Another four-inning outing
Schmidt did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing two runs on eight hits over four innings in a 5-2 victory over the Royals. He struck out three without issuing any walks.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old hurler limited the damage to a run-scoring single by Nelson Velazquez in the first frame and a Salvador Perez solo homer in the third, but was removed after just four innings for the second consecutive outing. Schmidt enjoyed a solid 14-start stretch between May 25 and Aug. 8 during which he posted a 6-2 record with a 3.09 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 56:15 K:BB across 70 innings. However, the right-hander faded down the stretch, accumulating a 5.73 ERA and 1.52 WHIP across his final nine starts (44 innings) and will close out his 2023 campaign with a record of 9-9, a 4.64 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 149:46 K:BB in 159 innings.

Goes just four innings Monday
Schmidt allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three batters over four innings in a no-decision against Arizona on Monday.
ANALYSIS
The only runs Schmidt allowed came on an Alek Thomas double in the first inning. However, after a clean second frame, the right-handed hurler labored in the third and fourth, allowing a pair of runners in each inning. He didn't return for the fifth after having thrown 79 pitches. This was Schmidt's shortest outing since Aug. 14, when he gave up eight runs over 2.1 frames against Atlanta. He figures to have one more start remaining this season, which lines up to come against the Royals over the weekend.

Struggles against Blue Jays
Schmidt (9-9) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks over five innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
It's been a tough stretch for Schmidt, who's pitched to a 5.48 ERA over his last four starts (21.1 innings). He was hurt by the home-run ball Tuesday -- three of Toronto's runs came on a pair of homers, including a George Springer blast to lead off the game. Overall, Schmidt sports a 4.65 ERA with a 1.33 WHIP and 143:43 K:BB through 30 starts (151 innings) this season. The 27-year-old right-hander will look to get back on track in his next start, currently scheduled for this weekend against Arizona.
Sep 15, 2023
Takes no-decision in nightcap
Schmidt allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out three batters over 5.1 innings in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against Boston.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt had to wait a while to make this start -- it was originally scheduled for Monday but got pushed back due to a pair of rainouts. He fell behind 2-0 in the first frame but recovered enough to last 5.1 innings and depart with a lead, though he had to ultimately settle for a no-decision. Schmidt gave up exactly three earned runs for his third straight start, though this was arguably the least impressive of that trio as he struck out just three batters compared to a combined 13 across the other two. Barring any more weather issues, he's set to face Toronto at home next week in his next scheduled start.
Sep 13, 2023
Start postponed again
Schmidt won't make his scheduled start after Wednesday's game against Boston was postponed due to inclement weather.
ANALYSIS
After having his start pushed back from Monday due to rain, poor weather conditions will force Schmidt to wait a bit longer before making his next start. The Yankees and Red Sox will play a doubleheader Thursday, and Schmidt will presumably start one of the two games.
Sep 11, 2023
Monday start postponed
Schmidt won't make his scheduled start after Monday's game against the Yankees was postponed due to inclement weather, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt is now slated to toe the rubber Wednesday. Randy Vazquez will start Game 1 of Tuesday's twin bill and Carlos Rodon is set to handle the nightcap, per Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

Notches ninth victory
Schmidt (9-8) earned the win over Detroit on Wednesday, allowing three runs on five hits and no walks while striking out six batters over 6.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt gave up a run on two hits in the first inning, then rolled through the following five frames, at one point retiring 16 straight hitters. The right-hander had his final line tarnished a bit during the seventh, when he gave up three hits and two runs while retiring just one batter, but he was still able to finish with a quality start and a win. Schmidt came into the contest without a victory over his previous four appearances, a span during which he posted a 6.52 ERA and 1.66 WHIP over 19.1 innings. In his first full season as a starter, he's posted a 4.54 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 139:38 K:BB across 140.2 frames.
Aug 31, 2023
Falls apart in fifth frame
Schmidt tossed 4.2 innings in a no-decision against Detroit on Thursday, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven batters.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt was solid through four frames, holding the Tigers scoreless while yielding just two hits. The right-hander couldn't keep it going in the fifth, as Zack Short led off the inning with a solo shot and Detroit scored twice more before Schmidt was lifted with two outs. This was just the second time in his past nine starts that Schmidt has failed to complete five innings, and he now has a 4.56 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 133:38 K:BB over 134.1 frames on the season.
Aug 26, 2023
Tough luck loss
Schmidt (8-8) took the loss Saturday, allowing three runs on six hits and zero walks over 6.2 innings against the Rays. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Two of the three runs charged to Schmidt were unearned and the Yankees' offense didn't provide any run support, resulting in an unfortunate loss for the 27-year-old. Aside from a bad outing against Atlanta on Aug. 14, Schmidt has been solid since the All-Star break, posting a 4-1 record with a 3.20 ERA and 0.97 WHIP across 39.1 innings in his other seven second-half starts. The right-handed hurler is currently slated to face Detroit on the road next week.
Aug 20, 2023
Strikes out eight in no-decision
Schmidt did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over 5.2 innings in a 6-5 loss against the Red Sox. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Despite failing to record the win, it was an encouraging bounce-back performance from Schmidt after he allowed eight runs in his last outing against Atlanta. Overall, the 27-year-old right-hander is 8-7 this season with a 4.68 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 121:35 K:BB across 25 starts (123 innings). Schmidt's currently lined up for a road matchup with the Rays in his next outing.
Aug 14, 2023
Tagged for eight runs in loss
Schmidt (8-7) took the loss Monday, allowing eight runs on nine hits and two walks over 2.1 innings in an 11-3 defeat against Atlanta. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt, who had held opponents to three runs or fewer in his last 15 starts, was the latest victim of Atlanta's relentless lineup. The 27-year-old right-hander allowed a season-high eight runs on nine hits while recording just seven outs. Schmidt's ERA is up to 4.76 with a 1.36 WHIP and 113:33 K:BB across 24 starts (117.1 innings) this season. He'll look to rebound in his next outing, currently scheduled for this weekend against Boston.
Aug 9, 2023
Dazzles in win
Schmidt (8-6) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk over 5.1 innings against the White Sox. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt picked up his sixth win in his last eight appearances and has now gone 11 straight starts without taking a loss. Despite allowing just four hits and fanning seven batters, Schmidt fell two outs shy of a quality start and was pulled at 88 pitches. His lone blemish on the day came on a solo homer by Andrew Benintendi, the sixth long ball Schmidt has allowed in as many appearances. Tuesday's outing also marked his 14th consecutive start allowing three or fewer runs, a streak that dates back to May 14. The 27-year-old is expected to take the mound against the Marlins this weekend.
