Tosses quality start in loss
Urena did not factor into the decision, allowing four hits and three walks over six scoreless innings in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Padres. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Urena finished the season on a high note, working his way through the Padres lineup without difficulty. The right-hander finished his season with a 6.45 ERA and 1.61 WHIP across 44.2 innings with 29 strikeouts. Urena is expected to look for a new contract in free agency this winter.

Takes another loss
Urena (0-7) took the loss Tuesday, allowing seven runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks over four innings against the Diamondbacks. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Urena struggled to get through the Diamondbacks order Tuesday, allowing three runs across his first three innings of work before leaving the bases loaded in the fifth with no outs. Through nine starts, Urena has taken seven losses, and he's surrendered four or more earned runs in two of his last three appearances. Urena is lined up to make one more start this week, closing out the 2023 regular season for the White Sox at home against the Padres on Sunday.
Sep 19, 2023
Sharp in no-decision
Urena did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing one run on four hits over six innings against the Nationals. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
While he wasn't able to pick up the win Tuesday, it was an impressive performance from Urena, who held the Nationals scoreless through his first five innings. In three starts (16.1 innings) with Chicago, Urena's surrendered eight runs on 15 hits while tallying 15 strikeouts. Overall, the veteran right-hander is 0-6 with a 7.27 ERA across 34.2 innings between the White Sox and Rockies this season. Urena is currently scheduled for a home matchup with the Diamondbacks in his next outing.
Sep 15, 2023
Falls to 0-6
Urena (0-6) took the loss against Minnesota on Thursday, allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out eight batters over 6.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Urena gave up a pair of solo shots in the fourth inning, but those were the only runs he gave up through six frames. Things fell apart for him in the seventh, however, as he allowed four straight one-out hits that led to four runs, with Kyle Farmer's two-run homer being the biggest blow and marking the end of his outing. Urena has been tagged with the loss in all but one of his seven appearances this season, compiling an ugly 8.48 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 20:16 K:BB over 28.2 frames.
Sep 14, 2023
Picks up another start
Urena is scheduled to start Thursday's game against the Twins at Guaranteed Rate Field.
ANALYSIS
He'll be making his second straight turn though the rotation after he struck out three and allowed one run on four hits and two walks across four innings while taking a loss against the Tigers in his White Sox debut last week. Between stops with the White Sox and Rockies this season, Urena owns an 8.46 ERA, 2.10 WHIP and 12:16 K:BB in 22.1 innings, so he'll be difficult to rely on even in the deepest of fantasy leagues.
Sep 10, 2023
Takes loss in White Sox debut
Urena (0-5) took the loss Saturday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over four innings against the Tigers. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
In his first big-league action since April 23, Urena fired 75 pitches and limited the damage to one run, which came on an infield single in the second inning. However, the White Sox lineup failed to provide adequate run support and the righty was tagged with his fifth loss of the year. The 31-year-old compiled a 9.82 ERA, 2.24 WHIP and 6.9 BB/9 across 18.1 innings in five April starts with the Rockies and posted a 5.60 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 3.4 BB/9 across 88.1 minor-league innings this year before getting promoted by Chicago. His season-long ERA now sits at 8.46, marking the seventh time in nine MLB seasons that Urena has posted an ERA north of 5.00 in his career. If he remains in the rotation, he is likely to make his next start at home against the Twins.
Sep 9, 2023
Contract selected ahead of start
Urena's contract was selected as expected Saturday ahead of his scheduled start against the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Urena opened the year in the Rockies' rotation but didn't last a month before being designated for assignment, having posted a 9.82 ERA and 9:14 K:BB across first starts. He spent most of the middle part of the season pitching for Triple-A Rochester in the Nationals system, where he struggled to a 6.31 ERA. He could remain in Chicago's rotation the rest of the year with Michael Kopech moving to the bullpen, but he's unlikely to be a usable option in many fantasy leagues.
Sep 8, 2023
Starting Saturday
The White Sox will select Urena from Triple-A Charlotte to start Saturday's game against Detroit, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
If Urena is able to put up a good performance against the Tigers, it's possible he remains in Chicago's rotation down the stretch with Michael Kopech now in the bullpen. Urena has put up a 3.38 ERA and 1.37 WHIP through 21.1 innings in Triple-A since signing with the White Sox in August, but a 5.77 ERA in the majors since 2022 should keep fantasy managers cautious of the 31-year-old.
Aug 8, 2023
Signs with ChiSox
Urena signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Urena was released by the Nationals on Thursday after putting up a 6.31 ERA and 1.58 WHIP through 67 innings with their Triple-A affiliate. He'll now get another chance in the minors with the White Sox, but he doesn't project to make it back to the big leagues based on his current production.
Aug 5, 2023
Released by Nationals
The Nationals released Urena on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
He signed a minor-league deal with the Nationals in May and registered a 6.31 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 15 starts for Triple-A Rochester. Urena was released by the Rockies earlier this year after walking more batters (14) than he struck out (nine) in five big-league starts across 18.1 innings.
May 3, 2023
Signs minor-league deal
Urena signed a minor-league contract with the Nationals on Wednesday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena was released by the Rockies last week after posting a 9.82 ERA and 2.24 WHIP across 18.1 innings this season. He'll report to Triple-A Rochester, where he'll join the rotation and wait for a call from the major-league club. Given the state of the rebuilding Nationals' roster, he'll probably get one eventually.
Apr 28, 2023
Released by Rockies
Urena was released by the Rockies on Thursday, per the MLB transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Urena was designated for assignment Tuesday and unsurprisingly went unclaimed on waivers. He has posted a 9.82 ERA and 2.24 WHIP across 18.1 innings this season.
Apr 25, 2023
DFA'd by Colorado
Urena was designated for assignment by the Rockies on Tuesday, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 31-year-old re-signed with the Rockies in November on a one-year, $3 million deal, but the club cut its losses after he went 0-4 with a 9.82 ERA, 2.24 WHIP and 9:14 K:BB in five starts to begin the season. Urena is likely to pass through waivers unclaimed given the remaining money on his contract.
Apr 23, 2023
Can't get through fourth Sunday
Urena (0-4) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on three hits and four walks over 3.2 innings during a 9-4 loss to the Phillies. He didn't record a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Urena allowed a leadoff homer to Trea Turner in the bottom the first, and it didn't get much better for the right-hander, who was pulled in the fourth with two outs after surrendering the lead. He's given up at least three runs in all five of his starts this season and currently sports a 9.82 ERA over 18.1 innings.
