Pena went 3-for-7 with a homer, four RBI and a steal over the last two games, and he'll get his first day off since April 17. Aledmys Diaz will start at shortstop and bat seventh.

Pena went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's 4-0 win against the Mariners.

Pena singled and stole second in the third inning and brought home two runs with another single in the sixth. The theft is the 24-year-old's first surprisingly enough, as his sprint speed of 29.2 feet per second ranks 13th in MLB and he had five swipes in 30 games at the Triple-A level.

Pena went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in a 3-0 victory versus the Mariners on Monday.

The Astros were leading by one run in the sixth inning before Pena provided some cushion with a two-run, 422-foot shot to left field. The hit was just his second in his past four contests, though both knocks have left the yard. Pena is hitting only .215 on the season, but he has collected five homers, 12 RBI and 14 runs.

Pena went 1-for-5 with a three-run homer, two runs scored and a walk during Friday's 11-7 victory against the Blue Jays.

Pena will start at shortstop and bat leadoff in Wednesday's game against the Angels.

Pena will make his second consecutive start out of the leadoff spot and looks poised to remain atop the lineup against both right- and left-handed pitching for at least the next week and a half after Jose Altuve (hamstring) was placed on the injured list Wednesday. The 24-year-old rookie provided a spark in the table-setting role in Tuesday's 7-2 loss, going 1-for-4 with a solo blast and an additional run.

Pena is slashing .345/.375/.621 while starting the first eight games of the season and will take a seat for Sunday's series finale. Aledmys Diaz will take over at shortstop for Houston.

This is a planned day off for Pena, as manager Dusty Baker has rotated rest days for all regulars in the lineup early this season. Pena had another strong night at the dish Saturday, collecting three hits and a triple with two runs scored an RBI. He's now hitting .345 on the season across 32 plate appearances. Aledmys Diaz or Niko Goodrum are likely to get the start at shortstop Sunday in Pena's absence.

That's now three hits on two occasions for the young shortstop, who doubled in the first inning, singled in the third and singled and scored in the eighth. Though the move was most likely due to veterans Jose Altuve and Michael Brantley receiving a rest day, manager Dusty Baker expressed confidence in Pena by moving him up to the No. 2 spot in the order for Sunday's game.

The number 71 prospect in MLB notched his first big league hit with an infield single in the second inning and later homered and doubled in the seventh. Pena should see ample opportunity to produce in a potent Houston offense though he'll most likely remain in the bottom third of the order for the foreseeable future.

Pena slugged his first two spring homers in Sunday's game against the Nationals, raising his line to .389/.421/.778 through 19 plate appearances.

He was already locked into the starting shortstop role, but this is going to give him some extra helium heading into the season. After hitting .287/.346/.598 with 10 homers and five steals in just 30 Triple-A games last year, Pena looks primed for success at the big-league level. He could even lead off for the Astros, which would obviously be a boon for him fantasy-wise. Despite his potential, the hype arguably hasn't caught up, so you can still snag him off the wire or late in fantasy drafts in a lot of leagues.

Astros manager Dusty Baker said Wednesday that Pena is the current frontrunner for the team's starting shortstop job as Opening Day approaches, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports.

Baker added that Diaz will factor into the discussion at shortstop as well, but both Pena and Diaz may just be keeping the position warm for free agent Carlos Correa, whom the Astros continue to meet with about potentially re-signing with the team. Pena has yet to make his MLB debut, but he's a top prospect in the Houston system who turned in an impressive debut season at Triple-A Sugar Land in 2021. Though he didn't debut for Sugar Land until late August after he was sidelined to begin last year while recovering from wrist surgery, Pena posted a .944 OPS while going 5-for-6 on the basepaths and striking out in 26.3 percent of his 133 plate appearances.
