Crawford led off the seventh with home run to right off Texas starter Mike Foltynewicz to break a 1-1 tie. This was Crawford's second home run in 52 games this year after hitting two in 53 last season as he isn't much of a power threat.

Donovan Walton will pick up a start at shortstop in place of Crawford, who will take a seat for the first time all season. Despite starting in all 46 of the Mariners' games to date, Crawford has produced relatively modest counting stats (18 runs, 14 RBI, one home run, one stolen base), a byproduct of typically batting in the bottom half of one of the majors' weaker lineups.

The hot-hitting shortstop continued to demonstrate his season-long knack for timely hitting with his third-inning single, which drove in Mitch Haniger and Kyle Seager with the Mariners' second and third runs of the day. Crawford now has 14 RBI despite having hit out of the bottom third of the order in 32 of 41 games, with his .327 and .333 averages with men on base and men in scoring position, respectively, responsible for that figure.

Operating out of the leadoff spot for the first time all season, Crawford continued to wield a hot bat following a brief slump. The shortstop had just slugged his first home run two games ago as part of a 3-for-3 night that kicked off his current three-game hitting streak, and Sunday's multi-hit effort was his fourth in the last nine games overall.

Crawford went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer and two runs scored in Friday's 5-4 win over Texas.

Crawford's fourth-inning shot knotted the game up at 4-4 and gave him his first long ball of the season. The 26-year-old has three multi-hit performances over his last three games and improved his season slash line to .267/.336/.343.

Crawford continues to shrug off his typical slotting at the lowest runs of the lineup to generate solid production, with Saturday's multi-hit effort pushing his season average and on-base percentage to a solid .264 and .330, respectively. Crawford has also managed a respectable eight RBI despite his unfavorable spot in the order by slashing .318/.348/.500 over 23 plate appearances with men in scoring position.

Crawford found a way to make an impact out of the bottom of the order, extending his on-base streak to nine games. The 26-year-old has yet to leave the yard this season through 96 plate appearances, but he does have four doubles and sports a favorable 8.3 percent walk rate and 17.7 percent strikeout rate.

Crawford, who went 1-for-3 with an RBI single, a walk and a run in a loss to the Red Sox on Friday, sports a .297 average and .395 on-base percentage over the 43 plate appearances covering his last 13 games.

That said, the third component of Crawford's slash, his slugging percentage, sits at just .324 thanks to the shortstop logging all of one extra-base hit (a double) over 70 total plate appearances. The 26-year-old carries a 10-game on-base streak into Saturday's matinee matchup versus Boston.

Crawford went 3-for-6 with a run while starting both games of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Orioles.

The previously struggling shortstop continued his ascension at the plate with Tuesday's solid day. Crawford had gotten his average up over the Mendoza Line for the first time this season with his first multi-hit effort of the season Sunday, and although all three hits Tuesday were singles, and he's still in search of his first extra-base hit of the campaign, his average is now up to a respectable .256.

Crawford went 2-for-4 in Sunday's win over the Twins.

The struggling shortstop's first multi-hit effort of the season pushed his average over the Mendoza Line for the first time as well. Crawford has actually reached safely in seven of his first nine games, but he's yet to notch an extra-base hit and has generated an anemic 14.3 percent hard-hit rate through 34 plate appearances.

Crawford, who went 1-for-4 in a loss to the Giants on Monday, is hitting .154 (2-for-13) over his first four games.

The 26-year-old also has a walk and a run, but overall, his start to the 2021 campaign largely mirrors that of his forgettable Cactus League campaign. Crawford hit just .128 (5-for-39) no extra-base hits and three RBI across 52 plate appearances during the exhibition slate, and although there'd been talk this spring of the shortstop still seeing some leadoff duty, he's operated out of the No. 9 hole in all three games.

Crawford will start at shortstop and bat ninth Thursday against the Giants.

Seattle is opposing a right-handed pitcher (Kevin Gausman) in the season opener, so the lefty-hitting Crawford looks like he'll be a mainstay at the bottom of the order to begin the campaign while Mitch Haniger serves as the full-time leadoff man. The arrangement is obviously an unfavorable development for Crawford's fantasy value, and an unexpected one heading into the spring after he had hit atop the order in 48 of his 51 starts in 2020. Though he showed significant improvement with his contact rate last season, Crawford's .336 on-base percentage was still poor for a leadoff hitter, and he didn't make enough strides this spring to hold off a healthy Haniger for the job. He produced only five hits -- all singles -- in 39 at-bats in Cactus League play.

Crawford, who hit leadoff in 48 of 53 games last season, is likely to share the role more often this season with the likes of Mitch Haniger, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. "We'll continue to play with that. It won't be just locked in," manager Scott Servais said. "Last year, we had J.P. at the top, just because I thought we didn't have a ton of options. So, we'll continue to be flexible and move it around there."

