Cedes three runs in loss
Luzardo allowed three runs on eight hits across four innings, taking the loss in Tuesday's 4-1 defeat against the Phillies in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo was knocked around by the Phillies lineup early and often, giving up a hit to every batter besides Harper at some point in his four innings of work. The pressure of the home crowd may have gotten to him since he allowed two wild pitches in the contest, one of which set up an RBI single by Christian Pache in the fifth inning. After Tuesday's outing, Luzardo is up to a 6.75 ERA and 1.64 WHIP with 16 strikeouts across 14.2 career postseason innings.

Tabbed as Game 1 starter
Luzardo will start Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Phillies on Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The Phillies' playoff rotation has yet to be announced. Luzardo had a 2.91 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 38 strikeouts in 34 innings over his final six starts of the season.

Fades late in no-decision
Luzardo came away with a no-decision Saturday, giving up three runs on three hits and three walks over five-plus innings in Miami's 5-4 victory over Milwaukee. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw blanked the Brewers for five innings before the wheels began to come off in the sixth, but he still exited the game with the Marlins ahead 4-1 before A.J. Puk served up a Carlos Santana homer that cashed in two baserunners Luzardo had left behind. It's just the second time in his last six outings he's been charged with more than two runs, a stretch in which Luzardo sports a 2.91 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 38:13 K:BB through 34 innings. The Marlins remain alive in the NL wild-card race, sitting one game back of the Cubs for the final spot heading into Sunday's action, so the club could need its best remaining starter to come up big in his final start of the regular season, likely to come on the road next week against the Mets.

Dominates in 10th win
Luzardo (10-9) allowed four hits and two walks over six shutout frames Sunday, striking out eight and earning a win against Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo worked around a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning but didn't face much of a threat otherwise. He's turned in three scoreless performances over his last five starts, posting a 2.48 ERA during that span and lowering his season ERA to 3.68. However, he's allowed at least four runs in four of his eight outings since the start of August. Luzardo's next start is currently projected to be at home against the Brewers.
Sep 11, 2023
Hit hard by Brewers
Luzardo (9-9) allowed six runs on 10 hits and four walks over five innings Monday, striking out five and talking a loss against Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo coughed up a solo homer to Mark Canha to begin the game but it was Milwaukee's four-run third inning that really buried the Marlins. Luzardo had allowed just two runs over his previous three starts but he's now given up at least six runs in three of his last six appearances. His season ERA jumped to 3.82 with a 186:49 K:BB through 160.1 frames. Luzardo is currently lined up to face Atlanta at home this weekend.

Sharp against LA
Luzardo did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over six innings against the Dodgers. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo's now logged three straight quality starts, allowing just two runs in that span (18 innings) after struggling to an 11.68 ERA in his previous three outings. Overall, his ERA is down to 3.59 on the season with a 1.20 WHIP and 181:45 K:BB across 28 starts (155.1 innings). The 25-year-old Luzardo will look to keep rolling in his next start, currently lined up for early next week in Milwaukee.

Dominates Rays in no-decision
Luzardo pitched six scoreless innings against Tampa Bay on Thursday, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out eight batters in a no-decision.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo held the Rays hitless through 5.1 frames until Yandy Diaz snapped the spell with a sixth-inning double. Luzardo got out of that frame unscathed on the scoreboard but didn't return for the seventh, having thrown 96 pitches. The left-hander racked up 16 whiffs en route to eight punchouts but had to settle for a no-decision since the Marlins' offense was unable to push any runs across the plate. Luzardo went through a rough stretch to end July and begin August, posting a 9.00 ERA and 2.24 WHIP over four starts (three losses) covering 17 innings. He's bounced back nicely, however, ending the current month with two straight scoreless outings during which he's allowed just three hits and posted a 15:3 K:BB over 12 frames.
Aug 23, 2023
Strong in ninth win
Luzardo (9-8) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out seven over six shutout innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo was locked in, a significant departure from his last four starts in which he allowed a combined 21 runs (20 earned) over just 17 innings. This was his fifth scoreless outing of the campaign and his first since July 4. He's now at a 3.96 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 167:42 K:BB through 143.1 innings over 26 starts on the year. Luzardo is lined up for a home start versus the Nationals this weekend if the Marlins opt to get by with a four-man rotation in the near term, which is possible with off days Thursday and Monday.
Aug 16, 2023
Stumbles again vs. Houston
Luzardo (8-8) took the loss Wednesday, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and three walks over 3.2 innings against Houston. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The Astros jumped on Luzardo early Wednesday, tallying five runs on three homers in the first inning. The 25-year-old left-hander appears to have hit a wall of late -- he's struggled to a 10.59 ERA over his last four starts (17 innings). Overall, Luzardo's ERA is up to 4.13 with a 1.29 WHIP and 160:41 K:BB across 25 starts (137.1 innings) this season. He'll look to get back on track in his next start, currently scheduled for next week in San Diego.
Aug 11, 2023
Roughed up by Yankees
Luzardo (8-7) took the loss versus the Yankees on Friday, yielding seven runs on nine hits and a walk over 3.1 frames. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
It's the shortest outing of Luzardo's season and also the most hits he's permitted this year. He served up a pair of home runs and now has surrendered five long balls across his last two outings. Luzardo fanned 13 in a gem against the Rockies last month but has now turned in three clunkers since then. It's possible he's tiring, having already reached his career high in innings with 131.2.
Aug 5, 2023
Fans eight in loss
Luzardo (8-6) took the loss Friday as the Marlins were downed 6-2 by the Rangers, giving up four runs on six hits -- including three home runs -- and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
The three homers allowed were a season high for Luzardo, who hadn't served up multiple long balls in a start since May 21, but he still generated 18 swinging strikes among his 90 pitches before exiting. The southpaw has stumbled a bit in his last two outings, but his ability to miss bats gives him a solid fantasy floor even when he isn't at his sharpest -- he's fanned at least eight batters in six of his last eight starts, posting a 2.51 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 61:15 K:BB through 46.2 innings over that stretch. He'll look to get back in the win column in his next trip to the mound, which is likely to come next week in Cincinnati.
