Goes through workout Monday
Pena, who landed on first base awkwardly for the final out of Sunday's ALDS Game 2 loss to the Twins, was spotted taking infield with his teammates during Monday's workout, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena appeared to be walking around gingerly after being retired for the final out Sunday, but it seems like he got through Monday's workout with no issues. Expect him to start at shortstop as the Astros look to regain the series edge Tuesday.

Three-hit effort in loss
Pena went 3-for-4 in Tuesday's 6-2 loss to the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
All three of Pena's hits were singles. The shortstop had endured a sophomore slump for part of the campaign, but he's hitting .297 (27-for-91) in September. That's lifted his season batting average to .264 with a .707 OPS, 10 home runs, 13 stolen bases, 51 RBI and 81 runs scored over 146 contests. He's locked in for a starting role, though he still hits in the bottom third of the lineup regularly.
Sep 24, 2023
Records two steals
Pena went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Pena had gone nearly a whole month since his last steal on Aug. 25. In the 24 games between thefts, he hit .316 (31-for-98) with 10 extra-base hits, eight RBI and 20 runs scored. The second-year shortstop hasn't matched his power output from 2022, but his walk rate and on-base percentage have risen while his strikeout rate has decreased, indicating a better approach at the plate. For the year, Pena has a .262/.323/.383 slash line with 10 home runs, 13 steals, 51 RBI and 81 runs scored over 143 contests.
Sep 19, 2023
Hitting well in September
Pena went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI on Monday against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Pena delivered an RBI single in the sixth inning and later came around to score in the same frame, a continuation of his positive performance in September. He has yet to go deep but has hit .292 with three RBI and 13 runs scored across 16 games for the month. Overall, Pena has shown improved plate discipline as compared to his rookie season, though he's seen a disappointing dip in power -- highlighted by a drip in his ISO from .173 to .123.
Aug 28, 2023
Records five hits in blowout
Pena went 5-for-6 with a triple, a double and three RBI in Sunday's 17-4 win over the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Pena began his day with a double while also tripling home three runs in the eighth. He's enjoying his best month of the season at the plate, slashing .333/.426/.425 with seven RBI, 15 runs and a 13:18 BB:K in 24 games. Pena has not been able to repliacate the same power he showcased his rookie season. Sunday was his first game with multiple extra base hits since June 9 and his first game with multiple RBI since he had four July 29.
Aug 26, 2023
Swipes 11th bag
Pena went 0-for-1 with a walk and a stolen base Friday against the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Pena had an unconventional but still productive game, as he reached base on catcher interference and an error in addition to his walk. That gave him the opportunity to swipe his 11th base of the season, matching his total from 2022. Pena has maintained a .299 batting average across 22 games in August, but he has only five extra-base hits and no home runs in that span.
Aug 13, 2023
Gets breather Sunday
Pena isn't in the Astros' lineup Sunday against the Angels, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena has been red-hot at the plate lately, slashing .333/.447/.385 in 47 plate appearances since the start of August. He'll get a day to rest Sunday while Grae Kessinger starts at shortstop and bats eighth.
Aug 12, 2023
Heating up
Pena went 3-for-4 with one double, one RBI and two runs scored in Friday's victory over the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Pena has been demoted to the bottom third of the Astros lineup in five of his last six games, but this performance marks his fourth multi-hit effort in his last 10 games. Following bottoming out with a .205 average and only one home run in July, Pena has responded with 12 hits and seven walks in 43 plate appearances thus far in August. His glove keeps him in the lineup and continued production like this will help return him to the top of a potent Astros lineup.
Aug 2, 2023
Piling up multi-hit games
Pena went 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored Tuesday against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Pena tallied his fourth multi-hit performance in his last six starts, and he's also worked four free passes in that span. He had a dreadful July during which he hit just .205, but he appears to be coming out of the prolonged slump. Pena still has only a .679 OPS on the season, primarily because he has a disappointing 10 home runs across 409 plate appearances.
Jul 29, 2023
Lacking signs of improvement
Pena went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base Friday against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Pena enjoyed a productive game, nabbing his 10th stolen base of the season and second since the return from the All-Star break. Despite hitting second in the order in seven of the team's last nine games, he has also shown few signs of improvement at the plate by hitting .206 with only two RBI and four runs scored in that span. Pena has had a disappointing season overall, as he's maintained only an 82 wRC+ and .289 wOBA across 391 plate appearances for the campaign.
Jul 22, 2023
Registers ninth steal
Pena went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and two runs scored in Friday's 6-4 win over the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Pena dealt with a hamstring cramp over the weekend, but that appears to be behind him. Friday marked his first multi-hit effort since July 5 -- he went just 4-for-36 over the nine games in between. The shortstop is at a .239/.292/.381 slash line with 10 home runs, nine steals, 33 RBI and 46 runs scored through 87 contests this season.
Jul 18, 2023
Back in lineup Tuesday
Astros manager Dusty Baker said in an interview on SportsTalk 790 in Houston on Tuesday that Pena (hamstring) will be back in the lineup for Tuesday's game in Colorado.
ANALYSIS
A hamstring cramp necessitated Pena's removal from Saturday's game versus the Angels and he didn't play Sunday. However, it looks like the shortstop is good to go following Monday's off day.
Jul 16, 2023
Out of lineup Sunday
Pena (hamstring) is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Pena left Saturday's game after appearing to tweak something during his at-bat in the 10th inning. Manager Dusty Baker confirmed after the game that it's a hamstring issue for Pena, though he was optimistic that it was just a cramp, per Chandler Rome of The Athletic. Grae Kessinger will get a turn at shortstop with Pena banged up.
Jul 16, 2023
Exits with apparent injury
Pena was removed from Saturday's game versus the Angels in the 10th inning with an apparent injury, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena looked to tweak something in the back of his right leg on a swing in the top of the 10th inning. He stayed in the game to finish his plate appearance but was removed for defense prior to the bottom of the frame. The Astros should have more on Pena's condition soon.
Jul 6, 2023
Homers in return
Pena went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run Wednesday against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Pena returned from a five-game absence caused by neck stiffness. He popped his 10th homer of the season but only his second across his last 26 games. In that same span, he has only six total extra-base hits with six RBI and 13 runs scored. Pena hasn't taken the step forward some had hoped for in his second season, but he's settled in to provide decent production across the board, as he has eight stolen bases and a combined 73 runs and RBI across 77 games on the campaign.
Jul 5, 2023
Starting Wednesday
Pena (neck) is starting at shortstop and batting eighth Wednesday versus the Rockies, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena will return to the lineup after a five contest absence with neck stiffness. He currently holds a five-game hit streak, batting .261 with a homer, three RBI and four runs scored over that stretch.
Jul 4, 2023
Expected back Wednesday
Pena (neck) is expected back in the Astros' lineup Wednesday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena is out of the lineup Tuesday for a fifth straight game due to neck stiffness, but he worked out pregame and appears nearly fully healthy. Mauricio Dubon is getting another start at shortstop Tuesday.
Jul 4, 2023
Still out Tuesday
Pena (neck) remains out of the lineup for Tuesday's tilt versus the Rockies, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena did take part of Jose Urquidy's (shoulder) live batting practice session pregame but will miss a fifth straight contest with neck tightness. It still seems likely that he'll be able to avoid a stint on the injured list. Mauricio Dubon will handle shortstop Tuesday.
Jul 3, 2023
Remains out Monday
Pena (neck) is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Pena will sit out for a fourth consecutive game while he continues to contend with neck tightness. Mauricio Dubon will fill in at shortstop for Pena and bat second in the series finale in Arlington.
Jul 2, 2023
Sitting again Sunday
Pena (neck) is not in the lineup for Sunday's game versus the Rangers, Chandler Rome of The Athleticreports.
ANALYSIS
Pena will sit for the third consecutive game as he continues to deal with neck stiffness. Mauricio Dubon will receive another start at shortstop for Houston.
Jul 1, 2023
Still out Saturday
Pena (neck) isn't in the Astros' lineup Saturday against the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Neck stiffness kept Pena out of Friday's game, and it will cost him another start Saturday. While Pena continues to heal, Mauricio Dubon will fill in at shortstop and bat sixth.
