Recovered from heel injury
Alvarez (heel) felt better Monday and the Mets are unconcerned about the catcher's health going into the offseason, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez had to exit Sunday's regular-season finale after taking a ball off his heel, but it appears that it will be a non-issue heading into the winter. Although he faded after the All-Star break, Alvarez still finished with 25 home runs in his rookie season, which ranked second only to Cal Raleigh among catchers.

Goes yard twice in nightcap
Alvarez went 2-for-3 with a walk, two home runs, a third run scored and six RBI in an 11-4 win over the Phillies during the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
ANALYSIS
It was a big day for Mets catchers, as Omar Narvaez launched his second homer of the season in the matinee, but Alvarez was the star of the show in the nightcap. The 21-year-old slugged both his long balls off Michael Plassmeyer -- a two-run shot in the second inning and a grand slam in the third, the first of his young career. Alvarez is up to 25 homers in 122 games in his first full big-league season, and his .211/.285/.439 slash line figures to improve as he matures given his 77th percentile barrel rate and 91st percentile max exit velocity in 2023.

Gets afternoon off
Alvarez will sit for the first half of Saturday's doubleheader against the Phillies, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez won't be asked to start twice in one day but could still get one or two more starts in before the end of the year. After hitting .238/.295/.514 in the first half, he's merely managed a .168/.263/.305 line since the break, though his overall 93 wRC+ and 23 homers makes for a more than adequate performance from a 21-year-old catcher. Omar Narvaez will crouch behind the plate Saturday afternoon.
Sep 27, 2023
Not starting in nightcap
Alvarez isn't in the Mets' lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Marlins, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts during Game 1, Alvarez's hitless streak extended to seven games. Omar Narvaez will fill in behind the plate and bat ninth.
Sep 26, 2023
Starting at catcher Tuesday
Alvarez (finger) is starting at catcher and batting seventh Tuesday versus Miami.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez made an early exit from Sunday's series finale at Philadelphia because of a bruised finger on his left hand, but it was never a serious concern. He's gone hitless over his last six games and will try to snap that streak Tuesday against the Marlins and left-hander Braxton Garrett.
Sep 25, 2023
Dealing with bruised finger
Mets manager Buck Showalter said after Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Phillies that Alvarez is dealing with a finger contusion after being hit on the left hand by two foul tips, Dan Gelston of the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The injury doesn't sound like anything that will result in Alvarez being shut down for the final week of the season, but it could provide further reason to continue to limit the young backstop's workload. Alvarez had already been splitting reps behind the plate with Omar Narvaez throughout September, so Showalter could lean more heavily on Narvaez as the team's No. 1 catcher for the final six contests. After going 0-for-2 prior to his departure Sunday, Alvarez is now hitless in 13 at-bats over his last six games, dropping his season-long batting average to .211.
Sep 24, 2023
Exits after being hit by foul tip
Alvarez (hand) left Sunday's contest versus the Phillies in the bottom of the sixth inning, Tim Healey of Newsday Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez took two foul tips off of his left hand and he was forced to leave the game. Omar Narvaez replaced him behind the plate and more information on Alvarez's status will likely come following Sunday's contest.
Sep 23, 2023
Remains on bench
Alvarez will sit for the second straight game Saturday against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
One would expect a 71-83 team to maximize at-bats for its 21-year-old catcher of the future down the stretch, but it's instead been 31-year-old impending free agent to start three of the last four games behind the plate. Perhaps the Mets simply don't want to tax Alvarez's knees too much at the end of a long season. The rookie's .213/.286/.433 season slash line is good for a 97 wRC+, a perfectly acceptable mark for a catcher, but he's managed just a .171/.269/.291 line (60 wRC+) since the start of August, which suggests he could use a break.
Sep 22, 2023
Not in lineup Friday
Alvarez is out of the lineup Friday versus the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez has been sharing starts this week with Omar Narvaez, who is behind the plate and batting ninth for the Mets on Friday at Philadelphia. Alvarez went 0-for-3 with an RBI sac fly in Thursday's series-opening loss.
Sep 20, 2023
Takes seat Wednesday
Alvarez is not in the lineup Wednesday at Miami.
ANALYSIS
Omar Narvaez will catch and bat ninth. Alvarez went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in the Mets' loss to the Marlins on Tuesday, but the 21-year-old backstop holds an .818 OPS with two homers, four doubles and nine RBI in 13 games since the calendar flipped to September.
Sep 18, 2023
Sitting Monday
Alvarez is out of the lineup for Monday's game in Miami.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez appears to be receiving a routine day off after he started behind the dish in the final two games of the Mets' weekend series with the Reds while going 3-for-10 with two doubles and three RBI. Omar Narvaez will get the starting nod at catcher Monday.
Sep 15, 2023
Day off Friday
Alvarez isn't in the Mets' lineup Friday against Cincinnati, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez will get a day off Friday despite collecting a hit in each of his last three games -- including a home run Tuesday. Omar Narvaez will start behind the plate and bat ninth while Alvarez sits.
Sep 13, 2023
Not in lineup Wednesday
Alvarez is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Omar Narvaez will start at catcher and bat ninth. Alvarez recorded his 23rd home run and second stolen base of the year in the Mets' defeat of the D-backs on Tuesday.
Sep 13, 2023
Flashes skills in Tuesday's win
Alvarez went 1-for-3 with a walk, a solo home run and a stolen base in Tuesday's 7-4 win over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
The 21-year-old backstop took Scott McGough deep in the eighth for his 23rd homer of the season, a couple innings after he'd swiped his second bag of the year. Alvarez has looked fatigued down the stretch and is slashing just .164/.303/.291 over his last 20 games, but he remains a key part of the Mets' youth movement heading into 2024.