Apr 19, 2023
Takes third loss
Urena (0-3) allowed five earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two to take the loss Tuesday against the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Urena pitched effectively through three innings by limiting the Pirates to one run. However, he allowed a pair of doubles and a home run to the first three batters he faced in the fourth frame, ruining his performance. Urena has failed to work at least five innings in three of his four starts this season and has given up multiple homers in each of his last three outings. The result is a disastrous 9.82 ERA and 2.32 WHIP across 14.2 frames.
Apr 12, 2023
Strikes out six in five innings
Urena did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk over five innings during a 7-4 loss to the Cardinals. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
After failing to get through the third in each of his first two outings, Urena's performance Wednesday was certainly a step in the right direction. However, it was far from perfect, and he was in line for the loss until the Rockies tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh. All three of Urena's runs came via homers, and he's now given up five home runs over his first 10 innings this season.
Apr 7, 2023
Struggles again in loss
Urena took the loss Friday, allowing six runs -- four earned -- on seven hits and three walks with no strikeouts over 2.2 innings against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Urena gave up back-to-back homers to begin the start to Alex Call and Jeimer Candelario, and two more runs in the second and the third. He was hurt by his defense, but it's another rough outing for the right-hander that sees him fall to 0-2 with a 14.40 ERA. It goes without saying but Urena is not a recommend streaming option for his next scheduled start next week against the Cardinals.
Apr 1, 2023
Pulled in third in loss
Urena (0-1) took the loss Saturday, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks over 2.2 innings against the Padres. He struck out zero.
ANALYSIS
Urena allowed a two-run homer in the first to Xander Bogaerts, and he gave up another two runs on a two-run double my Matt Carpenter. The right-hander threw 40-of-71 pitches for strikes, and did not fool the San Diego hitters throughout the outing. Urena is a tough sell for fantasy, but is scheduled to face a beatable Washington lineup Friday.
Nov 11, 2022
Re-signs with Colorado
Urena agreed to a one-year contract with the Rockies on Friday, which includes a club option for 2024, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander began 2022 in a relief role for the Brewers but was let go in May and joined the Rockies. He worked as a starter in Colorado and had a 5.14 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 60:38 K:BB across 89.1 innings.
Oct 4, 2022
Pitches well in no-decision
Urena did not factor in the decision against the Dodgers on Monday, allowing one run on five hits and no walks while striking out four batters over six innings.
ANALYSIS
The Dodgers have wrapped up MLB's best regular-season record, but that didn't intimidate Urena as he logged one of his best starts of the campaign. The right-hander gave up only one run (on a Trayce Thompson solo homer) and didn't walk any batters for just the second time this season. It was the culmination of a nice late-season turnaround for Urena, who had a 6.13 ERA after a poor start Sept. 4 but has since lowered that to 5.01 by giving up just seven earned runs over 28 innings across his subsequent five starts.
Sep 29, 2022
Takes loss Wednesday
Urena (3-8) was tagged with the loss against San Francisco on Wednesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks while striking out six batters over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Urena tied his season-high mark with six strikeouts in the contest, but he also issued a season-high four walks. He needed 96 pitches to get through five frames and ended up with his second loss to the Giants over the past week. Urena made five starts in September, posting a 3.95 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over 27.1 innings while registering an 0-3 record.
Sep 22, 2022
Punches out six in loss
Urena (3-7) allowed two earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out six across 5.2 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The only damage against Urena came on a two-run home run by Mike Yastrzemski in the sixth inning. Otherwise, Urena generated an impressive 15 swinging strikes on a total of 94 pitches and also induced six groundball outs. He's pitched well across his last three starts, maintaining a 2.12 ERA across 17 frames. However, for the season, Urena still owns a 5.34 ERA with a 53:39 K:BB in 86 innings.
Sep 18, 2022
Quality start on road
Urena did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one run on seven hits and two walks over six innings against the Cubs. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Urena allowed an RBI single from P.J. Higgins with two outs in the fifth inning for the first run of the game. The righty has been awful in his last 10 starts with a 7.03 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over 48.2 innings; however, the 31-year-old has allowed only one run in back-to-back outings and has gone five straight without surrendering a home run.
Sep 11, 2022
Effective in no-decision
Urena pitched 5.1 innings against Arizona on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out five batters. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Urena allowed just a fourth-inning run and didn't give up any extra-base hits, but Colorado's offense wasn't able to get on the board until after he departed in the sixth frame. It was nonetheless a nice bounce-back performance for the right-hander after he was punished for seven runs (six earned) over 5.1 frames in his previous start. Urena's home park and vulnerability to blow-ups make him difficult to roster in fantasy, though he's pitched at least five innings while giving up three or fewer runs in four of his past seven outings.
Sep 4, 2022
Sloppy in sixth loss
Urena (3-6) allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and a walk while striking out just one over 5.1 innings, taking the loss in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader versus the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Urena allowed the Reds to piece together a five-run rally in the fourth inning, though a Ryan McMahon throwing error didn't help the cause. In the sixth, the Reds started building again before manager Bud Black went to the bullpen. Urena was responsible for two of the Reds' five runs in the sixth. This was the fifth time in his last nine outings that the 30-year-old righty has allowed at least four earned runs. He has a 6.13 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 38:34 K:BB through 69 innings across 16 outings (12 starts) between the Rockies and the Brewers this year. Urena is projected for a home start versus Arizona next weekend.
Aug 31, 2022
Five innings in win
Urena (3-5) earned the win Tuesday, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over five innings against the Braves. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Despite failing to record a clean inning, Urena was able to hold Atlanta to two runs and earn his third win of the season. More impressive was that the outing came at home, where he sported a 7.36 ERA entering Tuesday. The surprise performance is unlikely to be repeatable as Urena carries an ugly 5.18 xFIP and 5.54 xERA on the season, but he will look to do just that in his next scheduled start against Cincinnati this weekend.
Aug 24, 2022
Serves up nine earned runs
Urena (2-5) allowed nine earned runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out one across 1.1 innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Urena allowed two earned runs in the first inning, but really imploded in the second frame when he allowed eight of the nine batters he faced to reach base. Entering Wednesday's start, Urena had turned in quality starts in two of his last three outings -- though he had only a 10:7 K:BB across 18.2 frames in that span. Urena now has a 5.98 ERA with a 31:31 K:BB in 58.2 innings for the season.
Aug 20, 2022
Earns second win
Urena (2-4) gave up three earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three over 6.2 innings to earn the win in a 7-4 victory over the Giants on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Urena tied his longest appearance of the season in a quality start which earned him his second win. Urena has not issued less than two walks in any start since being acquired by the Rockies at the beginning of July, and he does not make up for his control problems with strikeout stuff. The 30-year-old sinker baller came into the game with a terrible walk rate of 4.6 BB/9 to go along with a 4.8 K/9. He is expected to make his next start at Texas where he will look for his third win of the campaign.
