Joey Wentz Injury News & Updates
Keep up with the latest injuries from the Twins vs Braves game on Feb 22, 2026 with our Major League Baseball injury report.Sep 30, 2023
Optioned off roster
Wentz was optioned off the active roster Saturday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz wasn't going to pitch again after starting Friday's game against the Guardians, so he'll exit the roster to give the Tigers another bullpen arm, with Garrett Hill taking his place. Wentz will end the season with a 6.90 ERA and 1.68 WHIP in 105.2 innings of work.
Sep 30, 2023
Shelled in loss
Wentz (3-13) took the loss Friday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and three walks over 2.1 innings against the Guardians. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
It has a been a miserable year for Wentz as he is now tied for fifth in the league with 13 losses. The 25-year-old lefty's September was particularly rough as he's thrown 16.1 innings to the tune of an 8.39 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and 15:9 K:BB. Wentz ends his 2023 season with a gruesome 6.90 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 98:47 K:BB over 105.2 innings.
Sep 29, 2023
Gets one final start
Wentz is slated to start Friday's game against the Guardians at Comerica Park.
ANALYSIS
Since being called up from Triple-A Toledo on Aug. 30, Wentz has mostly been included in the rotation for the past month, though his most recent two appearances came as a bulk reliever. He'll move into a traditional starting role Friday, hoping to close the season on a high note as he stakes his claim to a more permanent spot in the rotation in 2024. Over 103.1 innings with the big club this season, Wentz has gone 3-12 with a 6.45 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 96:44 K:BB.
Sep 24, 2023
Takes 12th loss in bulk relief
Wentz (3-12) took the loss Saturday in Oakland, allowing two runs on three hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out five without issuing any walks.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old was deployed in a bulk relief role, entering in the second frame after Miguel Diaz fired 1.1 scoreless innings operating as the team's opener. In Wentz's longest outing since June 17, he allowed just three hits, but one happened to be a two-run homer that gave Oakland the lead and saddled the southpaw with his 12th loss of the year. Control has been an issue this year, as he had issued 4.1 BB/9 across 97.2 innings prior to Saturday, when Wentz avoided handing out any free passes for just the second time all season. It remains to be seen what role he fulfills in the final week of the campaign.
Sep 17, 2023
Picks up third win
Wentz (3-11) allowed three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out seven over 4.1 innings to earn the win Sunday over the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Wentz worked behind opener Miguel Diaz, who pitched a scoreless first inning. The Tigers' offense did the heavy lifting to establish a lead, powered by two home runs from Jake Rogers, before Wentz ran into some trouble in the fifth and sixth innings. While far from a stellar outing, it was enough for Wentz to earn his first win since July 29. The 25-year-old southpaw has given up 21 runs (18 earned) over 21.1 innings over his last six appearances and now has a 6.63 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 91:44 K:BB through 97.2 innings overall. He's lined up to make his next appearance on the road in Oakland.
Sep 17, 2023
Tabbed for bulk-relief role
Wentz is slated to work in bulk relief behind Miguel Diaz in Sunday's game against the Angels, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Diaz is expected to work only an inning or two before turning the game over to Wentz, who is essentially making his second straight turn through the rotation. While serving as a traditional starter in his last appearance Tuesday, Wentz took a no-decision while giving up five runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks. The Tigers will be hoping that the opener/bulk pitcher arrangement between Diaz and Wentz yields more favorable results Sunday.
Sep 14, 2023
Gets another turn through rotation
Wentz is scheduled to pitch either as a starter or bulk reliever in Sunday's game against the Angels, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz faltered in his return to the rotation Tuesday, failing to escape the third inning in his start against the Reds while allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks. The Tigers still plan to keep Wentz in the fold as part of a six-man rotation, though manager A.J. Hinch could elect to deploy the lefty behind an opener Sunday with the hope of coaxing better results from him. In four appearances out of the bullpen this season, Wentz has turned in a 4.11 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 12.7 K-BB% over 15.1 innings.
Sep 12, 2023
Struggles continue Tuesday
Wentz allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits across 2.2 innings and did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Reds. He walked three and struck out one.
ANALYSIS
While three of the runs he allowed were unearned, Wentz still wasn't particularly effective, allowing nine baserunners while only retiring eight batters. The lefty may stick in the rotation with Detroit dealing with a number of injuries, but he can't be trusted in fantasy at this point. Wentz will carry a 6.65 ERA into a potential start Monday against the Dodgers on the road, and he should be avoided in the tough spot.