Aug 4, 2023
Solid in no-decision
Schmidt did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over five innings against Houston. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt's now gone 14 straight starts without allowing more than three runs. His last loss came on June 6 -- since then, he's gone 5-0 with a 3.75 ERA across 10 starts. Overall, the 27-year-old Schmidt is 7-6 with a 4.35 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 103:30 K:BB across 22 starts (109.2 innings) this season. He's currently lined up for a road matchup with the White Sox in his next outing.
Jul 29, 2023
Snares another win
Schmidt (7-6) earned the win Saturday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over five innings against Baltimore. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt added another tally to the win column Saturday, marking his fifth victory in his last six appearances and extending his streak without a loss to nine starts. Though the right-hander hasn't had an outstanding season, he's been a rock-solid arm in the back end of the Yankees rotation, having allowed three or fewer runs in every start dating back to May 14. During that stretch (64.2 innings), Schmidt owns a 3.20 ERA with a 51:15 K:BB. He's tentatively scheduled for a home matchup against the Astros for his next start.
Jul 21, 2023
Pitches into sixth in win
Schmidt (6-6) scattered three earned runs on five hits and one walk over 5.2 innings Friday in the Yankees' win over the Royals. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt got himself into trouble in what became a three-run fourth inning for Kansas City, but he bounced back to make into the top of the sixth and notched his sixth victory of the 2023 campaign. Working as a locked-in member of the Yankees' major-league rotation for the first time in his career, the 27-year-old holds a 4.33 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 97:28 K:BB through 99.2 frames this season. He lines up to face the division-rival Orioles in Baltimore next time out.
Jul 15, 2023
Collects fifth win
Schmidt (5-6) allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out eight over six innings to earn the win Saturday over the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt has won his last three starts, and Saturday's sharp effort gave him his first quality start since June 6. The eight strikeouts also matched his season high. He hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his last 11 appearances, providing steady pitching after a rough start to the season. Schmidt has a 4.31 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 95:27 K:BB through 94 innings this year. He's projected for a favorable home matchup against the Royals next week.
Jul 4, 2023
Grabs fourth win
Schmidt (4-6) earned the win Tuesday, allowing three runs on five hits over five innings against Baltimore. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt got through the first four innings unscathed Tuesday before the Orioles put up three runs in the fifth on home runs from Aaron Hicks and Adam Frazier. However, the Yankees would retake the lead in the bottom half of the frame, setting up Schmidt for the win. The 27-year-old Schmidt has pitched to a 2.85 ERA over his last nine starts (47.1 innings). Overall, he sports a 4.43 ERA with a 1.40 WHIP and 86:26 K:BB through 18 starts (87.1 innings) this season.
Jun 29, 2023
Notches third win
Schmidt (3-6) earned the win Thursday, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks over 5.1 innings against the Athletics. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his last eight starts. The win is just his second in that span, despite pitching to a 2.55 ERA. After a tough start to the year, Schmidt's lowered his ERA to 4.37 with a 1.42 WHIP and 79:26 K:BB through 17 starts (82.1 innings). The 27-year-old right-hander currently lines up for a home matchup with the Orioles in his next outing.
Jun 23, 2023
Solid outing Friday
Schmidt allowed an unearned run on six hits and a walk while striking out three over 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Rangers on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt turned in another solid outing, though his winless stretch extended to six starts. Over that span, the right-hander has allowed eight runs (seven earned) across 32 innings with a 22:7 K:BB. It's an improvement on his 4.32 ERA and 1.42 WHIP through 77 innings across 16 starts overall. He continues to be an effective fill-in while the Yankees wait for Carlos Rodon (back) and Nester Cortes (shoulder) to return to the rotation.
Jun 18, 2023
Allows two in no-decision
Schmidt did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over 4.2 innings against Boston. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt was solid through his first four innings, working around traffic to hold Boston off the board. However, he'd surrender two runs in the fifth before the Yankees turned to the bullpen. Still, the 27-year-old Schmidt has looked better after a rough start to the year. He's pitched to a 2.56 ERA with 25:8 K:BB across his last six outings (31.2 innings). Overall, Schmidt's 2-6 with a 4.65 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 73:22 K:BB through 15 starts (71.2 innings) this season.
Jun 17, 2023
Scheduled start rained out
Schmidt's scheduled start Saturday against the Red Sox has been rained out, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The game will be made up as part of a split doubleheader Sunday. Per Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News, Schmidt will start the afternoon game, with Luis Severino on the mound for the nightcap.
Jun 11, 2023
Yields one run in no-decision
Schmidt allowed one run on four hits over 5.1 innings in Sunday's loss to Boston. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt didn't face much trouble aside from Justin Turner's solo shot in the second inning but failed to get a win after Boston's late comeback. After posting an ugly 6.30 ERA through nine outings, Schmidt has registered a 2.33 ERA over his last five starts. He's lowered his season mark to 4.70 next to a 70:19 K:BB, though he's 2-6 and hasn't earned a win since May 19. Schmidt is lined up for a rematch with the Red Sox in Boston.
Jun 6, 2023
No support Tuesday
Schmidt (2-6) took the loss Tuesday, allowing three runs on six hits over six innings against the White Sox. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Though Schmidt fell to his sixth loss of the season, he managed to lock down his second quality start of the campaign, allowing three runs across six frames. He never had a chance for the win, as the Yankees' offense failed to record a hit until the seventh inning. Tuesday's outing added to an already impressive stretch of starts for Schmidt, who touts a 2.49 ERA and an 18:5 K/BB across his last four appearances (21.2 innings).
Jun 1, 2023
Blanks Mariners over 5.2 innings
Schmidt allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out seven over 5.2 scoreless innings during Wednesday's outing against the Mariners. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt put together his best outing of the season but could not come out with a win after George Kirby shut out the Yankees through eight innings of work. Schmidt has now gone at least five innings in three straight starts while allowing two runs or less. He was noticeably effective against the Mariners' lefties, as they went just 1-for-10 against him. For the year, left-handed hitters have a .330 batting average against the 27-year-old, so Wednesday's accomplishment was particularly impressive. Schmidt has dropped his ERA to a 5.01 to go along with a 1.51 WHIP and 65:19 K:BB over 55.2 innings. He'll look to continue his successful stretch next week in a home start against the White Sox.
May 26, 2023
Pitches well but takes loss
Schmidt (2-5) took the loss against Baltimore on Thursday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out four batters over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt had to work hard to get through five frames, as Baltimore fouled off 26 of his offerings, resulting in the hurler tossing 97 total pitches. Aside from that, it was a pretty smooth start for the right-hander -- he allowed just one extra-base hit and one run while keeping the ball in the park for his third straight start. However, the Yankees' offense couldn't solve Kyle Gibson, causing Schmidt to take his fifth loss. There was some thought earlier in the campaign that Schmidt could be pushed out of the rotation upon the return of Luis Severino, but he's pitched well enough recently to keep his spot, allowing two or fewer runs in four of his past five starts. When Severino returned last weekend, it was Jhony Brito who was optioned to the minors.
