He'll likely go through a workout early Tuesday before the Diamondbacks determine if he's fit to return to the lineup for the series opener in Chicago. With a .991 OPS thus far in September, Marte is doing his part to ensure the Diamondbacks stay in the thick of the National League wild-card race.

Marte (knee) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs but could be available off the bench if needed, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte was removed from Saturday's contest with left knee soreness after being hit by a pitch, and he's considered day-to-day after X-rays came back negative. The 29-year-old will be held out of the starting nine for at least one game, with Jace Peterson handling the keystone Sunday.
Sep 10, 2023
X-rays negative
X-rays on Marte's right knee came back negative, but his status for Sunday's game remains uncertain, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.

Sep 9, 2023
Battling knee soreness
Marte left Saturday's game against the Cubs in the seventh inning due to right knee soreness.
ANALYSIS
After fouling a ball off his right knee in the first inning, Marte's injury caught up to him in the seventh, and he was replaced at second base by Geraldo Perdomo. Marte's injury doesn't seem to be severe -- especially since he remained in the game after initially injuring his knee -- and he could potentially return to the lineup in a day or two.

Exits early Saturday
Marte was removed from Saturday's game against the Cubs in the seventh inning, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte fouled a ball off his right knee in the first inning of Saturday's contest, but he was able to stay in for another six innings afterward. The fact Marte was able to remain in the game for so long likely means he's not seriously injured, but the D-backs will surely keep an eye on him. Marte should be considered day-to-day for now.

Marte is up to 22 long balls on the campaign, his highest mark since he slugged 32 homers in 2019.
Sep 4, 2023
Getting a breather
Marte is not in the lineup for Monday's game versus the Rockies.

Aug 27, 2023
Lifts three-run homer
Marte went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run and a walk in Saturday's 8-7 extra-innings loss to the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Marte's fifth-inning blast put the Diamondbacks ahead 4-0, but it wasn't a lead they could hold. The second baseman has gone 6-for-18 (.333) with two homers and five RBI over his last five games. For the season, he's at 21 long balls, 67 RBI, 80 runs scored, six stolen bases and a .274/.355/.479 slash line through 122 contests.

ANALYSIS
With Arizona trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Marte tagged Aroldis Chapman for a solo shot to left field to tie the score. The long ball was his 20th of the campaign, just the second season in his career that he has reached that mark. The other time was in 2019, when Marte went deep 32 times and drove in 92 runs. He'll be hard-pressed to reach those totals this year, but with 20 homers and 63 RBI, he's already posted his best numbers in those categories since that 2019 season.

The 29-year-old is slashing .284/.359/.495 with 18 home runs, 58 RBI, 73 runs scored and six stolen bases through 107 contests, though he's gone just 3-for-25 (.120) over seven games in August.
Aug 8, 2023
Returns to lineup
Marte (quad) is starting at second base Tuesday against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Left quadricep tightness forced Marte to make an early exit from Sunday's game against the Twins, but his injury will not end up costing him a start. However, Marte has been in a slump recently, going 0-for-16 at the plate across his last five games.

Part of sloppy effort
Marte went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Friday's 7-2 loss to the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Marte scored the Diamondbacks' first run on a wild pitch after hitting a leadoff double in the fourth inning, but that was not enough to offset the damage he did in the field. A second-inning error led to a run, then he misplayed a potential double-play groundball and had a throwing error during Toronto's five-run seventh inning. In addition to Marte's foibles, two Arizona baserunners ran into two outs and another was caught stealing. Marte's minus-two outs above average ranks tied for 30th among MLB second basemen.

Jul 5, 2023
Out due to back issue
Marte is out of the lineup Wednesday versus the Mets due to lower-back soreness, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

ANALYSIS
The Diamondbacks hadn't seen a left-handed starter in nearly two weeks, during which Geraldo Perdomo was elevated to leadoff. It was unclear if Perdomo would handle the role full time, but it appears Marte retained the spot atop the order against lefties, as he'd been doing all season.