Sep 11, 2023
Rejoining rotation Tuesday
Wentz is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Reds at Comerica Park, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz worked in relief in his last two appearances, with his most recent outing behind a 1.1-inning mop-up outing Sept. 5 against the Yankees. The young southpaw appeared set to stick in the bullpen after the Tigers called up Sawyer Gipson-Long from Triple-A Toledo to start Sunday's series finale against the White Sox, but Detroit may have room for both Gipson-Long and Wentz in the rotation if the club elects to expand to a six-man setup in the wake of Matt Manning's season-ending foot injury. Wentz will be making his 18th start of the season Tuesday and carries a 2-11 record, 6.65 ERA and 1.64 WHIP into the contest.
Sep 11, 2023
Working in bullpen
Wentz made his most recent appearance out of the Tigers bullpen in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Yankees, giving up one earned run on no hits and two walks over 1.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Wentz ended up being the pitcher of record in the game, dropping to 2-11 overall on the season. The relief appearance came on the heels of a five-inning outing as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen Aug. 30, when he struck out six while giving up four earned runs on five hits and three walks, also in a matchup with the Yankees. A spot in Detroit's rotation opened up this weekend when Matt Manning (foot) was placed on the 15-day injured list, but rather than appointing Wentz as the team's new No. 5 starter, the Tigers turned to Sawyer Gipson-Long to fill the spot. Gipson-Long picked up a win against the White Sox on Sunday while striking out five over five innings of a two-run ball, so he'll likely remain in the rotation while Wentz sticks in a relief role.
Aug 30, 2023
Covers five innings Wednesday
Wentz tossed five innings as the bulk pitcher in Wednesday's 6-2 loss to the Yankees. He allowed four runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out six.
ANALYSIS
The six strikeouts were nice, but Wentz was largely ineffective once again, pushing his season ERA to 6.65, which would be the worst in the majors if he qualified. Three home runs accounted for most of the damage, and he's now allowed 21 long balls this season in 89.1 innings. Wentz may continue to get some chances as a starter or bulk reliever down the stretch, but he can be avoided in fantasy given his struggles.
Aug 30, 2023
Called up as bulk pitcher
Wentz was recalled from Triple-A Toledo to serve as the Tigers' bulk pitcher Wednesday against the Yankees, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Brendan White is going to open the game in Detroit, but Wentz is expected to follow him and cover the majority of innings versus the visiting Yankees. Wentz, 25, has struggled to a 6.62 ERA through 17 starts and two relief appearances this season at the major-league level.
Aug 29, 2023
Likely pitching Wednesday
Wentz expected to be called up by the Tigers to pitch Wednesday against the Yankees, either as a starter or behind an opener, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Pressreports.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old has a 6.62 ERA in 19 appearances (17 starts) for Detroit this season, and it appears he'll receive another look in the majors. Wentz already joined the big-league club Tuesday, though he'll still need to be offically added to the active roster ahead of Wednesday's contest.
Aug 23, 2023
Sent back to Triple-A
The Tigers optioned Wentz to Triple-A Toledo on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was returned to the minors one day after he served as the 27th man for the Tigers' twin bill with the Guardians. He ended up starting the second game of the doubleheader and took a no-decision in the Tigers' 4-1 loss while striking out three and scattering four hits and two walks over five scoreless frames. Though the Tigers don't have a spot available for him in the rotation at the moment, Wentz should be first in line for a promotion if injuries test the big club's starting depth at any point over the final five and a half weeks of the season.
Aug 19, 2023
Stingy in no-decision
Wentz came away with a no-decision in the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Guardians, allowing four hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The lefty didn't let a Cleveland baserunner get past second base as he got 17 swinging strikes among his 83 pitches, but a Jose Cisnero meltdown in the eighth inning cost Wentz his third win of the season. With Alex Faedo holding down the fifth starter spot for the Tigers, Wentz will likely head back to Triple-A Toledo, but he'll likely see more big-league action before the season is done -- Detroit plays 13 games in 13 days in the middle of September. Wentz has held the opposition scoreless in two of three MLB appearances since the All-Star break, but he got hammered for eight runs over three innings by the Twins in the third outing.
Aug 18, 2023
Starting Game 2
Wentz was promoted from Triple-A Toledo as the Tigers' 27th man and will start the second game of Friday's doubleheader against Cleveland, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was sent to Triple-A on Aug. 8 after accumulating a 7.03 ERA and 1.68 WHIP through 79.1 innings, but he'll be brought back up in order to prevent Detroit from using two rotation pieces in one day. Wentz was decent in his latest Triple-A start, allowing two runs in 5.2 frames, but fantasy managers shouldn't expect to get much out of him during Friday's spot start.