Aug 13, 2022
Serves up three homers in loss
Urena (1-4) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five across six innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Urena allowed multiple home runs for the second straight start. Emmanuel Rivera tagged him for a pair of solo shots while Josh Rojas added a two-run blast to account for the four runs on his line. Urena hasn't shown much over his last five outings, yielding 25 runs (21 earned) across 24.1 innings. He has a 4.80 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 27:26 K:BB through 50.2 innings in 12 outings (eight starts) between the Rockies and the Brewers this year. Urena is tentatively projected for a home start versus the Giants next week.
Aug 7, 2022
Turns in quality start
Urena allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out two across six innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Urena completed six frames for the first time in four starts. All three runs against him came via the home run -- he gave up a two-run blast to Christian Walker in the first inning and a solo shot to Emmanuel Rivera in the sixth. Urena has given up four homers in 37 innings across seven outings with the Rockies, with three of those homers coming in road games. He's pitched to a 4.63 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 22:24 K:BB across 44.2 innings between the Rockies and the Brewers this year. The right-hander is lined up for another start versus the Diamondbacks next weekend, with that outing in Colorado's Coors Field.
Aug 3, 2022
No-decision Tuesday against Friars
Urena didn't factor into the decision in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Padres, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks over four innings as the Rockies fell 3-2. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander continues to struggle with his control. Urena has issued multiple free passes in all six of his starts for Colorado since joining the club at the beginning of July, leading to a rough 4.94 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 17:16 K:BB through 31 innings. The 30-year-old isn't exactly solidifying his spot in the rotation, but the Rockies also don't seem to have any better options.
Jul 29, 2022
Chased early Thursday
Urena (1-3) allowed 10 runs (seven earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out two over three-plus innings, taking the loss Thursday versus the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
While three errors from the Rockies' defense, including one error by Urena, didn't help his cause, the right-hander proved no match for the Dodgers' powerful offense. He gave up multiple runs in each of the first two innings and then failed to record an out and put four runners aboard in the fourth before Austin Gomber was brought in to relieve him. Urena's ERA skyrocketed to 4.67 with a 1.62 WHIP and 19:18 K:BB across 34.2 innings in nine appearances (five starts) between the Rockies and Brewers this season. His last two starts have been his worst of the season, but the Rockies will likely need to keep him in the rotation with eight games in seven days next week. He's expected to make a road start in San Diego.
Jul 24, 2022
Takes loss Saturday
Urena (1-2) was tagged for the loss against Milwaukee on Saturday, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out five batters over 5.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Urena allowed only one extra-base hit in the outing, but it was a big three-run home run off the bat of Hunter Renfroe in the fourth inning. Prior to that hit, he had held the Brewers scoreless and appeared on his way to another successful appearance. Urena came into the contest having notched three straight quality starts during which he'd given up just three runs over 18.2 frames. The right-hander still has a solid 3.13 ERA through 31.2 innings on the campaign.
Jul 17, 2022
Throws six scoreless for first win
Urena (1-1) gave up five hits and two walks while striking out four over six scoreless innings to earn the win in a 2-0 victory over the Pirates on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Urena took advantage of the lowly Pirates offense, going six strong for his first win of the season. The veteran right-hander has been solid in his three starts since being recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on July 7. He has only given up three earned runs in 18.2 innings as a starter. Despite playing well in the opportunities he has been given this season, it is unclear if he will hang in the rotation since Antonio Senzatela (shoulder) is expected to return after the All-Star break.
Jul 12, 2022
Holds his own in loss
Urena (0-1) allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts in six innings, taking the loss Monday versus the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Urena was able to limit the damage to a Luke Voit sacrifice fly in the first inning and a Jake Cronenworth solo home run in the third. Through two starts, Urena has allowed three runs, 12 hits and six walks in 12.2 innings -- that's better than the five runs (four earned) he allowed 7.2 innings in four relief outings with the Brewers early in the year. The right-hander has a 2.66 ERA, but an ugly 1.48 WHIP and 8:11 K:BB in 20.1 innings shouldn't give fantasy managers much confidence. He's still expected to make a home start versus the Pirates this weekend, but Urena may not stick in the rotation once Antonio Senzatela (shoulder) returns.
Jul 10, 2022
Draws another start
Urena is scheduled to start Monday's game against the Padres in Colorado.
ANALYSIS
He'll get a second turn through the rotation after he passed his first test with the Rockies following his promotion from Triple-A Albuquerque last week. In a tough road start in Los Angeles, Urena took a no-decision while limiting the Dodgers to one run on five hits and three walks while striking out two in 6.2 innings. Pitching in altitude at hitter-friendly Coors Field will present an even stiffer test for Urena, who looks like a high-risk fantasy option to close out the first half even though he'll line up for two starts. His second start of the week would also come at home Saturday in Pittsburgh, so he has the potential to inflict major damage on fantasy managers' ratios.
Jul 7, 2022
Impresses in first start of season
Urena pitched 6.2 innings against the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing one run on five hits and three walks while striking out two. He didn't factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Urena was promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque to make the start after appearing in four games as a reliever with the Brewers earlier in the campaign. The veteran hurler held his own against one of the game's top offenses, keeping the Dodgers scoreless through six frames before giving up his first run in the seventh. Urena finished with an efficient 89 pitches over 6.2 frames and didn't allow any extra-base hits, but he had to settle for a no-decision due to a quiet Colorado offense. After Wednesday's strong outing, it seems likely that he'll get another start with Antonio Senzatela (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list.
Jul 6, 2022
Promoted for Wednesday's start
Urena had his contract selected by the Rockies and will start Wednesday against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Urena joined Colorado on a minor-league deal in mid-May and will make his first start of the season in Los Angeles. The 30-year-old appeared in four games as a reliever for the Brewers earlier in the year and allowed three earned runs with a 3:5 K:BB over 7.2 innings. Urena covered six innings during his last start with Triple-A Albuquerque.
Jul 6, 2022
Confirmed to start Wednesday
The Rockies will call Urena up from Triple-A Albuquerque to start Wednesday's game against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
ANALYSIS
Colorado is expected to make the transaction official a few hours prior to the game's 10:10 p.m. ET start time. Urena will be entering the Colorado rotation as a replacement for Antonio Senzatela (shoulder), who was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday. Since he signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies in mid-May, Urena turned in a 7.29 ERA and 2.14 WHIP across 21 innings in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.