May 20, 2023
Six strikeouts in win
Schmidt (2-4) earned the win Friday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over five innings against the Reds. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt posted five scoreless frames, but he was pulled in the sixth after allowing back-to-back hits to start the inning. Both baserunners came around to score, but the Yankees bullpen held the lead and helped the right-hander earn his second win. It was a solid bounce-back outing for Schmidt, who allowed a season-high seven runs to Tampa Bay last time out, but he still holds a 6.00 ERA across 45 innings and has allowed three more home runs than he did in 29 appearances (57.2 innings) last year.
May 15, 2023
Tagged for seven runs
Schmidt (1-4) took the loss Sunday, allowing seven runs on six hits and three walks over 4.2 innings against the Rays. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt had been solid in his previous two outings, allowing just two earned runs in his last 10.1 innings. He struggled Sunday, however, allowing a run in the first inning and another two in the third before the Rays posted a five spot in the fifth. Schmidt now has a 6.30 ERA with a 1.65 WHIP and 48:14 K:BB through nine starts (40 innings). The 27-year-old Schmidt isn't likely to stick in the Yankees rotation for long with Luis Severino (lat) nearing a return.
May 9, 2023
Pitches six frames
Schmidt (1-3) earned the win Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over six innings against the Athletics. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt made it six innings for the first time all season, fanning seven batters and allowing just two runs to earn his first win. However, Schmidts' trouble with power sustained, giving up a solo home run to Jordan Diaz in the fourth inning, marking his eighth long ball in as many starts. Though Schmidt will likely find himself on the outside looking in on the Yankees rotation once Carlos Rodon (back) and Luis Severino (lat) return from the injured list, he should remain a high-risk, high-reward streaming option given his high strikeout rate (10.95 K/9).
May 4, 2023
Can't get through fifth
Schmidt did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two unearned runs on six hits and two walks over 4.1 innings during a 4-3 win over Cleveland in extras. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Both of Schmidt's first-inning runs were unearned due to a fielding error by Anthony Rizzo, but the right-hander was still shaky and got pulled in the fifth after allowing a one-out single to Jose Ramirez. Schmidt has given up multiple runs in each of his first seven starts this season and hasn't completed more than six innings yet. His 5.83 ERA and 1.70 WHIP need work, but his 36:9 K:BB through 29.1 innings is encouraging. He'll look to find a rhythm during his next start, which will likely come during a three-game set versus Oakland.
Apr 28, 2023
Rocked again
Schmidt (0-3) took the loss Friday, allowing five runs on 10 hits and one walk over five innings against the Rangers. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt made it through five innings for the second consecutive start. But the rookie was shelled. He allowed 10 hits and five earned runs, both season highs. Schmidt did collect eight strikeouts and is up to 32 punch outs in 25 innings. However his ERA is a disappointing 6.84.
Apr 23, 2023
Shows improvement in loss
Schmidt (0-2) took the loss Sunday, allowing three runs (all unearned) on three hits and a walk over 5.2 innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt held the Blue Jays off the board through five innings Sunday, setting down the first 13 batters faced. However, he unraveled in the sixth following an Anthony Volpe error, allowing three runs on back-to-back home runs from Vladimir Guerrero and Dalton Vasho. Still, the outing was a step in the right direction for Schmidt, who figures to remain in the Yankees' rotation until Luis Severino (lat) and Carlos Rodon (forearm) are ready to return. The 27-year-old Schmidt lowers his ERA to 6.30 with a 1.55 WHIP and 24:6 K:BB through five starts this season.
Apr 19, 2023
Handed first loss Tuesday
Schmidt (0-1) allowed four runs on six hits and struck out five over 3.2 innings while taking the loss against the Angels on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt's struggles continued into Tuesday's start. He kicked off the game by allowing a leadoff double to Taylor Ward and then served a hanging breaking ball to Shohei Ohtani that found its way into the right field seats for a quick 2-0 deficit. The 27-year-old ran into more issues in the fourth, allowing two doubles and a single to give the Halos a 4-0 cushion. Schmidt's numbers through four starts are less than ideal. He now sits at an 8.79 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and a 16:5 K:BB over 14.1 innings and is showing major vulnerability against lefties so far, who are hitting .412 against him. Manager Aaron Boone said after the game that Schmidt is still sticking in the starting rotation for now. The team is working to get back Luis Severino (lat) and Carlos Rodon (forearm) from the IL, but until either of them are activated, Schmidt should still have the opportunity to remain a starter.
Apr 12, 2023
Continues to struggle
Schmidt allowed three earned runs off six hits over four innings in Wednesday's win over the Guardians while walking one batter and striking out three. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Wednesday marks Schmidt's best start of the season so far, although that isn't necessarily saying much. The 27-year-old righty has now allowed 10 earned runs over 10.2 innings across three starts. He's still been able to strike batters out at a rate of 9.3 K/9, but so far he has provided little fantasy value for those not in especially deep leagues.
Apr 7, 2023
Escapes with no-decision Friday
Schmidt didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 7-6 loss to the Orioles, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
It was another shaky outing for the right-hander, who needed 84 pitches (53 strikes) to record only 10 outs and put more strain on the bullpen. Schmidt has yet to complete the fourth inning through two starts this season, and his 9.45 ERA suggests the only thing keeping him in the Yankees' rotation is the team's lack of healthy alternatives.
Apr 1, 2023
Shaky beginning to 2023
Schmidt didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 7-5 loss to the Giants, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk over 3.1 innings while striking out five.
ANALYSIS
While the K:BB was strong and he generated 13 swinging strikes among his 76 pitches, three of the five hits off Schmidt went for extra bases including homers by Joc Pederson and Brandon Crawford -- the latter of which chased the right-hander from the game. Schmidt's spot in the rotation is fairly secure for now given all the injuries in the Yankees' rotation, but he'll need to find a way to keep the ball in the park to avoid getting bumped once other pitchers get healthier.
Mar 25, 2023
Lines up to start second game
Schmidt is lined up to start the second game of the regular season, as Luis Severino is expected to hit the injured list with a low-grade lat strain, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt may be the Yankees' sixth or seventh starter when everyone is healthy, but injuries to Frankie Montas (shoulder), Carlos Rodon (forearm) and now Severino mean he'll open the year firmly entrenched in the rotation. Assuming he sticks in the second spot in the rotation for at least the first few weeks, his first outings will see him take on the Giants at home before pitching away against the Orioles and Guardians.
