Earns first save
Whitlock picked up the save in Friday's 3-0 victory over the Orioles. He allowed one hit and no walks while striking out three over two scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock notched his first save of 2023 (ninth of his career) Friday night with the two-inning outing. The 27-year-old righty has been solid in a relief role throughout September with a 2.89 ERA, 0.86 ERA and 10:2 K:BB over 9.1 innings. The 33-pitch, multi-inning effort likely ends Whitlock's tough season in which he's thrown 71.2 innings to the tune of a 5.15 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 72:13 K:BB.

Activated from bereavement
Boston activated Whitlock from the bereavement list ahead of Sunday's game against the Orioles, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock was excused from the Red Sox for a week as he dealt with a private family mater. He'll return Sunday to a multi-inning relief role, with Joe Jacques getting optioned out to Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding roster move.
Sep 3, 2023
Goes on bereavement list
The Red Sox placed Whitlock on the bereavement list Sunday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock will sit out at least three games -- and no more than seven -- as he tends to more important matters. Brennan Bernardino was activated from the COVID-19 IL in a corresponding move.
Aug 24, 2023
Works around traffic
Whitlock allowed two hits and a walk while striking out one over two scoreless innings in Wednesday's 7-5 extra-inning win over Houston.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock had traffic on the bases in each of his two innings but was able to work around it. That included a nifty sliding catch of Alex Bregman's popup in foul territory. The play was officially ruled batter interference, because Bregman impeded catcher Connor Wong's ability to make the play. The game also featured Boston closer Kenley Jansen leaving due to a hamstring injury. Pending the severity of that, Whitlock, a trusted setup arm, could be used for save opportunities.
Aug 14, 2023
Grabs win in return
Whitlock (5-3) earned the win in Sunday's 6-3 win over the Tigers. He allowed one unearned run while striking out three over two hitless innings.
ANALYSIS
It was an impressive return for Whitlock, who'd been sidelined since July 4 with a bone bruise in his elbow. The 27-year-old right-hander made 10 starts for the Red Sox earlier this year, though he figures to work out of the bullpen going forward. Overall, Whitlock sports a 5.03 ERA with a 1.27 WHIP and 50:7 K:BB across 53.2 innings this season.
Aug 13, 2023
Activated from IL
The Red Sox activated Whitlock (elbow) from the 15-day injured list Sunday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock has been on the injured list since July 4 with a bone bruise in his right elbow. He holds a 5.23 ERA and 1.32 WHIP through 51.2 innings but looked sharp during his rehab outing, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings while striking out three batters with Triple-A Worcester. Whitlock is expected to join the Sox's bullpen as a multi-inning reliever.
Aug 10, 2023
On track for Sunday
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Whitlock (elbow) is on track to return Sunday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock pitched well in his rehab debut Wednesday with Triple-A Worcester, striking out three of the nine batters he faced over 2.1 scoreless frames. Out since early July due to a bone bruise in his right elbow, the 27-year-old is expected to operate as a multi-inning reliever down the stretch. He could happen into some wins and a save or two in that role.
Aug 9, 2023
Looks sharp in rehab outing
Whitlock (elbow) struck out three and surrendered two hits while walking none in 2.1 scoreless innings in his rehab appearance Wednesday for Triple-A Worcester. He also hit a batter with a pitch.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock pumped in 33 of his 46 pitches for strikes while allowing only three of the nine batters he faced to reach base, with both of the hits he allowed being of the soft-contact variety. The strong rehab outing was exactly what the Red Sox wanted to see from Whitlock, who was making his first appearance since July 2 after missing the past five weeks with a bone bruise in his right elbow. Before being placed on the 15-day injured list, Whitlock had served as a starter for the Red Sox, but he'll be rejoining the club as a multi-inning reliever. Assuming he checks out fine after being evaluated following Wednesday's rehab appearance, Whitlock will likely be activated from the IL ahead of Sunday's game against the Tigers.
Aug 7, 2023
Likely to be activated Sunday
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Whitlock (elbow) is expected to be reinstated from the 15-day injured list Sunday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Before being activated, Whitlock will make just one three-inning rehab appearance, which will come Wednesday at Triple-A Worcester. Cora reiterated Monday that Whitlock will be returning to the Red Sox in a relief role, though the organization isn't necessarily pulling the plug on moving the right-hander back to the rotation in 2024. While the move to the bullpen likely lessens his overall fantasy appeal so long as closer Kenley Jansen is available for save situations, Whitlock could still have some value as a ratio stabilizer in a multi-inning relief role. Over 112.2 career innings as a reliever between the 2021 and 2022 seasons, Whitlock compiled a 2.24 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 22.9 K-BB%.
Aug 6, 2023
Ready for rehab assignment
Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed Sunday that Whitlock (elbow) should begin a minor-league rehab assignment during the upcoming week, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock made it through his live batting practice session Saturday no worse for the wear, so he'll advance to the final phase of his recovery program from the bone bruise in his right elbow. Cora reiterated Sunday that his plan is to deploy Whitlock as a multi-inning reliever once he returns from the 15-day injured list, likely around the middle of August.
Aug 5, 2023
Throws live BP
Whitlock (elbow) threw live batting practice Saturday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
It was previously reported the 27-year-old could begin a rehab assignment this weekend, but the Red Sox instead opted for live batting practice before reevaluating. If Whitlock checks out fine Sunday, he could begin a rehab stint within the next week.
Aug 4, 2023
Expected to return as reliever
Whitlock (elbow) will likely join Boston's bullpen once he comes off the 15-day injured list, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The expectation is that Whitlock will go on a rehab assignment next week and return as a multi-inning reliever, similar to his role for the club in 2021. Whitlock has never topped 78.1 innings in a big-league season, and may fall shy of that mark again this year (sitting on 51.2 innings). Meanwhile, Tanner Houck (face) is expected to get stretched out and return as a starting pitcher.
Aug 2, 2023
Nearing rehab assignment
Whitlock (elbow) could begin a rehab assignment Sunday with Triple-A Worcester, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock is on about the same trajectory as Tanner Houck (face), who is scheduled to begin a rehab stint with Worcester on Saturday. One of the two could return to the Red Sox in more of a piggyback role rather than a locked-in rotation spot, though there's nothing official yet on that front. Whitlock has been limited to 51.2 major-league innings (10 starts) this season because of elbow trouble.
Aug 1, 2023
Scheduled for bullpen Tuesday
Whitlock (elbow) will throw an up-and-down bullpen session Tuesday, Chad Jennings of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Both Whitlock and Tanner Houck (face) will throw bullpens Tuesday ahead of a rehab assignment. Each hurler has experience in the rotation and bullpen, and it's unclear which role the two pitchers will occupy going forward. This is the second time in 2023 that Whitlock has been shelved with elbow woes.
Jul 26, 2023
Team to discuss role
The Red Sox will discuss Wednesday which role Whitlock (elbow) fills upon his return, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Alex Cora said he would prefer to have Whitlock back "as soon as possible," which would point to a relief role. However, the skipper also pointed out that the team is in need of rotation help. The decision could boil down to what, if any, kind of pitching help the Red Sox acquired at the trade deadline. Whitlock has been out since early July with a bone bruise in his right elbow.
Jul 18, 2023
Resumes throwing
Whitlock (elbow) played catch Monday, Mike Monaco of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock reportedly felt "great" after throwing for the first time since he landed on the injured list July 4. He still has a long way to go in his rehab process, but it's a good sign to see him trending upward. Whitlock put up a 5.23 ERA and 1.32 WHIP through 51.2 frames before suffering a bone bruise in his right elbow.
Jul 14, 2023
Still not throwing
Whitlock (elbow) hasn't yet resumed throwing, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock landed on the injured list July 4 with a bone bruise in his right elbow and doesn't appear to be on track for a return soon. He's slated for bullpen sessions Monday and Tuesday, after which a clearer picture regarding his return timeline should emerge.
Jul 4, 2023
Has elbow bone bruise
Whitlock has been diagnosed with a bone bruise in his right elbow, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock was officially placed on the injured list Tuesday and will be re-assessed next week. The diagnosis is a positive thing, all things considered, as he has appeared to avoid a major injury. A clearer picture regarding a timetable for Whitlock should be available next week.
Jul 4, 2023
Officially placed on injured list
Whitlock was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with right elbow inflammation, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock suffered the injury during Sunday's start against the Blue Jays, but the good news is an MRI didn't reveal any structural damage. It remains unclear at this point how much time the right-hander might miss, however. He'll be eligible for activation on July 18.
Jul 3, 2023
Bound for IL but injury not serious
Whitlock is expected to be placed on the 15-day injured list, but his right elbow injury isn't considered serious, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock had to be removed from Sunday's start against the Blue Jays due to tightness in his pitching elbow. While the results of an MRI have not yet been revealed, McAdam hears that the injury "is not being considered a major setback." Theoretically, Whitlock could miss only one start with the All-Star break coming up, although it's not clear at this point whether he will be ready to go when his 15 days are up or close to it. The good news is that it appears he's avoided a long-term injury.
Jul 2, 2023
Heading for MRI
Manager Alex Cora said after Sunday's win over the Blue Jays that Whitlock (elbow) will undergo an MRI on Monday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander lasted just one frame Sunday before being lifted due to right elbow tightness, which Cora indicated is presenting similarly to the elbow injury that kept him on the IL for most of May. It remains to be seen whether the 26-year-old will require a trip to the shelf this time around, but the Red Sox could play it safe given he's scheduled for just one more start before the All-Star break.
Jul 2, 2023
Day ends early with elbow injury
Whitlock was removed after one inning during his start Sunday against the Blue Jays due to right elbow tightness, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. He struck out a batter and gave up a solo home run before departing the contest.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox will likely put Whitlock through a number of tests -- and possibly an MRI -- to confirm the severity of his injury, but given the nature of his initial diagnosis, the right-hander may face an uphill battle to make his final turn through the rotation before the All-Star break. With Tanner Houck (face) and Chris Sale (shoulder) both likely to be sidelined until August, Whitlock's injury only further depletes Boston's starting pitching depth.