Jul 4, 2022
In line for Wednesday start
Urena is expected to make a spot start Wednesday against the Dodgers, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena spent the first month of the 2022 season with the Brewers, posting a 3.52 ERA and 1.57 WHIP with a 5:3 K:BB across 7.2 frames in a relief role before being designated for assignment in early May. If the right-hander is confirmed as Wednesday's starter, it would mark his first big-league action since April 26. Urena has worked five and six innings in his last two minor-league outings, respectively, so he could potentially work more than a few frames if things go well.
May 13, 2022
Signs minor-league contract
Urena signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Friday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena was designated for assignment by Milwaukee in early May, and he elected free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Nashville. However, he'll settle for a minor-league deal with Colorado. The right-hander will work out at the Rockies' extended spring training facility in Arizona before presumably reporting to Triple-A Albuquerque.
May 9, 2022
Elects free agency
Urena elected free agency Monday instead of accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Nashville.
ANALYSIS
Urena lost his roster spot when rosters shrank to 26 players last week, as his 3.52 ERA in 7.2 innings of relief to start the season came with a very poor 3:5 K:BB. He went unclaimed on waivers and will probably have to settle for a minor-league deal considering that he owns a 5.45 ERA since the start of the 2019 season.
May 2, 2022
Moves off 40-man roster
The Brewers designated Urena for assignment Monday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
He was moved off the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster to clear room for infielder Luis Urias (quadriceps), who was activated from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. After earning a spot on the Brewers' Opening Day roster as a long reliever, Urena floundered over his four appearances out of the bullpen, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and five walks while striking out three over 7.2 innings.
Apr 27, 2022
Another extended relief appearance
Urena gave up three runs -- one earned -- over 2.1 innings of relief in Tuesday's victory over the Pirates. He allowed four hits, walked a batter and struck out none.
ANALYSIS
Urena had a shot to record a three-inning save Tuesday, but the Pirates put the tying run on deck in the ninth inning, and Josh Hader was summoned to close the door. Urena has tossed an inning-plus in three of his four appearances and owns a respectable 3.52 ERA, but he also has posted a 3:5 K:BB. Expect him to continue working in middle-to-long relief for the Brewers.
Mar 30, 2022
Contract selected by Brewers
Urena's contract was selected by the Brewers on Wednesday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena signed a minor-league deal with Milwaukee on Tuesday and will be added to the 40-man roster a day later. He made 26 appearances (18 starts) for the Tigers last year and posted a 5.81 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in 100.2 innings. Even if the right-hander begins the season at Triple-A Nashville, he'll be a candidate to fill in as a major-league starter if needed.
Mar 29, 2022
Inks MiLB deal with Brewers
Urena signed a minor-league contract with the Brewers on Tuesday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena spent last season in Detroit and appeared in 26 games (18 starts) with a 5.81 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 67:42 K:BB over 100.2 innings. The right-hander should report to big-league camp for the final stages of spring training, but he should open the season at Triple-A Nashville since the Brewers have an established rotation.
Sep 6, 2021
Earns win in relief
Urena (3-8) earned the win Sunday against Cincinnati after tossing 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing five hits and striking out one.
ANALYSIS
Urena registered his third win of the season and while he piggybacked Casey Mize's start effectively, this wasn't a quiet outing as the boxscore suggested -- he routinely allowed baserunners and was far from dominant. Either way, this was a step in the right direction for Urena, who has been pitching poorly during most of the year. He has tossed three scoreless outings over his last four appearances, but he still owns a below-average 5.95 ERA across 87.2 innings through 20 appearances (18 starts).
Sep 3, 2021
Works out of bullpen
Urena made an appearance out of the bullpen in Wednesday's 8-6 win over the Athletics, tossing two innings while giving up three runs on six hits.
ANALYSIS
After being activated from the injured list last weekend, Urena served as a starter for Detroit in his first outing since July 17, pitching for three innings before giving way to the bullpen. The Tigers haven't formally defined Urena's role for the rest of the season, but he looks like he'll work in relief for the time being while Tyler Alexander and Matt Manning hold down back-end spots in Detroit's six-man rotation.

Sharp over three innings Saturday
Urena didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays, allowing three hits over three scoreless innings. He struck out two without walking a batter.
ANALYSIS
While the right-hander couldn't give the Tigers any length after being activated from the IL, Urena did stymie the Jays over his 49 pitches (32 strikes). Detroit has used piggyback and tandem arrangements in the past, so it's possible they keep pairing up Urena with someone like Tyler Alexander down the stretch rather than stretching him out, but in either scenario it's tough to get excited about his fantasy potential. Urena will take a 5.96 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 54:37 K:BB through 83 innings into his next outing.
Aug 28, 2021
Officially activated
The Tigers reinstated Urena (groin) from the 10-day injured list Saturday.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Urena is activated to start Saturday's game against the Blue Jays. He's only going to pitch a few innings, as he's been out since mid-July and isn't built up for long outings. It's not entirely clear what Urena's role will be for the remainder of the season, as he can't currently provide length as a starter but it's been a couple years since he pitched out of the bullpen.
Aug 27, 2021
Returning for short start
Urena (groin) will return to start Saturday's game against the Blue Jays but won't throw more than two or three innings, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
A groin issue has kept Urena sidelined since mid-July. He's been a starter all season but wasn't pitching deep into games prior to the injury, throwing no more than 4.2 innings in any of his last six starts. That may have been mostly due to performance rather than workload management, however, as he struggled to an 11.76 ERA over that stretch. Tyler Alexander is expected to follow him out of the bullpen Saturday.
Aug 22, 2021
Role undetermined upon return
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Sunday that a decision hasn't been made whether Urena (groin) will serve as a starter or reliever upon returning from the 10-day injured list, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena made his second rehab start at Triple-A Toledo on Saturday, striking out two over two scoreless frames. He made the appearance on three days' rest rather than the standard four between starts, which would seemingly hint that the Tigers are leaning toward deploying him as a multi-inning arm out of the bullpen once he's activated. The need for the Tigers to build Urena back up for starting duty is lessened by the fact that he's on a similar recovery timeline as Matthew Boyd (triceps), whose impending return from the IL would allow Detroit to keep its six-man rotation intact.
