Sep 15, 2023
Delivers lone run in blowout
McCarthy went 1-for-1 with a double and an RBI in Thursday's 11-1 loss to the Mets.

Sep 12, 2023
Recalled from Reno
McCarthy was recalled Tuesday from Triple-A Reno, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM reports.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy has been a disappointment at the major-league level this season, but he boasts a .360/.416/.594 batting line with nine homers and 15 steals in 45 games at Triple-A. He just earned his second straight Pacific Coast League Player of the Week award and could draw semi-regular starts in the Diamondbacks' outfield down the stretch. Pavin Smith was optioned out in a corresponding move.
Aug 14, 2023
Optioned to Reno
McCarthy was optioned Monday to Triple-A Reno, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
It's the second demotion of the year for McCarthy, who has racked up 26 stolen bases but carries a rough .245/.325/.331 batting line across 291 plate appearances. Kyle Lewis will fill his spot on the Diamondbacks' major-league roster ahead of Monday's series opener at Coors Field in Colorado.
Aug 9, 2023
On bench Wednesday
McCarthy is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy has gone 5-for-10 with three walks and three stolen bases over his last four games, but he carries a disappointing .255/.332/.334 slash line in 279 total plate appearances this year. Tommy Pham, Alek Thomas and Corbin Carroll will canvas the Arizona outfield Wednesday.
Aug 7, 2023
Steals two bases in loss
McCarthy went 2-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Twins.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy registered a pair of steals, upping his season total to 25 in 81 games. That's two more than had last season in 99 games. The steals were is first nine games, as the outfielder was mired in a 3-for-20 slump during the previous eight games.
Aug 3, 2023
Not in lineup Thursday
McCarthy is not in the lineup Thursday against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Lourdes Gurriel, Alek Thomas and Corbin Carroll will start across the outfield as the Diamondbacks take on the Giants and left-handed opener Scott Alexander. The left-handed-hitting McCarthy should be available off the bench.
Jul 30, 2023
Not in Sunday's lineup
McCarthy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game versus Seattle.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy has a .721 OPS through 14 games in the second half and will head to the bench Sunday against Mariners righty Luis Castillo. Dominic Canzone will start in right field and bat fifth in McCarthy's absence.
Jul 23, 2023
Takes seat Sunday
McCarthy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Though most of the lefty-hitting McCarthy's off days come against left-handed pitching, he'll head to the bench Sunday while a right-hander (Luke Weaver) toes the rubber for Cincinnati. Dominic Canzone will pick up his first career start in right field in place of McCarthy, who is slashing .292/.414/.333 with four runs, two RBI and two stolen bases in his first eight games out of the All-Star break.
Jul 20, 2023
Swipes two bags in win
McCarthy went 2-for-5 with a run and two stolen bases in a 5-3 victory versus Atlanta on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy capitalized on both of his singles in the contest, swiping second base following each hit. It was the sixth time this season that the speedy outfielder has stolen multiple bags in a contest, and he's up to 22 thefts overall, tied for eighth in the majors. McCarthy spent about a month in the minors early in the season following a slow start to the campaign, but he's been outstanding since his return, slashing .306/.382/.410 with a home run, 10 RBI, 22 runs and 20 thefts in 21 attempts over 43 games.
Jul 18, 2023
Not in lineup Tuesday
McCarthy is absent from the lineup Tuesday at Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Lourdes Gurriel, Alek Thomas and Corbin Carroll will start across the outfield for the Diamondbacks as they face off against right-hander Bryce Elder. McCarthy is stuck in a 2-for-14 rut at the dish, though he has drawn five walks over that span.
Jul 16, 2023
Prominent in loss
McCarthy went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and was picked off first base in Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy's threat as a speedster was on display, both good and bad, during the game. He beat out a two-out, infield chopper in the fourth inning that plated two runs and tied the game. Later, with Arizona down a run, he led off the seventh with a walk and was picked off by Toronto reliever Nate Pearson. McCarthy told Ethan Diamandas of MLB.com that he didn't feel he was being over-aggressive and the pickoff throw was perfectly timed. The outfielder is second on the Diamondbacks and tied for 12th in MLB with 20 steals.
Jul 8, 2023
Sitting Saturday
McCarthy isn't in Arizona's lineup Saturday against Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
After walking twice, scoring twice and stealing two bases during Friday's win, McCarthy will get a breather Saturday. His absence moves Corbin Carroll into right field and allows Lourdes Gurriel to start in left while batting fifth.
Jul 8, 2023
Logs two thefts
McCarthy went 0-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored and two steals in Friday's 7-3 win over the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy's speed set up runs in the third and fourth innings. He led off both frames with a walk then stole second base before coming around to score. He has three steals over the last two games and reached the 20-steal mark in just 58 games. It's the second consecutive season with at least 20 thefts for McCarthy, who has a .377 OBP since returning to the majors May 26.
Jul 6, 2023
Not in lineup Thursday
McCarthy is not in the lineup Thursday against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Dominic Fletcher will start in right field and bat seventh versus the Mets and right-hander Carlos Carrasco. This is presumably a planned day of rest for McCarthy, who's delivered a .316/.373/.439 batting line with 16 stolen bases in 35 games since being recalled to the Diamondbacks' major-league roster in late May.
Jul 6, 2023
Picks up 18th steal
McCarthy went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Mets.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy had gone six games without a steal entering this contest. He's been pretty steady lately, going 27-for-83 (.325) over his last 25 games. The outfielder has a .254/.321/.367 slash line, 18 thefts, two home runs, 11 RBI and 24 runs scored over 197 plate appearances.
