Takes second loss Saturday
Speier (2-2) took the extra-innings loss against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing three runs (two earned) on a hit and a walk over one-third of an inning. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Speier got seven of his nine pitches into the strike zone, but he allowed a go-ahead RBI single to Max Muncy that snapped a 1-1 tie and was subsequently charged with an additional run when Chris Taylor singled Muncy in following Speier's exit. The outing marked Speier's second straight allowing a run after a brief four-appearance scoreless streak, but he's still been serviceable for fantasy managers with 17 holds and a 10.3 K/9 across his 64 appearances.

Grabs first career save
Speier picked up the save Sunday against the Astros. He allowed one hit while striking out two over a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
The Mariners turned to Speier in the ninth after Matt Brash and Andres Munoz each pitched earlier in the contests. The 28-year-old left-hander struck out Yordan Alvarez and Yainer Diaz before working around a two-out single to close out a 7-6 win. Speier hasn't allowed a run in his last 13 appearances (11.1 innings). His ERA is down to 3.16 this season with a 0.94 WHIP and 46:6 K:BB across 42.2 innings. While Munoz still figures to see the majority of save chances in Seattle, Speier has proven to be a strong high-leverage option, particularly against left-handers.

Gets second win Saturday
Speier (2-1) recorded the win over the Angels on Saturday, retiring the only batter he faced on a strikeout to close out the fifth inning.
ANALYSIS
What might seem like an easy win on the surface actually took some doing from Speier. The southpaw worked through an eight-pitch encounter with Shohei Ohtani that saw the two-way star work the count to 3-2 before fouling off a pair of sinkers and finally go down looking, leaving men stranded on second and third in the process. Speier has proven a highly effective addition to the Mariners bullpen, now posting eight consecutive scoreless appearances and generating an impressive 20:2 K:BB to go along with a 2.38 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and seen holds across 22.2 innings.

Recalled from Triple-A
Speier was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma by Seattle on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Speier replaces Robbie Ray, as Ray was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left flexor strain. The southpaw will give the Mariners a left-handed option in the bullpen and likely work in low-leverage situations while with Seattle.
Mar 26, 2023
Heading to Triple-A
Speier was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was claimed off waivers by the Mariners in November and will debut for the organization at the Triple-A level. Speier had a 2.33 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB over 19.1 innings with Kansas City last year, so he could certainly work his way into Seattle's bullpen mix at some point in 2023.
Mar 17, 2023
Solid results in spring
Speier has a 4.76 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 8:0 K:BB across 5.2 innings over six Cactus League appearances.
ANALYSIS
Speier's slightly elevated ERA is almost exclusively the byproduct of having allowed two earned runs on three hits across one inning against the Angels on Monday, as he's been highly effective otherwise. Speier has given up just an earned run on two hits over 4.2 frames in his other five Cactus League outings, a caliber of performance similar to that which produced the 2.00 ERA and 1.15 WHIP he put together in 27 innings over 24 appearances for the Royals over the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Nov 9, 2022
Nabbed by M's
The Mariners claimed Speier off waivers from the Royals on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Speier provides the Mariners with an extra left-handed option out of the bullpen heading into 2023, though he's likely to settle for a low-leverage role if he earns a spot on the Opening Day roster. He made 19 appearances for Kansas City in 2022, logging a 2.33 ERA and 1.09 WHIP while striking out 14 in 19.1 innings.

Returning to Triple-A
The Royals optioned Speier to Triple-A Omaha following Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Speier is one of 10 players who will come off the 26-man active roster with Kansas City needing to clear room for the 10 players returning from the restricted list ahead of the team's next game Friday against the Rays. The 27-year-old lefty reliever went unused in Sunday's loss after being called up from Triple-A prior to the contest.
Jul 17, 2022
Called up from Triple-A
The Royals recalled Speier from Triple-A Omaha on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Speier will be joining the Royals' 26-man active roster as a replacement for starting pitcher Brady Singer (personal), who was one of 10 Royals placed on the restricted list Thursday ahead of the team's four-game series in Toronto due to his vaccination status. Because Singer started Wednesday's contest, the Royals weren't able to immediately replace him on the roster until three days later. Speier will give the Royals a fresh left-handed arm out of the bullpen Sunday in the team's final game before the All-Star break.

