It has a been a miserable year for Wentz as he is now tied for fifth in the league with 13 losses. The 25-year-old lefty's September was particularly rough as he's thrown 16.1 innings to the tune of an 8.39 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and 15:9 K:BB. Wentz ends his 2023 season with a gruesome 6.90 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 98:47 K:BB over 105.2 innings.

Wentz is slated to start Friday's game against the Guardians at Comerica Park.

Since being called up from Triple-A Toledo on Aug. 30, Wentz has mostly been included in the rotation for the past month, though his most recent two appearances came as a bulk reliever. He'll move into a traditional starting role Friday, hoping to close the season on a high note as he stakes his claim to a more permanent spot in the rotation in 2024. Over 103.1 innings with the big club this season, Wentz has gone 3-12 with a 6.45 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 96:44 K:BB.

Wentz will carry a 6.65 ERA into a potential start Monday against the Dodgers on the road, and he should be avoided in the tough spot.

Gipson-Long picked up a win against the White Sox on Sunday while striking out five over five innings of a two-run ball, so he'll likely remain in the rotation while Wentz sticks in a relief role.

The six strikeouts were nice, but Wentz was largely ineffective once again, pushing his season ERA to 6.65, which would be the worst in the majors if he qualified. Three home runs accounted for most of the damage, and he's now allowed 21 long balls this season in 89.1 innings. Wentz may continue to get some chances as a starter or bulk reliever down the stretch, but he can be avoided in fantasy given his struggles.

Despite his struggles, Wentz will likely continue starting for the Tigers while they face a litany of injuries in their rotation.

Considering Wentz owns an 0-3 record, he may be pushed out of the starting rotation once Matt Manning (foot) comes back, but considering Manning has just started throwing, Wentz should be expected to make at least one more start.

The Orioles had trouble getting to Wentz Tuesday as he held Baltimore to just five baserunners through five innings. The southpaw now has two scoreless outings and two wins in his last three starts since being recalled from the minors. He will take a 3.13 ERA into his next start.

The lefty is slated to start again Monday against the Orioles, and he's making a push to begin 2023 in the Detroit rotation as well.

Wentz is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Astros at Comerica Park.

He'll be making his second straight turn through the rotation after striking out five Royals over 6.2 scoreless innings in his return to the big leagues last week. Unless he completely unravels against Houston, Wentz looks like he'll have the chance to finish the season as a starter for Detroit as he aims to build a case for being a full-time member of the rotation heading into 2023.

Wentz was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday.

The 24-year-old was previously announced as the starter for Friday's series opener in Kansas City, and Detroit has now officially added him to the big-league roster. Wentz made his MLB debut in May and allowed six runs over 2.2 innings, but he delivered four scoreless frames in his next outing before returning to the minors.

Detroit expects Wentz to stick in the rotation for a handful of starts the rest of the season, per the report. He has a 1.25 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 19:8 K:BB in 21.2 innings over his last five starts at Triple-A.

Wentz (shoulder) will be activated from Triple-A Toledo's 7-day injured list Wednesday to pitch in the Mud Hens' game that day against Omaha, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

According to McCosky, the Tigers plan to have Wentz make a tandem start along with Bryan Garcia, who was optioned to Triple-A earlier in the weekend. Wentz, who has been on the IL since early June with a left shoulder injury, will be rejoining Toledo after tossing three scoreless innings for High-A West Michigan on Wednesday. Wentz or Garcia could be options to rejoin the big club for its Aug. 15 doubleheader in Cleveland, when the Tigers will require a temporary sixth member of the rotation.

Wentz will be cleared to move on to the final phase of his recovery program from a left shoulder injury after he faced hitters in live batting practice Tuesday. He's scheduled to work two innings for West Michigan on Friday and could make an additional appearance or two in the lower ranks of the minors before being reinstated from Triple-A Toledo's 7-day injured list.

Over his 53.1 innings with the affiliate, Wentz submitted a 3.71 ERA and 58:33 K:BB. He may need to do a better job of curbing his walks at Erie early on during the upcoming season before a promotion to Triple-A Toledo is considered.

Wentz logged just 72 innings last season between Low-A Lakeland and Double-A Erie in his first year back following Tommy John surgery, recording a 4.50 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in the process. If the southpaw performs well at the Double-A level, he could head to Triple-A Toledo at some point.

While his results with Lakeland haven't been particularly strong, Wentz at least looks to have avoided setbacks in the build-up process. He's covered four innings in both of his last two outings for Lakeland, so he could soon be ready to slot back into the Toledo rotation.