Mar 17, 2023
Dominant in spring start
Schmidt tossed five perfect innings against Pittsburgh in a Grapefruit League game Thursday, striking out seven batters.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt needed just 50 pitches to complete five frames in the exhibition contest, throwing 36 strikes while not allowing any baserunners. He mixed in four different pitches -- including his recently developed cutter -- as he furthered his case to be part of the Yankees' rotation this season. Schmidt is expected to be in the rotation for at least the start of the campaign while Carlos Rodon (forearm) works his way back, and the 27-year-old hurler could stick as a starter permanently if he gets off to a strong start.
Mar 9, 2023
Likely to break camp in rotation
Schmidt is likely to open the season in the Yankees' rotation following the injury to Carlos Rodon (forearm), Erik Boland of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
The Yanks had already lost Frankie Montas to shoulder surgery and now will be without Rodon for at least most of April due to a forearm strain. It means an elevated role for Schmidt and also cements Domingo German as a member of the rotation, if he hadn't already been. Schmidt was excellent last season while being used almost exclusively as a reliever, holding a 3.12 ERA and 56:23 K:BB over 57.2 innings. He has plenty of starting experience in the minors, of course, and has been stretched out this spring. The Yankees might also seek pitching help from outside the organization as their depth is tested.
Feb 27, 2023
Opens spring in dominant fashion
Schmidt tossed two perfect innings against Atlanta in a Grapefruit League game Sunday, racking up five strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt is vying to be the Yankees' fifth starter to begin the regular season, and he made a resounding statement toward that goal in his first spring appearance. The right-hander threw 20 of 31 pitches for strikes and mowed down five of the six batters he faced. It's always wise to take spring training performances with a grain of salt, but Schmidt's outing bears more than typical significance because he heavily tested out the new cutter that he developed during the offseason. Per Statcast, Schmidt threw the pitch 11 times Sunday after not deploying it at all last year. If the early results (and his health) hold up, Schmidt could finally live up to the potential the Yankees saw when they used a first-round draft pick on him in 2017.
Feb 20, 2023
Adding cutter to arsenal
Schmidt developed a cutter during the offseason, and he hopes the pitch will help him be more effective against lefty hitters, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The directive to develop the new pitch came from the organization and was predicated on the belief that the cutter could come easily to Schmidt given the natural cut and high spin rate on his four-seam fastball. Per Joyce, metrics on the pitch have looked good when Schmidt has thrown it during bullpens, and the right-hander said he already feels comfortable deploying it. If the cutter proves to make Schmidt more effective against left-handed batters, it could help him win the fifth-starter spot in the rotation to begin the campaign, as he's currently competing with Domingo German for the role that is up for grabs due to Frankie Montas' impending right shoulder surgery.
Jan 14, 2023
Could see early starts
Schmidt is a candidate to spend the first month of the season as the Yankees' fifth starter, with Frankie Montas out until at least May due to shoulder inflammation, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees have yet to announce their plans and could still bring in another arm from outside the organization, but unless that happens, the competition would appear to be between Schmidt and Domingo German. Schmidt outpitched German in terms of ERA (3.12 vs. 3.61) and FIP (3.60 vs. 4.44) last season, though all but three of his appearances came as a reliever. German, by contrast, started 14 games while appearing just once in relief.
Sep 26, 2022
Healthy again
Schmidt (foot) made two appearances during the Yankees' four-game series with the Red Sox over the weekend, covering two innings while allowing four earned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out one.
ANALYSIS
After he was removed from his Sept. 18 relief appearance in Milwaukee due to a foot injury, Schmidt received a few days off before the Yankees made him available out of the bullpen. The right-hander was hit hard in his return to action Thursday, as he allowed four of the seven batters he faced to reach base to squander a 3-0 lead. The Yankees eventually came back to win Thursday's contest, and Schmidt rebounded in another high-leverage opportunity Saturday, retiring the side en route to notching his third hold of the season. He should remain an integral part of the Yankees bullpen during what's left of the campaign.
Sep 18, 2022
Exits Sunday's matchup
Schmidt was removed from Sunday's game against the Brewers in the bottom of the eighth inning due to an apparent foot/ankle injury, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt allowed two runs on three hits and no walks while striking out four in 2.1 relief innings Sunday, but he was hit by a comebacker with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning. He immediately exited the game but was able to walk off the field under his own power. It's not yet clear whether he'll require a trip to the injured list.
Sep 10, 2022
Works out of bullpen
Schmidt struck out two and scattered two hits and one walk over three scoreless innings in relief Thursday in the Yankees' 4-3 loss to the Twins.
ANALYSIS
After making a pair of starts, Schmidt moved back to the bullpen Thursday with Nestor Cortes (groin) making his return from the 15-day injured list. However, because Cortes wasn't fully stretched out following his stint on the IL, Schmidt ended up piggybacking him in what essentially ended up being a tandem start. Cortes shouldn't face any major limitations the next time his turn in the rotation comes up, so Schmidt will likely serve as a more traditional multi-inning reliever for the foreseeable future.

Allows two runs in loss
Schmidt (5-4) took the loss Saturday, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out two and walking none over 4.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Despite allowing no walks and four hits, Schmidt picked up the loss thanks to a Yandy Diaz two-run single in the third inning that would turn out to be the winning runs for the Rays. This was Schmidt's third appearance this season as a starter, although he may be called upon to start more games with Nestor Cortes on the IL. Schmidt seems to have a short leash for the Yankees as a starter, which limits his fantasy upside.
Sep 2, 2022
Remains in rotation
Schmidt will pick up his next start Saturday against the Rays at Tropicana Field.
ANALYSIS
He'll be making his second straight turn through the rotation as a replacement for Nestor Cortes (groin). While making his second start of the season for the Yankees in his last trip to the mound Aug. 28 in Oakland, Schmidt struck out seven over 4.1 innings, but he took the loss after surrendering four earned runs on eight hits and one walk.
Aug 28, 2022
Takes loss Sunday
Schmidt (5-3) took the loss Sunday versus the Athletics. He allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt surrendered a pair of runs in each of the first and third innings, and the Yankees' offense couldn't cover the damage. This was Schmidt's second start of the year, and his first June 16. It was also the right-hander's longest major-league outing of the season. Through 37.1 innings with the Yankees, he's posted a 2.89 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 36:19 K:BB in 18 appearances, mainly as a long reliever. He's made all eight of his minor-league appearances this year as a starter, and he may get another turn in the rotation with Nestor Cortes (groin) on the injured list. If that happens, Schmidt is tentatively projected for a road start versus the Rays next weekend.
Aug 25, 2022
Entering rotation
Schmidt will enter the Yankees' rotation and start Sunday against the Athletics, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Nestor Cortes was placed on the injured list Thursday due to a groin injury, opening a spot in the rotation. With Luis Severino (lat) also still out, the Yankees will need to shift to depth to fill their rotation in the short term. Schmidt was recalled to the majors Monday and threw three scoreless innings in relief to earn the win Tuesday against the Mets. Prior to his promotion, Schmidt had worked as many as six innings in the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre rotation, so he may not be on a strict pitch count.