Aug 8, 2023
Optioned to Toledo
Detroit optioned Wentz to Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was lit up for eight earned runs over just three innings in a spot start Monday versus the Twins. The 25-year-old left-hander carries a 7.03 ERA in 79.1 total innings of work this season at the major-league level.
Aug 7, 2023
Gets shelled Monday
Wentz (2-10) allowed eight runs on 10 hits across three innings to take the loss Monday against the Twins. He walked one and struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Wentz got off to a rough start, allowing four runs in the first inning, including a three-run bomb by Ryan Jeffers. Things didn't get much better from there, as Carlos Correa launched a three-run home run in the second inning. The Tigers kept Wentz out there simply to absorb some innings, but it was an ugly outing all around. The lefty now has a 7.03 ERA and can't be trusted in fantasy even if he sticks in the rotation, which may be the case due to injuries to other Detroit starters. Wentz is tentatively set to start again Sunday against the Red Sox and should be avoided in that spot.
Aug 7, 2023
Awarded another start
Wentz is slated to start Monday's game against the Twins at Comerica Park, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The young lefty will get at least one more turn through the rotation after he shined in a bulk-relief role his last time out July 29 in what was his first appearance in the big leagues in a month. In that appearance against the Marlins, Wentz struck out six over 4.2 scoreless innings while allowing four hits and one walk. The Tigers seem content to have Wentz pitch as a traditional starter Monday rather than out of the bullpen, an arrangement that could raise his innings floor but may work against him in qualifying for a win.
Jul 30, 2023
Earns win Saturday
Wentz (2-9) tossed 4.2 scoreless innings to earn the win Saturday against the Marlins. He allowed four hits and a walk, while striking out six.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was recalled from Triple-A Toledo earlier in the day and served as Detroit's primary pitcher, entering the game in the third inning for Beau Brieske. Wentz struggled mightily in his first stint with the Tigers this season, posting a 6.78 ERA and 1.63 WHIP across 71.2 innings. He posted an improved 4.00 ERA with Toledo, however, and could stick around in Detroit if the team trades Eduardo Rodriguez and/or Michael Lorenzen in advance of Tuesday's deadline.
Jul 29, 2023
Officially promoted
The Tigers recalled Wentz from Triple-A Toledo on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Wentz will serve as Detroit's primary pitcher Saturday against Miami behind Beau Brieske, who will start as the Tigers' opener. Wentz's MLB numbers haven't been excellent this year -- he holds a 6.78 ERA and 1.63 WHIP through 71.2 innings over 16 appearances (15 starts).
Jul 29, 2023
Likely bulk reliever Saturday
Wentz is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to work as the primary pitcher behind opener Beau Brieske against the Marlins, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz struck out 12 in 5.2 innings in his most recent start July 21, so he would be well rested for this appearance. The Tigers won't need Wentz beyond this outing unless they trade Eduardo Rodriguez and/or Michael Lorenzen before Tuesday's deadline.
Jun 29, 2023
Optioned to Triple-A
Wentz was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was rocked for six runs (four earned) on nine hits across 4.2 innings in a loss to the Rangers on Wednesday to push his ERA on the season to 6.09. He'll head to Toledo for a reset, with the hope of getting another opportunity in the Tigers' rotation down the line.
Jun 28, 2023
Gets hit hard again in loss
Wentz (1-9) allowed six runs (four earned) on nine hits across 4.2 innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Rangers. He walked two and struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Wentz dropped to 0-6 in his last nine starts with a 7.41 ERA during that stretch. The lefty wasn't much better before then, either, going 1-3 with a 6.09 ERA over his first seven appearances of the year. Wentz can't be trusted as a fantasy asset, but he figures to stick in Detroit's rotation for now with the team thin on rotation options due to injuries. He's penciled in to start again next Wednesday against Oakland.
Jun 24, 2023
Falls to 1-8
Wentz (1-8) took the loss Friday, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks over five innings against the Twins. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Friday saw Wentz take a step backward after he fanned a career-high nine against Minnesota his last time out. The Twins got to him this time around, twice for long balls, and Wentz has now dropped five straight decisions. The Tigers aren't going anywhere and Wentz is only 25 years old, but the team could eventually lose patience and end his audition in the rotation. His command and control issues point to a move to the bullpen eventually, if not later this season.
Jun 17, 2023
Season-high nine strikeouts in loss
Wentz (1-7) took the loss Saturday, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk over six innings against the Twins. He struck out nine.
ANALYSIS
Wentz had a perfect game going with one out in the fourth inning before walking Royce Lewis and then surrendering back-to-back singles to eventually put the Tigers down 0-2. Those would be the only two runs scored in the contest as the left-hander fell to 1-7 on the season despite posting a season-high nine strikeouts. Wentz also went six innings Saturday for the first time since May 3 against the Mets while issuing only one walk for the first time in three starts this month.
