Shut down for year
Manager Alex Cora announced Friday that Jansen will not pitch again this season, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was activated off the COVID-19 injured list last weekend, but he hasn't made an appearance since Sept. 12 and the Red Sox don't have a reason to push him out there in their final two regular-season games. The veteran closer is due a $16 million salary from Boston in 2024.

Returns from COVID IL
The Red Sox reinstated Jansen from the COVID-19 injured list Saturday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen tested positive for COVID-19 on Sept. 13 and will now return to Boston's bullpen after a 10-day absence, sending Zack Weiss back to Triple-A Worcester. The 35-year-old closer has allowed five runs in three innings across his last five appearances, and he hasn't recorded a save since Aug. 20.

Return could be pushed to next week
Jansen (illness) has yet to be cleared and now might not return from the COVID-19 injured list until next week, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
It was reported over the weekend that Jansen was expected back when first eligible Wednesday, but that's not happening now. Once the reliever is cleared, he will need to throw a bullpen session before he's ready to rejoin the Red Sox' bullpen. Boston's lone save to be recorded since Jansen went down was notched by Chris Martin, and Martin should continue to be at the top of the closer pecking order until Jansen is back.
Sep 17, 2023
Likely activated Wednesday
Jansen (illness) is expected to be activated from the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen tested positive for COVID-19 following his removal from the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Yankees, but he resumed throwing this weekend and should be cleared to rejoin the Red Sox for the final game of their upcoming three-game set at Texas. John Schreiber blew a save in Jansen's absence Saturday at Toronto.
Sep 13, 2023
Out with COVID
Jansen was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday after testing positive for the virus, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander was pulled from Tuesday's appearance due to fatigue and illness symptoms, and he's now tested positive for COVID-19. Jansen will have to remain on the COVID IL for at least seven days, which leaves Chris Martin and John Schreiber as the likely candidates to split closing duties for the next week.