Sep 12, 2023
Back in lineup Tuesday
Alvarez (hand) is back in the lineup Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez sat out of Monday's series opener after taking a pitch off his right hand Sunday in Minnesota, but X-rays turned up clean and he's good to go for Tuesday's tilt at Citi Field. The 21-year-old will start at catcher and bat ninth versus the Diamondbacks and right-hander Ryne Nelson.
Sep 11, 2023
Not in Monday's lineup
Alvarez (hand) is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Diamondbacks, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez had to be removed from Sunday's win over the Twins after being hit on the hand by a pitch. X-rays came back negative and he's considered day-to-day, but the young catcher will miss at least one start. Omar Narvaez is behind the dish Monday.
Sep 10, 2023
Managing hand issue
Alvarez underwent an X-ray on his hand that came back negative following Sunday's win over the Twins, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez was removed from Sunday's matchup in the bottom of the seventh inning after going 1-for-1 while also being hit by a pitch. He's dealing with a hand injury but doesn't appear to be dealing with structural damage. The 21-year-old should tentatively be considered day-to-day ahead of Monday's series opener against the Diamondbacks.
Sep 9, 2023
Sitting Saturday
Alvarez isn't in the Mets' lineup Saturday against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez will take a seat Saturday after going 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Friday's series opener. Omar Narvaez will take over behind the plate and bat ninth.
Sep 6, 2023
Takes seat Wednesday
Alvarez is absent from the lineup Wednesday at Washington.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez went 2-for-3 with a homer, a double, three RBI and three runs scored in the Mets' defeat of the Nationals on Tuesday, but Omar Narvaez will handle the catching duties for New York in Wednesday's series finale.
Sep 6, 2023
Leads charge in big win
Alvarez went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, a three-run home run, two additional runs scored and a stolen base in Tuesday's 11-5 win over the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
The rookie catcher kicked the Mets' offensive eruption into high gear in the first inning, crushing a Patrick Corbin fastball deep to left-center field. Alvarez's homer was his 22nd of the season while the steal was his first, but he also committed his 11th fielding error in 105 games. The 21-year-old's bat figures to play anywhere, so it'll be Alvarez's defense that determines whether he sticks behind the plate in the long term.
Sep 2, 2023
Not starting Saturday
Alvarez isn't in the Mets' lineup Saturday against Seattle.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez will get a breather after going 2-for-13 with an RBI across his last five games. Omar Narvaez will take his place behind the dish and bat eighth.
Aug 30, 2023
Absent from lineup again
Alvarez is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez has now started just two of the last five games and five of the last 10 contests. The young catcher might be tiring, as he comes into action Wednesday with a .459 OPS in August. Omar Narvaez will do the catching for Denyi Reyes.
Aug 28, 2023
Sitting out series opener
Alvarez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez will sit for the second time in three days while the Mets remain conscious of managing the 22-year-old's catching workload as the season winds down. Omar Narvaez will get another turn behind the plate and could end up working in a roughly even timeshare with Alvarez in the final month of the campaign.
Aug 26, 2023
Takes seat Saturday
Alvarez isn't in the Mets' lineup Saturday against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez is 0-for-10 with five strikeouts across his last three starts, so he'll take a game off to regroup Saturday. Omar Narvaez will fill in behind the plate and bat seventh.
Aug 21, 2023
Sitting for second straight
Alvarez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against Atlanta, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez is on the bench for the second game in a row, but the Mets haven't suggested that the young backstop is dealing with an injury. Instead, Alvarez's consecutive absences are likely part of a predetermined management plan, as manager Buck Showalter acknowledged over the weekend that the Mets intend to keep a close eye on the 21-year-old's workload heading into the final month of the season, per James O'Connell of the New York Daily News. Alvarez is still expected to remain the Mets' nominal No. 1 catcher down the stretch, though veteran Omar Narvaez could end up cracking the lineup more frequently than he has been for most of the season.
Aug 20, 2023
Receives breather Sunday
Alvarez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez was behind the plate for New York's previous three games and will take a seat for the series finale in St. Louis. Omar Narvaez will catch for Carlos Carrasco and bat seventh Sunday.
Aug 16, 2023
Gets breather Wednesday
Alvarez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez appears to be receiving some routine maintenance while the Mets and Pirates conclude their series with a day game after a night game. Omar Narvaez will check in behind the dish in place of Alvarez, whose production has slowed down thus far in August with one home run and a .184 average on the month.
Aug 13, 2023
Resting Sunday
Alvarez isn't in the Mets' lineup Sunday against Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez is 1-for-8 with a double during New York's current series against Atlanta, and he'll take a seat for Sunday's finale. Omar Narvaez will take over behind the plate and bat sixth.
Aug 12, 2023
Sitting Game 1
Alvarez isn't in the Mets' lineup for Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against Atlanta.

Aug 8, 2023

Aug 6, 2023
Receives Sunday off
Alvarez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez started the first two games of the series in Baltimore but will take a seat for the finale after going 0-for-6 with a walk. Omar Narvaez will step in behind the plate to catch for Jose Quintana.
Aug 3, 2023
Rest day Thursday
Alvarez is not in the lineup Thursday at Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
Omar Narvaez will start behind the plate and bat seventh for the visiting Mets as Alvarez grabs a bit of rest. The 21-year--old catcher boasts a .997 OPS with nine home runs and 18 RBI in 22 games (86 plate appearances) since the beginning of July.
Aug 1, 2023
Pummels another homer
Alvarez went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored in Tuesday's 7-6 loss to Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez came through in crunch time for New York, launching a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the 10th. However, his efforts were for naught, as the Royals answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to claim the victory. The long ball was Alvarez's 21st of the season and his second in as many games. Though the catcher is 5-for-27 (.185) in his last nine games, he's been productive with six runs scored and four RBI.
