Allows two homers in loss
Sears (5-14) took the loss Sunday against the Angels after giving up three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four over four innings.
ANALYSIS
Sears allowed multiple home runs in a start for the first time since Aug. 26 and failed to go at least five innings for the first time since Aug. 20. He allowed 33 home runs in total this season, which was the most by an Oakland pitcher since 2013. The 27-year-old finishes 2023 with a 4.54 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 161:53 K:BB in 172.1 innings. He figures to be one of the Athletics' top returning arms in 2024.

Fans seven in loss
Sears (5-13) yielded two runs on six hits and two walks over five innings Sunday, striking out seven and taking a loss against Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Sears gave up a two-run single to Spencer Torkelson in the third inning but looked solid otherwise. Sears has given up two or fewer runs in four of his last five starts, posting a 2.93 ERA during that stretch. For the year, he owns a 4.49 ERA and a 157:51 K:BB through 168.1 frames. Sears' next outing is lined up to be on the road against the Angels.
Sep 19, 2023
Yields four runs in loss
Sears (5-12) allowed four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out six over 5.2 innings to take the loss Monday versus the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Sears had allowed a total of three runs over 17 innings across his first three starts in September, all of which were wins. He wasn't able to continue his success Monday, with Jose Caballero's two-run home run in the fourth inning being the biggest hit off Sears. The Oakland lefty is now at a 4.52 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 150:49 K:BB through 163.1 innings over 30 starts. He's lined up for a more favorable home start versus the Tigers over the weekend.

Downs Houston
Sears (5-11) earned the win Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over six innings against the Astros. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
After allowing a run in the opening frame, Sears settled in and held the potent Astros offense to just one additional tally over his final five innings. The 27-year-old southpaw has now won three straight starts, allowing three runs over 17 innings in that span. Sears' ERA is down to 4.45 on the season with a 1.23 WHIP and 144:45 K:BB through 29 starts (157.2 innings). He'll look to keep it rolling in his next start, currently scheduled for early next week against Seattle.