Battling illness
Jansen was taken out of his appearance in the ninth inning Tuesday after experiencing symptoms of fatigue and illness, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen allowed two baserunners before being pulled from Tuesday's game against the Yankees. Now that he's been confirmed to be dealing with fatigue and fighting off an illness, it's likely that Jansen will be held out for a few days before making his next appearance. Josh Winckowski and Chris Martin could see an uptick in save opportunities while Jansen recovers.
Sep 12, 2023
Exits with trainer
Jansen was removed from Tuesday's game against the Yankees with an apparent injury, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was removed by a trainer after allowing a walk and a single to begin the ninth inning. It's unclear at the moment what exactly is bothering Jansen, but the Red Sox should provide more information following Tuesday's game.
Sep 5, 2023
Blows save in extras
Jansen (3-6) blew the save and took the loss Tuesday against the Rays. He allowed three runs (two earned) on one hit and one walk without recording an out in the 11th inning.
ANALYSIS
After Boston took a one-run lead in the top of the 11th inning, Jansen issued a walk to Yandy Diaz to start the bottom of the frame before Brandon Lowe launched a walk-off homer. It's Jansen's first blown save since May 13 -- he'd converted his previous 20 save chances while pitching to a 2.57 ERA in 14 innings since the All-Star break. Overall, the 35-year-old Jansen is now 29-for-33 in save opportunities this season with a 3.43 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 52:16 K:BB across 44.2 innings this season.
Aug 27, 2023
Cleared to pitch Sunday
Red Sox manager Alex Cora confirmed that Jansen (hamstring) will be available out of the bullpen for Sunday's series finale with the Dodgers, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran closer had been nursing a tight right hamstring since exiting in his most recent appearance Wednesday against the Astros, but he'll be ready to take the hill Sunday if a closing situation arises after he checked out fine while throwing in a live batting practice session Saturday. Jansen has been rock-solid in his age-35 campaign, converting 29 of 32 save chances while submitting a 2.81 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 41.2 innings.
Aug 26, 2023
Ready to return
Jansen (hamstring) threw a successful live batting practice session Saturday and believes he'll be available out of the bullpen Sunday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was pulled from his outing Wednesday against the Astros with tightness in his right hamstring, but he's remained confident about avoiding the injured list. That optimism appears accurate, though the Red Sox themselves haven't officially announced when he'll be available.
Aug 25, 2023
Out a couple more days
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Friday that he'll stay away from using Jansen (hamstring) for a couple more days, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen experienced tightness in his right hamstring while making a relief appearance Wednesday against the Astros and will apparently be unavailable for at least part of Boston's three-game weekend series against the visiting Dodgers. The good news is that the veteran closer was able to throw long-toss Friday and is expected to avoid the injured list. Chris Martin and Josh Winckowski are among the fill-in options for saves.
Aug 24, 2023
Confident he can avoid IL
Jansen reported improvement with his injured right hamstring Thursday and is confident he can avoid a stint on the injured list, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen had to be lifted from Wednesday's appearance in Houston because of tightness in the hamstring, but he's feeling better after presumably receiving some treatment. The closer noted that he will see how he feels in the coming days, which would seem to indicate he could be unavailable for at least a day or two. However, at this juncture it looks like Jansen should be avoid to bypass the IL as the Red Sox fight for a playoff spot. Chris Martin might be needed in the short term should some save chances arise for Boston.
Aug 23, 2023
Battling hamstring tightness
Jansen was taken out of Wednesday's game against the Astros due to tightness in his right hamstring, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
After displaying some discomfort on the mound during the ninth inning, Jansen was taken out of the game and is now confirmed to be dealing with a hamstring issue. The severity of Jansen's injury remains unknown, but Boston will likely refrain from using him out of the bullpen for at least the next few days so he can recover.
Aug 23, 2023
Exits with injury
Jansen was pulled from Wednesday's game against Houston with an apparent injury, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen appeared uncomfortable on the mound after getting Jon Singleton to pop out in the ninth inning and was immediately removed by a trainer. The Red Sox will take a look at him and provide more details on what is bothering Jansen, but for now the 35-year-old closer should be considered day-to-day.
Aug 21, 2023
Locks down sweep
Jansen allowed one hit, hit a batter and struck out two to record the save in Sunday's 6-5 win over the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Jansen allowed a leadoff double then hit a batter to make it interesting. The seasoned right-hander struck didn't panic. He struck out Aaron Judge on three pitches, Gleyber Torres on four, then induced a flyout to lock down Boston's sweep of New York in Yankee Stadium. Jansen has converted his 20 consecutive save opportunities.
Aug 16, 2023
Grabs 28th save
Jansen picked up the save in Tuesday's 5-4 victory over the Nationals, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen improved to 28-for-31 in save chances this year. Since July 5, he's worked to a pristine 1.54 ERA over 11.2 innings. Overall, Jansen's ERA is down to 2.91 with a 1.21 WHIP and 48:15 K:BB across 40.1 innings this season.
Aug 14, 2023
Notches 27th save
Jansen picked up the save Sunday against the Tigers, working around a hit in a scoreless ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen has now gone 29 appearances without blowing a save -- he's recorded 17 saves while working to a 2.36 ERA in that span (26.2 innings). The 35-year-old right-hander is now 27-for-30 in save opportunities with a 2.97 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 47:15 K:BB across 39.1 innings this season.
Aug 11, 2023
Secures another save
Jansen earned a save against the Royals on Thursday, striking out two batters in a perfect inning of work.
ANALYSIS
Jansen threw 11 of 16 pitches for a strike while retiring the side in order in the ninth, getting a strikeout to begin and end the frame. The veteran reliever picked up his second save in as many days and boosted his season total to 26, tied for eighth in the majors. Jansen is up to 417 saves in his career, five away from Billy Wagner for sixth place all-time.
Aug 10, 2023
Notches 25th save
Jansen gave up a solo home run while walking one and striking out one in the ninth inning Wednesday to record his 25th save of the season in a 4-3 win over the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Freddy Fermin's one-out blast over the Green Monster made things nervous for Boston, but Jansen got a break after walking Edward Olivares when pinch runner Dairon Blanco got caught stealing second. It's Jansen's 16th straight successful save conversion, with his last blown save coming May 13, and he's now reached 25 for the 11th straight full season, not counting the 2020 pandemic campaign. With 416 saves for his career, Jansen is six behind Billy Wagner for sixth place on the all-time list, and eight behind John Franco for a spot in the top five.
Aug 7, 2023
Picks up win
Jansen (3-5) struck out two batters in a scoreless inning Monday. He earned a win against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Jansen fired a quick shutout frame and was given a win after the Red Sox walked off in the ninth inning. He dropped his ERA back down to 2.97 with a 44:14 K:BB after picking up his first win since June 11. Jansen has allowed one run while striking out nine over his last 7.2 frames.
Aug 2, 2023
Collects 24th save
Jansen struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Jansen had no trouble protecting a two-run lead, bouncing back after giving up a walk-off home run Saturday versus the Giants. The Boston closer has converted his last 15 save chances, and he's up to 24 saves in 27 tries this season. He's maintained a 3.06 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP and 42:14 K:BB through 35.1 innings.
Jul 29, 2023
Surrenders walk-off homer
Jansen (2-5) took the loss Saturday against the Giants. He allowed a solo home run and failed to record an out.
ANALYSIS
After the Red Sox scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game, Jansen took the mound with the opportunity to force extra innings. However, he would only throw one pitch, as J.D. Davis took him yard for a walk-off home run and handed Jansen his fifth loss of 2023. The outing broke a streak of seven consecutive scoreless appearances (5.2 innings) for Jansen and marked just his third home run given up on the season.
Jul 29, 2023
Perfect inning for save
Jansen struck out two in a perfect inning to earn the save in Friday's 3-2 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
He threw eight of nine pitches for strikes to make tidy work of the Giants' Nos. 5-7 hitters. Jansen has allowed just two hits and two walks during his 5.2-inning scoreless streak, which spans his last seven appearances. The Boston closer is up to 23 saves in 26 chances while maintaining a 2.88 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 41:14 K:BB over 34.1 innings this season.
Jul 27, 2023
Nabs 22nd save
Jansen allowed one hit and struck out one batter in a scoreless inning to earn a save against Atlanta on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Jansen hit the first batter he faced in the ninth frame to put the tying run on base, but he managed to get out of the inning unscathed with the help of catcher Connor Wong, who threw out Atlanta speedster Forrest Wall on a stolen-base attempt with one out. For Jansen, the key stat is that he recorded his 13th straight successful save, and he hasn't blown an opportunity since May 12. The veteran closer has tempted fate all season with a career-worst 1.35 WHIP, but he's still been very effective in his first season with Boston, collecting 22 saves in 25 chances and posting a 2.97 ERA over 33.1 innings.
Jul 14, 2023
Earns quick save
Jansen struck out the only batter he faced to secure a save against the Cubs on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered the game after Tayler Scott loaded the bases and struck out Mike Tauchman on three pitches to finish things off. Jansen has now converted 20 of his 23 save chances this season, including 11 straight. He lowered his ERA to 3.19 with a 37:13 K:BB through 31 frames.
Jul 9, 2023
Snares 19th save
Jansen picked up the save in Sunday's 4-3 win over Oakland. He allowed one walk while striking out one over a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
After allowing a run in three straight appearances, Jansen has fired off two straight hitless outings. He's now converted on nine straight save opportunities and ranks 10th in baseball with 19 saves. Through 32 appearances (30.2 innings), Jansen owns a 3.23 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and a 36:13 K:BB.
Jul 6, 2023
Notches 18th save
Jansen worked a perfect ninth inning Wednesday without walking or striking out a batter to record his 18th save of the season in a 4-2 win over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
The veteran closer fired eight of 11 pitches for strikes while shutting down the bottom of the Texas batting order. Jansen has converted nine straight save chances dating back to May 20, posting a 2.65 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 18:5 K:BB in 17 innings over that stretch, and he continues to climb the career saves list -- with 15 more in 2023, he would tie John Franco for fifth all-time.
Jul 3, 2023
Unavailable Sunday
Jansen was not available to pitch Sunday when Joe Jacques closed out Boston's 5-4 win over the Blue Jays, Greg Dudek of NESN reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen had pitched Saturday and escaped with a harrowing save, when he allowed three hits and a run while striking out three over 1.1 innings.
Jul 2, 2023
Narrowly records 17th save
Jansen picked up the save in Saturday's 7-6 victory over the Blue Jays. He allowed one run on three hits while striking out three over 1.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
It wasn't pretty but Jansen managed to get the job done Saturday to record his 17th save of the season. The right-handed reliever entered the game with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and got Cavan Biggio to go down on strikes. He then struck out Kevin Kiermaier to open the ninth before giving up back-to-back hits and eventually allowing one run to come home for Toronto, making it a 7-6 ballgame. Fortunately, Bo Bichette would be thrown out at home on a single from Vladimir Guerrero as Boston escaped with the win. Jansen has now allowed a run in each of his last three appearances, increasing his ERA to 3.45 on the season.
Jun 23, 2023
Converts 16th save
Jansen struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Friday's 3-1 win over the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Jansen has collected four saves and a win during his seven-inning scoreless streak over his last seven appearances. He's given up zero baserunners in five of those outings for one of his most dominant stretches of the season. Jansen is up to 16 saves with a 2.81 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 30:12 K:BB through 25.2 innings overall.
Jun 18, 2023
Locks down save
Jansen allowed a hit in a scoreless inning Sunday, striking out two and earning a save against the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Jansen allowed a two-out single but still finished off the 4-1 win on 13 pitches (11 strikes). The veteran closer has converted six straight save chances since blowing two consecutive opportunities May 12 and 13. He's allowed just two runs in 11 appearances since then, lowering his season ERA to 3.04 with a 28:12 K:BB.
Jun 10, 2023
Earns 14th save
Jansen picked up the save in Friday's 3-2 victory over the Yankees. He allowed two hits and zero walks while striking out one over a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen made things quite interesting after getting two quick outs, allowing back-to-back singles before getting Anthony Volpe to fly out and end the game. The veteran right-hander has been spectacular so far on the road this season, striking out 12 batters in 11.2 innings while not allowing a run. Jansen has settled down after hitting a bit of a rough patch, allowing just two runs over his last seven appearances.
Jun 8, 2023
Okay after grabbing knee
Jansen grabbed his knee during Tuesday's outing, but manager Alex Cora downplayed the issue, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen pitched through the issue to record his 13th save. "Age, man. Age," Cora joked about the 35-year-old. "He's OK. He was getting treatment." Boston's closer was available for Wednesday's game.
Jun 7, 2023
Nails down 13th save
Jansen struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Tuesday to record his 13th save of the season in a 5-4 win over the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
After working both ends of Saturday's doubleheader, Jansen was able to get a couple days off before his next appearance and looked refreshed, topping out at 96.7 mph with his cutter while firing nine of 13 pitches for strikes. The veteran closer has been scored upon only once in his last seven games, but his 25.8 percent strikeout rate and 13.5 percent walk rate on the season would be the worst marks of his career if they don't improve.
Jun 4, 2023
Bumpy day in twin bill
Jansen (1-3) gave up a hit and struck out the side in a scoreless ninth inning during the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, recording his 12th save of the season, but he then gave up two runs on three hits and a walk in the second game to get tagged with the loss.
ANALYSIS
All told, the veteran closer tossed 43 pitches (26 strikes) across both games, so Jansen will likely be unavailable for a couple days to recuperate should Boston have any late leads to protect. The right-hander has been a solid addition to the Red Sox bullpen this season, posting a 3.86 ERA and 22:12 K:BB through 18.2 innings while converting 12 of 15 save chances, but the team's lack of reliable high-leverage options to support him is beginning to take its toll -- Jansen's allowed multiple runs in three of his last eight appearances.
May 28, 2023
Notches save Saturday
Jansen earned a save against the Diamondbacks on Saturday, striking out one batter in a perfect inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen got the call to protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning and retired Arizona in order on 13 pitches. The veteran closer posted his third straight scoreless outing -- two of which have resulted in a save -- following a troubling pair of appearances in mid-May during which he blew two saves and allowed six runs (five earned) across one inning. Those two blowups have Jansen's ERA at 3.45 on the campaign, but he's kept the opponent off the scoreboard in 14 of his 17 outings overall.
May 21, 2023
Records 10th save
Jansen walked two and struck out none in a scoreless and hitless inning to earn the save in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Jansen made things a bit interesting with lackluster control, but he was able to work out of his own mess. He hadn't pitched in a week since taking a pair of blown saves versus the Cardinals last weekend. The 35-year-old closer is at a 3.95 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 17:9 K:BB through 13.2 innings this season while converting 10 of his 13 save chances. He's had some trouble adjusting to the pitch clock, and it's showing up in his elevated walk rate, but the Red Sox have yet to consider turning to a closing committee.
May 14, 2023
Charged with clock violations
Jansen was charged with three pitch-clock violations (one warning) during the ninth inning of Saturday's 4-3 loss to St. Louis.
ANALYSIS
The violations contributed to Jansen blowing his second save in as many days. One of those violations resulted in ball four and put runners on first and second with none out. Jansen started his move to home plate before Willson Contreras, who was waiting for the clock to get to eight seconds, had his second foot in the box, per Ian Browne of MLB.com. "That's nothing against them, but I have to take advantage of the clock a little bit, especially in those situations where we're looking to create a rally," Contreras explained. "He's been struggling since last night throwing strikes, so I was just getting him upset a little bit, and it was nothing disrespectful." Jansen, who threw just eight strikes among his 17 pitches, vowed to learn from the experience.
May 14, 2023
Blows another save
Jansen (1-2) blew the save and took the loss Saturday against the Cardinals. He allowed three runs on one hit and three walks while striking out zero over one inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen failed to convert a save opportunity for the second straight game, giving up three runs and three walks in the top of the ninth after Chris Sale handed him a 3-1 lead. The typically reliable closer has been off his game recently, giving up six runs over his last two appearances, and blowing three of his last six save chances. However, given his pedigree and track record of ninth inning success, Jansen's job appears to be safe, though the Red Sox could give other relievers some closing looks if his struggles continue.
May 12, 2023
Crumbles in ninth
Jansen (1-1) allowed three runs on three hits and a walk in Friday's loss to St. Louis. He was charged with a blown save and did not record an out.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered the ninth inning with a 6-5 lead and the Cardinals jumped on him immediately. After Lars Nootbaar tied the game with an RBI single, Jansen served up a go-ahead, two-run shot to Nolan Gorman. Jansen had allowed just one run through 11.2 innings before Friday's meltdown caused his ERA to jump to 3.09. After converting his first six save chances, he's blown two of his last five.
May 10, 2023
Secures 400th career save
Jansen allowed a hit and struck out one in one inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 5-2 win over Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Jansen reached the 400-save mark for his career by successfully protecting a three-run lead Wednesday. It was his ninth save in 10 chances this season. The right-hander's been charged with a run only once in 12 outings, which came in a blown save versus the Guardians on April 29. Jansen owns a 0.77 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 17:3 K:BB over 11.2 innings this season.
May 7, 2023
Collects 399th career save
Jansen allowed one hit and struck out one batter in a scoreless inning against the Phillies on Saturday to earn a save.
ANALYSIS
Jansen appears to be past a back injury that sidelined him late last week and into the beginning of this week, as he pitched for the second straight day Saturday. The veteran closer was sharp against Philadelphia, throwing 11 of 14 pitches for a strike and allowing just an infield single. Jansen has been dominant in his first season with Boston, allowing just one earned run and posting a 16:4 K:BB over 10.2 innings while converting eight of nine save chances. He's now at 399 saves for his career -- with his next one, he'll become the seventh pitcher in MLB history to reach 400.
May 6, 2023
Strikes out side in ninth
Jansen picked up the save in Friday's 5-3 victory over Philadelphia, tossing a scoreless ninth in which he allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered with a two-run lead and struck out Bryson Stott to begin the frame before giving up a single to Edmundo Sosa and walking Brandon Marsh. After allowing the tying run to reach base, the veteran locked in and got Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner to strike out swinging to end the game. It was Jansen's first appearance since blowing a save April 29 versus Cleveland, and he is now 7-for-8 in save chances while sporting a 0.93 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and a 15:3 K:BB through 10 appearances (9.2 innings).
May 4, 2023
Available to pitch Thursday
Jansen (back) is available out of the Red Sox' bullpen for Thursday's game versus the Blue Jays, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen hasn't pitched since Saturday due to back tightness, but he made it through a bullpen session Wednesday with no issues and is ready to roll. The veteran closer has six saves and a 1.04 ERA on the season.
May 3, 2023
Throwing bullpen session
Jansen (back) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
It would presumably rule Jansen out from being available to pitch Wednesday versus the Blue Jays, but if it goes well he should be ready to pitch in a day or two. Jansen hasn't pitched since Saturday due to back tightness.
May 2, 2023
Unavailable Tuesday
Jansen (back) is not expected to be available to pitch Tuesday versus the Blue Jays, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
ANALYSIS
Red Sox manager Alex Cora had indicated that Jansen was available to pitch Monday, but that apparently wasn't the case and he's expected to be off limits Tuesday, too. The closer hasn't pitched since Saturday due to back tightness. Chris Martin or John Schreiber could see a save chance if one presents itself Tuesday.
May 1, 2023
Cleared for Monday
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said prior to Monday's game against the Blue Jays that Jansen (back) will be available out of the bullpen, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen wasn't an option out of the bullpen for Sunday's 7-1 win over Cleveland after he experienced back tightness in his appearance one night earlier, but the lone day off was apparently all the right-hander needed to overcome the injury. The 35-year-old right-hander has looked sharp over his first nine appearances out of the Boston bullpen, striking out 12 and allowing just one run over 8.2 innings while converting six of seven save chances.
Apr 30, 2023
Unavailable Sunday
Jansen will not be available to pitch Sunday due to back tightness, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen pitched through a back issue he felt crop up prior to Saturday's game and was visited by training staff during the ninth inning. "He'll be down tomorrow," Boston manager Alex Cora said. "Hopefully, he'll be back on Monday." If a save situation arises Sunday, Cora could use lefty Richard Bleier or righty John Schreiber.
Apr 29, 2023
Felt back tightness in ninth
Jansen was visited by trainers due to back stiffness in his appearance against the Guardians on Saturday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. He allowed one run on three hits while blowing his first save of the season with no walks and a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was visited by the trainers in the ninth inning, and while he was able to continue in the outing, it clearly was bothering the right-hander. Jansen threw 29 pitches in his outing against the Guardians on Saturday, so he likely won't be an option for the Boston bullpen regardless of how his back feels. It's obviously a situation to keep an eye on for those who roster Jansen in fantasy formats.
Apr 26, 2023
Notches sixth save
Jansen picked up his sixth save of the season in Tuesday's 8-6 win over the Orioles, recording the final two outs in the ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
The Red Sox came into the final frame with an 8-1 lead, but after Kaleb Ort made a mess of things, Jansen had to come in and put out the fire. The veteran closer is a perfect 6-for-6 in converting save chances to begin the year and he has yet to allow a run in 7.2 innings with an 11:2 K:BB, and Jansen's cutter is even averaging a career-high 94.8 mph. Despite offseason concerns about declining performance, it appears the 35-year-old has plenty left in the tank as he marches toward 400 career saves.
Apr 22, 2023
Converts fifth save
Jansen picked up the save in Friday's 5-3 victory over the Brewers. He didn't allow a hit or a walk while picking up two strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Jansen is off to an incredible start in 2023. He has not allowed a run in seven innings and has five saves and one win in his seven outings. Jansen fanned the first two hitters he faced Friday and now has a 11:2 K:BB ratio and a sparkling 0.86 WHIP on the season.
Apr 15, 2023
Pitches perfect ninth
Jansen picked up the save during Saturday's 9-7 win over the Angels, tossing a perfect ninth inning with zero strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Jansen came on with a two-run lead and retired Anthony Rendon, Hunter Renfroe and Gio Urshela in order. The right-hander has now converted four consecutive save opportunities and has yet to allow a run over five appearances.
Apr 15, 2023
Strikes out side in ninth
Jansen picked up the save in Friday's 5-3 win over the Angels, allowing one hit and striking out three during a scoreless ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen came on with a two-run lead and struck out Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani before surrendering a two-out single to Anthony Rendon. The veteran right-hander proceeded to strikeout Hunter Renfroe to end the game and earned his third save of the season. Jansen has allowed zero runs on three hits and two walks while striking out seven through four appearances.
Apr 9, 2023
Picks up another save
Jansen picked up the save in Sunday's 4-1 win over the Tigers. He allowed two hits and one walk while striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered Sunday's matchup with the Red Sox holding a three-run lead in the ninth inning, but he got into a bases-loaded jam with one out. However, he forced a flyout before recording a strikeout to end the game and pick up his second save of the year. The Red Sox aren't predicted to be especially strong this season, but Jansen should have plenty of job security as the team's closer.

Tallies first save
Jansen didn't allow a hit or run in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Thursday against the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was called upon to protect a three-run lead, and he got little resistance to record his first save of the season. It was his first appearance since Saturday, when he allowed two baserunners but escaped with a scoreless outing and a win. Though Jansen has lost some dominance in recent seasons, he should comfortably serve as Boston's closer for the entire season.

