Placed on injured list
The White Sox placed Scholtens on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a left calf strain, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
With just eight days left in the regular season, Scholtens' trip to the IL will force him to miss the rest of the year. He will finish his rookie campaign with a 5.29 ERA and 1.53 WHIP through 85 innings alongside a 58:30 K:BB. Declan Cronin was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte in a corresponding move.

Works out of bullpen Wednesday
Scholtens was deployed in relief in Wednesday's 13-3 loss to the Nationals, giving up six runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one over two innings.
ANALYSIS
Wednesday had been Scholtens' turn in the rotation, but he looks as though he's lost hold of his starting role after he went 0-4 with an 8.10 ERA and 1.95 WHIP in 26.2 innings over his previous six outings. Manager Pedro Grifol instead treated Wednesday's contest as more of a bullpen day, but Scholtens didn't fare any better while entering the game in the bottom of the second rather than starting. Scholtens will most likely continue to work out of the bullpen for the final nine games of the season.

Trounced by Twins
Scholtens (1-9) took the loss Friday as the White Sox were routed 10-2 by the Twins, coughing up six runs (five earned) on seven hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
A second-inning grand slam by Royce Lewis set the tone for Scholtens' outing, and the right-hander needed 94 pitches (54 strikes) to record only 12 outs. He remains winless since moving into the rotation on a full-time basis at the beginning of August, stumbling to a 6.00 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 34:16 K:BB through 45 innings, but the White Sox don't have any better starting options. Scholtens' next trip to the mound is likely to come next week on the road against the Nationals.

Takes eighth loss
Scholtens (1-8) took the loss Sunday, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings in a 3-2 loss against the Tigers. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Detroit's three-run third inning proved to be enough to stick Scholtens with the loss, as he remains without a win since June 25. The 29-year-old Scholtens delivered three consecutive quality starts after joining the White Sox rotation in early August, though he's now allowed 19 runs across 22.2 innings over his subsequent five starts. Overall, his ERA is up to 4.44 with a 1.42 WHIP and 52:25 K:BB across 79 innings this season. Scholtens is currently lined up for a home matchup with the Twins in his next outing.

Shelled in 7th loss
Scholtens (1-7) took the loss Monday against the Royals, allowing five runs on nine hits and one walk over 3.2 innings . He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Monday marked the third time in Scholtens' last four outings that he has allowed five earned runs. The 29-year-old rookie has struggled in his seven starts since entering the White Sox rotation post-trade deadline. He's scuffled to the tune of a 5.50 ERA and 6.3 K/9 over 36 innings since August 1.
Aug 30, 2023
Sharp in no-decision
Scholtens came away with a no-decision Tuesday in the White Sox's 9-3 loss to the Orioles, allowing one run on six hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out one without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander wasn't dominant, managing only five swinging strikes among his 91 pitches, but he generated plenty of weak contact and didn't give up an extra-base hit before exiting the game with the score tied 1-1. It was a solid bounce-back effort for Scholtens after he'd been tagged for 10 runs over his prior two starts, but since joining the rotation for good at the beginning of August he's posted a 4.73 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 24:10 K:BB through 32.1 innings. He'll likely next take the mound early next week in Kansas City.
Aug 25, 2023
Struggles again Thursday
Scholtens allowed five runs on six hits and no walks while striking out four batters over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against Oakland on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens made it through three scoreless frames before serving up a three-run homer to Shea Langeliers in the fourth. Langeliers tagged him for another long ball in the sixth, coming two batters after a Brent Rooker solo shot, and that ended Scholtens' night on a sour note after what had been a promising beginning. The right-hander has given up 10 runs over 8.2 frames across his past two starts following an intriguing stretch during which he posted three straight quality starts.
Aug 20, 2023
Cooled at Coors Field
Scholtens (1-6) took the loss against Colorado on Saturday, allowing five runs on five hits and five walks while striking out two batters over three innings.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens came into the contest with three straight quality starts since entering the rotation full-time July 29, but he couldn't extend that streak in the hitter-friendly confines of Coors Field. Though the stadium has a reputation as a launchpad for homers, that wasn't the right-hander's problem Saturday. In fact, Scholtens didn't allow any extra-base hits, but he threw only 43 of 86 pitches for a strike and walked a season-high five batters, including four in a three-run first inning. He'll probably maintain his spot in the rotation for a White Sox squad that is well out of postseason contention, but this was a definite dud following the promising start to his big-league career as a starter.