Jul 2, 2023
Gets Sunday off
McCarthy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
After going 1-for-6 with a triple, a walk, a run and an RBI between the first two games of the series in Anaheim, the lefty-hitting McCarthy will check out of the lineup with southpaw Reid Detmers on the bump for the Angels. Dominic Fletcher will replace McCarthy in right field.
Jun 29, 2023
Leads off Wednesday
McCarthy batted leadoff and went 1-for-4 in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy was given a vote of confidence, moving up from ninth to leadoff, as a fill-in for a resting Geraldo Perdomo. The outfielder has hit safely in 13 of the last 15 games, posting a .333 average and .868 OPS during that stretch. Since returning to the majors in late May, McCarthy is batting .303 with three doubles, two triples, one home run, 17 RBI, 15 steals and 15 runs over 29 contests.
Jun 28, 2023
Adds another theft
McCarthy went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 8-4 win over the Rays.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy has logged three steals over his last five games, going 5-for-19 (.263) in that span. The outfielder is batting .288 in June, earning him a regular role in right field. He's up to a .241/.309/.342 slash line with 17 steals, two home runs, 10 RBI and 23 runs scored over 176 plate appearances on the year.
Jun 25, 2023
Logs steal in loss
McCarthy went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and run scored in Saturday's 7-6 loss to San Francisco.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy was part of Arizona's four-run fifth inning, leading off with a bunt single, swiping second base, then coming home on Ketel Marte's single. It was the 16th stolen base for McCarthy, who has 14 thefts in the 26 games since returning to the majors.
Jun 22, 2023
Heads to bench Thursday
McCarthy is not in Thursday's lineup against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Nick Ahmed and Alek Thomas enter the fray in this one, relegating McCarthy to the bench, even with righty Jake Irvin on the hill for Washington. McCarthy is hitting .274 with one home run and seven steals in 18 games this month.
Jun 18, 2023
Goes yard in win
McCarthy went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy extended his hitting streak to six games (10-for-24), and his go-ahead solo shot in the eighth inning was his fifth extra-base hit during the streak. The outfielder hadn't homered since April 23, just two games before his demotion to Triple-A Reno. He's at two long balls, eight RBI, 18 runs scored, 14 stolen bases and a .233/.296/.357 slash line over 42 contests this year. He's seeing regular playing time thanks to his improved hitting of late, which has pushed Pavin Smith into more of a part-time role.
Jun 17, 2023
Adds another steal Friday
McCarthy went 2-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 5-1 win over the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy has stolen a base in consecutive games after going seven contests without a theft. The outfielder has also hit safely in five straight games, going 9-for-21 (.429) with four extra-base hits in that span. He's hit fairly well since returning to the majors May 26, lifting his season slash line to .230/.295/.333 with 14 steals, one home run, seven RBI and 17 runs scored over 140 plate appearances.
Jun 16, 2023
Steals, scores in loss
McCarthy went 2-for-4 with a double, stolen base and run scored in Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy extended a modest four-game hit streak with a third-inning double and came home on Gabriel Moreno's single. The outfielder is 7-for-16 with two doubles and two triples during the streak. The stolen base snapped a seven-game run without an attempt, which runs counter to McCarthy's behavior since being recalled in late May. He was 10-for-10 in steals over the first 10 games back in the majors.
Jun 7, 2023
Running wild
McCarthy went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two stolen bases in Tuesday's 10-5 win over Washington.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy has multiple steals in two straight games and stolen 10 bags in 10 games since being recalled from Triple-A Reno. The outfielder is getting on base with regularity since rejoining the parent club, which could mean a full season's worth of steals. McCarthy had 23 stolen bases over 99 games in 2022.
Jun 5, 2023
Adds two more thefts
McCarthy went 0-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases in Sunday's 8-5 loss to Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
In his second MLB stint of 20203, McCarthy is showing off the same base-stealing skills he did when he got a second chance in 2022. Since returning from Triple-A Reno on May 26, the outfielder has swiped eight bases in nine games. McCarthy, who had a .229 on-base percentage before his demotion to Reno, has a .355 OBP since his recall.
Jun 3, 2023
Sitting Saturday
McCarthy isn't in the Diamondbacks' lineup Saturday against Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy has bounced back nicely since returning to the big leagues May 26, slashing .320/.370/.360 with two RBI and six stolen bases. He'll be replaced in right field by Pavin Smith on Saturday, allowing Evan Longoria to serve as Arizona's DH and bat sixth.
Jun 1, 2023
Adds another steal
McCarthy went 2-for-4 with a stolen bag and a run scored in Wednesday's 6-0 win over the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy singled to lead off the second and wasted no time stealing second for his fifth stolen base over the last three games. The 25-year-old has also notched six hits over that same span and has not struck out. He looks much more comfortable at the plate since being called back up from Triple-A Reno and should continue to be a great option for steals if he can continue to find ways to get on base.
May 31, 2023
Running again
McCarthy went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases in Tuesday's 5-1 win over Colorado.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy's two steals give him four over the last two games and five since he was recalled from Triple-A Reno. The outfielder, who stole 23 bases in 99 games last season, is 5-for-14 with a walk since rejoining the parent club.
May 30, 2023
Swipes two bags in victory
McCarthy went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run, two RBI and two stolen bases against Colorado in a 7-5 win Monday.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy was a key catalyst for the offense near the bottom of the order, knocking in Arizona's first two runs in the second inning and swiping second base on two occasions. The speedy outfielder recently returned from a prolonged stint in the minors and had gone 1-for-8 since his return coming into Monday, so the big performance could be a turning point in his season. McCarthy's sprint speed ranks in the 98th percentile in the majors, making him a legitimate threat to steal any time he reaches base.