Picks up win vs. BAL
Jansen picked up a win with a scoreless ninth inning against the Orioles on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Jansen came in to pitch in a game that Boston trailed 8-7, so it was unlikely he was going to factor into the decision. The Red Sox were able to score twice in the bottom of the frame after his scoreless frame, however, so he gets his first win as a member of the club. The right-hander struck out two while allowing a hit and a walk. His first chance for a save with the Red Sox should come soon.

Returns to mound Monday
Jansen (illness) made a scoreless appearance Monday versus Atlanta during Grapefruit League play during his return to action.
ANALYSIS
Jansen loaded the bases on a hit and a couple walks but was able to escape unscathed by inducing an inning-ending double-play ball. The closer had exited his previous appearance due to lightheadedness, but he's fine now and will be ready to roll on Opening Day.
Mar 26, 2023
Expected to pitch Monday
Jansen (illness) is expected to pitch Monday against Atlanta, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was removed from Friday's Grapefruit League appearance after experiencing lightheadedness and dizzy spells, but he's back at the ballpark before Sunday's Grapefruit League finale. The right-hander looks to be ready for Opening Day, and should be called on for save chances to begin the 2023 campaign.
Mar 25, 2023
Feeling better Saturday
Jansen (lightheadedness) said he expects to pitch in Sunday's Grapefruit League game, Sean McAdam of BostonSportsJournal.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He left Friday's exhibition game with a trainer after feeling lightheaded, but Jansen reported improvement Saturday and said he does not believe the issue is related to his heart condition (atrial fibrillation). The longtime closer suggested it may have just been dehydration, per Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican. So long as Jansen returns Sunday or early next week, he should be in the clear for Opening Day.
Mar 24, 2023
Felt lightheaded before exit
Red Sox manager told reporters that Jansen felt "lightheaded" before leaving Friday's appearance against Atlanta, but he should be fine going forward, Tom Caron of NESN reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen left Friday's appearance with a trainer, and he immediately went to the Boston clubhouse. Fortunately this appears to be precautionary with Cora believing that the right-hander should be ok going forward. Jansen may be held out of action for the coming days, but it appears that he should be just fine for the regular season.
Mar 24, 2023
Leaves game with trainer
Jansen left Friday's Grapefruit League appearance against Atlanta with a trainer, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen went directly into the clubhouse after exiting the appearance. The right-hander is likely to undergo testing, and there should be an update on his status before the end of Friday's game. This would be a significant loss for Boston after they signed Jansen to serve as the closer for the 2023 season.
Mar 9, 2023
Throws live batting practice
Jansen (illness) threw 17 pitches to live hitters Thursday in Red Sox camp, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen missed a scheduled Grapefruit League appearance earlier this week because he wasn't feeling well, but he's scheduled to return to exhibition action Saturday and could join Team Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic if they advance out of their group. The veteran reliever is slated to serve as Boston's primary closer in 2023.
Mar 7, 2023
Could join WBC in quarterfinals
Jansen is expected to join Team Netherlands in the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic if the club advances, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen is still in spring training with Boston, and just made his spring debut with the Red Sox on Monday. The long-time closer will remain in Florida as an option for the Grapefruit League, but could be a late-inning option in the WBC if Team Netherlands advances. Jansen is coming off a 2022 campaign where he finished with 41 saves along with a 3.38 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 64 innings in 65 appearances.
Mar 6, 2023
Makes spring debut
Jansen pitched a scoreless inning in Saturday's spring game against the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Jansen made quick work of the Astros in his Grapefruit League debut, setting down the side order. Most notably, he easily beat the pitch clock on fall 14 of this pitches, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com. Jansen is notorious for his slow pace, averaging 25.6 seconds between pitches with the bases empty and 31.4 seconds with runners on last season. He vowed the new pitch clock would not be an issue for him, saying he's been working on it since December. The right-hander noted that his slow pace was a product of the environment and throwing in high-pressurized situations. The real test for Boston's closer comes during the regular season when those high-pressure situations become the norm.
Feb 20, 2023
Throws bullpen with timer
Jansen threw a bullpen session Sunday and was on time in his delivery, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen is one of the slowest pitchers in the league, so he'll have to adjust to the new rule that pitchers must begin their delivery within 15 seconds with the bases empty (20 second with runners on). He had the third slowest tempo (25.6 seconds) between pitchers last year.
Feb 15, 2023
Behind due to offseason illness
Jansen is a bit behind in Red Sox camp due to an offseason illness, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen had to put a pause on his winter workouts because he and his family got sick. But there is plenty of time for the veteran reliever to play catch-up and to be at or near 100 percent come Opening Day. He inked a two-year, $32 million free-agent contract with Boston in December and projects to serve as the club's primary closer in 2023.
Dec 13, 2022
Contract with Boston official
Jansen's two-year, $32 million contract with the Red Sox was formally announced by the team Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The deal was first reported last week and Jansen was officially introduced at a press conference Tuesday. The longtime closer will slide into the ninth inning for Boston, with the hope that he'll provide more stability than the club had in 2022.
Dec 7, 2022
Catches on with Boston
Jansen and the Red Sox agreed Wednesday on a two-year, $32 million contract, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Even though the 35-year-old Jansen is on the downslope of his career, he remained a solid closer in 2022 with Atlanta, converting 41 of 48 save chances while posting a 3.38 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 85:22 K:BB in 64 innings. He'll now add some stability to the back end of the Boston bullpen, after the Red Sox had mostly taken a committee approach to the ninth inning last season. Jansen's contract and ample experience as a closer -- he'll enter 2023 with 391 career saves -- means he should have a decent amount of leash as Boston's ninth-inning man even if he endures some early struggles.