Aug 17, 2021
Starts rehab assignment
Urena (groin) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday and threw 13 pitches in a scoreless inning, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
It's not the type of length you'd expect from a starter to begin a rehab assignment, so it's worth keeping an eye on his workload in subsequent outings. Urena landed on the shelf with groin tightness in mid-July, and a shift to the bullpen would allow for a shorter rehab stint and quicker return to the majors since he wouldn't need to build up to a starter's workload. For now it's unclear how the Tigers plan to utilize the right-hander once he's healthy.
Aug 17, 2021
Could return in September
The Tigers are targeting early September for Urena's (groin) return from the 10-day injured list, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena has been on the shelf since July 17 with right groin tightness and hasn't initiated a rehab assignment, though the Tigers apparently expect him to do so within the next few days. If that's the case, Urena would still likely need two or three outings in the minors to get stretched out for starting duty. The 29-year-old posted a 6.19 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 5.8 K/9 in 17 starts prior to landing on the IL and won't hold much appeal outside of AL-only formats once he eventually returns.
Aug 12, 2021
Nearing rehab assignment
Urena (groin) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena has been on the injured list since July 17 due to right groin tightness, and he'll return to game action exactly one month after his sustained the injury. The right-hander resumed mound work last week, and his rehab assignment will allow him to build up his pitch count. However, the Tigers haven't yet indicated when Urena will be cleared to rejoin the major-league club.
Jul 27, 2021
Hasn't progressed to mound work
Urena (groin) has been throwing flat-ground sessions but hasn't gotten on the mound yet, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena went down July 17 with right groin tightness and appears at least a couple weeks from returning. After he eventually begins throwing bullpens from the mound, the righty will still have to face hitters and will likely require a minor-league rehab assignment as well. In 17 starts this season, Urena has pitched 80 innings, posting a 6.19 ERA and 1.65 WHIP.
Jul 17, 2021
Heads to IL
Urena (groin) was placed on the 10-day injured list following Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Twins, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Groin tightness shortened Urena's start Saturday and will now sideline him for an indefinite period of time. Details about the righty's injury and a timeframe for his return should become clear in the coming days.
Jul 17, 2021
Exits with groin tightness
Urena was removed from Saturday's start against the Twins after three innings with right groin tightness, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The righty threw 42 pitches, striking out a pair and allowing two hits in three scoreless frames. Daniel Norris entered in the fourth inning with Detroit leading 1-0. Additional details about Urena's condition should become available during or following the Saturday afternoon contest.
Jul 16, 2021
Friday's doubleheader postoned
Urena won't start Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Twins since it was postponed due to inclement weather, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena was poised to start the first game out of the All-Star break for Detroit, but the twin bill was called off due to rain. One of the contests will be made up via a doubleheader Saturday, while the other will be played Aug. 30. The Tigers haven't announced their updated pitching plans, but Urena should still pitch at some point against Minnesota this weekend.
Jul 6, 2021
Ineffective again in no-decision
Urena allowed five runs on six hits across 4.2 innings and did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Rangers. He walked four and struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Though he avoided losing his ninth game of the season, Urena was once again ineffective for the Tigers. In his last six starts, the righty is 0-4 and has allowed a whopping 30 earned runs in just 22.2 innings. As a result, Urena's ERA has climbed to 6.43, and he simply can't be trusted by fantasy managers right now. He lines up to face the Twins on Sunday in his next scheduled start and will look to begin turning things around.
Jun 30, 2021
Taken deep four times Wednesday
Urena allowed four runs on five hits across 3.1 innings and did not factor into the decision Wednesday in Game 1 against Cleveland. He walked one and struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Urena had his start bumped back from Tuesday after that game was rained out, and the righty didn't benefit from the extra rest. He allowed four solo home runs in the first half of the doubleheader and has now given up 11 total long balls this season in 72.1 innings. The struggles keeping the ball in the park have led to a 6.22 ERA for Urena, which isn't a huge surprise considering he posted an ERA above 5.00 each of the last two years. He lines up to start again Monday against Texas, and fantasy managers should tread lightly given the 29-year-old's current form.
Jun 29, 2021
Tuesday's start postponed
Urena won't pitch as scheduled Tuesday against Cleveland since the game was postponed due to inclement weather.
ANALYSIS
The contest will be made up as part of a doubleheader Wednesday. Urena figures to take the mound during one of those games, with Wednesday's originally scheduled starter Wily Peralta likely to pitch the other contest.
Jun 24, 2021
Hit hard in loss
Urena (2-8) was charged with the loss Thursday against the Astros after surrendering six runs (four earned) on eight hits and a pair of walks while striking out one across 3.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
It started off with a five-pitch first inning, but it went downhill from there. While the 29-year-old managed to keep the ball in the park, he couldn't find a way to silence Houston's bats as he got hammered for the third straight game. Urena has now given up 21 runs (18 earned) over his past three starts (9.2 innings). The veteran righty will attempt to right the ship in his next appearance, which is tentatively scheduled on the road against Cleveland on Tuesday.
Jun 19, 2021
Overwhelmed by Angels on Friday
Urena (2-7) took the loss against the Angels on Friday, allowing seven runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four over 4.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander fared well enough through four frames, giving up a pair of runs but allowing Detroit to stay within striking range. Things fell apart for Urena in the fifth inning, however, as he surrendered three home runs along with a single and a walk to depart with a seven-run deficit. The veteran has now given up 15 runs (14 earned) over his past two starts covering six innings, pushing his season ERA up to 5.79. He'll attempt to turn things around in his next appearance, which is tentatively scheduled to come at home against the Astros on Thursday.
Jun 12, 2021
Worst start of season
Urena (2-6) allowed eight runs (seven earned) on five hits and three walks with one strikeout in 1.2 innings, taking the loss versus the White Sox on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Urena's shortest start of the year was quite the disaster, as he also gave up a season-high seven earned runs. The right-hander has struggled to a 5.16 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 37:27 K:BB across 61 innings this season. He projects to make his next start on the road versus the Angels next week.
Jun 6, 2021
Yields three runs in loss
Urena (2-5) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks over five innings Sunday, striking out one and taking a loss against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
All the damage against Urena came during a three-run second inning on RBI singles by Andrew Vaughn and Tim Anderson. It was his first start since May 26 after a short stint on the injured list with a forearm issue. The 6-foot-2 saw his ERA jump to 4.25 through 59.1 innings. Urena is lined up for a rematch with the White Sox at home next weekend.
Jun 6, 2021
Activated ahead of start
The Tigers reinstated Urena (forearm) from the 10-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Sunday against the White Sox, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Detroit placed reliever Michael Fulmer (shoulder) on the IL to make room on the active roster for Urena, who spent the minimum amount of time on the shelf with a minor right forearm strain. The Tigers could look to limit Urena's workload slightly more than usual as he returns from the injury, but due to the brevity of his absence, he likely won't need much time to get fully stretched out. Through his first 10 starts of 2021, Urena has posted a 4.14 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 35:22 K:BB in 54.1 innings.