The 26-year-old has gotten off to a modest start in Cactus League play -- he's hitting just .200 (2-for-10) with five walks, a stolen base and a run across his first six games -- but he reported to spring camp with about 10 pounds of additional muscle and hit a career-best .255 last season over 232 plate appearances while striking out at a career-low 16.8 percent clip. However, with Haniger back healthy after missing almost two full seasons and the veteran outfielder having slashed .330/.388/.580 across 45 games at the top of the order in 2018, he profiles as a highly viable opposite-handed alternative to the left-handed-hitting Crawford in the leadoff spot.

Crawford showed up to the Mariners' first day of full-squad workouts Tuesday sporting about 10 additional pounds of muscle, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.

The 26-year-old made significant improvements in both batting average (.255, up from .226) and on-base percentage (.336, up from .313) last season compared to 2019, but he knocked only two balls out of the park in 232 plate appearances. Crawford has never hit more than the seven homers he managed in 2019 as far as the major-league level is concerned, but he did rack up 15 round trippers back in 2017 at Triple-A Lehigh Valley while still in the Phillies organization. Crawford's focus on adding strength this offseason undoubtedly was largely centered on improving his overall production at the plate as he looks to get his offense closer to the level of his Gold Glove defense at shortstop.

Crawford and the Mariners agreed to a one-year, $2,050,000 deal Friday, avoiding arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

Crawford hasn't developed into the star he was projected to be several years ago, when he was in the running for the best prospect in baseball, but he's still a useful enough player. His .255/.336/.338 slash line last season was good for a nearly average 94 wRC+, a fine mark when paired with above-average defense at shortstop and a decent amount of speed (six steals).

Crawford went 5-for-8 with one double, two runs, four RBI and a stolen base during Saturday's doubleheader sweep against the A's.

It was a productive day for the 25-year-old, who has multi-hit performances in four of the past five games. Crawford enters the final game of the season with a .250/.333/.335 slash line, two homers, 32 runs, 23 RBI and six stolen bases in 228 plate appearances.

Crawford went 2-for-4 with a run in a loss to the Astros on Tuesday.

Crawford was one of the few productive hitters for the Mariners, as he was able to reach safely for the third time in the last four games. The brief stretch represents a rare taste of success at the plate in September for the shortstop, who's still slashing just .176/.271/.255 across the 59 plate appearances he's logged during the month. One bright spot is that Crawford has at least shown a penchant for timely hitting in that span, as he's managed to parlay his nine hits into 10 RBI.

Crawford went 1-for-5 with two RBI in the Mariners' 6-4 loss to the Giants on Thursday. He also struck out three times.

Despite the timely knock, Crawford slid further into a now 4-for-26 slump. The 25-year-old is slashing .233/.337/.668 through 163 at-bats in 2020.

The Mariners reinstated Crawford (personal) from the bereavement list Wednesday.

Crawford missed five games after leaving the team last week following a death in his family. Now that he's been reinstated, Crawford should step back in as the Mariners' everyday shortstop and primary leadoff option in Wednesday's "home" game against the Giants in San Francisco.

The Mariners are expected to activate Crawford (personal) from the bereavement list within the next few days, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.

Crawford remains in California after leaving the team over the weekend following a death in his family, but he should arrive in Seattle before the end of the week. However, because he'll need to clear COVID-19 intake testing before being eligible to play, Crawford looks poised to miss at least a few more games. The Mariners will lean on combination of Dylan Moore, Donovan Walton and Dee Strange-Gordon to fill in at shortstop while Crawford is away.

Crawford was placed on the bereavement list Friday.

The bereavement list is typically for players dealing with serious family health issues, so Crawford will be away from the team for a few days. Dee Strange-Gordon and Dylan Moore and the likely candidates to see time at shortstop during his absence.

Perhaps Tuesday's three-RBI effort could boost his confidence moving forward, as the shortstop has struggled offensively during most of the campaign.

The Mariners mustered only seven hits in 31 at-bats against Angels pitching, and Crawford was the only player who mustered more than one knock. The slick-fielding shortstop is hitting .256 this season, but he has posted an elite .347 on-base percentage while extending his hitting streak to five games.

Crawford went a combined 3-for-7 with a stolen base and three runs in a pair of seven-inning doubleheader games against the Padres on Thursday.

Crawford led off both contests and was set his teammates up well in each. The shortstop has now hit safely in five of his last six games, helping his previously plummeting stat line back to .244/.336/.319. While there's naturally still plenty of room for improvement in those numbers, Crawford sported a .282 average and .391 on-base percentage as recently as Aug. 15, so he's certainly capable of continuing his ascent.

Crawford had fallen ice cold after a hot start, managing just two hits in his last 33 at-bats entering play Tuesday. He drew a walk off Chris Paddack in his first plate appearance and then homered on a Paddack fastball the next inning, Crawford's first long ball of the season. He's still a work in progress at the plate, but the Mariners aren't going anywhere and have nothing to lose by giving Crawford everyday at-bats.