But the second baseman wasn't done yet, driving home Jake McCarthy with an RBI single in the fifth before coming around to score himself during a four-run inning for the Diamondbacks as they retook the lead. Marte scored three times in the contest and has now homered in three of his five games, collecting nine RBI over that stretch. Marte homered in the first inning to give the Diamondbacks an early and later had the first of two consecutive infield singles that resulted in a run. Prior to the second of the those infield hits, Marte and Josh Rojas executed a double steal, putting a runner in scoring position for Corbin Carroll to knock in. Marte heated up in May, posting a .323 average (21-for-65) with 10 walks over 17 games.
May 17, 2023
Day off Wednesday
Marte is not in the Diamondbacks' lineup for Wednesday's tilt in Oakland.
ANALYSIS
Marte will get a breather with it being a day game after a night game. Josh Rojas will slide over to second base and Emmanuel Rivera gets a start at third base.
May 17, 2023
Three-hit night in loss
Marte went 3-for-7 with a stolen base and a run scored in Tuesday's 9-8 extra-innings loss to Oakland.
ANALYSIS
After a slow start to the season, Marte is seeing the ball better and hit safely in 12 of 14 games during the month of May (17-for-57, .298). Along with that modest run, Marte has improved his on-base ability, walking eight times to fuel a .382 OBP.
May 3, 2023
Homers again Wednesday
Marte went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, two RBI, two runs and two walks in Wednesday's 12-7 win at Texas.
ANALYSIS
Marte had just two home runs and six RBI in his first 24 games of the season, but he's surpassed and doubled up those numbers over the past four contests with three long balls and six runs driven in. The 29-year-old typically hits second against right-handed pitchers and leadoff against lefties, so his run scoring is likely to be more consistent than his RBI production.
May 3, 2023
Mashes fourth homer
Marte went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI in Tuesday's 6-4 loss against the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Marte started the scoring with a first-inning home run. He picked up his second RBI on a sac fly in the second inning. Marte has come across to score 17 runs in 27 games this season, as he hits second in a Diamondbacks lineup producing the 10th most runs in baseball.
Apr 29, 2023
Sitting Saturday
Marte is not in Saturday's lineup against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
He hit his third homer of the season in the first game of the series in Coors Field but will head to the bench against righty Noah Davis. Josh Rojas is starting at second base while Emmanuel Rivera starts at the hot corner. Marte has a .311/.347/.556 slash line with two home runs, nine strikeouts and one walk in his last 12 games.
Apr 29, 2023
Clobbers third homer of seaosn
Marte went 1-for-4 with one home run, two RBI and one run scored in Friday's victory over the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Marte's 435-foot long ball broke the ice in the third inning, giving Arizona a 1-0 lead. The former Mariner now has three homers on the season, and his well on pace to pass his total of 12 from last year. The infielder is currently slashing .258/.298/.464.
Apr 22, 2023
Three more hits
Marte went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in Friday's 9-0 win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Marte's bat stayed hot after getting a day off Thursday. The second baseman has a five-game hit streak, including four consecutive multi-hit efforts. He's 10-for-22 with a double, triple, home run, four RBI and four runs scored during his streak.
Apr 20, 2023
Getting breather Thursday
Marte is not in the lineup Thursday against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Marte will grab a bit of rest after rattling off three straight multi-hit games in St. Louis. Geraldo Perdomo is playing second base and batting ninth Thursday versus San Diego. Nick Ahmed is at shortstop and hitting eighth.
Apr 18, 2023
Delivers two run in return
Marte went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Monday's 6-3 win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Marte delivered Josh Rojas, who had doubled to lead off the game, then gave the Diamondbacks a 2-1 lead in the seventh with his second homer of the season. His bat came around during the second full week of baseball, as Marte has batted .296 (8-for-29) with four extra-base hits over the last seven games.
Apr 16, 2023
Sitting against Marlins
Marte is out of the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Marlins, Paige Leckie of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte takes a seat after going 1-for-7 over the first two games of the series. Geraldo Perdomo will handle second base duties and hit second in his absence.
Apr 9, 2023
Gets rest Sunday
Marte is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Marte will received a day of rest against the Dodgers on Sunday after going 3-for-5 with a homer and three runs scored in Saturday's victory for the Diamondbacks. Gerardo Perdomo will get the start at second base and hit eighth for the series finale.
Apr 9, 2023
Swats first homer
Marte went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, a double and three total runs in Saturday's 12-8 win over the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Los Angeles took a four-run lead after the first half-inning, but Arizona began to claw back in the bottom of the frame when Marte scored following a one-out double. The Diamondbacks then claimed the lead in the second when Marte's two-run shot made it 5-4. The second baseman's big game raised his season slash line to .243/.263/.459, and he's now gotten at least one hit in six straight games.
Apr 7, 2023
Extends hit streak
Marte went 1-for-4 with a double in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Marte had a leadoff double in the eighth inning and reached third base on a wild pitch but was stranded there. The hit extended a modest batting streak to four games, during which he's 4-for-17 with three two-baggers. Marte is batting .179 (5-for-28) with one run and one stolen base through seven games.
Mar 25, 2023
Back in action
Marte (illness) will lead off and play second base in Saturday's Cactus League game against the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Marte had been scratched due to illness Thursday but is ready for game action two days later. He's gone 4-for-19 at the plate in spring training, plus an additional 2-for-8 at the World Baseball Classic.
Mar 24, 2023
Scratched Thursday
Marte was a scratch from Thursday's spring game due to illness, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports. The illness is not believed to be COVID-related.
ANALYSIS
Marte returned from the World Baseball Classic earlier this week and went 2-for-6 with a double and a triple before bowing out of Thursday's game. Prior to the WBC, the second baseman had two hits over 13 at-bats.
Mar 20, 2023
Returns from WBC
Marte went 1-for-4 with a double in Sunday's spring game against Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
This was Marte's first game since returning from the World Baseball Classic. He had a couple of hard-hit balls, including the double and a 105.8 mph lineout to center field, per Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. Marte had been slumping prior to playing in the WBC, so perhaps the hard-hit balls are a sign his swing is coming around.
Mar 16, 2023
Slumping spring
Marte is batting .154 (2-for-13) with one double, three walks, one RBI and one run scored over five spring games.
ANALYSIS
Marte is currently at the World Baseball Classic as part of Team Dominican Republic. When he returns to MLB action, the 29-year-old will be Arizona's primary second baseman. After a brief dalliance as a center fielder, the Diamondbacks decided to move him back to second base due to injuries that were perceived as a result of him playing the outfield. As an infielder in 2022, Marte played 137 games but his .728 OPS was his lowest output since 2016.
Sep 30, 2022
Season over
Marte was placed on the injured list Friday.
ANALYSIS
He was originally listed as part of Friday's lineup, so it's unclear what the exact injury is, but Marte hasn't been 100 percent healthy for much of the season. Buddy Kennedy, who was recalled in a corresponding move, could get some opportunities over the final days of the season.
Sep 21, 2022
Riding pine Wednesday
Marte isn't in the lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Marte will get a breather after going 2-for-7 with a home run and three runs scored between both games of Tuesday's doubleheader. In his place, Sergio Alcantara will start at second base and bat sixth.
Sep 21, 2022
Homers in nightcap
Marte started at DH and went 1-for-3 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch, a solo home run and a second run scored in a 5-2 win over the Dodgers in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
ANALYSIS
Marte helped the Diamondbacks rebound from a gut-punch loss in the matinee. It was the 12th home run in 129 games for Marte, who went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the first game. That he played both ends of the doubleheader is encouraging, given all the issues Marte's had with hamstring injuries this season.
Sep 17, 2022
Not in Saturday's lineup
Marte will hit the bench Saturday against San Diego.
ANALYSIS
Marte sits after starting five straight games. He isn't having a particularly strong September, slashing .188/.250/.333 in 14 games. Josh Rojas will be the second baseman Saturday.
Sep 16, 2022
Snaps homer drought in victory
Marte went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Thursday's 4-0 win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Marte hit the first of three Arizona solo homers in the contest, smashing a 423-foot shot in the fourth inning. It was his first long ball since July 27, a span of 36 games. After going deep 32 times in 2019, Marte has hit only 27 homers in 260 contests since.
Sep 11, 2022
Not part of Sunday's lineup
Marte is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Marte knocked in a run each of the last two days, but he will get a day off amid a 4-for-37 (.108) stretch at the plate. Josh Rojas will cover the keystone Sunday in Marte's place.
Sep 11, 2022
Delivers lone run
Marte started at designated hitter and went 1-for-2 with an RBI in Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Marte drove in Arizona's only run with a fourth-inning single. It was the 47th RBI for Marte, who snapped an 0-for-18 run with the hit. He was eventually ejected in the seventh inning, along with manager Torey Lovullo, for arguing a strike call. If Lovullo sticks with the plan he mentioned in August -- Marte would play two of three contests in Colorado -- the infielder should get Sunday off after playing the first two games of the series.
Sep 10, 2022
Plays Friday
Marte started at second base and went 0-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored in Friday's 13-10 loss to Colorado.
ANALYSIS
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo indicated Marte would get a day off during the three-game set in Denver, which means fantasy managers should expect a day off Saturday or Sunday. The day off is due to Marte's history of hamstring injuries occurring in Colorado, but the manager could also give him a break amid a slump. Marte is hitless over his last 17 at-bats.
Sep 8, 2022
Day off coming this weekend
Marte will play two of the three games in Colorado this weekend, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. The Diamondbacks begin a three-game set in Denver on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Marte has an injury history at Coors Field, including his latest hamstring in mid-August. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said at that time that Marte would likely get one day off the next time the team travels to Colorado.
Sep 4, 2022
Gets Sunday off
Marte is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Josh Rojas will play second base and Jake McCarthy will handle designated-hitter duties while Marte gets some maintenance in the series finale. Marte had started each of the previous six games, going 5-for-23 with four doubles, two walks, three runs and one RBI during that stretch.
Aug 30, 2022
Returns to field duty
Marte started at second base and went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, an RBI and two runs scored in Monday's 13-7 win over Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
Marte was restricted to designated hitter and pinch hitter roles since Aug. 14, but he returned to the field just in time to accommodate Arizona's callup of top prospect Corbin Carroll. Opening up the DH slot allows manager Torey Lovullo to fill up with the outfield with young guns Carroll, Alex Thomas and Daulton Varsho while giving Jake McCarthy's hot bat a home in the lineup.
Aug 28, 2022
Gets rest Sunday
Marte is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Marte had served as Arizona's designated hitter in each of the past five games, going 3-for-22 with a walk, two RBI and a run over those contests. Rookie Stone Garrett will fill in for him in the series finale.
Aug 21, 2022
Fairly quiet in return
Marte went 1-for-5 with a strikeout in Sunday's 6-4 loss to the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Marte missed six games with a left hamstring injury. The lackluster return to action put him at a .257/.341/.431 slash line through 431 plate appearances this year. He's added 10 home runs, 42 RBI, 56 runs scored and four stolen bases, though he shouldn't be expected to run much since he's had hamstring issues off and on throughout the year. If Marte continues to serve as the designated hitter, Josh Rojas and Emmanuel Rivera should both be able to fit into the lineup regularly at second base and third base, respectively.
Aug 21, 2022
Back in starting nine at DH
Marte (hamstring) will serve as the Diamondbacks' designated hitter and No. 3 batter in Sunday's game against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
He'll put an end to a six-game absence due to a left hamstring injury as he slots back in a non-defensive role. Because Marte already missed time earlier this season due to the hamstring issue, the Diamondbacks may not be inclined to rush him back into his everyday role at second base. Josh Rojas will man the keystone Sunday.
Aug 20, 2022
Remains out Saturday
Marte (hamstring) is not in Saturday's lineup against St. Louis.
ANALYSIS
Marte made a pinch-hit appearance Wednesday, but he has not started a game since injuring his hamstring during last Sunday's contest and leaving the game early. Prior to his injury, he had posted an OPS of just .541 over 50 plate appearances since the beginning of August.
Aug 19, 2022
Still out Friday
Marte (hamstring) is not in Friday's lineup against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Marte left Sunday's game with a hamstring injury and appeared Wednesday as a pinch hitter. He is hitting .213/.275/.255 with zero home runs and zero steals in 13 games this month.
Aug 18, 2022
Missing from lineup again
Marte (hamstring) is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Marte pinch hit in Wednesday's game, but he is not ready for a full nine innings just yet. Josh Rojas will again man the keystone for the Diamondbacks.
Aug 18, 2022
Serves as pinch hitter
Marte (hamstring) entered Wednesday's game as a pinch hitter and went 0-for-1 in a 3-2 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Marte pinch hit for Alex Thomas in the seventh but did not play the field beyond that plate appearance. Daulton Varsho replaced Thomas in center field. His appearance as a pinch hitter suggests Marte's hamstring injury is a minor one, and he could return to the starting lineup before the end of the week.
Aug 17, 2022
Sitting again Wednesday
Marte (hamstring) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old suffered the injury Sunday against the Rockies and will be sideline Wednesday for the third consecutive contest. Manager Torey Lovullo previously indicated the injury wouldn't necessitate a trip to the injured list, so Marte should still be considered day-to-day.
Aug 16, 2022
Out again Tuesday
Marte (hamstring) is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Marte's injury prevented him from starting Monday, and it will keep him in a reserve role for at least another night. Manager Torey Lovullo downplayed the injury when asked, so Marte should have a chance to get back in there Wednesday.
Aug 16, 2022
Injury may not be serious
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Marte's hamstring does not warrant a trip to the injured list, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte was removed from Sunday's game in Colorado during the ninth inning when he felt tightness in his left hamstring. Lovullo said there are no plans for him to undergo imaging, a sign that the team feels the injury is not serious. The Diamondbacks noted this was the third time Marte injured his hamstring while playing in Denver, and Lovullo said the second baseman will likely get one day off every time the team travels to Colorado. The Diamondbacks will be in Denver for a third and final time from Sept. 9 through 11.
Aug 15, 2022
Not part of Monday's lineup
Marte (hamstring) is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The extent of Marte's injury is not yet known, but it will force him to the bench for at least one night. Josh Rojas will man the keystone in Marte's place.
Aug 15, 2022
Leaves with hamstring injury
Marte was removed from Sunday's win over the Rockies in the ninth inning with tightness in his left hamstring after running the bases.
ANALYSIS
Marte has oft-injured hamstrings, but at this point the severity is unclear. The Diamondbacks are expected to evaluate the second baseman ahead of Monday's series opener in San Francisco. Marte injured a hamstring in June and was limited to DH-only duty for about a month before playing the field again after the All-Star break.
Aug 11, 2022
Sitting Thursday
Marte is not in the starting lineup Thursday versus the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Marte will take a seat after he went 7-for-23 with two doubles, six RBI and three runs scored over the last six games. Sergio Alcantara will start at second base and bat eighth in the series finale.
Aug 9, 2022
Drives in two in win
Marte went 1-for-4 with two RBI in Monday's 3-0 win over the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Marte helped give Diamondbacks closer Ian Kennedy some added cushion with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, when he poked a base hit past a diving Oneil Cruz to plate two runs. Though he often occupies a spot in the heart of the order for Arizona, Marte now has just three multi-RBI games since the beginning of July, and his production in other categories has been rather empty as well. Over the past five weeks, he's managed only six home runs, zero stolen bases and 18 runs while batting .252 over a 31-game stretch.