Jun 4, 2021
Likely to return Sunday
Urena (forearm) is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list to start Sunday against the White Sox, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena hit the 10-day injured list May 29, with the move being retroactive to May 27, making him eligible to be activated Sunday. Initial reports were that Urena would likely only miss one turn through the rotation, and that appears likely to be the case. The right-hander has posted a 4.14 ERA to go along with a 35:22 K:BB through 54.1 innings this season.
May 29, 2021
Placed on injured list
Urena was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right forearm strain Saturday, retroactive to May 27.
ANALYSIS
Manager A.J. Hinch said Friday that Urena could miss his next start, and the right-hander will officially miss at least one turn through the rotation. The move is backdated to Thursday, so he'll be eligible to return as early as June 6. The Tigers haven't announced who will start in his place early next week, but Michael Fulmer could be a candidate for a spot start. Infielder Zack Short was recalled from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move.
May 28, 2021
Could miss next start
Urena (forearm) could miss his next scheduled start, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena's next turn through the rotation tentatively lines up for Monday, but he was removed from Wednesday's start against Cleveland due to right forearm cramping. Manager AJ Hinch said Friday that Urena is feeling better and wants to pitch Monday, but he's leaning toward using another pitcher to start against the Brewers. However, Hinch also said Friday that Urena and the Tigers will come to a collective agreement in the next 24 hours.
May 26, 2021
Exits with forearm cramping
Urena was removed from Wednesday's game against Cleveland with right forearm cramping.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old allowed three hits with three walks and two strikeouts through 5.2 scoreless innings before exiting during an at-bat. It doesn't appear to be a serious issue, though Urena's availability for his next turn through the rotation is up in the air.
May 22, 2021
Yields five runs in win
Urena (2-4) allowed five runs on 10 hits over six innings Friday, striking out one and earning the win over the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Urena had allowed just two runs through five innings before an ugly sixth inning put a dent in his outing. He gave up an RBI single to Ryan O'Hearn before Michael Taylor knocked a two-run homer. Miguel Cabrera's grand slam gave Detroit the lead the next half inning, so Urena picked up his second win of the year and first since April 27. Over his last three outings, the 29-year-old has given up 11 runs while striking out just five batters in 13 innings. Urena is expected to face Cleveland at home next week.
May 21, 2021
Slated to start Friday
Urena (lower leg) is listed as the Tigers' starting pitcher for Friday's game against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Urena won't end up missing a turn through the rotation after he was struck in the lower leg by a line drive during his last start May 15. Before exiting, Urena endured one of his worst outings of the season, as he gave up four runs on five hits and a walk over 2.2 innings in a no-decision against the Cubs. On the season, the right-hander owns a 4.22 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 42.2 frames.
May 16, 2021
Not expected to miss start
Urena (lower leg) is not expected to miss a start, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
It seemed like Urena was fine after he was struck in the leg by a line drive Sunday -- he was seen celebrating with his teammates after the walkoff win -- and manager A.J. Hinch confirmed Sunday that Urena will remain on schedule. Urena has worked around a lot of traffic on the basepaths (1.45 WHP) to a decent ERA (4.22) so far. He lines up to face the Royals in Kansas City in his next start.
May 16, 2021
Appears fine after early exit
Urena is considered day-to-day but appeared fine after being struck by a line drive in the lower leg during Saturday's loss to the Cubs, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.. He didn't factor in the decision after giving up four runs on five hits with one strikeout and one walk over 2.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander was struck by the liner during the second inning and returned for the following frame, but he was chased after giving up a pair of doubles. Urena was seen celebrating with his teammates with no issues after the walkoff win, so he should be okay for his next turn through the rotation.
May 9, 2021
No-decision Saturday
Urena didn't factor into the decision Saturday against the Twins after giving up two runs on nine hits and two walks while fanning three across 4.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Urena dealt with 11 baserunners but limited the damage to just two runs -- and both came on a two-run shot from Josh Donaldson in the top of the fifth. The 29-year-old right-hander has been remarkably consistent this season since he's allowed two or fewer runs in each of his last six outings, and his 1-4 record can be explained by the lack of run support he's received. For what is worth, Urena owns a 3.60 ERA in 2021.
May 2, 2021
Takes tough-luck loss Sunday
Urena (1-4) allowed only two runs across seven innings but took the loss Sunday against the Yankees. He gave up three hits and a walk while striking out seven.
ANALYSIS
Urena pitched well and was one off his season high in strikeouts, but New York starter Corey Kluber was even better, blanking the Tigers across eight innings. Urena has gone exactly seven innings in four straight starts and has allowed a total of just seven earned runs during the stretch, but he only has a 1-2 record to show for it as the Detroit offense has done very little to help the starting pitchers. Urena will look for a little more run support in his next scheduled start Friday against the Twins.
Apr 27, 2021
Earns first win with new team
Urena (1-3) allowed two runs (one earned) across seven innings to pick up the win Tuesday against the White Sox. He gave up seven hits and three walks while striking out two.
ANALYSIS
True to form, Urena didn't rely on overpowering stuff, but he was able to keep a tough Chicago lineup in check and pick up his first win in a Tigers uniform. A lack of strikeouts typically limits his fantasy appeal, but Urena does now have a solid 3.77 ERA through five appearances, and he's allowed exactly two earned runs in each of his past four starts. The righty will look to keep rolling against the Yankees on Sunday.
Apr 23, 2021
Throws seven solid innings
Urena allowed two earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out two across seven innings Thursday against the Pirates. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
It looked like it would be a long outing for Urena, who surrendered two runs in the opening frame. However, he allowed only three baserunners across his next six innings on the mound to turn in his second consecutive seven-inning effort. Urena has maintained a 4.57 ERA and 19:12 K:BB through four starts this season and is projected to draw his next start Tuesday at the White Sox.
Apr 17, 2021
Takes tough-luck loss
Urena (0-3) allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks over seven innings in Friday's loss to Oakland. He struck out eight and took the loss.
ANALYSIS
Urena cruised through three scoreless innings to start the game before coughing up two runs in the fourth. His offense couldn't get much going against Frankie Montas so the 29-year-old was tagged with a loss despite producing his best outing of the season. He now owns a 17:11 K:BB and 5.52 ERA through 14.2 frames. Urena will face the Pirates at home next Thursday.