Jun 28, 2023
Hammered by Miami
Whitlock (4-3) took the loss in Tuesday's 10-1 rout at the hands of the Marlins, surrendering six runs on 11 hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out seven without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
While the whiffs did salvage his fantasy line to some extent, Whitlock was hit hard when he was in the strike zone and served up long balls to Bryan De La Cruz and Jean Segura, who had a combined nine homers on the season coming into the contest. The rough night snapped a three-game quality start streak for the right-hander, and Whitlock now has a 4.67 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 35:4 K:BB through 34.2 innings over six outings since returning to the rotation in late May. He'll look to bounce back in his next start, likely to come this weekend in Toronto.
Jun 22, 2023
Goes seven frames in no-decision
Whitlock did not factor in the decision against Minnesota on Wednesday, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out six batters over seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock was efficient in the outing, throwing 88 pitches (60 for a strike) in his second straight seven-inning start. He racked up an impressive 16 swinging strikes, though they led to a modest six punchouts. Since a rough outing against Tampa Bay on June 3, Whitlock has rebounded by posting a 3.10 ERA and 19:2 K:BB over 20.1 innings across his subsequent three starts. His next appearance tentatively lines up to come at home against Miami.
Jun 15, 2023
Fans seven in fourth win
Whitlock (4-2) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk over seven innings in a 6-3 victory over the Rockies. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The seven Ks were a season high for the right-hander, although he's made only seven starts so far due to injuries. Whitlock dominated with 18 swinging strikes (plus 18 called strikes) among his 92 pitches, and more remarkably he missed the strike zone with only 20 of his pitches. He'll take a 4.38 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 33:7 K:BB through 39 innings into his next outing, likely to come early next week in Minnesota.
Jun 10, 2023
Dominant in win Friday
Whitlock (3-2) earned the win Friday, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk over 6.1 innings against the Yankees. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock turned in his best performance of the year thus far, working into the seventh inning before being pulled after 88 pitches. Whitlock produced an impressive 18 swinging strikes on the night, while his only blemish came on a solo home run in the sixth inning. If the young hurler can manage to stay healthy, he will remain an integral part of the Red Sox rotation for the remainder of the season with Corey Kluber having been relegated to the bullpen.
Jun 4, 2023
Escapes with no-decision Saturday
Whitlock didn't factor into the decision in an 8-5 win over the Rays in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Tampa Bay jumped on the right-hander for three runs in the second inning, and Whitlock exited in line for his third loss before Boston rallied for six runs in the sixth. The 26-year-old has made only five starts this season due to hip and elbow injuries, and he's lasted more than five innings just once, making him a risky fantasy play until he begins to show some consistency. Whitlock will take a 5.61 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 20:5 K:BB through 25.2 innings into his next outing, which is likely to come next week in Cleveland.
Jun 3, 2023
Starting first of twinbill
Whitlock is the scheduled starter for the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rays, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock was scheduled to start Friday, but the game was rained out. The right-hander will start the afternoon game, which begins 1:10 PM.
Jun 2, 2023
Start postponed due to weather
Whitlock's scheduled start against the Rays on Friday has been postponed due to inclement weather.
ANALYSIS
The game has been rescheduled for Monday at 4:05 p.m. ET. Both Tampa Bay and Boston had scheduled off-days for that contest, so it becomes a Saturday-Monday series rather than Friday-Sunday as scheduled. Garrett Whitlock and Tyler Glasnow will have their starts moved back a date, and there likely won't be a change to either team's rotation.
May 28, 2023
Earns victory in return
Whitlock (2-2) picked up the win against Arizona on Saturday, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four batters over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock made his first appearance in over a month after dealing with a right elbow injury and making two minor-league rehab starts. The 26-year-old took on what amounted to essentially a full workload, tossing 92 pitches (58 strikes) over five frames. Whitlock's pitch count was that high largely because Arizona fouled off 21 pitches against him, but he was in control after allowing a solo homer in the first inning, at one point retiring 12 straight batters. He should remain in the rotation moving forward with Corey Kluber recently being moved to the bullpen.
May 27, 2023
Officially reinstated from IL
Whitlock (elbow) was activated from the 15-day injured list and will start Saturday against the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock will join the Red Sox in Arizona and make his first major-league start since being placed on the 15-day IL on April 28 with right elbow ulnar neuritis. The 26-year-old allowed one run on nine hits and a walk while striking out eight batters over 8.2 innings in two starts with Triple-A Worcester during his rehab assignment. In three outings with Boston this year, Whitlock has produced a 6.19 ERA and 1.38 WHIP with a deflated 6.2 K/9 ratio, which is far below his career average of 9.7 from his first two seasons. To make room on the major-league roster for Whitlock, left-hander Brennan Bernardino was optioned to Triple-A on Friday.
May 26, 2023
Confirmed for start Saturday
Whitlock will start Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock will make a return to the rotation after missing over a month with ulnar neuritis in his right forearm. The right-hander has struggled to a 6.19 ERA over his three starts in 2023, but his previous success suggests that he can be an effective fantasy option in the coming months. There is some risk that comes with starting him in his first outing back, but there's plenty of reward potential that comes with it.
May 21, 2023
Should return from IL next weekend
Manager Alex Cora said Sunday "there's a good chance" Whitlock (elbow) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start next Sunday against the Diamondbacks, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old made his second rehab start with Triple-A Worcester on Sunday and threw 79 pitches across 4.2 scoreless frames, lining him up to rejoin the big-league rotation next weekend in Arizona. Whitlock is nearly built up to a full starter's workload, so any workload limitations in his first start back with the Red Sox should be minor.
May 21, 2023
Tinkers with changeup
The Red Sox identified an issue with Whitlock's (elbow) changeup, and the pitcher has been able to work on it during his rehab, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock's changeup was a big pitch for him during his rookie 2021 season. The offering averaged 83.1 mph and opponents went 10-for-54 (.185) with one home run and one double against it. This year, the pitch is averaging 84.9 mph and opponents are 8-for-20 (.400) with two home runs and three doubles. "We noticed [the increased velocity] in Milwaukee before [the injury]. We were talking about it. And we were able to make adjustments. Obviously he had time to work on it. And he felt really, really good about the changeup in the last [rehab start]." Whitlock will make his final rehab start Sunday and it expected to slot into the rotation this coming weekend against the Diamondbacks.
May 20, 2023
Will be activated next weekend
Whitlock (elbow) will be activated off the 15-day injured list for Boston's series next weekend against the Diamondbacks, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock is starting Sunday for Triple-A Worcester to conclude his rehab assignment, and then the right-hander will join the team in Anaheim before being activated against the D-Backs; likely Saturday for a start against Arizona. Whitlock struggled to a 6.19 ERA before being placed on the injured list with elbow ulnar neuritis, but he's had plenty of success in the past, and the 26-year-old offers a chance for fantasy success when he's on the mound.
May 20, 2023
Set for another rehab start
Whitlock (elbow) will make a second rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock was impressive his first time out for the WooSox, working four innings and throwing 49 pitches. He could be activated in the days following Sunday's start. The Red Sox are currently on the road, and if Whitlock is activated next week, his return to Boston's rotation could come Friday in Arizona.
May 17, 2023
Strong rehab start
Whitlock (elbow) allowed one run on five hits and struck out four over four innings for Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock, who made the first of at least two rehab starts for the WooSox, didn't walk a batter and threw 49 pitches (35 strikes). Pending the outcome of his next start, Whitlock could rejoin the Red Sox next week, at which point manager Alex Cora will have a decision to make. It's presumed Whitlock will enter the starting rotation, but which of the current six starters will move to the bullpen?
May 13, 2023
Making at least two rehab starts
Whitlock (elbow) will make at least two rehab starts before the Red Sox decide whether or not to activate him from the injured list, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock was hoping to a minimum length stay when he hit the injured list with ulnar neuritis in late April, but he'll need up missing something close to a month at minimum. He's scheduled for starts Tuesday and next Sunday, which means he'd be on schedule to return May 26 against the Diamondbacks.
May 12, 2023
Cleared for rehab assignment
Whitlock (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He might get an additional rehab start after that, as well, which could set him up to rejoin the Red Sox later on this month. Whitlock is working his way back from right elbow ulnar neuritis.
May 10, 2023
Nearing rehab assignment
Whitlock (elbow) is expected to begin a rehab assignment next Tuesday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
It could be a one-start stint on the farm for Whitlock, who was placed on the injured list April 28 with right elbow ulnar neuritis. He got through a bullpen session Monday without issue and is scheduled to throw a three-inning simulated game Thursday at Fenway Park. The timeline calls for him to return during Boston's next road trip, which begins May 19.
May 9, 2023
Throws bullpen Monday
Whitlock (elbow) threw a bullpen session in Atlanta on Monday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Red Sox manager Alex Cora is still not ready to put a timetable on when Whitlock could return, and he told reporters Monday that they'll see how he's progressing. The right-hander was placed on the injured list with right elbow ulnar neuritis, and while it was originally hopeful that Whitlock could return from the injured list with a minimum stint, it does seem likely that this won't be a long-term injury.
May 3, 2023
Minimum IL stay possible
Whitlock (elbow) could return after a minimum stay on the injured list, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock has been cleared to resume throwing as he makes a swift recovery from right elbow ulnar neuritis. He is eligible for activation from the injured list on May 9 and it sounds like he could return that day or shortly after.