Jul 23, 2022
Smacks homer in big win
Marte went 2-for-4 with a home run, a triple, four RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 10-1 win over the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Marte provided a big three-run homer in the third inning and added a sacrifice fly in the eighth. This was his third multi-hit effort in his last five games, and he's gone deep four times in his last seven. Notably, the 28-year-old started at second base -- lingering effects from a hamstring injury had kept him limited to designated hitter for much of the last month. He owns a .274/.364/.466 slash line with nine homers, 33 RBI, 47 runs scored, four stolen bases, two triples and 26 doubles in 340 plate appearances.
Jul 16, 2022
Goes yard in three-hit effort
Marte went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Friday's 5-3 loss to the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Marte was involved in both of Arizona's scoring plays Friday. He hit a solo shot in the first inning and was on base when Christian Walker hit a two-run blast in the fourth. This was Marte's third homer in the last four games, a span in which he's gone 7-for-15 (.467). He's up to a .276/.368/.459 slash line with eight long balls, 29 RBI, 45 runs scored and four stolen bases in 80 contests. He was caught stealing in a loss to the Giants on Wednesday, which was his first attempted steal since June 15 -- that suggests he's starting to move past a hamstring injury that has nagged him since late June.
Jul 14, 2022
Caught stealing Wednesday
Marte was caught stealing to end the first inning of Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Giants.
ANALYSIS
This was Marte's first attempted steal since returning from a hamstring injury June 21. The hamstring continues to be bothersome and limited him to DH duty, but the attempted swipe suggests Marte is feeling better.
Jul 14, 2022
Slugs seventh homer
Marte went 2-for-4 with a solo home run Wednesday against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Marte took Sam Long yard in the third inning to record his seventh home run of the season. He returned to the lineup after getting Tuesday to allow an extra day of rest for his lingering hamstring injury. The issue has caused him to serve as Arizona's designated hitter exclusively since June 21. In 18 games since, Marte has managed a .268 average with three home runs, six RBI and 10 runs scored. Overall, Marte owns a .269/.363/.444 line across 322 plate appearances for the season.
Jul 13, 2022
Still feeling hamstring
Marte was given a rest day Tuesday, one day after legging out a double-play groundball, Jose M. Romero of the Arizona Republic reports. He was available off the bench.
ANALYSIS
Limited to designated hitter the last three weeks after sustaining a hamstring injury that continues to linger, Marte hustled to avoid grounding into a double play Monday, which may have been the reason for Tuesday's off day. "He's giving it all he can," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. "We're trying to have him slow down, but he gave us everything he could. It was a big, big play. You know, we talked about winning inches here. That was one." Lovullo mentioned earlier this week that Marte may get back onto the field in a game before the All-Star break.
Jul 12, 2022
Takes seat Tuesday
Marte is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Daulton Varsho will step in as Arizona's designated hitter, the spot Marte has exclusively occupied since returning to action June 21 after a stint on the injured list due to a Grade 1 hamstring strain. Manager Torey Lovullo recently suggested that Marte could soon be ready to play second base, with the Diamondbacks ideally breaking him back into the infield at some point over their final few games before the All-Star break.
Jul 12, 2022
May get innings at 2B
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Marte may begin playing second base in a game prior to the All-Star break, Jose M. Romero of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte has served as a designated hitter the last three weeks since a hamstring injury cropped up mid-June. Lovullo said he'll try to get Marte an inning or two late in a game before the break but added there's a schedule mapped out to get him back on the field after the All-Star game. The discomfort Marte is feeling is much less than before, but the Diamondbacks remain cautious.
Jul 8, 2022
Not in Friday's lineup
Marte isn't starting Friday against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Marte started in the last four games and went 4-for-13 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI. However, he'll take a seat while Cooper Hummel serves as the designated hitter and bats sixth.
Jul 8, 2022
Removed again for PR
Marte went 1-for-2 with two walks and was removed for a pinch runner in the eighth inning of Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
It's been three weeks since Marte first suffered a hamstring injury, and Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo continues to play it safe. This was the second consecutive game he was removed for a pinch runner in the late innings. Marte has not played the field since returning from the injury.
Jul 7, 2022
Leaves for pinch runner
Marte started at designated hitter and went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 7-5 loss to the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo continues to use Marte at DH, fearing the aggravation of a recent hamstring injury if he plays the field. That fear was apparently at play in the ninth inning when Lovullo removed Marte for a pinch runner after the DH singled home a run and became the tying run. Marte has not played in the field since June 21.
Jul 3, 2022
Sits in series finale
Marte is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Marte will head to the bench for only the second time since he made his return from a hamstring injury June 21. Because the injury still inhibits his lateral movement in the infield, Marte has served exclusively as a designated hitter in his eight starts since returning to the lineup, going a collective 6-for-27 with a home run, nine walks, four runs and two RBI over those games. Cooper Hummel will serve as Arizona's DH in the series finale Sunday.
Jul 3, 2022
Knocks fifth homer
Marte went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Saturday's 11-7 loss to the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Marte went 0-for-8 in his previous two games, and his homer Saturday was his first extra-base hit in eight contests since he returned from a hamstring injury. The 28-year-old is expected to remain as the designated hitter, as he's been kept out of the field since his return. The second baseman is slashing .264/.351/.424 with five homers, 24 RBI, 37 runs scored, four stolen bases and 23 doubles in 285 plate appearances. Given how cautious Arizona has been with the star infielder, it would be surprising to see him test his luck on the basepaths much in the near future.
Jul 2, 2022
Remains DH through weekend
Marte will continue to serve as the designated hitter at least through the current series against the Rockies, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Diamondbacks are being extra cautious with Marte, who sustained a hamstring injury more than two weeks ago. He's since returned but served as the DH in the seven games he's played. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo mentioned giving Marte a day off in the coming days.
Jun 29, 2022
On base four times
Marte went 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored in Tuesday's 7-6 win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Marte once again served as the designated hitter as he works his way back from a hamstring injury. He was never tested on the base paths, scoring easily from second base on Buddy Kennedy's double in the seventh inning and walking home from third base when Carson Kelly was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. This was the fifth straight game in which he's served as the DH and is 4-for-15 with eight walks during that stretch.
Jun 27, 2022
Not full speed yet
Marte is taking ground balls and hitting during practice but is not yet up to full speed after missing time due to a hamstring injury, Jose M. Romero of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte served as the designated hitter for the fifth consecutive game played Sunday. The Diamondbacks are being careful with their starting second baseman, who's had a history over hamstring injuries. The team is off Monday, so the next chance for Marte to take the field is Tuesday against the Padres.
Jun 25, 2022
Serves as DH again
Marte started at designated hitter and went 0-for-2 with two walks in Friday's 5-1 loss to the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Marte hasn't played the field since injuring his hamstring last weekend. He served at DH on Wednesday and again Friday. Jake Hager filled in at second base with Buddy Kennedy nursing a wrist injury.
Jun 22, 2022
Not in Wednesday's lineup
Marte isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Padres, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte returned to the lineup Tuesday against San Diego and went 0-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts. He'll get a breather while Jake Hager starts at the keystone and bats eighth.
Jun 22, 2022
No hits in return
Marte (hamstring) went 0-for-4 with a walk and two strikeouts in Tuesday's 3-2 extra-innings loss to the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Marte didn't get on base until the 11th inning, and he was promptly lifted for a pinch runner (pitcher Luke Weaver). Marte missed four games before serving as the designated hitter Tuesday, and he may need to stick in that role for a little longer before returning to his regular position at second base. He's now batting .264 on the year after Tuesday's lackluster performance at the dish.
Jun 21, 2022
Re-enters lineup as DH
Marte (hamstring) will serve as Arizona's designated hitter and No. 3 batter in Tuesday's game in San Diego.
ANALYSIS
Though he'll be eased back into action in a non-defensive role, Marte demonstrated enough progress in his recovery from a left hamstring strain to put an end to his four-game absence. Arizona will likely see how Marte's hamstring responds to any baserunning he might do Tuesday before deciding whether he's fit to return to the field at his normal spot at second base in Wednesday's series finale.
Jun 20, 2022
Remains out of lineup Monday
Marte (hamstring) isn't starting Monday against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Marte is expected to return at some point during the Diamondbacks' three-game series against the Padres, but he'll remain out of the lineup for a fourth consecutive game. Buddy Kennedy is starting at the keystone and batting sixth.
Jun 19, 2022
Expected back for Padres series
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo expects Marte (hamstring) to be available during the upcoming three-game series against San Diego, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports. The series begins Monday.
ANALYSIS
Marte was held out of the weekend series against the Twins due to a Grade 1 left hamstring strain. The Diamondbacks downplayed the injury, as Lovullo described it as "very, very mild." The club initially didn't request an MRI but eventually did when the second baseman didn't respond as quickly as hoped. Jake Hager started at second base Friday while Buddy Kennedy started Saturday and Sunday.
Jun 19, 2022
On bench again Sunday
Marte (hamstring) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Marte's Grade 1 left hamstring strain hasn't forced him to the 10-day injured list yet, but he'll miss a third straight game in any event. Buddy Kennedy will draw the start at second base in place of Marte, who can be viewed as day-to-day heading into Monday's series opener in San Diego.
Jun 18, 2022
Day-to-day with Grade 1 strain
Marte has a Grade 1 left lateral hamstring strain and is considered day-to-day, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He has been sidelined since Wednesday and was hitting .306/.390/.500 with one home run over his last 10 games. The team will see how Marte progresses over the next day or two before deciding if a roster move needs to be made.
Jun 18, 2022
Remains out of lineup
Marte (hamstring) isn't starting Saturday against Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Marte is out of the lineup for a second consecutive game after exiting Wednesday's game against the Reds due to hamstring tightness. Whether he's available off the bench remains to be seen, but Buddy Kennedy will start at the keystone and bat sixth.
Jun 17, 2022
On bench Friday
Marte (hamstring) isn't in the lineup Friday against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Marte exited Wednesday's game against the Reds due to hamstring tightness and will be out of the lineup following Thursday's off day. Jake Hager is starting at the keystone and batting eighth.
Jun 15, 2022
Managing tight hamstring
Marte was removed from Wednesday's win over the Reds with tightness in his hamstring, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run before being replaced in the field for the ninth inning, and manager Torey Lovullo labeled the second baseman's removal a precautionary move. The Diamondbacks have a scheduled day off Thursday, so the 28-year-old will have a full day to recover ahead of Friday's series opener versus the Twins.
Jun 11, 2022
Catches breather Saturday
Marte is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Marte does not sit much, but he will get a breather after snapping a three-game multi-hit streak Friday. Jake Hager will cover the keystone Saturday in Marte's place.
Jun 8, 2022
Goes deep in loss
Marte went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 14-8 loss to the Reds.
ANALYSIS
Marte's blast was part of Arizona's five-run eighth inning. After just two homers over his first 49 games, Marte has gone deep twice in the last five.
Jun 4, 2022
Slaps pair of doubles
Marte went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored in Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Marte is on a 16-game hitting streak, and he was the only Diamondback to record multiple hits Saturday. He's 23-for-59 (.390) during the streak. The second baseman hasn't enjoyed over-the-fence power with just three home runs in 50 contests, but he's up to 19 doubles. He's posted a .268/.338/.432 slash line with 18 RBI, 25 runs scored and three stolen bases.
Jun 4, 2022
Ends HR drought
Marte went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's 8-6 win over Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Marte's two-run shot in the fifth inning extended his hitting streak to 15 games and ended a stretch of 20 contests without a homer. Since swatting 32 home runs in 2019, Marte's power has been held in check by missed time due to injury. He's been healthy thus far but has just three home runs over 49 games.
Jun 1, 2022
Extends hitting streak off bench
Marte went 1-for-2 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 8-7 extra-inning win over Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Marte was initially given the day off, but he entered as a pinch hitter for Jake Hager in the seventh inning, grounding into a double play. He stayed in the game at second base and delivered a single and a stolen base in Arizona's ninth-inning rally to tie the game. Marte's hitting streak is up to 11 contests, a span in which he's gone 15-for-43 (.349). For the season, the veteran infielder is up to a .260/.325/.405 slash line with two home runs, 16 RBI, 23 runs scored and three stolen bases through 191 plate appearances.
May 31, 2022
Day off Tuesday
Marte will sit Tuesday against Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Marte owns a 12-game hitting streak, a stretch in which he's slashed .383/.408/.489. He'll get a rest Tuesday as Jake Hager takes over at second base.
May 31, 2022
Streak reaches double digits
Marte went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, two RBI and two runs scored in Monday's 6-2 win over Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Marte's first-inning single extended a hit streak to 10 consecutive games, during which he's 14-for-41 with four doubles and eight runs scored. He's still below career norms in several major statistical categories, but that just speaks to the depth he fell during an April that saw him slash .146/.211/.256. The 28-year-old flipped the script in May with a line of .360/.424/.539 while putting together streaks of nine and 10 games.
May 29, 2022
Riding eight-game hitting streak
Marte went 1-for-4 with a double in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
The two-bagger extended Marte's hitting streak to eight games, leaving him one contest of matching his season-long total. In spite of the two eight-plus-game hitting streaks, Marte is still sitting on a disappointing .250/.315/.390 slash line for the season. He'll look to stay hot in the series finale Sunday, when he'll be batting third as Arizona's designated hitter.
May 21, 2022
Returns to lineup
Marte is starting Saturday against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Marte has dealt with a sore hand recently, and he was out of the lineup for three of the last four games. However, he'll start at the keystone and bat third during Saturday's matchup, and he's also expected to start Sunday. Since the start of May, the 28-year-old has hit .365 with a home run, a triple, seven doubles, 11 runs, five RBI and a stolen base over 16 games.
May 21, 2022
Team being cautious
Marte is expected to play Saturday and Sunday against the Cubs, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Eyebrows were raised when the Diamondbacks gave Marte the day off Friday. He had missed games Tuesday and Wednesday with a sore left hand but returned to play Thursday. Apparently, the club was being cautious in not wanting the second baseman to play back-to-back game after having just returned from injury.
May 20, 2022
Not starting Friday
Marte is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Marte returned to the lineup Thursday after missing two games with a sore hand, and he'll head back to the bench for Friday's matchup with Chicago, though there's been no indication he aggravated the injury. Yonny Hernandez will man second base in his place.
May 20, 2022
Returns to lineup
Marte went 1-for-4 with a run scored in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS

May 19, 2022
Back in lineup Thursday
Marte (hand) is starting Thursday against the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Marte missed the last two games due to left hand soreness, but he'll start at the keystone and bat third during Thursday's series opener at Wrigley Field. Over his last five games, he's gone 7-for-17 with three doubles, three runs and three RBI.
May 19, 2022
Could return Thursday
Marte said his sore left hand is feeling better and could play Thursday against the Cubs, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte sustained the injury during the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader then was scratched for the night cap and didn't play Wednesday. Jake Hager replaced Marte at second base for both games.
May 18, 2022
Not starting Wednesday
Marte (hand) isn't starting Wednesday against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Marte was scratched from the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader due to a sore left hand, and he'll be out of the lineup for a second straight game. It's not yet clear whether he'll be available off the bench, but Jake Hager will start at the keystone and bat ninth.
May 17, 2022
Nursing sore hand
Marte was scratched from Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Dodgers due to left hand soreness, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte came off the bench during Game 1 and apparently suffered the injury during his last at-bat, and he was spotted icing his hand between the two contests. The 28-year-old should be considered day-to-day until more information is available on the injury.
May 17, 2022
Scratched from Game 2
Marte was scratched from the lineup for Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Marte was originally in the lineup for Tuesday's nightcap but was absent from an updated starting nine for undisclosed reasons. He came off the bench in Game 1 and went 2-for-2 with two RBI, and it's unlikely the Diamondbacks would opt to keep him out of the lineup for both games of the twin bill without some sort of injury.
May 17, 2022
Resting for afternoon game
Marte will sit for the afternoon portion of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Marte has hit .333/.419/.630 over his last 15 games, a dramatic reversal from the .135/.207/.203 line he recorded over his first 20. He won't be asked to start twice in one day Tuesday, so Jake Hager will get the call at second base for the afternoon contest.
May 10, 2022
Stays hot, swats HR
Marte went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's 4-3 win over the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Marte's sixth-inning blast was the game-deciding hit. He continued to put a season-opening slump in the past, hitting a ninth straight game (13-for-32, .406) with an extra-base hit in eight of those contests. The improved bat may also have calmed him in the field, where he ranks lower half among second baseman in outs above average and success rate, per MLB's Baseball Savant. That calm was evidenced by a game-ending double play on a ball hit sharply to his left -- the kind of play he hadn't made on multiple occasions over the past month.
May 9, 2022
Climbs above .200
Marte went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Sunday's 4-0 win over Colorado.
ANALYSIS
Marte extended his hitting streak to eight games and climbed above .200 for the first time in three weeks. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo told Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic that Marte has gotten "a little bit of his swagger back" at the plate. "He's not there quite yet. But he's checking off the pitches he's supposed to. He's starting to impact the ball at certain times in certain situations," the manager added. The second baseman is 11-for-28 (.393) with five walks, seven extra-base hits and seven runs scored during the eight-game run.
May 8, 2022
Hits in seven straight
Marte went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Saturday's 4-1 loss to Colorado.
ANALYSIS