May 28, 2023
Claims third straight start
McCarthy will start in right field and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy will man right field for the third game in a row after he went 1-for-5 with a double, a walk and a stolen base between his first two contests since returning from Triple-A Reno. With Dominic Fletcher now back in the minors, McCarthy looks like he'll handle an everyday role in the Arizona outfield. Despite his struggles over 76 plate appearances in the majors this season (.487 OPS), McCarthy makes for an intriguing speculative pickup off the waiver wire due to the stolen-base upside he displayed with Arizona in 2022.
May 27, 2023
Swipes bag in return to majors
McCarthy went 0-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base in Friday's 7-2 loss to the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy tore up Triple-A pitching with a .322/.410/..522 slash line, four home runs, four stolen bases, 17 RBI and 17 runs scored in 22 games over the last month. The outfielder should get a look in an everyday role, either in center field or right field, as long as he can continue his strong hitting following his call-up. At the major-league level this year, he has a .138 batting average, .464 OPS, one homer and three steals through 73 plate appearances, so he still has a ways to go to prove himself again after regressing from last year's breakout campaign.
May 25, 2023
Returning to majors
The Diamondbacks are planning to recall Jake McCarthy from Triple-A Reno, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy was demoted to Reno in late April after hitting just .143 with Arizona to begin the season. He's hit well in the minors since, maintaining a .410 average and .932 OPS while swiping four bags across 22 games. Dominic Fletcher was optioned in a corresponding move, leaving McCarthy as the favorite to be the primary starter in center field.
Apr 25, 2023
Optioned to Triple-A
McCarthy was optioned Tuesday to Triple-A Reno, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy had quite a bit of fantasy buzz leading into the 2023 campaign following his mini breakout in 2022, but he heads to the farm having slashed just .143/.229/.238 with one homer and two steals through 22 games (70 plate appearances) this season for the Diamondbacks. Emmanuel Rivera has been recalled in a corresponding move, though it should be Pavin Smith who benefits most from McCarthy's demotion.
Apr 24, 2023
Breaks slump
McCarthy went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 7-5 loss to the Padres.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy snapped an 0-for-22 skid with an eighth-inning homer, his first of the season. The outfielder, who provided surprising fantasy value in the second half of 2022, is slashing .150/.227/.250 through 21 games. During his slump, McCarthy lost at-bats to Pavin Smith and Lourdes Gurriel.
Apr 22, 2023
Sits again Saturday
McCarthy remains on the bench Saturday against San Diego.
ANALYSIS
At the start of the season, McCarthy appeared primed to start against every righty as well as a handful of lefties. His off day here against Joe Musgrove means he's now been on the bench against four of the last five right-handers Arizona has faced. The loss of playing time is no surprise given that he's hitting just .143/.226/.196 on the year. Pavin Smith remains in the lineup as the designated hitter, while Lourdes Gurriel plays left field alongside Alek Thomas and Corbin Carroll.
Apr 21, 2023
Out of lineup Friday
McCarthy isn't in Arizona's lineup Friday against San Diego, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
It has been nine games since McCarthy last recorded a base hit, so he will take a seat again Friday. His absence opens up a spot for Pavin Smith to serve as Arizona's designated hitter and bat sixth.
Apr 20, 2023
Extends hitless run
McCarthy went 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter in Wednesday's 14-5 loss to St. Louis.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy is hitless over his last 15 at-bats and is batting just .154 through 17 games. Wednesday's non-start was the second straight game against a right-hander that the lefty-hitting outfielder opened on the bench. Pavin Smith, who homered for a second straight game in place of McCarthy in the starting lineup, could grab more opportunities going foward.
Apr 19, 2023
Out of lineup Wednesday
McCarthy will take a seat Wednesday against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy will head to the bench after he went 0-for-4 with a run scored in Tuesday's 8-7 win over St. Louis. Corbin Carroll will slide over to right field while Pavin Smith enters the lineup at designated hitter and bats sixth as the Diamondbacks attempt to finish off the series sweep.
Apr 17, 2023
Sits for second time in four games
McCarthy is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
After going hitless in 10 at-bats over his last three starts to drop his season-long average to .170, McCarthy will find himself out of the lineup for the second time in four games. Pavin Smith, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Sunday's 5-0 win over Miami, will be rewarded with a second straight start while McCarthy heads to the bench.
Apr 14, 2023
Out of lineup Friday
McCarthy is not in the lineup Friday against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Lourdes Gurriel, Alek Thomas and Corbin Carroll will start across the outfield for the Diamondbacks with left-hander Trevor Rogers on the mound for Miami. McCarthy had a lot of fantasy hype this spring, but he's slashing just .195/.267/.268 with zero homers and two steals through 12 games.
Apr 7, 2023
Out against lefty
McCarthy isn't in Arizona's starting lineup Friday against the Dodgers, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
After going 4-for-7 at the plate and recording a steal over Arizona's last two games, the lefty-hitting McCarthy will take a seat against the lefty-throwing Clayton Kershaw on Friday. As a result, Corbin Carroll will move over to right field and Lourdes Gurriel will play in left, giving Kyle Lewis an opportunity to serve as Arizona's DH and bat second.
Apr 5, 2023
Reaches base four times
McCarthy went 2-for-3 with a walk, was hit by a pitch, scored two runs and was successful on one of two attempted steals in Tuesday's 8-6 win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy was part of a lower-half of the order that was a key to the win. He started Arizona's four-run eighth inning with a single and stole second base before racing home with the tying run on a safety squeeze bunt by shortstop Geraldo Perdomo. McCarthy stole 23 bases (caught three times) in 99 games last season, so he has the ability to make an impact for fantasy teams.