Jun 11, 2023
Allows two runs in bulk role
Wentz allowed two runs on a hit across 4.1 innings and did not factor into the decision in Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. He walked two and struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Wentz came in for the second inning after opener Will Vest retired the first three batters of the game. Wentz pitched well, with his only glaring mistake a two-run home run by Pavin Smith. It's a step in the right direction, though Wentz still has an ugly 7.23 ERA overall. The righty should take the mound again toward the end of next week against Minnesota on the road, and it's possible he operates as a bulk reliever there as well.
Jun 11, 2023
Working behind opener Sunday
Wentz will be the bulk pitcher for Sunday's game versus the Diamondbacks, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz will not make the start as scheduled, but instead work behind an opener with Will Vest now getting the start against Arizona. Wentz hasn't completed more than five innings in an outing since May 8 with an ERA of 7.49 overall in the 2023 campaign, and he'd be a risky streaming option even before knowing he wasn't going to get a chance to throw in the early inning(s).
Jun 5, 2023
Tagged with five runs
Wentz (1-6) yielded five runs on seven hits and five walks over 4.2 innings Monday, striking out four and taking a loss against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Wentz never settled into a groove Monday and was taken deep twice by Trea Turner. Over his last four starts, Wentz has allowed at least five runs three times while going 0-3. His ERA has ballooned up to 7.49 with a 44:22 K:BB through 51.2 frames. Assuming he gets another turn in the rotation, he's currently lined up to see the Diamondbacks at home.
May 31, 2023
Better against Texas
Wentz did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing a run on seven hits and a walk over 4.1 innings against Texas. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Wentz had allowed 11 runs over six innings in his last two starts, so Wednesday's performance against a potent Rangers offense was a step in the right direction. Still, Wentz was lucky to escape with just one run allowed, as he surrendered seven hits on 11 hard-hit balls in just 4.1 innings. The 25-year-old left-hander is 1-5 this season with a 7.28 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 40:17 K:BB through 47 innings. Despite his struggles, Wentz will likely continue starting for the Tigers while they face a litany of injuries in their rotation.
May 29, 2023
Likely to start Wednesday
Wentz will "most likely" start Wednesday for the Tigers versus the Rangers, manager A.J. Hinch told Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press on Monday.
ANALYSIS
The Tigers are holding off on officially tapping Wentz to start Wednesday, perhaps because they're considering him as a bulk reliever instead as they look to get him back on track. Wentz holds an ugly 14.54 ERA over his last three starts.
May 27, 2023
Set to remain in rotation
Wentz is expected to pitch again in the Tigers' upcoming series with the Rangers, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Although he's struggled mightily over his last three starts, posting a 14.54 ERA and 2.88 WHIP, Wentz is expected to get another shot to toe the rubber with the Tigers next week. Manager A.J. Hinch believes that the team may have to "do some creative things" to get the left-hander back on track, which could include having him enter the game after an opener draws the start. Regardless, Detroit's rotation remains very banged up and Wentz seems likely to stick around for now.
May 27, 2023
Another poor outing
Wentz (1-5) took the loss Friday, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks over four innings during a 12-3 loss to the White Sox. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Wentz allowed at least five earned runs for a second straight game and the fifth time this season. He boasts an ugly 7.80 ERA across 10 starts this year (42.2 innings), but he was much better in limited work last year, posting a 3.03 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 27:13 K:BB over seven starts (32.2 innings). If Wentz continues at his current pace, the Tigers may send him down to Triple-A, but they currently don't have many big-league ready options to replace the 25-year-old, as Spencer Turnbull (neck), Tarik Skubal (elbow), Beau Brieske (elbow), Casey Mize (elbow) and Matt Manning (foot) all remain on injured reserve.
May 21, 2023
Struggles again
Wentz (1-4) took the loss Sunday, allowing six runs on 10 hits over two innings during a 6-4 loss to Washington. He struck out one and didn't issue a walk.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was pulled in the third for a second consecutive start and has allowed nine runs on 16 hits during that stretch. Sunday's outing marked the fourth time the 25-year-old has allowed at least five runs this season, and he currently holds a 7.45 ERA over 38.2 innings. He was much better in limited work last year, posting a 3.03 ERA and 1.10 WHIP across seven starts (32.2 innings), but he's yet to find a groove in 2023.
