ANALYSIS
Gurriel has been out of action since Sunday, when he left a game against Atlanta with a tight right groin. He won't be asked to take the field just yet but is evidently healthy enough to hit. That's good news for the Diamondbacks, as Gurriel owns a .310/.359/.550 slash line this season, homering nine times in 53 games.
Jun 9, 2023
Expected back soon
Gurriel (groin) is feeling better and expected to return to the lineup soon, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel has not been able to play since leaving Sunday's game against Atlanta with tightness in his right groin. There's no guarantee that the outfielder will be able to return Saturday or even this weekend, but it does appear he's not dealing with a serious injury, and it doesn't seem likely he'll be placed on the injured list as long as there's no setback.

ANALYSIS

Jun 6, 2023
Out with groin tightness
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Tuesday that Gurriel has been battling right groin tightness, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
That explains why Gurriel missed Sunday's series finale versus Atlanta and is absent again from the starting lineup for Tuesday's series opener against the Nationals. He was checked out by team doctors Monday in Phoenix and the groin issue is considered minor. The 29-year-old could even be available off the bench Tuesday night in D.C.

Gurriel started the previous nine games and figures to be back in the lineup Tuesday in Washington.

May 22, 2023
Collects four hits
Gurriel went 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBI in Monday's win over the Phillies.
ANALYSIS

He's been terrific in May, going 25-for-63 (.397) with seven homers and a 9:9 BB:K while hitting safely in 15 of 17 games. May 8, 2023
Not in lineup against lefty
Gurriel is not in the Diamondbacks' lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
It's the first time this season that Gurriel has been on the bench when the opposition is starting a left-hander. Perhaps not coincidentally, Gurriel was caught being too casual in the outfield Sunday versus the Nationals when he was slow to get the ball in and the runner advanced an extra base. Dominic Fletcher is in left field and Emmanuel Rivera is the designated hitter Monday.
May 7, 2023
Homers twice in loss
Gurriel went 2-for-3 with two home runs, two walks, four RBI and four runs scored in Sunday's 9-8 loss to the Nationals.

Coming off a night in which he recorded his first two extra-base knocks of the season (a double and a triple) while plating three runs in Saturday's 12-8 win, Gurriel will get his first day off. Pavin Smith will replace Gurriel in the lineup, serving as Arizona's designated hitter and No. 3 batter.
Apr 9, 2023
Reaches base four times
Gurriel went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, three RBI, a run scored and was hit by a pitch in Saturday's 12-8 win over the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel has started every game as the primary designated hitter or a fill-in outfielder against left-handed starters. He snapped a three-game hitless stretch Saturday, and the extra-base were the first of the season for Gurriel, who is 8-for-35 (.229) with a .577 OPS through nine appearances.
Apr 1, 2023
Moves to DH
Gurriel served as the designated hitter and went 1-for-4 in Friday's 2-1 win over the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel has played both games thus far, as the left fielder Thursday against a lefty and the DH on Friday against a righty. Early signs indicate manger Torey Lovullo may hold back on center fielder Alex Thomas against lefties, which means Gurriel could play a near-everyday role.
Mar 31, 2023
Part of Opening Day lineup
Gurriel started in left field and went 1-for-4 in Thursday's 8-2 loss to the Dodgers on Opening Day.
ANALYSIS
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo deployed right-handed hitters Gurriel and Kyle Lewis (as DH) against Dodgers lefty Julio Urias, which meant one of the Diamondbacks' left-handed hitting outfielders would be on the bench. It was Alek Thomas. The speculation was that Arizona's all-lefty outfield would remain intact as the primary starters whether against lefties or righties, but that may not be the case. Right-hander Dustin May takes the hill Friday, so Lovullo will likely adjust to include Thomas in the outfield.
Mar 29, 2023
Plays first base Tuesday
Gurriel played five innings at first base during Tuesday's spring game against Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel enters the regular season as part of the rotation at designated hitter and the primary backup at first base. He was given some reps in practice and played some minor league games at first before Tuesday's work. His right-handed bat could also come in handy in an outfield that features three lefty-hitting starters.
Mar 26, 2023
Starting at first Sunday
Gurriel will start at first base in a minor-league Sunday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS

Will play first base
Gurriel is expected to get playing at time at first base in the final days of spring training, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel has played first base before but not much. Just 16 career games during his time with the Blue Jays. Getting him work at first base is an indicator that Kyle Lewis will win the final bench spot over Pavin Smith, who is the only true first baseman behind Christian Walker.
Feb 25, 2023
Starting in spring opener
Gurriel (wrist) will bat third and play left field in Saturday's split-squad game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel underwent wrist surgery in October after dealing with wrist troubles throughout last season. Reports at the time of the procedure indicated he'd be ready for the start of spring, and they've proved accurate. Where exactly he fits into the Diamondbacks' outfield is unclear, but he should feature frequently.

Gurriel (hamstring) was not selected for the Blue Jays' 26-man wild-card roster, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel was unable to prove his health in time to make the wild-card roster as he remains on the 10-day injured list to open the postseason. In his place, Toronto opted to carry Gabriel Moreno into the series as a third catcher. If the Blue Jays advance to the next round of the playoffs, Gurriel will once again be eligible to be activated from the IL.

ANALYSIS

The 29-year-old has logged a .238/.299/.351 slash line with two home runs, 18 RBI, 14 runs scored and a pair of stolen bases through 167 plate appearances. ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old snapped an 0-for-13 mini-slump with his two-bagger in the eighth inning, while the RBI ended a 13-game drought. Gurriel's swoon has dragged his slash line down to .243/.295/.369, and through 31 games he has a disappointing two homers, 11 RBI and 13 runs, with his two steals being the only category in which he's ahead of his usual pace.

Dealing with tight hamstring
Gurriel's absence from the lineup Tuesday against the Red Sox is due to hamstring tightness, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel may have been due for an off day anyway, as he'd started the Blue Jays' first 17 games of the year. The team doesn't seem to be overly concerned with his injury, as he reportedly could be available to pinch hit Tuesday, but it was enough for him to be replaced by a pinch hitter of his own Monday and will cost him at least one start.
Apr 26, 2022
Sitting Tuesday
Gurriel will be on the bench for Tuesday's game against Boston.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel started each of Toronto's first 17 games of the season, hitting .297/.329/.469 with two homers and a steal. He's homered in back-to-back games but will nonetheless get a rest Tuesday, with Raimel Tapia starting in left field.

Apr 24, 2022
Knocks first home run
Gurriel went 2-for-5 with a home run, a double and two RBI in Sunday's 8-7 loss to Houston.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel launched his first homer of the year off of Luis Garcia in the fifth inning. He later doubled in another run during the 10th. The 28-year-old has five multi-hit games over his last nine appearances, raising his season slash line to .283/.318/.400.

Apr 16, 2022
On base three times Friday
Gurriel went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, a run scored and an RBI in Friday's 4-1 win over the A's.
ANALYSIS
It's the first multi-hit performance of the season for Gurriel, who has yet to build up much momentum at the plate. The 28-year-old is slashing .241/.313/.310 through eight games with four RBI and three runs scored, but he's still looking for his first homer of 2022. Gurriel hit cleanup Friday behind Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero with Teoscar Hernandez (oblique) out of action, however, and that spot in the batting order could give him better pitches to hit and more RBI opportunities over the next couple weeks if he hangs onto it.
Apr 4, 2022
Looking to build on 2021 finish
Gurriel credits his late-season surge last year with a small mechanical adjustment at the plate, one he worked hard to refine this offseason, Laura Armstrong of The Toronto Star reports.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old tied the Blue Jays franchise record with 30 RBI in September despite sitting out a few games late in the month after Randal Grichuk stepped on his hand, and the fact Gurriel wasn't 100 percent when he returned played heavily into the team falling one game short of a playoff spot. He's been on fire this spring, slashing .478/.571/.696 with a 4:3 BB:K through 28 plate appearances, and Gurriel could be ready to take his production to another level in 2022.
Oct 2, 2021
Returns to lineup