Apr 11, 2021
Walks five in loss
Urena (0-2) allowed two runs on three hits and five walks while fanning four across 4.2 innings in Sunday's loss against the Indians.
ANALYSIS
Urena struggled in his first start of the season and things didn't change Sunday -- even though he limited the damage to just two runs, the control issues plagued him once again. He now owns a 9:9 BB:K over his first 7.2 innings of the campaign.
Apr 5, 2021
Roughed up in first start
Urena (0-1) took the loss after surrendering six runs (five earned) on four hits and four walks while striking out five over three innings Monday against Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
The Twins were locked in on Urena from the start, putting up one run in the first and five in the second with the help of a Nelson Cruz grand slam. Urena threw first-pitch strikes to just four of the 16 batters he faced and was pulled after hurling 81 pitches (39 strikes). He'll get a chance to redeem himself in his next scheduled start Sunday in Cleveland.
Mar 29, 2021
Allows one run in last spring start
Urena allowed one run across 4.2 innings in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees. He gave up one hit and five walks while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
The five walks are a little concerning, but it was otherwise a good start for Urena, who finishes spring training with a solid 1.93 ERA. The righty will open the season in Detroit's rotation, slotting in somewhere behind Opening Day starter Matthew Boyd.
Mar 26, 2021
Earns rotation spot
Urena has officially won a spot in the Tigers' rotation, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena made just five starts last season and didn't look good, struggling to a 15:13 K:BB and a 5.40 ERA. He owns a 1.93 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP in 9.1 innings so far this spring, though his 2:4 K:BB tells a different story. It's tough to get very excited about him for fantasy purposes, as he owns a career 4.60 ERA and a 15.9 percent strikeout rate.
Mar 24, 2021
Continues strong play
Urena allowed one run across 4.2 innings in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. He gave up five hits and a walk with no strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Urena has made three appearances this spring and has allowed just two earned runs across 9.1 innings. The righty only has two strikeouts, and he's never been a big strikeout guy, so he's unlikely to help fantasy managers there. However, Urena should at least be locked into a rotation spot with the Tigers and able to make plenty of starts.
Mar 6, 2021
Spring debut coming Sunday
Urena (forearm) will start Sunday's spring game against the Blue Jays, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old arrived a couple days late to camp due to travel issues and will see his first game action of spring training Sunday. Urena joined Detroit on a one-year, $3.25 million deal after being non-tendered by Miami in December, and he's a likely bet to open the season in the starting rotation. The right-hander had a 5.40 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 15:13 K:BB over 23.1 innings for the Marlins last season before fracturing his right forearm in the season finale.
Feb 18, 2021
Arrives at camp
Urena (forearm) arrived at camp Thursday but still has to going through intake protocols before joining his teammates, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena was briefly delayed by travel issues but should still have time to build up for the start of the regular season. He's likely to be a member of the Tigers' rotation to open the year, though he'll have to prove his health in camp, as he fractured his forearm in late September.
Feb 17, 2021
Not yet at camp
Urena (forearm) hasn't yet arrived at spring training due to travel issues, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena signed a one-year deal with the Tigers in December, but he'll be unavailable to begin spring training due to his travel issues. It's not yet clear when he could join the team, but he'll likely serve as a starter for Detroit once he's available. The righty made five starts for the Marlins last season, recording a 5.40 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over 23.1 innings.
Dec 23, 2020
Heading to Detroit
Urena (forearm) signed a one-year, $3.25 million contract with the Tigers on Wednesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old was non-tendered by Miami at the start of December shortly after being designated for assignment, but he's found another big-league opportunity in Detroit. Urena started five games in 2020 and had a 5.40 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 15:13 K:BB over 23.1 innings before fracturing his forearm in the last game of the regular season. The right-hander will presumably enter spring training as a member of the Tigers' starting rotation, though he did work out of the bullpen for part of 2019.
Dec 2, 2020
Non-tendered by Miami
Urena (forearm) was non-tendered by the Marlins on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old was designated for assignment Monday and will now be heading to free agency. Urena started five games for Miami in 2020 and had a 5.40 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 15:13 K:BB across 23.1 innings. The right-hander posted a similar ERA and WHIP while splitting time between the starting rotation and bullpen in 2019.
Nov 30, 2020
Designated for assignment
Urena (forearm) was designated for assignment Monday, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He was the team's longest tenured player, and Mish reports the Marlins were originally going to non-tender Urena on Wednesday. Instead, they cast him off the 40-man roster to make room for the newly acquired Adam Cimber. Urena fractured his forearm in late September and is questionable for the start of spring training.
Sep 27, 2020
Out for postseason
Urena fractured his right forearm during Sunday's regular-season finale against the Yankees and will miss the entire postseason, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena was struck by a comebacker in the third inning Sunday, and his injury will force him out until at least spring training. The right-hander finishes the season with a 5.40 ERA and 15:13 K:BB over 23.1 innings.
Sep 27, 2020
Exits Sunday's start
Urena was struck in the right hand by a comebacker and was removed from Sunday's game against the Yankees, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old delivered 2.1 scoreless innings before being forced to exit after being hit on his throwing hand by the liner. The severity of the injury remains unclear, putting Urena's availability for the postseason in jeopardy.
Sep 23, 2020
Remains winless
Urena (0-3) allowed four runs on six hits and two walks over six innings of work Tuesday during Atlanta's 11-1 win over the Marlins. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Urena was plagued by home runs from Marcell Ozuna and Ozzie Albies in the first two innings, but held a potent Braves offense mostly in check. The 29-year-old righty will carry a 6.00 ERA into his next start, which is scheduled for Miami's season finale versus the Yankees.
Sep 17, 2020
Saddled with tough-luck loss
Urena (0-2) took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six over 5.2 innings Thursday against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Urena pitched well through the first five innings before finding trouble, surrendering two runs in the sixth on a single to left field. Unfortunately, he didn't get any run support from the Marlins' offense on the night. Urena has struggled to a 6.00 ERA and 1.53 WHIP with a 10:9 K:BB over 15 innings this season.
Sep 13, 2020
Struggles mightily in second start back
Urena (0-1) allowed six runs on five hits (two home runs) and four walks while striking out two across 4.1 innings Saturday as he handed the loss against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Urena's night couldn't have gotten off to a worse start as he let up a first-inning grand slam to Didi Gregorius for an early 4-0 deficit. The hard-throwing righty would later surrender a solo home run to Bryce Harper in the third and would not make it out of the fifth after running into more trouble while closing in on 100 pitches for the night. Through two starts since being reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list, Urena has a 7.71 ERA and a troublesome 4:7 K:BB across 9.1 innings but should maintain his spot in the rotation with Elieser Hernandez (lat) being ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Sep 7, 2020
Reinstated ahead of start
The Marlins activated Urena from the COVID-19 injured list ahead of his scheduled start Monday against the Braves.