Apr 3, 2023
Delivers game-winning hit
McCarthy went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a stolen base and was hit by a pitch in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy laid down a drag bunt with two outs in the ninth for his first hit of the season, which delivered the game-winning run. Arizona's primary right fielder had not swung the bat well and decided to take a chance when Los Angeles first baseman Freddie Freeman dropped deep behind the bag. McCarthy went 1-for-10 during the season-opening four-game set in Los Angeles.
Apr 1, 2023
Sits against southpaw
McCarthy will be on the bench Saturday against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Clayton Kershaw marks the second southpaw the Diamondbacks have faced in their first three games, giving us two windows into their plans for their lefty-heavy outfield this season. On Opening Day, Alek Thomas hit the bench, with Lourdes Gurriel, Corbin Carroll and McCarthy starting from left to right and Kyle Lewis serving as the designated hitter. This time around, McCarthy sits while Gurriel, Thomas and Carroll handle the outfield. Lewis will again serve as the designated hitter.
Mar 24, 2023
Plays Friday
McCarthy (illness) started in right field and went 1-for-3 with two RBI in Friday's spring game against the Reds.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy returned to action after missing nearly a week with an illness. The 25-year-old will get a number of plate appearances in the final days of spring to get his swing timing down.
Mar 24, 2023
Back in clubhouse
McCarthy (illness) returned to the clubhouse Thursday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy was away from the team for five days due to the illness. He was not part of the lineup in either of Thursday's split games with manager Torey Lovullo deciding to give him another day before an expected appearance Friday.
Mar 17, 2023
Scratched from lineup with the flu
McCarthy was scratched from the Diamondbacks' Cactus League lineup Friday due to flu-like symptoms, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He should be ready to go in a day or two. Tim Tawa has replaced McCarthy in center field.
Oct 2, 2022
Collects another steal
McCarthy went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Giants.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy hit a go-ahead single in the 10th inning and later stole third as part of a double-steal with Christian Walker. The theft was McCarthy's fifth in his last seven games, and he's now gone 9-for-19 in his last four contests. The outfielder has shown strong contact-hitting skills in 2022, striking out at a 20.5 percent rate while batting .295. He's added modest power and speed as well, logging eight home runs, 23 steals, 43 RBI, 53 runs scored and an .800 OPS through 341 plate appearances.
Oct 1, 2022
Keeps running Friday
McCarthy went 3-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 10-4 loss to the Giants.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy finished an excellent September with 10 steals in 12 attempts across 23 games. He also hit .299 (26-for-87) this month, though he put up only four extra-base hits. The speedy outfielder's surge has him up to a .291/.353/.441 slash line with 22 steals, eight home runs, 41 RBI and 51 runs scored through 94 contests.
Sep 29, 2022
Two more steals
McCarthy went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases and a run scored in Wednesday's 5-2 win over Houston.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy, who stole his 20th and 21st bases of the season, is putting the final touches on a surprising fantasy season. He bounced between the majors and minors over the first half, but the outfielder is having a second half that put him on the fantasy radar. He's slashing .305/.372/.443 with 17 steals and 32 RBI over 58 games. While the Diamondbacks showcased their outfield of the future this season -- Corbin Carroll, Alek Thomas and Daulton Varsho -- McCarthy emerged as a legitimate candidate for a starting job in 2023.
Sep 28, 2022
Hitless in return
McCarthy started in right field and went 0-for-4 in Tuesday's 10-2 loss to the Astros.
ANALYSIS
This marked McCarthy's first game back from the bereavement list. He resumed his normal spot in the batting, hitting third, which has been his home the last 16 games.
Sep 26, 2022
Returns from bereavement
The Diamondbacks reinstated McCarthy from the bereavement list Monday.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy figures to re-enter the lineup Tuesday in Houston after missing the weekend series. The outfielder has gone hitless in his last three contests but has slashed .288/.358/.411 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 19 games this month.
Sep 23, 2022
Out this weekend
McCarthy was placed on the bereavement list Friday.
ANALYSIS
This news came out just before Arizona's lineup, which McCarthy obviously won't be included in. He must miss a minimum of three games and a maximum of seven games, so McCarthy won't play this weekend against the Giants.
Sep 22, 2022
Rides bine against lefty
McCarthy isn't starting Thursday's game against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
The lefty-hitting McCarthy will retreat to the bench against lefty-throwing Julio Urias. Christian Walker will replace him as designated hitter, while Emmanuel Rivera will pick up a start at first base, batting third.
Sep 18, 2022
Collects two hits in return
McCarthy went 2-for-4 with a double in Saturday's 2-0 loss to the Padres.
ANALYSIS
The Diamondbacks' offense has dried up on their current homestand, with Saturday's shutout being the third in six games in Arizona. McCarthy, however, remains as consistent has he's been all second half. He's 6-for-19 during the homestand and batting .339 since the break.
Sep 16, 2022
Heads to bench
McCarthy will sit Friday against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy's off day comes against lefty Blake Snell, but it isn't necessarily a sign that he's now stuck in a platoon, as he'd started against each of the last eight southpaws the Diamondbacks faced. He's been on fire lately, hitting .366/.416/.606 with four homers and eight steals in his last 18 games, but it will be Daulton Varsho who starts in right field Friday.
Sep 15, 2022
Steals base, also caught
McCarthy went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and was caught stealing in Wednesday's 5-3 extra-inning win over the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy nearly ended the game in the bottom of the ninth, when he attempted to steal home, but reliever Evan Phillips nailed him on a close play. It was just the second time in 20 attempts McCarthy's been caught. A spare piece at the start of the season, McCarthy's played his way into a regular role with an .889 OPS in the second half and appears headed for an everyday job in 2023. The outfield will be crowded next season with Corbin Carroll, Daulton Varsho and Alek Thomas, but the left-handed hitting McCarthy could become the designated hitter -- as he was Wednesday -- either every day or most days against right-handers.