Jun 30, 2023
Out with stiff neck
Pena is out of the lineup Friday due to a stiff neck, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Astros manager Dusty Baker told reporters that Pena simply had a "bad night of sleep" but probably won't be used off the bench so that the issue doesn't get any worse. Mauricio Dubon is covering shortstop and batting sixth in Friday's series opener versus the Rangers.
Jun 30, 2023
Getting breather
Pena is absent from the lineup for Friday's game versus the Rangers, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
It appears to be a routine day of rest for Pena, who will put a modest five-game hitting streak on hold. Mauricio Dubon is getting the start at shortstop.
Jun 22, 2023
Reaching base consistently
Pena went 1-for-2 with two walks and a stolen base Wednesday against the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Pena reached base at least once for the ninth consecutive game. He's maintained a .324 average and .410 on-base percentage in that span, though he has only two extra-base hits and no home runs. Pena has maintained a near-identical line to his rookie season, though he has increased his stolen base output by swiping eight bags across the first 70 games of his campaign.
Jun 18, 2023
Five-game hitting streak
Pena went 1-for-4 with a stolen base Saturday against the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Pena extended his hitting streak to five games -- it was interrupted by an absence due to illness -- with a base knock in the second inning. He went on to steal second base, his seventh of the season. Despite hitting .268, Pena has had a power outage of late with only four extra-base hits -- no home runs -- across his last 15 games. He has only one RBI in that span.
Jun 15, 2023
In lineup Thursday
Pena (illness) is starting at shortstop and batting sixth Thursday against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Pena's illness kept him out of three games, but the 25-year-old shortstop has now recovered and is ready to go Thursday. Pena was slashing .292/.320/.375 across his last five games prior to getting sick.
Jun 14, 2023
Expected to play Thursday
Astros manager Dusty Baker told reporters before Wednesday's game against Washington that Pena (illness) will return to the lineup Thursday versus the Nationals, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena has not played since Sunday while dealing with his illness, but assuming he's feeling well enough to play, he should be back for the series finale against the Nationals on Thursday.
Jun 14, 2023
Held out again Wednesday
Pena (illness) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena hasn't played since Sunday and has missed three straight contests due to illness. Mauricio Dubon is playing shortstop again and also leading off.
Jun 13, 2023
Sitting out with illness
Pena is absent from the Astros' lineup for the second game in a row Tuesday due to illness, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena wasn't feeling well Sunday and apparently still isn't 100 percent following Monday's off day. Mauricio Dubon will fill in at shortstop against Patrick Corbin and the Nationals.
Jun 11, 2023
Gets rest Sunday
Pena is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena will take a seat along with second baseman Jose Altuve and catcher Martin Maldonado in what looks to be a rest day with Sunday's series finale beginning at 12:40 p.m. ET. Grae Kessinger will get a turn at shortstop in place of Pena, who is slashing .256/.310/.333 with seven runs but no home runs, stolen bases or RBI through his first nine games of June.
Jun 7, 2023
Out of lineup Wednesday
Pena is absent from the lineup Wednesday at Toronto.
ANALYSIS
Mauricio Dubon will start at shortstop and bat leadoff versus the Blue Jays and right-hander Chris Bassitt. Pena struck out in all four of his plate appearances Tuesday as the Astros fell 5-1 to the Jays.
May 28, 2023
Lifts homer in blowout win
Pena went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and a walk in Sunday's 10-1 win over the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Pena hadn't homered in 22 games entering this weekend, but he's gone deep in back-to-back contests. During the power drought, he bit .244 (20-for-82) with five extra-base hits, and he was caught stealing four times in that span. It's been a tough start to 2023 for the shortstop, whose .247/.292/.439 slash line through 51 games isn't all that different from where he ended last year. He's added eight homers, 26 RBI, 28 runs scored and six stolen bases while maintaining a near-everyday place in the lineup.
May 28, 2023
Pops seventh homer
Pena went 2-for-4 with a double, a two-run home run and a second run scored in Saturday's 6-3 win over the A's.
ANALYSIS
He gave the Astros a quick 2-0 lead by taking Austin Pruitt deep in the top of the first inning. Pena's .247/.290/.428 slash line on the season is a near-perfect match for his .253/.289/.426 line as a rookie, but Saturday's long ball was his first in May and snapped a 22-game homer drought.
May 26, 2023
Getting night off Friday
Pena is not in the lineup Friday against the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Mauricio Dubon will cover shortstop and bat second with Jose Altuve (illness) returning at second base and hitting leadoff. Pena has been frustratingly inconsistent to begin his sophomore campaign, but he remains the primary option at short for Houston.
May 14, 2023
Receives first day off
Pena is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Pena started the first 39 games of the season for Houston, and he'll received a well-earned breather for Sunday's series finale in Chicago. Mauricio Dubon will shift to shortstop while David Hensley starts at second base.
May 7, 2023
Doubles twice in loss
Pena went 3-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI and one run scored in Saturday's 7-5 loss to the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Pena had gone five games without an extra-base hit prior to Saturday. This was his second three-hit game of the season, though he's also racked up six strikeouts over his last four contests. The shortstop is slashing .252/.300/.458 with six home runs, 18 RBI, 22 runs scored, nine doubles and six stolen bases through 33 games.
Apr 29, 2023
Mashes fifth homer of year
Pena went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's loss against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Pena's 402-foot shot to right-center in the first inning was Houston's only run of the game. Last year's World Series MVP is now on a four-game hit streak as he looks to recapture his elite October form. The shortstop is slashing .240/.301/.452 through 26 games played.
Apr 28, 2023
Drills fifth home run
Pena went 1-for-4 with a homer in Friday's 3-1 loss against Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
Pena launched a solo shot off an Aaron Nola fastball in the first inning. But that was the sole source of offense on the night for the Astros. Houston's shortstop was slashing .200/.273/.388 on April 21. Recently Pena has turned it on. In the last six games, he's raised his slash line to .240/.301/.452.
Apr 25, 2023
Pops fourth homer
Pena went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's 8-3 loss to the Rays.
ANALYSIS
The shortstop took rookie Taj Bradley deep in the third inning, briefly giving the Astros their last lead of the game at 3-2. Pena has had trouble stringing together hits so far this season, slashing just .217/.280/.413 through 23 games, but he's maintained solid fantasy production with four homers, six steals, 13 RBI and 16 runs.
Apr 22, 2023
Swipes sixth base
Pena went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a steal in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Braves.
ANALYSIS
Pena manufactured a run in the eighth inning, as he dropped down a bunt, stole second and came around to score on a Corey Julks single. The bunt single helped Pena to his first three-hit game of the season. It was a good bounce-back performance after striking out three times Friday. The second-year shortstop has his average up to .226 after a slow start to the season.
Apr 20, 2023
Blasts third homer of season in win
Pena went 1-for-3 with one homer, three RBI, two runs scored and one steal in Wednesday's 8-1 victory over Toronto.
ANALYSIS
Pena's three-run blast in the bottom of the eighth put the game out of reach for Toronto. The 2022 World Series MVP will hope to build on this effort, as he's cooled off significantly since that excellent October performance . The second-year shortstop is slashing just .211/.286/.408 so far, but he does have plenty of time to heat back up over the coming months.
Apr 16, 2023
Steals three bases
Pena went 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and three steals during Sunday's loss to Texas.
ANALYSIS
Pena swiped one bag after reaching base on a fielder's choice in the second inning before being hit by a pitch and stealing two more bags in the fourth. He then doubled and scored in the seventh. Pena had gone 13 games without a steal attempt entering Sunday. He improved his slash line to .227/.301/.409 with his second consecutive multi-hit performance.
Apr 11, 2023
Batting sixth again
Pena is down in the No. 6 spot in the Astros' lineup Tuesday versus the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Pena struggled while batting leadoff in the first eight games of the season, so he's been moved down while Chas McCormick gets some run at the top of the order. Both players have hit well since the switch, so it figures to continue for the time being.
Apr 9, 2023
Smacks second homer
