ANALYSIS
After going 5-for-13 at the plate over a stretch of four consecutive starts behind the plate, Wong will find himself on the bench Monday for the second day in a row. Reese McGuire will be rewarded with another start at catcher after going 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI in Sunday's 7-3 win over the Orioles, but Wong still looks to be the Red Sox's preferred backstop.

Aug 24, 2023
Homer, four hits in victory
Wong went 4-for-6 with a double, a two-run homer and three additional runs scored in Thursday's win over Houston.
ANALYSIS
Wong's been showing signs of coming around at the plate recently, going 7-for-18 (.389) with a pair of homers in his last five games after starting the month with a 6-for-32 (.188) slump. He's now up to seven home runs on the season after hitting just one since June 1, a span of 60 games. Overall, Wong's slashing .248/.299/.413 with 48 runs scored and 31 RBI across 322 plate appearances while splitting catching duties with Reese McGuire in Boston.
Aug 21, 2023
Hits bench in second straight
Wong is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Astros, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
On the bench for the third time in four games, Wong's status as the Red Sox's No. 1 catcher could be on shaky ground. Wong's downturn in playing time comes while he's turned in a .189/.231/.378 slash line through 15 games in August. Meanwhile, Reese McGuire owns a .739 OPS so far this month, and the Red Sox could be inclined to ride the hot bat of the two backstops if Wong's performance continues to lag behind.
Aug 20, 2023
Receives Sunday off
Wong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS

Aug 15, 2023
Out of Tuesday's lineup
Wong is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Nationals, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Wong has a .649 OPS and 33.8 percent strikeout rate in 71 at-bats since the All-Star break and will hit the bench Tuesday for the fourth time in Boston's past six games. Reese McGuire will receive another look behind the plate with Nick Pivetta on the mound.
Aug 12, 2023
Back on bench
Wong will sit for the third time in four games Saturday against the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Wong has started 77 of Boston's 117 games behind the plate this season, the eight-highest total in the league among catchers. His .244/.298/.389 slash line isn't particularly impressive, though Saturday's starter Reese McGuire owns a similar .267/.305/.367 line, which doesn't signal that the depth chart is about to flip.
Aug 9, 2023
Gets Wednesday off
Wong is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
He'll take a seat Wednesday while Reese McGuire gets the nod behind the plate, catching for starting pitcher Nick Pivetta. Wong started in both of the first two games of the series, going 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI.
Aug 6, 2023
Resting for series finale
Wong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Blue Jays, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Aug 1, 2023