Aug 24, 2022
Nabs win in relief
Schmidt (5-2) earned the win over the Mets on Tuesday, allowing three hits and issuing three walks over three scoreless innings. He did not strike out any batters.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt entered the contest in the top of the sixth inning and retired Mark Canha with a runner on second base to keep the game tied. He allowed three baserunners over the following two frames but kept the Mets off the scoreboard, and he appeared poised to finish off the contest after retiring the first two batters he faced in the ninth. Schmidt then allowed the next three hitters to reach base and was replaced by Wandy Peralta, who got the final out for a save. The outing was in line with how Schmidt has been deployed this season -- he's made only one start but has thrown three or more innings in five of 17 appearances and has tossed more than one frame in 11 different outings. Schmidt has been effective during his time in the majors this season, registering a 2.18 ERA and 1.24 WHIP while picking up five wins and two saves over 33 innings.
Aug 22, 2022
Recalled by Yankees
Schmidt was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt was sent down by the Yankees at the beginning of August but will rejoin the major-league club following a three-week stint in the minors. Although the right-hander has operated exclusively as a starter at the Triple-A level this year, he'll likely serve as a multi-inning relief option once again in the big leagues after Scott Effross (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday.
Aug 1, 2022
Optioned to Triple-A
Schmidt was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees traded for Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino earlier in the day, so they need to clear space on the active roster. Schmidt has a 2.40 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 29 strikeouts in 30 innings across 16 MLB appearances this year.
Jul 31, 2022
Another three-inning save
Schmidt allowed two hits and a walk while striking out five across three scoreless innings to earn the save Saturday against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt recorded a three-inning save for his second consecutive outing, this time maintaining a six-run lead. Though low-leverage save chances are often fluky, the Yankees seem to be making a choice to use Schmidt in this manner since Michael King (elbow) was lost for the season. As a result, Schmidt could be a sneaky source of a handful of saves in the final two months of the season. He'll also help with ratios, as he has maintained a 2.67 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 27 innings on the campaign.
Jul 25, 2022
Three-inning save
Schmidt picked up the save in Sunday's 6-0 victory over the Orioles, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out three and walking two over three innings.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt saw his first action for the Yankees since June 22. It comes after the Yankees lost multi-inning reliever Michael King to an elbow injury. Schmidt took on a similar role to King in Sunday's contest, earning a nine-out save. He threw 36 of 56 pitches for strikes and although he allowed two hits and two walks, Schmidt was able to keep the O's off the board. It was his first save of the year. The righty reliever will take a 2.67 ERA into his next appearance.
Jul 23, 2022
Back in majors
Schmidt was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt will presumably join the bullpen as a multi-inning reliever in the short term. Domingo German didn't fare well in his season debut Thursday against the Astros, so it's possible Schmidt could get spot starts going forward. Schmidt has a 4.15 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 25 strikeouts in 17.1 innings at Triple-A and has a 3.00 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 21 strikeouts in 24 innings in the majors.
Jun 23, 2022
Sent to Triple-A
The Yankees optioned Schmidt to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
After striking out five while tossing three scoreless innings last Thursday in a spot start against the Rays, Schmidt moved back to the bullpen this week after Luis Severino was cleared to return from the COVID-19-related injured list. Schmidt appeared in both of the past two games and gave up one earned run over 1.2 innings, and he'll now be moved off the 26-man active roster with the Yankees needing to clear room for waiver pickup Albert Abreu. It's unclear if the Yankees plan to have Schmidt stretch out for starting duty at Triple-A or continue working as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen.
Jun 17, 2022
Effective in spot start
Schmidt allowed one hit and one walk while striking out five across three scoreless innings Thursday against the Rays. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt got a spot start Thursday after Luis Severino was briefly placed on the COVID-19 injured list. Schmidt had not thrown more than 3.1 innings in any outing this season, so he was limited in length. However, he was very effective and racked up eight swinging strikes on 50 pitches while allowing a single as his only hit. Schmidt has pitched very well in a bulk relief role this season, maintaining a 2.82 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 20:11 K:BB across 22.1 frames.
Jun 16, 2022
Getting spot start Thursday
Schmidt will start Thursday's game against the Rays after Luis Severino was placed on the COVID-19 injured list, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
While Schmidt is well rested, having not pitched since June 10, he also hasn't thrown more than two innings since he threw 2.2 innings May 14. With this in mind, it will likely be a bullpen game for the Yankees and Schmidt is unlikely to go deep enough to qualify for the win. He has a 3.26 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 15:10 K:BB in 19.1 innings through 11 appearances.
May 25, 2022
Earns win in relief
Schmidt (3-2) picked up the win against Baltimore on Tuesday, allowing an unearned run and striking out one batter over two innings.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt checked in for the 10th inning and retired all three batters he faced to keep the score tied. He remained in for the 11th frame and allowed the designated runner to score on a pair of groundouts, but the Yankees walked off with a win in the bottom of the inning to provide Schmidt with the win. The right-hander has allowed only one earned run over 13 innings this season while posting a 10:4 K:BB.
May 13, 2022
Recalled by Yankees
Schmidt was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt was sent down by New York on May 1, but he'll rejoin the big-league club after spending just under two weeks in the minors. The right-hander has made four relief appearances for the Yankees this year and has posted a 1.08 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 8.1 innings.
May 1, 2022
Sent down by Yankees
Schmidt was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt made the Yankees' Opening Day roster and recorded a 2-2 record in his first four relief appearances of the season. The right-hander posted a 1.08 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 8.1 innings. Although the Yankees need to trim their active roster to 26 players by Monday, it's somewhat surprising to see Schmidt as one of the cuts given his strong performance early in the year. If the team's pitching staff deals with injuries at some point, the 26-year-old will be a candidate to rejoin the big-league club as a starter or bullpen option.
Apr 20, 2022
Grabs first win
Schmidt (1-2) earned the win Tuesday against the Tigers after allowing two hits with six strikeouts and one walk across 3.1 scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old picked up the loss in both of his previous appearances despite giving up only one earned run, but he secured his first victory of 2022 on Tuesday after starter Gerrit Cole failed to make it through two innings. Schmidt will be unavailable for a few days after throwing 54 pitches, but he should continue to be a multi-inning option out of the bullpen for manager Aaron Boone.
Apr 16, 2022
Suffers loss Friday
Schmidt (0-2) took the loss against Baltimore on Friday, allowing an unearned run over 1.1 innings while walking three.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt took the mound in the 10th inning and succeeded in keeping Baltimore off the board, but the Yankees were unable to produce any runs in the bottom of the frame. The right-hander returned in the 11th and issued back-to-back one-out walks to load the bases before being relieved by Aroldis Chapman. Chapman got Cedric Mullins to strike out but then walked in the winning run. Schmidt has been charged with a loss in each of his two appearances this season, though he has given up only one earned run over four total innings of work.