Sep 12, 2022
Steals base in four-hit performance
McCarthy went 4-for-6 with a triple, three RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in a 12-6 victory over the Rockies on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy tallied hits in four consecutive at-bats and stole second base in a highly productive start from the number three spot in the lineup. McCarthy punctuated the performance with an RBI triple in the ninth inning. It was his third triple of the season. McCarthy is now slashing an excellent .305/.365/.484 in 80 games played. The 25-year-old has a an enviable success rate on the basepaths as well, having stolen 17 bases in 18 attempts.
Sep 10, 2022
Homers and steals base
McCarthy went 3-for-5 with a solo home run along with two additional RBI and one additional run scored in a 13-10 loss to the Rockies on Friday. He stole one base.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy flashed a combination of power and speed by hitting his eighth home run and stealing his 16th base of the season. McCarthy is slashing .294/.352/.471 and has a Baseball-Reference WAR of 1.9 in 78 games played. The 25-year-old left-handed bat has shown a willingness to run early in his career and could reach 20 stolen bases this season.
Sep 7, 2022
On the run again
McCarthy went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to San Diego.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy swiped his third base in the last two gamee, giving him 15 for the season. Since the All-Star break, the Diamondbacks are tied for first in MLB with 36 steals, led by McCarthy (13) and Josh Rojas (11).

Swipes two bags in win
McCarthy went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run and two stolen bases in Monday's 5-0 victory versus San Diego.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy singled and stole second base in the fourth inning and walked before swiping another bag in the ninth. The latter theft helped produce a run, as McCarthy reached third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly. McCarthy has been a big help in the stolen-base department since returning from a stint in the minors July 11, recording 13 thefts on 14 attempts. He's also batting .322 with five home runs and 26 RBI over 44 games during that span.

Bashes another long ball
McCarthy went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional RBI in a 5-1 win against the Brewers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy singled home a run in the sixth inning and provided additional insurance with a two-run shot to right off Milwaukee reliever Brent Suter. The 25-year-old has now homered in three of his last five contest, during which he's batted 6-for-19 with 10 RBI. McCarthy is slashing .288/.348/.464 with seven home runs, 40 runs, 35 RBI and 12 stolen bases.
Sep 3, 2022
Resting Saturday
McCarthy isn't starting Saturday against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy started the last seven games and hit .321 with two home runs, a triple, a double, nine RBI, six runs and two stolen bases. Ketel Marte will serve as the designated hitter and bat third.
Sep 1, 2022
Homers in loss
McCarthy went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 18-2 loss to the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy homered for a second straight game and has registered at least one RBI in nine of the last 12 contests. When the Diamondbacks called up Corbin Carroll on Monday, it was unclear if that would cut into McCarthy's playing time, but the outfielder has started all three games, moving around from left field to designated hitter to right field. DH is expected to be his primary home, but he'll also spell any of the outfield starters.
Aug 31, 2022
Drives in five
McCarthy went 2-for-5 with a home run, a triple and five RBI in Tuesday's 12-3 win over the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy hit a two-run triple in the second inning and a three-run homer in the fourth to blow things wide open for the Diamondbacks' offense. The 25-year-old's playing time is at risk with top prospect Corbin Carroll in the majors, but McCarthy has at least one RBI in eight of his last 11 games. That productivity could lock him in as the designated hitter going forward. McCarthy is slashing .288/.349/.447 with five homers, 30 RBI, 38 runs scored, 12 stolen bases, 14 doubles and two triples through 70 contests.
Aug 30, 2022
Remains in lineup
McCarthy started in center field and went 0-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and was hit by a pitch in Monday's 13-7 win over the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy slotted in at center field, giving Alek Thomas a breather against left-hander Ranger Suarez, who's been tough on lefty hitters. This was the first game the Diamondbacks had all three of their budding stars available -- Corbin Carroll, Thomas and Daulton Varsho -- but the uber-hot McCarthy's bat stayed in the lineup. Of note, Ketel Marte, who's been serving at DH after aggravating a hamstring injury, returned to second base Monday, so McCarthy should have a path to at-bats as the designated hitter.
Aug 29, 2022
Could lose ABs to Carroll
McCarthy went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Sunday's 3-2 win over the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy delivered the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth with a double and continued a strong run of hitting. He apparently learned to be a more patient hitter from his most recent time in the minors, dropping a 34.9 K% over his first two MLB stints this season to 11.1% since rejoining the Diamondbacks on July 11. McCarthy's settled in nicely to a regular role, but one wonders how the callup of prospect Corbin Carroll will impact his opportunities. Any time in the outfield lost to Carroll could be made up as designated hitter, but Ketel Marte has been filling that role since he aggravated a hamstring injury.
Aug 28, 2022
Scores three times in win
McCarthy went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two steals in Saturday's 10-5 win over the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy made it home on a Geraldo Perdomo single in the second inning and another in the eighth, then scored on an Alek Thomas sac fly in the ninth. He also swiped two bags in the contest and is now up to 12 steals on the year. The outfielder has received significant playing time this month and is performing well, slashing .324/.400/.419. His batting average sits at .292 on the season to go along with four homers.
Aug 26, 2022
Out of lineup
McCarthy will hit the bench Friday against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy has been on fire over his last 10 games, hitting .375 with a homer and three steals, but he'll nonetheless get the day off Friday. Jordan Luplow will start in left field.