Grabs fourth win
Sears (4-11) earned the win Wednesday, allowing a run on four hits and four walks over five innings in a 5-2 victory over the Blue Jays. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Sears dealt with frequent traffic Wednesday, but he managed to hold Toronto to just one run through five innings, earning his second straight win. The 27-year-old Sears has now allowed just two runs in 11 innings over his last two outings after surrendering 13 runs in his prior two starts (10 innings). Overall, the southpaw sports a 4.51 ERA with a 1.23 WHIP and 141:43 K:BB across 28 starts (151.2 innings) this season. Sears is currently lined up for a tough road matchup with the Astros in his next outing.
Sep 2, 2023
Bounces back against Angels
Sears (3-11) threw six scoreless innings in a win over the Angels on Friday, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
Sears had an 8.25 ERA over five starts (24 innings) in August, but he started September with a much better performance. The southpaw likely benefited from facing an Angels team that has essentially run up the white flag on 2023. Nonetheless, Sears hasn't been all that good this year either with a 4.60 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 138:39 K:BB through 146.2 innings over 27 starts. He's tentatively lined up for a home start versus the Blue Jays next week.
Aug 27, 2023
Rocked by White Sox
Sears (2-11) took the loss Saturday, allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks over six innings against the White Sox. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Though Sears went six innings for the first time since July 16 and turned in his best strikeout total since June 22, he fell to his 11th loss of the campaign and surrendered six runs. He struggled to keep the ball in the park, giving up a trio of home runs on the day, including solo home runs by Lenyn Sosa and Andrew Benintendi and a three-run shot by Yoan Moncada. Over his last two starts (10 innings) Sears has given up 13 runs and five home runs while holding a 12:4 K:BB. He's tentatively lined up to take on the Angels for his next outing.
Aug 20, 2023
Roughed up by Orioles
Sears (2-10) allowed seven runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out four over four innings to take the loss Sunday versus the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Across four starts in August, Sears has yielded 16 runs over 18 innings, though he's had three tough matchups in that span. Sunday marked the first time in five starts he's given up multiple home runs, though one was an inside-the-park shot from Jorge Mateo. Sears is now at a 4.61 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 127:35 K:BB through 134.2 innings through 25 starts this season. He's lined up for a road outing against the White Sox in his next appearance.
Aug 14, 2023
Walks four in no-decision
Sears yielded three run on six hits and four walks over five innings in Monday's loss to the Cardinals. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Sears allowed one run through four innings before coughing up a two-run shot to Paul Goldschmidt in the fifth. Sears has coughed up seven runs in his last two starts, raising his ERA to 4.27. In six starts since the All-Star break, he's registered a 5.23 ERA. Sears' next outing is projected to be at home against the Orioles.
Aug 9, 2023
Gives up four runs in loss
Sears (2-9) allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out six over four innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Sears had gone at least five innings in each of his last six appearances before falling short of the mark Tuesday. The Rangers tagged him for three runs in the fourth inning. The southpaw is now at a 4.23 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 117:29 K:BB through 125.2 innings over 23 starts this season. He's projected for a road start in St. Louis next week.
Aug 4, 2023
Falls to 2-8
Sears (2-8) took the loss against the Dodgers on Thursday, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out five batters over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Of the six hits Sears allowed, five went for extra bases, but the Dodgers managed to score just twice while he was in the game. Despite keeping Oakland in the contest, the left-hander got little run support and took his eighth loss of the season. Sears has been better than his record indicates-- his 4.07 ERA is far from disastrous, and he's posted seven quality starts across 22 outings -- but such is the fate of a starting pitcher on one of the league's worst offensive teams. Wins aren't likely to start coming in abundance for Sears, but he's not entirely off the fantasy radar, as he's provided some positive stats this season. For instance, his 1.08 WHIP ranks 10th among qualified MLB pitchers, ahead of more heralded hurlers such as Logan Webb, Zac Gallen and Spencer Strider.
Jul 29, 2023
Snags second win
Sears (2-7) allowed one run on four hits and a walk over five innings Friday, striking out five and earning a win against Colorado.
ANALYSIS
The lone blemish on Sears' line came in the fourth inning when he served up a solo shot to Randal Grichuk. Sears snapped a streak of four straight losses dating back to his last win June 11. Since the start of June, he's produced a 3.79 ERA through 57 frames, lowering his season mark to 4.09 across 21 starts. His next outing is projected to be on the road against the Dodgers next week.
Jul 22, 2023
Allows three homers in loss
Sears (1-7) took the loss Friday versus the Astros, allowing five runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out just one over 5.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
All of the damage came on a trio of home runs -- two from Kyle Tucker and the other from Alex Bregman. This was the second start in a row that Sears has allowed multiple homers, and he's now yielded 24 long balls through 20 starts this season. The southpaw is at a 4.19 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 101:24 K:BB through 111.2 innings. His struggles with keep the ball down make him a high-risk fantasy play, though he's been able to limit the damage by not giving up too many baserunners. That's little comfort heading into his next start, which is projected to come at Coors Field in Colorado.
Jul 16, 2023
Yields three runs
Sears did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing three runs on four hits over 6.1 innings against the Twins. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Sears worked through four scoreless frames before allowing a pair of solo homers in the fifth inning. Entering Sunday's contest, he'd allowed two long balls over his previous 23.1 innings. Sears is quietly putting together a decent 2023 campaign; he's allowed three or fewer runs in nine of his last 11 outings, lowering his season ERA to 3.99 across 19 starts. Sears' next appearance is currently lined up to be at home against Houston.
Jul 9, 2023
Tosses another gem
Sears did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing one run (zero earned) on one hit and three walks over five innings against Boston. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