Returns to minors
Speier was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Speier returned from the COVID-19 injured list last week and will now head back to the minors. The left-hander has a 2.33 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB over 19.1 innings this season for the Royals, so it should only be a matter of time before he's back in the majors.
Jun 18, 2022
Returns to action
Speier walked one and struck out none in two-thirds of a scoreless inning Friday versus the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Speier had been on the COVID-19 injured list before he was activated Friday. The southpaw has now gone 4.1 scoreless innings across his last four appearances. He had started to earn the occasional chance for holds prior to his two-plus-week absence. He's posted a 2.41 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 15:5 K:BB in 18.2 innings overall while adding two holds and an 0-1 record in 16 outings.
Jun 17, 2022
Activated Friday
Speier was activated from the COVID-19 injured list Friday.
ANALYSIS
He made one rehab assignment appearance, tossing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts on June 15. Speier should work in low-to-mid leverage situations.
Jun 14, 2022
Begins rehab assignment
Speier (illness) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Speier has spent the past two weeks on the COVID-19 injured list. Given the relatively brief length of his absence, he may only need one or two rehab appearances before he's cleared to return.
Jun 8, 2022
Will need rehab assignment
Speier (illness) will go out on a rehab assignment before he's activated from the COVID-19 injured list, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Speier, along with Matt Peacock and Amir Garrett, was among the Royals' small virus outbreak in the bullpen. Since he'll need a rehab assignment, Speier is likely to be out for a little longer, though his presence in the clubhouse Tuesday indicates he has cleared the virus protocols and should be back in game action soon.
May 30, 2022
Placed on injured list
Speier was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Monday.
ANALYSIS
The Royals officially placed Speier on the IL without an injury designation, but that presumably means that he's sidelined due to the league's COVID-19 protocols. While it's not yet clear whether the southpaw has tested positive for the virus, he'll need to spend some time away from the team. Speier had been effective recently, striking out four in 3.2 scoreless innings over his last three appearances.
May 20, 2022
Falters in first loss
Speier (0-1) took the loss Thursday versus the White Sox. He allowed a run on three hits and recorded only one out, a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Speier got into trouble when tasked with pitching the seventh inning. He allowed singles to three of the four batters he faced, with Adam Engel knocking in the go-ahead run for the White Sox. After 11.1 scoreless innings to start the season, Speier's experienced some regression with four runs allowed in his last two innings across three appearances. The southpaw still owns a 2.70 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 9:0 K:BB through 13.1 innings, but he'll need to settle back in after some shaky outings in the last week.
May 12, 2022
Pitches two clean innings
Speier didn't allow a baserunner in two innings, striking out one in a no-decision Wednesday versus the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Wednesday's was a bullpen game for the Royals, and Speier got it started the right way before turning the ball over to Joel Payamps. Through eight outings, Speier has yet to allow a run or issue a walk. The southpaw has racked up eight strikeouts while allowing just three hits over 11.1 innings, though he's yet to record a decision, a save or a hold. His success as an opener Wednesday could lead to him seeing more time in that role later in the year if necessary.
May 11, 2022
Serving as opener Wednesday
Speier is listed as the Royals' starting pitcher for Wednesday's game in Texas and is expected to serve as the opener in a bullpen day, Lynn Worthy of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Speier has yet to allow a run over seven relief appearances this season but hasn't recorded more than six outs in any of those outings. The Royals are thus unlikely to keep him in the game more than one time through the order before turning the game over to their relief corps. Former starting pitcher Kris Bubic will be available out of the bullpen and hasn't been used since May 4, so he could be a logical candidate to pick up the bulk of the innings behind Speier.
Apr 22, 2022
Not seeing much work
Speier allowed a hit in a scoreless inning in Thursday's 1-0 loss to the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Thursday's outing was just the second appearance of the year for Speier. He's covered 2.2 scoreless innings, striking out three and allowing only two hits. The 27-year-old southpaw made just 24 major-league appearances across the previous three seasons. He'll likely continue to serve as a middle-innings option while with the Royals, though it's unclear if he'll stay in the big leagues when rosters go from 28 to 26 players on May 2.
Apr 5, 2022
Earns roster spot
Speier was awarded a spot on the Opening Day roster, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Speier finished 2021 well with a 1.17 ERA and 1.30 WHIP across 7.2 innings after spending the bulk of the season with Triple-A Omaha. The southpaw saw mainly low-leverage work, and with plenty of bullpen arms ahead of him, Speier should expect to see most of his time in the middle innings in 2022.
Oct 2, 2021
Solid since call-up
Speier has allowed three runs (one earned) in seven innings since he was promoted from Triple-A Omaha.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old has been a little unlucky with errors, and his 1.29 WHIP is nothing to write home about, but he's been able to limit the damage in a small sample size. Speier has covered 20 innings across three big-league seasons, so he shouldn't be expected to see more than a low-leverage relief role entering next season.
Sep 15, 2021
Contract selected by Kansas City
Speier had his contract selected by the Royals on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Speier will receive his first look in the majors this season after posting a 2.98 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 57:9 K:BB over 45.1 innings for Triple-A Omaha. The 26-year-old appeared in 17 games for the Royals over the previous two seasons and surrendered 11 runs across 13 innings.
Nov 25, 2020
Outrighted to Triple-A
Speier cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Speier was designated for assignment by the Royals on Friday, and he'll remain in the organization after going unclaimed on waivers. The southpaw has made 17 relief appearances over the last two seasons, posting a 7.62 ERA and 1.85 WHIP over 13 innings.
Nov 20, 2020
Cast off 40-man roster
Speier was designated for assignment by the Royals on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Speier made the Royals' Opening Day roster in 2020, but he gave up five runs on nine hits and four walks while striking out six over 5.2 innings. He was optioned to the alternate training site in August and didn't return to the big leagues. His removal from the 40-man roster will make room for several prospects who will now be protected from the Rule 5 draft.
Aug 20, 2020
Sent to alternate training site
Speier was optioned to the alternate training site after Wednesday's doubleheader against the Reds, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old cracked the club's Opening Day roster, and he posted a 7.94 ERA over 5.2 innings. Speier struggled in a similar sample size for the Royals last year in his first taste of big-league action.
Jul 23, 2020
Added to 30-man roster
Speier was added to the Royals' 30-man roster Thursday, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Speier was originally expected to open the season in the minors before a spot opened up for him in Kansas City's bullpen thanks to expanded rosters. The lefty spent most of the 2019 season with Triple-A Omaha, posting a 5.63 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 40 innings. He also made nine big-league appearances, allowing six runs while posting a 10:6 K:BB in 7.1 innings.
Mar 19, 2020
Optioned to Omaha
Speier was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Speier threw just 7.1 big-league innings last season, allowing six runs, so he was always a long shot to break camp with the team. He wasn't great at the Triple-A level, either, posting a5.63 ERA in 40 frames.