Jul 30, 2023
Gets Sunday off
Alvarez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
After starting behind the dish the last two days and smacking his 20th home run of the season in Saturday's 11-6 loss, Alvarez will get a breather in the series finale. Omar Narvaez will check into the lineup Sunday as the Mets' starting catcher.
Jul 30, 2023
Launches homer No. 20
Alvarez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 11-6 loss to the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
His ninth-inning shot off Andres Machado didn't impact the final result, but it did give the rookie catcher his first career 20-homer season. Alvarez's development has been one of the few bright spots for the Mets in 2023, but the 21-year-old might be wearing down under a heavy workload, slashing .200/.289/.425 in 12 games since the All-Star break.
Jul 27, 2023
Sitting Thursday
Alvarez isn't in the Mets' lineup Thursday against the Nationals, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After going 1-for-4 and scoring a run Wednesday, Alvarez will get a breather for Thursday's series opener. Omar Narvaez will take over behind the dish and bat ninth.
Jul 26, 2023
At catcher Wednesday
Alvarez (hand) is starting at catcher and batting eighth Wednesday versus the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez was removed from Tuesday's game after taking a pitch off his right hand, but X-rays came back negative and he's good to go for Wednesday's series finale against the Yanks. The 21-year-old catcher holds a strong .792 OPS with 19 home runs and 41 RBI through 260 major-league plate appearances this season.
Jul 25, 2023
Getting X-rays on hand
Alvarez will receive an X-ray on his right hand after getting hit by a pitch during the eighth inning of Tuesday's game, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
More details on Alvarez's injury will come once the results come back, but manager Buck Showalter said that there is "some concern" surrounding Alvarez's hand. Even if his X-rays come back clean, it's likely Alvarez sits out at least a game or two to recover.
Jul 23, 2023
Resting in series finale
Alvarez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez looks to be getting a routine day off after he started in each of the last five games at either catcher or designated hitter. Omar Narvaez will spell Alvarez behind the dish.
Jul 19, 2023
Goes yard twice in wild win
Alvarez went 2-for-4 with two walks, two home runs and four RBI in Tuesday's 11-10 win over the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
The rookie catcher smoked a pair of two-run blasts, taking Lucas Giolito deep in the first inning and Tanner Banks in the sixth to continue his July power surge. Alvarez is batting .368 (14-for-38) on the month with seven of his 19 homers on the year, and he's closing in on matching or surpassing the achievement of a Hall of Famer -- Johnny Bench holds the single-season record for home runs by a catcher 21 years or younger with 26, and Alvarez doesn't turn 22 until November.
Jul 8, 2023
Continues upward trend
Alvarez went 4-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored in Friday's 7-5 extra-inning win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez's home run streak ended at three games, but he was able to put up a third straight multi-hit effort. The catcher has gone 10-for-22 (.455) over six games in July, matching his total number of hits from his last 19 contests in June. The upward trend has him at a .241/.297/.512 slash line with 16 home runs, 34 RBI and 29 runs scored through 219 plate appearances.
Jul 7, 2023
Knocks another homer
Alvarez went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and an additional RBI in Thursday's 9-0 win over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez has homered in four of his last five games, giving him 16 long balls on the year. He's also collected seven RBI in that span. The catcher's up to a .227/.285/.505 slash line with 33 RBI and 28 runs scored through 213 plate appearances. He should continue to see steady playing time as long as he's squaring up the ball well.
Jul 6, 2023
Pops game-tying homer
Alvarez went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez went deep four times over 24 games in June, but he already has three homers across four contests in July. His blast Wednesday came in the ninth inning to tie the game at 1-1. The catcher is up to 15 homers, 30 RBI, 27 runs scored and a .221/.276/.487 slash line through 62 contests. His playing time should stay steady as long as his bat is warm.
Jul 2, 2023
Ends power drought Saturday
Alvarez went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The Mets' first three runs all came on third-inning solo shots, and it was Alvarez who kicked off the barrage. The rookie catcher snapped a 15-game power drought with the blast, a stretch in which he batted a woeful .111 (5-for-45) with only one RBI, and on the season Alvarez's slash line has swooned to .217/.273/.467, albeit with 13 homers in 59 games.
Jun 30, 2023
Breather Friday
Alvarez is not in the starting lineup Friday against the Giants, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez will take a seat after he went 1-for-10 with an RBI, a walk and three strikeouts during the team's series with the Brewers. Omar Narvaez will draw the start behind the plate and bat ninth in the series opener with San Francisco.
Jun 27, 2023
Sitting out Tuesday
Alvarez isn't in the Mets' lineup Tuesday against the Brewers, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez is 0-for-11 with five strikeouts across his last five games, so he'll take a seat Tuesday in order to regroup. Omar Narvaez will fill in behind the plate and bat ninth against his former squad.
Jun 25, 2023
Hits bench Sunday
Alvarez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez started the first two games of the series in Philadelphia and will take a seat for the finale after going 0-for-6 with a walk and two strikeouts. Omar Narvaez will step in behind the plate to catch for Carlos Carrasco.
Jun 21, 2023
Sitting Wednesday
Alvarez will sit Wednesday versus the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez will take a seat after he went 2-for-6 with a double, two runs, a walk and three strikeouts over the first two games of the series. Omar Narvaez will draw the start at catcher and bat ninth in the series finale with Houston.
Jun 20, 2023
Starting at catcher Tuesday
Alvarez (hand) is in the starting lineup Tuesday at Houston.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez was pulled from Monday's series opener versus the Astros after taking a foul ball off his right hand, but X-rays turned up negative for any structural damage. He will catch and bat sixth for the Mets on Tuesday night at Minute Maid Park.