Apr 10, 2022
Saddled with loss
Schmidt (0-1) took the loss during Sunday's 4-3 defeat at the hands of the Red Sox, allowing one run on one hit with one strikeout in 2.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt relieved starter Jordan Montgomery in the fourth inning and allowed an inherited runner to score on a sacrifice fly but rebounded to retire eight of nine batters faced. That one at-bat was a Bobby Dalbec home run which became the difference in the game. The 26-year-old pitched well Sunday and should maintain a long relief role moving forward despite the loss.
Apr 6, 2022
Makes Opening Day roster
Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated Tuesday that Schmidt has made the team's Opening Day roster, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt was injured most of last season but came into spring training healthy. He was one of the team's top pitchers in Grapefruit League play, posting a 3.86 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 11:2 K:BB across 9.1 innings. The 26-year-od will likely take on a bullpen role to begin the campaign.
Apr 5, 2022
Pushing for roster spot
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday that Schmidt has an "excellent shot" to make the Opening Day roster, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt has enjoyed a strong spring, posting a 3.86 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 11:2 K:BB across 9.1 innings. The right-hander made only two appearances for the big club in 2021 after dealing with an elbow injury for most of the campaign. Schmidt would likely open the season in the bullpen if he indeed breaks camp with the club, but he'd be among the prime candidates for a starting role if a spot in the rotation were to open up.
Sep 19, 2021
Optioned to Triple-A
Schmidt was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt tossed two relief innings in Sunday's 11-1 loss to Cleveland and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out four. The appearance was the right-hander's first since he was recalled Friday, but he'll now head back to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he has recorded a 3.00 ERA and 1.53 WHIP in 15 innings across four appearances (three starts).
Sep 17, 2021
Back in big leagues
Schmidt was recalled by the Yankees on Friday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt has made one major-league appearance this season, giving up five runs one seven this over 4.1 innings in a start against the Mets on Sunday. He's expected to fill a bullpen role this time around.
Sep 13, 2021
Sent back to Triple-A
Schmidt was Bryan Hoch of MLB.com on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt was called up for his first start of the season Sunday against the Mets and pitched poorly, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks in 4.1 innings of work. He'll return to the minors while waiting for his next chance but didn't do much to encourage the Yankees to give him another one any time soon.
Sep 13, 2021
Hit hard in 2021 debut
Schmidt got a no-decision in Sunday's 7-6 loss at the hands of the Mets, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt was thrown into the fire during his season debut and responded with a subpar performance, surrendering earned runs in the first and fifth innings and three unearned runs following an error in the second. Its unclear whether he'll remain with the big-league club though Sunday's start probably didn't aid his prospects.
Sep 12, 2021
Recalled to start Sunday
The Yankees recalled Schmidt from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday. He will start the series finale against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
The righty will make his first big-league appearance of 2021. He's pitched well in four games with the Triple-A club this season, posting a 3.00 ERA and 20:4 K:BB in 15 innings. Schmidt will presumably return to the minors after Sunday's outing, but a strong performance could earn him another start with the Yankees in these last few weeks of the regular season.
Aug 19, 2021
Strong in Triple-A start
Schmidt pitched 3.1 innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out four.
ANALYSIS
In his first appearance at the Triple-A level this season, Schmidt gave up only one hit -- a solo home run -- and worked up to 62 pitches. The right-hander's campaign has been marred by an elbow strain suffered during spring training, but he will look to ramp up in hopes of helping the Yankees in their playoff push down the stretch.
Aug 11, 2021
Activated, optioned to Triple-A
Schmidt (elbow) was activated from the 60-day injured list Wednesday and optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt made his final rehab appearance with Double-A Somerset earlier Wednesday, signaling the end to his time on the injured list with an elbow strain. The right-hander got his workload up to 3.2 innings and should continue ramping up as a starter with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and he could be a rotation option for the Yankees down the stretch.
Aug 7, 2021
Solid in rehab start
Schmidt (elbow) tossed 2.2 innings for Double-A Somerset on Thursday, allowing one run on two hits and a walk while striking out four batters. He is expected to pitch again in five days, per Max Goodman of SI.com.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt continues to progress from a right elbow strain that has wiped out his entire season thus far. Per Goodman, his next rehab outing will likely again be for the Double-A club, though it's possible that he is moved up to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre instead. All signs point to Schmidt being ready to make his major-league season debut by the end of the month.
Aug 5, 2021
Rehab stint transferred to Double-A
Schmidt (elbow) had his rehab assignment transferred to Double-A Somerset on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt allowed a run on a hit and two walks while striking out four in three innings during his lone rehab appearance at Low-A Tampa, and he'll start Thursday's contest against Double-A Bowie. The right-hander has been sidelined since the start of the season due to his elbow injury, but he's made strong progress recently as he trends toward his 2021 debut.
Jul 31, 2021
Progressing in rehab assignment
Schmidt (elbow) was transferred to Low-A Tampa on Saturday to continue his rehab assignment.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt made his first rehab start Monday and struck out five in three scoreless innings for the Yankees' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate. The team hasn't yet announced when the right-hander will make his next rehab appearance, but he'll face another test while facing competition at a full-season affiliate.
Jul 25, 2021
Could begin rehab stint soon
Schmidt (elbow) threw two simulated innings at the Yankees' complex in Florida on Wednesday and could be sent on a minor-league rehab assignment soon, per MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander's first simulated session is said to have gone well, and the organization is now deciding whether to have him toss another sim game or to send him out on a rehab assignment. When he does get back into game action, his first outing is expected to cover three innings and 45 pitches. Schmidt hasn't pitched at all this season after suffering an elbow strain during spring training.
Jul 20, 2021
Sim game on tap
Schmidt (elbow) is scheduled to throw a simulated game Wednesday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old has been throwing off a mound for the past few weeks, and he's now been cleared to face live hitters. Schmidt hasn't pitched this season while recovering from an elbow strain he suffered in spring training, so he's likely still a ways off from potentially rejoining the Yankees as he builds his arm back up.
Jul 19, 2021
Likely out until September
Schmidt (elbow) isn't expected to be reinstated from the 60-day injured list until September, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmdit has been throwing off a mound for several weeks now, but the Yankees have yet to clear him to face hitters. Because of the slow progress in his recovery from a strained right elbow, Schmidt will likely be brought along slowly in his ramp-up program once he advances to facing hitters. The Yankees still plan to develop Schmidt as a starter over the long haul, but due to the extensive time he's already missed, he'll likely be deployed as a reliever if he makes it back to the big club before season's end.