May 14, 2023
Can't complete three innings
Went allowed three runs on six hits across 2.2 innings and did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Mariners. He walked one and struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Wentz picked up his first win of the season in his last start but took a step backwards Sunday. It was the righty's second shortest outing of the year, as the Tigers decided to turn things over to their bullpen after seeing Wentz toss 59 pitches without having much success. Injuries have forced him to step into a rotation spot, though fantasy managers should avoid Wentz and his 6.38 ERA.
May 8, 2023
Earns first 2023 win
Wentz (1-3) allowed two runs on three hits across 5.2 innings to earn the win Monday against the Guardians. He walked three and struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Wentz didn't have great control with the three walks, and that led to 92 pitches before he exited in the sixth, but it was still a solid start for the righty. He's established himself as a rotation regular with Beau Brieske (elbow) and Matt Manning (foot) going down in the early going, though he's been a bit unsteady with a 6.09 ERA. Wentz should start again over the weekend against the Mariners.
May 3, 2023
Takes no-decision in Game 1
Wentz allowed five runs on nine hits across six innings and did not factor into the decision in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Mets. He walked one and struck out two.
ANALYSIS
With Detroit playing two games Wednesday, they needed some length from Wentz in the opener, so he stayed out there despite getting tagged for three home runs. On a more positive note, he only needed 83 pitches to cover six innings, though his ERA did bump up to 6.67 for the season. Wentz should stick in the rotation with the likes of Beau Brieske (elbow), Matt Manning (foot), Casey Mize (elbow) and Tarik Skubal (elbow) all out at the moment. Wentz is tentatively set to start again early next week against Cleveland, but he can be mostly ignored in most formats at the moment.
Apr 27, 2023
Fans six in no decision
Wentz did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk over 5.2 innings against the Orioles. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was excellent Thursday, retiring 13 of the first 14 batters before Joey Ortiz tagged him for a single that drove in Jorge Mateo and Adam Frazier in the fifth. The 25-year-old has been incredibly inconsistent this season, allowing five runs in two of his five starts but stifled the Giants on April 14, striking out seven and allowing just one run. Thursday's contest also marked Wentz's second outing allowing no home runs. Considering Wentz owns an 0-3 record, he may be pushed out of the starting rotation once Matt Manning (foot) comes back, but considering Manning has just started throwing, Wentz should be expected to make at least one more start.
Apr 23, 2023
Knocked out early
Wentz (0-3) took the loss Saturday, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks over four innings against the Orioles. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Wentz rolled through the first two innings and had two outs in the third before allowing four straight batters to reach. James McCann added a homer in the fourth to put five runs on the lefty. Wentz was good in seven starts last season, posting a 3.03 ERA. But after four outings in 2023, Wentz has a 7.56 ERA.
Apr 15, 2023
Sharp in no-decision
Wentz didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 7-5 extra-innings win over the Giants, allowing one run on six hits and one walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw served up a leadoff homer to Thairo Estrada but was impressive for the rest of his outing, coming one out short of a quality start and generating 31 called plus swinging strikes among his 94 pitches. It was Wentz's best performance of the season, but he'll still carry a 6.39 ERA and mediocre 10:6 K:BB through 12.2 innings into his next start, likely to come at home next week against the Guardians.
Apr 8, 2023
Can't throw strikes in loss
Wentz (0-2) took the loss Saturday, allowing five runs on one hit and four walks over 1.2 innings against Boston without a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was able to get through the first without giving up a run, but the second was a disaster for the southpaw. He walked in two runs, and another three runs were charged to him on a grand slam by Rafael Devers after he left the contest. Just 22 of his 47 pitches landed in the strike zone, and it sees the 25-year-old's ERA balloon to 10.29 over seven innings. It will be hard to recommend Wentz as a streaming option whenever he's on the mound.
Apr 2, 2023
Coughs up three runs
Wentz (0-1) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk over 5.1 frames Sunday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
The rookie southpaw tossed three shutout frames before serving up a solo shot to Randy Arozarena in the fourth. Wentz was then tagged with a pair of runs in the sixth. He forced 11 swinging strikes, including four with the changeup. However, Wentz was hit hard all afternoon, resulting in an average exit velocity of 90.1 mph. He's scheduled for a home matchup with Boston next week.
Mar 24, 2023
Will open season in DET rotation
Wentz will begin the 2023 season in the Tigers' starting rotation, Chris McCosky of the Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
That's because Michael Lorenzen (groin) is headed for a season-opening stint on the 15-day injured list. Wentz might only get a couple of turns in early April, but he can look to put another good foot forward after delivering a 3.03 ERA across his first 32.2 major-league innings (seven starts) in 2022. He may have streaming appeal in deeper fantasy formats if the matchups are favorable.