Jun 19, 2023
Hit by foul ball, X-rays negative
Alvarez was removed from Monday's game against the Astros after fouling a ball off his right hand, and initial X-rays came back negative, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez will presumably undergo more tests Tuesday to determine the severity of his injury, but it's very possible the young backstop is held out of Tuesday's lineup. Fantasy managers should consider him as day-to-day for now.
Jun 16, 2023
Day off Friday
Alvarez isn't in the Mets' lineup Friday against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez has been in a slump as of late, slashing just .143/.182/.286 over the past week. He'll get Friday off to regroup, allowing Omar Narvaez to start behind the dish and bat ninth.
Jun 11, 2023
Power surge continues
Alvarez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Saturday's 5-1 win over the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
The 21-year-old catcher went yard for the fourth time in the last four games during the eighth inning, when Colin Holderman let a sweeper catch too much of the plate. Alvarez has hit second for the Mets in three straight games, and with Pete Alonso (wrist) potentially unavailable for the rest of June, the youngster figures to remain in a prime spot in the lineup. He's been up to the task -- over his last 18 games, Alvarez is slashing .290/.333/.758 with nine of his 12 homers and 19 of his 25 RBI.
Jun 9, 2023
Goes deep twice in loss
Alvarez went 2-for-5 with two home runs, a walk and three RBI in Thursday's extra-inning loss to Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez worked as the team's DH in the contest and justified his placement in that role with a pair of big blasts. The backstop has overcome a slow start to the campaign with a powerful 16-game stretch during which he's swatted eight homers, driven in 17 runs, scored 10 times and posted a .283/.333/.774 slash line. Alvarez is now tied for second among big-league catchers with 11 homers on the season.
Jun 6, 2023
Not in lineup Tuesday
Alvarez is not in the starting lineup Tuesday at Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez caught fire toward the end of May, but he's gone 0-for-14 with four strikeouts and zero walks over his last five games. Omar Narvaez will start behind the plate and bat ninth for the Mets on Tuesday night.
Jun 3, 2023
Day off Saturday
Alvarez isn't starting Saturday against the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez is currently in the middle of an 0-for-10 stretch at the plate across his last three games, so he'll get a day off Saturday to regroup. Tomas Nido will take over behind the plate for New York and bat ninth.
May 31, 2023
Sitting out Wednesday
Alvarez is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's tilt versus the Phillies, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez had started six straight but will take a seat for this one. Tomas Nido is catching Carlos Carrasco.
May 28, 2023
Swats eighth homer
Alvarez went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run in Sunday's 11-10 loss to the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez put an exclamation point on the Mets' six-run fourth inning. The homer was his fifth during his eight-game hitting streak, a span in which he's added 13 RBI while batting .400 (12-for-30). The young slugger is up to eight homers, 19 RBI, 14 runs scored and a .269/.327/.558 slash line through 33 contests this season.
May 28, 2023
Hitting second versus Rockies
Alvarez is hitting second and starting behind the plate versus Colorado on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez has hit near the bottom of the order for the majority of the season, but he's moved up to the second spot for Sunday's series finale against the Rockies. The 21-year-old backstop has swung the bat well as of late, and he went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in the 10-7 loss to Colorado on Saturday. If Alvarez continues to swing a hot stick, its possible he'll earn more opportunities to hit near the top of the lineup on a more consistent basis.
May 28, 2023
Stays hot Saturday
Alvarez went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and a double in Saturday's 10-7 loss to the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez has hit safely in his last seven games, going 11-for-25 (.440) with four homers and 10 RBI in that span. The catcher also has just one strikeout in that span, which came in Saturday's contest. It's been enough to earn him a starting role lately. Alvarez is slashing .273/.333/.545 with seven homers, 16 RBI, 13 runs scored and six doubles through 108 plate appearances.
May 25, 2023
Launches another long ball
Alvarez went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's loss to the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez accounted for all of New York's runs Wednesday with his two-run homer in the third inning. It was his third long ball over his past four contests, a span in which the backstop is hitting .462 (6-for-13) with seven RBI and no strikeouts. The injured Tomas Nido (eye) and Omar Narvaez (calf) may be ready to return to the Mets soon, but it wouldn't be surprising to see Alvarez continue to hold down primary catcher duties given his recent offensive surge.
May 24, 2023
Making strong case to stay
Alvarez continues to develop at a rapid pace in the majors, and the 21-year-old is making a strong case to stay with the Mets even when the team's other catchers get healthy, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez has a slow start at the plate after being called up in early April, but through 16 games in May he's slashing .271/.364/.604 with four doubles and four homers, and his work with the pitching staff and defensive chops behind the plate are also growing by leaps and bounds. He's currently being backed up by Gary Sanchez, but some time in the next few weeks both Tomas Nido (vision issues) and Omar Narvaez (calf) figure to get healthy. Alvarez is the only one of the four with minor-league options remaining, but with the Mets finally beginning to meet expectations -- the team saw a five-game winning streak snapped Tuesday -- continuity and performance could well be prioritized ahead of organizational depth, keeping the youngster in the big leagues.
May 23, 2023
Not in lineup Tuesday
Alvarez is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Gary Sanchez will get the start at catcher and bat ninth versus the Cubs and left-hander Drew Smyly. Mark Vientos is serving as the designated hitter and batting fifth.
May 21, 2023
Not starting Game 1
Alvarez is out of the lineup for Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader versus Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
The 21-year-old went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs Friday after missing one game due to some general soreness, and he'll take a seat for Sunday's matinee. Gary Sanchez will work behind the plate in Game 1, and Alvarez is likely to be back in the lineup for the nightcap.
May 19, 2023
Ready to go Friday
Alvarez (undisclosed) is back behind the plate and will bat ninth Friday against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez missed Thursday's win with an undisclosed injury, but he appears ready to go for the series opener with Cleveland. The catcher has gone 2-for-17 over his last five contests, though both hits went for extra bases.