After hurling 7.1 scoreless innings against the Tigers last time out, Sears posted another five innings without an earned run Sunday. Sears enters the All-Star break on a high note, having gone seven or more innings in three of his last five appearances, a stretch in which he has surrendered 19 hits and owns a 3.26 ERA over 30.1 innings. Though the lefty has been one of Oakland's top arms this season, he's struggled with keeping the ball inside the park, giving up 1.7 HR/9 on the year.
Jul 4, 2023
Fires 7.1 scoreless in no-decision
Sears did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing five hits and no walks over 7.1 scoreless innings against Detroit. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander broke a string of three consecutive losses with his second scoreless outing of the campaign, but he missed out on the win since the game remained scoreless until the 10th inning. Sears surrendered five earned runs his last time out against the Yankees, but he's now covered at least seven frames in three of his past four starts. The 27-year-old holds a 4.09 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 89:20 K:BB through 94.2 innings this season, and he tentatively lines up for one more start before the All-Star break Sunday in Boston.
Jun 29, 2023
On wrong side of perfect game
Sears (1-6) allowed seven runs (five earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out five over four-plus innings, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Not only was Sears' performance lackluster, but his Oakland teammates couldn't muster a baserunner against Yankees starter Domingo German. Prior to Wednesday, Sears had allowed all of nine runs over his first four starts in June. The southpaw saw his ERA rise to 4.43 with a 1.08 WHIP and 85:20 K:BB through 87.1 innings over 16 starts this season. Sears will attempt to bounce back in his projected road start in Detroit next week.
Jun 22, 2023
Handed tough loss
Sears (1-5) took the loss Thursday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk over seven innings against the Guardians. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Sears retired the first 11 batters he faced before giving up a single to Jose Ramirez with two outs in the fourth inning. He would get out of the inning unscathed but wasn't so lucky in the fifth, leaving a sweeper up in the zone on his first pitch to Josh Bell, who then launched it 430 feet into the left field stands. Both of the runs against the lefty came in the fifth inning and he actually did a great job of mixing up his pitches over his seven frames before being dealt the tough loss. Sears' eight strikeouts on the afternoon were the second most he's recorded in a start this season and he's now gone seven innings in two straight, posting a 15:1 K:BB ratio over that span.
Jun 17, 2023
Fans seven in loss
Sears (1-4) allowed four runs on four hits over seven innings Friday, striking out seven and taking a loss against Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
Sears coughed up four runs on three homers in what was otherwise a pretty strong outing Friday. It was his second straight start without issuing a walk after allowing five free passes to the Pirates on June 5. The 27-year-old southpaw is now sporting a 4.24 ERA while yielding 17 homers through 76.1 frames this season. Sears will carry an impressive 72:16 K:BB into his next outing, which is projected to be next week in Cleveland.
Jun 12, 2023
Snares first win
Sears (1-3) earned the win Sunday, allowing two runs on six hits and over five innings against the Brewers. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Though Spears' victory was his first of the season, he's strung together a handful of impressive starts, having allowed two or fewer earned runs in all of his last six appearances. The 27-year-old bounced back from a season-high five walks in his previous start to allow no free passes Sunday. After picking up a 9.4 K/9 across his first nine starts, Sears' strikeout value has plummeted over his last four appearances, owning a 6.1 K/9 in that span. He's lined up to make his next start during a homestand against the Phillies.
Jun 5, 2023
Walks five batters
Sears allowed one run on two hits and five walks over 4.2 innings in Monday's loss to the Pirates. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Sears tossed four shutout frames before the Pirates finally broke through in the fifth inning. His lack of command caused him to throw a career-high 112 pitches despite not finishing five innings. On the bright side, he's given up two or fewer earned runs in five straight starts, dropping his ERA to 4.20 through 64.1 frames. Sears is currently lined up to start in Milwaukee this weekend.
May 31, 2023
Quality start in no-decision
Sears allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out two over six innings in a no-decision versus Atlanta on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Sears was able to limit the damage to a Kevin Pillar solo home run in the third inning. After throwing just 59 pitches in his last outing, Sears was back up to 90 pitches (59 strikes) Tuesday. He's allowed just four runs over his last 22.1 innings spanning four starts, but he remains in search of his first win of the campaign. The southpaw has a 4.37 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 54:11 K:BB over 59.2 innings through 11 starts this season. Sears is projected to make his next start on the road in Pittsburgh.
May 26, 2023
Solid in no-decision
Sears allowed a run on three hits and struck out one over five innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Sears threw just 59 pitches (40 strikes), but Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports this was likely a tactical decision rather than anything influenced by injuries, as the Athletics didn't want Sears to go a third time through the order. The lone blemish on his line was a Ty France solo shot in the first inning, making this his third straight start where he allowed three runs or fewer. Sears lowered his season ERA to 4.70 with a 1.10 WHIP and 52:10 K:BB through 53.2 innings over 10 starts. He's projected for a challenging home start versus Atlanta next week.
May 21, 2023
Effective again Saturday
Sears allowed two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out seven batters over six innings in a no-decision against Houston on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Sears' outing got off to a rough start when he allowed two first-inning runs, but he rebounded from there and held Houston scoreless for the following five frames. The southpaw finished with his third quality start of the campaign and didn't allow any homers for just the second time this season. Sears posted an uninspiring 6.23 ERA over five starts in April, but he's been much better in May, recording a 3.57 ERA through four starts. Though he's yet to record a win this season, Sears is beginning to pick up steam as a fantasy option in deeper leagues, with his 9.4 K/9 being particularly enticing.
May 14, 2023
Solid in no-decision