Jun 25, 2021
Could face hitters soon
Schmidt (elbow) will throw approximately two innings off a mound Saturday, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt threw all of his pitches in a throwing session last week, and he'll continue to ramp up his intensity as he recovers from an elbow strain that he sustained in February. Manager Aaron Boone said that the right-hander could face hitters after Saturday's throwing session if all goes well.
Jun 16, 2021
Advancing in recovery
Schmidt (elbow) used all of his pitches during a bullpen session Tuesday, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
A week ago, Schmidt was throwing only fastballs in his bullpens, so it is a promising sign of progress that he is now deploying his full arsenal. The right-hander doesn't yet have a target date to begin a rehab assignment, but he is closing in on throwing to live hitters, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
Jun 9, 2021
Throwing only fastballs
Schmidt (elbow) is throwing bullpens but is not tossing any pitches other than fastballs, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt continues to build up slowly, and a timeframe for his return remains uncertain. The fact that the right-hander isn't yet testing his elbow with any pitches other than fastballs suggests that he isn't particularly close to pitching in games again.
May 30, 2021
Completes bullpen session
Schmidt (elbow) threw a bullpen session Sunday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old has slowly been building up his arm by playing long toss over the past few weeks, but he's now thrown his first bullpen session since suffering the elbow strain in February. Schmidt should continue throwing bullpen sessions over the next couple weeks before facing live hitters.
May 27, 2021
Progress remains slow
Schmidt (elbow) has played long toss up to 120 feet but still hasn't resumed throwing off a mound, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt is very slowly working his way back from an elbow strain suffered back in February, and the organization appears to have no desire to rush his return. Manager Aaron Boone has indicated that the right-hander is doing well, but given his current rehab status, it seems unlikely that Schmidt will be able to return to game action before late June.
May 15, 2021
Yet to throw beyond 100 feet
Schmidt (elbow) has been playing long toss at around 100 feet, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Aaron Boone indicated Friday that Schmidt is doing well, but the right-hander has yet to progress beyond long toss. The Yankees are likely to be cautious with Schmidt's recovery from a a right elbow strain, though they still expect him to make an impact with the big club at some point during the season. He'll likely start the campaign at Triple-A when he's ready to pitch.
May 3, 2021
Impressing during rehab process
Yankees Senior Director of Player Development Kevin Reese said Monday that Schmidt (elbow) has looked "fantastic" during his rehab program in Tampa, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Reese didn't elaborate on where exactly Schmidt stands in his recovery from a right elbow strain, but the 25-year-old has apparently steered clear of any setbacks since beginning a throwing program more than a week ago. Since the Yankees moved Schmidt to the 60-day injured list prior to Opening Day, he won't be eligible for reinstatement until late May, but Reese appears confident the right-hander will make an impact for the big club at some point in 2021. Once deemed healthy, Schmidt will most likely report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Apr 25, 2021
Resumes throwing
Schmidt (elbow) has begun throwing again, Jordan Horrobin of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt landed on the 60-day injured list in late March and recently received a cortisone injection. The right-hander isn't eligible to return from the IL until June 1, and he appears to have a long recovery road ahead as he tries to ramp back into game shape. "Obviously, it'll be a while, because he's starting from scratch essentially again, but he's doing well," manager Aaron Boone stated Saturday.
Apr 12, 2021
Receives cortisone shot
Schmidt (elbow) received a cortisone injection Monday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt will be out of action for quite a while, as he landed on the 60-day injured list with an elbow strain in late March. The team is optimistic that he'll be able to begin throwing later this week or sometime next week following the shot, but he'll still need to go through a lengthy recovery process before returning to game action.
Apr 11, 2021
Getting second opinion on elbow
Manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Schmidt (elbow) will seek a second opinion before the Yankees decide the next step in the right-hander's rehab program, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
According to Boone, Schmidt is still exhibited symptoms of the extensor strain he sustained in late February, which has prevented him from starting up a throwing program a couple weeks as had been anticipated. Boone noted that he remains optimistic Schmidt will avoid surgery to address the elbow injury, but the 25-year-old's lack of meaningful progress in his recovery thus far is concerning nonetheless. Even if the second opinion brings positive news, Schmidt likely won't be ready to make his 2021 debut until at least late May after he was placed on the 60-day injured list prior to Opening Day.
Apr 3, 2021
Yet to resume throwing
Schmidt (elbow) has yet to resume throwing, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hoch says the team is waiting for Schmidt to be completely asymptomatic, which is odd language regarding an elbow strain, which was the given diagnosis when Schmidt was placed on the 60-day injured list. Nonetheless, it sounds like he is out indefinitely.
Mar 27, 2021
Placed on 60-day IL
Schmidt (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt suffered an extensor strain in his right elbow in late February and has yet to resume throwing. While manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that Schmidt's return to throwing could be "imminent," the right-hander will miss extended time to begin the regular season while he builds back up.
Mar 26, 2021
Yet to resume throwing
Schmidt (elbow) is still experiencing discomfort and hasn't returned to throwing, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt is reportedly still not feeling 100 percent after being diagnosed with a common extensor strain in his right elbow, and the organization doesn't want him to begin a throwing program until he's completely asymptomatic. Manager Aaron Boone indicated Thursday that Schmidt's return to throwing could be "imminent," but a clearer picture of his timeframe has yet to be announced.
Mar 20, 2021
Still not throwing
Schmidt (elbow) has not yet resumed throwing but is "getting close," Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt has been out since late February after suffering an extensor strain in his right elbow. Though the injury is believed to be minor, the right-hander remains on the shelf and is no longer in the running for an Opening Day rotation spot. He has, however, reportedly been making progress and appears likely to start a throwing program soon.
Mar 16, 2021
Should begin throwing soon
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Schmidt (elbow) is close to resuming a throwing program, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt has apparently demonstrated some notable progress since the Yankees shut him down March 6 with a common extensor strain in his right elbow, so he looks like he could be cleared to begin playing catch off flat ground by the end of the week. Due to time he's already missed with the injury, however, Schmidt won't be in contention for an Opening Day rotation spot with the Yankees. Domingo German and Deivi Garcia are currently vying for the fifth starter's role.
Mar 6, 2021
Not yet ready to return
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that Schmidt (elbow) is at least a week away from throwing, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt has been dealing with a minor extensor strain in his elbow to begin spring training, and the Yankees have been bringing him up slowly as a result. Although the team hasn't expressed significant concern regarding his injury, the right-hander likely won't be available for the first few weeks of the regular season.
Feb 27, 2021
Injury considered minor
Schmidt's elbow injury is considered minor, and he hopes to return soon, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt has been shut down to begin spring training due to an extensor strain in his elbow, but he said Saturday that the injury is a minor one. It's not yet clear whether the right-hander will return in time to build up enough ahead of Opening Day, but he appears to have avoided a long-term issue.