ANALYSIS
Gurriel has battled a hand issue throughout the past week. While he returned to start a pair of games Tuesday and Wednesday as the designated hitter, he went 0-for-4 in both and now finds himself stuck on the bench for the second straight contest. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will rest his legs as the designated hitter in his absence, with Cavan Biggio starting at first base.

Remains sidelined
Gurriel (hand) remains on the bench for Saturday's game against the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel sits for the second straight game after receiving stitches on his right middle finger. ANALYSIS
Gurriel hit one of three home runs on the night for the Blue Jays, with his coming in the fifth off Shane Baz. The 27-year-old is in the midst of a crazy productive month at the plate, as he's slashing .358/.429/.761 with six homers, 28 RBI, 16 runs scored and 9:11 BB:K over 19 games in September. He is a large part in helping the Blue Jays climb back into the Wild Card picture with just under two weeks left to go in the season.
Sep 14, 2021
Three more hits Monday
Gurriel went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI in Monday's 8-1 win over the Rays.
ANALYSIS
All three hits were singles, but it was still a very productive night for Gurriel. The 27-year-old has multi-hit efforts in four of his last five games as part of a seven-game hitting streak, and he's slashing an eye-popping .435/.509/.913 through 13 contests in September with five homers, 15 runs and an absurd 26 RBI.

ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old struck early with a first-inning grand slam, and he added a two-run shot in the fifth inning. Gurriel scored each time he got on base, which included twice in the 10-run third inning and again in the sixth after a bases-loaded walk. The ridiculous performance capped a stellar four-game series versus Baltimore for Gurriel, who went 7-for-13 with three homers, five walks, 10 RBI and seven runs scored in that stretch. He's up to 19 homers -- one off his career high -- with 78 RBI, 56 runs scored, a stolen base and a .283/.328/.474 slash line in 489 plate appearances overall.

The 27-year-old's solid Saturday has his slash line up to .280/.322/.460 with 17 long balls, 71 RBI, 51 runs scored and a stolen base through 483 plate appearances. ANALYSIS
Gurriel is enjoying playing against Oakland -- he's knocked a pair of homers and driven in eight in the last two games. The 27-year-old opened the scoring with a solo shot in the second inning before adding a bases-loaded double in the eighth to provide Toronto with valuable insurance. For the year, he's up to 16 homers, 64 RBI, 46 runs scored, a stolen base and 24 doubles through 450 plate appearances. Gurriel has added a sturdy .277/.314/.449 slash line.
Sep 4, 2021
Launches grand slam Friday
Gurriel went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Friday's 11-10 win over the A's.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old supplied the biggest hit in the Jays' shocking six-run rally in the eighth inning that tied the game, setting the stage for Marcus Semien's walkoff blast in the ninth. Gurriel hadn't gone yard since Aug. 12, snapping a 16-game homerless drought, and on the season he has 15 home runs and 60 RBI through 117 games in addition to a .273/.311/.437 slash line.
Aug 30, 2021
Out of Monday's lineup

Aug 22, 2021
Tallies three hits
Gurriel went 3-for-5 with an RBI in Sunday's 5-3 extra-innings loss to Detroit.
ANALYSIS
All three of the 27-year-old's hits were singles, including one that plated Corey Dickerson in the eighth inning. Gurriel has hit safely in eight of his last 10 games, going 12-for-31 (.387) with two home runs, nine RBI and three runs scored in that span. He's slashing .270/.304/.435 through 409 plate appearances overall.
Aug 21, 2021
On base three times
Gurriel went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks in Friday's 4-1 extra-inning loss to Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Friday was just the second multi-walk game for Gurriel this season. He's walking at just a 4.7 percent rate this season, and he hadn't drawn a free pass since Aug. 3. The 27-year-old has still been a solid batter with a .267/.303/.436 slash line, 14 home runs, 52 RBI, 43 runs scored, a stolen base and 21 doubles through 401 plate appearances.
Aug 15, 2021