Pena went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Saturday against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Pena hit from atop the order in each of Houston's first eight games, but he was dropped to sixth in the order Saturday. His performance was a mixed bag, as he struck out three times prior to going yard for a two-run shot in the ninth inning. Pena now has a pair of homers on the season, though he has just a .179/.256/.385 line across 43 plate appearances.
Apr 8, 2023
Drops to No. 6 hole
Pena is starting at shortstop and batting sixth Saturday against the Twins, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena hit atop the order in the Astros' first eight games of the season, but he'll move down the lineup after going 0-for-5 with four strikeouts Friday, which dropped his average to .171. Chas McCormick will bat leadoff Saturday as manager Dusty Baker tries to replace Jose Altuve (thumb) atop the lineup.
Apr 5, 2023
Hits first homer of season
Pena went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run, a double and an additional run scored in Wednesday's 8-2 victory over Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Pena extended the Astros' lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning with a two-run homer, his first of the season. The 2018 third-round pick hit 22 home runs across 555 plate appearances as a rookie last year, and he'll look to match, if not exceed, that mark in 2023.
Mar 31, 2023
Serves as leadoff hitter
Pena went 1-for-4 with a stolen base Thursday against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Pena was expected to drop in the batting order after hitting primarily second in 2022. However, with Jose Altuve (hand) and Michael Brantley (shoulder) sidelined, Pena instead hit from atop the order. He didn't have a particularly notable performance, though he did lead off the game with a single before proceeding to steal second base. After delivering 11 stolen bases in his rookie season, Pena could see an uptick in production due to his lineup placement and the new rules that have been implemented to benefit baserunners.
Mar 29, 2023
Sizzles during spring training
Pena saw action in 11 Grapefruit League games and compiled a .324/.361/.706 slash line with three home runs and a stolen base.
ANALYSIS
Fresh off a brilliant rookie season that he capped off with MVP honors in the ALCS and World Series, Pena already looks dialed in at the dish as he prepares to kick off his second big-league season Thursday versus the White Sox. Though manager Dusty Baker suggested earlier in spring training that Pena would slot further down in the lineup in 2023 than he did as a rookie, the 25-year-old shortstop now appears likely to open the upcoming campaign as Houston's leadoff or No. 2 hitter with Jose Altuve (thumb) Michael Brantley (shoulder) ticketed for the injured list.
Mar 5, 2023
Likely to drop in lineup
Pena is likely to drop down in the Astros' everyday lineup, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena hit second for most of the 2022 season for the Astros, but Houston manager Dusty Baker has stated that a healthy Michael Brantley will hit second when in the lineup. While the Astros lineup has strong depth, a drop in the lineup could result in fewer run-scoring opportunities for the second-year player, but also could lead to more chances to drive in runs for the defending World Series champions. In his first year of MLB action, Pena slashed .253/.289/.426 with 22 homers, 11 steals and 63 RBI in 136 games.
Nov 4, 2022
Solo homer in crucial win
Pena went 3-for-4 with a home run and an additional RBI during Thursday's 3-2 win over the Phillies in Game 5 of the World Series.
ANALYSIS
Pena recorded his second three-hit game in the postseason, and it came at the perfect time for the Houston offense. The 25-year-old got the Astros on the board in the first inning with an RBI single, and he put the Astros ahead 2-1 in the fourth inning with a solo homer off Noah Syndergaard, knocking the Phillies' starter from the game. Pena has had an outstanding postseason in his rookie campaign -- he is 18-for-54 (.333) with four homers, eight RBI and 11 runs scored. The rookie is slated to face Zack Wheeler in Game 6 with the Astros just one win away from the World Series title. Pena was 1-for-3 with an RBI double against Wheeler in Game 2.
Oct 24, 2022
Earns ALCS MVP
Pena went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and an additional run scored during Sunday's 6-5 win over the Yankees in Game 4 of the ALCS, earning the series MVP award.
ANALYSIS
Pena continued his fantastic rookie season Sunday with a massive three-run homer off Nestor Cortes that evened the score at 3-3. Pena took advantage of back-to-back walks allowed by the usually reliable Cortes, sending a cutter 408 feet into the left field seats at Yankee Stadium. This marked the rookie's third home run and sixth extra-base hit of the postseason, as he continues to shine as the successor at shortstop to Carlos Correa. Pena's next at bats will come against the Phillies, who he played in the final regular season series, going 2-for-6 with a home run.
Oct 20, 2022
Huge performance in Game 1
Pena went 3-for-4 with a solo home run during Game 1 of the ALCS in the 4-2 win over the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
The remarkable rookie season for the Houston shortstop continued Wednesday as Pena tallied three more hits including a solo shot off Frankie Montas in the seventh inning to give the Astros a three-run cushion. Pena is now 7-for-20 in the postseason, and he has homered in back to back games for the Astros. Coming into 2022 with big shoes to fill, the 25-year-old is proving that the Astros do not need Carlos Correa at shortstop to have success in the postseason.
Oct 11, 2022
Cleared to play
Pena (knee) will bat second and play shortstop in Game 1 of the NLDS against the Mariners on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Pena missed the final game of the regular season after fouling the ball off his knee, but there was never a suggestion that he was dealing with a serious injury. The Astros' extra time off during the wild-card round allowed him the time to heal.
Oct 4, 2022
X-rays negative, sitting Wednesday
Pena had X-rays on his knee come back negative after fouling a pitch off himself Tuesday, and he won't play Wednesday against the Phillies, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run before he exited Tuesday's contest, and it appears he's avoided a serious injury. The 25-year-old will rest for the final game of the regular season Wednesday and will have a week to recover ahead of Game 1 of the ALDS on Oct. 11.
Oct 2, 2022
Belts 21st long ball
Pena went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and an RBI single in Sunday's win over the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Pena led the offense Sunday, accounting for all three of Houston's runs, and extending his hitting streak to five games in the process. His home run in the first inning was his 21st of the season and his second in that five-game stretch. He is slashing .252/.288/.421 through 134 games this season.
Sep 27, 2022
Swats 20th home run
Pena went 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's win over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Pena became the sixth Astros rookie ever to hit 20 home runs in a season as he mashed a two-run shot to extend Houston's lead to eight in the eighth inning. With two runs on the day, Pena has now scored in nine of his last 11 games and has 70 runs scored on the season, good for fourth among AL rookies; his 57 RBI are fifth and his 20 home runs tied for second.
Sep 27, 2022
Back in action
Pena (face) is starting at shortstop and hitting second Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Pena left Saturday's game with a facial abrasion but only ended up missing one game due to the issue. He is hitting .260/.288/.390 with three home runs and four steals over his last 25 games.
Sep 24, 2022
Clears concussion protocol
Pena will not play Sunday against the Orioles after leaving Saturday's game, but he cleared concussion protocol, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports.
ANALYSIS
Abrasions to the face aside, the rookie seems to be doing OK after he landed hard on a dive into home plate. The team will continue to monitor Pena on Sunday to be sure. Aledmys Diaz figures to take over at shortstop in the series finale ahead of Monday's off day.
Sep 24, 2022
Day-to-day with facial abrasion
Pena left Saturday's game against the Orioles with a facial abrasion and is considered day-to-day, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena appeared to land hard on his face after diving into home plate on an Alex Bregman sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning. While it would seem Pena avoided a serious injury, the Astros could always hold him out through Monday's team off day as a precaution with the division already wrapped up.
Sep 22, 2022
Swipes 11th bag
Pena went 1-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored Wednesday against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Pena began the productive performance with his 11th stolen base of the season in the first inning before coming around to score. He then led off the eighth frame with a double to tally his second run of the contest. Pena has had at least one hit in five of his last six starts, racking up two homers, five RBI and seven runs scored in that span.
Sep 21, 2022
Power returning
Pena went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and a walk Tuesday against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Pena took Shane McClanahan deep in the third inning to account for the majority of Houston's offense and his 19th homer of the season. He hit only one home run in a 38-game stretch between July 27 and Aug. 19, but since Sept. 9 Pena has now slugged three long balls with seven RBI and 10 runs scored across 11 starts. For the season, Pena has maintained a .249/.288/.411 line across 514 plate appearances.