Jul 31, 2023
Struggles against Detroit
Luzardo did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing four runs on seven hits and three walks over 4.2 innings against the Tigers. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
After fanning a career-high 13 batters in his last start, Luzardo was only able to punch out three hitters Sunday during 4.2 inefficient innings. All of the damage against Luzardo came in the third, where he allowed four hits and a walk as part of a four-run frame. The start ended an impressive run for the 25-year-old, who had allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven consecutive starts leading up to Sunday's dud. Luzardo is tentatively scheduled to take the mound next during a three-game road series against the Rangers this weekend.
Jul 24, 2023
Dominant in no-decision
Luzardo did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over seven innings against Colorado. He struck out 13.
ANALYSIS
Though Luzardo didn't get enough run support to pick up a victory, he was incredible in the no-decision and set a career-high in K's with 13. The outing also marked his sixth quality start in his last seven appearances, a stretch in which he owns a 1.48 ERA and a 55:11 K:BB through 42.2 innings. Luzardo will have another chance to build on his already impressive 2023 resume in his next start, which is projected to come against the Tigers, who average the third-fewest runs scored per game in MLB.
Jul 18, 2023
Returns to Earth against Cardinals
Luzardo allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out two batters over four-plus innings in a no-decision against St. Louis on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo had been on an impressive roll coming into the contest, notching five straight quality starts during which he posted a 1.14 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 40:6 K:BB over 31.2 innings. That magic came to least a temporary end Monday, as the left-hander tied a season-low by completing just four frames while posting more walks (three) than strikeouts (two). Luzardo had issued two or fewer free passes in 12 straight outings heading into the matchup, but his lack of control was a major factor in his undoing, as he threw just 52 of 92 pitches for a strike. Given his recent dominance, there's still plenty to be excited about for fantasy managers who roster Luzardo, and he'll look to bounce back in his second start of the week, which is tentatively lined up to come at home versus Colorado this weekend.
Jul 9, 2023
Fans nine in eighth win
Luzardo (8-5) earned the win against the Phillies on Sunday after he allowed two runs on four hits and one walk over 6.1 innings. He struck out nine.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander blanked Philly until the fifth inning, when Edmundo Sosa launched a two-run home run. Luzardo otherwise pitched well and combined for 29 called and swinging strikes as he struck out at least eight batters for the fourth straight start. The 25-year-old posted a 3.32 ERA in 18 starts last year and nearly replicated those figures during the first half of this season with a 3.29 ERA through 19 outings.
Jul 4, 2023
Blanks Cardinals in win
Luzardo (7-5) earned the win Tuesday, allowing five hits and two walks over six scoreless innings in a 15-2 win over the Cardinals. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo hasn't allowed a run in his last three starts (19.1 innings) while punching out 26 in that span. He's up to 120 strikeouts on the campaign, tied for seventh most in the MLB. The 25-year-old southpaw lowered his ERA to 3.32 with a 1.16 WHIP through 18 starts (103 innings) this season. Luzardo will look to keep his scoreless streak going in his next outing, tentatively lined up for Sunday against the Phillies.
Jun 30, 2023
Fans nine over 6.1 scoreless frames
Luzardo did not factor in the decision against Boston on Thursday, pitching 6.1 scoreless innings during which he allowed three hits and one walk while striking out nine batters.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo was dominant against a talented Red Sox offense, giving up just three singles and a walk. He racked up an impressive 19 swinging strikes en route to nine punchouts, and he finished with his third straight quality start. However, Miami was unable to put any runs on the board until the eighth inning, preventing Luzardo from notching a win. The southpaw has had to settle for a no-decision in each of his past two starts despite recording a combined 13.1 scoreless innings during which he's posted an outstanding 18:2 K:BB. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which is tentatively scheduled to come at home against St. Louis next week.
Jun 24, 2023
Let down by bullpen
Luzardo did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings against the Pirates. He struck out nine.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo was stellar Friday, dominating to the tune of 19 swinging strikes on 96 pitches. Unfortunately for Luzardo and his fantasy managers, closer A.J. Puk couldn't hold onto the lead in the ninth and squandered his win. Luzardo is still searching for a next level in terms of consistency, but when he's on, he's among the game's most impressive young lefty starters. He will take a 3.77 ERA, 1.19 ERA and 103:23 K:BB into his next outing.
Jun 18, 2023
Sharp in winning effort
Luzardo (6-5) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk over six innings in a 4-2 victory over the Nationals. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
It was a strong bounce-back performance from Luzardo after he was tagged for five runs in his last outing, a loss to the Mariners. Lane Thomas was responsible for the only two runs against Luzardo with a two-run homer in the third inning. The 25-year-old Luzardo has had an up-and-down month -- he's now 2-2 with a 5.24 ERA through four starts in June. Overall, the left-hander sports a 4.09 ERA with a 1.25 WHIP and 94:22 K:BB through 15 starts (83.2 innings) this season.
Jun 13, 2023
Suffers fifth loss
Luzardo (5-5) took the loss Monday, allowing six runs on six hits and one walk over four innings against Seattle. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo's consistency struggles continue to plague him. Over his last seven starts, the left-hander has allowed one run four times and five or more runs three times. During that stretch, he's posted an elite 46:7 K:BB over 38.1 innings, but he's also surrendered five home runs. Overall, Luzardo sports a less-than-ideal 4.17 ERA, but his 1.27 WHIP and 89:21 K:BB across 77.2 innings suggest he may have been the recipient of some bad luck recently. Either way, Luzardo will look to get back on track during his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for the finale of a three-game weekend set in Washington.
Jun 6, 2023
Dominant in fifth win
Luzardo (5-4) earned the win Tuesday, allowing a run on two hits over seven innings against the Royals. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo has logged at least seven strikeouts in each of his last five starts. The 25-year-old southpaw allowed just one hit through his first five innings before Nick Pratto led off the sixth with a double and eventually scored the Royals' lone run. Luzardo lowered his ERA to 3.79 with a 1.25 WHIP and 86:20 K:BB through 13 starts (73.2 innings) this season. He's currently lined up to face the Mariners o the road in his next outing.