May 5, 2022
Runs hit streak to five
Marte went 2-for-2 with two walks, a double and two runs scored in Wednesday's 8-7 win over the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Marte is still stuck below .200, but he extended a hit streak to five games, during which he's 6-for-18 with five extra-base hits, three walks and six runs scored. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo has moved him around the order in effort to jumpstart the bat, and his recent run batting sixth against right-handers appears to have helped.
May 2, 2022
Takes seat Monday
Marte is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Marte will sit for the second time this season after going 3-for-26 with a solo home run and no other RBI while starting each of Arizona's last seven games. The poor stretch at the plate was a continuance of a rough start to the season for Marte, who enters Monday's contest with a .151/.213/.279 slash line across 94 plate appearances.
Apr 30, 2022
Breaks tie with solo shot
Marte went 1-for-4 with a solo homer Saturday against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Marte broke a scoreless tie in the eighth inning, leading off the inning with a homer off Miles Mikolas. The homer was just the first of the season for Marte, who's still hitting a miserable .146/.211/.256 on the year.
Apr 27, 2022
Dropped to sixth
Marte batted sixth in the order for the first time this season in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Dodgers. He went 0-for-3 with a walk.
ANALYSIS
Marte consistently batted second this season until being dropped to sixth Tuesday. The move appears to be a result of Marte's early slump, designed to take pressure off him. The 28-year-old, who signed a lucrative five-year deal this spring, is zero for his last 15 at-bats and batting .149 over 67 at-bats overall.
Apr 25, 2022
Expands strike zone
Marte has a 32.2 chase percentage, up nearly five points over his career average, per Baseball Savant.
ANALYSIS
Marte was given a scheduled day off Sunday, which came at an appropriate time for the struggling infielder. He entered the game batting .169 (10-for-59) with a 27.3 K%, well above career norms. The issues at the plate may be impacting him in other areas. He muffed a couple of balls in the field Saturday -- not the first one he's kicked this season -- and Marte's expanding the strike zone as seen by his chase rate. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo made note of Marte's issues, but downplayed it to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. "I know it looks awkward and that it's a hotspot right now," Lovullo said. "But, for me, it's really not." Look for Marte back in the lineup Monday when the Diamondbacks begin a series at home against the Dodgers.
Apr 24, 2022
Receives first day off
Marte is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Marte started the first 15 games of the season but will take a seat Sunday with a .496 OPS and 27.3 percent strikeout rate through 66 plate appearances. Geraldo Perdomo will cover the keystone in his place for the series finale.
Apr 21, 2022
Joins .200 club
Marte went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's 11-2 win over the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Marte is the latest Diamondback regular to push is average to .200 or better, making him one four players at or above the Mendoza line. He barely missed a home run on his first bat before popping out, but the second baseman later was involved in a pair of rallies in a breakout performance for the team. The Diamondbacks plated half as many runs in this one game than they had in the previous 11.
Apr 13, 2022
Plates two runs
Marte went 1-for-3 with two RBI and was hit by a pinch in Wednesday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Marte knocked in his first two runs of the season, neither one coming as the result of a base hit. He was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the second inning, then his bases-loaded, walkoff sacrifice fly in the 10th produced the winning run. The Diamondbacks are still struggling to hit -- Wednesday's six-hit output (all singles) were a season high -- but they are working the plate. Their nine walks Wednesday featured prominently in both scoring rallies, and they lead MLB with 33 free passes over six games.
Apr 10, 2022
Swipes first bag
Marte went 1-for-3 with a double, walk and a stolen base in a 10-5 loss to San Diego on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Marte doubled and stole third in the first inning and later tacked on a walk in the eighth. Arizona's best player had reached base just once through the first three games of the season and it was even more encouraging to see Marte active on the bases after only 3 steals across 135 games in 2020 and 2021 combined.
Mar 27, 2022
Lands extension with Diamondbacks
Marte signed a five-year, $76 million contract extension with Arizona on Sunday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte has developed into a strong second baseman across the last several seasons, and he'll now have his two upcoming option years guaranteed while remaining under contract with the team through the 2027 season. The 28-year-old appeared in 90 games last year and slashed .318/.377/.532 with 14 homers, 52 runs, 50 RBI and two stolen bases.
Mar 27, 2022
In talks with team
Marte and the Diamondbacks are engaged in talks about a contract extension, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte is under contract for this season with the team holding options for the next two seasons. News of the negotiations was first reported by Robert Murray of Fansided. Since then, Jon Heyman of MLB Network had further details, which include the options years will be guaranteed plus another three more years. The Diamondbacks understand how important Marte is to their offense. He was a key piece in 2019, when Arizona made a late push for a wild card spot, and he slashed 318/.377/.532 with an OPS+ of 143 over 90 games in 2021, a season limited by hamstring injuries. The organization has taken steps to minimize the chances of injury by moving him to second base full time in 2022.
Mar 25, 2022
Gets first hit of preseason
Marte started at second base, batted second and went 1-for-4 in Thursday's spring training game against Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
Marte, who had been delayed by left-eye irritation, delivered his first base hit of the Cactus League in what was his first appearance in the field. As expected, he played second base and batted in the top third of the order. Injuries have been his biggest concern, particularly the nettlesome hamstrings that limited him to 90 games in 2021. That followed a back and wrist injuries the previous two seasons. He told Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic that the focus on second base, which requires less stress than center field, will keep him healthy for the season.
Mar 24, 2022
Set to play field
Marte is expected to make his on-field debut Thursday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Irritation in Marte's left eye limited him at the start of camp and the lone appearance thus far in the Cactus League has been as a designated hitter. When Marte does hit the field, he is expected to line up at second base.
Mar 22, 2022
Hitless in debut
Marte went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in Tuesday's spring training game against the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Marte made his spring debut after dealing with eye irritation that prevented him from working out the first few days of camp. He served as the designated hitter Tuesday but should soon line up at second base, where he's expected to be the Diamondbacks' starter.
Mar 22, 2022
In lineup as expected
Marte (eye) will bat second and serve as the designated hitter as expected Tuesday against Texas, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Mar 21, 2022
Expected to play Tuesday
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo expects Marte (eye) to make his first Cactus League appearance Tuesday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte will serve as the designated hitter Tuesday and eventually get starts at second base, where he's expected to make his primary home in 2022. He ramped up activity toward the end of last week, first batting in a cage then taking live batting practice. The 28-year-old's activity also included fielding high-intensity groundballs.
Mar 20, 2022
Takes live BP
Marte (eye) took live batting practice Saturday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After two consecutive days of batting in a cage, Saturday's session was Marte's first against live pitching since camp started. He's expected to make his spring game-action debut this week.
Mar 19, 2022
Targeting return Monday
Marte (eye) should be a full participant by Monday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte took swings in the batting cage for a second consecutive day Friday then was informed by the eye doctor he's be a full go next week. Marte has been dealing with eye irritation that prevented him from participating in any workouts since camp began.
Mar 18, 2022
Swings in cage
Marte (eye) did not participate in workouts Thursday but did take swings in the batting cage, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte is still bothered by irritation in his left eye but is expected to be a full go soon, per Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. He has yet to participate in a workout since the truncated spring training began earlier this week.
Mar 16, 2022
Misses Tuesday's workout
Marte (eye) missed a second consecutive day of workouts Tuesday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte has irritation in his left eye, which isn't expected to linger too long. At this point, there's no talk of him missing Opening Day.
Mar 14, 2022
Dealing with eye issue
Marte didn't participate in Monday's team workout after experiencing left eye irritation, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte labeled the eye issue as a minor concern and said he expects to be back on the field Tuesday. The 28-year-old switch-hitter is expected to make a full-time move to second base during the upcoming season, after he primarily played center field in 2021.
Mar 12, 2022
Moving back to 2B
Marte is expected to open the season as Arizona's starting second baseman, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The wear and tear of playing center field has finally prompted the Diamondbacks to move Marte back to second base, where he started is career. That move leaves a gaping hole in the outfield, which could be filled by Daulton Varsho.
Oct 3, 2021
Sitting season finale
Marte is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies,
ANALYSIS
Marte started the past eight games but will take a seat for the final game of the season. If the 27-year-old doesn't make an appearance off the bench, he'll finish 2021 with a .319/.378/.534 slash line, 14 homers, 29 doubles, 50 RBI and 52 runs in 89 games. Josh VanMeter will start at the keystone in his place.
Oct 2, 2021
Swats homer Friday
Marte went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to the Rockies on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Marte's 419-foot blast was part of Arizona's seven-run third inning, though even that wasn't enough to prevent the team from registering its 110th loss of the campaign. While Marte has been set back by multiple hamstring injuries this season, he has been the team's best hitter when healthy, slashing .317/.378/.530 with 14 homers, 48 RBI and a pair of stolen bases over 334 at-bats.
Oct 2, 2021
Goes deep in loss
Marte went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 9-7 loss to the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Marte's shot one of three home runs the Diamondbacks hit during the third inning, but starter Humberto Castellanos eventually tired and the bullpen gave it up in the ninth. Marte is finishing up strong, posting an .863 OPS with 10 home runs and 27 RBI in the 51 games since returning from a hamstring injury. He's expected to begin the 2022 season as Arizona's starting second baseman.
Sep 30, 2021
Settles in at second base
Marte started at second base and went 0-for-4 in Wednesday's 1-0 loss to the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Marte started at the keystone for the 10th consecutive game and has played at least an inning there in 12 straight. The Diamondbacks appear to be preparing him as the 2022 starter at second base.
Sep 25, 2021
Three hits, homer
Marte went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional run in a 7-2 triumph over the dodgers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Marte led off the bottom of the first with his 13th long ball of the season, singled in the third and singled and scored in the fifth for his second three-hit game this week. A recent 9-for-20 stretch has contributed to an excellent .297/.398/.541 slash line in 19 September games for the 27-year-old.
Sep 23, 2021
Riding pine Thursday
Marte isn't starting Thursday's game against Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Marte had started each of the last five games, and he hit .350 with four doubles, two runs and an RBI during that time. Jake McCarthy will start in center field and bat eighth.
Sep 22, 2021
Likely to play one position in 2022
The Diamondbacks are expected to have Marte anchored at one position next season instead of bouncing between second base and center field, Steve Gilbert of the Diamondbacks' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte has battled injury issues since the end of 2019, which management believes could be partially related to having him play multiple positions. This is the same refrain we've heard from Arizona's decision makers the last couple of seasons, but they've opted to take advantage of Marte's versatility. "I would think at this stage, we're going to probably zone in a little bit more on one position," Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen said. "That is my gut feeling right now, but I want to hear from the coaches as well." Marte has seen a lot of time at second base over the last week, which could be a sign of things to come. Particularly if they deem outfield prospect Alek Thomas is ready for the majors to start 2022.
Sep 21, 2021
Draws start at second
Marte started at second base and went 3-for-4 with three doubles and an RBI in Monday's 11-4 loss to Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Marte's three doubles give him 26 in 79 games this season and raised his slugging to a team-high .542. This was the third straight start at second base and fourth in the last five contests for Marte, who has been Arizona's primary center fielder this season when healthy. He may not be done as an outfielder, but the Diamondbacks have talked for a couple of seasons about splitting his duties more evenly between the outfield and infield as a way to sustain his long-term health. Daulton Varsho started in center field Monday.
Sep 17, 2021
Heads to bench
Marte will get a rest Friday against Houston.
ANALYSIS
Marte sits after starting 16 straight games, a stretch in which he hit .226/.324/.435 with four homers. Jake McCarthy will take over in center field.
Sep 15, 2021
Enjoys three-hit game
Marte went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and a strikeout in an 8-4 loss to the Dodgers on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Marte was the only Diamondback with success on Tuesday, singling in the fourth and sixth innings and launching a three-run home run in the seventh to bring Arizona within two runs of the lead. The three hits match Marte's total from the last six games combined though the long ball is his sixth in his last 19 games.
Sep 13, 2021
Blasts 11th home run
Marte went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 5-4 win over the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Marte went deep off Erik Swanson in the seventh inning to extend the Diamondbacks' lead to three runs. He extended his on-base streak to nine games, even though he is batting just .194 in that stretch. The 27-year-old is slashing .320/.380/.524 with 11 long balls, 42 RBI and 43 runs scored in 304 plate appearances. Despite playing in just 73 games this season, he is tied for the most home runs on the team.
Sep 5, 2021
Hits homer Saturday
Marte went 1-for-4 with a solo home run, a walk and an additional run scored in Saturday's loss to the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Marte's fourth-inning long ball tied the game 5-5, though it proved to be Arizona's final run in the loss. The 27-year-old has hit a modest 10 homers this season, but six of those have come over his past 20 games, during which he is also slashing .312/.376/.636 with 16 RBI.
Sep 2, 2021
Records three hits in win
Marte went 3-for-5 with two runs scored in Wednesday's 8-3 win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
All three of Marte's hits went for singles. He began a six-run third inning with a base hit to left and came around to score from first off a double from Pavin Smith. The 27-year-old later led off the eighth with another base knock and made his way to third before crossing home on a bases-loaded walk. Marte has logged a hit in 12 of his last 13 games and 18 of his last 21. He has been one of baseball's more productive hitters when healthy but has missed a bunch of time in 2021 with multiple injuries. He now stands at a .344/.395/.549 slash line with 31 extra-base hits, 38 RBI, 38 runs scored, a steal and 19:42 BB:K over 266 plate appearances.
Aug 31, 2021
Clears bases
Marte went 1-for-4 with a grand slam home run in Monday's 7-5 loss to the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Prior to Marte's blast, the Diamondbacks floundered on offense and in the field, which prompted a lecture from manager Torey Lovullo. The manager doesn't need to lecture Marte, whose homer extended his hit streak to 11 games, during which he's 15-for-40 (.375) with four home runs, three doubles and 12 RBI. Going back further, he's reached base safely in 19 consecutive contests.

