So long as Manuel Margot and Harold Ramirez remain healthy, Lowe may find it hard to earn consistent playing time.

Lowe might not have a set starting job, but he should see plenty of action between all three outfield spots and designated hitter. The 25-year-old has struggled in the majors to this point, but there's some post-hype sleeper appeal here if he can make enough contact.

Lowe is in competition with the likes of Jonathan Aranda, Vidal Brujan and Luke Raley for a bench spot, though he's helped his cause by slugging three homers and a double across 43 plate appearances this spring. Lowe was a touted prospect entering the 2022 campaign, though he struck out at a 33.3 percent clip across 198 appearances with the Rays last season.

Lowe is hitting .310/.399/.538 with 12 homers, 21 steals and a 32.5 percent strikeout rate through 74 games with Triple-A Durham.

He's been drawing a good amount of walks (12.9 percent), but Lowe continues to strike out at a horrendous pace. The last couple weeks are particularly illustrative of Lowe's ways, as he's hit .367 with a 1.078 OPS and eight steals over 13 games (49 plate appearances), and yet he's struck out 23 times in that span (a 39.7 percent clip). As impressive as Lowe's production has been in Triple-A over the last two seasons, his swing-and-miss tendencies continue to damage his potential of developing into an everyday major-league outfielder. The 20-20 upside is tantalizing, but we've seen other players with similar profiles fail to realize it before.

He recently went four straight games without striking out -- the first time he's done that all season. Before that stretch, Lowe had struck out at least once in 26 of 27 games since his demotion to Triple-A. In June as a whole, Lowe has hit .300/.429/.475 with a homer, three steals and a 9:8 K:BB, so it certainly looks like he's turning the corner with his approach at the plate after struggling mightily to begin the year.

Lowe hit .284/.337/.531 but struck out 35 times across 81 at-bats with Triple-A Durham in May.

Lowe struck out at a 38 percent clip in his first taste of the big leagues, and that mark has remained consistent with Durham. He's still managing to produce -- he has five home runs and two stolen bases across 99 plate appearances -- but his inability to make consistent contact could prevent him from getting another immediate chance with the Rays.

Lowe has homered in each of his last two games and three times overall for Triple-A Durham, but he's picked up only one other hit in seven games since being demoted while striking out 17 times in 28 plate appearances. He's hitting .188/.257/.344 for Durham.

Lowe was already whiffing way too much in the majors before his demotion, but this is a whole new level -- a 60.7 percent strikeout rate. The issue seems more like a problem with his approach or confidence than anything physical, so Lowe could be just an adjustment way from being the hitter who posted a .291/.381/.535 line for Durham last year. He's always going to strike out a lot, but Lowe is a much better hitter than he's shown this year. Fortunately, the Rays have the luxury of letting him work through it at Triple-A for as long as he needs.

While Lowe's skillset is very exciting for fantasy, his situation is not. The Rays already have Austin Meadows, Randy Arozarena, Kevin Kiermaier, Manuel Margot and Jordan Luplow as healthy outfield options while Nelson Cruz clogs the designated hitter spot. Passan's note that Lowe might not be up for long is not a guarantee, but it's hard to see how he would play more than a few times per week as things stand.

Lowe hit a walkoff two-run homer for Triple-A Durham on Thursday and is now batting .275/.353/.552 with 20 homers and 19 steals across 83 games this season.

That marked his third straight game with a homer, and he's actually gone four consecutive games without a strikeout -- a positive sign, as Lowe has whiffed fairly prolifically throughout his career in the minors. He may never hit for great average, but Lowe's homers and steals should make him a valuable fantasy asset once he finds his way to the majors -- whenever that may be.

Lowe is hitting .290/.362/.518 with nine homers, 12 steals, 33 RBI and 32 runs for Triple-A Durham.

It's hard to find many flaws in what Lowe's done this season, as the 23-year-old has improved both his power production and his base-stealing efficiency -- he hasn't been caught a single time. Though he may get lost a bit among all the Rays' big-name prospects, Lowe has an exciting skill set for fantasy purposes. Even better, with only the light-hitting Kevin Kiermaier standing in his way, it seems like only a matter of time before Lowe is patrolling center field in Tampa.

The 2016 first-round pick will likely open the 2021 campaign at Triple-A Durham after posting a .783 OPS while stealing 30 bases in 121 games with Double-A Montgomery in his last minor-league season in 2019.