Wong is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Wong will get a breather for the second game of the series after he caught all eight innings of Monday's 6-2 loss while going 1-for-4 with a double and a run. Reese McGuire (oblique) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday and will fill in for Wong behind the plate.
Jul 30, 2023
Resting Sunday
Wong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Wong will get a well-deserved breather after he started at catcher in each of Boston's previous five games. Jorge Alfaro will form a battery with starting pitcher Brennan Bernardino in Sunday's series finale.
Jul 24, 2023
Logs steal in win
Wong went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and run scored in Sunday's 6-1 win over the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Wong stole his second base in the last three games. The catcher is up to four steals on the season. In the minors, Wong showed some base stealing ability, posting 11 in 2019, seven in 2021 and seven more in 2022.
Jul 18, 2023
On bench Tuesday
Wong is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Wong went 3-for-4 with three RBI as the Red Sox earned a 7-0 shutout victory in Monday's series opener at Oakland, but it'll be Jorge Alfaro handling the catching duties in Tuesday night's tilt.
Jul 18, 2023
Drives in three in win
Wong went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored in Monday's 7-0 win over the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Wong has a pair of three-hit efforts in July, matching his total from the first three months of the season. He's hitting .343 (12-for-35) this month, though he also has a 1:14 BB:K over his last 12 contests. The catcher has a .242/.298/.411 slash line, six home runs, 23 RBI, 33 runs scored, two stolen bases and 19 doubles through 239 plate appearances overall. Wong should remain the Red Sox's primary catcher until Reese McGuire (oblique) returns.
Jul 9, 2023
Resting Sunday
Wong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Wong started behind the dish in each of Boston's last six games, so he'll be getting a well-deserved breather while the Red Sox finish off their first-half schedule Sunday. Jorge Alfaro will catch for starting pitcher Tayler Scott in the series finale with Oakland.
Jul 1, 2023
Gets Saturday off
Wong isn't in the Red Sox's lineup Saturday against Toronto, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Wong broke a four-game hitless streak Friday with a double, and he'll be rewarded with a day off Saturday. Caleb Hamilton will fill in behind the plate and bat ninth.
Jun 25, 2023
Day off Sunday
Wong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Wong started the past three games and will take a seat for the series finale in Chicago. Caleb Hamilton will step in behind the plate to catch for Kutter Crawford.
Jun 21, 2023
Resting Wednesday
Wong is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
After starting at catcher in both of first two games of the series with Minnesota and going 3-for-8 with a double, two walks, two runs and an RBI, Wong will take a seat Wednesday. He'll give way to Reese McGuire, who will form a battery with starting pitcher Garrett Whitlock.
Jun 18, 2023
Riding pine for nightcap
Wong isn't starting the second game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Yankees, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Wong went 1-for-4 with a double, a run, an RBI and two strikeouts during Sunday's matinee. However, Reese McGuire will take over at catcher and bat eighth during the nightcap.
Jun 13, 2023
Off Tuesday
Wong isn't starting Tuesday against the Rockies, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After going 2-for-4 with a run scored in Monday's contest, Wong will get a day off Tuesday. Reese McGuire will take over behind the plate and bat eighth.
Jun 2, 2023
Taking seat Friday
Wong is absent from the lineup for Friday's game versus the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Wong extended his hitting streak to eight games in style Thursday against the Reds with a two-run homer, but he'll begin this one on the bench. Reese McGuire will catch Garrett Whitlock.
Jun 2, 2023
Homers late in win
Wong went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Thursday in an 8-2 victory versus Cincinnati.
ANALYSIS
Wong essentially put the game away for the Red Sox in the eighth inning, swatting a two-run shot to left-center field. The blast extended his modest hitting streak to eight games, during which he is slashing .310/.333/.690 with two homers, five doubles and four RBI. Wong's strong hitting appears to have cemented his place ahead of Reese McGuire on the catcher depth chart -- since May 24, Wong has started five games to McGuire's two.
May 27, 2023
Day off Saturday
Wong is not in the starting lineup Saturday against Arizona, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Wong will get a breather after he went 3-for-7 with a homer, two doubles, two RBI and four runs scored while starting the last two games. Reese McGuire will draw the start at catcher and bat ninth versus the Diamondbacks.
May 25, 2023
Goes deep
Wong went 1-for-3 with a homer and two runs scored in Wednesday's 7-3 loss to the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Wong smacked a 420-foot homer to center field to round the bases for the fifth time this season. He has produced a powerful May with a .565 slugging percentage. For the season Wong has a .738 OPS as he has produced in his first chance with regular playing time. But he will likely continue to split time with Reese McGuire, as they both have at least 70 plate appearances this season.
May 21, 2023
Gets breather Sunday
Wong is out of the starting lineup for Sunday's finale against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Wong will grab a seat on the bench after going 1-for-4 in each of the first two games against San Diego. Reese McGuire will handle backstop duties while hitting ninth.
May 14, 2023
Steps out of lineup
Wong is not in the lineup for Sunday's game versus the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Wong is mired in a 1-for-17 slump and will head to the bench after starting the previous three games. Reese McGuire will take over at catcher and bat eighth in Sunday's series finale.
May 13, 2023
Homers in loss
Wong went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 8-6 loss to the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Wong hit the second of back-to-back blasts along with Enmanuel Valdez in the fifth inning of a back-and-forth game. It was the fourth home run in 81 at-bats for the catcher, who achieved double-digit homers in three of four full seasons in the minors. The season began with Wong as the backup to Reese McGuire, but the roles have since shifted. Wong's started 24 games compared to 15 for McGuire.
May 9, 2023
Sitting out Tuesday
Wong is not in the Red Sox' lineup for Tuesday's game in Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
It's a routine day off for Wong. Reese McGuire will do the catching and bat ninth against Charlie Morton.
May 3, 2023
Powers win with two homers
Wong went 4-for-4 with a double and two solo home runs in Tuesday's 7-6 win over the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old backstop continued his ascent into the starting role for Boston as he reeled off his third straight multi-hit performance. Wong provided both the tying and winning runs in the comeback victory with his first career multi-homer game, and through 69 plate appearances in 2023 he's slashing .290/.353/.516 with five doubles, three homers, 10 RBI and 11 runs, and all three of his homers have come in his last two starts. With Reese McGuire's struggles against the running game limiting his playing time despite a respectable .761 OPS, Wong's fantasy value is soaring.
