Makes roster for WC Series
Lawlar has made the roster for the Diamondbacks' Wild Card Series matchup against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar went 4-for-31 (.129) with zero extra-base hits after being promoted Sept. 7 from Triple-A Reno, but he is a highly talented 21-year-old infielder with the ability to provide a spark off the bench. Prior to his call-up last month, Lawlar registered an .874 OPS with 20 homers and 36 steals in 105 games this summer between the Double-A and Triple-A levels.
Sep 19, 2023
On bench Tuesday
Lawlar is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar has gone 3-for-20 (.150) with zero extra-base hits and eight strikeouts in eight major-league games since being called up Sept. 7 from Triple-A Reno. It appears the talented 21-year-old infielder will be a part-time player for the Diamondbacks down the stretch.
Sep 16, 2023
Sits for third straight
Lawlar remains on the bench for Saturday's game against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
The Diamondbacks gave Lawlar a chance to prove he can help the team down the stretch, calling up the 2021 sixth-overall pick in early September despite the fact that he'd played in just 16 Triple-A games. He's only appeared in six MLB contests thus far but looks overmatched through his first 18 plate appearances, striking out eight times while recording just two hits, both singles. WIth the Diamondbacks in as tight of a playoff race as possible - they entered play Saturday tied for the third and final Wild Card spot - it's no surprise to see the unproven Lawlar remain on the bench while Geraldo Perdomo continues to start at shortstop.
Sep 15, 2023
Sitting Friday
Lawlar isn't in Arizona's lineup Friday against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar has gone just 2-for-17 at the plate through the first six games of his MLB career, so the D-backs will sit him against Justin Steele. Geraldo Perdomo will fill in at shortstop while Evan Longoria covers third base Friday.
Sep 14, 2023
On bench Thursday
Lawlar is not in the lineup Thursday against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar has gone 2-for-16 (.125) with no walks and seven strikeouts in five major-league games since his promotion from Triple-A Reno last week. Geraldo Perdomo will start at shortstop and bat ninth for the Diamondbacks on Thursday as Emmanuel Rivera covers third base and hits eighth.
Sep 14, 2023
Snaps hitless run
Lawlar went 1-for-3 in Wednesday's 7-1 loss to the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar's bunt single in the sixth inning snapped a stretch of 13 at-bats without a hit. He's 2-for-16 since being called up, and neither hit has left the infield. The Diamondbacks have settled in to starting Lawlar against left-handers only, and he was pinch hit for in his final at-bat Wednesday when the Mets brought in right-handed reliever Trevor Gott.
Sep 12, 2023
Not in lineup Tuesday
Lawlar is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar has gone 1-for-13 with a single and seven strikeouts since getting called up to the Diamondbacks last Thursday. Geraldo Perdomo will play shortstop and bat ninth Tuesday in Queens as Jace Peterson covers third base and hits seventh.
Sep 12, 2023
Removed for pinch hitter
Lawlar started at shortstop and went 0-for-2 with a strikeout before he was removed for a pinch hitter in Monday's 4-3 win over the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar returned to the lineup after a one-day break due to a minor hand injury. The right-handed hitter was pinch hit for in the sixth inning against righty reliever Sean Reid-Foley, the first time manager Torey Lovullo has removed the young shortstop from a game. Lawlar is hitless over the 11 at-bats with seven strikeouts.
Sep 11, 2023
Checks back into lineup
Lawlar (hand) will start at shortstop and bat eighth in Monday's game against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Arizona will get both of its starting middle infielders back for the series opener at Citi Field after both Lawlar and second baseman Ketel Marte (knee) exited the lineup for Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Cubs. The Diamondbacks' top prospect has gotten off to a slow start since being called up from Triple-A Reno last week, going 1-for-11 with no walks and six strikeouts.