May 3, 2023
No nerve symptoms in exam
Whitlock's follow-up appointment with a doctor on Tuesday revealed no ulnar nerve symptoms during the exam, and he was able to throw 20 pitches from 45 feet away afterwards, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It's great news for Whitlock, who told reporters after his throwing session that it felt "good to get back on track and get things going again." The Red Sox are hopeful that the right-hander will only miss a couple of starts while dealing with elbow ulnar neuritis, and while it's far from a guarantee the positive prognosis does seem to bode well for those chances.
May 2, 2023
Undergoing more testing
Whitlock (elbow) will undergo more testing Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock was initially diagnosed with right elbow ulnar neuritis, but he will be looked at further to rule out any additional issues. The hope had been that the right-hander could make it back after missing just two starts, but that's very tentative.
Apr 28, 2023
Hopes to miss just two starts
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Friday that the team is hopeful Whitlock (elbow) will miss just two starts, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock landed on the injured list Friday with right elbow ulnar neuritis, although he's set to undergo more testing to rule out any additional issues. A return in a couple weeks would be a best-case scenario for the right-hander. Brayan Bello is taking Whitlock's spot in Boston's rotation.
Apr 28, 2023
Placed on 15-day IL
Whitlock (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday with right elbow ulnar neuritis, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander last pitched Saturday, surrendering five run over four innings against the Brewers. The move to the IL is retroactive to April 25 (Tuesday), so if he can make it back in the minimum amount of days, it'll be less than 15 days from now. That being said, considering it's an elbow injury on his throwing arm, it's hard to predict any sort of timetable for Whitlock's return. In the meantime, Brayan Bello was recalled from Triple-A Worcester and will potentially replace Whitlock in the Red Sox rotation, starting with Whitlock's next scheduled start Saturday versus Cleveland.
Apr 22, 2023
Struggles in loss
Whitlock (1-2) took the loss Saturday, allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk over four innings against the Brewers. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock was shelled Saturday and only picked up one strikeout. Whitlock has had an inconsistent start to 2023, with two starts allowing five runs and one start going seven innings and conceding just a single run. The 26-year-old has a 6.19 ERA in 16 innings this season.
Apr 16, 2023
Seven strong innings in win
Whitlock (1-1) earned the win Sunday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over seven innings in a 2-1 win over the Angels. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock's lone blemish came in the second inning on a leadoff double by Anthony Rendon and a two-out, RBI single by Brandon Drury. Aside from that, the young right-hander was superb through seven innings and earned his first win of the season. Whitlock was knocked around in his season debut, but he got back on track Sunday and will look to build off his strong performance during his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for the finale of a three-game set in Baltimore.
Apr 12, 2023
Rough debut against Rays
Whitlock (0-1) took the loss Tuesday as Boston was steamrolled 7-2 by Tampa Bay, coughing up five runs on eight hits -- including three home runs -- over five innings. He struck out five without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
Making his season debut after completing his recovery from hip surgery last September, Whitlock ran into the buzzsaw known as the undefeated Rays. The 26-year-old righty tossed 62 of 85 pitches for strikes and showed good control, but his command may not be quite there yet as Isaac Paredes, Yandy Diaz and Brandon Lowe all took him deep in the fourth and fifth innings. Whitlock will look to rebound in his next outing, likely to come this weekend at home against the Angels.
Apr 11, 2023
Activated for season debut
Whitlock was activated from the 15-day injured list by the Red Sox on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock is set to make his season debut Tuesday as he attempts to cool off the red-hot Rays. The right-hander pitched well on his rehab assignment, allowing just two runs with a 14:2 K:BB over 10 innings. Whitlock held a 4.15 ERA in nine starts last season versus a 2.75 ERA in 22 relief appearances.
Apr 8, 2023
Making season debut Tuesday
Whitlock (hip) was in the Red Sox's clubhouse Saturday and said he's scheduled to pitch Tuesday against the Rays, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old made his second minor-league rehab start Thursday and allowed just one run on one hit with eight strikeouts and one walk over six innings. Whitlock began the season on the shelf while finishing up his rehab from last September's hip surgery, but he's poised to make his season debut Tuesday in Tampa Bay.
Apr 6, 2023
Sharp in rehab outing
Whitlock (hip) allowed one earned run on one hit and one walk while striking out eight and walking one across six innings in a rehab outing with Double-A Portland on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock is still recovering from surgery on his hip that he underwent last September, but he is expected to make his season debut Tuesday at Tampa Bay. He's been sharp in two rehab appearances, completing 10 innings while allowing only two earned runs and punching out 14 between Boston's two highest minor-league affiliates. It's unclear if he'll be on a pitch count in his initial starts, but his ability to pitch deep into Thursday's outing is a positive sign.
Apr 5, 2023
Likely to debut Tuesday
Whitlock (hip) is likely to make his season debut Tuesday against the Rays, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock will make another rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Thursday, and assuming that outing goes well he'll make his season debut in St. Petersburg against the Rays. The right-hander underwent hip surgery in the offseason and the Red Sox have understandably been cautious in his recovery process. Managers should keep in mind that Whitlock may not be able to go deep in early outings once back, but his stuff is good enough to provide relevance relatively quickly.
Apr 2, 2023
Next start coming Thursday
Whitlock (hip) is scheduled to pitch Thursday for Double-A Portland, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock, who had a successful outing for Triple-A Worcester on Friday , will make at least one more appearance. If there are no setbacks following his start for the Sea Dogs, Whitlock will be activated to join the Red Sox. His season debut will likely occur during Boston's four-game series in Tampa, which begins April 10.
Mar 31, 2023
Allows one over four in Triple-A
Whitlock (hip) allowed one run over four innings in Friday's rehab start for Triple-A Worcester.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock allowed six hits with a walk, and he struck out six. The right-hander is making his way back from hip surgery that he underwent last September, and it's encouraging to see some positive results and a full four frames. Whitlock is expected to make one more start at the Triple-A level, and if everything goes well he'll be back on the bump as soon as April 11 for a start against Tampa Bay.
Mar 31, 2023
Making first rehab start Friday
Whitlock (hip) is scheduled to make a rehab start Friday for Triple-A Worcester, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Though he missed out on a spot on the Red Sox's Opening Day roster while he continues to build back from the right hip surgery he underwent last September, Whitlock will take the hill for the Triple-A club's season opener. Abraham's report doesn't specify what Whitlock's workload will look like in his outing with Worcester, but considering he covered four innings and 63 pitches in a minor-league game at spring training a week ago, the right-hander could push toward the five-inning or 75-pitch range Friday. After Friday, Whitlock is expected to make one more start for Worcester on April 5 before coming off the 15-day injured list and making his Boston debut as soon as April 11 versus the Rays.
Mar 30, 2023
Goes on IL
The Red Sox placed Whitlock (hip) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
While he works his way back to full health following the right hip surgery he underwent last September, Whitlock will open the season on the shelf and miss his first turn through the rotation. Whitlock hasn't hit any snags in his recovery and most recently through a four-inning, 63-pitch outing in a minor-league game at spring training, so he already appears to be on his way to getting fully stretched out. He'll likely make a minor-league rehab start before coming off the IL when he's first eligible April 11 or shortly thereafter.
Mar 25, 2023
Throws four minor-league innings
Whitlock (hip) threw 63 pitches across four innings in a minor-league game Friday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock is set to open the year on the injured list after building up slowly this spring as he recovers from September hip surgery. He's making good progress, however, and is scheduled to start Triple-A Worcester's home opener March 30. Given that he's already up to four innings of work, he should be ready to handle a starter's workload once he's activated off the injured list.
Mar 24, 2023
Making rehab start March 31
Whitlock (hip) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Worcester on March 31, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It will be Wocester's Opening Day. Whitlock is expected to require an additional start after that before rejoining the Red Sox' rotation, setting him up for a return in mid-April. The right-hander is healthy but has simply been brought along slowly following offseason hip surgery.
Mar 23, 2023
Headed for injured list
Whitlock (hip) will begin the season on the 10-day injured list, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock made his first spring training start Monday, but Red Sox manager Alex Cora said the 26-year-old righty will need to make three more starts before he's ready to rejoin Boston's rotation. Those three starts (plus four rest days between each start) put him in line to return by mid-April.
Mar 20, 2023
Needs three more ramp-up starts
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Whitlock, who is scheduled to pitch in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Pirates, will likely require three more starts to build up before he's ready to join the big-league rotation, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Based on that timeline, Cora confirmed that Whitlock won't be in consideration for making the Red Sox's fifth start of the regular season, likely paving the way for Kutter Crawford to break camp as the final member of the team's rotation. Whitlock is scheduled to pitch three innings Monday before covering four innings in his next outing and then five innings in his final two starts prior to coming off the injured list, according to Cora. Assuming he sticks to a normal four-day rest schedule between those outings, Whitlock would be on pace to be activated as soon as April 9.
Mar 19, 2023
Will start Monday
Whitlock (hip) will start Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Pirates, Mac Cerullo of The North Andover Eagle-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock will make his second appearance of the spring as he works his way back from the hip surgery that has sidelined him for the majority of the exhibition season. The 26-year-old right-hander is expected to open the year on the injured list, but the fact he's making starts in spring training gives him a great chance of making that a short stint assuming there are no setbacks over the final two weeks.
Mar 16, 2023
Makes spring debut
Whitlock (hip) walked one and struck out three over two scoreless relief innings in Wednesday's spring start against Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock looked impressive in his spring debut following rehab from hip surgery. While he pitched in relief Wednesday, following five strong innings from Corey Kluber, the right-hander is expected to be a starter in 2023. Whitlock will not be ready for the opening series and could miss up to two April starts, but the positives of his Grapefruit League debut outweigh a couple of missed cold-weather starts.
Mar 12, 2023
Throws live BP
Whitlock (hip) threw live batting practice Saturday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Both Whitlock and Brayan Bello (forearm) faced hitters Saturday. Whitlock, who showed no ill effects from the right hip surgery he had last September, threw two innings and worked his pitch count to 46. It was the second live throwing session this week for the right-hander, whose next step will his Grapefruit League debut against the Rays on Wednesday.