ANALYSIS
Miami cleared room for Urena on the 28-man active roster by optioning infielder Eddy Alvarez to its alternate training site, while outfielder Harold Ramirez (hamstring) was transferred to the 45-day IL to open up space for the right-hander on the 40-man roster. Urena has spent the last three weeks at the Marlins' alternate site in Jupiter building up his arm after he was shut down in late July when he tested positive for COVID-19. With Miami dealing Caleb Smith to Arizona last week and with Elieser Hernandez (lat) recently suffered a season-ending injury, Urena should be locked into a rotation spot the rest of the way.
Sep 6, 2020
Confirmed as Monday's starter
Urena (COVID-19) will return from the injured list and start against Atlanta on Monday, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena tested positive for COVID-19 in late July, but has been working out at the team's alternate site since Aug. 15. He'll fill the opening in the rotation left by Elieser Hernandez after he suffered a season-ending lat injury. It's unclear what kind of pitch count Urena will be on, though he doesn't figure to work deep into starts initially.
Sep 2, 2020
Could join rotation Monday
Urena (COVID-19) could be activated from the injured list to start Monday's game against the Braves, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After testing positive for COVID-19 in late July, Urena was cleared to resume working out at the Marlins' alternate training site Aug. 15. Though the right-hander has seemingly built his arm back up following the shutdown, he's been sitting in limbo at the alternate site since Miami didn't have a spot available for him in the rotation. Urena looks poised to get a start in the near future, however, as the Marlins will have an opening after Elieser Hernandez exited his outing Tuesday against the Blue Jays with right lat soreness. The Marlins haven't decided whether Hernandez will require an IL stint, but manager Don Mattingly already suggested Hernandez won't be ready to go when his next turn comes up Monday.

Resumes activity at alternate site
Urena was one of 18 Marlins who tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this season to receive clearance Saturday to resume baseball activities at the team's alternate training site in Jupiter, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Along with Urena, fellow starting pitchers Sandy Alcantara and Caleb Smith are among the players who tested positive that are now ready to prepare for returns to the active roster. Because none of the three pitchers have seen any game action since late July, they'll all likely require a week or more to get their arms reconditioned for starting duty. The Marlins aren't exactly overflowing with ideal replacements in the rotation at the moment, so it's possible Urena gets activated sooner than expected and handles limited pitch counts in his initial appearances.

Placed on injured list
Urena (illness) was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Monday, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena was one of several Marlins to test positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, and Monday's transaction frees up a roster spot in his absence. The right-hander reportedly feels fine and will be eligible to return to the team once he produces two negative tests. Justin Shafer and Josh D. Smith were claimed off waivers from the Marlins in corresponding moves Monday.

Tests positive for COVID-19
Urena, who was scratched from his scheduled start Sunday, tested positive for COVID-19, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Heyman reports that Urena feels fine, so it will just be a matter of him testing negative in two consecutive tests before he rejoins the Marlins. Robert Dugger will start in his place Sunday.

Scratched from Sunday's start
Urena was a late scratch from Sunday's scheduled start against the Phillies, Andre Fernandez of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
There is no reason being given for why Urena was scratched and no roster moves, so he is presumably day-to-day. Robert Dugger will get the start instead. Manager Don Mattingly is not doing a pre-game interview, so we may have to wait until after Sunday's game to learn the reason for Urena's absence.

Sharp during Friday's outing
Urena tossed four scoreless innings during Friday's intrasquad game, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
While the Marlins have yet to officially announce their rotation, Urena is considered a near lock for one of the spots despite finishing last season in the bullpen, and his workload in camp supports that notion. The 28-year-old posted a 5.21 ERA and 4,73 FIP over 84.2 innings in 2019 with a 62:26 K:BB.

Pitching exclusively from stretch
Urena has converted to pitching only from the stretch rather than using a windup with the bases empty, Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander finished an erratic 2019 season in the bullpen, and he grew used to pitching exclusively from the stretch during that time. "I feel comfortable," Urena said. "That's something that I've been working on to get a good tempo... We hope to find a way to get the results I'm looking for." The results have indeed been promising to begin the spring as he competes for a rotation spot -- Urena has a 4:0 K:BB through five scoreless innings over his first two outings.

Competing for rotation spot
Urena will enter camp as a starter, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Urena has been the Marlins' Opening Day starter in each of the last two seasons, but he spent the final month of the 2019 campaign as a reliever as he didn't have enough time to build up to a starting workload following his return from a back injury. Reports from early January suggested he'd remain in the bullpen this season, but the Marlins have apparently changed plans. Urena has more fantasy value in the rotation than the bullpen (unless he enters the closer conversation), but he's not very useful outside of deep leagues thanks to his career 4.57 ERA and 16.0 percent strikeout rate.

Avoids arbitration
Urena signed a one-year deal with the Marlins on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Urena spent the final month of the 2019 season in the bullpen and is expected to remain in that role heading into the 2020 campaign.

Rejoins Marlins
Urena (back) was activated off the 60-day injured list Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Urena has been sidelined since early June due to a herniated disc on the left side of his back, but he's ready to rejoin the Marlins after a five-game rehab stint. The 27-year-old could receive a look in the closer's role over the final few weeks of the season.

Rehab moves to Triple-A
Urena (back) shifted his rehab assignment from High-A Jupiter to Triple-A New Orleans on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Urena gave up one run in 3.2 innings across three appearances with Jupiter in what marked his first competitive action since landing on the 60-day injured list in June with a herniated disc on the left side of his back. The Marlins are preparing to bring Urena back from the IL in a relief role, with the 27-year-old potentially getting a look as a closer in the final few weeks of the season. He'll likely make an appearance or two with New Orleans before presumably rejoining Miami when rosters expand Sunday.

Returning as closer
Urena (back) will be the Marlins's closer when he comes off the injured list in September, Craig Mish of FNTSY Sports Radio reports.
ANALYSIS
The team is not looking at the closer role beyond this season, but they think the ninth inning is a way for Urena to know exactly when to prepare to pitch upon his return, Andre Fernandez of The Athletic reports. The last time the Marlins recorded a save was when Sergio Romo saved a game on July 24, so Urena probably won't get too many saves over the final month. However, if he looks good in the role, he could enter 2020 as the closer in Miami, so this has ramifications in redraft and dynasty leagues.