Sears allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out six over 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Rangers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sears did alright in this start, aside from a two-run home run by Robbie Grossman in the first inning. Adolis Garcia also knocked an RBI single in the third, but the Athletics were briefly able to pull even in the seventh to get Sears off the hook. The southpaw now has a 5.27 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 44:9 K:BB through 42.2 innings across eight starts. He's lined up for a tough road start in Houston for his next time on the mound.
May 13, 2023
Starting Sunday
Sears start has been pushed to Sunday vs. the Rangers, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
James Kaprielian, who was just recalled from Triple-A, will slot into Mason Miller's (elbow) spot in the rotation Saturday, pushing everyone else back a day. Sears will matchup against Andrew Heaney on Sunday.
May 8, 2023
Coughs up three homers
Sears (0-3) allowed five runs on six hits over 5.1 innings Monday, striking out four and taking a loss against the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Sears looked strong to begin his outing with four scoreless frames. He gave up a two-run shot to Oswaldo Cabrera in the fifth followed by two more homers in the sixth. Sears has now allowed 10 long balls in 37.1 innings, resulting in an unsightly 5.54 ERA. Still searching for his first win of the year, he's expected to face the Rangers at home this weekend.
May 4, 2023
Tosses six scoreless innings
Sears did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing four hits and two walks over six scoreless innings in a 7-2 loss to Seattle. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Sears turned in his first scoreless outing of the season, but Oakland's bullpen couldn't finish the job. This was an excellent rebound game for the southpaw after allowing 6 runs over 4.1 innings on April 27th against the Angels. While the 27-year-old hasn't been elite, he does sport a stingy 1.19 WHIP so far this season. Sears is tentatively slated to face the Yankees in his next start.
Apr 28, 2023
Hit hard by Angels
Sears (0-2) took the loss against the Angels on Thursday, allowing six runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four batters over 4.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Sears made it through two scoreless innings before Los Angeles hung a five-spot on him in the third frame. The big blow was a three-run home run off the bat of Brandon Drury, which was the seventh homer Sears has given up across five starts this season. The southpaw turned some heads with 11 punchouts over six innings against Texas his previous time out, but he fell back to earth with just four strikeouts Thursday. Sears has mostly failed to impress as a full-time starter this season, posting a 6.23 ERA and 1.23 WHIP through 26 frames.
Apr 21, 2023
Punches out 11
Sears gave up four runs on five hits and two walks over six frames in Friday's win over Texas. He struck out 11 and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
An ugly first inning put a damper on an impressive outing by Sears. All four runs allowed came during that frame, including Jonah Heim's three-run blast. Sears' 11 strikeouts and 17 whiffs both flew by his previous career highs of seven and 12, respectively. He's now sporting a 23:4 K:BB with six homers allowed through four starts. Sears is projected for a road matchup with the Angels next week.
Apr 17, 2023
Hurt by long ball
Sears did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits over six innings. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Sears pitched well overall but was punished by the long ball in Sunday's outing. The 27-year-old allowed a solo blast to Tommy Pham in the second to get the scoring started for the Mets. He eventually retired 13 straight batters before allowing another solo home run in the sixth, this time to Francisco Lindor to put the Mets back up 2-1. Sears earned his first quality start in three tries this season and now sits at a 4.60 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and a 12:2 K:BB over 15.2 innings. He's tentatively lined up to face the Rangers on the road next weekend.
Apr 10, 2023
Takes first loss
Sears (0-1) took the loss Monday, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk over five innings against the Orioles. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Sears struggled to find the strike zone and threw only 55 of his 90 pitches for strikes. He gave up a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and a solo shot in the third before exiting with a 3-1 deficit. Sears has surrendered six runs on 11 hits while fanning nine and issuing two walks over his first 9.2 innings of the 2023 campaign.
Apr 5, 2023
Pulled in fifth vs. Guardians
Sears didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Guardians after allowing three runs in 4.2 innings on eight hits. He walked one and struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Sears didn't give up a run in the third, but gave up two in the fourth including a solo homer to Gabriel Arias. He was pulled in the fifth after giving up an RBI double to Jose Ramirez, but the Athletics were able to come back to win to prevent Sears from picking up the loss. It also wasn't a very efficient start for the southpaw, as he needed 98 pitches to get the 14 outs. Sears has a scheduled start Monday against the Orioles, and isn't a recommended option for that outing.
Mar 30, 2023
Lined up as No. 5 starter
Sears is lined up to start for the Athletics on Tuesday against the Guardians, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Sears appears to have won the No. 5 spot in Oakland's season-opening starting rotation, as Adam Oller and Adrian Martinez are listed as available relievers in Thursday night's Opening Day game versus the Angels. Sears, 27, posted a 4.69 ERA and 36:18 K:BB in 48 innings last year with the A's after being acquired from the Yankees in the Frankie Montas trade.
Mar 28, 2023
Gets roster spot, role undecided
Sears has made the Athletics' Opening Day roster, but whether he'll serve as a starter or reliever is yet to be clarified, Ben Ross of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Both Sears and Adam Oller (illness) will open the regular season with the big club after each garnered experience as starters and relievers during their rookie 2022 campaigns. If the decision on which of the two will open in the rotation would be based solely on last season's numbers, Sears would be the clear-cut choice -- his 6-3 record and 3.86 ERA was exponentially better than Oller's respective 2-8 and 6.30 figures in those categories. However, Sears was shakier this spring, posting an 0-1 mark and 5.19 ERA in 17.1 Cactus League frames. The revelation on who'll get the starting call may not come for several days, as the first turn in the rotation that would go to either Sears or Oller isn't slated to come until Tuesday, April 4.
Mar 5, 2023
Scuffling in spring