Aug 24, 2022
Keeps producing
McCarthy went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in Tuesday's 7-3 win over Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy continued his surprising run, which has been a boon to fantasy managers over the second half of the season. The stolen base was his 10th of the season and eighth since the All-Star break. McCarthy's also providing value with his bat, hitting .321 with an .831 OPS over 34 games since being recalled July 11.
Aug 21, 2022
Homers in loss
McCarthy went 1-for-4 with a walk and a solo home run in Saturday's 16-7 loss to the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy started an eighth-inning rally with a solo blast, which presaged two more runs that brought Arizona within one run. Unfortunately, the bullpen didn't give the team a chance the following inning, giving up eight runs in the top of the ninth. This was McCarthy's first home run since being recalled in July, and the outfielder has put together a sustained stretch of hitting since then. McCarthy is slashing .308/.368/.423 over 32 contests. He's had initial bursts after being recalled before, but they didn't last as long as this current one.
Aug 18, 2022
Delivers as pinch hitter
McCarthy entered Wednesday's game as a pinch hitter and went 1-for-1 with two RBI in Arizona's 3-2 win over San Francisco.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy delivered a key two-run single in the top of the eighth, which turned out to be the game-deciding play. The outfielder has been getting regular work of late thanks to a .357/.419/.429 slash line with seven RBI and three steals over the last nine contests.
Aug 14, 2022
Notches two more thefts
McCarthy went 1-for-3 with a walk, run, RBI and two stolen bases in a 7-4 win against the Rockies on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy walked and stole second in the second inning before doubling in a run, stealing third and scoring in the fourth. The 25-year-old has collected five of his nine steals in August, though the double was his first extra-base hit of the month as he's slashing a mediocre .225/.326/.250 across 11 games.
Aug 11, 2022
Takes seat Thursday
McCarthy isn't starting Thursday against Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy is getting a day off after he went 3-for-9 with three RBI, a run, two stolen bases, a walk and a strikeout over the last three games. Jordan Luplow will draw the start in left field and bat seventh.
Aug 10, 2022
Keeps running
McCarthy went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's 6-4 win over Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy's taking advantage of a regular spot in the lineup and giving fantasy managers an unexpected boost in the stolen base case category. The outfielder, who swiped bags in two consecutive games, has stolen six (caught once) over the last 21 contests. It helps that's been hitting, too. McCarthy is slashing .299/.356/.388 during his 21-game run.
Aug 9, 2022
Steals base in win
McCarthy went 0-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base in Monday's 3-0 win over the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy posted his sixth steal of the season and fifth in 20 games since he was recalled July 11. He's been a lineup regular lately, starting 13 of Arizona's 15 games since the break. The lefty-hitting outfielder is slashing .286/.348/.381 during this latest stint in the majors.
Aug 7, 2022
Takes seat Sunday
McCarthy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy started the last 11 games and will receive a day off after posting a .275/.341/.325 slash line during that stretch. Jordan Luplow will enter the lineup in left field for Arizona in the series finale.
Aug 2, 2022
Swipes fifth bag
McCarthy went 0-for-3 with two walks and a stolen base in Monday's 6-5 extra-innings loss to the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old has been busy on the basepaths since taking over as Arizona's starting left fielder, attempting a steal in three straight games and going 2-fof-3. Since being called back up in mid-July, McCarthy is slashing .333/.400/.467 through 50 plate appearances with four of his five stolen bases on the year, in addition to six doubles, three RBI and eight runs scored.
Jul 31, 2022
Becomes primary LF
Arizona general manager Mike Hazen said McCarthy will get the "lion's share" of the available playing time in left field following the trade of David Peralta to the Rays, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
That likely means the lefty-hitting McCarthy will be in the lineup against righties and could be subject to replacement by Jordan Luplow against southpaws. McCarthy has been highly productive since being recalled earlier in July, going 13-for-39 with three walks, six doubles, three RBI, three stolen bases and eight runs scored over 12 games. It should be noted that McCarthy had a similar initial surge when recalled in late May before being sent back down to Triple-A.
Jul 30, 2022
Double and steal in loss
McCarthy went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's 6-2 loss to Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy was the only Arizona batter to get beyond first base in six innings of shutout ball from Atlanta starter Ian Anderson. In the ninth, McCarthy added an RBI single. The outfielder has three multi-hit efforts in eight games since the All-Star break, batting .333 (9-for-27) in that span. He's up to a .263/.315/.432 slash line with four steals, three home runs, 12 RBI, 24 runs scored, nine doubles and a triple in 128 plate appearances. With David Peralta traded to the Rays on Saturday, McCarthy is in line for a boost in playing time, though it's unclear if he'll move into an everyday role in left field or if he'll platoon with Jordan Luplow.
Jul 26, 2022
Scores twice in win
McCarthy went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double and two runs scored in Monday's 7-0 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy found himself in the starting lineup for third time in four games since the break and is 5-for-12 with one walk, two doubles, a stolen base and four runs scored during that stretch. The lefty-hitting outfielder could replace David Peralta, who turns 35 in August, is in the final year of a contract and an ideal trade candidate.
Jul 25, 2022
Playing time on rise
McCarthy will start in left field and bat seventh in Monday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The lefty-hitting McCarthy will pick up his third start in four games and could have a hold on a regular spot in the lineup versus right-handed pitching if he continues to acquit himself well at the dish. Since his July 11 promotion from Triple-A Reno, McCarthy has gotten on base at a .364 clip while contributing four doubles and two stolen bases in seven games.