Mar 21, 2023
Could be spot starter
With Michael Lorenzen (groin) uncertain to make his final Grapefruit League start, per Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, Wentz could be an option to fill the fifth rotation spot to begin the regular season.
ANALYSIS
Lorenzen is projected to be the team's regular No. 5 starter, but his groin strain has his status up in the air heading into the regular season. Detroit is lined up to use its fifth starter April 4 against Houston, so Wentz or Beau Brieske may be needed if Lorenzen can't go. It seemed like Wentz was possibly ticketed for the minors out of camp, so any stay with the Tigers may be brief, though he did compile a solid 3.03 ERA across seven starts for the club last year.
Feb 21, 2023
To begin year in minors?
Wentz seems unlikely to earn a rotation or bullpen spot with the Tigers to begin the year, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz made seven starts for Detroit last year and posted a solid 3.03 ERA, but Spencer Turnbull and Matthew Boyd are back in the mix, joining Eduardo Rodriguez, Matt Manning and newcomer Michael Lorenzen. A number of those pitchers missed significant time in 2022, however, so Wentz figures to provide good insurance if a need arises in 2023. He's off the fantasy radar at the moment but could see his value rise if he gets a regular gig in the majors.
Oct 2, 2022
Demoted after Sunday's start
Wentz was optioned to Triple-A Toledo after he allowed two unearned runs on two hits and four walks over 4.2 innings Sunday against the Twins, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. The left-hander had four strikeouts and didn't factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Wentz pitched well but didn't qualify for the victory since he was pulled during the fifth inning after Minnesota tallied two runs on three walks, an error and a sacrifice fly. It was the 24-year-old's final outing of the season, and he closed the campaign with a 3.03 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 27:13 K:BB across 32.2 innings. He should enter spring training with a chance to secure a rotation spot to begin 2023 after a strong showing in his first taste of the big leagues this year.
Sep 27, 2022
Lasts five innings in no-decision
Wentz allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four in five innings in a 4-3 extra-inning win Tuesday against Kansas City. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Wentz allowed a two-run homer in the second and an RBI triple in the fourth to account for the three runs against him. All five hits he allowed went for extra bases. The 24-year-old returned to the majors at the beginning of September and allowed just two runs in 16.1 innings over his first three starts. All in all, he has a 2.11 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 18:7 K:BB in 21.1 innings over four starts this month.

Scoreless outing in win
Wentz (2-2) earned the win Tuesday, allowing no runs on two hits and two walks over 5.2 innings against the Orioles. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The Orioles had trouble getting to Wentz Tuesday as he held Baltimore to just five baserunners through five innings. The southpaw now has two scoreless outings and two wins in his last three starts since being recalled from the minors. He will take a 3.13 ERA into his next start.

Pitches well but takes loss
Wentz (1-2) allowed two runs on four hits across four innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Astros. He walked one and struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Wentz needed 91 pitches to cover his four innings but managed to slow down a strong Houston lineup while he was in there. However, the Tigers only mustered a single run against Cristian Javier and three relievers. That saddled Wentz with the loss, though he's looked good in his two September appearances, allowing just the two runs across 10.2 innings while striking out 10 and walking two. The lefty is slated to start again Monday against the Orioles, and he's making a push to begin 2023 in the Detroit rotation as well.
Sep 14, 2022
Nabs another start
Wentz is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Astros at Comerica Park.
ANALYSIS
He'll be making his second straight turn through the rotation after striking out five Royals over 6.2 scoreless innings in his return to the big leagues last week. Unless he completely unravels against Houston, Wentz looks like he'll have the chance to finish the season as a starter for Detroit as he aims to build a case for being a full-time member of the rotation heading into 2023.
Sep 10, 2022
Pitches well in third start
Wentz (1-1) earned the win against the Royals Friday, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out five and walking one over 6.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Wentz looked brilliant Friday, tossing 53 of 87 pitches for strikes across 6.2 frames and limiting the Royals to just three baserunners, all of whom were stranded. Wentz had not appeared in a game for the Tigers since May 31, giving up six runs across 6.2 innings in two starts before being demoted. The lefty was able to cut his ERA in half Friday, taking it to 4.05.

Officially promoted Thursday
Wentz was recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old was previously announced as the starter for Friday's series opener in Kansas City, and Detroit has now officially added him to the big-league roster. Wentz made his MLB debut in May and allowed six runs over 2.2 innings, but he delivered four scoreless frames in his next outing before returning to the minors.
Sep 5, 2022
Joining big-league rotation
Wentz will start Friday for the Tigers in Kansas City, Adrian Garro of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Detroit expects Wentz to stick in the rotation for a handful of starts the rest of the season, per the report. He has a 1.25 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 19:8 K:BB in 21.2 innings over his last five starts at Triple-A.