May 18, 2023
Dinged up, out Thursday
Alvarez is out of the lineup Thursday against the Rays because he is "dinged up," Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
It doesn't sound like anything overly concerning for the young catcher, who hit a game-tying three-run homer in the ninth inning of Wednesday's comeback win over Tampa Bay. He caught all 10 innings in the 8-7 victory. Michael Perez will start behind the plate in Thursday's matinee.
May 18, 2023
Hits dramatic homer against Rays
Alvarez went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run Wednesday in an extra-inning win over Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez grounded out to shortstop in each of his first three plate appearances, but he came through in the clutch in the ninth. With the Mets trailing 5-2 and down to their final out, the backstop blasted a 426-foot, three-run homer off Jason Adam to tie the score and send the contest to extra innings. The long ball was the fourth of the season for Alvarez, who slugged 28 homers between the majors and minors last season.

On base three times Monday
Alvarez went 1-for-2 with two walks and a double in Monday's loss to the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Hitting ninth against veteran southpaw Patrick Corbin, Alvarez drew multiple free passes in a game for just the second time in his brief big-league career. The 21-year-old backstop is having a fairly productive May so far, batting .257 (9-for-35) with four doubles, two homers, four RBI and four runs in 40 plate appearances, and he appears to be earning manager Buck Showalter's trust with his defensive work as well.
May 13, 2023
Resting Saturday
Alvarez will sit Saturday against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
With Tomas Nido (eye) joining Omar Narvaez (calf) on the injured list this week, Alvarez has handled a heavy workload behind the plate, starting six consecutive games. Michael Perez will take over Saturday.
May 11, 2023
Starting day game after night game
Alvarez is starting at catcher and batting ninth Thursday for the Mets' game against the Reds, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a day game after a night game and marks Alvarez's fifth start in a row. The young catcher is hitting .286/.348/.548 with three homers in his last 15 contests.
May 10, 2023
Goes yard twice in loss
Alvarez went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs in Tuesday's 7-6 loss to the Reds.
ANALYSIS
He took Luke Weaver deep in both the third and sixth innings, giving the 21-year-old backstop his first career multi-homer game in the majors. Alvarez has gotten comfortable at the plate for the Mets after a sluggish couple of weeks following his promotion, and over his last 12 games he's batting .323 (10-for-31) with two doubles, three home runs, five RBI and six runs.
May 5, 2023
Sitting Friday
Alvarez isn't starting Friday against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez is batting .273 (3-for-11) over the last week, and he will get a day off Friday. While he sits, Tomas Nido will take over behind the plate and bat ninth.
May 3, 2023
Resting for Game 1 of twin bill
Alvarez is out of the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Tigers, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez had been behind the dish for three of the Mets' last four games, but he'll sit out the first half of the twin bill while Tomas Nido gets a turn to catch starting pitcher Joey Lucchesi. Expect Alvarez to re-enter the lineup for the second game to form a battery with Max Scherzer.
May 1, 2023
Sitting for day game
Alvarez will sit Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader with Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez will get a rest in Monday's matinee after he went 1-for-2 in the first contest of the series. Tomas Nido will start behind the plate and bat ninth versus Atlanta.
Apr 28, 2023
Starting at catcher Friday
Alvarez (head) is starting at catcher and batting ninth Friday versus Atlanta, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez was lifted from Thursday's series finale against the Nationals after getting hit in the head by a couple of swings, but he checked out fine after the game and will make a second straight start behind the plate for the Mets. Thomas Nido is on the bench.
Apr 27, 2023
Exits as precaution
Alvarez exited Thursday's game against the Nationals after being hit in the head by two swings, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez exited the game in the ninth inning, though manager Buck Showalter said he checked out okay after the game. Alvarez's availability for Friday's game against Atlanta is currently unclear. Prior to departing, he went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
Apr 27, 2023
Starting at catcher Thursday
Alvarez is starting at catcher and batting ninth Thursday against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez is just 5-for-31 (.161) with one home run in 31 plate appearances since his April 7 promotion from Triple-A Syracuse, but he is at least drawing more starts now over Tomas Nido. The 21-year-old has been in the Mets' lineup three of the last four games, including Thursday night's series finale versus Washington.
Apr 25, 2023
Gets another start at catcher
Alvarez is starting at catcher and batting ninth Tuesday against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez connected for his first major-league homer of the season in Sunday's series finale against the Giants and will be rewarded with a second straight start behind the dish as the Mets open a three-game set versus Washington. Tomas Nido is sitting.
Apr 24, 2023
Slugs first homer of season
Alvarez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Giants.
ANALYSIS
His sixth-inning shot off Tyler Rogers tied the game at 4-4, but the Mets eventually came up short. The homer was Alvarez's first in eight games since his promotion, and the 21-year-old has begun to alternate starts behind the dish with Tomas Nido. Alvarez is batting just .148 (4-for-27) in the majors this year with a 0:9 BB:K, but with more consistent playing time, he could heat up -- three of his four hits have come in his last three starts.
Apr 20, 2023
Out of starting lineup Thursday
Alvarez is not in the lineup Thursday night against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Tomas Nido will catch and bat ninth with left-hander Sean Manaea on the mound for San Francisco. Alvarez has started just five of a possible 13 games since his promotion from Triple-A Syracuse on April 7.
Apr 15, 2023
Starting at catcher Saturday
Alvarez is starting at catcher and batting ninth Saturday against the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
It's just his third start in seven possible games since his callup from Triple-A Syracuse last Friday, and all three of those starts have been behind the plate. Alvarez has yet to work into the DH mix for the Mets.