Mar 8, 2023
Will throw live BP Saturday
Whitlock (hip) will throw a live BP session Saturday, Mike Monaco of NESN reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock still hasn't participated in fielding drills in the Grapefruit League, but the right-hander has been throwing off the mound, and will face hitters again on Saturday. His status for Opening Day is still very much in doubt, but good showings on Saturday and his upcoming bullpens gives him a chance to return in the early part of April if there are no setbacks.
Mar 4, 2023
May miss Opening Day
Whitlock (hip) may not be game-ready to open the regular season, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock has been throwing off a mound and to hitters, but his recovery from hip surgery has prevented him from participating in fielding drills thus far. The Red Sox are unlikely to rush things with a key piece of their rotation, so Whitlock may begin the season on the shelf while he prepares for his starter's workload.
Mar 2, 2023
To throw live BP Friday
Whitlock (hip) will throw two innings of live batting practice Friday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock hasn't appeared in a Grapefruit League game yet, as the Red Sox are easing him into things as he works his way back from hip surgery. It remains possible that the right-hander will need a stint on the injured list to start the season, but if that happens he is not expected to be sidelined long.
Feb 27, 2023
Status to start year uncertain
Red sox manager Alex Cora told reporters on Monday that Whitlock (hip) is throwing the ball well in the Grapefruit League, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Cora also mentioned that Whitlock is moving well, but that he's still not participating in pitchers' fielding practice (PFPs) just yet. While those are positive developments, the manager was less clear on whether or not the right-hander would be ready for the start of the season. "We've got a plan," Cora said. "We'll see where we're at in the upcoming weeks. If he's ready for opening day he's ready, but if he's not, he's not going to lose too much time." Fantasy managers who are considering Whitlock for the 2023 season will want to pay close attention for updates on his status in the coming days and weeks.
Feb 21, 2023
Eased into fielding drills
Whitlock (hip) is being eased into pitchers' fielding practice during camp, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Going through full fielding drills will be the last thing Whitlock does this spring as he comes back from hip surgery. The good news is he's been throwing regular bullpen sessions and his arm feels on track, so there shouldn't be any question about the pitcher's Opening Day availability. Whitlock is expected to be part of the Red Sox' rotation.
Feb 18, 2023
Throws bullpen Friday
Whitlock (hip) threw a bullpen session Friday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock's versatility has been helpful to Boston that last two seasons, but he's expected to be a full-time starter in 2023. The Red Sox's rotation features several pitchers returning from injury. Depending on how conservative the team is with him, James Paxton (lat) and Chris Sale (wrist), there could be a piggybacking situation at the outset of the season. As a starter in 2022, Whitlock had a 4.15 ERA over 39 innings.
Feb 7, 2023
Already at work in camp
Whitlock (hip) did weight training and ran sprints Tuesday in Red Sox camp, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock arrived early to Red Sox camp in Fort Myers, Florida and appears to be fully recovered from September surgery on his right hip. Assuming there are no setbacks along the way, the 26-year-old should be locked into a spot at the back end of Boston's season-opening starting rotation. He posted a 3.45 ERA and 82:15 K:BB ratio over 78.1 innings (nine starts, 22 relief appearances) during the 2022 campaign.
Jan 20, 2023
On track for return
Whitlock (hip) has begun throwing off the mound, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock is recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his right hip. Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters that he 's on track for an on-time return, and the right-hander is expected to open the season as a member of the Boston rotation.
Nov 25, 2022
Prepping to start
Whitlock (hip) is progressing in his rehab program and indicated Monday he is preparing to open the 2023 season as a starter, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander started nine games last season but has primarily worked as a reliever since he made his MLB debut in 2021. Whitlock has been effective with a 2.73 ERA across 77 outings, and Boston now plans to move him to the rotation to begin next season. The 26-year-old underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right hip in late September and is expected be ready for spring training as he ramps up his throwing program in December.
Sep 26, 2022
Surgery completed
Whitlock underwent successful arthroscopic right hip surgery Monday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
With the Red Sox reporting that Whitlock experienced no complications with his procedure, the expectation is that he'll be back to full strength for spring training. What's less certain for Whitlock is which role he'll fill for the Boston pitching staff in 2023 after he dabbled between starting and working high-leverage relief this season, accruing a 4-2 record and six saves to go with a 3.45 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 82:15 K:BB across 78.1 innings. Expect manager Alex Cora and the Red Sox front office to should shed more light on Whitlock's role heading into the upcoming season at some point over the winter.
Sep 21, 2022
Officially lands on IL
Whitlock (hip) was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock's placement on the injured list was expected since he's been shut down from throwing and will undergo surgery next week to address his right hip impingement. The right-hander is expected to be ready for spring training in 2023, while Connor Seabold was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to start Wednesday against the Reds.
Sep 20, 2022
Needs surgery, hopeful for spring
Whitlcok has been shut down from throwing and will require hip surgery next week, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Abraham, the expectation is that Whitlock will be ready for spring training. He has given up seven runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out 10 in seven innings over his last five appearances. Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican noted that Whitlock has looked uncomfortable walking around all season, so he has probably been pitching at less than 100 percent.
Sep 4, 2022
Credited with shaky hold
Whitlock allowed three runs on four hits while striking out three over two innings to earn a hold in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock followed starter Brayan Bello, who pitched six shutout innings, and cruised through the seventh before adversity struck in the eighth. He was tagged for a single, two home runs and flyout that Alex Verdugo tracked down in front of the bullpen in right field. It was the second consecutive game in which Whitlock allowed three runs and nearly wiped out a stellar pitching effort by a starter. Prior to his last two outings, Whitlock pitched well since returning from a hip injury July 15, including five saves, two holds, a 1.59 ERA and 23 strikeouts over 22.2 innings.
Aug 27, 2022
Locks down save
Whitlock struck out one in a perfect inning and earned a save over Tampa Bay on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock needed just eight pitches to roll through the Rays in order. It was his sixth save of the year and third in his last four appearances. The 26-year-old now owns a 2.90 ERA with a 72:13 K:BB through 71.1 innings this season. Whitlock should continue seeing a large portion of Boston's save opportunities while Tanner Houck (back) is out.
Aug 21, 2022
Picks up save
Whitlock picked up the save against the Orioles on Saturday, allowing one run on two hits while striking out two and walking none over two innings.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock threw 18 of 25 pitches for strikes in what turned out to be a two-inning save Saturday. This was the second game in a row that Whitlock was called upon for the save. The righty has been reliable in relief, blowing one save on Apr. 8 in his first appearance of the year. Whitlock now has five saves on the season and a 3.03 ERA.
Aug 14, 2022
Shuts the door Sunday
Whitlock picked up the save Sunday against the Yankees. He allowed zero runs on zero hits and zero walks while striking out two over one inning.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock was perfect Sunday, striking out Benintendi and Judge before getting Donaldson to ground out to record his third save on the season. With Tanner Houck injured, Whitlock has split save opportunities with John Schreiber. Whitlock has a strong 2.98 ERA and 0.98 WHIP and has only blown one save opportunity in 23 appearances this season, but Schreiber has also been great. Expect the two relievers to continue splitting opportunities as long as Houck is sidelined.
Aug 13, 2022
Earns win in relief
Whitlock (3-2) pitched the final two innings of Friday's 10-inning win over the Yankees, striking out three and walking one while not allowing a hit or a run.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock entered with the Red Sox down one in the top of the ninth and retired the side in order. Boston tied the game in the bottom of the inning, and Whitlock remained on the mound to start extras, walking Aaron Judge to start the frame before getting three consecutive outs. Tommy Pham's walkoff single in the bottom of the 10th gave Whitlock and the Red Sox a win. It was his sixth straight multi-inning outing.
Jul 29, 2022
Records another multi-inning save
Whitlock earned the save over the Guardians on Thursday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out one batter over two innings.
ANALYSIS
Kutter Crawford and Jake Diekman combined to limit Cleveland to one run over seven innings, and Whitlock took over in the eighth with Boston holding a 4-1 lead. The right-hander allowed a run in that frame but pitched a scoreless ninth to finish off the save. Whitlock has picked up a two-inning save in each of his past two appearances, and given the ineffectiveness at the back end of Boston's bullpen this season, he could be emerging as the team's primary closer.
Jul 25, 2022
Notches two-inning save
Whitlock struck out two batters over two scoreless innings and earned a save over the Guardians on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock fired 15 of 19 pitches for strikes and had no trouble mowing down Cleveland's lineup. It was his second save of the year and first since April 19. In four appearances since returning from the injured list, Whitlock has punched out nine batters over six shutout frames. It's unclear how Boston plans to use its bullpen moving forward as John Schreiber earned the win and Tanner Houck did not pitch Monday.
Jul 16, 2022
Works two scoreless innings
Whitlock struck out three over two scoreless innings in Friday's 5-4 extra-innings win over the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock, making his first appearance after being activated off the injured list, held Boston's one-run lead by setting down the side in order over the seventh and eighth innings. He had been a starter before hitting the IL, but Whitlock will serve a multi-inning relief role that could involve save opportunities. Closer Tanner Houck eventually blew the save Friday, but he's pitched well otherwise while stabilizing Boston's ninth-inning relief issues.
Jul 15, 2022
Reinstated from injured list
Whitlock (hip) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Friday.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock served mainly as a starter for the Red Sox early in the season, posting a 3.51 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 48.2 innings over 13 appearances (nine starts). However, he served as a multi-inning reliever during his rehab assignment and allowed two runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out four in four innings over two appearances. The right-hander will pitch out of the bullpen for Boston following his activation, which will hinder his fantasy value since he isn't expected to be a regular part of the team's ninth-inning mix. Whitlock will be one of the top options to fill in as a starter if needed.
