Homers twice in finale
Schmitt went 2-for-3 with a pair of solo home runs in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt was responsible for all of San Francisco's offense in the loss. He got the Giants on the board with a homer off Ryan Pepiot in the sixth inning, just his second in his last 86 games, before adding another longball in the fifth. After going 26-for-76 (.342) with a .851 OPS in his first 20 major-league games, Schmidt struggled to a .147 average (26-for-177) in his final 70 contests. The 24-year-old infielder will wrap up his rookie campaign with a .206/.255/.324 slash line, five homers, 30 RBI and two stolen bases across 277 plate appearances.

Recalled from Triple-A
The Giants recalled Schmitt from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
J.D. Davis (shoulder) will be unavailable for the final weekend of the regular season, so Schmitt gets the call as an option at third base. The 24-year-old has batted just .202/.254/.300 with three homers and two steals through his first 88 major-league games this season.

Sent back to minors
Schmitt was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt loses his roster spot with Michael Conforto (hamstring) returning from the injured list. The rookie infielder has not been able to get things going offensively to this point at the big-league level, putting up just a .553 OPS in 88 contests.

Heads to bench Sunday
Schmitt is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt had started at third base or shortstop in each of the past eight games, going 6-for-24 with a home run, three doubles and two walks. Though he's swung the bat well of late, Schmitt is likely to fade into more of a part-time role in the San Francisco infield with Brandon Crawford recently returning from the injured list and with J.D. Davis returning to the lineup Saturday after missing one game with a sore hand.

Ends homer drought
Schmitt went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 8-5 win over Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt homered twice over his first three major-league games, but that was it for his power until Sunday. The homer drought lasted 71 contests. The infielder is at a .199/.252/.292 slash line with 26 RBI, 23 runs scored, two stolen bases and 11 doubles through 236 plate appearances this season. Schmitt appears to have a lock on a short-side platoon role at third base while providing cover around the infield as a strong defender, but he hasn't hit well enough (2-for-19 in August) to justify a full-time role for a team in the wild-card chase.

Returns to bench role
Schmitt is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt started at three different infield positions in each of the last three games, going hitless across eight at-bats. Since June 19, Schmitt has mustered a .086/.202/.111 slash line over a stretch of 37 games. Though he's been valued for his defensive work, Schmitt's lack of production at the plate over a prolonged stretch looks as though it'll force him into a utility role even while the Giants are without Brandon Crawford (forearm). The Giants signed veteran Paul DeJong on Wednesday, and he's expected to take over as the team's everyday shortstop sans Crawford.

Back with SF
The Giants recalled Schmitt from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt will offer the Giants extra depth in the infield while Ross Stripling (back) and Ryan Walker (paternity) are both out. The 24-year-old was optioned to Triple-A on Aug. 6 and has since slashed .311/.354/.533 with six RBI over 48 plate appearances.
Aug 6, 2023
Optioned to minors
Schmitt was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt has been up with the big club since early May and has at times served as San Francisco's primary shortstop, but he'll head back to the minors with a .548 OPS in 218 plate appearances. Brandon Crawford has struggled in his own right this year with a .211/.281/.349 slash line, so Schmitt could receive another look in the majors before the end of the campaign.
Jul 23, 2023
Serving as primary shortstop
Schmitt will start at shortstop and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt will stick in the lineup for a seventh consecutive game and looks poised to serve as the Giants' primary shortstop against both right- and left-handed pitching while Brandon Crawford (knee) is on the shelf. Since opening his big-league career with 26 hits in his first 20 games, Schmitt is batting an abysmal .124 with no home runs, eight runs and seven RBI over his subsequent 39 contests.
Jul 15, 2023
Sitting Saturday
Schmitt isn't starting Saturday against the Pirates, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt will get a breather Saturday after going 1-for-4 with a double during Friday's contest. Brett Wisely will take over at the keystone and bat ninth while Schmitt sits.
Jul 8, 2023
Not starting Saturday
Schmitt isn't in the Giants' lineup Saturday against the Rockies, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt has just one hit in 15 tries since the beginning of July, so he'll take a day off Saturday to regroup. While Schmitt sits, Brett Wisely will start at second base and bat ninth while Brandon Crawford covers short.
Jun 24, 2023
Sitting Saturday
Schmitt isn't in the Giants' lineup Saturday against the Diamondbacks, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt is 1-for-12 across his last six games, though he still managed to reach base seven times in that span. He'll get a day off Saturday as Brandon Crawford starts at shortstop for the sixth time in seven games.