Marte started in center field and went 1-for-4 in Saturday's 7-0 loss to Philadelphia
ANALYSIS
Marte made his first start since leaving Thursday's game with a hip injury. He entered Friday's game as a pinch hitter then played four innings at second base. It was uncertain if Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo would continue to use Marte in center field -- having his primary position be second base has often been a discussion topic among the team's decision makers -- but it looks like he'll continue on in center.

Enters Friday's game
Marte (hip) entered Friday's game as a pinch hitter and played four innings at second base in a 7-6 extra-inning loss to Philadelphia. He went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run.
ANALYSIS
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo told Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic prior to the game that Marte's hip injury was not serious, adding that he would be available off the bench Friday and expected to start Saturday. It's interesting that Marte played second base, and not his usual home in center field. That could be due to the circumstances of the game, or perhaps the Diamondbacks want the oft-injured Marte playing a less stressful position. After the Diamondbacks waived Asdrubal Cabrera, at-bats are available at second and third base, though the team may want to give more regular infield work to players like Josh Rojas, Josh VanMeter and Drew Ellis.
Aug 27, 2021
Not in Friday's lineup
Marte (hip) isn't starting Friday's game against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Marte was removed from Thursday's game due to right hip discomfort, and it's not yet clear whether he'll be available off the bench. Jake McCarthy will take his place in center field and bat seventh.
Aug 26, 2021
Dealing with hip discomfort
Marte exited Thursday's game against the against the Phillies with right hip discomfort.
ANALYSIS
It's not clear how Marte suffered the injury, or how likely he is to miss extended time. Marte has missed over two months with a pair of hamstring injuries this season, so the team may opt to rest him regularly even if he avoids a serious issue.
Aug 24, 2021
Takes seat Tuesday
Marte is not starting Tuesday against Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Marte enters the day with a hot bat, having gone 8-for-16 with three doubles, a homer and four RBI across the last four games. He'll get a rest Tuesday as Daulton Varsho mans center field.
Aug 21, 2021
Slugs sixth homer
Marte went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and a walk in a loss to the Rockies on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Marte connected on the only homer of the night for Arizona in the fourth inning, drilling a 402-foot shot to right field. The long ball was only the second in his past 33 contests in what has been another season of limited power following Marte's 32-homer season in 2019. The lack of long balls and significant missed time due to injury have limited Marte's fantasy appeal this season despite a standout .342 batting average.
Aug 19, 2021
Retreats to bench
Marte isn't starting Thursday's game against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Marte had drawn starts in each of the last nine games, but he'll get a breather after he went 2-for-11 with a triple, a run and an RBI across his last three appearances. Daulton Varsho will start in center field and bat fifth.
Aug 15, 2021
Doubles twice, scores in win
Marte went 2-for-5 with two doubles, one RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 7-0 win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Marte doubled off Joe Musgrove and knocked in Josh VanMeter in the first inning. In addition, he scored late in the frame. The 27-year-old is slashing .348/.395/.527 with five long balls, 25 RBI and 30 runs scored in 199 plate appearances. Over his last five games, he is batting .348 with three RBI and four runs.
Aug 14, 2021
Goes deep Friday
Marte went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a victory versus San Diego on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Marte started in left field and occupied the second spot in the order in the contest. He crushed a 431-foot shot to left field off Blake Snell in the fifth inning for his first homer since June 2. Marte's .346 batting average this season is undoubtedly impressive, but Friday's long ball was only his fifth of the campaign. Since mashing 32 homers in 2019, he has hit only seven across 360 at-bats over his past two campaigns.
Aug 7, 2021
Gets breather Saturday
Marte isn't starting Saturday's game against San Diego, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte started in each of the last three games, and he went 3-for-12 with a double, an RBI and a walk. Josh VanMeter will start at second base while Pavin Smith takes over in center field.
Aug 7, 2021
Injuries prompt discussion
The Diamondbacks will focus on how best to deploy Marte during the offseason, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Arizona has enjoyed the flexibility Marte bring, moving him between second base and center field with occasional work at shortstop. The team is reconsidering that flexibility in light of three straight seasons of health and injury issues. In 2019, there was stress reaction in his back; in 2020, it was a left wrist injury; and in 2021, he's had two stints on the injured list with hamstring issues, one in each leg. Underneath it all, the Diamondbacks have wondered if moving him around the diamond -- and the unique actions needed to perform at multiple positions -- might have adverse effect on the player. Having a healthy Marte would make a difference to the lineup and improve his trade value should Arizona consider moving the 27-year-old at some point during the final three years of his contract.
Aug 3, 2021
Not starting Tuesday
Marte is not in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Marte started both of the previous two games after being reinstated from the injured list Saturday. Despite logging three hits and scoring two runs across his last nine at-bats, he'll return to the bench against Johnny Cueto on Tuesday.
Aug 2, 2021
Starts Sunday
Marte started in center field and went 1-for-4 in Sunday's 13-0 loss to the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Marte was activated off the injured list Saturday but did not appear in a game until Sunday's blowout loss to Los Angeles. He was the lone member of the starting lineup with a batting average higher than .259.
Aug 1, 2021
On bench after reinstatement
Marte, who was activated off the injured list Saturday, did not play in an 8-3 loss to the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
It's odd that Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo left Marte on the bench after he was activated, then didn't use him as a pinch hitter later in the game, instead opting for Josh Reddick. Presumably, when he does re-enter the starting lineup, Marte will be the center fielder.
Jul 31, 2021
Returns from injured list
Marte (hamstring) was activated off the injured list Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Marte missed just over a month with a strained left hamstring. He went hitless in three rehab games but is nonetheless considered ready to go. Andrew Young was optioned in a corresponding move.
Jul 28, 2021
Begins rehab assignment
Marte (hamstring) went 0-for-2 with a walk for the ACL D-backs on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Marte, who has been on the injured list June 27, initiated a rehab assignment Tuesday, playing five innings in center field and getting three plate appearances. He had been scheduled to begin the assignment Monday, but instead he got seven at-bats in a "B" game at the team's training complex. It's unclear how many at-bats the club wants Marte to get while on assignment.
Jul 25, 2021
Moves to Chase Field
Marte (hamstring) was moved from the team's training complex to Chase Field to take at-bats against live pitching, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Weather at the complex has put a hold on Marte's at-bats, so the Diamondbacks moved him to be with the team in Phoenix where he'll get at-bats. Marte will remain in town and perhaps get at-bats in the Arizona Complex League.
Jul 21, 2021
Near full recovery
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Marte (hamstring) underwent an MRI on Tuesday, which showed he is "near a full resolution."
ANALYSIS
To celebrate the promising news, Marte took three live at-bats later in the day. The next step for the injured outfielder is to ramp up his running activity. "He looks very powerful," Lovullo said. "I think he's very close to making some turns on the basepaths." Marte could potentially return by the end of July.
Jul 20, 2021
MRI coming
Marte (hamstring) had been scheduled for an MRI on Monday, but it has been pushed back to Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Apparently, the MRI machine was not working properly, so the procedure was pushed back a day. The Diamondbacks are anxious to see the state of his hamstring before determining next steps. Marte has hit in the batter's box, executed some forward movements, and taken grounders.
Jul 3, 2021
Takes swings in box
Marte (hamstring) took at-bats in a live batting practice session Friday but did not run out of the batter's box, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte, who was placed on the injured list earlier in the week, is trying to stay sharp while recovering from his second IL stay due to balky hamstrings.
Jun 28, 2021
Placed on injured list
Marte was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain Monday, retroactive to June 27.
ANALYSIS
Marte underwent imaging Monday after he aggravated his hamstring injury Saturday, and he's been diagnosed with a strain. It's not yet clear when the 27-year-old will be cleared to return to game action, but Tim Locastro and Pavin Smith could see increased time in center field in his absence.
Jun 27, 2021
Slated for additional imaging
Marte will undergo imaging on his hamstring Monday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte aggravated his hamstring injury Saturday following a two-game absence, and he was held out of the lineup Sunday. The 27-year-old didn't appear off the bench, and his tests Monday could help determine the extent of his injury.
Jun 27, 2021
Not starting Sunday
Marte (hamstring) is out of the lineup Sunday against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Marte returned from a two-game absence Saturday but exited the contest early after aggravating the hamstring injury. It's unclear if the 27-year-old will be available off the bench Sunday. Pavin Smith will shift to center field while Josh Reddick starts in right.
Jun 26, 2021
Exits Saturday
Marte exited Saturday's game against the Padres in the first inning after appearing to aggravate the hamstring issue that sidelined him for the previous two games, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Josh Reddick replaced him as a pinch runner.
ANALYSIS
Marte initially tweaked his hamstring during Tuesday's game against Milwaukee. He did not play Wednesday or Friday, but felt good enough to give it a go Saturday. The outfielder singled in his first-inning at-bat, so he likely aggravated his hamstring while running to first base. The Diamondbacks figure to provide additional updates later Saturday.
Jun 26, 2021
Back in starting lineup
Marte (hamstring) is back in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against San Diego.
ANALYSIS
Marte exited Tuesday's game against the Brewers with left hamstring tightness. The issue appears to have subsided, as he'll bat second and man center field Saturday night. Marte tallied six hits in his last nine at-bats prior to his Tuesday departure.
Jun 25, 2021
Available off bench Friday
Manager Torey Lovullo said that Marte (hamstring) ran the bases Friday and is available off the bench for Friday's game against the Padres, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte is absent from the starting nine for the second straight game after he exited Tuesday's game against the Brewers with left hamstring tightness. Given that he's available off the bench Friday, he figures to have a good chance of returning to the lineup Saturday.
Jun 25, 2021
Remains out of lineup
Marte (hamstring) isn't starting Friday's game against San Diego.
ANALYSIS
Marte exited Tuesday's game against the Brewers due to left hamstring tightness, and he'll be out of the lineup for a second straight game, even after Thursday's team off day. Josh VanMeter will start at second base while Pavin Smith shifts to center field.
Jun 23, 2021
Labeled day-to-day
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said after Tuesday's 5-0 loss to Milwaukee that Marte is day-to-day with a tight left hamstring, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte picked up the injury in the first inning, when he was running to second base after hitting a ground-rule double. He was immediately removed from the contest, but initial examinations of Marte's hamstring apparently didn't turn up anything overly concerning. Lovullo didn't suggest that Marte would be sent in for an MRI, so for now, the Diamondbacks would seem to have some optimism that the center fielder will require a trip to the injured list.
Jun 22, 2021
Dealing with hamstring injury
Marte was removed from Tuesday's game versus Milwaukee with left hamstring tightness, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte suffered the injury while rounding first base after hitting a double during the first inning. The 27-year-old missed a month earlier this season due to a strained right hamstring, and he's now managing an injury to the same muscle on his other leg.
Jun 22, 2021
Exits with injury
Marte was removed from Tuesday's game versus the Brewers with an apparent left leg injury, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old hit a double during the first inning but appeared to suffer a left leg injury while rounding first base and promptly left the contest. Marte spent over a month on the injured list with a right hamstring strain, so Tuesday's injury appears to be unrelated.
Jun 22, 2021
Moves to leadoff
Marte batted leadoff and went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored in Monday's 5-1 win over Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo deployed Marte atop the order for the first time since May 25, and the move paid off for the Diamondbacks, who snapped a 17-game losing streak. It was the fourth time hitting leadoff this season for Marte, who is typically slotted at the two hole. He's recorded hits in six straight games, going 11-for-25 with four doubles and seven RBIs during the streak.
Jun 20, 2021
Pair of doubles
Marte went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs, two RBI and a walk in Sunday's 9-8 loss to the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Marte doubled and scored in both the fourth and six innings and came up twice in the eighth, walking and recording a two-RBI single. This was his fifth straight game with a hit and although he only has four home runs, Marte's batting a robust .357 with a .404 on base.
Jun 17, 2021
Not in Thursday's lineup
Marte is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Marte gets a rest despite the fact that he's recorded three multi-hit games in his last four contests. Pavin Smith will be the center fielder in his absence.
Jun 17, 2021
Strong performance Wednesday
Marte went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's loss against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Marte has recorded two-hit performances in three of his last four contests, and he ended an eight-game drought without extra-base hits after hitting a two-run double in the top of the sixth. The seven-year veteran is having another strong year at the plate and is hitting .347 with a .391 on-base percentage -- both figures would represent career-best marks for him if he's able to maintain it the rest of the way.
Jun 14, 2021
Reaches base three times in loss
Marte went 2-for-3 with a walk in Sunday's 10-3 loss to the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Marte got on base three times, but to no avail, as nothing came out of the chances. He's slashing .321/.372/.449 with two home runs, nine RBI, 11 runs scored and a 7:14 BB:K in 22 games since returning from the injured list in mid-May. He's been an exception in what has otherwise been a disastrous season for the Diamondbacks as he's kept up his solid play despite the team only having won twice since he was reinstated.
Jun 12, 2021
Heads to bench
Marte is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Marte sits after grabbing just one hit in his last three games, a poor stretch which followed an excellent one in which he posted a 1.136 OPS over 10 games. Pavin Smith will be the center fielder in his absence.
Jun 7, 2021
Swings hot bat, slipping defense
Marte went 2-for-4 in Sunday's 2-0 loss to Milwaukee.
ANALYSIS
The Diamondbacks may be in a free fall, but Marte's offense isn't. The 27-year-old infielder/outfielder extended a hit streak to seven games, during which he's 15-for-30 with five extra-base hits, six RBI and six runs. The offense has been good, but Marte's defense in center field has slipped, per Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. "It's not necessarily closing in on the ball or moving full speed, it's the first moves to the baseball, the angles to the baseball," Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. "Those are things we feel he could do a little better job with." Marte is near the bottom of the league among center fielders in defensive runs saved and ultimate zone rating. He already qualifies at second base this season, but he's yet to earn a start at the keystone in 2021. If the declining defense moves him to second base going forward, then fantasy managers can eke out another year of middle infield flexibility from Marte next season.
Jun 4, 2021
Day off Friday
Marte will sit Friday against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Marte will sit for the fourth time in 16 games since his return from a hamstring injury in mid-May. He struggled initially upon his return but has been on fire over his last five games, going 11-for-21 with a pair of homers, two doubles and just a single strikeout. Pavin Smith will handle center field in his absence.
Jun 2, 2021
Blasts homer in loss
Marte went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 7-6 loss to the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Marte got Arizona on the board with his first-inning homer. The 27-year-old has hit safely in eight of the last nine games, going 12-for-35 (.343) with two homers, seven RBI and seven runs scored in that span. That's in line with his season numbers -- he's slashing .347/.390/.587 across 82 plate appearances overall.
May 31, 2021
Swats first HR since return
Marte went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and a second run scored in Sunday's 9-2 win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Marte is dialing in his swing after missing six weeks with a hamstring injury. Sunday's long ball was his first since returning to the active roster May 19, and the outfielder is 7-for-23 (.304) with five RBI and five runs over the last six games.
May 28, 2021
Takes seat Friday
Marte isn't starting Friday's game against the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Marte will get a breather after he went 4-for-13 with two runs, an RBI and a walk across the last three games. Tim Locastro will start in center field and bat eighth.
May 22, 2021
Not starting Saturday
Marte is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
It appears to be a regular day of rest for Marte, who has gone 2-for-10 since coming off the injured list. The 27-year-old was an offensive force, albeit in small sample size, before suffering the hamstring injury and will be one of his team's most valuable contributors once he gets back in the swing of things.
May 22, 2021
Bats leadoff Friday
Marte batted leadoff and went 1-for-5 in Friday's 7-1 loss to the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
This was Marte's second start since coming off the injured list and first as the leadoff batter. He was the primary leadoff hitter before the injury but slotted in at the two-hole Thursday before returning to his customary spot Friday.
May 21, 2021
Returns to action
Marte started in center field, batted second and went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Thursday's 3-2 loss to the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Marte was activated off the injured list Wednesday and started for the first time since injuring his hamstring April 7. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo is expected to slow-walk Marte's return initially, so expect rest days in the first week or so before he resumes an everyday role in center field.
May 19, 2021
Not starting Wednesday
Marte (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day injured list but isn't starting Wednesday against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old has been sidelined since April 7 with a strained hamstring, and he won't immediately rejoin the lineup upon his activation from the injured list. Marte should be back in the starting nine within a day or two, while Tim Locastro receives the start Wednesday in center field.
May 19, 2021
Back from injured list Wednesday
Marte (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old made rehab appearances at the alternate site and Triple-A Reno over the past week, and he'll return from a nearly six-week absence Wednesday. Marte was off to a hot start this season and was 12-for-26 with two homers, four doubles, five RBI and five runs in six games before going down with the hamstring strain.
May 19, 2021
Begins rehab stint
Marte (hamstring) went 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI in a rehab appearance for Triple-A Reno on Tuesday, Jose M. Romero of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Diamondbacks assistant general manager Amiel Sawdaye said Marte felt good following the first game of his rehab stint, which suggests he won't need too many games before he's ready to rejoin the major-league club.
May 16, 2021
Moves rehab to Triple-A
Marte (hamstring) will join Triple-A Reno for a rehab assignment Monday, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old has been playing in rehab games at the alternate training site but will progress to minor-league contests this week. Marte has been sidelined since early April with a hamstring strain, but he appears to be on the cusp of returning from the injured list.
May 16, 2021
Plays six innings Saturday
Marte (hamstring) played six innings in a game against members of the Rockies at the Diamondbacks' alternate training site Saturday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Torey Lovullo attended the game and was "very encouraged" by Marte's play. He will be evaluated Sunday and is likely to be headed out on a rehab assignment.
May 13, 2021
Sim game on tap
Marte (hamstring) will play center field in a four-inning simulated game Friday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte had hoped that he'd be able to begin a rehab assignment Thursday or Friday, but he'll instead see game action in a sim game. If his appearance in the simulated game goes well, the 27-year-old could begin a rehab assignment in the near future.
May 11, 2021
Nearing rehab assignment
Marte (hamstring) hopes to begin a rehab assignment Thursday or Friday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old has been on the shelf for over a month with the hamstring strain, so it's not much of a surprise he'll head to the minors to get back up to game speed before being activated. Marte could return sometime next week if he does begin the rehab stint Thursday or Friday.
May 10, 2021
Evaluation at Chase Field
Marte (hamstring) will rejoin the Diamondbacks for an assessment Monday or Tuesday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
The purpose of the evaluation is to determine how close Marte is to beginning a potential minor league rehabilitation assignment. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo is "strongly in favor" of Marte playing games in the minors prior to returning from the injured list. Marte has been out since April 7.
May 8, 2021
Close to rehab assignment
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Marte (hamstring) is "very close" to beginning a rehab assignment, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte is currently at the alternate training facility at Salt River Fields and has performed running drills. At this point, he's mostly running straight ahead with some "some arcs and some curves and some change of direction."
May 5, 2021
Begins work at alternate site
Marte (hamstring) will begin taking at-bats during games at Arizona's alternate site, NIck Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
The plan is to have Marte lightly jog out of the batter's box before ramping up his intensity. Manager Torey Lovullo did not have an update on where Marte was in his running progression.
Apr 27, 2021
Hamstring healing
Marte (hamstring) had a follow-up MRI that "showed healing," Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
As has been the case since he first got injured, there hasn't been much in the way of detailed reports regarding the severity of Marte's hamstring injury or a timetable for the return, but at least things seem to be moving in the right direction. He took live batting practice last week.
Apr 21, 2021
Slated for live BP
Marte (hamstring) will participate in a live batting practice session Wednesday, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte resumed some baseball activity over the weekend, and he'll take another step in his recovery process Wednesday. It's not yet clear when the 27-year-old will be cleared to return to game action, but a better idea of his return timetable could come into focus after his live batting practice.
Apr 17, 2021
Begins slow ramp up
Marte (hamstring) did light running, played catch and hit off a tee Friday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
This was the first return to anything resembling baseball activity for Marte, who has been sidelined by a sore right hamstring since April 7. He's eligible to return Sunday, but it appears his absence will extend into next week.
Apr 16, 2021
No baseball activity yet
Marte (hamstring) continues to get treatment and has not yet begun baseball activities, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte is on his feet and doing light movement. He's eligible to come off the injured list April 18, but it's unlikely Marte will return by then. Tim Locastro will continue to be the primary fill-in at center field.
Apr 8, 2021
Placed on injured list
Marte was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Marte pulled up while running to first base in Wednesday's loss to the Rockies, and he'll miss additional time as a result. He'll undergo an MRI on Friday to determine the extent of the injury, but Tim Locastro should serve as the primary center fielder while Marte is sidelined. Andrew Young was recalled from the taxi squad in a corresponding move to serve as outfield depth.
Apr 8, 2021
Slated to undergo MRI
Marte (hamstring) will undergo an MRI on Friday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte isn't starting Thursday's series finale against the Rockies after he left Wednesday's loss with a right hamstring injury. His MRI could provide a better idea of the severity of the issue, and a timetable for hie return could come into focus once the results of the tests are known.
Apr 8, 2021
Sitting out Thursday
Marte (hamstring) isn't starting Thursday's game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Marte left Wednesday's loss to Colorado with an apparent right hamstring injury and won't be in the lineup for the series finale as a result. The severity of Marte's injury isn't yet known, but Tim Locastro will take over in center field and lead off Thursday.
Apr 7, 2021
Suffers apparent hamstring injury
Marte exited Wednesday's game at Colorado with an apparent right hamstring injury, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old pulled up and appeared to grab at his right hamstring during the sixth inning, and he was subsequently helped off the field by training staff. Marte entered Wednesday's contest 12-for-23 with two homers and four doubles through five games, and it would be an enormous loss for the Diamondbacks should he be forced to miss time.
Apr 7, 2021
Collects three more hits
Marte went 3-for-7 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBI in Tuesday's 13-inning win over Colorado.
ANALYSIS
Marte provided the winning margin in the contest with a 13th-inning double that plated two runs. It was the third hit of the game and 12th overall this season for the 27-year-old, who has notched at least one base knock in each of his five games to start the campaign. He is slashing .522/.560/.957 overall with a pair of home runs and five RBI.
Apr 3, 2021
Slugs second homer
Marte went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and a double in a loss to the Padres on Friday.
ANALYSIS

