The Rays will place Enns on waivers Wednesday with the aim of granting him his unconditional release to pursue playing opportunities in Asia, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Enns will have to clear waivers before he's officially granted his release Friday, but the expectation is that he'll go unclaimed since he seemingly already has an agreement in place with a team in Korea, Japan or Taiwan. The 30-year-old lefty likely would have been worthy of a spot on the 40-man roster with the Rays or another organization after submitting a 2.82 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 25:6 K:BB across 22.1 innings with Tampa Bay this past season, but since he isn't arbitration eligible until 2024, Enns will be able to secure a more lucrative contract by heading overseas.

He logged a 0.67 ERA, 0.60 WHIP, two wins and two saves in 13.1 innings across five September appearances, but after pitching two innings Friday, the Rays will summon a fresh arm (Josh Fleming) in his place.

Enns struck out the only batter he faced to record his second save of the year Monday in a 6-4 win over the Blue Jays.

The Rays still don't have an outright closer, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Enns get at least another save before the regular season ends.

Enns (2-0) got the win in Thursday's 5-2 victory over Detroit, allowing one run on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts in four innings.

Manager Kevin Cash tabbed Enns to follow opener Louis Head and the 30-year-old delivered the quality performance Tampa Bay was banking on. The only run he surrendered came on a Niko Goodrum solo shot in the fifth, while two Tigers were picked off the bases while the lefty was on the hill. Enns has now permitted just one run in 11 September innings across three appearances while striking out 12 batters.

Enns attended spring training with the Mariners, but he became a free agent in May after Seattle released him and several other minor-league players. He spent the 2019 season in the Padres organization, starting in 25 of his 28 appearances for San Diego's Triple-A affiliate at El Paso, with whom he posted a 6.70 ERA and 1.74 WHIP over 137 innings. Enns will report to the Rays' alternate training site in Port Charlotte.