Jun 1, 2023
Falls to Padres
Luzardo (4-4) took the loss Thursday, allowing five runs on four hits and a walk over 5.1 innings against the Padres. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo falls to 1-2 over his last four outings, though he's logged at least seven strikeouts in each start. He was sharp in his first three innings Thursday, retiring the first nine batters faced while punching out five. However, the Padres pushed across two runs on a pair of doubles in the fourth, and Luzardo unraveled from there. The 25-year-old lefty's ERA is up to 4.05 with a 1.35 WHIP and 78:20 K:BB. Luzardo is currently lined up for a friendlier matchup at home against the Royals in his next outing.
May 27, 2023
Registers fourth win
Luzardo (4-3) earned the win Friday, allowing one run on seven hits and one walk over five innings against the Angels. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo had a nice rebound game after coughing up six runs in five innings on May 21 against the Giants. The former Athletic is currently on pace to pitch the most innings of his career by far this year, and it remains to be seen how he'll perform over the course of a full season starting. The southpaw is tentatively slated to face the Padres at home in his next appearance.
May 21, 2023
Surrenders six runs in loss
Luzardo (3-3) allowed six runs on six hits and a walk while striking out eight over five-plus innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo was fine through five frames, but he gave up a double and an RBI single to begin the sixth, and Andrew Nardi allowed the inherited runner to score. The six runs allowed were a season high for Luzardo, and he allowed multiple home runs for the second time in 10 starts. He has a 3.83 ERA, 1.137 WHIP and 63:18 K:BB through 56.1 innings overall. He'll look to get back on track versus the Angels in his next start.
May 16, 2023
Pitches well in no-decision
Luzardo did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing a run on five hits and a walk over six innings against Washington. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Lane Thomas' solo homer in the sixth inning was the lone blemish on Luzardo's line Tuesday after he held the Nationals to three hits through the first five frames. The 25-year-old left-hander has surrendered just two runs in his last two starts (12 innings) as he lowered his ERA to 3.16 with a 1.36 WHIP and 55:17 K:BB through 51.1 innings this season. Luzardo is tentatively lined up to face the Giants in his next outing.
May 10, 2023
Bounces back for third win
Luzardo (3-2) allowed a run on seven hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo hadn't collected a win in his last four starts, but he was able to limit the damage effectively Tuesday. This was his fourth quality start of the season, and the first time since April 5 that he kept an opponent to one run or fewer. The southpaw now has a 3.38 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 48:16 K:BB through 45.1 innings over eight starts this year. He's surrendered at least five hits in all but one of his outings, but he's yet to really get hit hard. Luzardo is projected for a favorable home start versus the Nationals next week.
May 4, 2023
Suffers second loss
Luzardo (2-2) allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings, taking the loss versus Atlanta on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo turned in another okay effort, though the five strikeouts matched his season low. The southpaw threw 106 pitches (68 strikes), but Atlanta's offense proved just a little better. His 3.66 ERA is fine, but a 1.40 WHIP and 43:14 K:BB through 39.1 innings don't suggest he can get much better unless he can start limiting baserunners better. Luzardo projects for a road start in Arizona next week.
Apr 29, 2023
Fans six in no-decision
Luzardo allowed two runs on five hits and two walks over 6.1 innings in Friday's win over the Cubs. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Through six innings, the only damage against Luzardo was a solo homer by Nelson Velazquez in the third. Luzardo was then charged with one more run in the seventh. He'd allowed 10 runs over his previous three starts but he lowered his season ERA to 3.48 after Friday's outing. Luzardo has also forced double-digit whiffs in every start this year, including 13 against the Cubs. He's currently lined up for a rematch with the Cubs in Chicago next week.
Apr 23, 2023
Struggles in first loss
Luzardo (2-1) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk over 4.1 innings against the Guardians. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo held Cleveland off the board in the first two innings and set down the first two batters in the third. However, he surrendered a two-out triple to Amed Rosario, followed by back-to-back home runs from Jose Ramirez and Josh Bell. It's the second-straight outing where Luzardo couldn't make it out of the fifth inning after going at least six in his previous two starts. He has a 3.62 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 32:9 K:BB through 27.1 innings to start the year.
Apr 18, 2023
Fans six in no-decision
Luzardo did not factor into the decision Monday against the Giants, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo failed to last at least five innings for the first time this season. Despite this setback, the 25-year-old continues to impress by generating a significant number of swings and misses adding six more strikeouts in this outing. With a 2-0 record, 2.74 ERA and 26:8 K:BB over 23 innings, Luzardo's performance thus far has been an impressive start to the campaign. He will look to bounce back in his next start, tentatively scheduled for the upcoming series with Cleveland.
Apr 12, 2023
Tosses quality start Tuesday
Luzardo (2-0) picked up the win in Tuesday's 8-4 victory over the Phillies, giving up three runs on eight hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw blanked Philly for five frames before stumbling in the sixth. Luzardo generated 16 swinging strikes among his 98 pitches as he continues an impressive start to the season that's seen him post a 1.93 ERA and 20:6 K:BB through his first three starts and 18.2 innings. The 25-year-old will look to keep rolling next week at home against the Giants.
Apr 5, 2023
Fans 10 in no-decision
Luzardo didn't factor in the decision in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Twins, giving up one run on five hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out 10.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw was dominant in his second start of the year, generating a stunning 20 swinging strikes among his 99 pitches and keeping Minnesota off the board until tiring a bit in his final frame. Luzardo looks healthy and ready to break out in 2023, posting a 0.71 ERA and 15:5 K:BB through his first 12.2 innings, and he next lines up to face the Phillies on the road early next week.