Jul 24, 2022
Collects two hits, swipes bag
McCarthy went 2-for-4 with a double, a run, an RBI and a stolen base in a 7-2 win against Washington on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy doubled in the fourth inning and singled home a run, stole second and scored as part of a four-run sixth. The 24-year-old has logged two of his three thefts in July and is slashing .300/.368/.500 with four doubles in 20 July at-bats.
Jul 17, 2022
Retreats to bench
McCarthy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy will head to the bench after he started in three of the Diamondbacks' last four games while going 4-for-12 with three doubles and a run scored. He looks to be Arizona's No. 4 outfielder behind Alek Thomas, David Peralta and Daulton Varsho, though McCarthy should still be able to pick up at least a couple of starts per week while he's up with the big club.
Jul 12, 2022
Swipes bag Monday
McCarthy recorded a walk, a stolen base and a run in Monday's 4-3 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy pinch hit for Buddy Kennedy in the eighth inning, drawing a walk. He added a steal and scored on a Sergio Alcantara single, and that run ended up being the difference. McCarthy was called up from Triple-A Reno on Monday after hitting .333 with an .882 OPS in 16 games after he was sent down in mid-June. The outfielder has a .228/.291/.405 slash line with three home runs, nine RBI, 17 runs scored and two steals in 32 major-league contests, and he's likely to be limited to a depth role unless he can hit his way into more playing time.
Jul 11, 2022
Called up by Diamondbacks
McCarthy was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Monday.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy was sent down in mid-June, and he slashed .333/.397/.485 with two triples, six doubles, 13 runs, eight RBI and four stolen bases over 16 minor-league games following his demotion. He should serve as outfield depth for Arizona after Cooper Hummel was optioned to Reno.
Jun 17, 2022
Optioned to Triple-A
McCarthy was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Friday.
ANALYSIS
He was losing out on playing time against right-handed pitchers since the return of Carson Kelly, which pushed Daulton Varsho to the outfield. This will allow McCarthy to get everyday reps at Triple-A. He slashed .228/.282/.405 with three home runs, one steal and a 34.9 percent strikeout rate in 79 MLB at-bats.
Jun 13, 2022
Losing out on playing time
McCarthy remains out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Reds.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy had a semi-regular spot in the Arizona lineup to close out May, but he now finds himself on the bench for the eighth time in 12 games to begin June. Playing time is likely to be even harder to come by for McCarthy moving forward with Daulton Varsho expected to factor into the outfield and designated-hitter mix more frequently now that catcher Carson Kelly has returned from the 10-day injured list.
Jun 9, 2022
Sitting Thursday
McCarthy is not in Thursday's lineup against the Reds.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy has been nominally atop the depth chart in right field recently, but he sits roughly half the time and will head to the bench for a second game in a row, this time with righty Tyler Mahle on the hill for the opposition. Jordan Luplow will start in right field and bat sixth.
Jun 8, 2022
Not starting Wednesday
McCarthy isn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game against Cincinnati.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy went 2-for-6 with a double, two runs and three strikeouts over the last two games, and he'll get a breather Wednesday. Jordan Luplow will start in right field and bat sixth.
Jun 8, 2022
Fills in for Thomas
McCarthy started in center field and went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Tuesday's 14-8 loss to Cincinnati.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy filled in for rookie Alek Thomas, who made a splash early after being brought up but is hitting .136 over the last 13 games. Like Thomas, McCarthy has hit a rough patch after initial success following a call-up. He entered Tuesday's contest on a 1-for-14 skid.
Jun 4, 2022
On bench Saturday
McCarthy isn't starting Saturday against the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's series opener against Pittsburgh, but he'll be out of the lineup for the third time in the last four games. Pavin Smith will start in right field while Jordan Luplow serves as the designated hitter.
Jun 4, 2022
Swats homer in win
McCarthy started in right field and went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 8-6 win over the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy, who provided an initial spark in his return from the minors, returned to the starting lineup after being held out Tuesday and Wednesday. The homer was the second of the season for McCarthy, who's batting .256 (10-for-39) with four extra-base hits, seven RBI, eight runs scored and a stolen base over 11 games since his recall. He continues to share right field with Pavin Smith, who served as the designated hitter Friday.
Jun 1, 2022
Sitting again Wednesday
McCarthy isn't in the starting lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Braves.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy will remain on the bench for the second straight game Wednesday. Pavin Smith will get the start again in right field and bat sixth in the series finale versus the Braves.
May 31, 2022
Out of lineup
McCarthy will sit Tuesday against Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy sits for just the second time in 11 games since his return from Triple-A Reno. He posted a .881 OPS in the first seven games of that stretch but went 0-for-8 with five strikeouts over the last two contests. Pavin Smith will start in right field Tuesday.
May 29, 2022
Involved in offense
McCarthy started in right field and went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy tripled in a run in the second inning then came home on Geraldo Perdomo's triple two batters later. In addition to the extra-base hits, McCarthy also made a couple of nice catches, one of which prevented additional runs. He's started seven of eight games since being called up a week ago, mostly slotting in at right field while Pavin Smith has bounced between right field, first base and DH. The game appears to have slowed down for McCarthy in his second stint in the majors this season. He's batting .333 (9-for-27) with three walks, three extra-base hits, six RBI, six runs and a stolen base during his seven-start run.
May 23, 2022
Makes third straight start
McCarthy started in right field and went 1-for-4 with a run scored in Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy found himself in the starting nine for a third straight game in right field, while Pavin Smith shifted to first base in place of Christian Walker. McCarthy has hit safely in all three games since being called up, going 6-for-13 with a double, four RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored. It looks like he and Smith will share right field for the time being.