Jul 12, 2022
Trending toward Friday return
Manager Alex Cora said the Red Sox will likely activate Whitlock (hip) from the 15-day injured list prior to Friday's series opener with the Yankees, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock will be making his return to the Red Sox as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen, even though he enjoyed a good deal of success in his nine starts for Boston prior to landing on the IL on June 10 with right hip inflammation. Though the Red Sox view Whitlock as a starter over the long haul, the organization is hopeful that the bullpen role will maximize the right-hander's effectiveness and preserve his overall health. Since he's not expected to regularly factor into the equation for saves with Tanner Houck and John Schreiber having seemingly established themselves as the preferred options at the back end of the bullpen, Whitlock's fantasy value could take a big hit as he steps into a relief role, though he should still have some appeal as a ratio stabilizer. Whitlock is scheduled to make a two-inning rehab appearance Tuesday for Double-A Portland before the Red Sox formally activate him for the weekend series with the Yankees.
Jul 11, 2022
Next rehab outing coming Tuesday
Whitlock (hip) is scheduled to make a rehab appearance with Double-A Portland on Tuesday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The upcoming outing will mark Whitlock's second rehab appearance, after he previously tossed two innings for Triple-A Worcester on Friday and struck out three while giving up two earned runs on six hits and no walks. He'll likely be on tap for another multi-inning appearance Tuesday, and if all goes well, Whitlock should rejoin the Red Sox thereafter. After making nine starts prior to landing on the injured list, Whitlock is set to serve as a high-leverage, multi-inning reliever for Boston upon being activated.
Jul 10, 2022
Another rehab outing likely
Whitlock (hip) is expected to make one more rehab appearance for Triple-A Worcester, likely to be Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock threw two innings for the WooSox on Friday, giving up a pair of runs on six hits while recording three strikeouts. The hip got a workout on the mound and in backing up a few bases, manager Alex Cora joked with reporters. Worcester will be on the road in Norfolk (Va.) this week, and there's a chance Whitlock joins the Red Sox during their series against Tampa Bay after Tuesday's outing.
Jul 9, 2022
Knocked around in rehab opener
Whitlock (hip) allowed two runs on six hits and struck out three over two innings for Triple-A Worcester on Friday. The right-hander made his first rehab appearance after hitting the injured list June 9.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock threw 26 strikes among 34 pitches over the fifth and six innings and wasn't hit particularly hard, per Katie Morrison of MassLive.com; however, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre batters were able to bunch hits together. "They jumped him, really," WooSox manager Chad Tracy said. "That happens in rehab appearances, they know guys are trying to get back on their feet, so they kind of jumped him. Couple soft hits, there were a couple squared up." Most of the damage came in the fifth when both runs scored on four hits; the sixth was cleaner but the RailRaiders managed another two hits. Whitlock is rehabbing for a return to Boston as a multi-inning reliever.
Jul 7, 2022
Rehab appearance coming Friday
Whitlock (hip) is slated to make a 1-to-2-inning rehab appearance for Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Red Sox manager Alex Cora has already said that Whitlock will be deployed out of the bullpen upon returning from the 15-day injured list, so the right-hander may only need one or two appearances in the minors prior to being activated. Tanner Houck and John Schreiber have emerged as the top options at the back end of the bullpen, but Whitlock could still see the occasional save chance while serving as a multi-inning, high-leverage relief arm.
Jul 5, 2022
Faces hitters again
Whitlock (hip) threw a live batting practice session Tuesday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Assuming Whitlock's inflamed right hip isn't bothering him too much coming out of the workout, he could be cleared to report to one of the Red Sox's minor-league affiliates this weekend to head out on a rehab assignment. Since manager Alex Cora has already confirmed that Whitlock will pitch out of the bullpen once activated from the 15-day injured list, the 26-year-old right-hander will likely only need one or two rehab appearances in the minors to get fully ramped up. Whitlock should operate as a multi-inning, high-leverage reliever for Boston, though both Tanner Houck and John Schreiber could rank ahead of him in the pecking order for save opportunities.
Jul 3, 2022
Headed to bullpen
Boston manager Alex Cora confirmed Whitlock (hip) will pitch out of the bullpen when he's activated off the injured list, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Cora said earlier that the club was considering having Whitlock -- who has been in the starting rotation since April 23 -- move to the bullpen and confirmed that decision Saturday. The manager added that Whitlock will be used much as he was in 2021, when he pitched a multi-inning relief role in a variety of situations. The right-hander threw a bullpen session Saturday and could face batters this coming week and begin a rehabilitation assignment. The rehab should be shorter now that Whitlock does not need to be built up to a starter's workload. Cora added that Rich Hill's knee injury, which landed him on the injured list, will not change the team's plans for Whitlock. Boston will use a combination of Josh Winckowski, Connor Seabold and Kutter Crawford to plug any rotation holes.
Jun 29, 2022
May move to bullpen
Manager Alex Cora said Wednesday the Red Sox are considering utilizing Whitlock (hip) out of the bullpen upon his return from the 15-day injured list, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old landed on the injured list June 10 with right hip inflammation and is nearing a minor-league rehab assignment, but it appears Boston is leaning toward using him as a reliever once healthy. Whitlock made his first four appearances of the season out of the bullpen before moving into the rotation, and he has a 4.15 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 38:9 K:BB across 39 innings as a starter.
Jun 28, 2022
Likely needs rehab assignment
Whitlock (hip) will likely need a rehab assignment following Friday's throwing session, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
He will face live hitters and go through fielding drills Friday, but Speier estimates Whitlock will still require a rehab assignment after that. Assuming he goes out on a rehab assignment after this weekend, Whitlock could return to make one or two starts before the All-Star break.
Jun 27, 2022
Slated to face hitters Friday
Whitlock (hip) will face live hitters and go through fielding drills Friday in Chicago, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock resumed facing hitters last week, but he slowed down his recovery process over the weekend since he was still experiencing pain. A better idea of the right-hander's return timetable should be revealed based on how he feels following Friday's throwing sessions.
Jun 24, 2022
Won't start versus Blue Jays
Whitlock (hip) won't be activated from the 15-day injured list to start during the upcoming three-game series against the Blue Jays, which begins Monday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old threw a simulated game Tuesday, but his progress from the hip injury has slow over the past couple days. Whitlock hasn't suffered a setback, per Abraham, though manager Alex Cora said the right-hander "wasn't feeling good" or "moving well." Whitlock recently appeared to be on the cusp of his return from the injured list, but his outlook for the near future is now a bit more uncertain.
Jun 22, 2022
Tosses sim game, won't start this week
Whitlock (hip) threw a simulated game Tuesday, but the Red Sox won't have him start during their three-game series in Cleveland this weekend, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After completing a 20-pitch bullpen session last Saturday, Whitlock took another step forward three days later by facing hitters. When Whitlock was placed on the 15-day injured list June 10 with an inflamed right hip, the Red Sox had hope that he would be ready to go in the minimum amount of time, but he looks like he'll need at least a few additional days to get stretched back out. Whitlock is eligible to return this weekend, but the Red Sox have already announced Nick Pivetta, Josh Winckowksi and Rich Hill as their three starters for the Cleveland series. Whitlock will likely be re-evaluated within the next day or two before the Red Sox decide if he'll be ready to rejoin the big club next week or if he'll first require a rehab start in the minors.
Jun 21, 2022
Threw bullpen Saturday
Whitlock (hip) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session Saturday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock will throw another session Tuesday, which is expected to be longer than Saturday's bullpen. "He's trending in the right direction," Boston manager Alex Cora said. "At one point on the road trip, he'll be with us." Whitlock could be activated and start during the series in Cleveland beginning Thursday or during next week's series in Toronto.
Jun 19, 2022
Bullpen session on tap
Whitlock (hip) is scheduled for a bullpen session Tuesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock resumed playing catch Friday and will quickly return to the mound after landing on the injured list June 10 with right hip inflammation. If all goes well Tuesday, the 26-year-old could rejoin Boston's starting rotation as early as the weekend.
Jun 17, 2022
Resumes playing catch
Manager Alex Cora said Friday that Whitlock (hip) has resumed playing catch, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock has been on the injured list for a week, and the Red Sox are hopeful that he'll be able to rejoin the rotation after missing the minimum of 15 days. The right-hander is eligible to be reinstated as early as June 24.
Jun 14, 2022
May miss just 15 days
Whitlock is doing well in his recovery from right hip inflammation and may miss the minimum 15 days, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock hit the injured list Friday, leaving him eligible to return June 24. It looks like he'll have the chance to do so, though Nathan Eovaldi (back) will also be eligible to return that day, so it's likely at least one of them waits an additional day.
Jun 10, 2022
Placed on injured list
Whitlock was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday due to right hip inflammation, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock's scheduled start for Saturday against the Mariners was up in the air, and he'll ultimately require an IL stint after being diagnosed with hip inflammation. Right-hander Phillips Valdez was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to take his place on the active roster, but it's not yet clear who will take Whitlock's place in the rotation. Although manager Alex Cora recently downplayed the severity of Whitlock's injury, a timetable for his return hasn't yet been revealed.
Jun 10, 2022
Sunday's start in question
Whitlock is questionable to make his scheduled start Sunday against Seattle due to his hip injury, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Whitlock wasn't expected to miss any time due to his hip tightness, but the team is working on contingency plans in case the right-hander is unable to take the mound Sunday. Even if Whitlock doesn't start Sunday, it doesn't seem like the Red Sox are particularly concerned that his hip injury is a long-term issue.