Mar 31, 2023
Notches first win of 2023
Luzardo (1-0) picked up the win Friday, giving up two hits and four walks over 5.2 scoreless innings in a 2-1 victory over the Mets. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw was effectively wild, throwing only 51 of 91 pitches for strikes but generating 15 swinging strikes and not allowing much hard contact. Luzardo posted strong numbers over 18 starts in 2022, and if he can stay healthier this season he could blossom into an ace for the Marlins. His next start is likely to come Wednesday, at home against the Twins.
Mar 16, 2023
Sharp in win for Venezuela
Luzardo gave up four hits and a walk over four scoreless innings while striking out five Wednesday in Venezuela's 5-1 win over Israel in the WBC.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw overmatched an Israel lineup that featured just three players with any big-league experience, tossing 35 of 50 pitches for strikes before exiting. Luzardo was looking good in Grapefruit League play before the tournament started as well, posting a 10:1 K:BB through 8.2 innings, and after putting together a 3.32 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 30.0 percent strikeout rate through 100.1 innings for the Marlins in 2022, his ability to stay healthy might be the only thing standing between the 25-year-old and a breakout campaign.
Mar 5, 2023
Strikes out three Saturday
Luzardo gave up three runs on four hits over 2.2 innings while striking out three in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
A three-run homer by minor-league veteran Lorenzo Cedrola in the second inning marred his outing, but Luzardo was otherwise sharp and his strikeout victims included Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso. The 25-year-old southpaw has a 4:0 K:BB through his first 4.2 innings this spring, and if Luzardo can stay healthy in 2023 he could be poised for a breakout campaign.
Feb 3, 2023
Wins arbitration case
Luzardo won his arbitration case with the Marlins on Friday, setting his salary for 2023 at $2.45 million, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo finished the 2022 campaign red-hot and concluded the season with a 3.32 ERA and 1.04 WHIP with 120 punchouts over 100.1 innings in 18 starts with the Marlins. As a result of the strong year, Luzardo was more inclined to win his arbitration case this offseason. The left-hander could be set for a breakout year in 2023 as he operates as Miami's number two option behind Sandy Alcantara in the team's rotation.
Oct 4, 2022
Ends season in dazzling fashion
Luzardo (4-7) picked up the win in Monday's 4-0 victory over Atlanta, scattering four hits and a walk over six scoreless innings while striking out 12.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw kept Atlanta from clinching another NL East title with one of his best performances of the year. Luzardo tied his career high in strikeouts -- generating a massive 20 swinging strikes among his 101 pitches -- while delivering his fourth straight quality start and his 11th in 18 outings. The 25-year-old ends a breakout campaign with a 3.32 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 120:35 K:BB through 100.1 innings, and the next step for Luzardo if he wants to become a true ace in 2023 is finding a way to stay off the IL.
Sep 29, 2022
Another quality start
Luzardo did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings against the Mets. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo was pitching a shutout until he allowed a two-run homer from third baseman Eduardo Escobar with nobody out in the seventh inning to draw the Mets within two. The lefty has pitched six innings or more in seven of his last eight starts while allowing two runs or fewer six times. The 24-year-old is significantly better away from Miami, recording a 2.64 ERA and 0.90 WHIP over 58 innings compared to a 4.95 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 36.1 innings at home.
Sep 21, 2022
Dominates Cubs in no decision
Luzardo tossed 6.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits and a walk while striking out 11 in Wednesday's loss to the Cubs. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo was in full command for the first six innings, holding the Cubs scoreless while striking out 10. After getting two outs in the top of the seventh including a strikeout, Patrick Wisdom took the left-hander deep for a solo shot, ending his day at 6.2 innings. The bullpen later blew the 3-1 lead Luzardo left with, but the outing was his sixth quality start in his last seven outings. The 24-year-old has produced a 3.40 ERA and 1.04 WHIP with 44 strikeouts over 42.1 innings during that stretch.
Sep 17, 2022
Deals quality start Friday
Luzardo didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Nationals, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk over six-plus innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw tossed only 58 of 97 pitches for strikes but mostly stayed out of danger as he carried a shutout into the seventh inning. The wheels fell off at that point though, as Joey Meneses led off the frame with an inside-the-park home run that kick-started a Nats rally and helped chase Luzardo from the game. The quality start was his sixth in his last eight outings, a stretch in which Luzardo has a 3.59 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 45:15 K:BB through 47.2 innings.
Sep 11, 2022
Pulled after 3.1 innings Sunday
Luzardo (3-7) took the loss Sunday against the Mets, allowing five runs on six hits, three walks and two hit batsmen while striking out three in 3.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo struggled from start to finish and allowed at least two baserunners in each of the four innings he appeared. Eleven of the 21 batters he faced reached safely and the leadoff man reached in three of the four frames. He entered play Sunday having not hit a single batter in any of his 13 outings but hit two of the first 12 hitters to come to the plate. His next start will likely be next weekend in Washington.
Sep 7, 2022
Fans nine in no-decision
Luzardo didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Phillies, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out nine.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw was impressive, generating 19 swinging strikes among his 92 pitches, but he left the game on the hook for his seventh loss until the Marlins tied it up in the eighth inning. Luzardo has reeled off four straight quality starts and five in his last six outings, compiling a 2.82 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 36:11 K:BB through 38.1 innings over the latter stretch.
Aug 31, 2022
Ekes out quality start
Luzardo (3-6) took the loss Tuesday as the Marlins fell 7-2 to the Rays, giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw's own defensive miscue in the fifth inning allowed him to escape with his third straight quality start, but this might have been Luzardo's shakiest performance since he returned to the rotation at the beginning of August. Despite Tuesday's stumble, he still wraps up the month with a 2.97 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 32:9 K:BB through 36.1 innings.

Settles for no-decision against A's
Luzardo didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to the A's, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
While he wasn't at his most dominant, Luzardo did take a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Jonah Bride broke it up with a leadoff single. The southpaw tossed 66 of 102 pitches for strikes as he delivered his second straight quality start and fifth in 11 trips to the mound this season. Luzardo will take a 3.34 ERA and 69:23 K:BB through 59.1 innings into his next outing.