Feb 22, 2021
Shut down with elbow issue
Schmidt will be shut down for a few weeks after suffering an extensor strain in his elbow, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The good news for Schmidt and the Yankees is that his UCL, which was repaired by Tommy John surgery back in 2017, appears to be fine. While that procedure seemingly won't be required here, it's still never good news to see a pitcher dealing with elbow troubles. Even in the best case scenario, Schmidt won't be able to start a proper spring buildup until mid-March, meaning he'll be unavailable for the first few weeks of the regular season. He was thought to have an outside shot at the Yankees' fifth starter job this spring, but the injury takes him out of the running for that role at least to start the year.
Feb 18, 2021
In running for rotation spot
Schmidt could be competing for a rotation spot during spring training, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Deivi Garcia is likely the favorite to land the fifth-starter role, manager Aaron Boone's indication Wednesday that he foresees a competition for the spot opens the door for Schmidt to challenge for the honor with a strong showing this spring. Schmidt allowed five earned runs over 6.1 innings in his first taste of the big leagues last season.
Sep 27, 2020
Charged with loss in first start
Schmidt (0-1) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four over four innings as he was charged with the loss Sunday against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt was making his first major-league start in Sunday's season finale, and he gave up three runs in the second frame while only lasting four innings overall. He was charged with the loss as the Marlins' pitching staff tossed a shutout in the contest. The highly-touted prospect had mixed results in his first three big-league appearances in 2020, and it's unclear whether he'll play a role for the Yankees during the postseason.
Sep 27, 2020
Recalled for first big-league start
Schmidt was recalled from the alternate training site to start Sunday's game against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old made his major-league debut with two appearances out of the bullpen in early September, but he'll make the first start of his career in the regular-season finale. Schmidt had a brief showing at Double-A Trenton last season and had a 2.37 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 19:1 K:BB over 19 innings. A strong performance Sunday would be a convincing audition for a roster spot in the playoffs.
Sep 26, 2020
Making first start Sunday
Schmidt will start Sunday's game against the Marlins, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt was believed to be a candidate to start Sunday's regular-season finale, and the team officially named him the starter. He'll make his first major-league start as he competes for a spot on the roster if the Yankees make a run in the playoffs. In his first two major-league appearances in 2020, Schmidt allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three over 2.1 innings.
Sep 24, 2020
Likely to start Sunday
Schmidt will likely be called up to start Sunday's game against the Marlins, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
This would essentially be an audition for Schmidt to make the roster for the Division Series, as he would not be available for the initial best-of-three series. He has not been used as a traditional starter in his two big-league appearances thus far this season, but Schmidt still has a very high ceiling and floor long term and could emerge as an unlikely weapon for the Yankees this October.

Sent down by Yankees
Schmidt was optioned to the Yankees' alternate training site Sunday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt made just two relief appearances during his time on the major-league roster. He had a rough showing in his debut but settled down in his second start. The right-hander hadn't pitched in nearly a week, so he'll presumably get more consistent time to develop at alternate camp. It's unclear whether the 24-year-old prospect will return to the Yankees' pitching staff over the final two weeks of the regular season.

Unsteady in big-league debut
Schmidt pitched 1.1 relief innings in the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Orioles, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out one. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt was called upon to protect a one-run lead with a pair of runners on base and two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Things did not go well for the rookie as he gave up three straight hits and allowed four runs to cross the plate -- two of which were charged to starter Deivi Garcia -- before recording the first out of his career. Schmidt returned to the mound in the sixth frame and fared better, holding Baltimore scoreless in spite of a walk and a hit batsman. It remains to be seen how the Yankees will deploy their top pitching prospect moving forward -- he was primarily a starter in the minors, coming out of the bullpen for only two of 27 appearances.

Joins 40-man roster ahead of Game 2
Schmidt's contract was selected by the Yankees prior to Game 2 against the Orioles on Friday, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt was on the taxi squad for the Yankees' weekend series, and he'll join the 40-man roster for Friday's nightcap. The 24-year-old logged a 2.37 ERA and 0.79 WHIP over 19 innings during three starts at the Double-A level last season and will now be available to make his major-league debut.

Joining taxi squad
Schmidt was added to the Yankees' taxi squad Friday and could have his contract purchased as soon as Saturday, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt has yet to reach Triple-A and has made just three starts at the Double-A level, but he's a talented pitcher who could make an impact for the Yankees down the stretch. The 24-year-old has thrown just 114 total professional innings, but his 3.39 ERA and 28.3 percent strikeout rate serve as good indicators of his potential.

Unlikely to debut this weekend
Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated Thursday that he "wouldn't expect" Schmidt to be called up this weekend despite the team playing five games in three days, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
If ever there was a time for the Yankees to summon their top pitching prospect this season it would appear to be now, with the team playing doubleheaders against the Mets on Friday and Sunday. However, Boone's comments suggest that the organization is committed to keeping Schmidt off the big-league roster, a decision likely centered around his lack of experience beyond the Double-A level and current absence from the 40-man roster. Assuming Schmidt or another starter isn't summoned from the team's alternate training site, New York is likely to rely upon a bullpen game for at least one half of both of this weekend's twin bills.

Callup complicated by roster space
According to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, Schmidt has been impressive at the team's alternate training site, but his current absence from the 40-man roster could impact the decision to call him up to the majors, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With James Paxton (forearm) and Luis Avilan (shoulder) placed on the injured list Friday, the Yankees have a sudden need for both a starting pitcher and a reliever to fill their spots. However, Boone mentioned Michael King, Nick Nelson and Jonathan Loaisiga as potential replacements for Paxton while suggesting that Schmidt's path could be complicated by a corresponding 40-man roster move that would need to be made if the prized prospect is called up. Schmidt has pitched only three games above Class A ball, but he has recently been getting stretched out to a starter's workload at the Yankees' alternate training site.

Could be called upon this season
According to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, Schmidt "could certainly factor in" to the Yankees' plans at some point this season, but he won't pitch this weekend, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Yankees starters not named Gerrit Cole have been mostly unimpressive this season, but the organization has thus far resisted the temptation to promote its top pitching prospect. Schmidt impressed in spring training and summer camp, so service-time considerations could be a factor in the team's decision to keep him off the active roster. Still, the right-hander could certainly make his major-league debut at some point during the campaign, especially if starters Jordan Montgomery, James Paxton and J.A. Happ continue to struggle.

Sent to alternate training site
Schmidt was sent to the Yankees' alternate training site Tuesday, Randy Miller of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
Schmidt received glowing reviews from the pitching staff during his camp, but he won't begin the season on the major-league roster. Manager Aaron Boone said, "He has delivered in every way," when describing Schmidt's performance during camp. Given the team's belief in his potential, the 24-year-old could make his major-league debut at some point during the abbreviated 2020 season.