May 1, 2023
Gives way to McGuire on Monday
Wong is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jays, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After catching in both of the Red Sox's past two games, Wong will get a breather for the series opener. Reese McGuire will form a battery with starting pitcher Corey Kluber on Monday.
May 1, 2023
Hits first homer in win
Wong went 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's win over the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Wong led off the fifth inning with a base hit, eventually coming around to score on Alex Verdugo's base hit to open the scoring. Wong would later extend Boston's lead to 4-1 with a two-run, 427-foot homer, his first of the season, in the sixth inning off Nick Sandlin. The 27-year-old Wong has gone 5-for-8 in his last two games against Cleveland. He's now slashing .241/.313/.362 with eight RBI, nine runs scored and a stolen base through his first 65 plate appearances this season while splitting catching duties with Reese McGuire.
Apr 28, 2023
Sitting Friday
Wong will sit Friday against the Guardians, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Wong will get a breather after he went 1-for-3 with two walks, a run scored and three strikeouts over two starts during the three-game series with the Orioles. Reese McGuire will take over behind the plate and bat eighth in the series opener with Cleveland.
Apr 25, 2023
Takes seat Tuesday
Wong is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Orioles, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
With Reese McGuire (hand) cleared to start Tuesday, Wong will get a breather after starting behind the plate each of the past three days. Wong still looks like Boston's nominal No. 1 catcher, though his pedestrian .549 OPS could soon cost him playing time while McGuire (.850 OPS) has soundly outperformed him at the dish.
Apr 19, 2023
On bench Wednesday
Wong is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Twins, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Reese McGuire's inability to control the running game early on in the season has allowed Wong to emerge as Boston's No. 1 catcher, but the latter's job security may be starting to loosen. In his last start behind the dish in Monday's loss to the Angels, McGuire threw out the lone would-be base stealer on the day (Shohei Ohtani), and the backstop also went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run. McGuire enters Wednesday with a 372-point edge over Wong in OPS for the season, and the upgrade McGuire offers with the bat may be enough for him to eventually usurp Wong atop the depth chart.
Apr 17, 2023
Resting Monday
Wong is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Angels, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Given that the Red Sox are closing out their four-game series with the Angels with a day game along with the fact that he started behind the dish in each of the previous three days, Wong's absence from the lineup Monday comes as little surprise. Reese McGuire will form a battery with starting pitcher Brayan Bello (forearm) in the latter's return from the 15-day injured list.
Apr 12, 2023
Receives breather Wednesday
Wong is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Wong is getting some maintenance after he caught each of Boston's last four games while going 2-for-13 with a double, a walk, two runs and two RBI. Reese McGuire is catching for starting pitcher Chris Sale on Wednesday.
Apr 9, 2023
Getting more time over McGuire
Wong will start at catcher and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Tigers, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Though he appeared to be in the short side of a platoon at catcher with the lefty-hitting Reese McGuire to begin the season, Wong seems to have at least temporarily emerged as the Red Sox's preferred backstop against both right- and left-handed pitching. Wong will be starting again with the Tigers bringing a lefty (Matthew Boyd) to the hill for the second straight day, but the 26-year-old catcher also started over McGuire on two of the last four occasions Boston opposed right-handed pitchers. Wong is hitting just .125/.176/.188 through 17 plate appearances, but he seems to be earning extra time on the basis of McGuire's inability to control the run game. Despite logging only 36 innings behind the dish this season, McGuire has allowed a league-leading 14 stolen bases and hasn't thrown out a would-be base stealer.
Mar 27, 2023
Secures backup catcher role
Wong clinched a spot on the Red Sox's Opening Day roster after the team reassigned Jorge Alfaro to minor-league camp Monday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Though he missed much of the Red Sox's Grapefruit League slate while managing a left hamstring injury, Wong drew back into the spring lineup Monday versus Atlanta and appears to be back to full health as Opening Day approaches. Despite Wong's lack of at-bats and innings behind the dish this spring, manager Alex Cora said he felt comfortable enough with the 26-year-old to keep him on hand as the understudy to Reese McGuire. Since McGuire bats from the left side of the plate, the righty-hitting Wong could end up filling the short side of a platoon at catcher.
Mar 27, 2023
Back in Grapefruit League lineup
Wong will start at catcher and bat ninth in Monday's Grapefruit League game versus Atlanta, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
After being sidelined for much of camp with a left hamstring strain, Wong was able to catch in a minor-league game over the weekend and is now set to enter the Grapefruit League lineup for the first time since March 2. Wong is competing with non-roster invitee Jorge Alfaro for the No. 2 catcher spot on the Opening Day roster behind projected No. 1 option Reese McGuire.
Mar 25, 2023
Will catch Saturday
Wong (hamstring) is scheduled to catch seven innings in a minor-league game Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Wong has been getting at-bats as a rover in several minor-league games all week. Saturday's activity will be his return to the catching. He remains a possibility to make the Opening Day roster, but Wong would need to win out over non-roster invitee Jorge Alfaro to break camp as the backup catcher to Reese McGuire.
Mar 22, 2023
Will return to action Thursday
Wong (hamstring) will be "full go" Thursday, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wong has missed most of March with a left hamstring strain but appears to have put the injury behind him. He is competing with Jorge Alfaro for the backup catcher job behind Reese McGuire.
Mar 21, 2023
Might be ready for Opening Day
Wong (hamstring) has a chance to be part of the Red Sox' Opening Day roster, manager Alex Cora told Ian Browne of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Wong has been out nearly all month with a left hamstring strain. He could return to action this week, though, and it would appear he has a shot to avoid an injured list stint. With Jorge Alfaro appearing likely to make the club along with Reese McGuire, it's possible the Red Sox will carry three catchers.
Mar 15, 2023
Could play next week