Strikes out seven in no-decision
Luzardo allowed a run on four hits and two walks while striking out seven over 6.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Two of Luzardo's four starts in August have been quality, with Friday's effort arguably one of his best all year given the opponent. He was charged with one run in the seventh inning, surrendered by Steven Okert after Luzardo left the contest with one on and one out. The 24-year-old southpaw has pitched to a 3.44 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 65:21 K:BB through 52.1 innings across 10 starts this year.
Aug 14, 2022
Takes fifth loss
Luzardo (3-5) allowed four earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six across five innings to take the loss in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo worked three scoreless innings but allowed five batters to reach base in the fourth frame -- resulting in three earned runs. He also served up a solo home run to Matt Olson, the only long ball he's surrendered across 17 innings since returning from the injured list on Aug 1. Despite the relatively poor outing Saturday, Luzardo has maintained a 3.18 ERA and 17:3 K:BB in that span.
Aug 7, 2022
Masterful in win
Luzardo (3-4) earned the victory Sunday against the Cubs, striking out six in seven shutout innings while allowing a hit and a walk.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo was magnificent and efficient Sunday and got through the seven scoreless frames with 91 pitches thrown. At one point he retired 12 straight batters. It was the first time in his big-league career that he pitched seven innings in a start without allowing a run. In his two starts since returning from a forearm injury, he's allowed a total of two runs on four hits while fanning 11 in 12 innings. His next start will likely be next weekend against Atlanta.

Pitches well but loses in return
Luzardo (2-4) took the loss against Cincinnati on Monday, allowing two runs on three hits and no walks while striking out five batters over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo made his first major-league appearance since May 10 and was able to stick around for 81 pitches, 49 of which were strikes. He gave up a pair of runs in the second inning but held the Reds scoreless in each of his other four frames; however, he received little support from his offense and was tagged with the loss. It was nonetheless a positive return for Luzardo, who had previously been on the 60-day IL with a forearm strain. He should be a fixture in the Marlins rotation for the rest of the season barring any further injury issues.

Starting for Miami on Monday
The Marlins will activate Luzardo (forearm) from the 60-day injured list to have him start Monday's game against the Reds, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo missed just shy of three months with his forearm injury, but he completed a rehab assignment and is ready to rejoin Miami's rotation. He threw 75 pitches in his final rehab start, so his pitch count will likely be limited to some degree in his first outing back with the big club.
Jul 28, 2022
Reaches fifth inning in rehab start
Luzardo (forearm) struck out six and allowed two earned runs on three hits and four walks Wednesday in his rehab start with Triple-A Jacksonville.
ANALYSIS
While making the third start of his rehab assignment and his second in a row at Jacksonville, Luzardo tossed 75 pitches (45 strikes) and faced 22 batters. That sort of workload suggests that Luzardo is stretched out enough to make his next start in the big leagues, assuming the Marlins are comfortable with how the southpaw checked out physically following Wednesday's outing. Luzardo turned in a 4.03 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 41:16 K:BB over 29 innings in his first six starts of the season with the Marlins before he landed on the injured list in mid-May with a left forearm strain.
Jul 22, 2022
Strong rehab outing
Luzardo (forearm) threw four no-hit innings while striking out three with Triple-A Jacksonville during a rehab outing Friday.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo has been sidelined since early May but has now made multiple rehab appearances while building up to 51 pitches. He could make his next start in the big leagues on a limited pitch count, or the Marlins could opt to give him one more rehab outing to further ramp up.
Jul 21, 2022
Preparing for second rehab start
Luzardo (forearm) will make his second rehab start with Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo, who has resided on the injured list since May 15 with a left forearm strain, made his first rehab appearance July 16 with Single-A Jupiter, covering three innings and striking out three while allowing one earned run on two hits and no walks. In addition to getting a stiffer test for his second rehab start, Luzardo is also expected to build up to four innings Friday. Luzardo will probably need at least one additional rehab start beyond Friday before slotting back into the Miami rotation in early August. Prior to getting hurt, Luzardo was off to a solid start to the season with a 4.03 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 41 strikeouts over 29 innings.
Jul 15, 2022
Rehab starting Saturday
Luzardo (forearm) will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Jupiter on Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo has been out for two months with a strained left forearm. The length of his absence means he'll probably require a fairly long rehab assignment, so it's possible he doesn't return until early August.
Jul 11, 2022
Ready to face hitters
Luzardo (forearm) is scheduled to throw a two-inning live batting practice session Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
If the session goes well, Luzardo will likely face hitters again later in the week before the Marlins may out a minor-league rehab assignment for the 24-year-old lefty. Luzardo has been on the injured list since May 15 with a left forearm strain.
Jul 7, 2022
Bullpen on tap
Luzardo (forearm) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo began his throwing program in mid-June and has now progressed to throwing off a mound. The left-hander has been sidelined nearly two months with a forearm strain, so he'll likely require multiple rehab starts in the minors before being cleared to join the big-league rotation.
Jun 24, 2022
Increases throwing distance
Luzardo (forearm) has increased his throwing distance to 105 feet, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo began a throwing program last weekend and has progressed to playing long toss. The southpaw still has several steps to clear before he's in the mix to return to game action, but he seems to be trending toward resuming mound work in the near future.
Jun 17, 2022
Begins throwing program
Luzardo (forearm) will start a throwing program this weekend, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He is on the 60-day injured list with a left forearm strain and is not expected to return anytime soon. Given the severity of the injury, there could be some starts and stops in Luzardo's throwing program and he will probably be brought along very conservatively.
Jun 15, 2022
Heads to 60-day IL
The Marlins transferred Luzardo (forearm) on Tuesday from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo has resided on the IL since May 15 due to a left forearm strain and only recently resumed throwing a few days ago, so it's not a major surprise that the Marlins elected to move him to the 60-day IL. Even if he hits no further snags in his recovery from the injury, he'll still likely need at least three weeks to get stretched back out for starting duty with the big club, so Luzardo seems likely to remain sidelined through the All-Star break. The transaction temporarily removes Luzardo from the 40-man roster and opens up a spot for reliever Jimmy Yacabonis, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move.