Sep 10, 2023
Sitting Sunday
Lawlar (hand) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
The rookie shortstop exited Saturday's contest after being hit by a pitch on his right hand, though according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, manager Torey Luvollo said Lawlar's hand is fine and he's simply receiving a day off. Geraldo Perdomo will shift to shortstop while Emmanuel Rivera starts at the hot corner.
Sep 10, 2023
Bats second, HBP
Lawlar batted second and was hit by a pitch on a knuckle of his right hand in Saturday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Cubs, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports. He remained in the game but is considered day-to-day.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar, who was hit by a pitch in the top of the 10th inning, stayed in the game and eventually scored the game-winning run. He also made a nice defensive play in the bottom of the 10th, but the Diamondbacks are awaiting results of imaging conducted following the game before making a determination of his status for the series finale Sunday. The prospect made a third consecutive start since being promoted from Triple-A Reno, and manager Torey Lovullo moved him up the batting order against a left-hander. Lawlar batted eighth in his first two starts, which came against right-handers. He has one hit in 11 at-bats and struck out six times over 12 plate appearances.
Sep 9, 2023
Starts again
Lawlar started at shortstop and went 0-for-3 in Friday's 1-0 win over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar made a second consecutive start after getting called up Thursday. It was a version of the lineup that Arizona manager Torey Lovullo described as "where I'm at right now," to Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic. "I definitely had some options, but I just feel like for right now, I wanted to lean on him a little bit and continue to do so," the manager said. It sounds like Lawlar will be a near-everyday starter.
Sep 8, 2023
Makes MLB debut
Lawlar started at shortstop and went 1-for-4 in Thursday's 6-2 win over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar was promoted from Triple-A Reno ahead of Thursday's series-opener and made his MLB debut. He collected his first hit in the fourth inning, beating out an infield grounder to third base, and made a couple of nifty plays in the field. Of note, the Diamondbacks faced a right-hander. Prior to Lawlar's promotion, that typically meant the switch hitting Geraldo Perdomo at shortstop and a rotation of lefty-batters at third base. That changed Thursday, when the right-handed hitting Lawlar started at short and Perdomo moved to third base, which suggests these two may make up the left side of the infield going forward, regardless of the handedness of that day's starter.
Sep 7, 2023
Promotion official
Arizona selected Lawlar's contract from Triple-A Reno ahead of his major-league debut Thursday against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar has officially arrived in the majors at age 21, almost exactly 26 months after being selected sixth overall in the 2021 MLB Draft out of a Dallas high school. He caught fire toward the end of his run this summer with Double-A Amarillo and carried that over into a .358/.438/.612 slash line in 80 plate appearances at the Triple-A level. Lawlar will play shortstop and bat eighth in his debut for the Diamondbacks on Thursday as Geraldo Perdomo slides over to third base.
Sep 6, 2023
Getting call to majors
Lawlar will be promoted to the majors ahead of Thursday's series opener against the Cubs, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar made the jump from Double-A Amarillo to Triple-A Reno in mid-August and has since produced an eye-popping .358/.438/.612 batting line in 80 plate appearances. Overall this season between Double-A and Triple-A, he's put up an .874 OPS with 20 homers and 36 steals across 105 games. Selected as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft out of a Dallas high school, the 21-year-old should get regular starts on the Diamondbacks' infield down the stretch as they try to claim one of the three NL Wild Card spots. Lawlar has almost exclusively played shortstop in the minors, but Arizona is most in need of help at third base.

Makes impression at Triple-A
Lawlar went 1-for-4 with two walks, a home run, four RBI and an additional run scored for Triple-A Reno on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar made a splash in his first game at the Triple-A level. He belted a 420-foot two-run homer in his second plate appearance and later walked with the bases loaded twice. He was scheduled to debut for Reno on Monday, but there were flight issues -- cancelled flight, lost bags -- so his introduction waited until Tuesday. The shortstop was promoted over the weekend after hitting .263/.366/.471 with 15 home runs and 33 steals for Double-A Amarillo.