Gets Saturday off
Pena is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Athletics.
ANALYSIS

Sep 17, 2022
Slugs 18th homer
Pena went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Friday against the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Pena took Adrian Martinez deep in the fifth inning to tally his 18th homer of the season. He has at least one hit in 13 of his last 16 starts while maintaining a .290 average with nine runs scored in that span. Overall, Pena has slowed considerably since his hot start to the season and has a 95 wRC+ and .300 wOBA across 500 plate appearances as a result.
Sep 12, 2022
Collects three hits
Pena went 3-for-5 with a double, one RBI, two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base in Monday's 7-0 win over Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Pena opened the game's scoring with an RBI single before stealing second base and scoring in the first inning. The rookie infielder later reached base three more times and scored another run in the contest. He's now stolen 10 bases in 12 attempts this season while posting a .253/.288/.411 slash line through 117 games. Pena has gone 18-for-53 (.340) with three extra-base hits over his last 12 appearances.
Sep 10, 2022
Goes deep for 17th homer
Pena went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in a 4-3 win over the Angels on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Pena has showed decent pop from the shortstop position in his rookie season. The 24-year-old right-handed bat now has 17 home runs on the season to go along with a respectable .249 average. The clear hole in Pena's game is that he does not walk enough. He came into the game with a walk rate of 4.1% and he has an OBP of only .285. He showed an ability to get on base at a healthy rate in the minors so it is possible he will develop this skill at the major-league level as he matures.