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Wong (hamstring) could return to the Grapefruit League lineup next week, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Wong looks to be nearly recovered from the left hamstring strain he suffered March 2, as he's been able to do some catching in addition to taking part in batting practice in recent days. The 26-year-old may have to prove that the hamstring injury isn't hindering him on the basepaths before he's formally cleared for game action, but for the time being, he looks as though he'll avoid a stint on the injured list to open the season. However, because of the extensive time he missed during camp, Wong may be on the outside looking in for a spot on Boston's Opening Day roster and could be optioned to Triple-A Worcester to begin the campaign.
Mar 13, 2023
Catches side session
Wong (hamstring) caught Corey Kluber's bullpen session Monday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox haven't indicated when Wong will be ready to return to the team's Grapefruit League lineup, but the fact that he's now taken batting practice and resumed catching suggests that he may be nearly recovered from the Grade 1 left hamstring strain he sustained March 2. Once cleared to play in games, Wong will likely require only a handful of at-bats to get himself ready for Opening Day, so he still has a chance at breaking camp as Boston's No. 2 catcher.
Mar 8, 2023
Resumes hitting
Wong (hamstring) was cleared to resume hitting Wednesday, Mike Monaco of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Wong is dealing with a Grade 1 left hamstring strain, but the backstop has been able to participate in agility drills and now is able to swing the bat as he looks to make his way back. The backstop has a chance to be ready for Opening Day, but it's far from a foregone conclusion at this point.
Mar 6, 2023
Goes through drills
Wong (hamstring) was able to go through some agility drills Sunday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wong has also been doing some running in the pool. While he might be a tad ahead of schedule in his recovery from a Grade 1 left hamstring strain, Wong's availability for Opening Day remains very much up in the air.
Mar 3, 2023
Has Grade 1 hamstring strain
Wong has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 left hamstring strain, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
It's the least severe strain he could have suffered, which is obviously good news. There's no timetable for Wong's return, however, and at this point on the calendar there would seem to be a pretty good chance he'll need an injured list stint. Non-roster invitee Jorge Alfaro seems like a lock for the roster now, if he wasn't already.
Mar 2, 2023
Suffers hamstring injury
Wong had to exit Thursday's Grapefruit League game versus the Phillies with a left hamstring injury, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said after the game of Wong's injury that "it doesn't look great right now but hopefully we get better news tomorrow morning." It sounds like this could lead to an injured list stint for Wong, which would officially open the door for non-roster invitee Jorge Alfaro to make the team as Reese McGuire's backup.
Oct 5, 2022
Hits bench in finale
Wong is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After starting three of Boston's last four games, Wong will take a seat as the Red Sox wrap up their season Wednesday. The 26-year-old produced a .572 OPS in 55 plate appearances in the big leagues in 2022 and could get the chance to compete for a No. 2 role at catcher next spring.
Sep 26, 2022
Losing work to McGuire
Wong is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Orioles, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Wong will take a seat for the third time in four games and may be the Red Sox's No. 2 catcher behind Reese McGuire at this point. Upon joining Boston as a Sept. 1 call-up from Triple-A Worcester, Wong went 3-for-12 with two extra-base hits and three walks in his first six games with Boston, but he's since slashed .200/.200/.267 with a 62.5 percent strikeout rate over his subsequent 10 contests.
Sep 24, 2022
Still on bench
Wong isn't starting Saturday against the Yankees, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Wong has split playing time behind the dish recently and will head to the bench for a second consecutive matchup. Reese McGuire is starting at catcher and batting eighth.
Sep 23, 2022
Sitting Friday
Wong will sit Friday versus the Yankees, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wong will take a seat after he went 1-for-2 with a strikeout in Thursday's series opener. Reese McGuire will replace him behind the plate and bat eighth against New York.
Sep 21, 2022
Heads to bench Wednesday
Wong is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Wong should have a clearer path to the Red Sox's No. 1 catcher role after the team recently dropped Kevin Plawecki from the 40-man roster, but Wong will give way to Reese McGuire behind the plate for the series finale in Cincinnati. Since receiving a call-up from Triple-A Worcester on Sept. 1, Wong has hit .217 with a home run, five runs and four RBI in 12 games.
Sep 16, 2022
Takes seat Friday
Wong isn't starting Friday against the Royals, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Wong has seen a slight uptick in playing time in early September, but he'll be out of the lineup for the third time in the last five games. Kevin Plawecki is starting behind the plate and batting ninth.
Sep 11, 2022
Emerging as primary backstop
Wong will start at catcher and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Orioles, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
Wong will start for the third time in four games and appears to have temporarily emerged as the top option in Boston's three-headed timeshare at catcher that also includes Reese McGuire and Kevin Plawecki. Since getting a call-up to Boston on Sept. 1, Wong has gone 3-for-12 with a home run, a double and three walks in six contests.
Sep 3, 2022
Mashes first MLB homer
Wong went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's 9-1 win over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Wong, who was in the starting lineup after being called up when rosters expanded, crushed a 439-foot homer off Texas left-hander A.J. Alexy. He was red hot at Triple-A Worcester prior to joining the Red Sox, having hit .368/.411/.838 with nine home runs and 22 RBI over 16 games in August. Boston manager Alex Cora told Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com that he'll find ways to get Wong at-bats while he's swinging the bat well, noting he can also play the infield. At 5-foot-11, 181 pounds, Wong doesn't look the part of a power hitter, but he has what baseball people like to describe as sneaky pop. He has an opportunity over the final month of the season. Boston's catching position for 2023 is in flux with Christian Vazquez traded and Kevin Plawecki due to be a free agent. Wong and Reese McGuire could make up the catching tandem next season.
Sep 1, 2022
Receives promotion Thursday
The Red Sox recalled Wong from Triple-A Worcester on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Wong becomes the Red Sox's third catcher on the 28-man active roster, joining Reese McGuire and Kevin Plawecki. With neither backstop having established himself as Boston's clear No. 1 catcher, it wouldn't be surprising if Wong received an extended look while the team remains out of contention for a playoff spot. Wong produced an .832 OPS over his 355 plate appearances at Worcester.

