McCarthy was removed from the Diamondbacks' roster ahead of their NL Wild Card Series matchup against Milwaukee due to an oblique injury, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

McCarthy suffered the injury during batting practice ahead of Game 1 and won't be eligible to return until the NLDS should the D-backs advance. Jace Peterson will join the active roster as McCarthy's replacement.

McCarthy will start in right field and bat seventh in Wednesday's contest versus the White Sox.

McCarthy was not part of the initial lineup, getting added after Lourdes Gurriel was scratched. It's only his third start since he was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Sept. 12.

McCarthy made it home on a Geraldo Perdomo single in the second inning and another in the eighth, then scored on an Alek Thomas sac fly in the ninth. He also swiped two bags in the contest and is now up to 12 steals on the year. The outfielder has received significant playing time this month and is performing well, slashing .324/.400/.419. His batting average sits at .292 on the season to go along with four homers.

McCarthy will hit the bench Friday against the White Sox.

The 25-year-old has been busy on the basepaths since taking over as Arizona's starting left fielder, attempting a steal in three straight games and going 2-fof-3. Since being called back up in mid-July, McCarthy is slashing .333/.400/.467 through 50 plate appearances with four of his five stolen bases on the year, in addition to six doubles, three RBI and eight runs scored.

Arizona general manager Mike Hazen said McCarthy will get the "lion's share" of the available playing time in left field following the trade of David Peralta to the Rays, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.

That likely means the lefty-hitting McCarthy will be in the lineup against righties and could be subject to replacement by Jordan Luplow against southpaws. McCarthy has been highly productive since being recalled earlier in July, going 13-for-39 with three walks, six doubles, three RBI, three stolen bases and eight runs scored over 12 games. It should be noted that McCarthy had a similar initial surge when recalled in late May before being sent back down to Triple-A.

With David Peralta traded to the Rays on Saturday, McCarthy is in line for a boost in playing time, though it's unclear if he'll move into an everyday role in left field or if he'll platoon with Jordan Luplow.