Sears has allowed five earned runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings while recording six strikeouts across his first two Cactus League starts.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander is competing for a spot in the starting rotation after turning in a solid 6-3 record, 3.86 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across 17 appearances (11 starts) as a rookie in 2022. Jack McGruder of MLB.com reports Sears has been working at refining his slider all offseason and used it very effectively against the Cubs in Thursday's start; all three runs allowed by Sears came off his fastball, while the southpaw racked up two strikeouts of Eric Hosmer and induced an inning-ending double play from Cody Bellinger with the slider.
Oct 2, 2022
Records quality start
Sears did not allow a run on two hits and two walks while striking out six over six innings Saturday against the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Sears did not give up an extra-base hit after righty Adam Oller allowed three runs in the first inning during his outing as an opener. The lefty has struggled mightily during his last seven outings, recording a 6.06 ERA and 1.65 WHIP over 32.2 innings. This was the third quality start of the 26-year-old rookie's career.
Oct 1, 2022
Working behind opener
Sears will be available behind opener Adam Oller during Saturday's game against Seattle, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sears was initially listed as the starting pitcher for Saturday's matchup, but the team will give Oller some work to begin the game after he was reinstated from the injured list Friday. Sears hasn't been particularly effective recently, posting a 10.43 ERA and 2.11 WHIP in 14.2 innings over his last four appearances.
Sep 25, 2022
Clobbered by Mets
Sears (6-3) took the loss during Sunday's 13-4 defeat at the hands of the Mets, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Sears limited New York to one run through two frames before permitting two runs on four baserunners in the third and three runs on three baserunners in the fourth. The 26-year-old has experienced an erratic September that features two successful starts, during which he's surrendered two runs across 11 combined innings, but a more concerning three poor starts with 17 runs permitted across 9.2 innings. The culmination is an 8.27 September ERA after posting a 2.53 mark in his first four starts with Oakland. He'll look to get back on track next weekend against Seattle.
Sep 21, 2022
Whiffs seven in win
Sears (6-2) earned the win during Tuesday's 4-1 victory over Seattle, allowing an unearned run on one hit and three walks with seven strikeouts in five innings.
ANALYSIS
Sears was lights out aside from a 37-pitch second inning, when a pair of two-out walks forced in the lone run. The 26-year-old fired 53 of 86 pitches for strikes with nine of the swinging variety en route to a career-high seven strikeouts. The impressive start snaps a two-turn rough patch, during which Sears permitted 11 runs across six innings. He carries a 3.58 ERA into his next start, scheduled for Sunday against the Mets.
Sep 15, 2022
Struggles again Wednesday
Sears gave up five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three batters in a no-decision versus Texas on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Sears made it through a scoreless first inning before giving up four runs in the second and another in the third. The big blow against him was a three-run homer off the bat of Marcus Semien that gave Texas its first lead. Though Sears exited the game down four runs, he avoided a second straight loss thanks to a ninth-inning Oakland comeback. The southpaw has had a rough go of late, allowing 11 earned runs and five homers over six innings across his past two starts.
Sep 9, 2022
Crushed in loss
Sears (5-2) took the loss Thursday against the White Sox, allowing six runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out two in two innings.
ANALYSIS
Sears got off to a rough start as Elvis Andrus and Yoan Moncada welcomed him with back-to-back homers. In the second, Andrus singled in a run and Moncada launched a three-run shot to give Chicago an early 6-0 lead. Sears had allowed only three home runs in his first 49.1 innings this season but allowed three more Thursday before recording five outs. The poor showing ballooned his ERA from 2.37 to 3.33 for the season. His next start will likely be in the middle of next week in Texas.
Sep 3, 2022
Allows two runs
Sears did not factor into the decision against the Orioles on Friday, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking one over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Sears tossed 55 of 81 pitches for strikes across six frames of two-run ball Friday, picking up a quality start. It was his second quality start this season and his second in consecutive games. Oakland seems to be giving him a longer leash than the Yankees and Sears has impressed, going 2-1 with a 2.66 ERA in five games since the acquisition. The lefty will take a 5-1 record and a 2.37 ERA into his next appearance.
Aug 27, 2022
Slips up in fifth inning
Sears (5-1) allowed three runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out three over six innings, taking the loss versus the Yankees on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Sears did the bare minimum for a quality start, the first of his big-league career. Unfortunately, he also allowed a season-high three runs, which came on an Aaron Judge home run in the fifth inning. The four walks and eight hits were also season highs for Sears, who held his own against the team that traded him at the deadline for Frankie Montas. Sears owns a 2.28 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 26:13 K:BB through 43.1 innings across 11 outings (six starts) between the A's and the Yankees this year. He's projected for a favorable road start versus the Nationals next week.
Aug 21, 2022
Earns fifth win
Sears (5-0) earned the win Sunday, allowing one run on six hits and one walk over five innings in a 5-3 victory over the Mariners. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Sears was sharp again Sunday, allowing just one run to score, a solo shot off the bat of Mitch Haniger in the third inning. The rookie needed just 79 pitches to complete five innings as he earned his second win with the A's and fifth on the season. While he sports a 1.93 ERA, his 4.54 xFIP entering Sunday suggests regression is likely to follow. He next lines up to face the Yankees this weekend.
Aug 17, 2022
Effective in first Oakland win
Sears (4-0) allowed four hits and three walks while striking out two over five scoreless innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Sears fared better in his second start for the Athletics, keeping the Rangers quiet. He threw 76 pitches (47 strikes) in this start, earning his first win with Oakland after being included in the return from the Yankees in the Frankie Montas trade. Sears has logged a 1.95 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 20:8 K:BB across 32.1 innings through nine appearances (four starts) between the two teams this year. The 26-year-old southpaw should stick in the rotation after Paul Blackburn (finger) was ruled out for the year Tuesday. Sears is projected to make his next start at home versus the Mariners this weekend.