Connects for late homer
Gurriel went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Thursday's loss to the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel, who had entered the game for left fielder Corey Dickerson (back) in the fifth inning, took Raisel Iglesias deep to left field in the ninth inning to round out the scoring. It was the second straight game with a homer for Gurriel, who has put together a 5-for-9 stretch with five RBI over his last three contests. He'll continue to maintain regular at-bats going forward, particularly if Dickerson's injury keeps him out of the outfield/designated hitter rotation for any length of time.
Aug 12, 2021
Not starting Thursday
Gurriel is not in Thursday's lineup against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel will take a seat for the second time in the series, though the other occasion was in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday. George Springer will take over as designated hitter in his absence, with Corey Dickerson also entering the lineup in left field.
Aug 12, 2021
Posts two XBH in win
Gurriel went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBI and an additional run Wednesday in the Blue Jays' 10-2 win over the Angels.
ANALYSIS
After the excellent night at the dish, Gurriel is now slashing .333/.379/.667 through eight games in August. Though his .731 OPS is more than 150 points below his mark from 2020, Gurriel's solid start to August should help him hold off Corey Dickerson for reps in left field or at designated hitter.
Aug 11, 2021
Plates two runs in nightcap
Gurriel went 1-for-3 with two RBI in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel didn't feature in the first half of the twin bill after going hitless in three of his previous four games, and that streak seemed poised to continue until the sixth inning when he plated two runs off reliever Jose Quijada to score both Bo Bichette and Teoscar Hernandez. The outfielder has been struggling at the plate of late, and he has just seven hits over his last 31 at-bats. He's slashing .242/.317/.396 since the beginning of July.
Aug 10, 2021
Sitting first half of twin bill
Gurriel is not starting Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Angels.
ANALYSIS

Aug 7, 2021
Pops 12th homer
Gurriel went 2-for-5 with a double and a two-run home run in Friday's 12-4 win over the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
His fifth-inning shot off the foul pole in left field chased Nathan Eovaldi from the game as part of a nine-run frame for the Jays. It was Gurriel's first homer since July 18, but since the All-Star break he's slashing a solid .275/.351/.451 with two of his 12 homers on the season.
Aug 4, 2021
On bench Wednesday
Gurriel isn't starting Wednesday's game against Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel will be out of the lineup for the second time in the last three games after he went 2-for-3 with a double, a run, a walk and a strikeout Tuesday. George Springer will serve as the designated hitter while Corey Dickerson enters the lineup in left field.
Aug 2, 2021
Resting Monday
Gurriel is out of the lineup for Monday's game against Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel shook off a minor elbow injury to start in all three games of the Blue Jays' series with the Royals over the weekend, going 2-for-9 with a pair of walks across those contests. The 27-year-old isn't believed to have experienced any sort of setback with the injury, so he's presumably just getting some routine maintenance Monday. Bo Bichette will serve as Toronto's designated hitter against Cleveland, paving the way for George Springer, Randal Grichuk and Teoscar Hernandez to fill out the outfield.
Jul 30, 2021
Back in action
Gurriel (elbow) will bat sixth as the designated hitter Friday against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel was hit in the elbow by a pitch Wednesday against the Red Sox and did not take part in Thursday's contest. His X-rays were negative, however, so it's no surprise to see him back in the lineup after just a brief absence.
Jul 29, 2021

