bench Friday
Kelly is not in the lineup Friday against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Kelly finds himself on the bench for the fifth time in the past seven games as he is 6-for-36 in 13 games this season. Stephen Vogt receives another start behind the plate for Arizona.
Aug 12, 2020
Sitting out again
Kelly is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
On the bench for the fourth time in six games, Kelly seems to have settled into a timeshare at catcher with Stephen Vogt, who gets the nod behind the dish in the series finale. Both backstops are hitting below the Mendoza Line for the season, so expect the distribution of starts between the two to be fairly even until one player clearly separates himself from the other.
Aug 12, 2020
Lifts first homer
Kelly went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 8-7 loss to the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Kelly went deep off Rockies starter Kyle Freeland in the seventh inning. The homer was Kelly's first of the year, and also accounted for his first run scored. He's added four RBI and a .167 batting average in 36 at-bats this year.

Heads to bench
Kelly is not starting Monday against Colorado.
ANALYSIS

Aug 9, 2020
Returns to lineup
Kelly went 0-for-3 with a walk in Sunday's 9-5 loss to San Diego.
ANALYSIS
Kelly, stuck in an early slump, returned to the lineup Sunday after he was given two games off to clear his head, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. Arizona's starting catcher is hitless over the previous 12 at-bats. Kelly is 5-for-29 (.172) to start the season.
Aug 8, 2020
Remains on bench
Kelly sits for the second straight game Saturday against San Diego, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Kelly started eight of Arizona's first 11 games but has now sat for three of the last four. His .172/.273/.207 slash line through his first 33 plate appearances doesn't exactly make a great case for any kind of heavy workload, though that sample is of course quite small. Stephen Vogt will catch Saturday.
Aug 7, 2020
Out of Friday's lineup
Kelly is not in the lineup Friday against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Kelly started four of the last five games but will take a seat after going 1-for-11 during that stretch. Stephen Vogt will bat seventh and catch for Luke Weaver on Friday.
Aug 5, 2020
Out of lineup Wednesday

Not in lineup
Kelly is not starting Friday's game against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Kelly five of the Diamondbacks' first seven games, recording just three hits. Stephen Vogt takes over behind the plate Friday.
Jul 31, 2020
Raps first extra-base hit
Kelly went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
After going hitless over his first 10 at-bats, Kelly produced three hits, including his first extra-base hit, over the last six plate appearances. While many on the Diamondbacks' roster are slumping to start the season, which could prompt lineup changes, Kelly could have a longer leash than most. That means the news of Arizona promoting catching prospect Daulton Varsho, who has hit proficiently in the minors, may not impact Kelly's playing time. Varsho's promotion, however, prompts speculation as to where he will get at-bats. In addition to catcher, Varsho can play the outfield and serve as a designated hitter.
Jul 25, 2020
Bumgarner's batterymate
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo indicated Kelly will be Madison Bumgarner's regular catcher. Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Kelly will be the Diamondbacks' regular catcher during the 60-game season, so he may turn out to be a few of the staff's regualr backstops. "But there are certain familiarities that pitchers and catchers develop with one another," Lovullo said. "Obviously we're going to count on Carson in a very heavy manner. If it goes well, I'm going to continue to stay with it." Kelly went hitless in three at-bats in Friday's season-opening loss to the Padres.
Mar 7, 2020
Doubles in spring win
Kelly went 1-for-2 with a walk, a double, an RBI and two runs scored in Friday's spring game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Kelly is 3-for-11 with a double, four runs and an RBI through five spring appearances. The 25-year-old backstop emerged as the Diamondbacks' primary catcher in 2019 after beginning the season as one of three in a rotation. Kelly swatted 18 home runs in 365 plate appearances while proving he can control the game from behind the plate. He returns as the top catcher and should see an increase in at-bats in 2020.