Maintains rotation spot
Sears is scheduled to start Tuesday's road game against the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Sears is receiving a second straight turn through the rotation while Paul Blackburn (finger) remains on the injured list. In his Athletics debut last week versus the Angels, Sears took a no-decision while striking out three and allowing two earned runs on three hits and no walks over 5.1 innings.

Allows two runs
Sears allowed two earned runs on three hits and no walks while striking out three across 5.1 innings Wednesday against the Angels. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Sears was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas prior to the start and made his debut with the Athletics. He faced a subpar Angels lineup and his only earned runs came after he exited the game with runners on first and second. Sears should have the chance to stick in the rotation after Paul Blackburn (finger) was placed on the injured list Wednesday. Across 27.1 frames this season, Sears has maintained a 2.30 ERA and an 18:5 K:BB in appearances split between the Yankees and Athletics.

Recalled by Oakland
Sears was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Sears was dealt from the Yankees to the Athletics last week, and he allowed a run on four hits and no walks while striking out five in 4.2 innings during his first start at Las Vegas. Sears made seven appearances (two starts) for the Yankees earlier in the year and posted a 2.05 ERA and 0.86 WHIP in 22 innings. The Athletics placed Paul Blackburn (finger) on the injured list Wednesday, so Sears will step in as the starter for Wednesday's game against the Angels.