Apr 14, 2023
Out of lineup again Friday
Alvarez is not in the starting lineup Friday at Oakland.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez has started just two of a possible six games since his promotion from Triple-A Syracuse last week. Tomas Nido is catching and batting ninth for the Mets on Friday night against the Athletics. Daniel Vogelbach is serving as the designated hitter and hitting sixth.
Apr 11, 2023
Starting at catcher Tuesday
Alvarez is starting at catcher and batting ninth Tuesday against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Mark Canha is at designated hitter and Tomas Nido is on the bench. Alvarez drew his first major-league start of the season Sunday versus the Marlins and went 1-for-4 with an RBI single.
Apr 10, 2023
Collects RBI in first start
Alvarez went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Sunday's loss to the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Getting the start behind the plate and batting eighth, Alvarez got the Mets on the board in the second inning with a single that brought home Mark Canha, although he also struck out twice. Manager Buck Showalter has made it clear he prefers Tomas Nido's defense and game-calling at catcher to Alvarez's, but with the team's offense struggling early, the 21-year-old top prospect could find his way into the lineup frequently at either catcher or DH if he can make an impact with his bat.
Apr 8, 2023
Season debut coming Sunday
Manager Buck Showalter said Alvarez, who isn't in the lineup Saturday versus the Marlins, will start Sunday's series finale, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez was promoted from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday but has been limited to bench duties in his first two games with the big club. The 21-year-old is poised to see significant playing time between catcher and designated hitter with Omar Narvaez (calf) set to be sidelined for the next two-plus months. Tomas Nido is working behind the plate again Saturday.
Apr 8, 2023
Not starting Saturday
Alvarez is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
The 21-year-old was officially called up by the Mets on Friday but hasn't received a start in the first two games with the big club. Alvarez could work behind the plate Sunday with Tomas Nido working back-to-back days, and it should only be a matter of time before the top prospect is seeing regular action between catcher and designated hitter.
Apr 7, 2023
Not in Friday's lineup
Alvarez is not in the Mets' lineup for Friday's home opener versus the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez was officially recalled prior to Friday's contest but will be on the bench in favor of Tomas Nido. The 21-year-old will play plenty, likely receiving some starts at designated hitter in addition to catcher, but Nido is also going to continue getting his starts.
Apr 7, 2023
Promotion made official
Alvarez was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse by the Mets on Friday.
ANALYSIS
With Omar Narvaez (calf) expected to be sidelined until June, Alvarez will get a long look with the big club, likely sharing catching duties with Tomas Nido while also drawing some starts in the designated hitter spot. The 21-year-old's upside alone warrants a pick-up in fantasy leagues where he is available, although keep in mind he might only be eligible at DH initially. Alvarez posted an .885 OPS with 27 home runs in 112 games last season in the minors and added another homer during his brief time in the majors. He had already popped two homers through four games this year with Syracuse prior to his promotion.
Apr 6, 2023
Lined up for big role in NY
Alvarez is in position to receive steady playing time with the Mets as Omar Narvaez recovers from a severe left calf strain.
ANALYSIS
Narvaez was diagnosed Thursday with a medium-to-high grade strain of his left calf after making an early exit from Wednesday's game against the Brewers. He will be placed on the injured list before Friday's home opener versus the Marlins, and Alvarez is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move. The 21-year-old top prospect figures to share time at catcher with Tomas Nido and can get another helping of starts out of the DH spot. He posted an .885 OPS with 27 home runs in 112 games last season between the Double-A and Triple-A levels, and would appear capable of offering immediate fantasy production as he makes his way to Queens.
Apr 5, 2023
Joining taxi squad
Alvarez is headed to New York to join the Mets in the event he is needed on the active roster, Michael Mayer of MetsmerizedOnline.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Omar Narvaez exited Wednesday's game in Milwaukee with a calf injury and will be evaluated by team doctors when they arrive in New York. If he needs to go on the injured list, Alvarez will be the one to replace him. The young catcher is 3-for-12 with a home run and a double in the early going at Triple-A Syracuse. If he's added to the Mets' roster, Alvarez would likely share time with Tomas Nido behind the plate and perhaps see some starts at designated hitter while Narvaez is out. He's worth scooping up in fantasy leagues, but keep in mind he might only be DH-eligible initially.
Mar 22, 2023
Headed for Triple-A
The Mets optioned Alvarez to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Though Alvarez remains the Mets' long-term plan at catcher, he had been splitting time behind the plate and at designated hitter this spring while easing his way back from the ankle surgery he underwent last October. Alvarez is expected to see the bulk of his starts at catcher early in the season at Triple-A, and if he's able to acquit himself well defensively while continuing to draw walks and hit for power, he may not have to wait long for a call-up to the big leagues. The Mets brought in Omar Narvaez in free agency on a two-year deal over the winter, but he took a major step back with the bat in 2022 and is viewed as a placeholder until Alvarez is deemed ready for the full-time catching job.
Mar 2, 2023
To play catcher Friday
Alvarez (ankle) will make his first Grapefruit League appearance at catcher Friday against the Nationals, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez has been limited to DH duties over the Mets' first handful of spring games as he completes his recovery from October ankle surgery, but the restrictions are ready to be lifted. The 21-year-old top prospect is on track to become a key contributor for New York at some point in 2023, probably after one more short stay at Triple-A Syracuse.
Mar 1, 2023
Likely to catch games by Friday
Mets manager Buck Showalter announced that Alvarez (ankle) will likely get a chance to catch in a Grapefruit League, Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated reports.
ANALYSIS
The Mets are being cautious with Alvarez after their top prospect underwent ankle surgery in the offseason. The backstop has appeared as a designated hitter in Florida, but will get a chance to be behind the plate by the end of the week. Alvarez has a chance to be a star fantasy contributor, but is likely to begin the 2023 season in Triple-A with Syracuse.