Jun 10, 2022
Dealing with hip tightness
Boston manager Alex Cora said Whitlock is dealing with hip tightness, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Cora noticed Whitlock favoring one leg during a start June 1, and the right-hander was roughed up by the Angels in his subsequent start. The manager indicated the condition is "nothing serious," while the pitcher said it's not bothering him when he pitches. "But obviously we have to take care of him," Cora said. "Maybe we can make adjustments as far as like his conditioning and all that. Instead of running outside, let's do it on the treadmill." Cora added that Whitlock will be ready for his next start, which is slated for Sunday in Seattle.
Jun 8, 2022
Posts no-decision versus Angels
Whitlock allowed four runs on six hits and no walks while striking out five in four innings versus the Angels on Tuesday. He didn't factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock had some trouble with Mike Trout in particular, as the Angels' star outfielder hit a two-run home run and a double before exiting the game with groin tightness. Whitlock didn't do that well to settle in, and he was done after 71 pitches (47 strikes) in a shaky outing. The right-hander now has a 3.51 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 49:11 K:BB across 48.2 innings in 13 appearances (nine starts). He remains on a 2-1 record heading into his next start this weekend in Seattle.
Jun 2, 2022
Six scoreless in win
Whitlock (2-1) earned the win Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits and zero walks over six innings against the Reds. He struck out zero.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock was dominant and scattered five singles across six innings as he cruised to his second win of the season. However, he failed to record a strikeout for the first time as a starter this year, which limited his overall fantasy output. Regardless, the youngster still sports a 3.02 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP across eight starts and 44.2 total innings. His next start is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday's road matchup against the Angels.

Misses out on victory
Whitlock didn't factor in the decision during Friday's 12-8 loss to the Orioles after giving up two runs on five hits over six innings. He had four strikeouts and one walk.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old served up a two-run homer to Anthony Santander during the fourth inning but otherwise kept Baltimore off the board, and he exited with Boston holding an 8-2 lead. However, the Red Sox bullpen completely imploded, preventing Whitlock from earning his first win since April 12. The right-hander continues to pitch well as a member of the starting rotation and has a 3.49 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 44:11 K:BB across 38.2 innings this season.
May 22, 2022
Early exit against M's
Whitlock didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 6-5 win over the Mariners, coughing up five runs on 10 hits over three innings. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Seattle jumped on the right-hander for four runs in the top of the first inning, and Whitlock eventually needed 71 pitches (48 strikes) to record nine outs before getting the hook. The 25-year-old has yet to complete more than five innings in a start, and he's only managed to get that far twice in six starts since moving into the rotation. Whitlock has a 3.58 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 40:10 K:BB through 32.2 innings on the season, but his 4.70 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in the rotation suggest another role change could be on the horizon.
May 17, 2022
No-decision against Houston
Whitlock didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 6-3 win over the Astros, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over five-plus innings. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander kept Houston off the board for four frames before serving up a solo shot to Chas McCormick to lead off the fifth. Whitlock has yet to work more than five innings in any outing since moving into the rotation, but he's posted a 3.15 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 26:8 K:BB through 20 innings over his five starts.
May 11, 2022
Slated to start Monday
Whitlock will start Monday's game against the Astros, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Although Rich Hill (illness) is expected to return from the COVID-19 injured list this weekend, Whitlock will remain in the starting rotation with an additional day of rest prior to his next outing. While Whitlock initially lined up to start Sunday in Texas, he'll be pushed back to start Monday's series opener at home against the Astros. Following a strong start to the season, the right-hander has allowed five runs in eight innings over his last two outings, although he's struck out 14 during that time.
May 11, 2022
Ineffective versus Atlanta
Whitlock tossed three innings, giving up three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out five in Tuesday's win over the Braves. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock didn't have full command of the strike zone Tuesday, walking a season-high four batters while throwing 48 of his 82 pitches for strikes. Marcell Ozuna ripped a sacrifice fly against him in the bottom of the third inning before Travis d'Arnaud launched a two-run homer later in the frame. The 25-year-old has been alternating between long relief and the starting rotation this season, drawing a start in each of his last three outings, surrendering five runs in 11 innings over that stretch. Whitlock still owns a 2.19 ERA and 0.93 WHIP with 34 strikeouts over 24.2 innings this year. It is yet to be seen if he will make another start in the rotation or if Rich Hill (illness) will return from the COVID-19 injured list ahead of his next turn in the rotation.
May 6, 2022
Continuing in rotation role
Whitlock's role in the rotation remains safe for now with Rich Hill heading to the COVID-19 injured list, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
After opening the year by allowing one run on four hits in 9.2 innings of relief work, Whitlock stepped into the rotation for a trio of successful starts. He's only averaged four innings across those starts, though he reached a season-high five in his latest outing Wednesday against the Angels. Whitlock's 1.25 ERA and 29:4 K:BB on the year will make it tough for Boston to send him back to the bullpen, though workload concerns could still cause such a move at some point given that he worked exclusively in relief last season.
May 4, 2022
Solid against Angels
Whitlock pitched five innings, giving up two runs on two hits while striking out nine in Wednesday's loss to the Angels. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock held the Angels off the basepaths for 4.1 innings before surrendering a double to Jared Walsh. Just two batters later, Max Stassi launched a two-run homer, tying the game at 2-2. The five innings pitched and nine punchouts were both season-highs for Whitlock. The 25-year-old has been very effective this season, going 1-1 while posting a 1.25 ERA and 0.69 WHIP with 29 strikeouts over 21.2 frames.
Apr 30, 2022
Starting Wednesday
Whitlock will start Wednesday's game against the Angels, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock has been dominant over six appearances (two starts) this season, posting a 0.54 ERA and 0.78 WHIP in 16.2 innings. The right-hander's start against the Blue Jays on Thursday happened since Tanner Houck was on the restricted list due to his vaccination status. However, Whitlock made enough of an impression to draw at least one more start, while Houck will continue to pitch out of the bullpen. Manager Alex Cora didn't commit to Whitlock as a long-term starter and instead said that his role will be determined one turn at a time.
Apr 29, 2022
Records loss in pitching duel
Whitlock (1-1) recorded the loss, allowing four hits, a run and two walks while striking out two over three innings in Thursday's 1-0 loss to the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
The loss can't be blamed on Whitlock, as the game's only run was unearned thanks to an error by Christian Arroyo that allowed Lourdes Gurriel to advance. His subsequent walk to Raimel Tapia moved Gurriel into scoring position. and Kirk's two-out single brought in the run. The Red Sox's bats are ice-cold currently, so although the team's bullpen aptly kept the Blue Jays in check while utilizing five pitchers after Whitlock, run support has been hard to come by recently. Whitlock earned the spot start due to Tanner Houck's (personal) vaccination status, which prohibits him from playing in Canada.
Apr 25, 2022
Officially starting Thursday
Whitlock will start Thursday's game against the Blue Jays, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock made his first start of the season Saturday against the Rays and allowed a hit and no walks while striking out seven in four scoreless innings. He'll step in to make another start during Thursday's series finale in Toronto since Tanner Houck (personal) is on the restricted list for the four-game set.
Apr 24, 2022
Likely to pick up start in Toronto
Whitlock is penciled in to start Thursday's game in Toronto, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox haven't officially confirmed he will get the ball Thursday, but Whitlock is the most logical choice to stick in the rotation since Tanner Houck isn't eligible to make his scheduled turn in Toronto this week due to his vaccination status. Boston had already seemingly prepared for Houck's absence in Toronto by handing Whitlock his first start of the season Saturday, when the 25-year-old right-hander struck out seven and allowed one baserunner over four scoreless frames. He's thus lined up to return to the hill Thursday on the standard four days' rest, and he should be able to bump up his workload a bit from the 48 pitches he tossed against Tampa Bay.
Apr 24, 2022
Fans seven in four innings
Whitlock tossed four scoreless innings against Tampa Bay on Saturday, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out seven.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock was making a spot start after coming out of the bullpen for each of his first four appearances, so he was removed after the fourth inning despite a dominant performance during which he retired the first nine batters he faced and allowed just one hit overall. The right-hander registered 11 swings and misses among his 48 pitches and struck out a season-high seven batters. Whitlock is likely to move back into the bullpen following this start, but his 0.66 ERA, 0.51 WHIP and 18:2 K:BB this season suggests he is capable of thriving in any role.
Apr 22, 2022
Confirmed as Saturday's starter
Whitlock will start Saturday's game against the Rays, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Tanner Houck's decision not to vaccinate himself against COVID-19 has forced the Red Sox to shuffle their rotation around, as he'll be ineligible to cross the border into Canada when the team travels to Toronto next week. Whitlock will make a spot start as part of that shuffling. Exactly how long he'll be able to pitch is not yet clear, though he did make a four-inning relief appearance back on April 12, which suggests he won't be significantly limited Saturday.
Apr 21, 2022
Likely starting Saturday
Whitlock will likely start Saturday's game against the Rays unless he's used in relief Thursday or Friday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock served mainly as a starter in the minors, but his first 50 big-league appearances have come in relief. He's been effective early in 2022, posting a 0.93 ERA and 0.62 WHIP in 9.2 innings while picking up a win and converting one of two save chances. However, the Red Sox are shuffling their rotation ahead of their upcoming road trip to Toronto, so manager Alex Cora said Whitlock will likely make his first major-league start on the road against Tampa Bay on Saturday.
Apr 19, 2022
Picks up first save of 2022
Whitlock secured a save after tossing a perfect ninth inning in Tuesday's victory over the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old produced a one-two-three inning on his way to his first of the 2022 campaign after he blew an opportunity April 8 against the Yankees. Whitlock had only pitched in long relief this year prior to Tuesday, but he now has a 1-0 record with a sparkling 0.93 ERA and 0.62 WHIP while striking out 11 batters over 9.2 innings.