Notches 41st save
Jansen pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out two batters on his way to a save in Tuesday's 2-1 victory against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Tasked with protecting a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, Jansen retired the Marlins in order while striking out two batters. The save was his 41st of the campaign and the closer has now converted eight straight save opportunities. Since Sept. 13, Jansen has posted a 0.82 ERA and 0.55 WHIP with 16 strikeouts over 11 innings in 11 appearances while going 8-for-8 on save chances.
Oct 2, 2022
Notches third save of weekend
Jansen saved Sunday's 5-3 win against the Mets, tossing a perfect ninth inning while failing to record a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
With Atlanta possessing a tight lead over their divisional rivals for the third straight night, manager Brian Snitker turned to Jansen who once again delivered. The 35-year-old recorded three quick outs on seven pitches -- all of them strikes -- and has now converted seven straight save opportunities, permitting just one earned run while striking out 14 during the 10 inning stretch. Jansen reached 40 saves for the fourth time in his career and first since 2017, while he ranks one behind Emmanual Clase for the MLB lead.
Oct 2, 2022
Strikes out two for save
Jansen picked up the save Saturday against the Mets, allowing no runs on no hits while striking out two and walking none over one inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen now has saves in back-to-back appearances and in six of his last eight appearances. The veteran is one save shy of tying Emmanuel Clase for the most in baseball. Jansen needed just 11 pitches to finish out the game Saturday, lowering his ERA to 3.48 in the process.
Oct 1, 2022
Strikes out three for save
Jansen picked up the save Friday against the Mets, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out three and walking one over one inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen picked up his 38th save Friday, the second most saves in baseball this season. He allowed two baserunners and needed 24 pitches, 15 of which were strikes, to get the job done. After allowing two runs in an outing on Sep. 11 that ballooned his ERA to 3.91, the veteran has steadily lowered it to where it sits now at 3.54.
Sep 25, 2022
Earns 37th save
Jansen did not allow a baserunner and struck out one over a scoreless inning of work to earn the save in a 6-3 victory over the Phillies on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
It was business as usual for Jansen, who made quick work of the Phillies on twelve pitches, ten of which he threw for strikes. He ended the game emphatically with a high heater that caused Bryson Stott to go around with an off-balance swing. Jansen now has 27 saves, second most in all of MLB behind only Emmanuel Clase.
Sep 20, 2022
Holds on for 36th save
Jansen earned a save after he pitched one inning, surrendering an unearned run on two hits and a walk while striking out two in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was called upon to protect a 3-1 lead in the top of the ninth, but quickly ran into trouble. The first two batters he faced reached base before he registered two strikeouts in a row, but a two-out Luis Garcia singled scored a run. After an intentional walk to Joey Meneses, Jansen was able to get Luke Voit to fly out to end the contest, earning his 36th save of the year. The 34-year-old has now pitched four straight scoreless appearances after he blew a save and got the loss Sept. 11 against the Mariners. Jansen now owns a 3.63 ERA and 1.11 WHIP with 75 punchouts over 57 innings in 58 appearances while going 36-for-43 on save opportunities this year.
Sep 20, 2022
Notches 35th save
Jansen struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Monday to record his 35th save of the season in a 5-2 win over the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
There has been chatter recently that Raisel Iglesias might bump Jansen from his closer role, but as yet that hasn't come to pass as Iglesias worked the eighth Monday and collected his 11th hold, while Jansen reeled in his second straight save and fifth in seven September chances. The 34-year-old's 3.68 ERA on the month might be fueling the speculation, but it comes with a 0.82 WHIP and 8:1 K:BB through 7.1 innings. With Atlanta hot on the heels of the Mets for the NL East title, it might take a total meltdown from Jansen for him to lose his grip on the ninth.
Sep 18, 2022
Sharp in 34th save
Jansen struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was reportedly unavailable with a finger issue Friday, but he was deemed good-to-go ahead of Saturday's contest. A save chance arose, and he needed just nine pitches (seven strikes) to convert it. This was his first save since he blew a chance in Seattle last Sunday. Jansen now has a 3.76 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 72:19 K:BB through 55 innings while converting 34 of 41 save chances. Assuming the finger soreness doesn't resurface, he should remain Atlanta's primary closer the rest of the way.
Sep 17, 2022
Available despite finger issue
Jansen was unavailable Friday against the Phillies due to a sore right pinky finger but is available Saturday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Atlanta didn't wind up with a save chance Friday, as a six-run eighth inning game the team a 7-2 leading heading into the ninth inning. Raisel Iglesias handled that final frame, but Jansen should be available in the event of a save chance Saturday.
Sep 11, 2022
Takes loss, blown save
Jansen (5-2) took the loss and blown save during Sunday's 6-5 defeat at the hands of the Mariners, allowing two runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen's services were necessitated after Atlanta rallied five runs in the top of the ninth, but he served up solo shots to Julio Rodriguez and Eugenio Suarez to suffer his third blown save and second loss in his last seven appearances. During that stretch, the 34-year-old has surrendered seven runs in 5.2 innings to increase his season ERA from 3.04 to 3.91. Despite a league-leading 33 saves, Jansen's seven blown saves are tied for second-most in MLB.
Sep 10, 2022
Regains saves lead
Jansen saved Friday's 6-4 win against the Mariners, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen made quick work of the bottom of Seattle's lineup to record his MLB-leading 33rd save. The 34-year-old has now recorded two scoreless outings following a pair of recent poor marks and possesses 3.61 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 52.1 innings across 53 appearances.
Sep 7, 2022
Tosses perfect ninth for save
Jansen pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out two batters on his way to a save in Tuesday's 10-9 win over the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was called upon to protect Atlanta's 10-9 lead in the bottom of the ninth frame, producing a one-two-three inning while registering two punchouts. He has now converted 32 out of 38 save opportunities this season. After a rough stretch from late August to early September, Jansen has now pitched back-to-back perfect innings in his last two appearances.
Sep 4, 2022
Can't complete save
Jansen blew the save during Saturday's 2-1 win against the Marlins, allowing one run on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered in the ninth inning to protect a 1-0 lead and immediately faltered, surrendering three straight baserunners prior to recording an out. A Jerar Encarnacion sacrifice fly brought in the tying run and the 34-year-old recorded an additional out before he was removed following a lengthy delay due to an injury to the home plate umpire. Jansen has now surrendered five runs in three innings across his last four appearances and has suffered two blown saves in the process, increasing his ERA from 3.04 to 3.75.
Sep 2, 2022
Rebounds with smooth save
Jansen pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn a save against the Rockies on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered Thursday having allowed two runs in each of his previous two outings, but Atlanta manager Brian Snitker didn't hesitate to go to him again with his team up by three runs in the ninth inning. This time Jansen breezed through a scoreless frame, needing just eight pitches to set the side down in order. The veteran closer hasn't always inspired confidence this season and has posted an unappetizing 3.62 ERA, but he leads the majors with 31 saves in 36 attempts.
Sep 1, 2022
Hangs on for 30th save
Jansen notched a save against the Rockies on Wednesday, allowing two runs on one hit and one walk while striking out one batter in one inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen came on in the ninth inning with Atlanta holding a 3-0 lead. The veteran closer made things interesting by serving up a two-out walk followed by Michael Toglia's first major-league homer, but he was able to get the final out to seal the save. Jansen began August by allowing only one run over his first eight innings, but he finished the month by yielding four runs over his final 1.1 frames. Despite the recent rough outings, Atlanta manager Brian Snitker indicated faith in Jansen following the game, saying, "I'm not worried about him. He bounced back after a tough outing and got a save," per David O'Brien of The Athletic.
Aug 28, 2022
Handed blown save, loss
Jansen (5-1) took the loss and blown save during Saturday's 6-5 loss to St. Louis, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks while recording one out.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was called upon to protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning and faltered, inducing a Laars Nootbaar groundout before surrendering five straight baserunners and two runs to be saddled with the loss and blown save. The 34-year-old had converted nine consecutive save opportunities prior to Saturday's blunder and possessed a 1.13 ERA in eight August innings before the hiccup. Jansen owns a 3.40 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 64 strikeouts in 47.2 innings across 48 appearances with a second-best 29 saves.
Aug 22, 2022
Records 29th Save
Jansen picked up the save Monday against Pittsburgh. He struck out two in a perfect inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen had little trouble to record his 29th save as he needed just 11 pitches to shut down the Pirates in order and secure Atlanta's victory. The veteran is now tied with Josh Hader and Taylor Rogers for the MLB lead in saves. His two strikeouts on the night also improve his K/9 which was his second highest since 2018 at 12.04 entering Monday.
Aug 19, 2022
Records 28th save
Jansen earned the save over the Mets on Thursday, allowing one hit and striking out one batter in one inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was handed the ball in the ninth inning and asked to protect a one-run lead. He allowed a leadoff single to Francisco Lindor but was able to keep New York from tying the game. Jansen has earned a save in each of his past four appearances, tossing four scoreless innings and registering four strikeouts over that stretch. He's tied for second in the majors with 28 saves on the campaign.
Aug 14, 2022
Locks down save
Jansen allowed a hit and struck out one during a scoreless inning and earned a save over Miami on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Jansen fired three shutout frames and earned three saves during the four-game set against the Marlins. He's now converted 27 of his 31 chances on the year while registering a 3.25 ERA through 44.1 frames. The veteran righty has secured seven saves while posting a 2.31 ERA since his last blown save June 26.
Aug 14, 2022
Tallies 26th save
Jansen walked one but threw a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was called upon to protect a three-run lead and worked around a two-out walk to record his 26th save of the season. He has allowed at least one earned run in five of his last 14 appearances, good for a 3.95 ERA. Overall, Jansen has a 3.32 ERA and 58:15 K:BB across 43.1 innings this season and has shown no signs of losing his grip on the closer role in Atlanta.
Aug 6, 2022
Works in non-save situation
Jansen allowed one run and struck out one batter in one inning during Friday's 9-6 win over the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Jansen made his first appearance of the month and coughed up a solo shot to Jeff McNeil. The veteran closer hasn't earned a save since July 29 and he saw his ERA climb to 3.57 through 40 appearances. As expected, Jansen is still the team's top closing option with the newly-acquired Raisel Iglesias working the eighth inning Friday.
Jul 31, 2022
Picks up win in return
Jansen (5-0) earned the victory Sunday, striking out a batter in one inning while walking one in a 1-0 win over Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Jansen (back) entered a scoreless tie in the top of the ninth inning and Atlanta walked it off in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win for the closer. Jansen was unavailable Saturday after feeling a twinge in his back Friday but was feeling well enough Sunday to enter a tied game in the ninth. Since returning from a stint on the injured list with an irregular heartbeat, he's 4-for-4 in save chances and has allowed two runs in 6.2 innings while striking out seven.
Jul 30, 2022
Unavailable Saturday
Jansen is unavailable for Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks due to a back injury, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen felt a twinge in his back during Friday's relief appearance, and he'll rest for at least one game. However, his injury isn't considered significant, so he should be considered day-to-day. If Atlanta encounters a save situation Saturday, A.J. Minter and Will Smith will likely be the top options to fill in as the closer.
Jul 30, 2022
Secures 24th save
Jansen earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning during Friday's 5-2 win against Arizona. He allowed one hit with three strikeouts and two walks.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander surrendered a leadoff triple, struck out the next two batters and then issued two walks before striking out Jordan Luplow to end the game. It certainly wasn't a clean appearance, but Jansen still got the job done to record his 24th save, which ranks third in the majors. Since returning from the injured list in mid-July, he's given up two earned runs on five hits with a 6:2 K:BB over 5.2 innings while going 4-for-4 in save opportunities.
Jul 27, 2022
Nails down 23rd save
Jansen retired the only two batters he faced to record his 23rd save of the season in Tuesday's 6-3 win over the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
The Atlanta closer looked like he would get the night off when the team took a 6-1 lead into the ninth inning, but another implosion from Will Smith forced Jansen into action. The long-time Dodger has converted 11 of 12 save chances since the beginning of June, posting a 3.45 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and sharp 20:0 K:BB through 15.2 innings over that stretch.
Jul 16, 2022
Notches 22nd save
Jansen logged the save during Saturday's 6-3 win against the Nationals, submitting a perfect ninth inning on 10 pitches.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered in the ninth inning to protect a three-run lead and made quick work of the heart of Washington's lineup en route to his 22nd save. In three appearances since returning from the IL, the 34-year-old has surrendered one run in three innings and possesses a 3.53 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 49 strikeouts in 35.2 innings.
Jul 14, 2022
Shaky, earns save
Jansen picked up the save Thursday in Washington, allowing a run on two hits while striking out two in the ninth inning of a 5-4 victory.
ANALYSIS
After striking out the first batter he faced, Jansen gave up a solo homer to Maikel Franco. With a runner on second and two outs, he fanned Josh Bell after running the count full to end the game. It was his 21st save and first since returning from the injured list with an irregular heartbeat. While his 3.63 ERA leaves something to be desired for a closer on a likely playoff team, his 49:8 K:BB, 0.95 WHIP and .195 batting average against suggest the veteran may have been somewhat unlucky in the first half of the season.
Jul 13, 2022
Makes return from IL
Atlanta reinstated Jansen (chest) from the 15-day injured list ahead of Wednesday's series finale with the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Fellow reliever Darren O'Day (calf) was moved to the IL to clear space on the 26-man active roster for Jansen, who had been on the shelf since June 28 after experiencing an irregular heartbeat. The cardiac issue has popped up at various points during Jansen's career, but doctors cleared him to continue throwing during his recent stint on the IL. According to Mark Bowman of MLB.com, manager Brian Snitker said Atlanta initially planned to activate Jansen on Tuesday when he was first eligible, but the team had to wait an additional day to make the move because Jansen had to use blood thinners for 15 days to treat the irregular heartbeat. Since he wasn't shut down from throwing while he was sidelined, Jansen will likely step back into the closer's role right away, resulting in A.J. Minter and Will Smith losing fantasy value as their transition into full-time setup roles.
Jul 12, 2022
Set to return Wednesday
Jansen (chest) is expected to be activated from the injured list Wednesday, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
ANALYSIS
The bullpen session Jansen threw Monday must have gone off without a hitch, as it appears Tuesday will be the final day he spends off the active roster. Given that he will have missed just one day more than the 15 days required by his placement on the injured list, he figures to immediately reclaim the closer's duties for Atlanta.
Jul 11, 2022
Throwing bullpen Monday
Jansen (chest) threw a bullpen Monday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen expected to be activated from the injured list Tuesday, but he'll presumably need to wait at least one more day before he rejoins Atlanta's bullpen. Although he's unlikely to return Tuesday, he's made strong progress in his recovery recently and should be back in action in the coming days.
Jul 4, 2022
Targeting July 12 return
Jansen (chest) expects to be activated from the injured list July 12, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen is not eligible to come off the injured list until the 12th day of July, but he is planning to rejoin Atlanta's bullpen the first day he is able to. According to the report, Jansen "has been doing full workouts," which is certainly encouraging given that he is dealing with an irregular heartbeat.
Jun 28, 2022
Team hopeful for brief IL stint
Jansen will still be able to throw bullpen sessions even after landing on the 15-day injured list Tuesday due to an irregular heartbeat, leaving Atlanta optimistic that he'll be ready to return around the minimum amount of time, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was first diagnosed with the irregular heartbeat in 2011 and missed time that season, as well as during the 2012 and 2018 campaigns after experiencing recurrences of the cardiac issue. When he was most recently sidelined with an irregular heartbeat in 2018, Jansen missed the minimum amount of time when MLB had a 10-day IL in place, and since he'll be able to keep throwing while he's on the shelf, Atlanta is hopeful the 34-year-old has a similarly brief absence this time around. While Jansen is out, Atlanta will likely turn to either A.J. Minter or Will Smith for save situations.
Jun 28, 2022
Sidelined with cardiac issue
Atlanta placed Jansen on the 15-day injured list Tuesday due to an irregular heartbeat.
ANALYSIS
The cardiac concerns aren't anything new for Jansen, who was first diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat in 2011. He ended up missing time that season and was also sidelined for periods of time in 2012 and 2018 after suffering recurrences of the irregular heartbeat. After undergoing a heart ablation procedure following the 2018 campaign, Jansen hadn't experienced any setbacks in three-plus years since before heading to the IL on Tuesday. Given Jansen's medical history, he'll likely need to pass a battery of tests from doctors before he's cleared to pitch again for Atlanta, leaving him without a clear timeline to return from the IL. Will Smith, who has scooped up two saves across 32 appearances this season, is presumably first in line to close for Atlanta while Jansen is sidelined.

Blows save against former team
Jansen allowed two runs on three hits and struck out two in one inning, taking a blown save Sunday versus the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Jansen converted saves in each of his first two outings against the Dodgers this year, but the third time saw his old team get revenge. Sunday marked just the third time he's allowed multiple runs in an appearance. Jansen is now 20-for-24 in save chances with a 3.58 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 47:8 K:BB through 32.2 innings this year. His other three blown saves all came in the final two weeks of May, but he was able to shake off that slump without it snowballing into something worse -- he'll look to do the same going forward.
Jun 26, 2022
Halts former team for 20th save
Jansen picked up the save against the Dodgers on Saturday, striking out all three batters he faced in a perfect ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen pitched for Los Angeles for the first 12 seasons of his major-league career, so he may have had extra motivation to do well Saturday. Whatever the case, the closer looked overpowering in his outing, striking out Cody Bellinger, Max Muncy and Trea Turner on 14 pitches. Jansen has been rock solid in June, posting a 1.80 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and 15:0 K:BB across 10 innings while converting all eight of his save chances and adding one win.
Jun 23, 2022
Tallies 19th save
Jansen allowed a solo home run and struck out one to earn his 19th save of the season Thursday against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered the game with a two-run lead and retired the first two batters he faced without incident. He coughed up a solo home run to Joc Pederson but was still able to secure his 18th save of the season. Jansen has allowed only two earned runs across nine innings in June, also maintaining a 12:0 K:BB.
Jun 12, 2022
Locks down save
Jansen allowed one hit over a scoreless inning Sunday, striking out one and earning a save over the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
After giving up a leadoff single to Daniel Vogelbach, Jansen retired three straight batters to preserve the 5-3 win. He's now converted six straight save chances and eight of his last nine. The 34-year-old lowered his season ERA to 3.25 with 18 saves across 27 appearances.
Jun 10, 2022
Notches 17th save
Jansen struck out one batter in a perfect ninth inning to earn a save over the Pirates on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Jansen tossed just six of his 12 pitches for strikes Friday but he quickly retired the Pirates in order to finish off the 4-2 win. He's converted five straight saves, making his 17 for 20 on the year. The veteran righty now owns a 3.38 ERA with a 37:8 K:BB through 26.2 frames.
Jun 10, 2022
Earns 16th save
Jansen picked up the save Thursday against the Pirates. He allowed zero runs on zero hits and zero walks while striking out two over one inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered with a two-run lead in the ninth and pitched a perfect inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced. The veteran reliever has 16 saves in 19 opportunities and sports a 36:8 K:BB across his first 25.2 innings with Atlanta.

Jansen gave up a hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his 11th save of the season in a 6-4 win over the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
After getting tagged for runs in three straight appearances and blowing his first two save chances of the season, Jansen appeared to be back in his usual form Friday. Through 19.2 innings on the year, he sports a 3.66 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 27:6 K:BB, and as yet there's no reason to think his hold on the closer role for Atlanta is slipping.