Jul 29, 2021

Gurriel (elbow) isn't starting Thursday's game against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel exited the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Red Sox and will be held out of the lineup for at least one game. Jul 28, 2021
To be re-evaluated Thursday
Gurriel will have his right elbow re-evaluated Thursday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel exited the second game of the team's doubleheader against the Red Sox Wednesday after being hit by a pitch on his elbow. The Blue Jays have not sent him for any imaging, and he is instead icing and going through treatment. More details should be available after his evaluation Thursday.
Jul 28, 2021
Exits after HBP
Gurriel exited the second game of the team's doubleheader against Boston after being hit on the elbow by a pitch, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel was plunked in the final inning of the doubleheader, so this could just be a precautionary move. Prior to his exit, Gurriel had gone 1-for-5 with a run scored across both games.
Jul 25, 2021
On bench Sunday
Gurriel is out of the lineup Sunday against the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel will take a seat for the second time in the series while Toronto is without a designated hitter in an NL park. Teoscar Hernandez, George Springer and Randal Grichuk will start from left to right in the series finale.
Jul 23, 2021
Not starting Friday
Gurriel isn't in the lineup Friday against the Mets.
ANALYSIS

Jul 18, 2021
Smacks 11th home run
Gurriel went 1-for-4 with a grand slam and a strikeout in a 10-0 victory in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader win against Texas.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel took Texas starer Mike Foltynewicz 409-feet deep to left for a grand slam to cap a six-run first inning, though he failed to do anything productive in this other three at-bats. It was the 27-year-old's second July home run after launching five in June and he's now slashing a solid .264/.292/.429.
Jul 7, 2021
Clubs 10th long ball
Gurriel went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run during Tuesday's 7-5 loss to the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel delivered his seventh three-hit performance of the season Wednesday, though his two-run shot during the ninth inning wasn't enough for Toronto to mount a comeback. He had a slow start to the season but is hitting .298 with six home runs, seven doubles, 18 RBI and 14 runs scored in 28 games since the start of June.
Jul 1, 2021
Socks ninth homer
Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Wednesday's 9-7 extra-inning loss to the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
His solo shot in the eighth inning off Anthony Misiewicz tied the game at 6-6, but the Jays couldn't get the job done once the game went to extras. Gurriel has launched three of his nine homers on the year over his last nine games, slashing a dazzling .382/.389/.765 during that stretch with four doubles, seven runs and 10 RBI.
Jun 27, 2021
Takes seat Sunday
Gurriel is not in the starting lineup Sunday against Baltimore, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Teoscar Hernandez, Randal Grichuk and Cavan Biggio will man the outfield from left to right, with Joe Panik stepping in at the hot corner and George Springer serving as the DH. Gurriel figures to be an option off the bench during the series finale, however.
Jun 26, 2021
Three hits in Friday's loss
Gurriel went 3-for-4 with a run scored an an RBI in Friday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old extended his hitting streak to six games with the performance, a stretch during which Gurriel has gone 9-for-22 (.409) with two homers, three doubles, five runs and seven RBI. The return of George Springer has bumped Gurriel down to the eight hole, but when he's locked in he's capable of supplying significant fantasy value from any spot in the batting order.
Jun 25, 2021
Slugs first career grand slam
Gurriel went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Thursday's win over the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
His first-inning blast off Dean Kremer staked the Jays to an early 6-0 lead. The grand slam was the first of Gurriel's career, and the 27-year-old has launched four of his eight homers on the year in June while slashing .271/.297/.514 with nine runs and 11 RBI through 19 games on the month.
Jun 23, 2021
Sitting in NL park
Gurriel is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
With no designated-hitter spot available in Miami, Gurriel will be the odd man out in an outfield that now includes George Springer, who made his return Tuesday from an extended stay on the injured list. Springer will man center field for the second consecutive game, while Teoscar Hernandez and Randal Grichuk start in the corner spots. The Blue Jays will resume American League action against the Orioles, when Gurriel will presumably check back into the starting nine.
Jun 20, 2021
Returns to action Sunday
Gurriel (back) is starting in left field and batting seventh Sunday at Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old sat out Saturday after exiting Friday's contest with a a back injury, but his absence will be limited to one game. The fact Gurriel is playing left field while Teoscar Hernandez serves as the designated hitter indicates the injury was a minor concern.
Jun 19, 2021
Not starting Saturday
Gurriel (back) isn't starting Saturday's game against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel exited Friday's game in the ninth inning after he hurt his back while running, and he'll be held out Saturday as a result. It's not yet clear whether he could be available off the bench, but Jared Hoying will start in left field and bat eighth.
Jun 18, 2021
Dealing with back injury
Gurriel was removed from Friday's game against the Orioles in the ninth inning due to a back injury, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a strikeout to begin Friday's contest, but he apparently hurt his back while running and was unable to bat in the ninth inning. The severity of the issue isn't yet clear, but the 27-year-old is considered day-to-day for now.
Jun 13, 2021
Blasts sixth homer
Gurriel went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and two runs in Sunday's 18-4 win over the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS

Jun 12, 2021
On bench Saturday
Gurriel will hit the bench Saturday against Boston.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel hits the bench after starting 18 straight games. He hit a strong .328/.362/.531 over that stretch. Teoscar Hernandez slides to left field in his absence, with Cavan Biggio starting in right.
Jun 11, 2021
Plates run in loss
Gurriel went 1-for-4 with an RBI in Thursday's loss to the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
The Blue Jays only notched eight hits and two runs all game long, but Gurriel was responsible for one of those runs thanks to his RBI single that scored Vladimir Guerrero in the top of the sixth. The outfielder only has three hits over his last 19 at-bats, though, and he needs to find a way to get out of that slump sooner than later.
Jun 2, 2021
Tallies fifth homer
Gurriel went 3-for-4 with a solo home run Tuesday against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel continued to warm up at the plate, as Tuesday's effort marked his fifth multi-hit game in his last 10 starts. The highlight came in the eighth inning, when he took Zach Pop yard for his fifth homer of the season. Gurriel is now hitting .261/.275/.392 with 18 runs scored and 18 RBI across 190 plate appearances.
May 28, 2021
Strong effort at plate
Gurriel went 2-for-2 with two doubles, three RBI, three runs scored and a walk in Friday's 11-2 win over Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
The left fielder was very productive from the No. 6 spot in the order Friday. In his last seven games, Gurriel is 11-for-26 (.423) with two home runs, five RBI and five runs scored. The 27-year-old started the year cold, but his recent success has lifted his slash line to .257/.274/.380 in 180 plate appearances. He's added four home runs, 17 RBI, 17 runs scored and a stolen base.
May 26, 2021
Socks solo shot Tuesday
Gurriel went 2-for-5 with a home run in Tuesday's win over the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel extended his hitting streak to four games and has notched three multi-hit outings in that span while also homering in back-to-back contests -- Tuesday's long ball was his fourth homer of the campaign. The 27-year-old slugger has been seeing the ball well of late and has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games.
May 22, 2021
Returns to lineup
Gurriel (knee) will start Saturday against the Rays, batting sixth and playing first base.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel missed the last two games with a left knee bruise. It's possible he's still not quite at 100 percent, as he'll start at first base for the first time this season and just the second time in his career.
May 21, 2021
Available off bench
Gurriel (knee) is available off the bench Friday against the Rays, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports.
ANALYSIS
He took batting practice Friday, which is an encouraging sign. Gurriel has been dealing with a left knee contusion for a couple days. Jonathan Davis is getting the start in his stead.
May 21, 2021
Held out Friday
Gurriel (knee) is not in the lineup Friday against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel was unavailable for Thursday's game with a bruised left knee and will be out of the lineup against Friday. Teoscar Hernandez, Jonathan Davis and Randal Grichuk will start from left to right in the outfield for Toronot.
May 20, 2021
Dealing with left knee injury
Gurriel was unavailable for Thursday's game due to a left knee contusion, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear exactly how Gurriel picked up the injury, though manager Charlie Montoyo noted that he doesn't expect it to be serious. That leaves open the possibility that Gurriel will rejoin the starting lineup for the team's weekend series against the Rays. Santiago Espinal was the addition to the team's lineup in Guerriel's absence Thursday, with Bo Bichette serving as the designated hitter.
May 20, 2021
Takes seat Thursday
Gurriel isn't starting Thursday's game against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel will get a breather after he went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Wednesday's loss to Boston. Teoscar Hernandez will start in left field while Bo Bichette serves as the designated hitter.