Optioned to Triple-A
Wong was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Friday.
ANALYSIS
With Kevin Plawecki back from the COVID-19 injured list, Boston no longer needed Wong as insurance behind the plate. He has accrued only nine plate appearances in Boston this season, collecting two hits. Yolmer Sanchez was recalled to take Wong's spot on the roster.

Back in big leagues
Wong was recalled by the Red Sox on Saturday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
It's been a busy week for Wong, who was recalled Monday, sent down Wednesday and now recalled again Saturday. His latest stint on the big-league roster comes as Trevor Story hits the injured list with a bruised right hand. As a catcher, however, Wong isn't a direct replacement for Story, and he could have a tough time finding much playing time with both Christian Vazquez and Kevin Plawecki on the roster.

Sent down Monday
Wong was optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Wong appeared in two games during his time with the major-league club, and he went 1-for-6 with an RBI and a strikeout. Kevin Plawecki will serve as the primary backup behind the dish after he was activated from the COVID-19 injured list.
Apr 20, 2022
Handles staff, drives in run
Wong went 0-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and an RBI in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Wong, who stepped in as the starting catcher after both Christian Vazquez and Kevin Plawecki were added to the COVID-19 injury list, produced the game-winning run his a seventh-inning sac-fly. He has familiarity with the staff, catching during spring training games and bullpen sessions, so Red Sox manager Alex Cora was confident in the young backstop. All three of his starts in 2021 were for Nathan Eovladi, who was Tuesday's starter, so there was familiarity among the battery. Wong also guided four relievers through 4.1 scoreless innings against a potent Toronto lineup. He'll remain the primary catcher until Vazquez and/or Plawecki can return to the club.
Apr 19, 2022
Steps into starting role
Wong will start at catcher and bat ninth in Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
After being called up just a couple hours prior to Monday's Patriots' Day loss to the Twins, Wong suddenly finds himself atop the depth chart at catcher. Christian Vazquez (illness) joined Kevin Plawecki (illness) on the COVID-19-related injured list Tuesday, leaving Wong in line to start at catcher for at least the next two days, according to Steve Hewitt of the Boston Herald. Ronaldo Hernandez, who was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, will likely replace Wong behind the plate in Thursday's series finale, which is a day game after a night game.