Feb 18, 2023
Expected to begin year at Triple-A
Alvarez will likely begin the season with Triple-A Syracuse, Abbey Mastracco of The New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
The Mets have two more experienced catchers ahead of him on the depth chart in Omar Narvaez and Tomas Nido, so the club figures to send Alvarez back to the minors to work on his defense and gain some confidence. The 21-year-old is fully recovered from October ankle surgery however, and a big spring could force the organization to re-consider its plans for the top prospect. "You always want players to make you think about what if?" manager Buck Showalter said Friday. "Not everybody in camp can make the club, that's just how it is. But we know Nido and Omar are going to be our catchers and we'll see where Francisco fits in that mix." Even if he isn't on the Opening Day roster, Alvarez figures to be back in the majors at some point this season, potentially seeing at-bats at DH in addition to his work behind the plate.
Oct 18, 2022
Undergoes surgery
Alvarez underwent surgery on his right ankle Thursday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
The surgery was done to address the cartilage damage Alvarez suffered in late August. The procedure was an option at the time Alvarez suffered the injury, though he opted to play through it in the short term. Alvarez is expected to be fully healthy for spring training, when he'll have the chance to compete for a roster spot to break camp with the big-league club.
Oct 5, 2022
Launches first career homer
Alvarez went 2-for-2 with a double and a solo home run in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
The Mets scored seven runs in the first inning of the nightcap en route to an 8-0 win, so they emptied the bench in the sixth inning. Alvarez took over behind the plate and collected his first big-league hit by taking Carl Edwards deep to lead off the bottom of the frame. It's not yet clear whether New York plans on keeping the 20-year-old on its playoff roster as a bench bat, but Alvarez at least gave the team a glimpse of what he's capable of if he does stick around.
Sep 30, 2022
Officially promoted Friday
Alvarez was called up to the Mets' big league roster and is set to make his major-league debut Friday against Atlanta, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
The 20-year-old catching prospect has slashed .233/.382/.440 through 199 plate appearances in Triple-A Syracuse. He might not provide an immediate impact, but he certainly figures to deliver some good at-bats heading into 2023. Alvarez will serve as the Mets' designated hitter Friday and bat seventh.
Sep 29, 2022
Set to join big-league club
Alvarez will join the Mets' big-league roster Friday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The Mets are in the thick of a tight race for the NL East crown despite a major weakness at the catcher position. James McCann owns a .519 OPS on the season, while Tomas Nido's .598 OPS isn't much better. Exactly what kind of boost the 20-year-old Alvarez can provide right away is unclear, though he's one of the highest-rated catching prospects in the league and has hit .260/.374/.511 with 28 homers in 112 games across the two highest levels of the minors this season, so he certainly has the potential to make an impact.
Sep 12, 2022
Rejoins Triple-A lineup
Alvarez (ankle) returned to the lineup Sunday for Triple-A Syracuse, serving as the club's designated hitter while going 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez was back in action for the affiliate after missing nearly three weeks due to a loose body in his right ankle. The Mets' top catching prospect was fortunate to avoid surgery on the ankle and was able to play again before the minor-league season came to a close, but it's unclear if he'll be ready to resume duties behind the plate at any point during the next two weeks. Alvarez's recent absence due to the ankle issue might have been enough to halt any momentum he might have built for a promotion to the big leagues in 2022.
Sep 1, 2022
Avoiding surgery on ankle
The Mets announced Thursday that Alvarez has been diagnosed with a loose body in his right ankle but won't need surgery to address the injury, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Instead, Alvarez, who hasn't played for Triple-A Syracuse since Aug. 23, will receive a pain-killing injection in the ankle with the hope of resuming baseball activities in 3-to-4 days. If the injection yields the desired effect and Alvarez responds well to workouts, he could slot back into the Triple-A lineup by mid-September. The time that Alvarez has missed in addition to his lackluster numbers at Syracuse since receiving a promotion from Double-A Binghamton in early July makes it unlikely that he'll get the call up to the Mets before the end of the season, even though the big club has received little production from catchers James McCann and Tomas Nido.
Aug 28, 2022
Injures ankle, may be done for 2022
Alvarez hasn't played for Triple-A Syracuse since Tuesday due to a right ankle injury and could be at risk of missing the rest of the 2022 season, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The 20-year-old is scheduled to undergo testing in New York in the coming days, but the Mets fear the backstop may need surgery, according to Michael Mayer of MetsmerizedOnline.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Even if Alvarez is able to avoid surgery and makes his return to the Triple-A lineup at some point before season's end, the time missed due to injury could be enough to take him out of consideration for a promotion to the big club in September ahead of a potential playoff push. The Mets have gotten limited offensive production this season from their top two backstops (Tomas Nido and James McCann), and Alvarez -- who has produced a .715 OPS as the youngest player at Triple-A since his early July promotion from Double-A Binghamton -- might have offered an upgrade. At this stage, however, the Mets' top priority is likely ensuring Alvarez is fully healthy for spring training, at which point he could have a chance at earning a spot on the Opening Day roster.
Aug 25, 2022
Working through Triple-A struggles
Alvarez went 2-for-3 with a homer, two walks, three RBI and two runs in his most recent game for Triple-A Syracuse, but he's still hitting just .179/.340/.375 in 32 games since his promotion.
ANALYSIS
The 20-year-old backstop has seen his power stroke show up only in fits and starts at the highest level of the minors, as Tuesday's long ball snapped a stretch of 11 straight games without an extra-base hits. That said, while his overall stat line with Syracuse is ugly, there are some positives to be found in it. Alvarez has a .209 BABIP in Triple-A that's bound for positive regression, and while his strikeout rate has climbed to an uncomfortable 28.4 percent (from 24 percent in Double-A this year), his walk rate has also spiked to 17.6 percent (from 12.5). It's also worth remembering that Alvarez is exceptionally young for a catching prospect on the doorstep of the major leagues -- for one illustrative example, when Orioles stud rookie backstop Adley Rutschman was Alvarez's age, he was still playing college ball.