Ready to return to Triple-A
Wentz (shoulder) will be activated from Triple-A Toledo's 7-day injured list Wednesday to pitch in the Mud Hens' game that day against Omaha, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
According to McCosky, the Tigers plan to have Wentz make a tandem start along with Bryan Garcia, who was optioned to Triple-A earlier in the weekend. Wentz, who has been on the IL since early June with a left shoulder injury, will be rejoining Toledo after tossing three scoreless innings for High-A West Michigan on Wednesday. Wentz or Garcia could be options to rejoin the big club for its Aug. 15 doubleheader in Cleveland, when the Tigers will require a temporary sixth member of the rotation.
Jul 28, 2022
Starts up rehab assignment
Wentz (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment at High-A West Michigan on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Wentz will be cleared to move on to the final phase of his recovery program from a left shoulder injury after he faced hitters in live batting practice Tuesday. He's scheduled to work two innings for West Michigan on Friday and could make an additional appearance or two in the lower ranks of the minors before being reinstated from Triple-A Toledo's 7-day injured list.

Resumes facing hitters
Wentz (shoulder) threw a live batting practice session Tuesday at the Tigers' spring training complex in Florida, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz has been sidelined since May 31, when he suffered a shoulder injury while making a spot start for the Tigers. Since he was optioned to Triple-A Toledo following that outing, Wentz currently resides on the affiliate's 7-day injured list rather than the Tigers' 10-day IL. Now that he's facing hitters again, Wentz could soon be cleared to head out on a rehab assignment at one of the Tigers' lower-level affiliates before he rejoins the Triple-A rotation.
Jun 14, 2022
Should throw soon
Wentz isn't dealing with anything worse than a stinger in his shoulder and should resume throwing soon, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz left his May 31 start against the Twins with what was originally called a strained left shoulder, but it looks as though the injury isn't as bad as originally feared. He still has work to do before he's able to return to game action, but the result could have been much worse for the Tigers.
Jun 8, 2022
No timeline for return
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Wednesday that Wentz (shoulder) remains sidelined and is without a clear timeline to resume throwing, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. "It's kind of similar to a pinched nerve," Hinch said, while describing Wentz's injury. "He's getting some sensation through the shoulder based on what's going on in his neck."
ANALYSIS
Wentz picked up the injury while making a spot start May 31 against the Twins in the second game of a doubleheader. The Tigers optioned him to Triple-A Toledo following the outing, so the organization has the luxury of proceeding slowly with his recovery without having to worry about an injured Wentz occupying a spot on the 26-man roster. Detroit has endured numerous injuries to starting pitchers this season, but with Eduardo Rodriguez (oblique) on pace to come off the 15-day injured list next week and Michael Pineda (finger) perhaps a couple weeks away from a return of his own, Wentz likely won't be in line to rejoin the big club soon even if he quickly moves past his shoulder issue.
Jun 1, 2022
Getting medical checkup
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Wednesday that Wentz will undergo further testing on his injured shoulder, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Tigers classified Wentz's injury as a left shoulder strain when he exited his start in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Twins after tossing four scoreless frames, but the upcoming checkup should provide more information with regard to a possible recovery timeline for the 24-year-old. Detroit had already optioned Wentz to Triple-A Toledo following Tuesday's outing, so he could be placed on the affiliate's 7-day injured list in the coming days.
May 31, 2022
Exits with shoulder strain
Wentz was removed from Tuesday's start in Game 2 of the doubleheader against the Twins with a strained left shoulder.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old was promoted to star Tuesday's nightcap and pitched well with only one single allowed over four scoreless innings, but he was forced to leave early due to the injury. Wentz was likely to returned to Triple-A Toledo regardless since he was serving as the 27th man for the twin bill, but the injury could affect his availability for another call-up to the big leagues.
May 31, 2022
Called up ahead of start
The Tigers recalled Wentz from Triple-A Toledo ahead of his scheduled start in the second game of the team's doubleheader with the Twins in Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Detroit is designating Wentz as its 27th man for the twin bill, so he's expected to be returned to Triple-A following Tuesday's games. The 24-year-old lefty will be looking for better results in his second MLB start, after he struggled mightily in his Tigers debut back on May 11. He lasted just 2.2 innings in a start against Oakland, giving up six earned runs on seven hits and two walks.