Apr 17, 2022
Finishes gem by Houck
Whitlock allowed two hits and a walk while striking out five over 2.1 scoreless relief innings in Saturday's 4-0 win over Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Red So starter Tanner Houck worked 5.2 innings before turning it over to Matt Strahm and Whitlock. For Whitlock, it was his third multi-inning relief appearance. He's been targeted to follow Rich Hill on days when he starts. Hill is due to start Monday, but it's unclear if how much Whitlock can provide after throwing 30 pitches Saturday.
Apr 12, 2022
Goes deep for win
Whitlock (1-0) allowed one walk and struck out two over four scoreless relief innings to pick up the win in Tuesday's 5-3 victory over Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Boston manager Alex Cora's decision to pitch Whitlock on top of 42-year-old, left-handed starter Rich Hill worked as planned. Pairing these two pitchers every fifth day will be common. "There's a reason we like them together," Cora explained to Dana Wakiji of MLB.com. "They're gonna load up with righties against Rich and... then we can turn the page to Whitlock and we get a lot of good matchups for us. I think both of them complement each other well, 88 with ride and then 94-95 with that stuff. It's a good plan. It's just a matter of how long we can do it." Whitlock has made two appearances and allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out six over 6.1 innings. At this point, the Red Sox will keep in this multi-inning role, although some may evolve into a save opportunity.
Apr 10, 2022
Inks four-year extension
Whitlock agreed to a four-year extension to remain in Boston through 2026 on Sunday, with two additional club options for 2027 and 2028.
ANALYSIS
The base of the deal will cover each of the seasons for which Whitlock is arbitration eligible, and the club options cover his first two years of free agency. Whitlock is a valuable arm out of Boston's bullpen, as he is capable of working multiple innings or in high-leverage roles. He could also shift into the starting rotation at some point, though he has yet to do so at the big-league level.
Apr 9, 2022
Throws multiple innings
Whitlock allowed a run on two hits and struck out four over 2.1 innings in Friday's 6-5 extra-innings loss to the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock entered the game in the sixth inning and breezed through six outs before allowing a game-tying home run to DJ LeMahieu in the eighth inning. He was immediately removed following the homer, and it was not clear if manager Alex Cora would have used Whitlock for the four-out save had he retained the lead. The Red Sox have not named a closer, and the bullpen structure was not made any clearer after Opening Day, which also included news of Matt Barnes' back injury.
Apr 4, 2022
Set to form tandem with Hill
Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed Monday that Whitlock will serve as a piggyback pitcher behind fifth starter Rich Hill to begin the season, Sean McAdam of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.
ANALYSIS
According to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe, Cora has said the goal is to get more than 70 innings out of Whitlock for the second year in a row, and deploying the 25-year-old as a quasi-sixth starter rather than a traditional reliever should help accomplish that. The arrangement should also help ease the burden on the 42-year-old Hill, who is coming off a season with the Rays and Mets in which he covered 158.2 innings, but otherwise hasn't been durable for the majority of his career. Since Whitlock has been steadily increasing his pitch count throughout the spring, he's expected to be available for an extended relief outing behind starter Nathan Eovaldi in Thursday's Opening Day game against the Yankees, per Ian Browne of MLB.com. With the benefit of a team off day Friday, Whitlock should then be ready to pitch on four days' rest when Hill's first turn in the rotation comes up April 12 in Detroit.
Mar 29, 2022
Shines in spring start
Whitlock allowed one hit and walked one while striking out two over three scoreless innings in a spring training start against the Twins on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
This was Whitlock's first Grapefruit League start and first start of any kind since July 2019 prior to undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery. Although used exclusively out of the bullpen last season, Whitlock's in the mix for the final rotation spot along with Rich Hill, who also pitched three innings Sunday. It was the second time both pitchers have appeared in the same game this spring. Both hurlers will likely appear in the same game this Friday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Boston manager Alex Cora has not revealed plans on how he plans to utilize Whitlock, whose versatility in relief was key for the Red Sox, but it's safe to say he'll be an important piece.
Mar 23, 2022
Works two innings in debut
Whitlock allowed three hits and two walks over two scoreless innings in Tuesday's spring training game against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock followed game starter Rich Hill, who threw two scoreless innings himself, albeit with less base traffic than Whitlock. The two are ostensibly competing for the No. 5 starter job, but the Red Sox understand what Whitlock meant to them last season as a bullpen workhorse. He came up through the Yankees' system as a starter but was hurt a few years ago -- Tommy John elbow surgery -- and Boston may have found an ideal spot for him as a multi-inning reliever who has also been mentioned as a closer candidate.
Mar 13, 2022
Getting stretched out
Whitlock is getting stretched out this spring, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Alex Cora wouldn't say if Whitlock or Tanner Houck would be in the Opening Day rotation, saying they are being stretched out to help with innings early on. The Red Sox have five veteran starters on the roster, with Whitlock and Houck representing the exciting potential next wave. We already know Whitlock's stuff plays well in a high-leverage relief role, but he could be more valuable to Boston long term if he successfully transitions back to being a starter. The 25-year-old righty has a starter's pitch mix and came up as a starter with the Yankees before being poached by Boston in the Rule 5 draft last offseason.
Oct 4, 2021
Fans two in return
Whitlock (pectoral) pitched a perfect inning and struck out two in Sunday's 7-5 win over Washington.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander missed nearly two weeks with a pectoral strain, but he was solid in his return in the regular-season finale. Whitlock has a 1.96 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 81:17 K:BB across 73.1 innings this year. He's added a pair of saves and 14 holds, so he could be a quality high-leverage option if Boston goes on an extended postseason run.
Oct 3, 2021
Back from IL
The Red Sox activated Whitlock (pectoral) from the 10-day injured list Sunday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock hasn't pitched since Sept. 19 due to a pectoral strain, but he'll likely see action if Sunday's game against the Nationals is close in the late innings. Further, he'll be one of manager Alex Cora' top relief options in any potential Game 163, wild card game or ensuing postseason round.
Oct 2, 2021
Won't return Saturday
Whitlock (pectoral) won't be reinstated from the 10-day injured list Saturday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock threw a bullpen session Friday, but he won't rejoin the active roster Saturday. Manager Alex Cora isn't yet sure whether the right-hander will be able to return Sunday, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him available for the postseason if the Red Sox secure a wild-card spot.
Oct 2, 2021
Throws bullpen Friday
Whitlock (pectoral) threw a bullpen session Friday.
ANALYSIS
The activity puts Whitlock in line to possibly pitch in a regular season game either Saturday or Sunday, which would be a significant boost to a bullpen that's been tested over the last month. The Red Sox will monitor how Whitlock responds during the day Saturday before making a decision on next steps.
Sep 29, 2021
Bullpen session on tap
Whitlock (pectoral) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Friday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
If Whitlock checks out fine following the bullpen session, he could be activated from the 10-day injured list as soon as Saturday, provided the Red Sox are still in the mix for one of the American League's two wild-card spots. The 25-year-old rookie right-hander has been Boston's most valuable reliever in terms of WAR (1.5) this season, posting a 1.99 ERA and 1.12 WHIP while collecting 15 holds, eight wins and two saves over 72.1 innings.
Sep 28, 2021
Could return over weekend
Manager Alex Cora said that Whitlock (pectoral) made about 60 throws while playing catch Tuesday and that the right-hander could be activated from the 10-day injured list during the upcoming weekend series against the Nationals, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Cora noted that Whitlock is not expected to be ready to be activated when first eligible Thursday. Nonetheless, so long as the right-hander is able to return during the final regular-season series in Washington, he should be a candidate to log high-leverage postseason innings should Boston qualify. Whitlock posted an impressive 1.99 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 79:17 K:BB to go along with three saves and 15 holds before moving to the IL with a pectoral strain Sept. 21.
Sep 24, 2021
Progressing as hoped
Manager Alex Cora said Friday that Whitlock is feeling better after landing on the injured list earlier in the week with a right pectoral strain, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Cora previously indicated that he expected Whitlock to return by the end of the regular season, and Friday's update suggests that remains the case. The right-hander has yet to resume throwing, but so long as he's able to do so in the next few days, he should remain on track to be activated during the closing four-game stretch against the Orioles and Nationals.
Sep 21, 2021
Moves to injured list
Whitlock (pectoral) was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Bill Koch of The Providence Journal, manager Alex Cora maintained that the pectoral injury isn't thought to be serious, but that they "don't feel he's going to be ready in the upcoming days." The move to the IL can be backdated to Monday, so Whitlock will become eligible to be reinstated Sept. 30 against Baltimore. If he progresses as hopes, the right-hander stands a strong chance to rejoin the Boston bullpen for the last four games of the regular season. Ryan Brasier was recalled from Triple-A Worcester to take his spot on the 28-man roster.
Sep 20, 2021
Avoids major injury
Whitlock's pectoral strain is a minor one but could still send him to the injured list, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock left Sunday's game against Oakland with what was originally described as right pectoral tightness. It turns out that he's dealing with a strain, but he could still potentially avoid a trip to the injured list. If he doesn't wind up being so lucky, however, he'll only be eligible to return for the final four days of the regular season.
Sep 19, 2021
Leaves with pectoral tightness
Whitlock was removed from Sunday's game against the Orioles with right pectoral tightness, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock delivered a scoreless sixth inning and returned for the seventh, but he quickly exited with an athletic trainer due to the injury. Overall he was charged with an earned run on a hit and a walk with zero strikeouts. The severity of the injury remains unclear, but the 25-year-old will have Monday's scheduled off day to aid in his recovery before potentially missing additional time.
Sep 13, 2021
Suffers loss Sunday
Whitlock (8-4) allowed one run on one hit while striking out two over two-thirds of an inning in a loss to the White Sox on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock came in to try and extend the game to extra innings after the Red Sox tied it up in the top of the ninth but was unable to do so. The 25-year-old struck out the first two batters he faced before Leury Garcia connected on an 0-2 fastball and sent it over the wall in center field to walk it off for the White Sox. Whitlock has now given up at least a run in three of his last four outings but still has been pretty effective overall. He has a 1.92 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 78:16 K:BB over 70.1 innings to go along with two saves and 13 holds. The Red Sox clearly trust him in high-leverage situations and should continue to use him in those situations during the final stretch of the regular season.
