Schneider is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Yankees.

Schneider is without a hit in his past 30 at-bats and finds himself on the bench Tuesday for the fourth time in Toronto's past six games. The 24-year-old had one of the hottest bats in the majors after debuting in early August with seven homers and a 1.415 OPS in his first 21 contests, but his regression over the last couple weeks has been steep. Cavan Biggio has taken on a larger role of late and is batting cleanup as Toronto's second baseman Tuesday.

Schneider is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays.

Schneider worked as Toronto's primary second baseman for the first half of September, but he's 0-for-30 over his past eight contests and will sit Sunday for the third time in five games. Whit Merrifield will start at second base and bat eighth in the series finale at Tampa Bay.

Schneider isn't starting Friday against the Rays.

Schneider is 0-for-26 with 11 strikeouts across his last seven games, so he'll get a day off to regroup Friday. Santiago Espinal will start at second base in Schneider's place and bat ninth.

The rookie has garnered 15 starts in the Blue Jays' last 16 games amid a torrid stretch dating back to Aug. 26. In 51 at-bats since then, he has hit .373 with nine doubles, five homers, 16 runs and 14 RBI.

The 24-year-old rookie has only moderately cooled down from his red-hot start to his big-league career with the calendar flipping in September. While starting at second base, third base or designated hitter in eight of the Blue Jays' first nine games of the month, Schneider is slashing .269/.486/.654 with six extra-base hits (one home run, one triple, five doubles), seven runs, five RBI and 10:12 BB:K. He should have a clear path to a near-everyday role while Matt Chapman (finger) is on the injured list, and even once Chapman returns, Schneider may have played well enough to keep getting regular playing time in a super-utility role.

Schneider went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBI in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the Nationals.

Schneider has started four straight games -- two at second base and one each at third base and left field -- as the Jays try to cover for the absences of Bo Bichette (quad) and Matt Chapman (finger), and he's racked up eight RBI, five runs and eight hits with six of them (three doubles and three homers) going for extra bases. Schneider's also hit fifth or higher in all four games, as manager John Schneider (no relation) rides the hot hand to try and spark an underachieving Toronto offense.

The 24-year-old infielder seems to be settling into a short-side platoon role for Toronto, which limits his fantasy utility, but he's remained productive when he gets into the lineup -- through his first 40 big-league plate appearances, he's batting .424 (14-for-33) with four homers and nine RBI.

Schneider was a popular waiver-wire pickup after he opened his big-league career with nine hits -- including two home runs -- in his first three games, but he's gone 1-for-12 with seven strikeouts over his subsequent four contests and no longer looks to be in store for steady playing time. He'll be on the bench for a third straight game Wednesday.

After forcing his way to the big leagues by hitting 21 homers with a .416 OBP in AAA, Schneider has begun his big-league career on a tear. The former 28th-round pick was moved up to third in the batting order in place of a resting Vladimir Guererro and delivered with four hits including his second home run. Schneider now has nine hits in his first 13 career at-bats for the Blue Jays to go along with those two homers and five RBI. While that pace is obviously unsustainable, the Blue Jays will find a way to consistently include him in their lineup provided he continues to produce.

After homering Friday in his first big-league at-bat, Schneider made his second straight start at second base and was productive once again. Kevin Kiermaier has been on the bench for both those games, with Daulton Varsho shifting to center field and Whit Merrifield moving out to left, and if Schneider keeps raking, manager John Schneider (no relation) could have some tough lineup decisions to make.

Called up from Triple-A Buffalo earlier in the day, Schneider got the start at second base and hit seventh in his debut and wasted no time making an impact, driving the third pitch he saw in the big leagues -- an 83.8 mph cutter from James Paxton -- deep over the Green Monster in the second inning. Schneider's numbers at Buffalo were impressive, and if he keeps hitting he could work his way into a short-side platoon role for the Jays, taking over at the keystone while Whit Merrifield spells one of the team's lefty-swinging outfielders. Santiago Espinal can also handle that role, but his .599 OPS on the season doesn't present a tough hurdle for Schneider to clear.

Whit Merrifield is in left field against southpaw James Paxton, bumping Daulton Varsho to center while Kevin Kiermaier joins Santiago Espinal and Cavan Biggio on the bench. Schneider might have to get off to a hot start in order to carve out even a platoon role with the Blue Jays, but he does at least seem capable of doing that. The 24-year-old had posted a .969 OPS with 21 home runs and 64 RBI through 87 games this season for Triple-A Buffalo.