Earns shaky save
Jansen picked up the save against the Marlins on Friday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out three across one inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was summoned in the ninth inning with Atlanta holding a two-run lead, and he struck out the first two batters he faced. Things turned sour quickly for the veteran, however, as a walk, single and double netted one run for Miami and put the tying run on third base. Jansen was then able to recollect himself and strike out Jorge Soler to end the threat. Though Jansen has allowed a run in each of his past two outings, he has been one of the NL's top closers overall this season, converting 10 of 11 save opportunities and posting a 25:5 K:BB over 17.2 innings.
May 18, 2022

ANALYSIS
The veteran closer entered the game in the ninth inning with Atlanta holding a 4-3 lead, but an RBI triple by Kolten Wong sent the game to extras. Jansen was tagged for a run for only the second time in his last 15 appearances, but fatigue may have been a factor -- he's pitched on two straight days and four of the last five, although Atlanta does have a scheduled off day Thursday. On the season, Jansen sports a 2.70 ERA and 22:4 K:BB through 16.2 innings.

ANALYSIS
Jansen hasn't recorded a save since last Saturday but has now chipped in with two wins this week. ANALYSIS
The long-time Dodgers closer hasn't missed a beat since signing with Atlanta in the offseason. Jansen is a perfect 6-for-6 on save chances to begin the year with a 37.5 percent strikeout rate that would be his highest mark since 2017 if he can keep it up.
Apr 27, 2022
Collects fifth save
jansen struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Tuesday to record his fifth save of the season in a 3-1 win over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
The veteran closer had a shaky first appearance for Atlanta, but since then Jansen has delivered six straight scoreless outings with a 9:0 K:BB and five straight save conversions. The 34-year-old's 3.86 ERA looks out of place next to his 0.71 WHIP, 38.5 percent strikeout rate and 1.08 FIP.
Apr 23, 2022
Nails down fourth save
Jansen walked one and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his fourth save of the season in a 3-0 win over the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
The former Dodger had a shaky first appearance with Atlanta, but since then Jansen has looked like his usual lock-down self, reeling off five straight scoreless appearances with a 7:1 K:BB while converting all four of his save chances. The 34-year-old has topped 30 saves in seven straight full campaigns, and he seems well on his way to ringing up an eighth.
Apr 20, 2022
Bests former team
Jansen saved Tuesday's 3-1 win against the Dodgers, pitching a 1-2-3 ninth with one strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Make it three straight appearances with a save for the 34-year-old Jansen, who locked down the win on 12 pitches while facing an intimidating trio of Will Smith, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman. Jansen has thrown four perfect innings with five strikeouts since surrendering three runs in his first appearance of the season.
Apr 16, 2022
Notches second save
Jansen struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Saturday to record his second save of the season in a 5-2 win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
The veteran closer saw little use through the first week of the season, but Jensen is now 2-for-2 on save chances with Atlanta over the last two days. Will Smith worked the eighth inning Saturday and Collin McHugh the seventh, so if the team has another late lead to protect Sunday, it's not clear who manager Brian Snitker might turn to.
Apr 16, 2022
Earns first save of season
Jansen recorded his first save of the season Friday against the Padres after tossing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
The veteran hurler endured a shaky debut with the Braves when he gave up three runs on three hits and a walk (with one strikeout) across one inning against the Reds on April 8, but he has bounced back since then and has posted back-to-back scoreless outings since then. He's not going to be the dominant closer he was during his prime years with the Dodgers, but he should continue to see steady work in high-leverage situations.
Apr 9, 2022
Shaky in Atlanta debut
Jansen gave up three runs on three hits and a walk while striking out one in one inning of relief during Friday's 7-6 win over the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Manager Brian Snitker elected to let his new closer make his debut for Atlanta in a non-save situation and the move nearly backfired, as Jansen almost squandered a 7-3 lead before finally getting Jonathan India to fly out with the tying run at first base. Jansen ended up throwing 30 pitches, so expect someone else to get a save chance Saturday if needed.
Mar 27, 2022
Makes spring debut for Atlanta
Jansen allowed an unearned run on a hit and a walk over one inning in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Entering the game in the fifth inning, Jansen got two outs on two pitches before issuing a walk and then watching Eddie Rosario fumble around with a Christian Arroyo single to right field, which allowed the runner to score from first base. It was Jansen's first game action since signing with Atlanta, and the veteran closer should be ready to go at the back of the bullpen by Opening Day.
Mar 18, 2022
Signs with Atlanta
Jansen signed a one-year, $16 million contract with Atlanta on Friday.
ANALYSIS
This is a big wave in the reliever landscape, as it likely means Jansen will displace Will Smith as the closer and and it leaves Blake Treinen as the Dodgers' likely closer. Jansen, 34, logged a 2.22 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 86 strikeouts in 69 innings last season.
Oct 7, 2021
Earns win after strong ninth inning
Jansen was awarded the win in Tuesday's wild-card victory over the Cardinals after striking out three while allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Manager Dave Roberts turned to Jansen to keep the game tied at one in the top of the ninth, and the decision paid off. He worked around a one-out single by Tommy Edman, allowing Chris Taylor to win the game with a walkoff homer in the bottom of the inning. Jansen now owns a 2.35 ERA in 50 career playoff appearances. Notably, he's only recorded a save in 18 of those, so expect Roberts to continue using him in non-save situations as needed.
Oct 2, 2021
Keeps save streak alive
Jansen secured the save Friday against the Brewers after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings, fanning one.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered the game earlier than expected and recorded the final out of the eighth inning before cruising through the ninth, and he only needed 21 pitches (16 strikes) to nail down his 38th save of the year. The veteran reliever has been dominant of late and has tossed six straight scoreless outings while also securing the save in each of his last 17 opportunities.
Sep 27, 2021
Shuts door on Diamondbacks
Jansen picked up the save Sunday against the Diamondbacks after tossing a scoreless ninth inning, giving up a hit but striking out two.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered the game in the ninth inning with the Dodgers holding a three-run lead, and while he started his outing allowing a single to Josh Rojas, that would be all the damage the Diamondbacks would inflict on the 33-year-old reliever. Jansen has been outstanding of late and has given up just one earned run over his last 19 appearances (18.1 innings) dating back to Aug. 20. He owns a 0.49 ERA and a 0.55 WHIP in that span.
Sep 25, 2021
Delivers 35th save
Jansen saved Friday's 4-2 win against the Diamondbacks, striking out one in the ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was called upon in the ninth inning to protect a two-run lead and required just eight pitches to lock down the victory. The 33-year-old has now allowed just one run across 10.1 September innings and possesses a 2.33 ERA on the season.
Sep 24, 2021
Notches another win
Jansen (4-4) earned the win over Colorado on Thursday, pitching a scoreless inning during which he allowed one hit and struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Though Jansen hasn't had a save opportunity since Saturday, he has picked up a pair of wins this week by hurling scoreless ninth frames prior to the Dodgers emerging with a 10th-inning win. The veteran closer allowed an inning-opening single to Charlie Blackmon on Thursday but was able to retire the next three batters to keep the game tied. Jansen has allowed only one run in 10 appearances in September.
Sep 22, 2021
Earns win Tuesday
Jansen (3-4) picked up the win against the Rockies on Tuesday, pitching a scoreless inning during which he walked two and struck out one.
ANALYSIS
It wasn't the most efficient of outings for Jansen -- he threw only nine of 20 pitches for strikes and put the winning run in scoring position with a pair of free passes -- but the right-hander was able to keep Colorado off the scoreboard. He earned the victory as a result of Los Angeles tallying one run in the top of the 10th. The veteran closer has notched two wins and 12 saves since the start of August, posting a 1.54 ERA, 0.69 WHIP and 29:8 K:BB across 23.1 innings over that stretch.
Sep 18, 2021
Picks up 34th save
Jansen worked a clean third of an inning Saturday, striking out the only batter he faced to record his 34th save in the Dodgers' 5-1 win over the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Jansen inherited a two-on, two-out situation Saturday and got Eugenio Suarez swinging to secure the victory for the Dodgers. The right-hander has now gone 14 appearances (13.1 innings) without allowing an earned run and has a K:BB of 16:3 over that same span.
Sep 16, 2021
Strikes out side for 33rd save
Jansen picked up the save against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, striking out all three batters he faced in a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
The veteran closer was at his best Wednesday, mowing down the side on only 11 pitches. As a result, Jansen picked up his 33rd save of the campaign, moving him into third place overall in MLB. Since his last blown save July 22, the right-hander has converted 12 straight save chances while registering a 1.17 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 29:8 K:BB across 23 innings.
Sep 14, 2021
Reinstated Tuesday
Jansen was reinstated from the paternity list prior to Tuesday's game versus the Diamondbacks, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old had been away from the team since Sunday and will return to his role as the closer for the Dodgers. Since July 24, he has converted all 11 of his save opportunities while posting a 1.29 ERA and 11.1 K/9 over 21 innings. Mitch White was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City in corresponding move.
Sep 12, 2021
Notches save No. 32
Jansen saved Saturday's 5-4 win against the Padres, striking out one in a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
Pitching on consecutive nights, Jansen needed just eight pitches to secure the save and help Los Angeles keep pace with the division-leading Giants. This performance comes on the heels of seven pitches Friday as the 33-year-old has gotten six outs on 15 pitches while throwing only three balls over the last two days. The pair of efficient outings mean Jansen might actually be available for the series finale Sunday despite throwing two innings in two days.
Sep 11, 2021
Secures 31st save
Jansen allowed one hit and no runs over one inning against the Padres on Friday to earn the save.
ANALYSIS
The veteran closer was handed the ball in the ninth inning and tasked with protecting a 3-0 Dodgers lead. He allowed a two-out Adam Frazier single but was otherwise very effective, needing only seven pitches (six of which were strikes) to close out the contest. Jansen has rebounded from a rough three-game stretch in July by going a perfect 10-for-10 in save chances over his past 19 appearances. Over that stretch, he has posted a 1.35 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 25:8 K:BB across 20 innings.
Sep 1, 2021
Delivers 30th save
Jansen saved Tuesday's 3-2 triumph over Atlanta, striking out two in a clean ninth.
ANALYSIS
Jansen made quick work of the heart of Atlanta's order to pull into a tie with Liam Hendriks for second in MLB in saves. It was nice to see the three-time All-Star reaffirm his grip on the closer role after sitting out Monday's save situation, but it appears the off day was scheduled maintenance due to Jansen pitching on Saturday and Sunday.
Aug 29, 2021
Posts save No. 29
Jansen saved Saturday's 5-2 win against Colorado, pitching a 1-2-3 ninth with a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered in the ninth with a three-run lead and made quick work of the heart of Colorado's order for his 29th save of the season. The 33-year-old has now surrendered just one run across his last 12 innings and has saves in six of his last seven appearances.
Aug 25, 2021
Secures another save
Jansen picked up the save Tuesday against the Padres after tossing a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and one walk while fanning two.
ANALYSIS
Jansen had a stretch of three straight blown saves just after the All-Star break, but it's safe to say those struggles are a thing of the past now. He has allowed just three earned runs across his last 12 appearances and has gone 7-for-7 in save chances during that span. Jansen has gone 28-for-35 in save chances this season and considering the struggles are behind him, he should remain the top closing option for the Dodgers going forward.
Aug 22, 2021
Fans two in save
Jansen struck out two and hit one batter in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Mets. He allowed no hits nor walks.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was able to work around plunking Kevin Pillar by getting Brandon Nimmo to flyout before striking out Jeff McNeil and Pete Alonso. The Dodgers' closer has converted all five of his save chances in August and six straight dating back to July 24. He's now 27-for-32 in saves with a 2.86 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 61:31 K:BB across 50.1 innings overall.
Aug 21, 2021
Secures fifth straight save
Jansen recorded the save Friday against the Mets after tossing a scoreless inning, striking out one.
ANALYSIS
Jansen has recorded the save in each of his last three appearances and has completed each of his last five chances as well, as he seems to have bounced back from a stretch of three straight blown saves in late July. The veteran reliever has given up just three earned runs across nine innings (eight appearances) this month, which translates to a 3.00 ERA -- but he has also has an excellent 0.89 WHIP and an 11.0 K/9. Jansen owns a 2.92 while going 26-for-31 on save chances this season.
Aug 18, 2021
Records 25th save
Jansen picked up the save Tuesday against the Pirates after allowing one run on two hits and a walk across one inning, fanning one.
ANALYSIS
Jansen might have clinched his 25th save of the season, but he was far from crisp on the mound and needed 24 pitches to get the job done. The veteran reliever is in no danger of losing the closer role any time soon, but it's worth noting he has given up runs in five of his 13 appearances since the All-Star break. He owns a 7.62 ERA across 13 innings while going 4-for-7 in save chances during that span.
Aug 17, 2021
Locks down 24th save
Jansen saved Monday's 2-1 triumph over the Pirates, allowing one hit with one strikeout in the ninth.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was called upon to pitch the ninth inning of a 2-1 game and delivered despite surrendering a one-out double to Yoshi Tsutsugo. The All-Star reliever has slowed noticeably since the start of July as the save is just his fourth in that span and his ERA has more than doubled from 1.34 to 2.85.
Aug 14, 2021
Unavailable Saturday
Jansen will not be available to pitch Saturday against the Mets, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Although Jansen threw just 19 pitches Friday, he did complete two high-leverage innings, leading manager Dave Roberts to give him a day off Saturday. With Blake Treinen, Brusdar Graterol and Justin Bruihl also resting, the Dodgers will have to look elsewhere for late-innings relief work.
Aug 14, 2021
Nabs win in extras
Jansen (2-4) picked up the win in Friday's 6-5 extra-innings victory over the Mets, giving up an unearned run on zero hits and two walks in two scoreless innings. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
After keeping the game knotted a 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Jansen came back out for the 10th and allowed the phantom runner to score. Fortunately, the Dodgers had scored twice in the top of the frame. The appearance was the longest of the season for the veteran closer, and he hadn't been asked to get more than three outs since June 9. After taking a 1.24 ERA into the All-Star break, Jansen had a rough start to the second half that he only now appears to be shaking off -- despite not giving up an earned run in his last four appearances, he has a 9.00 ERA over his last 10 innings.
Aug 8, 2021
Posts save No. 23
Jansen saved Saturday's 5-3 triumph over the Angels, pitching a 1-2-3 ninth with one strikeout.
ANALYSIS
After the Dodgers took the lead in the bottom of the eighth, Jansen entered and needed just nine pitches to retire the top of the Angels' order. The save is Jansen's first since July 24 as he's only thrown four innings over the last two weeks.
Jul 25, 2021
Secures 22nd save
Jansen pitched the ninth inning of Saturday's 1-0 win against the Rockies, allowing a walk with one strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Jansen rebounded from three straight blown saves to lock down his first save since July 3, only allowing a two-out walk to Ryan McMahon. The three-time all star is tied for fourth in MLB in saves and lowered his ERA to 2.97.
Jul 23, 2021
Another blown save
Jansen (1-4) was tagged with the loss and a blown save Thursday against the Giants after giving up four runs on four hits and two walks through two-thirds of an inning. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Jansen has blown his last three save opportunities and it's safe to wonder whether he will continue to be the Dodgers' closer going forward. He was absolutely woeful Thursday and has been struggling of late, giving up eight runs on nine hits and four walks while fanning just three over his last three outings. Even though he has gone 21-for-26 in save chances this season, the fact that he has blown his last three save opportunities isn't an encouraging sign going forward. Plus, he owns a dreadful 12.71 ERA through seven outings (5.2 innings) this month.