Aug 14, 2023
Heading to Triple-A
Lawlar was promoted to Triple-A Reno on Sunday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar began the 2022 campaign at Double-A Amarillo and was a well-rounded contributor, slashing .263/.366/.471 with 15 homers, 77 runs, 48 RBI and 33 stolen bases in 89 games. The 18-year-old will now be one step away from the majors and could be in the mix to be called up late in 2023 or early in 2024 if he performs well with the Triple-A club.
Jun 13, 2023
Locked in at Double-A
Lawlar only has eight strikeouts in his last 16 games for Double-A Amarillo and is hitting .368 with three home runs and five steals in 68 at-bats over that stretch.
ANALYSIS
Something has seemingly clicked for Lawlar, as he had a 31.7 percent strikeout rate in his first 32 games of the season and has an 11 percent strikeout rate over his last 16 games. The 20-year-old shortstop's .286 BABIP and early-season strikeout woes are suppressing his season numbers, but he is still on track for a 20/30 season and should get a promotion to Triple-A this summer if his current plate skills hold.

Org stays positive amid slump
Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen is not bothered by Lawlar's slump to start the season at Double-A Amarillo, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. The shortstop and Arizona's top prospect is batting .165/.299/.331 over 147 plate appearances.
ANALYSIS
Hazen said he prefers if all prospects could be like Corbin Carroll but spun Lawlar's struggles as a positive, noting the adversity gives a young player a chance to adjust and figure it out. "It's probably more approach, pitch selection, how he's being pitched," Hazen said. Specifically, the organization is focused on his reaction to pitches on the inner half, trying to keep the ball away from him and using the entire field. One bright note is that slump has not affected Lawlar's defense, which Hazen noted has been "exceptional."

Struggling at Double-A
Lawlar has returned to action after missing a few days for Double-A Amarillo with a wrist injury.
ANALYSIS
The 20-year-old shortstop is hitting .162/.296/.342 with five home runs and 10 steals in 32 games. Dating back to last year, Lawlar has a .183/.297/.347 slash line and 73:30 K:BB in 52 games at Double-A. He has a high power/speed ceiling, but legitimate hit tool concerns are starting to emerge. His .203 BABIP this season is a sign of some misfortune, and his 29.7 percent linedrive rate, 37.8 percent flyball rate and 29 percent hard-hit rate are all signs of strong quality of contact. Lawlar's stock has decreased this season, but there are reasons to expect his performance to trend up.
May 17, 2023
Suffers wrist injury
Lawlar was removed from Tuesday's game for Double-A Amarillo after getting hit in the right wrist, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
A team spokesperson said x-rays came back negative, and Lawlar is considered day-to-day. One of Arizona's top prospects, Lawlar is scuffling with a .178 average and .669 OPS.
Apr 27, 2023
Plays hero in comeback
Lawlar went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI for Double-A Amarillo in Wednesday's comeback win over Frisco.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar figured prominently in the Sod Poodles' improbable comeback. With Amarillo trailing, 11-1, in the seventh inning, Lawler jacked a three-run homer to begin the comeback. The team scored another seven runs in the eighth before Lawlar walked off the RoughRiders with a single in the 10th. The Diamondbacks' highly regarded shortstop prospect has an .835 OPS with four homers, two doubles, 12 RBI, six steals and nine runs through 15 games.
Apr 16, 2023
Maintains on-base streak
Lawlar went 1-for-3 with a walk, a home run and a stolen base for Double-A Amarillo on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar launched his second home run of the season in the fourth inning and has reached base safely in all eight games for the Sod Poodles, who went by their alternative identity, the Calf Fries, for the night. Lawlar is 8-for-29 with six walks and four extra-base hits while stealing four bases.
Feb 25, 2023
Ready for start of spring games
Lawlar (shoulder) will bat sixth and play shortstop Saturday against Oakland.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar fractured his left scapula after being hit by a pitch at the Arizona Fall League, but his expected timeline of 6-to-8 weeks meant that his readiness for spring training never seemed in much doubt. The 2021 sixth-overall pick has yet to reach Triple-A, but he hit .303/.401/.509 across four levels last year, so a debut sometime late in the 2023 season seems possible.