Walks twice in return
Schmitt (arm) went 0-for-1 with two walks in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt was out of the starting lineup for a couple of games after he was hit by a pitch Sunday. He's drawn walks in four of his last six plate appearances, though he's gone just 3-for-22 since June 12. Prior to Monday, Schmitt had walked just one time in his first 35 big-league games. Schmitt will likely continue competing for playing time on the left side of the infield, primarily challenging J.D. Davis and Brandon Crawford for their spots in the lineup. Schmitt owns a .262/.302/.377 slash line with two home runs, 21 RBI, 16 runs scored and two stolen bases through 139 plate appearances.
Jun 21, 2023
Back in lineup
Schmitt (arm) is starting at second base Wednesday against the Padres, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt was held out of the Giants' lineup for the past two games after getting hit in the arm by a pitch Sunday, but he was able to hit in both games off the bench. He now rejoins the lineup and will bat ninth Wednesday.
Jun 20, 2023
Remains out Tuesday
Schmitt (arm) will sit Tuesday versus the Padres, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt will miss a second consecutive contest after being hit in the arm by a pitch Sunday versus the Dodgers, but considering he was able to log two plate appearances, including a walk, in Monday's extra-inning win, the 24-year-old seems to be on the cusp of a return. Brandon Crawford will draw another start at shortstop and bat seventh against San Diego.
Jun 19, 2023
Unavailable Monday
Schmitt (arm) is not in the starting lineup Monday versus the Padres, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt exited Sunday's victory over the Dodgers early after he was hit by a pitch and he will now be forced to miss at least one contest. The team got good news Sunday night when the 24-year-old's X-rays didn't reveal any structural damages, so he is considered day-to-day for the time being. Brandon Crawford will draw the start at shortstop and bat seventh in the series opener with San Diego on Monday.
Jun 18, 2023
X-rays negative
Schmitt (arm) underwent X-rays that came back negative after exiting Sunday's game against the Dodgers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt was removed from Sunday's matchup shortly after being hit by a pitch on his right arm, but he doesn't appear to be dealing with any structural damage. He should tentatively be considered day-to-day ahead of Monday's series opener against the Padres.
Jun 18, 2023
Exits after HBP
Schmitt was removed from Sunday's game against the Dodgers in the bottom of the eighth inning due to an apparent right arm injury, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt was hit by a pitch on his right arm in the top of the eighth and initially stayed in the game to run the bases, but he was replaced defensively in the bottom half of the frame. Prior to his departure, he went 1-for-3 with two strikeouts. It's unclear whether he'll be available for Monday's series opener against the Padres.
Jun 16, 2023
Not starting Friday
Schmitt is not in the starting lineup versus the Dodgers on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt will take a seat after going just 1-for-11 over the series against the Cardinals. The rookie infielder will open the game on the bench with Brandon Crawford starting at shortstop and Wilmer Flores lined up at third base.
Jun 13, 2023
Not in lineup Tuesday
Schmitt is not in the lineup Tuesday versus the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt enjoyed a productive May, but he is batting just .138/.167/.241 in 30 plate appearances since the calendar flipped to June. Brandon Crawford will start at shortstop and bat ninth for the Giants on Tuesday in St. Louis.
Jun 10, 2023
Heads to bench
Schmitt will sit Saturday against the Cubs, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt had been set for an off day Friday but wound up needed at third base after J.D. Davis was scratched with a minor hip issue. Davis is back in the lineup Saturday, so Schmitt will get his day off one day later than originally planned. After starting his MLB career with 11 hits in his first five games, the rookie owns an .492 OPS in his last 23 contests.
Jun 9, 2023
Starting in place of Davis
Schmitt is hitting eighth and playing third base versus the Cubs on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt was originally out of the lineup for the series opener against the Cubs, but he's hitting eighth and playing third base after J.D. Davis was scratched from the lineup due to right hip tightness.
Jun 9, 2023
Sitting Friday
Schmitt isn't starting Friday against the Cubs, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt is just 1-for-14 with two RBI across his last four games, so he'll get a day off Friday to regroup. Brandon Crawford will take Schmitt's place at shortstop and bat ninth.
Jun 6, 2023
Breather Tuesday
Schmitt will take a seat Tuesday versus the Rockies, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt will get a day off after he went 1-for-12 with a double and four strikeouts while starting all three games of the Giants' series with Baltimore. Veteran Brandon Crawford will replace him at shortstop and bat ninth in the series opener with Colorado.