Dealt to Oakland in Montas deal
Sears was traded from the Yankees to the Athletics along with Ken Waldichuk, Luis Medina and Cooper Bowman in exchange for Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino, Jack Curry of YES Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Sears is an interesting starting pitching prospect who will get more of an opportunity in Oakland than he would have in New York. He has a 2.05 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 15:5 K:BB in 22 innings (seven appearances) in the big leagues this season. Sears is a command/control artist who throws three pitches and relies on spotting his fastball, which he throws roughly 60 percent of the time. He had a 1.67 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 55 strikeouts in 43 innings at Triple-A.

Heads back to minors
Sears was returned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Thursday's doubleheader against the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Sears served as the 27th man during Thursday's twin bill and allowed two runs on a hit and no walks while striking out one in three relief innings. However, he'll head back to the minors, where he's posted a 2.06 ERA and 0.74 WHIP in 39.1 innings over 10 appearances (eight starts) this season.

Joins big club for twin bill
The Yankees recalled Sears from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and designated him as the 27th man for Thursday's doubleheader in Houston.
ANALYSIS
Sears will be available as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen for both ends of the twin bill before likely returning to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday. Though the Yankees have an opening in the rotation with Luis Severino (lat) recently landing on the injured list, the team is expected to turn to Domingo German (shoulder) -- who is on the 60-day IL but is ready for activation -- rather than Sears when a fifth starter is needed for the first time coming out of the All-Star break.

Returns to Triple-A
Sears was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Wednesday's extra-inning win over the Reds.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was called up by the Yankees in early July and covered 3.2 frames in long relief Wednesday after starter Luis Severino was removed with a shoulder injury. Sears had given up only one run across 15.1 innings entering the contest, but Cincinnati scored two runs against him. The 26-year-old could be an option to step into the rotation should Severino be forced to miss any time.

Rejoins major-league roster
Sears was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes/Barre on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Sears was optioned less than a week ago, but the Yankees are allowed to bring him back since they are placing a player on the injured list (Ron Marinaccio) in the corresponding move. The 26-year-old lefty hasn't pitched at any level since his June 28 outing against Oakland, so he will be available for multiple innings behind Jordan Montgomery on Sunday. Sears has impressed with a spotless ERA and eight strikeouts against four walks in his first four major-league appearances (12.2 innings).