May 22, 2022
Gets second straight start
McCarthy started in right field and went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, an RBI and three runs scored in Saturday's 7-6 extra-inning win over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Called up from Triple-A Reno on Friday, McCarthy started both games in right field and is 5-for-9 with three RBI. McCarthy, who started the year in the majors before being optioned with a .425 OPS, told Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic that he did nothing different at Reno. The major difference was getting more at-bats in the minors, and in the few opportunities he had with Arizona, he was trying to do too much. It's unclear if he's taking over for a slumping Pavin Smith, but the Diamondbacks may ride McCarthy's hot streak.
May 21, 2022
Collects two hits in win
McCarthy started in right field and went 2-for-5 with two RBI in Friday's 10-6 win over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy was called up earlier in the day and got the start in right field against a right-hander, which is normally a spot for Pavin Smith. It's unclear if the right field depth chart changed, or if this was chance to give a breather to Smith, who has a .326 OPS over the last 12 games.
May 20, 2022
Promoted, starting Friday
McCarthy was recalled from Triple-A Reno and will start in right field Friday against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy was optioned to Reno in late April, but he's recently been traveling with the big-league club as a member of the practice squad. He appeared in 13 games for Arizona prior to the demotion and hit .120/.185/.240 with a 42.9 percent strikeout rate.
Apr 25, 2022
Sent to Triple-A
McCarthy was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy won an Opening Day roster spot but didn't do much with his opportunities, hitting .120/.185/.240 while striking out in 12 of his 28 plate appearances. He's no longer needed now that fellow outfielder Jordan Luplow (oblique) is back from the injured list.
Apr 22, 2022
Launches homer in win
McCarthy started in center field and went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy, who gave primary center fielder Daulton Varsho a break for the day, homered in his first plate appearance in the second inning. This was the fourth start in 13 games for McCarthy, a spare part in the outfield part that offers a level of speed.
Apr 11, 2022
Singles, scores in loss
McCarthy started in right field and went 1-for-4 with a run scored in Sunday's 10-5 loss to the Padres.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy made his first start of the season, slotting in for right fielder Pavin Smith. The lefty-hitting outfielder got the chance amid a team-wide batting funk that didn't get much better Sunday. The 1-3 Diamondbacks are last in MLB with a .129 batting average and 15 hits through four games. Other than the ninth innings of the first and fourth game, Arizona's offense produced three runs over 34 innings.
Apr 4, 2022
Headed for roster spot
McCarthy is projected to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster as a backup outfielder, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The lefty-swinging McCarthy can play all three outfield positions, offers a speed element for manager Torey Lovullo, and played well enough to earn a spot. After a 1-for-3 with a stolen base and run scored as the starting center fielder Sunday, McCarthy is 10-for-30 with a home run, triple, double, four RBI, three stolen bases and five runs scored over 12 Cactus League games.
Oct 2, 2021
Heads back to bench
McCarthy isn't starting Saturday's game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy went 1-for-3 with a run, a walk and a strikeout Friday and will retreat to the bench for the second time in the last three games. David Peralta, Daulton Varsho and Pavin Smith will start in the outfield from left to right.
Sep 30, 2021
Out of Thursday's lineup
McCarthy is not in the lineup Thursday against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy is 3-for-16 in his past seven games and will take a seat for Thursday's contest. Daulton Varsho will man center field in the series final for the Diamondbacks.
Sep 29, 2021
Homers in loss
McCarthy went 2-for-2 with a solo home run, two runs and a walk in the loss to the Giants on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The outfielder singled and scored in the third inning before hitting a round tripper off lefty reliever Tony Watson in the seventh. The long ball was his second of the year, both of which have come in his last seven games. Over that stretch, he is 4-for-15 with three extra-base hits and a stolen base.
Sep 18, 2021
Fills in for resting Marte
McCarthy started in center field and went 1-for-4 in Friday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Astros.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy filled in for Ketel Marte, who was getting a rest day. McCarthy, who has played sporadically, has a four-game hit streak dating back to Sept. 10. He should continue to make three to four starts per week through the rest of the season.
Sep 2, 2021
Makes second straight start
McCarthy started in right field and went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base in Wednesday's 8-3 win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy walked, stole second and came around to score on a Nick Ahmed single during Arizona's six-run third inning. It was a the second consecutive start for the lefty-hitting outfielder, who was part of Tuesday's near no-hitter by San Diego lefty Blake Snell. The steal was the first for McCarthy, who had double-digit steals over three full minor-league seasons, including a career-high 29 in 2021. He's started four of the six games since being called up from Triple-A Reno and will be in the outfield mix through the end of the season. That could become an everyday job if the Diamondbacks move Pavin Smith to first base full time in place of the 30-year-old Christian Walker (.673 OPS).
Aug 28, 2021
Makes MLB debut
McCarthy started in center field and went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Friday's 7-6 extra-innings loss to the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy was called up from Triple-A Reno on Friday and made his MLB debut that night, filling in for the injured Ketel Marte (hip) in center. Marte's injury might normally clear a path to at-bats for Daulton Varsho, a catcher/outfield prospect, but he was behind the plate Friday while Carson Kelly got a breather. McCarthy had a combined .832 OPS with 15 home runs and 29 steals at Double-A Amarillo and Reno.
Aug 27, 2021
Earns call to big leagues
McCarthy was called up from Triple-A Reno prior to Friday's game against the Phillies, Conor Foley of The Scranton Times-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
A second-round selection in 2018, McCarthy has made steady progress through the Arizona organization and is now in line to make his major-league debut. The outfielder clubbed nine homers while hitting .262/.330/.508 across 212 plate appearances with Reno, and it wouldn't be surprising if he's given an extended look during the final weeks of the big-league season.