Apr 1, 2021
Collects four hits Thursday
Marte went 4-for-5 with a double, a solo home run and a second run scored in Thursday's 8-7 loss to San Diego.
ANALYSIS
Marte, who started in center field and batted second, mashed during spring training and kept it going Opening Day. He posted a 1.181 OPS with 10 of his 14 spring hits going for extra bases. Center field may be his primary home in 2021 after playing mostly at second base in 2020.
Mar 29, 2021
Returns to lineup
Marte (illness) is back in the lineup Monday against the Cubs, leading off and playing center field, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS

Mar 28, 2021
Scratched with non-COVID illness
Marte was scratched from Sunday's Cactus League lineup with a non-COVID illness, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old was slated to start in center field and bat leadoff, but he'll instead receive the day off. The specifics of the situation remain unclear, but it's unlikely to affect Marte's availability for Opening Day.
Mar 25, 2021
Swats leadoff homer
Marte went 1-for-1 with two walks and a solo home run in Wednesday's spring game against Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Marte went deep for the third time this spring, leading off the bottom half of the first inning, the sixth time over 13 games he's batted leadoff. He's also made six starts as the second batter in the order. Marte appears poised to return to his 2019 form; he's 12-for-34 with five doubles, three home runs, six RBI, five walks and 11 runs scored. Additionally, per David Adler of MLB.com, Marte's tied for the spring lead with five balls leaving his bat at 110 MPH or higher.

Returns to action Friday
Marte (ankle) is starting in center field and batting leadoff in Friday's spring game against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old exited Tuesday's matchup with the A's due to soreness in his left ankle, but he's ready to retake the field Friday. Marte seems likely to open the season as the starter in center field but could also see time at the keystone.
Mar 16, 2021
Nursing sore ankle
Marte was pulled from Tuesday's spring game against the Athletics due to left ankle soreness, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old apparently rolled his ankle while running the bases Tuesday, though manager Torey Lovullo indicated it's not a serious concern. Marte should be considered day-to-day, but at this point it doesn't appear his status for Opening Day should be affected by the injury.
Mar 16, 2021
Exits with possible injury
Marte was replaced in center field by Daulton Varsho in Tuesday's game against A's after possibly injuring himself running the bases in the prior inning, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte returned to the lineup Tuesday after getting hit on the foot by a pitch in Monday's game, so he may have aggravated that bruise.
Mar 16, 2021
Returns to lineup
Marte (foot) is back in the lineup Tuesday against Oakland, batting second and playing center field.
ANALYSIS
Marte got hit in the foot by a pitch Monday against the Mariners, but he checked out fine after the game. He won't even need a single day off despite the fact that it's still spring training, so there's seemingly little reason to worry about any lingering effects.
Mar 15, 2021
Avoids significant injury
According to manager Torey Luvullo, Marte is "fine" after being struck by a pitch on his right foot during Monday's spring game against Seattle, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte was lifted from the exhibition after getting hit by the pitch, but it appears this move was only precautionary. The Diamondbacks will likely proceed with caution over the next few days with their starting center fielder, however.
Mar 15, 2021
Exits after pitch hits foot
Marte left Monday's game against the Mariners after a pitch hit his foot, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte walked slowly to first base with a team trainer before exiting the game. Whether or not he suffered a significant injury is not yet clear. If he's forced to miss time at the start of the regular season, Daulton Varsho or Tim Locastro could see starts in center field.
Mar 14, 2021
Homers as starting CF
Marte started in center field and went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's spring game against San Diego.
ANALYSIS
Marte led off the game with his first Cactus League homer and has hit safely in six of seven games played. The Diamondbacks have not confirmed which position will be Marte's primary spot this season, but Saturday's outing was his fourth start in center field compared to one at second base and two as designated hitter.
Mar 1, 2021
Starts at 2B Sunday
Marte started at second base, batted leadoff and went 1-for-2 with a run scored in Sunday's spring game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Marte's position has been the subject of much discussion thus far in camp. He's expected to see time at both second base and center field. It's unclear if he'll bat leadoff this season, but he will occupy a spot near the top of the order. Last season, he led off 16 games and batted second 29 times.
Feb 28, 2021
Takes reps at SS
Marte has been fielding grounders at shortstop early in camp, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Nick Ahmed is entrenched at shortstop, but manager Torey Lovullo wants to determine who will backup at shortstop when Ahmed is off. Marte has appeared in 270 games at shortstop in the majors but is expected to play more at second base or center field this season. Other backup candidates for Ahmed include Josh Rojas and Andy Young.
Feb 19, 2021
Subject of discussions
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo and general manager Mike Hazen discussed lineup permutations depending on what position Marte plays, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Diamondbacks envision the flexibility Marte affords them, bouncing between center field and second base, but the decision-makers want to get the player's input first. "The luxury it affords us is that it allows us to be even more creative with how we feel we're putting the best eight hitters on the field on a given day," Hazen said. "The downside to that is what impact does that have on Ketel, because he's always the guy who has to make the adjustment." If outfielder Tim Locastro or catcher/outfielder Dalton Varsho have good springs, Marte could play second base; if infielders competing for a spot -- Josh Rojas, Josh VanMeter, Asdrubal Cabrera, Wyatt Mathisen or Andy Young -- impress this spring, then Marte could make center field his primary spot. But it all starts with Marte buying into such an arrangement.
Feb 13, 2021
Shifting back to OF?
Marte could see most of his time in center field in 2021 after the Diamondbacks signed Asdrubal Cabrera, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Diamondbacks appear to view the switch-hitting Cabrera as a third baseman, who could force Eduardo Escobar to second base on days when he starts. The domino effect of that is Marte moving off second to center field, where he primarily played in 2019. Marte played 41 of 45 games in 2020 at second base.

Drives in three during win
Marte went 2-for-3 with a double, two-run single and sacrifice fly in Sunday's 11-3 win over the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Marte extended Arizona's lead to 7-0 in the sixth and picked up two more RBI with a single an inning later. Though he logged a solid .287 batting average, Marte saw his power production drop off substantially this season. After swatting 32 homers and driving in 92 runs in 2019, Marte hit just two long balls while tallying 17 RBI across 181 at-bats during the shortened campaign.