Oct 25, 2022
Shut down after HBP
Lawlar will miss the next 6-to-8 weeks after being struck by a pitch Friday and suffering a fractured left scapula, Sam Dykstra of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
This injury shouldn't impact Lawlar's availability for the start of spring training, but it's certainly disappointing to see his fall season cut short. He was playing solid ball in the Arizona Fall League prior to the injury, as he was batting .278 with two home runs, seven RBI, four stolen bases and nine runs scored across 11 contests with Salt River.
Oct 13, 2022
Flashing in Arizona Fall League
Lawlar hit just .212/.299/.353 over 20 games in Double-A to wrap up the 2022 regular season, but he's impressed through six contests in the Arizona Fall League, smashing two homers and stealing two bases with a 7:7 BB:K.
ANALYSIS
It's well worth keeping in mind the context of Lawlar's small sample of Double-A struggles -- this is a 19-year-old kid who was on his second promotion of the season after opening in Single-A. Lawlar's overall line is a far more accurate indicator of his potential: .303/.401/.509 with 16 home runs, 39 steals and a 57:115 BB:K. He'll need to clip that strikeout rate a bit and show more power in the high minors, but Lawlar certainly looks the part of a future All-Star. Arizona probably won't rush him to the big leagues, so look for him to spend much of 2023 in Double-A, with a mid-to-late-season promotion to Triple-A if he excels as expected.
Aug 24, 2022
Rises to Double-A
The Diamondbacks promoted Lawlar from High-A Hillsboro to Double-A Amarillo on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
With outfielder Corbin Carroll soon expected to receive a promotion from Triple-A Reno to the big club, Lawlar will become the Diamondbacks' top prospect in the minors before long. The righty-hitting shortstop, who went 1-for-4 with a run scored in his debut for Amarillo on Tuesday, is now at his fourth affiliate of 2022 after slashing .288/.385/.477 with three home runs and 13 stolen bases in 130 plate appearances at Hillsboro.
Jul 31, 2022
Adjusting to High-A
Lawler went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for High-A Hillsboro on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
After some initial struggles for the Hops, Lawler has found a groove with multiple hits in three of the last seven games. He's 9-for-32 (.281) with four doubles, two RBI and six runs scored during that stretch.
Jul 14, 2022
Added to Futures game
Lawlar has been added to the All-Star Futures Game as an injury replacement, Jose M. Romero of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar joins fellow Arizona prospect Corbin Carroll as participants in the showcase of minor-league talent. He's batting .332 in the minors this season, with most of that work at Single-A Visalia. Lawlar was promoted to High-A Hillsboro last week and is batting .095 (2-for-21) through six games for the Hops.
Jul 5, 2022
Gets call to High-A
The Diamondbacks promoted Lawlar from Single-A Visalia to High-A Hillsboro on Monday.
ANALYSIS
He made his debut for Hillsboro later Monday, going 1-for-4 with a stolen base, an RBI and a run. The 20-year-old was bumped up a level after he slashed .365/.461/.623 with eight home runs and 23 stolen bases across 191 plate appearances with Visalia. Regarded as one of the top prospects in the lower levels of the minors, Lawlar is an excellent asset in dynasty leagues and should make a push for the majors by the 2024 season, if not sooner.
Jun 26, 2022
Back in action for Single-A club
Lawlar (back) has gone 5-for-8 with a triple, two doubles, five runs, three RBI and a stolen base in two games for Single-A Visalia since returning from the 7-day injured list Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar has resumed raking for Visalia since rejoining the full-season affiliate following a six-game rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League. Before he was shut down for about three weeks with the back injury, Lawlar slashed .352/.461/.600 over 33 games at Single-A.
Jun 15, 2022
Collects five hits in rehab
Lawlar (back) went 5-for-5 with a double, a triple, two RBI and three runs scored for the Diamondbacks' affiliate in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League.