Jul 22, 2021
Consecutive blown saves
Jansen (1-3) earned the loss and blown save in Wednesday's 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Giants, allowing three runs on three hits, two walks and a strikeout in one third of an inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered in the ninth to protect a 2-1 lead and immediately surrendered a single and two-run home run to blow that before allowing three more runners to reach base while recording just one out. This was far and away Jansen's worst outing of the year as the three runs allowed increased his season total by 50 percent and bloated his ERA from 1.45 to 2.15.
Jul 19, 2021
Blows save Sunday
Jansen couldn't convert a save opportunity Sunday against Colorado. He gave up one run on two hits over one inning.
ANALYSIS
The veteran closer's first chance for a save in the second half of the season didn't go well, as Jansen yielded a double and a single to allow the tying run to cross the plate. The blown save was just his third of the campaign in 24 chances. Despite Sunday's disappointing outcome, Jansen is enjoying a resurgent season overall with a 1.45 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 41:22 K:BB across 37.1 innings.
Jul 11, 2021
Picks up first win
Jansen (2-1) won Sunday's 7-4 victory over the Diamondbacks, allowing one hit in one inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve a 4-4 tie and became the winner when Max Muncy walked it off in the bottom of the inning. It was the closer's fourth appearance of July and Jansen concludes the first half with 21 saves, a 1.24 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 41:22 K:BB ratio.
Jul 4, 2021
Secures another save
Jansen earned the save over the Nationals on Saturday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two over a scoreless inning.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander had to sweat a bit in the outing, as he allowed the first two batters he faced to reach base. However, Jansen bounced back with a pair of strikeouts before getting Josh Bell on a lineout to end the game. The veteran closer has gone nearly two months without a blown save and has posted a sterling 1.34 ERA overall this season. Though he is on pace for a career-worst 5.6 BB/9, Jansen is thriving by holding batters to a .111 batting average.
Jun 30, 2021
Records 20th save
Jansen picked up the save in Tuesday's win over the Giants after hurling a scoreless ninth inning, walking one and striking out two.
ANALYSIS
Jansen hit Alex Dickerson and walked Buster Posey to start the inning, but he settled down afterwards and struck out two of the final three batters he faced to clinch his 20th save of the year, tying him for second in the National League in that category. The righty also extended his streak of scoreless outings to 11.
Jun 29, 2021
Notches 19th save
Jansen saved Monday's 3-2 win over the Giants, allowing one hit with one strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Jansen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth though he gave up a hit because Mike Tauchman was thrown out attempting to stretch his single to a double. The appearance lowered his ERA to 1.42 and he's yet to allow a run in 9.1 June innings.
Jun 20, 2021
Saves 18th game
Jansen saved Sunday's 9-8 win over Arizona, striking out one in a clean ninth.
ANALYSIS
Initially, it appeared Jansen would have the night off but the Diamondbacks scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it a one-run game, necessitating the closer's services. He only needed seven pitches, throwing six for strikes, to put away the heart of Arizona's order and has now recorded a save in six straight appearances.
Jun 19, 2021
Collects 17th save
Jansen pitched a perfect inning to notch the save in Friday's win over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
The veteran closer didn't fan any batters in the outing, but he threw 10 of 13 pitches for strikes and had little trouble setting down all three hitters he faced. Since blowing a save due to an unearned run against the Cubs on May 5, Jansen has held opponents scoreless in 15 of 16 appearances and has gone a perfect 12-for-12 in save opportunities. His overall 1.57 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and .101 BAA on the season leave little doubt that Jansen remains one of the game's elite closers.
Jun 15, 2021
Likely unavailable Tuesday
Manager Dave Roberts said Jansen is likely unavailable during Tuesday's game against the Phillies after the right-hander recorded one-inning saves Sunday and Monday, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Roberts didn't definitively say that the right-hander wouldn't pitch Tuesday, but it sounds like the skipper will do everything he can to stay away from using the veteran closer for a third-consecutive day. With Blake Treinen also pitching in the last two games, Joe Kelly could receive a save chance should the opportunity arise.
Jun 15, 2021
Picks up another save
Jansen needed just nine pitches to pick up the save over the Phillies on Monday. He struck out a batter and did not allow anyone to reach base in the process.
ANALYSIS
Jansen recorded his second save in as many days and had a nice bounceback performance after allowing a run on two hits against the Rangers on Sunday. The 33-year-old righty is fourth in the majors in saves and owns a 1.63 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 31:19 K:BB over 27.2 innings.
Jun 14, 2021
Notches 15th save
Jansen pitched the ninth inning, allowing two hits and earning the save in the win over the Rangers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Jansen inherited runners on the corners with no outs in the bottom of the ninth with a three-run lead. It was not the smoothest outing for him, as he allowed a single to the first two batters he faced. He then retired the next three batters in order while the bases were loaded to end the game. Jansen is 15-for-17 in save opportunities with a 1.69 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP in 26.2 innings.
Jun 10, 2021
Records four-out save
Jansen allowed a walk and struck out one over 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the save in Wednesday's 2-1 win over Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Jansen got the last out of the eighth inning and then worked the ninth for his second save in as many days. The 33-year-old ended the game with quick reaction time, snaring Ke'Bryan Hayes' line drive back to the mound. Jansen has a 1.75 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 30:19 K:BB across 25.2 innings this season. He is now 14-for-16 in save chances.
Jun 8, 2021
Nails down 13th save
Jansen picked up a one-out scoreless save that included a strikeout against the Pirates on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
After Nate Jones started to erase a 5-1 deficit in the ninth by serving up a pair of home runs, Jansen was called upon to halt the Pirates' rally. He did so without a fight, sending his only batter down on strikes. The veteran right-hander has been solid this season, pitching to the tune of a 1.85 ERA and 1.03 WHIP while going 11-for-13 in save chances.
May 29, 2021
Surrenders three in loss
Jansen (0-2) lost Friday's 8-5 match with the Giants, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk with a strikeout in 0.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was brought in for the 10th inning but allowed inherited runner Steven Duggar to before giving up an Evan Longoria two-RBI double before being removed with two outs. The blowup outing was Jansen's first of the campaign as he had allowed only three runs on the season prior to Friday and he remains a quality closer option.
May 28, 2021
Records 12th save
Jansen saved Tuesday's 4-3 win over San Francisco, pitching a clean ninth with no base runners and two strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Jansen struck out the first wo Giants he faced and induced an Evan Longoria fly out to lock down his 12th save, placing him among the league leaders. It was Jansen's seventh straight appearance with a save as Los Angeles has won 13 of their last 15 games.
May 23, 2021
Notches 11th save
Jansen pitched a perfect ninth inning while striking out one to record the save in the win over the Giants on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered with a three-run lead and retired the side to record his 11th save, tying for third-best in all of baseball. The 33-year-old blew two saves earlier this year, but he has six straight saves in his last six appearances. He has a 1.31 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP with a 10.5 K/9 in 20.2 innings.
May 21, 2021
Could be unavailable until Sunday
Manager Dave Roberts said Jansen may not be available until Sunday after pitching in three of the past four games, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old covered 3.1 innings on 46 pitches while picking up three saves during the four-game set versus the Diamondbacks this week, so Roberts wants to give his veteran closer a bit of a breather. Jansen shouldn't be expected to pitch Friday against the Giants, while his status for Saturday figures to be more up in the air. Blake Treinen has one save, 11 holds and a 2.00 ERA across 18 innings this season and is the likely candidate to cover the ninth inning in the meantime for Los Angeles.
May 21, 2021
Third save in four games
Jansen recorded his 10th save in Thursday's 3-2 win over Arizona, pitching a clean ninth with two strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Jansen made quick work of Josh Reddick, David Peralta and Nick Ahmed to torment the Diamondbacks with yet another save, his third of the four game series. After blowing a save May fifth, Jansen has rebounded with scoreless appearances and five saves while allowing only four base runners with 10 strikeouts.
May 20, 2021
Locks down Snakes for ninth save
Jansen struck out a pair of batters in a 1-2-3 ninth inning en route to earning his ninth save of the season Wednesday in the Dodgers' 4-2 win over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Joe Kelly, Victor Gonzalez and Jansen put the clamps on Arizona after starter Clayton Kershaw exited following the sixth inning. The relievers allowed only one of the 10 batters they faced to reach base, guiding Los Angeles to its seventh win in eight games in the process. With four consecutive stress-free saves under his belt, Jansen looks to have settled in nicely after a somewhat rocky start to the season. The save he notched Wednesday was the 321st of his career, tying Jansen with Jose Mesa for 20th in MLB history.
May 18, 2021
Earns another save
Jansen recorded his eighth save of the season Monday against the Diamondbacks. He allowed one hit and one walk with no strikeouts across 1.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered the game to record the final out of the eighth inning following a groundout of Domingo Leyba, and while things got complicated in the ninth when he had runners on first and second with one out, he closed things out with a double play. Jansen has gone 8-for-10 in save opportunities this season.
May 15, 2021
Locks down seventh save
Jansen pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to save Friday's 9-6 win against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Jansen retired all three Marlins he faced in securing an easy save for Los Angeles. He now has seven saves and a 1.65 ERA on the season and is among the game's top closers.
May 12, 2021
Cruises to sixth save
Jansen picked up the save against the Mariners on Tuesday, pitching a scoreless ninth inning and collecting two strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Jansen made quick work of Seattle while protecting a two-run lead, needing 14 pitches to set down the side in order. The veteran closer has struggled with his control at times this season, walking 14 batters over 15.1 innings. However, he has converted six of eight save opportunities and pitched to a 1.76 ERA while once again averaging over a strikeout per inning. His velocity has hovered around 93 mph, up a few ticks from his marks over the previous three campaigns.
May 6, 2021
Charged with blown save
Jansen allowed one run (none earned) on three walks across one inning to blow the save Wednesday against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered the game in the 10th inning with a one-run lead. Though he had to deal with the runner starting at second base, Jansen didn't help himself by walking the leadoff hitter and then throwing a wild pitch. The rest of his line looks worse than reality, as the other two walks were intentional. Even so, Jansen has struggled with his control this season, as he now has 13 walks across 13.1 innings of work.
Apr 27, 2021
Charged with loss Monday
Jansen (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season Monday against the Reds after serving up a two-run homer in the 10th inning. He also walked and struck out a batter in the outing.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered the game to begin the 10th and was unable to keep the Reds off the scoreboard. He surrendered a two-run homer to Jesse Winker on the second pitch of the inning and the Dodgers were unable to mount a comeback in the bottom half of the frame. The 33-year-old now owns a 2.61 ERA over 10.1 innings on the year and may not be available to pitch for a day or two after needing 24 pitches to get three outs in Monday's extra-innings loss.
Apr 25, 2021
Post four-out save Saturday
Jansen earned the save against the Padres on Saturday, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings and yielding one walk while striking out two.
ANALYSIS
Jansen has now been used for more than one frame in three of his eight appearances this season. He's thrived in the early going, successfully finishing five of six save opportunities while registering a 1.93 ERA and 12:7 K:BB across 9.1 innings. The veteran closer's velocity has ticked up a touch this season, and he appears to still have plenty left in the tank in his 12th MLB campaign.
Apr 21, 2021
Notches fourth save
Jansen earned the save Tuesday against the Mariners by not allowing a baserunner and recording two strikeouts during the ninth inning.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander made quick work of the top of Seattle's lineup, and he retired the side in order while delivering eight of 10 pitches for strikes. Jansen is 4-for-5 in save chances and has allowed two runs on two hits with a 10:6 K:BB through eight innings this season.
Apr 17, 2021
Unavailable Saturday
Manager Dave Roberts said Jansen is unavailable to pitch Saturday at San Diego, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old threw 26 pitches and allowed one run on one hit and one walk with two strikeouts over 1.1 innings Friday in a non-save situation, so he won't be available for Saturday's contest. Corey Knebel has two saves and three holds through seven appearances this season and is the likely option to fill in for Jansen as the closer.
Apr 15, 2021
Secures third save
Jansen earned the save against Colorado on Wednesday, hurling a scoreless inning and allowing one walk while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was called upon in the ninth inning to protect a two-run lead. The veteran closer began his outing by walking Dom Nunez, but he took control from there, striking out each of the subsequent three batters. Following a blown save against Oakland on April 7, Jansen has bounced back with saves in each of his following two appearances. He hasn't allowed a run or a hit while registering a 5:1 K:BB over two innings during that span.
Apr 11, 2021
Bounces back with clean save
Jansen earned his second save of the season in Sunday's 3-0 win over the Nationals, as he recorded two strikeouts in an easy 1-2-3 frame.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was able to notch his second save of the season, and his first since April 3, as he returned to dominant form while only needing eight pitches to get through the inning. Jansen was involved in a blown save earlier in the week and then was passed up for a save opportunity in favor of Corey Knebel on Friday which may have had fantasy managers shaking in their boots. He reassured his closer status Sunday and appeared to turn back the clock a bit while touching 94 MPH with his cutter and reaching 95 MPH with his sinker. The Dodgers have a day off Monday which means Jansen should be available if needed when the team returns Tuesday in a home series against the Rockies.
Apr 10, 2021
Will have workload monitored
Jansen did not receive the save opportunity in the Dodgers' home opener versus Washington because he had pitched twice in the previous three days, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Cory Knebel was summoned in the ninth inning Friday with the Dodgers holding onto a one-run lead. That opportunity would typically go to Jansen, but manager Dave Roberts made it clear that the veteran closer wasn't passed over for performance reasons, explaining "He's [Jansen's] in the same bucket as all our pitchers, as far as workload." Though Knebel converted the save and Jansen has been shaky so far this season, it's probably premature to to expect a change in the ninth-inning role. However, it seems likely that Jansen won't be taxed early in the campaign, potentially opening save opportunities for Knebel, Blake Treinen and Victor Gonzalez.
Apr 7, 2021
Falters in save opportunity
Jansen was tagged with a blown save Wednesday against Oakland. He pitched one inning and allowed one run on one hit and two walks while failing to register any strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Jansen simply didn't have his best stuff Wednesday, as he threw only nine of 22 pitches for strikes and walked a pair. He allowed the tying run to score in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly and walked the following batter, but the veteran closer was able to get out of the frame with only one run on the board. Jansen has posted a concerning 1:4 K:BB through 3.2 innings this season, though he has yielded just one run. His ninth-inning job is likely secure for now, but he has looked far from dominant thus far in the campaign.
Apr 4, 2021
Records save Saturday
Jansen picked up the save in Saturday's win over the Rockies. He tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing a walk and striking out one.
ANALYSIS
Jansen faded away during the 2020 playoffs and there was a chance he could've lost his long-time as closer, but it seems the organization is committed to him to remain as their ninth-inning guy -- and he responded in his first outing of the current campaign. Jansen recorded a five-out save and was quite sharp, tossing 14 of his 24 pitches for strikes and closing the door on the Rockies after they sniffed a potential comeback. Despite his postseason implosion in 2020, Jansen recorded a 3.33 ERA while going 11-for-13 in save opportunities last season.