Swipes two bags Tuesday
Pena went 2-for-4 with two steals in Tuesday's loss to the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Pena and the Astros had the green light all night on the base paths, as the Astros stole five bases. Two of those came from Pena, as he now has nine on the season. With his two hits, Pena is also riding a modest seven-game hitting streak, during which he is batting .355 (11-for-35).
Aug 31, 2022
Tallies three hits
Pena went 3-for-5 with a run scored Tuesday against the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Pena didn't get rewarded with a big performance in the box score, but he entered Tuesday's game with just one hit across his last 15 at-bats -- spanning five games. It was also only his third multi-hit performance in his last 13 starts, during which time he's hit .192 with four RBI and six runs scored. After a hot start to his rookie season, Pena has slumped significantly and owns a .246/.285/.410 line with a 24.8 percent strikeout rate across 431 plate appearances.
Aug 27, 2022
Sitting Saturday
Pena will be on the bench Saturday against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Pena will get a rest after going 1-for-10 over his last three games. David Hensley will make his MLB debut at shortstop in his place.
Aug 21, 2022
Swats homer in extra-innings loss
Pena went 1-for-5 with a solo home run, an additional RBI and two total runs scored in Saturday's 5-4 extra-innings loss to Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Pena opened the scoring with a solo shot in the fifth inning. He scored as the initial runner in the 10th and added his second RBI of the game on a groundout in the 11th, but Atlanta proved resilient in ultimately picking up the win. The rookie shortstop has gone 10-for-37 (.270) with a homer, four RBI and eight runs scored in his last nine games. For the season, he's slashing .248/.290/.421 with 16 homers, 43 RBI, 52 runs scored and seven stolen bases through 403 plate appearances.
Aug 17, 2022
Three strikeouts in return
Pena (neck) went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Pena missed one game due to neck stiffness, and he was kept quiet in his return to the lineup. He's hitting just .208 (11-for-53) with 12 strikeouts through 14 contests in August. That slump has dropped his season slash line to .249/.289/.419 through 94 games.
Aug 16, 2022
Back in action Tuesday
Pena (neck) is batting seventh and playing shortstop Tuesday in Chicago, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The neck stiffness that kept Pena out of Monday's game appears to have been minor. In 18 games since his last home run, Pena has slashed .194/.214/.239 with three doubles and four RBI.
Aug 15, 2022
Dealing with neck stiffness
Pena was removed from the lineup for Monday's game against the White Sox due to neck stiffness, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena was removed from Monday's lineup just over an hour before the start of the game, but he doesn't consider his neck injury serious and said that he's day-to-day. Mauricio Dubon is starting at shortstop and leading off.
Aug 15, 2022
Scratched from Monday's lineup
Pena was scratched from Monday's lineup against the White Sox for an undisclosed reason, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena was initially slated to start at shortstop and lead off Monday, and it's not yet clear whether an injury led to his removal from the lineup. Mauricio Dubon will take his place at shortstop while also leading off during the series opener at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Aug 13, 2022
Doubles, steals seventh base
Pena went 3-for-4 with an RBI double, a run scored and a stolen base in a 7-5 win over the Athletics on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Pena had a good night at the plate, belting his 13th double as part of a three-hit effort. He also stole his seventh base before coming in to score his 46th run of the season. The performance could mark the end of a particularly cold stretch of play -- the rookie shortstop is slashing a paltry .220/.220/.268 in 41 at-bats in August.
Aug 6, 2022
Not starting Saturday
Pena will sit Saturday against Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Pena sits after starting nine straight games, a stretch in which he struggled to a .356 OPS while going hitless six times. Aledmys Diaz (finger) will get the start at shortstop.
Jul 27, 2022
Day off Wednesday
Pena will sit Wednesday against the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Pena will sit after he went 3-for-8 with a solo home run, a double and three runs scored over the first two games of the series. The 24-year-old currently owns a eight-game hit streak, batting .303 with three homers, four RBI and six runs over that stretch. Mauricio Dubon will take over at shortstop and bat seventh in the series finale.
Jul 26, 2022
Goes deep again Monday
Pena went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a double, a walk and two total runs in a loss to the Athletics on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Pena's first-inning solo homer gave Houston an early lead, but the team never led after the third frame. The rookie shortstop also homered against Seattle on Sunday, and this was the first time in his major-league career that he's gone deep in consecutive games. Pena ranks second among rookies with 15 home runs on the season, only one behind the Mariners' Julio Rodriguez.
Jul 24, 2022
Knocks 14th homer
Pena went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Sunday's 8-5 win over the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Pena went back-to-back with Jose Altuve in the first inning as the Astros quickly jumped ahead 2-0. This gave Pena a six-game hitting streak, and he's gone 7-for-25 (.280) with three extra-base hits in that span. The rookie shortstop owns a .261/.305/.452 slash line with 14 homers, 36 RBI, 40 runs scored and six stolen bases through his first 75 major-league games.
Jul 18, 2022
Pops 13th homer
Pena went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run Sunday against the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Pena took Adam Oller yard in the fifth inning to record his 13th homer of the season. In seven games since returning from health and safety protocols, Pena has hit .207 with four RBI and two runs scored. Despite the slow stretch, Pena has still maintained a .263/.310/.454 across 284 plate appearances on the season.
Jul 10, 2022
Provides sac fly in return
Pena went 0-for-4 with an RBI in Sunday's 6-1 win over the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Pena missed three games due to the league's healthy and safety protocols. He was able to contribute a sacrifice fly for the Astros' fifth run in the contest in his return from the short absence. The rookie shortstop is 7-for-33 (.212) with three home runs, five RBI and six runs scored through seven games in July, though a four-hit, two-homer game July 3 against the Angels helped steady his recent numbers. Overall, he's slashing .266/.314/.464 through 258 plate appearances.
Jul 10, 2022
Ready to play Sunday
Pena (illness) is starting at shortstop and batting second Sunday against the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
The young shortstop sat out the past few days while in the league's health and safety protocols, but he'll rejoin the lineup for Sunday's series finale. Pena has an .818 OPS with three home runs through seven games in July.
Jul 9, 2022
Still not starting
Pena (illness) isn't in the lineup Saturday against Oakland, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena is out of the lineup for a third consecutive game due to the league's health and safety protocols, but it's encouraging that he hasn't been placed on the COVID-19 injured list. Mauricio Dubon is starting at shortstop and batting second.
Jul 8, 2022
Remains out of lineup
Pena (undisclosed) isn't starting Friday's game against the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Pena was scratched from Thursday's lineup due to the league's health and safety protocols, and he'll remain out of the starting nine for a second consecutive game. The 24-year-old traveled with the team to Oakland, so he should be considered day-to-day for now. Mauricio Dubon is starting at shortstop and batting eighth.
Jul 7, 2022
Traveling with team
Pena (COVID-19 protocols) will travel with the team to Oakland, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena was scratched from Thursday's lineup against the Royals due to health and safety protocols, but it seems likely that he'll be able to avoid a trip to the COVID-19 IL since he'll remain with the Astros during their road trip. The 24-year-old should be considered day-to-day ahead of Friday's series opener against the Athletics.
Jul 7, 2022
Scratched due to COVID-19 protocols
Pena was scratched from the lineup ahead of Thursday's game against the Royals due to health and safety protocols related to COVID-19, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The team notably hasn't placed Pena on the COVID-19-related injured list or indicated that he tested positive for the virus. He was presumably pulled from the lineup as a matter of precaution, likely due to him dealing with an illness or being viewed as a close contact of an infected person. Mauricio Dubon will pick up a start at shortstop in place of Pena.
Jul 7, 2022
Late scratch from lineup