Joining big club Monday
The Red Sox will call up Wong from Triple-A Worcester prior to Monday's game against the Twins, Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Wong will join the 28-man active roster as a replacement for backup catcher Kevin Plawecki, who was sent home from Fenway Park after testing positive for COVID-19. With the Red Sox's annual Patriots' Day game beginning at 11:10 a.m. ET, Wong may not arrive in Boston in time for first pitch, but he should be available off the bench behind starting catcher Christian Vazquez. Whenever Plawecki clears the necessary protocols and is ready to return from the COVID-19 injured list, Wong will likely head back to Worcester.

Wong isn't on Boston's ALDS roster, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.

Oct 5, 2021
On wild-card roster
Wong made the Red Sox's wild-card roster, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox elected to go with three catchers rather than carry a 13th pitcher or an additional option elsewhere on the field. Wong's addition allows the team to get both Kevin Plawecki and Christian Vazquez into the game if necessary while still having cover behind the plate in the event of an injury, but it's unlikely he sees the field if everyone stays healthy.
Sep 4, 2021
Optioned down
Wong was optioned to Triple-A Worcester following Friday night's game against Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox continue to shuffle the roster with several players on the COVID-19 IL. They swapped out Wong for Taylor Motter, who can cover more spots amidst the ongoing absences. Christian Vazquez and Kevin Plawecki will be left as the only catchers on the depth chart, though chances are Wong rejoins them later this month.

Recalled by Boston
Wong was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Bill Koch of The Providence Journal reports.
ANALYSIS

ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old was sent to Triple-A on Saturday but will quickly rejoin the Red Sox with Josh Taylor (undisclosed) being placed on the COVID-19 IL. Christian Vazquez and Kevin Plawecki remain healthy, so Wong is unlikely to see much action during this stint in the majors.

Jun 27, 2021
Records first MLB hit
Wong went 1-for-3 in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Wong made his first start in the majors and singled in his first at-bat, going the other way with 3-2 a pitch on the outside of the zone. More impressively, Wong guided Nathan Eovaldi through 7.2 dominant innings. The two are from the Houston area and worked out together during the COVID-19 shutdown in 2020, so there was some familiarity.
Jun 23, 2021
Scores as pinch runner
Wong entered the game as the runner on second base to start the 11th inning and scored the game-winning run in Tuesday's 9-5 win over Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS

Overcomes hamstring injury
Wong has gone 1-for-11 with a double and an RBI in his three games at Triple-A Worcester since returning from a three-week absence due to a hamstring injury.
ANALYSIS
Worcester never placed Wong on the 7-day injured list, even though his recovery from the hamstring issue lingered longer than anticipated. The 25-year-old backstop maintains a .408 OPS on the season while striking out in 32 percent of his plate appearances.
May 11, 2021
Nursing hamstring injury
Wong will be sidelined for a few days by a hamstring injury, Joe McDonald of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old suffered the injury during Tuesday's contest and will be held out for at least a couple days. It doesn't appear to be a serious issue, so Wong should be able to avoid the injured list.