Mar 18, 2021
Dominating in Cactus League play
Jansen has thrown five scoreless innings this spring, allowing two hit and no walks while striking out nine.
ANALYSIS
The veteran closer faded during the playoffs last season and watched Julio Urias record the save in the clinching game of the World Series. However, the Dodgers appear committed to allowing Jansen to reprise his role as the team's closer this season, and the right-hander has justified the organization's confidence in him with a shutdown spring. Jansen ranked in the 90th percentile or higher in a variety of Statcast metrics last season, including xERA, xBA, xSLG, exit velocity and hard-hit rate, so he could be a value for fantasy managers who draft him with the belief that he still has something left in the tank.
Mar 8, 2021
Tosses scoreless frame Sunday
Jansen completed one scoreless inning in Sunday's Cactus League contest against Texas, allowing one hit. He did not issue any walks or collect any strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Jansen had some issues with his mechanics late last week that resulted in a delay in his next trip to the mound, but those problems didn't appear to surface Sunday. Jansen allowed a one-out single in his lone frame but otherwise had a smooth outing, throwing 12 total pitches (seven for strikes). Per Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register, the veteran closer touched the low 90s in the appearance, just a tick below his average velocity last season. Jansen no longer comes without risk, but he should have adequate opportunity to prove that he can still thrive in a ninth-inning role for one of baseball's best teams.
Mar 6, 2021
Next spring outing pushed back
Jansen won't appear in a game for at least a few days after he felt uncomfortable with his mechanics during a live batting practice session Thursday, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen looked great in his spring debut Monday, retiring all three batters he faced -- two by strikeout -- on only nine pitches. There's no indication that the right-hander's issues while throwing to teammates Thursday has anything to do with an injury, so it sounds like the team is simply giving Jansen a few days to get right before he returns to game action. Though Jansen's numbers have fallen back a bit over the past few seasons, he'll enter the campaign as the Dodgers' Opening Day closer once again.
Feb 18, 2021
Expected to begin season as closer
Jansen is expected to serve as the Dodgers' Opening Day closer in 2021, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen struggled during the postseason in 2020 and lost out on some save chances as a result, but manager Dave Roberts said Thursday that he expects the right-hander to begin the season as the team's closer. Jansen converted on 11 of his 13 chances and recorded a 3.33 ERA and 33:9 K:BB over 24.1 innings in 2020. If he struggles to begin the season, Blake Treinen and Brusdar Graterol could see some save chances for the Dodgers.
Oct 26, 2020
Bypassed for save chance
Manager Dave Roberts said prior to the Dodgers' 4-2 win over the Rays in Game 5 of the World Series that he was uncertain of Jansen's role, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen's blown save in Game 4 on Saturday wasn't a total implosion, but it nonetheless continued a trend of underwhelming postseason appearances for the 33-year-old. With that in mind, Roberts' decision to bypass Jansen for a save chance Sunday came as little surprise, with Blake Treinen stepping in and working around a leadoff single to deliver a scoreless ninth inning. The diminished velocity and elevated flyball rate Jansen has experienced during the playoffs could make Roberts reluctant to turn to him in higher-leverage spots for the remainder of the World Series.
Oct 25, 2020
Blows save in Game 4
Jansen was charged with the blown save and the loss in Game 4 of the World Series against the Rays on Saturday after recording two outs during the ninth inning and giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits with one strikeout and one walk.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander retired two of the first three batters he faced, but a two-out walk to Randy Arozarena put the winning run on base. Brett Phillips' subsequent RBI single was botched in the outfield by Chris Taylor, and catcher Will Smith missed the relay throw with Arozarena dead to rights at home plate, allowing the game-winning run to score. It was a circus finish to a back-and-forth affair, and Jansen has now allowed three runs (two earned) in 1.2 innings over his two appearances in the World Series. The Dodgers seem likely to test their options for any save chances across the final two or three games of the series.
Oct 18, 2020
Earns second save of postseason
Jansen picked up the save in Game 6 of the NLCS against the Braves on Saturday, throwing one scoreless inning without allowing any baserunners.
ANALYSIS
A shaky start to the playoffs has put Jansen's role in some doubt, but he got the job done Saturday. As elimination-game saves opportunities go, it was a relatively low-stress one, as he faced the bottom three hitters in Atlanta's order with a two-run lead. The Dodgers are evidently still willing to use the veteran in save situations, however, and he rewarded the team's faith this time around.
Oct 8, 2020
Unavailable for Game 3
Jansen won't be available to pitch during Game 3 of the NLDS against the Padres on Thursday after pitching during the past two games, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen pitched on two consecutive nights to begin the series, including a 30-pitch outing Wednesday as he nearly blew the save. As a result, manager Dave Roberts indicated that he won't pitch during the third game as the Dodgers hold a 2-0 lead over San Diego. Roberts said that Thursday's closer will be based on matchups if the Dodgers have a save opportunity. However, Jansen could certainly be available for the rest of the NLDS if the series continues, even though Roberts didn't commit to using the right-hander as the closer going forward.
Oct 8, 2020
Nearly blows save chance in Game 2
Jansen earned a hold after recording two outs and surrendering two runs on three hits with one strikeout and zero walks during the ninth inning of Wednesday's Game 2 win over San Diego.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander entered with a three-run cushion and struck out the first batter he faced, but he allowed three of the next four batters to reach before being pulled in favor of Joe Kelly, who stranded the inherited runner. Jansen has been lights out throughout his career in the playoffs with a 1.94 ERA over 51 innings entering Wednesday's game, but his role going forward may not be so clear. According to Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register, manager Dave Roberts didn't commit to anything regarding the closer's role and said he's "going to keep thinking through it."
Oct 1, 2020
Picks up Game 1 save
Jansen walked one and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning en route to the save Wednesday in Game 1 against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
He got Eric Sogard to fly out and then got Keston Hiura to ground out to start the frame. Jace Peterson then walked as a pinch hitter before Christian Yelich struck out while representing the tying run. Jansen should be available for Thursday's Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series.
Sep 27, 2020
Appears in non-save situation
Jansen pitched a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout in a non-save situation in Sunday's 5-0 win over the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Jansen hasn't notched a save since Sept. 15, but he has racked up six consecutive scoreless outings. He's allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out eight in that span. The 32-year-old closer ends the regular season with a 3.33 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 11 saves in 13 chances.
Sep 16, 2020
Escapes danger with save
Jansen allowed two hits and a walk while striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning for the save in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Jansen made things interesting, loading the bases with two singles and a walk. He then retired Wil Myers and Jake Cronenworth on strikeouts to avoid trouble. Jansen has converted 11-of-13 save chances this year, with a 3.54 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 28 strikeouts over 20.1 innings. He's pitched on three of the last four days, so he may not be used if a save situation arises in Wednesday's series-ending matinee.
Sep 14, 2020
Bounces back with scoreless frame
Jansen tossed a perfect inning in a non-save situation against Houston on Sunday, striking out one batter.
ANALYSIS
Per J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News, manager Dave Roberts was set on using Jansen "no matter what" after the closer imploded in a blown save Saturday. The intent, clearly, was to allow Jansen a chance to get back on the right track quickly, and he did just that with Sunday's easy outing. The veteran has successfully converted 10-of-12 save chances this season while registering a 12.1 K/9, which would be his highest mark since 2017.
Sep 13, 2020
Melts down against Houston
Jansen (3-1) took the loss and blew the save against the Astros on Saturday, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits without retiring a batter.
ANALYSIS
Jansen had no problem getting the ball over the plate in the disastrous outing -- 18 of his 21 pitches went for strikes -- but he was unable to locate his cutter, allowing Houston to scatter base hits at will. Los Angeles stuck with him in the hope that he'd be able to rediscover his early-season dominance, but the veteran never found his form and left the mound without recording an out. After an effective outing Sept. 4, Jansen had a superb 1.06 ERA and had surrendered only two earned runs on the season. Since that time, he has given up eight runs (six earned) in 1.1 frames to push his ERA all the way up to 3.93. The organization is likely to give their longtime closer a chance to get back on track over the final few weeks of the regular season, though there could be some urgency to ensure that Jansen doesn't carry over his recent struggles to the postseason.
Sep 9, 2020
Earns win despite struggles
Jansen (3-0) earned the win Tuesday against the Diamondbacks. He gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits while fanning one across 1.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered the game in the bottom of the ninth with a runner on first, but the Dodgers escaped the threat by putting Tim Locastro out at home. He struggled in the 10th inning as well, giving up a two-run homer to Christian Walker and a two-out RBI single to David Peralta before ending the game with a strikeout. Jansen might have earned the win here, but he is not expected to be happy with his performance.
Sep 2, 2020
Gets save Tuesday
Jensen struck out the only batter he faced to earn the save in Tuesday's 6-3 win over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
The Dodgers turned to Scott Alexander with a five-run lead to begin the ninth inning, but he gave up a two-run homer to Nick Ahmed. Jansen then entered the contest after Alexander walked Andy Young. Jansen whiffed Daulton Varsho on five pitches to end the threat while earning his NL-leading 10th save. Jansen has a 1.20 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 22 strikeouts across 15 innings this season.
Aug 29, 2020
Earns ninth save
Jansen allowed one walk but struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Saturday against the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was called upon to protect a three-run lead and had little trouble doing so. He allowed a leadoff walk but then retired the next three batters he faced -- two via strikeout. Jansen now has nine saves on the season while maintaining a 1.23 ERA with 21 strikeouts across 14.2 innings.
Aug 27, 2020
Locks down eighth save
Jansen picked up the save Thursday after tossing a scoreless ninth inning. He allowed one hit and a walk while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
Jansen was tasked with protecting a two-run lead in the seventh inning of the second half Thursday's twin bill against the Giants. After giving up a leadoff bunt to Brandon Belt, whose solo homer was the cause of Jansen's first blown save of the season Tuesday, the right-hander recorded back-to-back strikeouts before walking Joey Bart. Luckily, the threat ended as quickly as it began with the third strikeout of the inning. Jansen is now 7-for-8 on save opportunities this season with a 1.32 ERA and 0.80 WHIP.
Aug 26, 2020
Blows first save
Jansen allowed a solo home run in one inning Tuesday to blow the save against San Francisco. He didn't allow any additional baserunners and struck out two.
ANALYSIS
Jansen entered the game having successfully converted each of his seven save opportunities this season, but Brandon Belt ended that streak when he launched a solo shot with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Jansen recovered to strike out the next two batters, but the Giants ultimately walked off with the win in 11 frames. Despite the letdown, Jansen remains one of the more secure closers in the game and has posted strong numbers this season, including a 1.42 ERA and 16:4 K:BB over 12.2 innings.
Aug 23, 2020
Picks up win
Jansen (1-0) struck out the only batter he faced and earned the win in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Jansen whiffed Elias Diaz to close the top of the ninth inning. Cody Bellinger's walkoff solo shot made Jansen a winner. The 32-year-old closer has racked up seven saves with a 0.79 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and 14 strikeouts across 11.2 innings this season.
Aug 18, 2020
Escapes jam for save
Jansen allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one in one inning to earn the save in Monday's 11-9 win over the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Jansen allowed a single to Dylan Moore and then walked Kyle Lewis to put the tying run aboard. The Dodgers' closer retired the next three batters to escape the jam, earning his seventh save of the year. Jansen has 0.87 ERA and 0.77 WHIP with 13 strikeouts in 10.1 innings.
Aug 16, 2020
Earns sixth save of season
Jansen earned his sixth save of the season Saturday against the Angels. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two.
ANALYSIS
Jansen has been outstanding this season, and he has gone 6-for-6 in save opportunities while also racking up four straight appearances without allowing a hit or a run. In fact, Jansen has allowed two just hits and one run all season long, and he owns a blistering 0.96 ERA with a 0.64 WHIP in 9.1 innings across 10 appearances in 2020.
Aug 15, 2020
Earns one-out save
Jansen earned the save Friday against the Angels despite pitching just one-third of an inning. He struck out the only batter he faced.
ANALYSIS
Jansen, who recently admitted he wasn't feeling 100 percent at full strength following his bout with COVID-19, came into the game in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and a runner on second base, but he struck out Jason Castro to close the game out. The star reliever is 5-for-5 in save opportunities this season and has not allowed an earned run in his last three appearances.
Aug 6, 2020
Not yet 100 percent
Jansen feels that his conditioning has not yet fully returned following his bout with COVID-19, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen missed the start of summer camp as he recovered from the virus, but he was able to return in time to lock down the Dodgers' closer role by the start of the regular season. The veteran indicated that he expects to add strength as the campaign progresses, though his stated lack of conditioning has not affected his performance in the early going. Through six outings, Jansen is a perfect 4-for-4 in save opportunities while allowing only one earned run and compiling a 6:3 K:BB over six innings.
Aug 6, 2020
Earns fourth save
Jansen earned his fourth save of the season in Wednesday's win over the Padres. He allowed one run on two hits and a walk while fanning one in one inning.
ANALYSIS
Jansen worked the ninth and gave up an RBI single to Tommy Pham, who scored Fernando Tatis, but he got the job done after inducing Manny Machado into a game-ending double play. It was the first time Jansen allowed a run this season, but he remains 4-for-4 in save opportunities.
Aug 5, 2020
Locks down third save
Jansen pitched a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout to earn the save in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Jansen retired Tommy Pham, Jake Cronenworth and Abraham Almonte in order in the ninth to earn his third save of the season. He's yet to give up a run in 2020, allowing just one hit and two walks with five strikeouts in five innings this season. The 32-year-old has a firm grasp on the Dodgers' closer gig.
Aug 2, 2020
Earns second save
Jansen struck out two batters and hit another in a scoreless ninth inning Sunday, earning a save in the win over Arizona.
ANALYSIS
After Jansen plunked Starling Marte to lead off the inning, he settled in to retire the next three batters in order. For the season, the 32-year-old has recorded four shutout innings with just one hit allowed.
Jul 29, 2020
Picks up first save
Jansen gave up a hit in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday to record his first save of the season in a 5-2 win over the Astros.
ANALYSIS
After a clean first outing of the year in a non-save situation, Jansen was back in his familiar role and got the job done, albeit in not exactly dominant fashion -- he gave up a one-out double to Carlos Correa and failed to produce a strikeout. The 32-year-old's performance has been on the decline for a couple years now, but as long as Jansen sees consistent work in the ninth, he'll still have plenty of fantasy value.
Jul 27, 2020
Debuts in non-save situation
Jansen struck out one batter in a perfect ninth inning against the Giants on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Manager Dave Roberts had Jansen get some work in late with the Dodgers losing 3-1 after his closer did not pitch in any of the team's first three games. Jansen's first cutter was clocked at just 88.6 mph, but he quickly dialed it up to 90-91 mph. The save chances will come and Jansen would have to squander several of those in a row to lose the job.