Pitches well again but takes loss
Scholtens (1-5) took the loss against Milwaukee on Saturday, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out five batters over 6.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens picked up his third straight quality start, but he doesn't have a win to show for it. The right-hander had a 2-0 lead through six frames Saturday before allowing three of the four batters he faced in the seventh to reach base. All three came around to score, saddling Scholtens with a disappointing defeat. Despite the difficulty getting into the win column, he's gained traction as a viable fantasy starter, posting a 2.95 ERA and 17:5 K:BB over 18.1 innings since moving into the rotation full-time Aug. 1.
Aug 6, 2023
Nabs another quality start
Scholtens did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk over six innings against the Guardians. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens was effective Sunday, holding Cleveland to just a pair of earned runs on a Gabriel Arias homer in the fifth inning. The 29-year-old rookie has pitched well over his last two starts, allowing just three earned runs on nine hits over 12 innings while striking out 12. Overall, Scholtens is 1-4 with a 3.06 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 35:14 K:BB across 50 innings this season. He's slated for an extended stay in Chicago's rotation following the trades of Lance Lynn and Lucas Giolito. Scholtens is tentatively lined up for a home matchup with the Brewers in his next outing.
Aug 5, 2023
Remains in rotation
Scholtens will start Sunday's game against the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens moved from the bullpen into a starting role Tuesday after the White Sox dealt away Lance Lynn and Lucas Giolito and held his own in a matchup with a tough Texas lineup, covering six innings and striking out six while allowing one earned run on three hits and one walk. The right-hander will pick up his fourth start of the season Sunday and looks poised for an extended stay in the rotation.
Aug 1, 2023
Takes tough loss
Scholtens (1-4) took the loss Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk over six innings against the Rangers. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens carved up the potent Rangers offense Tuesday, needing just 80 pitches to complete six innings, but the White Sox didn't provide him with any run support and he left the game trailing 1-0. The 29-year-old rookie's only blemish came on a solo shot by Mitch Garver in the fifth inning. The majority of Scholtens' appearances have come as a reliever this year, but this strong outing may earn him some more starts down the stretch.
Aug 1, 2023
Gets starting nod Tuesday
Scholtens is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Rangers at Globe Life Field, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens has previously made two starts this season with the White Sox, but his last five appearances with the club has come as a reliever, with the right-hander covering no more than two innings in any of those outings. As such, Scholtens shouldn't be counted on to work deep into Tuesday's start, though the 29-year-old should have a decent chance at holding down a rotation spot moving forward. Even though Chicago returned Mike Clevinger from the injured list last week, the team still has one permanent opening in the five-man rotation after recently trading away Lucas Giolito and Lance Lynn.
Jul 24, 2023
Working out of bullpen
Scholtens has made his last three appearances as a reliever, striking out one over 3.2 innings while allowing one unearned run on four hits and two walks.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens made his final appearance before the All-Star break as a starter, but after surrendering three runs on 11 hits in four innings against the Blue Jays in that July 6 outing, he's since moved back to the bullpen. Touki Toussaint has taken over as the White Sox's No. 5 starter and thus far performed well enough to hold down that role until Chicago gets Mike Clevinger (biceps) back from the 15-day injured list.
Jul 7, 2023
Dinged for 11 hits in start
Scholtens allowed three runs one 11 hits and no walks while striking out one batter over four-plus innings in a no-decision against Toronto on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens made just the second start of his major-league career, though he's frequently pitched multiple innings in long relief. The right-hander fooled few Blue Jays batters, notching just four whiffs and one punchout, so he was fortunate to give up only three runs despite yielding a career-worst 11 hits. Scholtens has been pretty good out of the bullpen this season, posting a 2.78 ERA over 22.2 innings. It's uncertain if he'll get another chance to start after the All-Star break with both Mike Clevinger (biceps) and Michael Kopech (shoulder) approaching activation from the injured list.
Jul 6, 2023
Getting ball in second game
Scholtens will start for the White Sox in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the White Sox, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
All but one of Scholtens' 10 appearances for the White Sox this season have come in relief, but he's provided plenty of bulk in going four innings each of his last two times out. Chicago does still figure to use plenty of arms in the nightcap, so they'll be hoping for length out of Lance Lynn in the afternoon tilt.
Jun 25, 2023
Nabs win in bulk role
Scholtens (1-2) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out three over four scoreless innings to earn the win Sunday over the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens ended up pitching the most innings of four White Sox pitchers in the contest, piggybacking opener Tanner Banks's 2.2 innings of one-run ball. Scholtens' third stint in the big leagues has been much more effective than his first two -- he's pitched 6.2 consecutive scoreless innings since he was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on June 16. He's at a 2.31 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 13:9 K:BB through 23.1 innings over nine outings (one start) this season. With Mike Clevinger (biceps) likely out through the end of the month, Scholtens could get one more chance to cover bulk-relief innings. That would line up as a road appearance versus the Athletics, though it's far from a guarantee he'll get the assignment.
Jun 17, 2023
Secures first save
Scholtens picked up the save in Saturday's 4-3 victory over the Mariners, striking out one over a perfect inning.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday and tossed a scoreless inning in his first appearance since May 31. He was called upon again Saturday, but this time in an extra-innings save opportunity, as Joe Kelly and Kendall Graveman were likely unavailable after recently pitching back-to-back days. Scholtens didn't disappoint and secured his first career save with a perfect inning, but he isn't expected to be used in high-leverage situations on a regular basis.