Crawford is not starting Thursday against the Dodgers, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.

Crawford will get what appears to be a routine day off following a string of 11 straight starts. Through 25 games this season, the shortstop is hitting .234/.336/.287 with four stolen bases and 15 runs scored. Dylan Moore is covering shortstop in his place Thursday.

Teammates Dylan Moore, Kyle Lewis and Kyle Seager handled the big hits in the Mariners' 10-run barrage, and Crawford effectively set the table for them on two occasions, coming home on home runs by the latter two. The young shortstop now has a five-game hitting streak, although it's been completely devoid of extra-base hits thus far.

Crawford isn't in the lineup Friday against the Rockies.

Crawford has played well while starting in every game to this point, but he'll get a breather Friday. Dee Gordon will take over at shortstop and bat eighth in the series opener against Colorado.

Crawford went 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs scored, and two walks in Wednesday's 10-7 win over the Angels.

Crawford notched a single in the top of the fourth, walked in the top of the sixth -- sparking Andrew Heaney's departure in what would be a five-run inning for the Mariners --, walked in the seventh once again, and capped his night off with a two-RBI single in the eighth. Crawford is enjoying a hot start to the season and is now riding a three-game hitting streak, going 4-for-10 (.400) with four walks and just one strikeout during that span.

Crawford went 1-for-3 with a double, two walks and two runs in a loss to the Astros on Monday.

The hot-hitting shortstop pushed his early-season on-base percentage to an absurd .529 with Monday's effort, which saw Crawford reach safely for the third consecutive contest. Just as encouraging is the fact the 25-year-old has struck out just once in his first 17 plate appearances after averaging a whiff every 4.8 PAs in 2019. The usual caveat regarding the small four-game sample naturally applies, but Crawford's hot start is certainly a welcome sight under any circumstances after his unsightly .226/.313/.371 line in a career-high 93 games last season.

Crawford went 3-for-4 with a pair of triples and scored a run in Saturday's 7-2 loss to the Astros.

Crawford showed off his speed with the pair of triples, and he was able to score in the fifth inning after a Mallex Smith groundout. The 25-year-old Crawford had four triples and five stolen bases in 93 games last season. It appears Crawford will be the primary shortstop for the Mariners this season, but Dee Gordon could earn some time there as well.

Crawford, who has remained in the Arizona area while spring training has been suspended, is likely to be present for the informal workouts the Mariners will allow players to conduct at their Peoria complex beginning this week, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.

The team's spring training facility is set to open either Monday or Tuesday for voluntary workouts, making the Mariners one of many teams around MLB that will be doing the same in coming days. Crawford has been working out on his own in the area, but having access to at least certain parts of the facility will allow him to presumably ramp up baseball-specific activities with the proper equipment.

Crawford was putting together a strong Cactus League resume before spring training was suspended and is ticketed for a major role this season as the everyday shortstop, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.

The 25-year-old shortstop worked to put on muscle this offseason, and the extra strength was paying some nice dividends over the first half of Cactus League play. Crawford had generated a .400/.429/.560 line with two triples, five RBI, two walks, two stolen bases and two runs across 10 exhibitions, raising the already robust expectations for him ahead of the 2020 season. Crawford will look to improve on both contact- and hard-hit rates this season after posting pedestrian 75.9- and 28.4-percent figures in those categories, respectively, in 2019.

Crawford spent the offseason working with strength and conditioning coach James Clifton and put on 10 pounds of muscle, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.

The 25-year-old frequently made a mockery of big-league pitching during a breakout June last season, slashing .338/.413/.569 with two home runs and 17 RBI across 16 games during the month. However, that surge was followed by a significant downturn over the final three months of the season, with Crawford hitting just .178 across his final 60 games and also missing some time due to a strained right hamstring. Both the extended slump and the injury pointed toward a need for Crawford to get stronger, hence his diligent offseason program aimed at just that goal. The promising shortstop, who flashed an improve glove last season, says he already feels the increased strength paying dividends in terms of both the exit velocity of his batted balls and his throws across the diamond.

Crawford is expected to miss at least a week due to the hamstring injury he aggravated in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Rangers, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Crawford underwent an MRI on the injury Saturday, and while the results weren't revealed, the team was concerned enough to send the 24-year-old back to Seattle for further examination. Given that the last-place Mariners have little on the line at this point, it wouldn't be surprising if the team erred on the side of caution and kept Crawford sidelined for the remainder of the season. Dylan Moore is expected to serve as the primary replacement at shortstop for however long Crawford is sidelined.

Crawford is not in the lineup Saturday against the Rangers due to a hamstring injury, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Crawford apparently felt some tightness in his hamstring Thursday and tweaked it again Friday, prompting the Mariners to give him the day off Saturday. Dylan Moore is starting at shortstop in place of Crawford, who is hoping to return to the lineup in a day or two, per Divish.