Pena was scratched from the lineup ahead of Thursday's game with the Royals due to an unspecified reason, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The Astros haven't provided an immediate explanation behind Pena's removal from the lineup, but he's presumably dealing with an injury. Just one week ago, Pena missed a game after suffering a mouth laceration in a collision with teammate Yordan Alvarez, but he cleared the concussion protocol and proceeded to start each of the past six games, going 7-for-29 with three home runs over that stretch. Mauricio Dubon will fill in for Pena at shortstop in Thursday's series finale.
Jul 6, 2022
Pops long ball Tuesday
Pena went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 9-7 win over the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Pena tied the game at 4-4 with his fifth-inning blast. He's hit safely in seven of eight games since returning from the injured list due to a thumb injury, going 10-for-37 (.270) in that span. The rookie shortstop continues to look solid in a near-everyday role, slashing .276/.327/.482 with 12 homers, 31 RBI, 36 runs scored and six stolen bases through 62 contests.
Jul 3, 2022
Powers Sunday's victory
Pena went 4-for-5 with a two-run home run and a solo shot during Sunday's 4-2 win against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
After flying out in his first at-bat, Pena got Houston on the board with a solo shot in the fourth inning, reached on singles in the fifth and seventh and crushed a walkoff two-run blast to center off Los Angeles reliever Ryan Tepera in the ninth. The 24-year-old had been slumping of late -- going 5-for-26 over his last six games -- but broke out in a big way with his first career four-hit game and his second and third homers since the start of June. The exceptional performance boosted Pena's line to .279/.328/.479 with 11 home runs, 33 runs and 30 RBI in 60 games.
Jul 3, 2022
Strikeouts piling up
Pena went 1-for-5 with three strikeouts Saturday against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Pena started his second consecutive game after clearing concussion protocol Friday. He has gone only 1-for-10 in that span while striking out five times. Pena has also struck out at a 43.5 percent clip since returning from the injured list June 26, which has limited him just a .174 average with four runs scored across five games.
Jul 1, 2022
Clears protocol, starting Friday
Pena cleared concussion protocol and is in the lineup for Friday's game against the Angels, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena suffered a mouth laceration in a collision with teammate Yordan Alvarez (head) on Wednesday, but Pena has been cleared of a concussion and will return to face Michael Lorenzen. Alvarez's status is unclear.
Jun 30, 2022
Absent from lineup Thursday
Pena (mouth) is not in the starting lineup for Thursday's series finale versus the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Pena will miss Thursday's contest after he suffered a mouth laceration following a collision with Yordan Alvarez (head) in Wednesday's game. He was evaluated for a concussion and it remains unclear whether he suffered one or not. Pena will remain day-to-day ahead of the Astros' next series versus the Angels on Friday. Mauricio Dubon will start at shortstop and bat seventh in the series finale.
Jun 29, 2022
Being evaluated for concussion
Pena is being evaluated for a concussion following Wednesday's win over the Mets, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena is dealing with a mouth lateration but is also being examined for a concussion following Wednesday's outfield collision that forced him out of the game. The 24-year-old is traveling back to Houston with the team Wednesday, but it's not yet clear whether he'll be available to begin the Astros' series against the Yankees.
Jun 29, 2022
Exit attributed to mouth laceration
Pena's teammate, Justin Verlander, said that the rookie shortstop exited Wednesday's 2-0 win over the Mets in the eighth inning with a mouth laceration, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Dusty Baker declined to discuss the nature of the injuries Pena and Yordan Alvarez sustained in their outfield collision, but Verlander was at least willing to give the media with an update on the former player. Assuming Pena doesn't require any sort of major dental surgery and avoided any further injuries in the collision, he'll have a good chance at being back in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Yankees. Pena, who went 1-for-4 at the plate before his exit, looked as though he was initially going to stay in the game, but he ultimately walked off to the dugout after consulting with team trainers.
Jun 29, 2022
Leaves after collision with Alvarez
Pena was removed from Wednesday's game against the Mets in the eighth inning after he was involved in a collision in the outfield with teammate Yordan Alvarez, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. He went 1-for-4 before departing from the contest.
ANALYSIS
Both players were shaken up in the incident, but Alvarez appeared to absorb the brunt of the collision. Pena was the first of the two to get up from the field and was able to walk to the dugout under his own power, while the Astros called out a cart for Alvarez. The nature and extent of the injuries to Pena and Alvarez likely won't be announced until after the contest, but both could be in danger of missing time. Mauricio Dubon came off the bench to replace Pena at shortstop.
Jun 27, 2022
Doubles in return
Pena went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored Sunday against the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Pena was activated from the injured list Sunday after recovering from a thumb injury. He struck out in his other three at-bats but managed a two-out double in the fourth inning prior to coming around to score. Pena should be locked into the starting shortstop role for the Astros, and he will look to build upon his impressive .277/.332/.472 line across 214 plate appearances.
Jun 26, 2022
Comes off IL, as expected
Houston reinstated Pena (thumb) from the 10-day injured list Sunday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The Astros optioned outfielder Chas McCormick to Triple-A Sugar Land to clear room on the 26-man active roster for Pena, who had been sidelined since June 13 with left thumb discomfort. Though the rookie wasn't sent out on a minor-league rehab assignment while he was on the shelf, he proved his health by completing multiple workouts that included a full array of baseball activities. Expect Pena to immediately reclaim duties as the Astros' everyday shortstop after batting .277 with nine home runs, six stolen bases, 27 RBI and 27 runs in 54 games prior to landing on the IL.
Jun 25, 2022
Likely to return Sunday
Pena (thumb) will likely be reinstated from the 10-day injured list prior to Sunday's game against the Yankees, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena was eligible to return from the IL as early as Friday, but the Astros wanted to give him a few extra days to rest prior to returning to game action. Assuming the 24-year-old is activated Sunday, he'll be able to rest during the Astros' scheduled day off Monday to help ease him back into action. Once he's officially activated, Pena will reclaim his role as Houston's primary shortstop after he slashed .277/.333/.471 with nine homers, 27 runs, 27 RBI and six stolen bases to begin the season.
Jun 24, 2022
Feeling good but not activated
Pena (thumb) said Friday that he's feeling great, but he won't be activated off the injured list just yet, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Friday is the first day that Pena is eligible to return from the injured list, but despite the fact that he seemingly feels fine, he'll wind up missing at least one more day. The Astros have yet to specify exactly when he'll be back, but it looks as though he should return within the next few days.
Jun 23, 2022
Participates in pregame activities
Pena (thumb) participated in all pregame activities prior to Thursday's matchup against the Yankees, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena has steadily increased his workload since landing on the 10-day injured list with left thumb discomfort last week and is eligible to be activated as early as Friday. While manager Dusty Baker said Thursday that a Friday return "might be a little quick," he was pleased with Pena's progress, so it wouldn't be surprising to see the shortstop return sometime this weekend or early next week.
Jun 21, 2022
Increases activities Tuesday
Pena took swings in the batting cage and was spotted fielding ground balls Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
In his most extensive workout since landing on the 10-day injured list six days ago due to left thumb injury, Pena looked to be taking part without any discomfort. He'll be eligible to come off the IL on Friday, but the Astros haven't officially indicated that he'll be cleared to play by then. More clarity on Pena's situation should become available within the next day or two.
Jun 17, 2022
Taking part in some baseball work
Pena (thumb) is participating in baseball activities, though he's not yet fielding groundballs or swinging a bat, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old landed on the injured list Wednesday with left thumb discomfort, so it's a good early sign he wasn't completely shut down from baseball activities. Pena isn't expected resume swinging a bat for at least a week, so he shouldn't be expected to return from the 10-day injured list when first eligible June 24.