Three more hits Monday
Schmitt (ankle) went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored in Monday's 14-4 win over the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt was given Sunday off to recover from a minor ankle issue. He returned to the lineup with his third multi-hit effort in his last five games, and the second three-hit game of his young career. Monday gave fans and fantasy managers a glimpse to what the Giants' infield sans Thairo Estrada (wrist) may look like versus southpaws, with Schmitt at second base, J.D. Davis at third and Brandon Crawford at shortstop, while Brett Wisely hit the bench. Schmitt may see more time at the keystone in the near term if Crawford resumes a starting role at shortstop. Schmitt is slashing .342/.351/.500 with two home runs, two stolen bases, 15 RBI and 12 runs scored through his first 20 major-league contests.
May 29, 2023
Back in lineup Monday
Schmitt (ankle) is back in the lineup for Monday's game against the Pirates, KXSF Sports on Twitter reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt sat out Sunday after tweaking his ankle Saturday, but he's feeling well enough to give it a go in this one. He'll be at second base Monday while Brandon Crawford handles shortstop.
May 28, 2023
Out of lineup Sunday
Schmitt (ankle) is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game versus the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt received treatment on his ankle after rolling it during Saturday's game against the Brewers, but he told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle that he's "absolutely fine" and that this is just a regular day of rest. Schmitt should be considered day-to-day at this point, and it sounds like he's available off the bench against Milwaukee for Sunday's series finale.
May 27, 2023
Getting treatment on ankle
Schmitt is receiving treatment on his ankle after rolling it during Saturday's game against the Brewers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt was able to stay in the game, but it was clearly bothering the infielder for the remainder of Saturday's win for the Giants over the Brewers. He should be considered day-to-day at this stage.
May 25, 2023
Plates two, steals base
Schmitt went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored in Thursday's 5-0 win over the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt contributed a two-run double in the Giants' four-run eighth inning. After hitting safely in nine of his first 10 major-league games, Schmitt has cooled off a bit, going 5-for-22 (.227) over his last six contests. The infielder is slashing .339/.339/.516 with two home runs, two steals, 12 RBI and nine runs scored through 62 plate appearances, and it appears the Giants are committed to getting his bat -- and perhaps more notably, his glove -- into the lineup on a near-everyday basis.
May 23, 2023
Gets first day off Tuesday
Schmitt is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
This is the first day off for Schmitt since he joined the Giants' major-league roster May 9. Brandon Crawford is also sitting Tuesday. Thairo Estrada will play shortstop and J.D. Davis will cover first base. Brett Wisely is at second.
May 21, 2023
Registers first career steal
Schmitt went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's 7-5 win over the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt's shown off some power and plenty of defensive highlights, and now he's added his first major-league steal in his 12th contest. The infielder is slashing .383/.383/.596 with two home runs, nine RBI, seven runs scored and four doubles through 47 plate appearances. He's seen consistent playing time between third base and shortstop, with an occasional turn at second base. As long as his bat stays hot, there should be room for him in the lineup.
May 16, 2023
Delivers another two-hit night
Schmitt went 2-for-4 with a double in Monday's 6-3 victory over the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
For the first time in his brief career, Schmitt didn't have a hit Sunday. He responded with his fifth multi-hit game of the season Monday. He's only played in seven games. He's slashing a hilarious .464/.464/.821 to start his career. Even with Brandon Crawford back in the lineup, Schmitt is likely to stick around with this incredible production.
May 12, 2023
Finishes triple shy of cycle
Schmitt went 4-for-4 with one double, one homer, three RBI and two runs scored in Thursday's 6-2 victory over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt was just getting started when he hammered a second-inning curveball 443 feet. He capped his night with a ninth-inning double to push the lead to 3-0. The rookie has torn up major-league pitching in his first three games. He has collected at least two hits in every game and is sporting a 2.000 OPS. Brandon Crawford is expected to return soon, but Schmitt can play all over the infield increasing his odds of sticking around.
May 10, 2023
Homers in debut
Schmitt went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Schmitt's first hit in the majors was a long solo shot in the fourth inning off Washington starter Patrick Corbin. Earlier Tuesday, Schmitt earned his first call-up after slashing .313/.352/.410 with a home run, 22 RBI, 19 runs scored and three stolen bases through 32 contests with Triple-A Sacramento. His surge through the minors last year has bolstered his prospect status, with his power and defense likely to help the Giants as long as he's on the roster. The natural third baseman filled in at shortstop Tuesday, and he can also play some second base, though Thairo Estrada has that position on lock in the majors.