Jun 13, 2022
Cleared to play catch
Marlins manager Don Mattingly disclosed Monday that Luzardo (forearm) has been cleared to play catch, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The long-toss sessions off flat ground mark Luzardo's first throwing activity since he was placed on the 15-day injured list May 15 with a left forearm strain. While it's a positive step forward for Luzardo, he'll likely need at least two or three weeks to get himself ready for a return to the big-league rotation, so fantasy managers that have been stashing him probably shouldn't expect him back until July.
Jun 7, 2022
Yet to start throwing
Luzardo (forearm) has yet to begin a throwing program since landing on the 15-day injured list May 12, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Now more than three weeks removed from being shut down with a left forearm strain, Luzardo has yet to take any meaningful steps forward in his recovery. Even if he's cleared to start playing catch within the next few days, Luzardo will still require multiple weeks to build back up for a starting role. At this stage, Luzardo might be trending toward a return from the IL in July at the earliest.
May 29, 2022
Still not throwing
Manager Don Mattingly said Sunday that Luzardo (forearm) has yet to resume a throwing program and will take longer than the Marlins initially expected to return from the 15-day injured list, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
When Miami placed Luzardo on the IL on May 12 with a left forearm strain, the team held out hope that the southpaw might be ready for activation shortly after the 15 days lapsed, but that didn't come to fruition. Since he's yet to resume activity and will need to be built back up for a starting role, Luzardo is realistically multiple weeks away from coming off the IL, and it wouldn't be surprising if his absence extended through the All-Star break. Miami plans to call up Edward Cabrera from Triple-A Jacksonville this week to step in as their new fifth starter after Cody Poteet (elbow) joined Luzardo on the IL on Sunday.
May 24, 2022
Not yet throwing
Luzardo (forearm) has yet to start a throwing program since being placed on the 15-day injured list in mid-May, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old is eligible to be activated later this week but obviously won't be ready to return at that point. Luzardo is dealing with a strained left forearm, and his return timeline isn't likely to receive much clarity until he's at least able to resume throwing.
May 15, 2022
Out with forearm strain
Luzardo was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a left forearm strain, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The move is retroactive to May 12.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old presumably suffered the injury during his last start, when he allowed four runs on two hits with six strikeouts and four walks across 2.2 innings Tuesday in Arizona. Luzardo will be eligible to be activated May 27, but it's unclear how long he's expected to be sidelined by the forearm strain. According to Daniel Alvarez-Montes of El Extrabase, Cody Poteet will take Luzardo's spot in the rotation and start Monday versus the Nationals.
May 11, 2022
Struggles with Control
Luzardo (2-3) took the loss during Tuesday's 9-3 defeat at the hands of the Diamondbacks, allowing four runs on two hits and four walks with six strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo got off to a rocky start by surrendering a walk and a home run before recording an out in the first inning, then put two more on via the walk in the third with both runners coming around to score. The 24-year-old has compiled nearly as many walks (16) as hits (18) this year, though he's whiffed an impressive 41 strikeouts in 29 innings and recorded six of eight outs via strikeout Tuesday. He's projected to toe the rubber again early next week against the Nationals.
May 6, 2022
Suffers loss despite quality start
Luzardo (2-2) took the loss against San Diego on Thursday, pitching six innings and allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out seven.
ANALYSIS
If not for Manny Machado, the outcome could have been dramatically different for the left-handed hurler. Machado swatted a pair of solo homers for San Diego's only two runs of the game, and the Marlins offense was unable to muster much of a protest against a trio of Padres pitchers. Despite the disappointing outcome, this was another positive outing for Luzardo, as he racked up 13 swinging strikes and finished with his second consecutive quality start. He'll carry a 3.08 ERA into his next appearance, which is tentatively slated to come in Arizona on Tuesday.
Apr 24, 2022
Whiffs eight in victory
Luzardo (1-1) allowed a run on two hits and four walks while striking out eight in five innings to earn the win over Atlanta on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo was charged with his first loss of the year during his last outing, but he entered the win column during Sunday's narrow victory. The 24-year-old has now posted a 3.77 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 14.1 innings while striking out 37.5 percent of the batters he's faced in his first three starts of the year. The southpaw tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Mariners on Saturday.
Apr 19, 2022
Handed first defeat
Luzardo (0-1) was charged with the loss Tuesday versus the Cardinals after allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits across 4.1 innings. He had three strikeouts and two walks.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old fanned 12 and gave up only one run over five innings during his season debut, but the Cardinals had no issues reaching base against him Tuesday, including four extra-base hits. Luzardo now has a 4.82 ERA through two outings this year and is next projected to pitch Sunday in Atlanta.
Apr 13, 2022
Fans career-high 12 in no-decision
Luzardo didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Angels, allowing one run on two hits and a walk over five innings while striking out a career-high 12.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw picked up right where he left off after an impressive spring training, popping 99.2 mph with his second pitch of the game and effectively mixing in his curve, sinker and changeup. Luzardo has struggled to turn his potential into production over the last couple seasons, but the early returns in 2022 suggest the 24-year-old is ready to break out. Luzardo is next scheduled to take the mound Tuesday, at home against the Cardinals.
Apr 2, 2022
Wraps up impressive spring
Luzardo gave up one run on four hits and two walks over 4.2 innings in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Jose Altuve took him deep to lead off the bottom of the first inning, but after that Luzardo shut down a Houston lineup that most featured Opening Day starters. It was the first run the young southpaw had allowed this spring, and he heads into the regular season having posted a 0.77 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 10:3 K:BB through 11.2 innings in Grapefruit League play. Luzardo is now on the third organization since being drafted in 2016, but he might finally be ready to deliver on the promise he's showed in the minors.
Mar 24, 2022
Raises hopes in spring debut
Luzardo tossed three perfect innings and struck out two in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old southpaw touched 99 mph with his fastball while carving up a St. Louis lineup that included Paul Goldschmidt, Nolan Arenado and Dylan Carlson. Luzardo's raw stuff has never been in question, but his ability to command it remains a concern after he posted a 6.61 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 11.0 percent walk rate over 95.1 innings between the A's and Marlins last season. If he can begin to put things together in 2022 though, Miami's already impressive young rotation will be that much stronger.