Jun 15, 2022
Heads to IL with thumb discomfort
The Astros placed Pena on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with left thumb discomfort.
ANALYSIS
Though general manager James Click said in a radio appearance earlier Wednesday that Pena's thumb injury wasn't severe, the American League Rookie of the Year candidate will remain sidelined through at least next weekend while he heals up. Aledmys Diaz started at shortstop in Tuesday's 4-3 win and will likely serve as the primary option at the position while Pena is on the shelf.
Jun 15, 2022
Thumb injury not considered severe
Astros general manager James Click said Wednesday that the "initial read" on Pena's left thumb injury is that the rookie isn't dealing with anything severe, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Click noted that Pena flew back to Houston on Tuesday to undergo additional tests on his thumb, and the Astros plan to evaluate him again Wednesday. With that in mind, Pena doesn't look like he'll be back in Arlington on Wednesday for the Astros' series finale with the Rangers. Aledmys Diaz replaced Pena at shortstop Tuesday in Houston's 4-3 win.
Jun 14, 2022
Out with wrist injury
Pena is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rangers after suffering a left wrist injury in Monday's 5-3 loss, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run Monday and played the full eight innings in the field, but he looked to have hurt his wrist while making a diving attempt at a ball at one point during the contest. Astros manager Dusty Baker didn't suggest after the game that Pena's injury was anything significant, so the rookie may just be sitting Tuesday for precautionary purposes. Aledmys Diaz replaces Pena at shortstop.
Jun 12, 2022
Homer, steal in win
Pena went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, an additional run scored and a stolen base in Sunday's 9-4 win over the Marlins. He was also hit by a pitch.
ANALYSIS
Pena stretched the Astros' lead to 3-0 with his two-run shot in the fourth inning. He's gone 5-for-16 (.313) with three of his six stolen bases this year in his last five games. The rookie shortstop has maintained a solid .277/.330/.468 slash line with nine homers, 27 RBI and 26 runs scored through 53 contests as a regular presence in the bottom half of the lineup.
Jun 11, 2022
Manages steal in loss
Pena went 0-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's 5-1 loss to the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Pena reached on an error, stole second and scored on a Jose Altuve double in the fifth inning, but that was the only run the Astros could muster. Through nine games in June, Pena has yet to record hits in consecutive contests. He's cooled off to a .270/.322/.449 slash line with eight home runs, five steals, 25 RBI and 24 runs scored in 52 games overall, though he's still seeing a near-everyday role at shortstop.
Jun 8, 2022
Day off Wednesday
Pena isn't starting Wednesday against the Mariners, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena went 4-for-11 with two RBI, a stolen base, a walk and three strikeouts over the last three games, and he'll get a breather during Wednesday's series finale against Seattle. Aledmys Diaz will start at shortstop and bat seventh.
Jun 8, 2022
Two hits, stolen base in win
Pena went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's win over the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Pena ripped an RBI single off Chris Flexen in the bottom of the fourth frame before later adding another single and stolen base in the seventh inning. The stolen base was his fourth of the year and he has now secured three multi-hit efforts in six contests to open June. Pena is batting .278 with eight homers, 25 RBI, 23 runs and four stolen bases over 176 at-bats in 49 games in his first season as the Astros' primary shortstop.
Jun 6, 2022
Still collecting hits
Pena went 2-for-4 with an RBI on Sunday against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Pena's production has slowed a bit of late, as he's tallied only two RBI across his last 11 starts. However, he's still collected four multi-hit performances in that span, good for a .256 batting average. Pena has been very impressive in his rookie season, maintaining a 135 wRC+ and .349 wOBA across 186 plate appearances.
May 29, 2022
Pops eighth homer
Pena went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Pena went deep off Mariners starter Marco Gonzales in the second inning. That was Pena's fourth homer in May and his eighth long ball of the year. The shortstop has been steady with a .290/.340/.510 slash line, 23 RBI, 22 runs scored, three stolen bases, six doubles and a triple through 159 plate appearances in his first big-league season.
May 28, 2022
Wrapping up strong month
Pena went 2-for-4 with a double Friday against the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Pena hit a ground-rule double in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to seven games -- three of which have been multi-hit performances. He's hit very well for the majority of May, maintaining a .385 average to go along with three home runs, 12 RBI and eight runs scored in 19 games. For the campaign, he owns a .299/.351/.511 line across 151 plate appearances.
May 25, 2022
Day off Wednesday
Pena isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Pena will get a breather after he hit .357 with a homer, three runs, two RBI and two stolen bases while starting in the last eight games. Aledmys Diaz is starting at shortstop and batting sixth.
May 22, 2022
Tallies third stolen base
Pena went 1-for-3 with a stolen base Saturday against the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Pena shifted down to the bottom of the order for the first time since April 25, though that didn't stop him from being productive. He collected a two-out single in the second inning and proceeded to steal second base -- his third swipe of the season. Since returning from a knee injury, Pena has gone 5-for-17 with a solo home run, two runs scored and two stolen bases across five games. Overall, he owns a .279/.338/.508 line in 136 plate appearances.
May 18, 2022
Homers in return
Pena went 2-for-5 with a solo home run Tuesday against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Pena returned from a four-game absence caused by a knee injury, and he recorded his seventh home run of the season in his first plate appearance. He's also riding a 10-game hitting streak, during which he has gone yard three times while driving in 11 and scoring six runs. Pena has put together an impressive .282/.341/.536 line across 123 plate appearances to begin the campaign.
May 17, 2022
Good to go
Pena (knee) will bat seventh and play shortstop Tuesday against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Pena hasn't played since Thursday while recovering from a sore knee, but he'll return here without requiring a trip to the injured list. He's still carrying a nine-game hitting streak he recorded prior to the injury, a stretch in which he slashed .448/.469/.724 with a pair of homers and a steal.
May 16, 2022
Remains out
Pena (knee) remains on the bench for Monday's game against Boston, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena has been out since Thursday with a sore right knee. He went through an on-field workout Monday but evidently wasn't cleared to play. Mauricio Dubon will get the start at shortstop.
May 16, 2022
Going through workouts
Pena (knee) went through baseball activities in front of the Astros coaching staff and training staff Monday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena has been dealing with a sore right knee and hasn't played since Thursday. His extensive workout seems to a test of whether he's ready to play Monday against the Red Sox, with a trip to the injured list potentially in play if it looks like he'll still need several more days to recover.
May 15, 2022
Knee still sore
Pena (knee) woke up sore Sunday and is being held out of the lineup against the Nationals as a precaution, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
With a soreness issue like this, he could wake up sore on future days, so it's hard to say when he will be cleared to return, but it does sound like he is truly day-to-day. Aledmys Diaz is starting at shortstop Sunday.
May 15, 2022
Out again Sunday
Pena (knee) is not in Sunday's lineup against the Nationals, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Astros made it seem like Pena would likely be back Sunday, but that will not be the case. Aledmys Diaz is starting at shortstop and hitting sixth.
May 14, 2022
Remains out of lineup
Pena (knee) isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
General manager James Click said Saturday that Pena isn't expected to require a trip to the injured list, but the shortstop will remain out of the lineup for a second straight game. Aledmys Diaz will start at shortstop and bat seventh.
May 14, 2022
Unlikely to need injured list
Pena (knee) isn't expected to require a trip to the injured list, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena left Thursday's game against the Twins with right knee discomfort and didn't play Friday against the Nationals. The Astros' Saturday lineup has yet to be released, but it looks as though Pena won't be out too much longer even if he's not quite ready to return.