Not starting nightcap
Marte isn't in the lineup for Game 2 of Friday's doubleheader against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Marte will retreat to the bench after going 1-for-3 with one walk in the first game of the twin bill. Josh VanMeter will take over at second base.
Sep 23, 2020
In lineup Wednesday
Marte will be in the starting lineup Wednesday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte was activated Tuesday after a stay on the injured list due to wrist inflammation and played second base. After Wednesday's game, the team will evaluate how he's feeling physically and whether he will play any innings in center field.
Sep 23, 2020
Goes 1-for-4 in return
Marte (wrist) went 1-for-4 in Tuesday's 7-0 win over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Marte hit a single in the fifth inning but couldn't come around to score. He played seven innings on defense before Josh VanMeter replaced him at second base in the blowout win. Marte has two homers, 14 RBI, 17 runs scored and a stolen base in 41 contests.
Sep 22, 2020
Batting second in return
Marte (wrist) was activated from the 10-day injured list and is starting at second base and batting second Tuesday against the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
He ends up missing two weeks with the wrist injury. Marte is batting .290/.324/.407 with two home runs and one stolen base in 40 games this season. He should play regularly the rest of the way.
Sep 22, 2020
Expected back this week
Marte (wrist) is on target to return from the injured list during Arizona's final homestand, Nick PIecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte took batting practice this past weekend at the alternate training sit and was scheduled to play in a simulated game Monday. Pending the outcome of Monday's sim game, Marte could return to Arizona's lineup at some point in the final six games.
Sep 18, 2020
Nearly ready for batting practice
Marte (wriste) will take batting practice Saturday and has a shot to return during the final week of the season, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte's required 10 days on the injured list with left wrist inflammation elapsed Friday, though it looks like he still needs a few more days to heal. When exactly the Diamondbacks expect to activate him remains unclear.
Sep 16, 2020
Hits off tee
Marte (wrist) hit off a tee for the first time since being placed on the injured list, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo is optimistic Marte will return before the end of the season, although the Diamondbacks have just 11 games left. The organization must decide whether or not it's worth having Marte return to play regularly instead of evaluating its prospects during a season going nowhere.
Sep 9, 2020
Placed on 10-day IL
Marte was placed on the 10-day injured list with left wrist inflammation Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear exactly how Marte sustained the injury, but he'll be sidelined at least 10 days as a result. While the severity of the injury isn't known, Tim Locastro and Daulton Varsho could see an uptick in playing time in center field. Marte was slashing .290/.324/.407 with two home runs and 14 RBI this season.
Sep 6, 2020
Gets breather
Marte is not in Sunday's lineup against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Marte will get a day off for the second time in the past four games. Tim Locastro will take a turn in the starting lineup, hitting first while manning center field.
Sep 5, 2020
Busts out Friday
Marte went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBI in Friday's 6-5 win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
The Diamondbacks offense has struggled for much of the season, and Marte's bat has been particularly quiet. Friday's home run was his first in 30 games, part of his most explosive game of the season. It was one of the few times in 2020 that Marte resembled the player that had a .981 OPS and 32 home runs in 2019. The Diamondbacks are hoping this is a sign of things to come.
Sep 2, 2020
Will play center field
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Marte and rookie Daulton Varsho will share center field after the team traded Starling Marte, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Varsho got the start Tuesday, but Lovullo said Marte will move from second base to the outfield as well. He spent most of his breakout 2019 campaign as a center fielder. Tim Locastro will also be in the center field mix.
Aug 29, 2020
Scores two runs against Giants
Marte went 2-for-3 a double and two runs scored in Friday's win over San Francisco.
ANALYSIS
Marte continues to produce at a steady rate and has been one of the most consistent hitters in the Diamondbacks lineup. The star second baseman is hitting .309 with eight doubles, eight RBI and 11 runs scored in 97 at-bats this month.
Aug 21, 2020
Another multi-hit performance
Marte went 2-for-4 with a double in Thursday's loss against Oakland.
ANALYSIS
Marte notched his seventh double of the season off Sean Manaea, and he also pushed his hitting streak to five games -- he has delivered multi-hit outings in four of those contests. Marte has been one of the most productive hitters in the Diamondbacks lineup in 2020, slashing .343/.361/.441 with a .802 OPS in 108 plate appearances across 25 games.
Aug 20, 2020
Raises average to .337
Marte returned to the lineup and went 2-for-4 in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to Oakland.
ANALYSIS
Marte rapped out multiple hits for the 11th time in 24 games and raised his average to .337. That's higher than he posted during his breakout 2019 season, but Marte's power is down -- just one home run and a .429 slugging percentage. Pitchers are attacking him differently, per Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, who notes Marte is seeing fewer fastballs over the plate and more on the edge. This has contributed to a reduction in barrels. Last year, when Marte slugged .592 and launched 32 home runs, he barreled up 9.3 percent of his batted balls. That has fallen to 3.6 percent in 2020.
Aug 18, 2020
Sits for first time
Marte will hit the bench for the first time this season Tuesday against Oakland, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte has made excellent contact in recent games, hitting .387 over his last seven contests. Eduardo Escobar will slide to second base Tuesday, with Jake Lamb starting at third.
Aug 17, 2020
Steals base in win
Marte went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in Sunday's 5-4 win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
The stolen base was the first in 2020 for Marte, who stole 10 in 144 games during his breakout 2019 season. The hot-hitting second baseman is 11-for-26 with six RBI over the last six games. Marte is a fixture atop the order, batting either leadoff or second in every game.
Aug 16, 2020
Extends RBI streak to five games
Marte went 2-for-5 with an RBI in Saturday's win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Marte has driven in a run in each of his last five games, a span in which he's hit for .409 with a .940 OPS. The NL MVP candidate in 2019 has been seeing the ball well all year long, and he is currently hitting .321 with a .717 OPS, seven RBI and eight runs scored in 53 August at-bats.
Aug 11, 2020
Knocks four hits
Marte went 4-for-6 with a double, one RBI and three runs scored in a 12-8 win over Colorado on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Marte scored three runs in the first four innings and later drove in an insurance run in the ninth. The 26-year-old switch-hitter has just four RBI this season but owns a .333/.347/.449 slash line.
Aug 6, 2020
Scores twice Wednesday
Marte went 3-for-5 with an RBI double and two runs scored in Wednesday's 14-7 win over the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Marte's biggest contributions came in the fourth inning. In his first at-bat of the inning, he hit a leadoff single and scored on a Kole Calhoun inside-the-park homer. Marte then doubled home Stephen Vogt before scoring on a Calhoun single for the eighth of nine Arizona runs in the rally. The 26-year-old Marte has a homer, three RBI, six runs scored and a .319 batting average in 12 games this season.
Aug 1, 2020
Starts at shortstop
Marte started at shortstop and went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in Friday's 5-3 win over the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Marte started at second base the first seven games before moving to shortstop Friday. The regular starter at short, the slumping Nick Ahmed, was given an off day. Marte's one of the few Diamondback hitters making consistent contact to start the season. He's hit in seven of the first eight games, including multiple hits in four of them, with four extra-base hits and a slash of .344/.371/.531.
Jul 31, 2020
Launches first homer
Marte went 2-for-4 with a solo home run during Thursday's loss to the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Marte found his stride early with a leadoff single in the first inning, then got the Diamondbacks on the board by swatting an opposite field home run off Ross Stripling in the third. It was the first long ball of the season for the 26-year-old, who enjoyed a breakout 2019 campaign that included 32 homers and a .329 average across 144 games.
Jul 26, 2020
On base three times
Marte went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Marte scored the tying run in the eighth inning after getting aboard with a walk. In the ninth, his sacrifice fly put the Diamondbacks ahead. Marte has gone 4-for-11 with a pair of doubles in the first three games of 2020. Serving as the leadoff hitter will likely suppress his RBI count, but he gets on base frequently enough (.389 OBP in 2019, .342 career) to make up for that in runs scored.
Jul 26, 2020
Batting leadoff
Marte batted leadoff and went 1-for-4 with a double in Saturday's 5-1 loss to the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Marte was primarily the second hitter in the order in 2019, when he had a breakout season, but he's been used as the leadoff hitter in both games to start the season. He's hit safely in each of the first two games.
Jul 14, 2020
Goes yard twice
Marte belted a pair of home runs during Monday's intrasquad game, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte tagged Merrill Kelly in the first inning, then got to him again later. "I'm not surprised by what he's doing," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. "He's locked in right now. It's what every hitter looks to get to." He hit well in spring training and has continued to rake in camp. Marte terrorized pitchers in 2019, smacking 32 home runs with a .263 ISO.
Jul 7, 2020
Just like spring training
Marte went 2-for-2 with a double and a home run during an intra-squad game Monday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte opened summer camp much like spring training when he homered in his first at-bat of the Cactus League. He could move around defensively but is expected to make second base his primary home.
Jun 25, 2020
An option at DH
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo talked about using the designated hitter position as a way to keep Marte's bat in the lineup while giving him a break in the field, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte had a breakout season in 2019 before tiring down the stretch and suffering a stress reaction in his back. The theory at the time was that he played too much, particularly in center field, which was a new position to him. "It will give me a chance to get guys off their feet," Lovullo said of the DH. "Knowing the workload is going to be pretty heavy and we're going to be going full throttle, getting a guy off his feet for a day game in Colorado is probably something we would be addressing." The manager had every intention of giving Marte more downtime in 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic put a halt to MLB. The desire to rest him is still there during the 60-game sprint of a regular season. Only now, the rest will be in the form of having Marte serve as the DH. Others being considered for the DH rotation are Jake Lamb, Christian Walker, Eduardo Escobar and Kevin Cron.
Mar 20, 2020
Has healthy spring
Marte showed no effect from last season's back injury during a productive spring. He batted .375 (9-for-24) with four extra-base hits, three runs scored and four RBI over nine Cactus League games.
ANALYSIS
Marte's breakout 2019 season ended prematurely in September when a stress reaction in his back ended his campaign. It was an injury the Diamondbacks feel was brought on by him playing center field, a more active position than second base, his primary diamond home until last season. He showed no residual effects of the injury during the spring when he homered in his first spring at-bat and didn't stop hitting. Marte will move back to the less stressful second base in 2020. The switch-hitter bounced between leadoff and second in the order in the Cactus League, switching up with the newly acquired Starling Marte.
Feb 24, 2020
Homers in first spring AB
Marte went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 7-3 spring win over Oakland.
ANALYSIS
Marte wasted little time, jumping on a mistake from Athletics right-hander Chris Bassitt during his first spring at-bat. Marte, who had a breakout campaign in 2019, started at second base in Arizona's first Cactus League game. That's likely the position he'll occupy most frequently in 2020 after the Diamondbacks acquired Starling Marte to man center field, the spot at which Ketel Marte started the most games last season.
Jan 29, 2020
Impact of other Marte
The Diamondbacks could have Ketel Marte (back) primarily play second base after the team acquired center fielder Sterling Marte from the Pirates, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ketel Marte, who shuttled between second base and center field in 2019, appeared in a career-high 92 games in the outfield before sustaining a back injury late in the season. The Diamondbacks believe the extra activity involved in being a center fielder contributed to the injury, so the acquisition of Sterling Marte gives manager Torey Lovullo the flexibility to have Ketel Marte play a less stressful position.
Sep 20, 2019
Not in Friday's lineup
Marte (back) is not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Marte was held out of Wednesday's game after leaving Tuesday's contest with a stiff back, and he will miss another game Friday despite the Diamondbacks coming off a team off day. It's not yet clear how long Marte will be sidelined, but with Arizona's playoff hopes fading, there is little incentive for the club to risk Marte's long-term health.
Sep 18, 2019
MRI scheduled
Marte (back) will undergo an MRI on Wednesday morning and will not play in that day's series finale against the Marlins, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte was pulled from Tuesday's game with what was described as back stiffness. The Diamondbacks are technically still in the hunt for a postseason berth, but it's a long shot at this point. As such, they may not want to push a valuable asset like Marte, who's had a breakout campaign.
Aug 30, 2019
Removed from game late
Marte, who had been dealing with a hamstring injury, was replaced in center field to start the seventh inning of Thursday's win over the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
There's nothing to indicate Marte was removed due to an aggravation of the hamstring, so his removal may be attributed to an abundance of caution. The Diamondbacks were leading at the time, 10-4, and it's logical that manager Torey Lovullo did not want to push Marte.