Sep 12, 2021
Picks up win
Whitlock (8-3) allowed one hit and one walk over two scoreless innings to pick up the win over the White Sox on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock bounced back after he was part of a spectacular meltdown by the Red Sox five days earlier. Saturday's game took on a similar feel -- Boston jumped to a big lead early, only to let the opponent back in with shoddy fielding and suspect relief work -- but Whitlock prevented any late damage in this one. Despite some recent hiccups, Whitlock is viewed as a key piece to Boston's late-game strategy.
Sep 7, 2021
Blows save, takes loss
Whitlock (7-3) allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits while striking out two over 1.1 innings to pick up a blown save and a loss against the Rays on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock was called on to close out the game with Boston up, 9-8, in the top of the ninth, but Austin Meadows' inside-the-park home run forced extra frames. It was a tough-luck situation for Whitlock, who watched the entire outfield misplay Meadows' smash off the wall. Another error in the 10th inning led to a run and earned him the loss. Whitlock has been good for Boston and should continue to work high-leverage spots along with Adam Ottavino, while the team gets a handle on its COVID-19 outbreak. Matt Barnes, the team's nominal closer who was also caught up in the outbreak, slipped dramatically before landing on the COVID-19 list, posting a 15.88 ERA over 10 August outings.
Sep 3, 2021
Secures second save
Whitlock allowed a run on three hits and struck out two in 1.1 innings to earn the save in Friday's 8-5 win over Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was able to get out of trouble in relief of Ryan Brasier in the eighth inning. Whitlock then ran into some trouble of his own in the ninth, but he was able to keep the lead for his second save of the season. While he's allowed six runs (five earned) across his last 12.1 innings, Whitlock remains a reliable high-leverage arm for Boston. He has a 1.63 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 74:15 K:BB and 13 holds through 66.1 innings overall.
Aug 28, 2021
Earns sixth win Saturday
Whitlock (6-2) earned the win Saturday against Cleveland after pitching a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and striking out two.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock had the tough task to pitch the ninth in a tied game, but he was efficient since he needed just 14 pitches (10 strikes) to get the job done and earn his sixth win of the season. The right-hander has had some less-than-impressive efforts in two bullpen games this month, but he's been excellent most of the time and owns a blistering 1.57 ERA on the season. Plus, he has allowed just five earned runs across 25 innings (16 appearances) from July onwards.
Aug 24, 2021
Wins in extras
Whitlock (5-2) allowed an unearned run on one hit and struck out four over 2.2 innings to pick up the win in extra innings over Texas on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock bailed out the Red Sox with one out in the ninth inning, after closer Matt Barnes made a mess of a save situation in support of starter Nathan Eovaldi. After getting out of the ninth with the score tied, Whitlock allowed the automatic runner to score in the top of the 10th inning, but the Red Sox evened it in the bottom half of the inning before sealing the win with a walkoff grand slam in the 11th. Outside of a pair of games against Rays and Yankees earlier this month, Whitlock has been exceptional out of Boston's bullpen.
Jul 5, 2021
Works eighth for Ottavino
Whitlock allowed one hit in a scoreless eighth inning to earn the hold in Sunday's 1-0 victory over Oakland.
ANALYSIS
With Adam Ottavino unavailable to pitch a third consecutive day, manager Alex Cora went with Whitlock to caretake the eighth inning for closer Matt Barnes in the ninth. He worked around a wild pitch that put a man in scoring position by inducing a couple of infield popups to end the frame. He's been one of the better stories in the Red Sox's bullpen: a Rule 5 draft pick emerging as a key component for the team with the best record in the American League. Whitlock is 3-0 with a 0.89 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP and 22 strikeouts over the last 13 outings, spanning 20.1 innings.
Jun 12, 2021
Earns two-inning win
Whitlock (2-1) earned the win Friday against the Blue Jays after tossing two scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits and a walk while fanning three.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander might have allowed baserunners on his two innings of work, but only one of those reached scoring position and he limited the damage as well. Whitlock has tossed six scoreless outings over his last seven appearances and owns a strong 1.65 ERA across five games (6.2 innings) this month.
Jun 5, 2021
Grabs win Saturday
Whitlock (1-1) allowed a hit and two strikeouts over 1.2 innings, earning the win Saturday versus the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock allowed one of starter Eduardo Rodriguez's inherited runners to score in the sixth inning, which tied the game at 3-3. Beyond that, Whitlock was solid, and Boston's four-run eighth inning put him in line for his first win of the year. The right-hander has a 1.63 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 29:7 K:BB through 27.2 innings. He's added one save and five holds, which indicates he could continue to see some high-leverage work.
May 16, 2021
Back from COVID list
Whitlock was activated from the COVID-19 injured list Sunday.
ANALYSIS
The Rule 5 pick was feeling the effects from the coronavirus vaccine, but he's ready to roll a day later. Colten Brewer was optioned to make room on the roster. Whitlock secured his first career save earlier in the week, adding to the stellar body of work he's putting together (1.77 ERA, 0.98). It looks like the Red Sox found themselves a diamond in the rough.
May 15, 2021
Feeling side effects
Whitlock was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Saturday after feeling effects from the vaccine, Steve Hewitt of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock's absence should not be lengthy, as he can activated as soon as he is feeling well enough to pitch. He's been effective out of the bullpen this season for Boston, maintaining a 1.77 ERA and 0.98 WHIP with a 21:3 K:BB across 20.1 innings.
May 14, 2021
Corrals first save
Whitlock allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out two over three scoreless innings to earn the save in Thursday's 8-1 win over the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock was stretched out enough to finish the final three innings and claim the first save of his career. He's normally a middle reliever that works multiple innings, but Whitlock has earned the chance to throw high-leverage if needed. As manager Alex Cora continues to search for the right late-game mix -- Darwinzon Hernandez is failing that test right now -- Whitlock could emerge as an important piece in the final third of games.
May 6, 2021
Loses it in 10th
Whitlock (0-1) picked up the loss in the 10th inning of Wednesday's game against the Tigers. He allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits over one inning.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock, who breezed through his first 13.1 innings, has hit a bump this week. On Sunday, Isiah Kiner-Falefa touched him for a home run -- the first run he allowed all season -- then Jeimer Candelario took him deep for a three-run dinger in Wednesday's extra frame. The Rule 5 pick has a 1.76 ERA and 0.85 WHIP over 15.1 innings.

Throws two scoreless innings
Whitlock allowed one hit and one walk while striking out four over two scoreless innings in Wednesday's 1-0 win over the Mets.
ANALYSIS

Retired batter streak snapped
Whitlock allowed two hits and walked one while striking out three over 2.1 scoreless innings in Friday's 6-5 win over the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock retired the first two batters faced, extending his streak to 25 consecutive retired hitters before giving up a single to Sam Haggerty. He pitched a perfect seventh before leaving with two men on and one out, then Adam Ottavino prevented any damage with a pair of strikeouts. The outing extended Whitlock's scoreless innings streak to 11.1 to open the season. The base on balls was his first permitted. He's not in the mix for saves, but Whitlock, a minor-league starter, could usurp starts if Garrett Richards (6.48 ERA) continues to pitch like he has.

More perfection Monday
Whitlock retired all eight batters faced, striking out two over 2.2 innings to finish up Monday's 11-4 win over the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock authored his third straight clean outing and has retired 23 consecutive batters. The Rule 5 pick is off to an impressive start to his big-league career, fanning 11 without issuing a walk over nine scoreless innings.

Used in close game
Whitlock struck out three over two scoreless innings in Thursday's 7-3 win over the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock entered the game in the sixth inning with Boston clinging to a one-run lead and set down all six batters faced on just 20 pitches. After his debut earlier this week, when he struck out five over 3.1 innings, manager Alex Cora told Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com that he would try to expose the Rule 5 draft pick in higher leverage situations. That's exactly what the manager did Thursday. "He belongs," Cora said. "The tempo, the conviction. Most of the time, Rule 5 guys don't shake off your catcher, but he knows what he wants to do, and he does." Whitlock is still viewed long-term as a starter, and Cora plans to use him in a variety of relief roles.

Positive takeaway in blowout
Whitlock allowed three hits and struck out five over 3.1 innings in Sunday's 11-3 loss to the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
There wasn't a whole lot for Boston to feel good about in its three-game series against Baltimore, and Whitlock was one of them. The Red Sox were outscored 18-5 and batted .160. Whitlock, the Rule 5 pick from the Yankees was needed early following the eggs laid by starter Garrett Richards (six runs, two-plus innings) and reliever Josh Taylor (four runs, two-thirds). The Tommy John survivor hadn't pitched since 2019 and pounded the zone with a fastball that topped out at 96.9 MPH. Sunday's effort was a continuation of a remarkable spring training during which he struck out 12 and walked none over nine innings. Whitlock's role to open the season is that of a multi-inning reliever, but the 24-year-old right-hander could operate as a starter if the need arises.

Makes roster
Whitlock will break camp with the Red Sox, Mark Feisand of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Whitlock, the Rule 5 draft pick from the Yankees, hasn't appeared during the regular season since 2019 when he went 3-3 with a 3.07 ERA in 14 starts for Double-A Trenton. He'll work out of Boston's bullpen in 2021 after giving up one run on eight hits while striking out 12 and walking none over nine Grapefruit League innings. It's expected he'll be used as a multi-inning reliever.

ANALYSIS
Whitlock, a Rule 5 draft pick, owns a 1.50 ERA with seven strikeouts and no walks over six spring innings. A starter in the minors, Whitlock appears to be winning a spot in Boston's bullpen, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