Pena (knee) isn't starting Friday against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Pena was removed from Thursday's game against the Twins due to right knee discomfort, and he was expected to be out of the lineup for Friday's series opener in Washington. Likely out Friday
Pena (knee) isn't likely to play Friday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena exited Thursday's game due to discomfort in his right knee. It's not clear whether the injury will force a stint on the injured list, though he is likely to miss the team's series opener against the Nationals on Friday. Aledmys Diaz (undisclosed) is also battling an undisclosed injury, leaving Niko Goodrum as the likeliest candidate to start at shortstop.

Managing right knee discomfort
Pena exited Thursday's game against the Twins due to right knee discomfort, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena suffered his injury in the top of the fourth inning and was replaced defensively in the bottom half of the frame. He's considered day-to-day for now but will presumably undergo further testing to determine his status for Friday's series opener in Washington. If Pena is forced to miss time, Aledmys Diaz (undisclosed) and Niko Goodrum should see increased playing time at shortstop.

Removed from Thursday's game
Pena was removed from Thursday's game against the Twins in the bottom of the fourth inning with an apparent injury, Julia Morales of AT&T SportsNet Southwest reports.
ANALYSIS
Pena was effective early in Thursday's matchup, as he went 3-for-3 with a double and a run. However, he was examined by trainers after singling in the top of the fourth inning. Although the 24-year-old initially remained in the game, Aledmys Diaz (undisclosed) took his place at shortstop in the bottom half of the inning. The nature and severity of Pena's injury aren't yet clear.

Drives in two, scores once
Pena went 1-for-3 with two walks, two RBI and a run scored Tuesday against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Pena delivered an RBI in each of his first two plate appearances, the latter coming on a single. He also walked to lead off the sixth inning before coming around to score. Though Pena has dropped in the order since a brief stint as the team's leadoff hitter, he is in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak during which he's collected seven RBI and four runs scored while also tallying a stolen base. Across 110 plate appearances on the campaign, he is hitting .245/.318/.490.

Sitting in series finale
Pena is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Unless he's used off the bench as a pinch-hitter, Pena will put his five-game hitting streak on hold while he sits for the second time in five games. Aledmys Diaz will spell Pena at shortstop.

Solo shot in win
Pena went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a 3-2 win Thursday over Detroit.

After a rough 11-game stretch where he went 4-for-40 with 15 strikeouts, the rookie is 4-for-10 with two homers and five RBI. 10 of his 20 hits have gone for extra bases and the 24-year-old has posted a .500 SLG despite only batting .233.

Two hits, stolen base
Pena went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's 4-0 win against the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Pena singled and stole second in the third inning and brought home two runs with another single in the sixth. The theft is the 24-year-old's first surprisingly enough, as his sprint speed of 29.2 feet per second ranks 13th in MLB and he had five swipes in 30 games at the Triple-A level.

Goes deep Monday
Pena went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in a 3-0 victory versus the Mariners on Monday.
ANALYSIS
The Astros were leading by one run in the sixth inning before Pena provided some cushion with a two-run, 422-foot shot to left field. The hit was just his second in his past four contests, though both knocks have left the yard. Pena is hitting only .215 on the season, but he has collected five homers, 12 RBI and 14 runs.

Replaces hurt Altuve as leadoff man
Pena will start at shortstop and bat leadoff in Wednesday's game against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Pena will make his second consecutive start out of the leadoff spot and looks poised to remain atop the lineup against both right- and left-handed pitching for at least the next week and a half after Jose Altuve (hamstring) was placed on the injured list Wednesday. The 24-year-old rookie provided a spark in the table-setting role in Tuesday's 7-2 loss, going 1-for-4 with a solo blast and an additional run.
Apr 20, 2022
Homers, scores twice
Pena went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored in a 7-2 loss Tuesday against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Pena reached on a catcher's interference and scored in the third and added a solo home run in the seventh. The top-prospect has gotten off to a great start for the Astros, leading the team with six extra-base hits and posting a 1.014 OPS. The 24-year-old had only played 30 minor league games above high-A level prior to this season and has shown he belongs in the big leagues so far.

Receives first day off
Pena is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Apr 17, 2022
Set for breather Sunday
Pena will not be in Sunday's lineup against the Mariners, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
This is a planned day off for Pena, as manager Dusty Baker has rotated rest days for all regulars in the lineup early this season. Pena had another strong night at the dish Saturday, collecting three hits and a triple with two runs scored an RBI. He's now hitting .345 on the season across 32 plate appearances. Aledmys Diaz or Niko Goodrum are likely to get the start at shortstop Sunday in Pena's absence.
Apr 10, 2022
Three more hits
Pena went 3-for-5 with a double and a run in a 4-1 win against the Angels on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
That's now three hits on two occasions for the young shortstop, who doubled in the first inning, singled in the third and singled and scored in the eighth. Though the move was most likely due to veterans Jose Altuve and Michael Brantley receiving a rest day, manager Dusty Baker expressed confidence in Pena by moving him up to the No. 2 spot in the order for Sunday's game.
Apr 9, 2022
Records first hit and homer
Pena went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and a double in a 13-6 triumph over the Angels on Friday.
ANALYSIS
The number 71 prospect in MLB notched his first big league hit with an infield single in the second inning and later homered and doubled in the seventh. Pena should see ample opportunity to produce in a potent Houston offense though he'll most likely remain in the bottom third of the order for the foreseeable future.
Apr 4, 2022
Crushes two homers Sunday
Pena slugged his first two spring homers in Sunday's game against the Nationals, raising his line to .389/.421/.778 through 19 plate appearances.
ANALYSIS
He was already locked into the starting shortstop role, but this is going to give him some extra helium heading into the season. After hitting .287/.346/.598 with 10 homers and five steals in just 30 Triple-A games last year, Pena looks primed for success at the big-league level. He could even lead off for the Astros, which would obviously be a boon for him fantasy-wise. Despite his potential, the hype arguably hasn't caught up, so you can still snag him off the wire or late in fantasy drafts in a lot of leagues.

Named frontrunner for starting gig
Astros manager Dusty Baker said Wednesday that Pena is the current frontrunner for the team's starting shortstop job as Opening Day approaches, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Baker added that Diaz will factor into the discussion at shortstop as well, but both Pena and Diaz may just be keeping the position warm for free agent Carlos Correa, whom the Astros continue to meet with about potentially re-signing with the team. Pena has yet to make his MLB debut, but he's a top prospect in the Houston system who turned in an impressive debut season at Triple-A Sugar Land in 2021. Though he didn't debut for Sugar Land until late August after he was sidelined to begin last year while recovering from wrist surgery, Pena posted a .944 OPS while going 5-for-6 on the basepaths and striking out in 26.3 percent of his 133 plate appearances.