Summoned to big leagues
Scholtens was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens is taking Mike Clevinger's (biceps) spot on the roster and looks like a candidate to take his place in the rotation, as well, if he's not needed in relief before then. The righty holds a 3.24 ERA and 9:8 K:BB over 16.2 innings covering one start and four relief appearances with the big club this season.
Jun 2, 2023
Optioned to Triple-A
Scholtens was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Friday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens will return to Charlotte after being called up May 22, appearing in three games, including one start, over his second stint with the White Sox this season. The right-hander performed well, allowing five runs on eight hits and six walks while striking out five batters over 13.2 innings in those outings. Scholtens has certainly shown enough on the major-league mound to garner another opportunity with Chicago later this summer.
Jun 1, 2023
Mops up behind Lance Lynn
Scholtens worked in long relief in Wednesday's 12-5 loss to the Angels, tossing four innings and striking out one while allowing two earned runs on two hits and two walks.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens had made his previous appearance as a starter back on Saturday, but the White Sox made him available out of the bullpen on three days' rest for the series finale with the Halos. With starter Lance Lynn getting lit up for eight earned runs over just four innings, Scholtens was thrust into mop-up duty and generally kept the Anaheim bats quiet, aside from surrendering a two-run home run to Taylor Ward. With Mike Clevinger (wrist) expected to return from the 15-day injured list and reclaim his spot at the back end of the Chicago rotation, Scholtens could soon be headed back to Triple-A Charlotte so that he can make regular starts.
May 28, 2023
Mediocre in first career start
Scholtens did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings against the Tigers. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens took the spot of Mike Clevinger (wrist) in the White Sox rotation, getting his first MLB start after being called up earlier in the week and serving in a bulk relief role. Considering Scholten boasts a 2.79 ERA with four strikeouts and four walks over 9.2 innings since his call-up, he remains no more than a dart-throw streaming option, especially considering his stay in the big leagues will likely be brief.
May 26, 2023
Starting against Tigers on Saturday
Scholtens will start against the Tigers on Saturday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens last worked as a bulk reliever against the Guardians on Monday, and he allowed a run over five innings of work in that outing. He'll replace Mike Clevinger (wrist) in the rotation spot, and a strong effort against the Detroit lineup come Saturday should bode well on him making multiple starts while Clevinger recovers.
May 23, 2023
Operates as bulk reliever
Scholtens (0-2) took the loss Monday against the Guardians, allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out one over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens replaced Mike Clevinger (wrist) on the major-league roster Monday and operated as the bulk reliever behind Jimmy Lambert, who started but pitched just one inning. It was Scholtens first MLB appearance since April 11 and just his third career big-league outing. The right-hander has surrendered just two earned runs on six hits over his first eight innings while posting a 5:4 K:BB. Clevinger will miss at least 15 days, so Scholtens should get a few more opportunities to impress over the next two weeks.
May 22, 2023
Called up Monday
Scholtens was called up from Triple-A Charlotte on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens will join the White Sox ahead of their three-game series in Cleveland, replacing Mike Clevinger (wrist) on the major-league roster after Clevinger was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday. Scholtens will likely replace Clevinger in the starting rotation, setting him up to start Saturday versus the Tigers. The right-hander has tossed three innings with Chicago in 2023, surrendering one run on four hits and two walks while striking out four over two appearances out of the bullpen. With Charlotte, he's produced a 3.99 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 42 strikeouts over 38.1 innings in seven starts and he'll look to keep up that level of production in his second stint with the White Sox this year.
May 17, 2023
Could be next starter up
White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said Wednesday that Scholtens would be the "next man up" if there is a need for a starter in the major-league rotation, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports.
ANALYSIS
That role at one point belonged to Davis Martin, but he's done for the rest of the 2023 campaign -- and most of 2024 -- after undergoing Tommy John surgery Wednesday. Scholtens made his MLB debut last month and allowed two runs -- one earned -- on four hits and two walks over three innings of relief. The 29-year-old right-hander has posted a 3.99 ERA and 42:11 K:BB in 38.1 innings this season at Triple-A Charlotte, where he's currently stationed.
Apr 13, 2023
Optioned to Triple-A
Scholtens was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Scholtens was added to the big-league roster Friday, and he allowed only one earned run across three innings and two appearances. He's likely to get another chance in the majors in 2023.