Again demoted after start
Sears (3-0) was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after picking up the win Tuesday against the Athletics. He allowed three hits and had one strikeout and one walk across 5.2 scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old was demoted immediately after delivering five shutout innings in his first MLB start May 25, and he'll once again head back to Triple-A following another strong outing. Sears threw 48 of his 78 pitches for strikes and generated only seven whiffs, but he gave up just one extra-base hit and kept Oakland off the board. The left-hander is returning to the minors since New York's starting rotation -- which has been one of the best in baseball -- is currently healthy, but he should be the favorite for a call-up any time the Yankees are in need of a spot starter.
Jun 28, 2022
Called up ahead of start
Sears was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre prior to his start Tuesday against the A's.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees haven't needed to use more than five starters for most of the season, so Sears has largely pitched at Triple-A, where he has a 2.25 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and 33:6 K:BB in 28 innings over his last six starts. He also struck out five over five scoreless innings en route to a win in his lone MLB start this season, so there's reason to deploy him in this nice matchup in a spot start against Oakland.

Starting Tuesday
Sears will start Tuesday's game against the Athletics, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Although the Yankees' starters are fully healthy, Sears will make a spot start against the Athletics to give the team's other starters and additional day of rest. Over his first three appearances (one start) of the season, the southpaw struck out seven in seven scoreless innings.

Could make spot start
Manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Sears could be called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this week to make a spot start with the Yankees, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Yankees have all five of their starting pitchers in optimal health, but Boone is still eager to temporarily add another arm to the mix in an effort to afford each member of the rotation some added rest amid a heavy schedule of games. According to Conor Foley of The Scranton Times-Tribune, Sears was scratched from his scheduled start Sunday for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, which seemingly supports the notion that he's on track to join the Yankees for their three-game series with the Athletics to begin the week. In his first MLB start May 25 against the Orioles, Sears struck out five over five scoreless innings.

Demoted after picking up win
Sears (2-0) earned the win Wednesday against the Orioles after giving up three hits with five strikeouts and two walks over five scoreless innings. He was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after the contest.
ANALYSIS
It's not a major surprise Sears was demoted after being called up for a spot start in the wake of Sunday's doubleheader against the White Sox, but it's still a tough draw after delivering a strong performance. The 26-year-old generated 10 swinging strikes and didn't allow an extra-base hit. Sears will return to the rotation for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but he should be in the mix throughout the rest of the season whenever the Yankees require a spot starter.
May 25, 2022
Promoted to start Wednesday
Sears was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and will start Wednesday's game against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old was reported as Wednesday's expected starter earlier in the day, and he's now officially been added to the big-league roster. Sears made his MLB debut earlier this season and has two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, but it now time for his first major-league start. The left-hander has been dominant at Triple-A this year with a 1.25 ERA, 0.61 WHIP and 30:2 K:BB across 21.2 innings.
May 23, 2022
Likely starting Wednesday
Sears will likely start Wednesday's game against the Orioles, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sears made two relief appearances for the Yankees early in the season and tossed two scoreless innings before being sent down in mid-April. However, he's worked mainly as a starter at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and has posted a 1.25 ERA and 0.61 WHIP in 21.2 innings over six appearances (four starts). The Yankees need a spot starter after Sunday's doubleheader against the White Sox, so Sears will likely step in to make his first major-league start during Wednesday's home matchup.
Apr 17, 2022
Optioned to Triple-A
Sears was optioned to Triple-A Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Sears earned a spot in the big-league bullpen to begin the 2022 season, and he delivered two scoreless innings across two appearances. He also was awarded the win Saturday against the Orioles prior to being optioned, and he should be promoted to the major-league roster to contribute out of the bullpen at some point again during the campaign.

Makes Opening Day roster
Sears was told Monday that he's made the Yankees' Opening Day roster, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sears was protected from the Rule 5 draft in November, and he'll be available to make his major-league debut to begin the 2022 campaign. The southpaw progressed to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last year and posted a 2.87 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in 53.1 innings across 10 starts. He should be able to serve as a bulk reliever or spot starter in the big leagues.