May 28, 2022
Set to start for Tigers on Tuesday
Wentz (lower leg) will be called up as the Tigers' 27th man to start the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Twins, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz exited Wednesday's start at Triple-A Toledo after he was hit on the shin by a comebacker, but the injury isn't a significant concern since he's been cleared to make his second major-league start Tuesday. The southpaw struggled in his big-league debut against the Athletics on May 11, as he allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out one in 2.2 innings.
May 26, 2022
Exits Wednesday's start
Wentz was removed from Wednesday's start at Triple-A Toledo after he was hit on the shin by a comebacker, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz lasted five innings during his first start after being sent down, but he was removed from Wednesday's outing after just two innings. The southpaw underwent X-rays that came back negative, so manager A.J. Hinch is hopeful that Wentz isn't dealing with a significant injury.
May 11, 2022
Sent down after MLB debut
Wentz (0-1) was optioned to Triple-A Toledo following Wednesday's 9-0 defeat versus the A's, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. He took the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits with two walks and one strikeout over 2.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old was called up for his big-league debut Wednesday but laid an egg against Oakland, as he retired only eight of the 16 batters he faced. Wentz will return to Toledo, where he has a 4.12 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 26:10 K:BB across 19.2 innings this season.
May 10, 2022
Joining big-league roster
Wentz was called up from Triple-A Toledo and will start Wednesday against the A's.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old was previously named as the starter for Wednesday, and he was added to the active roster following Tuesday's doubleheader. It'll be Wentz's MLB debut after posting a 4.12 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 26:10 K:BB across 19.2 innings with Toledo to begin 2022.
May 9, 2022
Set for big-league debut
Wentz will make his MLB debut Wednesday against the Athletics, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz owns a strong 33.8 percent strikeout rate through five starts for Triple-A Toledo this season, though that's come with a 13.0 percent walk rate and a 4.12 ERA. Since his return from Tommy John surgery in May of 2021, he owns a mediocre 4.42 ERA in 23 starts, but the Tigers will nevertheless give him a chance on the biggest stage. He'll at least get a relatively easy opponent to debut against, but he'll need to find the strike zone more consistently if he's to stick in the majors.
Mar 23, 2022
Opening year at Double-A
The Tigers optioned Wentz to Double-A Erie on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Though Wentz was participating in big-league camp, he was never a realistic option for the Opening Day roster. After undergoing Tommy John surgery in March 2020, Wentz made his return to game action last May, ultimately picking up 13 starts for Erie. Over his 53.1 innings with the affiliate, Wentz submitted a 3.71 ERA and 58:33 K:BB. He may need to do a better job of curbing his walks at Erie early on during the upcoming season before a promotion to Triple-A Toledo is considered.
Mar 14, 2022
Throws bullpen Monday
Wentz threw a bullpen session Monday and looked comfortable on the mound, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz logged just 72 innings last season between Low-A Lakeland and Double-A Erie in his first year back following Tommy John surgery, recording a 4.50 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in the process. If the 24-year-old looks sharp this spring, the organization will likely increase his workload, and Wentz could push his way up to the Triple-A level at some point in 2022.
Sep 16, 2021
Shut down for season
Wentz has been shut down for the remainder of the season for rest purposes, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz isn't dealing with an injury, but he won't pitch again in 2021 since the Tigers want to monitor his workload after he underwent Tommy John surgery last year. The southpaw made 18 starts between Low-A Lakeland and Double-A Erie this year, and he recorded a 4.50 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 72 innings.
Jun 23, 2021
Reinstated from injured list
Wentz (elbow) was reinstated from the 7-day minor-league injured list Wednesday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Wentz made five rehab appearances for Low-A Lakeland across the last few weeks and posted a 6.75 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 18.2 innings. He's now been cleared to return following his recovery from March 2020 Tommy John surgery, and he'll start for Double-A Erie on Wednesday. If the southpaw performs well at the Double-A level, he could head to Triple-A Toledo at some point.
Jun 8, 2021
Begins rehab assignment
Wentz (elbow) has made three rehab starts for Low-A Lakeland, posting a 7.45 ERA, 1.96 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB in 9.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Wentz was assigned to Triple-A Toledo coming out of spring training, but he has yet to debut for the affiliate while the Tigers continue to ease him back slowly from March 2020 Tommy John surgery. While his results with Lakeland haven't been particularly strong, Wentz at least looks to have avoided setbacks in the build-up process. He's covered four innings in both of his last two outings for Lakeland, so he could soon be ready to slot back into the Toledo rotation.
Mar 12, 2021
Optioned to Triple-A
Wentz (elbow) was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Friday.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old was in major-league camp but is still working through his throwing program as he makes his return from Tommy John surgery in March 2020. Wentz previously said he may be able to begin a rehab assignment in late April or early May.