Jul 11, 2022
Not on radar for promotion
Alvarez will continue his development in the minors and isn't an option to replace James McCann (oblique) on the major-league roster, The New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
The 20-year-old was only recently promoted to Triple-A, where he's gone 2-for-16 with a double through his first five games. Alvarez's bat will probably wake up before long at Syracuse, but the Mets are more concerned with his development and long-term outlook than in rushing the young catcher to the majors to plug a hole in the roster. Prior to his promotion, the team's top prospect slashed .277/.368/.553 through 67 games for Double-A Binghamton with 18 home runs.
Jul 2, 2022
Bumped up to Triple-A
Alvarez was informed Saturday that he is being promoted to Triple-A Syracuse, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The 20-year-old is expected to join the Mets' top minor-league affiliate Monday. Alvarez finishes his time with Double-A Binghamton with a .277/.368/.553 line, 18 homers and 47 RBI in 67 games -- beyond impressive for his age at that level. Alvarez is widely considered the Mets' top prospect and one of the top catching prospects in all of baseball. If he picks up where he left off, Alvarez could get a look in Queens before the end of the 2022 season.
May 18, 2022
Power outage in Double-A lately
Alvarez is hitting .248/.339/.438 with four homers and a 14:31 BB:K across 28 games for Double-A Binghamton.
ANALYSIS
He hit all four of those homers in his first six games of the season and has managed none since, with an ugly .210/.313/.272 line across his last 22 contests. That said, Alvarez has been showing signs of emerging from the slump recently, as he actually has a six-game hitting streak going during which he's hit .409 with a couple doubles. If he can keep that up, we might see him come up at some point this season, especially if James McCann's wrist injury lingers or further injuries hit the Mets' catcher corps, but Alvarez is just 20 years old and would be best served by additional minor-league development time.
Mar 28, 2022
Sent to minor-league camp
The Mets reassigned Alvarez to minor-league spring training Monday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez was in big-league camp with the Mets but never had a realistic chance of making the Opening Day roster. The 20-year-old, who is New York's top prospect, spent most of the 2021 campaign at High-A Brooklyn, where he hit .247/.351/.538 with 22 home runs, 58 RBI and six stolen bases in 84 games. He's likely to start out 2022 with Double-A Binghamton given his success at Brooklyn last season.
Mar 25, 2022
Clubs homer Thursday
Alvarez went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
The Mets' top prospect didn't start the game and his long ball came in the eighth inning against career minor-leaguer Aneurys Zabala, but it was still an impressive display from Alvarez. The catcher slugged 22 homers with an .889 OPS in 84 games for High-A Brooklyn last season as a teenager, and how he performs against much older pitchers in the high minors this year will go a long way toward determining his big-league ETA.
Aug 12, 2021
Four-RBI day for Brooklyn
Alvarez went 3-for-4 with a homer, a walk, four RBI and two runs against High-A Wilmington on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
While Alvarez is still hitting a fairly modest .243 with Brooklyn -- a far cry from his .417 mark with Low-A St. Lucie before being promoted -- he's put up a spectacular .341/.388/.756 line over his last 12 games. All in all, Alvarez has slammed 13 homers across 57 contests in High-A, and despite taking a golden sombrero on Sunday, he's been doing a great job cutting down on his swing-and-miss issues of late. There aren't a lot of truly special prospect bats that project to stick at catcher, but Alvarez is one of them -- arguably the best one.
Jul 15, 2021
Showing power, patience in High-A
Alvarez has hit .231/.350/.479 with seven homers, 20 RBI, 21 runs and a 20:35 BB:K across 37 games since being promoted to High-A Brooklyn.
ANALYSIS
His strikeout rate has more than doubled from his stint in Low-A earlier this year (from 10.4 percent to an even 25 percent), but Alvarez has also had some bad batted-ball luck, so it's fair to expect his average to climb. Considering that he's still 19 years old -- a full four years younger than the average player in the High-A East league -- he's doing great. His stats have been hurt significantly by a recent slump, as Alvarez has gone 1-for-32 over his last eight games. Before that, he was hitting .286/.389/.571 with Brooklyn. Alvarez is a ways off from the majors, but he's one of the most exciting catching prospects in the game.
Jun 2, 2021
Slugs first homer at High-A
Alvarez went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run for High-A Brooklyn on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The Mets' No. 3 fantasy prospect got promoted from Low-A late last week, and after going 2-for-12 in his first four games at the new level, Alvarez connected on his first homer for the Cyclones and his third in 20 games on the season. The Mets may be reluctant to advance the 19-year-old up the ladder any further this year no matter how well he does for Brooklyn, but he continues to solidify his spot at the team's catcher of the future.
May 20, 2021
Back in action
Alvarez (lower body) will catch and bat third for Low-A St. Lucie in Thursday's game against the Palm Beach.
ANALYSIS
Alvarez limped off the field in a May 12 game against Daytona after a collision at the plate, but the injury only proved to be a minor concern for the Mets' top catching prospect. He returned to action three days later, and he's now 3-for-11 in his first three games back in the lineup. Perhaps in a preview of what could become a regular battery down the road, the 20-year-old Alvarez will be catching rehabbing Mets ace Jacob deGrom (side) on Thursday.
May 14, 2021
Limps off field Thursday
Alvarez was removed from Thursday's game in the first inning for Low-A St. Lucie after a collision at home plate, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The catcher limped off the field, but initial reports suggest the injury isn't serious. Alvarez was off to a fantastic start to the season, slashing .545/.656/.818 through 11 at-bats with a homer, three doubles and a 9:3 BB:K, and a promotion to High-A this summer seems almost inevitable if the injury doesn't derail his momentum.