Oct 2, 2021
Whiffs 11 in win over Phillies
Luzardo (6-9) yielded one run on six hits with 11 strikeouts over 5.1 innings to earn the win Saturday against Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old enjoyed the first double-digit strikeout performance of his career, limiting the Phillies to a Matt Vierling RBI single in the fifth inning. Luzardo had a rocky rookie campaign, putting up a 6.61 ERA and 58:32 K:BB in 57.1 innings, but his season-ending effort showcased the high-end ability that has made him one of the game's top pitching prospects.
Sep 26, 2021
Handed ninth loss
Luzardo (5-9) allowed two runs on two hits and two walks over four innings Sunday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo struggled out of the gate, allowing two runs in the first inning on a pair of sacrifice flies. He then retired eight straight batters and worked out of a jam in the fourth inning without taking any more damage. Luzardo has pitched fewer than six innings in each of his last five starts but slightly lowered his season ERA to 6.90. He's lined up to face the Phillies at home next weekend.
Sep 20, 2021
Ineffective through four
Luzardo pitched four innings surrendering five runs on six hits and four walks while striking out two in Monday's victory over the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old allowed four runs through four innings and was pulled after two reached base against him to open the fifth inning, one of whom would score. It was his second straight sub-par start, both of which were against the Nationals. In those two games, he has allowed nine runs, 13 hits and six walks over 8.1 innings. Luzardo will look to right the ship in his next expected start versus the Rays on Sunday.
Sep 15, 2021
Takes step back
Luzardo (5-8) allowed four earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out one and walking two across 4.1 innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo was betrayed by his defense to account for one of his earned runs, but he also had moments of being hit hard by the Nationals. He surrendered a solo shot to Ryan Zimmerman in the second inning and was tagged for two earned runs in the fifth frame after allowing three consecutive hits. While not a truly disastrous outing, Luzardo entered the game having allowed only five earned runs across his last 17.1 innings while racking up 19 strikeouts as compared to seven walks. For the season, Luzardo has a 6.80 ERA with an 80:42 K:BB across 82 frames.
Sep 10, 2021
Ties season high with eight Ks
Luzardo allowed two runs on two hits and four walks over 5.2 innings in a no-decision Thursday against the Mets. He also had eight strikeouts, matching his season high.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo brought in a run with a wild pitch in the first inning and gave up a solo homer to Javier Baez in the third but otherwise limited the damage while working into the sixth inning for the third straight start. After a rough start to his Miami career, Luzardo has settled in lately with a 2.60 ERA and 19:7 K:BB in 17.1 innings over his past three outings. He's tentatively lined up for a road matchup at Washington in his next scheduled start.
Sep 3, 2021
Yields three runs in no-decision
Luzardo allowed three runs on five hits and two walks over 5.2 innings in a win over the Phillies on Friday. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo coughed up a leadoff homer to Freddy Galvis followed by a pair of RBI extra-base knocks by Matt Vierling in the second and sixth frames. He left the game in a 3-3 tie and would've earned a win if he completed the sixth as the Marlins piled on seven runs the next half-inning. The 23-year-old southpaw lowered his ERA to 7.00 with a 71:36 K:BB through 72 innings. Luzardo is projected to see the Mets at home next week.
Aug 29, 2021
Tosses six shutout frames
Luzardo (5-7) allowed a hit and a walk over six scoreless innings Sunday, striking out eight and earning a win over the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo got off to a shaky start, yielding a double and a walk to the first two batters of the game. Over the next five innings, only one Red would reach base and it was due to a fielding error. It's just the second time this year that the 23-year-old southpaw finished at least six innings and he matched his season-high eight strikeouts. He's now 3-3 since joining the Marlins despite an unsightly 7.62 ERA during that span. Luzardo is lined up to face the Phillies at home next weekend.
Aug 24, 2021
Allows five in loss
Luzardo (4-7) allowed five runs on 10 hits and one walk with three strikeouts through 4.2 innings, taking the loss in Tuesday's 5-1 defeat to the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
While Luzardo did display improved control Tuesday night, this was another rough outing for the left-hander. He walked only one batter and 69 percent of his pitches found the zone (well above his season mark of 60 percent), but a pair of two-run homers from Tres Barrera and Ryan Zimmerman ushered the Peruvian out of the game early. Since joining Miami before the trade deadline, Luzardo has started five games and allowed 24 runs in 22.1 innings. A demotion to the bullpen or worse could be looming for the 23-year-old.
Aug 19, 2021
Shows poor control in loss
Luzardo dropped to 4-6 after giving up four runs on four hits and five walks while striking out four across three innings in Wednesday's 11-9 loss to Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo pumped in only 42 of his 74 pitches for strikes and had a particularly rough stretch in the top of the fourth inning, when he issued three consecutive walks. Poor control has been a recurring theme for Luzardo in his first four starts with Miami, as he's walked 16 batters in 17.2 innings over that stretch. Luzardo could be at risk of a demotion to the bullpen or to Triple-A Jacksonville once Trevor Rogers (personal) is reinstated from the restricted list.
Aug 14, 2021
Bailed out by offense Friday
Luzardo (4-5) picked up the win in Friday's 14-10 win over the Cubs, coughing up five runs on six hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw tossed only 60 of 106 pitches for strikes and was hit hard when he was in the zone, getting taken deep twice while also giving up a double and a triple among his six hits allowed, but an 11-run second inning by the Marlins made Luzardo's struggles somewhat moot. The 23-year-old has a 9.20 ERA through his first three starts for Miami and has walked 11 batters in 14.2 innings, and the control and command issues he displayed earlier in the year with Oakland don't appear to be solvable simply via a change of scenery.
Aug 8, 2021
Knocked around in Colorado
Luzardo (3-5) took the loss against the Rockies on Saturday, completing 4.2 innings and allowing seven runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out two.