Sharp in return to action
Jansen needed only eight pitches to retire four batters in an intrasquad game Tuesday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
In Jansen's first intrasquad appearance since joining the team at camp Sunday, the right-hander made swift work of four teammates, including a pair of league MVPs (Mookie Betts and Cody Bellinger). Jansen picked up one strikeout in the efficient appearance, punching out Corey Seager on three pitches. Despite his late start to camp, Jansen should be ready to close games by Opening Day.

Slated for four exhibition outings
Jansen is expected to make four appearances on the mound before Opening Day, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen did not report to camp until Sunday and disclosed that his absence was a result of testing positive for COVID-19, but the team nonetheless appears eager to get him geared up for the start of the regular season. Though Opening Day is only 10 days away, four exhibition appearances could be enough for Jansen to feel comfortable assuming his regular closer duties from the start of the campaign.

Reports to camp
Jansen (undisclosed) reported to the Blue Jays' camp Sunday, Pedro Moura of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen missed the first several days of camp for an undisclosed reason, but he rejoined the team Sunday with just under two weeks remaining until Opening Day. It's unclear whether he'll be ready for the start of the regular season, but manager Dave Roberts said Tuesday that the team hasn't considered who might fill in for Jansen if he's unavailable for the beginning of the season. The Dodgers are scheduled to open the season July 23 against the Giants.

Expected back soon
Manager Dave Roberts said he expects to see Jansen back at camp soon, Alanna Rizzo of Spectrum SportsNet LA reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen has yet to report to the Dodgers' camp for undisclosed reasons, though it sounds like he might be nearing a return. That said, his status for Opening Day remains unclear as Roberts also mentioned to David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports that the team has given thought to who might fill in as closer if Jansen doesn't return in time to be ready for the start of the season.

Absent from camp
Manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that Jansen hasn't reported to the Dodgers' camp yet, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Roberts said he wasn't able to discuss why Jansen hasn't reported to camp yet but said that he hopes to see him soon. It's unclear when the closer may report to camp or whether his absence will affect his availability for the start of the regular season. Jansen implied in late June that he didn't intend to opt out despite being considered a "high risk" player.

Implies he will not opt out
Jansen strongly indicated on 710 ESPN Los Angeles that he will not opt out of the 2020 season, Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.com reports. "I don't want to live my life in fear of something," Jansen said. "I'm going to be cautious, make sure I wash my hands, if I'm in a clubhouse, just keep my distance. But health-wise I think I'm fine, I feel great, thank God."
ANALYSIS
Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, players considered "high risk" can opt out of the season and still receive their full pro-rated pay. Jansen underwent a procedure in November of 2018 to fix an irregular heartbeat, so he would be considered "high risk" for an MLB player, but it sounds like he fully intends to return to his role as endgamer for the Dodgers in 2020.

Staying ready during hiatus
Jansen has been working out "every day" and throwing occasional bullpens in anticipation of a resumption of play, he stated in an interview with John Hartung of Spectrum SportsNet LA.
ANALYSIS
Jansen's bullpen sessions have been far from traditional -- he explained that they have taken place on the street in front of his home -- but he has nonetheless been able to maintain a consistent workout schedule despite a lack of access to team facilities. If a 2020 season is able to be played, Jansen will once again function as the Dodgers' closer and will look to bounce back from a mildly disappointing 2019 campaign in which he suffered a career-worst eight blown saves.

Dominating in Cactus League play
Jansen has retired all nine batters he has faced this spring, six by strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Per Michael J. Duarte of NBC Los Angeles, Jansen is throwing less cutters this spring while relying more on his two-seam fastball and slider. There have also been reports of Jansen throwing with increased velocity in the early going. All of this bodes well for a bounceback campaign from the veteran closer, who posted a career-worst 3.71 ERA last season.

Good velocity early on
Jansen sat between 92 and 93 mph in his first spring outing Sunday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
The information was relayed by manager Dave Roberts, who added that was well above the 85 to 87 mph velocity Jansen showed in his first outing last season. As for results, Jansen completed one inning against the Cubs, whiffing two while not allowing a baserunner.

Experimenting with slider grips
Jansen has been working with a number of former pitchers on new slider grips, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Plunkett, Jansen felt particularly comfortable with one new grip shown to him by Rick Honeycutt and Orel Hershiser. Though Jansen's primary pitch is a cutter, he went to the slider 12.3 percent of the time last season, more than doubling his 2018 mark. The veteran closer could look to mix things up more in 2020 after accumulating a career-worst eight blown saves last season.

Working on mechanical adjustments
Jansen has adjusted his delivery in an attempt to refine his cutter, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Jansen consulted with Driveline Baseball in Washington during the offseason to pinpoint adjustments that, according to the veteran reliever, have given his cutter more "rising life." The 32-year-old relies heavily on the pitch, throwing it 74.3 percent of the time in 2019 -- though opponents hit .232 against the offering, Jansen's worst mark since 2014. While Jansen remains a steady source of saves, his ERA dropped to a career-worst 3.71 last season.