ANALYSIS
This was Lawlar's second rehab game in the ACL -- he was hitless in two at-bats and hit by pitch Monday -- in his bid to get back to Single-A Visalia. He started at shortstop and played seven of eight innings in the field before being taken out for the final frame. The shortstop appeared to be unaffected by the back injury that landed him on the injured list May 25. Prior to his injury, Lawlar sported a .352/.461/.600 slash with seven home runs, three triples, four doubles, 30 runs scored, 21 RBI, and 18 stolen bases over 33 games. A return to the Rawhide is expected by the end of the week.
Jun 11, 2022
Set to return
Lawlar (back) is expected to play in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League beginning Monday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar will play several games there before returning to Single-A Visalia, where he batted .352 with seven home runs and 18 stolen bases prior to hitting the injured list. The shortstop experienced discomfort in his back last month, which was eventually diagnosed as a benign bone growth on the third rib of his right side. Lawlar was examined by an interventional radiologist and was cleared to resume playing. If the issue does recur, it could be addressed with an ablation procedure.
May 26, 2022
Evaluated for back injury
Lawlar was placed on the seven-day injured list with a back injury Thursday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
The issue was described as "mid back soreness," and Lawlar was further evaluated in Phoenix on Thursday. He is also set to meet with a team physician Friday. It's a tough break for one of the most exciting prospects in the league, as he's hitting .352/.461/.600 with seven homers and 18 steals through 33 games with Single-A Visalia.
May 22, 2022
Double-digit hit streak
Lawlar went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and a second run scored for Single-A Visalia on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar served as the designated hitter Saturday and lived up to the title. He hit a solo homer in the first inning then followed up with a two-run single in the fourth. The 19-year-old shortstop extended a batting streak to 10 games, during which he's 20-for-44 (.455) with seven extra-base hits, 10 RBI and 11 runs scored.
May 18, 2022
Raking in Single-A
Lawlar is hitting .336/.452/.555 with six homers and 17 steals through 29 games for Single-A Visalia this year.
ANALYSIS
The No. 6 overall pick in last year's draft, Lawlar had an abbreviated 2021 due to August shoulder surgery, but he's been back with a vengeance this year. Still just 19, Lawlar has flashed a spectacular bat and baserunning ability. Less spectacular: his fielding, as he's made 12 errors in 23 games at shortstop, good for a horrendous .864 fielding percentage. If he doesn't improve on that front, a move to second base (or perhaps the outfield) may be forthcoming, but scouts have generally been bullish on his ability to stick at shortstop, so that can't be ruled out. Arizona will probably bring him along fairly steadily, but there's a lot to like about the profile.
Apr 13, 2022
Raps multiple hits
Lawlar went 4-for-6 with a double, a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored for Low-A Visalia on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar has come out of the gate firing. He's hit in all four contests thus far, including three straight with multiple hits. The 19-year-old is 9-for-20 with a double, a home run, three RBI, two stolen bases and three runs scored. The sixth-overall pick in 2021 didn't play much last year due to a shoulder injury is showing a power/speed combo early in 2022.
Apr 11, 2022
Showing power, speed at Low-A
Lawlar, who opened the year at Low-A Visalia, is hitting .357 with one home run, one steal on two attempts and a 6:1 K:BB in 14 at-bats.
ANALYSIS
He is making up for lost time after a shoulder injury limited him to just two games in rookie ball last year. Lawlar is already showing off his power/speed upside through three full-season games, but it's worth keeping an eye on his strikeout rate in the early going.
Apr 3, 2022
Makes spring start
Lawlar went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's spring training game against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Lawlar, the Diamondbacks' first-round draft pick in 2021, made his first Cactus League start. His initial season of professional ball ended early with a shoulder injury, but the prospect is ready to go after rehabbing from surgery to repair a torn labrum. There were some nerves showing as the 19-year-old was picked off first base and made a high throw from shortstop, per Jake Rill of MLB.com.