ANALYSIS
Many pitchers have struggled in the confines of Coors Field, but Luzardo's struggles Saturday had as much to do with his lack of control as with the elevation. The southpaw didn't allow any homers but threw only 47 of 81 pitches for strikes and tied a season high with four walks, with his final free pass forcing in a run and leading to Luzardo's exit from the game. The once-heralded prospect has struggled through a rough 2021 campaign, posting a 7.36 ERA through 15 big-league appearances and a 6.52 ERA in eight outings at Triple-A. The Marlins are likely to give him ample leeway given the fact that they are out of the playoff picture and gave up Starling Marte to acquire him, but Luzardo simply isn't a viable option in fantasy leagues right now given his poor results this season.
Aug 7, 2021
Awarded second start
Luzardo is scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo wasn't overly impressive in his Miami debut Monday, but he was able to capture the win while limiting the Mets to three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five across five innings. The 23-year-old southpaw should get a long look in the Miami rotation over the final two months of the season as he looks to solidify a starting role for the big club heading into 2022.
Aug 3, 2021
Grabs win in Miami debut
Luzardo (3-4) picked up the win Monday, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks over five innings in a 6-3 victory over the Mets. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Making his Marlins debut after coming over from Oakland in the Starling Marte deal, Luzardo once again has somewhat shaky control and tossed 47 of 84 pitches for strikes. but a first-inning grand slam by Lewis Brinson gave him all the run support he would need. The southpaw has a 6.70 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 45:19 K:BB through 43 innings in the majors this season, but his scouting reports and performances prior to this year all suggest he's capable of much, much better.
Aug 2, 2021
Starting Monday versus Mets
Luzardo will be promoted from Triple-A Jacksonville to start Monday's game against the Mets, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was acquired from the A's in exchange for Starling Marte last week, and he'll debut for his new team Monday. Luzardo struggled in the majors to start the season with a 6.87 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 40:16 K:BB over 38 innings. He served up 11 homers and was unable to find success as a starter and reliever, and he also posted a 6.52 ERA in the minors. Luzardo will now have a chance for a fresh start in Miami, with his first opportunity coming Monday against first-place New York.
Jul 28, 2021
Role not determined
The Marlins have not decided if Luzardo will immediately join the rotation, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Marlis acquired Luzardo in exchange for Starling Marte on Wednesday. A change of scenery could benefit Luzardo, as he struggled to a 6.87 ERA and 1.63 WHIP across 38 innings while with Oakland this season. He pitched both out of the bullpen and as a starter with his old club, though given the lack of depth currently in the Marlins' rotation, Luzardo figures to get a chance for significant work at some point prior to the close of the campaign.
Jul 28, 2021
Shipped to Marlins
Luzardo was traded from the Athletics to the Marlins on Wednesday in exchange for outfielder Starling Marte, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo has had lackluster results in the big leagues across the last two seasons with a 5.20 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 97 innings across 25 appearances (15 starts), and he's recorded a 6.52 ERA in eight starts at Triple-A Las Vegas this year. However, the southpaw still has several years of team control with plenty of potential as a prospect, and he has a 95.6 mph fastball velocity.
Jul 15, 2021
Another abysmal Triple-A start
Luzardo allowed seven earned runs on seven hits, four walks and three hit batsman over 4.2 innings in Triple-A Las Vegas' loss to Reno on Wednesday. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
The red flags surrounding Luzardo abound at this point, as he surprisingly can't even seem to get hitters out consistently at the Triple-A level after pitching his way into a demotion from the Athletics in the latter part of June. Luzardo has now allowed seven earned runs apiece in two of his last three starts, and the fact he threw just 50 of 96 pitches for strikes Wednesday while plunking a trio of batters perfectly encapsulates how shaky matters are for him at the moment. The young southpaw had offered some reason for optimism when he gave up just one unearned run over 4.1 innings in the start prior to Wednesday's, but the regression versus Reno was a stark reminder of how long a path he may now have to get back to the major-league club.
Jul 5, 2021
Struggles continue in Vegas
Luzardo allowed seven earned runs on six hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch over two-thirds of an inning in a start for Triple-A Las Vegas against Sacramento on Friday.
ANALYSIS
The final line says it all, and it's probably fair to say the organization may be developing at least some mild concerns about Luzardo at this point. The southpaw simply hasn't been the same, at least not for more than an outing or two at a time, since returning from a fractured pinkie at the big-league level in late May. Luzardo proved to be a poor fit as a reliever upon being activated, leading to a demotion to the Aviators. While Luzardo's first two outings in Las Vegas went well (one unearned run over 4.2 innings), he's subsequently given up 10 earned runs on 12 hits across the four innings covering his last two starts.
Jun 30, 2021
Ups pitch count with Aviators
Luzardo worked up to 63 pitches in his second start for Triple-A Las Vegas in a win over Salt Lake on Sunday, allowing three earned runs on six hits and two walks over 3.1 innings while recording three strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
While the fact his arm continued getting stretched out is a positive, the reason Luzardo had to throw so many pitches in the first place was largely due to spotty control. The southpaw also surrendered a solo home run during his time on the mound after staying away from the long ball during his first appearance with Las Vegas on June 22, a potentially worrisome sign given Luzardo's 2.6 HR/9 across 38 innings at the big-league level this season.
Jun 24, 2021
Solid in return to minors
Luzardo started Triple-A Las Vegas' win over Tacoma on Tuesday and allowed one unearned run on two hits and two walks while recording four strikeouts over three innings. He also uncorked a wild pitch and didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Luzardo's first start back with the Aviators didn't see him at his sharpest by any means -- he threw only 26 of 50 pitches for strikes -- but the young left-hander at least kept the ball in the park, something he'd failed to accomplish in each of his last five appearances at the big-league level. Luzardo had trouble finding any sort of lasting success as either a starter or reliever with the Athletics over the first two-plus months of the season, and he'll presumably spend extended time in Las Vegas righting his ship before a return to the majors is considered.