May 19, 2021
Another multi-hit performance
Gurriel went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's win over the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel also struck out twice, but other than that, it was another dominant performance at the plate for the young outfielder. He's now riding a five-game hitting streak and has recorded at least two knocks in each of his last two contests.
May 16, 2021
Doubles in two-hit game
Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 4-0 over the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel doubled off Aaron Nola in the second inning, scoring Cavan Biggio on Saturday. The 27-year-old recorded his first multi-hit game in the month of May. He has struggled to consistently hit, slashing .214/.232/.298 in 138 plate appearances. He has just two home runs and 10 RBI.
May 12, 2021
Slow start to May
Gurriel is slashing .154/.154/.231 over 39 at-bats through his first 10 games of May.
ANALYSIS
After closing April with solo home runs in back-to-back starts, Gurriel hasn't been able to carry over the momentum at the plate into the new month. Even before the two-game power binge, Gurriel had been one of the more disappointing bats in the Toronto lineup, and his season OPS now sits at .510 following his slump to begin May. George Springer's (quadriceps) move back to the injured list should continue to keep an everyday role open for Gurriel, but he looks like he'll be more at risk of losing at-bats than Randal Grichuk or Teoscar Hernandez when Springer eventually returns.
May 1, 2021
Belts second homer
Gurriel went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and a second run scored in Friday's 13-5 rout of Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
The Jays put runs on the board in six straight innings, with Gurriel's eighth-inning shot off Tyler Matzek capping the team's scoring -- one of six Toronto homers on the night. The 27-year-old has gone yard in back-to-back games, his only two long balls in April, and he finishes the month hitting .224 with seven runs and seven RBI in 21 games. With George Springer and Teoscar Hernandez both now back in the mix, Gurriel will need to keep heating up to remain a regular part of the starting nine.
Apr 29, 2021
Socks first homer
Gurriel went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Wednesday's 8-2 loss to the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
He was the only Toronto hitter to get to Erick Fedde, taking the right-hander deep in the fifth inning for his first homer of the year. Gurriel has had a rough start to the season, slashing .197/.234/.254 through 20 games, and he'll need to heat up to keep a regular spot in the lineup as the Jays outfield gets healthier.
Apr 18, 2021
Out of Sunday's lineup

Drives in three in twin bill
Gurriel went 1-for-5 with three RBI over both halves in Saturday's doubleheader against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
He kicked things off with a two-run double in the first inning of the matinee, then added a sacrifice fly in the nightcap. Gurriel has had a sluggish start at the plate and came into Saturday with zero extra-base hits and only one RBI, but with four hits in the last three days, his bat may be waking up.
Apr 16, 2021
Reaches base three times
Gurriel went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Thursday's 7-5 loss to Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
The start of 2021 has not been kind to Gurriel, who is hitting just .205 in 39 at-bats with 10 strikeouts. He also missed last weekend due to COVID-19 protocols. The outfielder hit .287 in his first three seasons combined and presumably should begin hitting more consistently this season, with Thursday's outing being a step in the right direction. Gurriel's spot in the lineup appears secure for the time being regardless of his performance, but the return of George Springer (quad), whenever that may occur, will put some pressure on Gurriel to begin producing at the plate.

Returns from COVID IL
The Blue Jays reinstated Gurriel (illness) from the COVID-19 injured list Monday.
ANALYSIS
Toronto placed Gurriel on the COVID-19 IL over the weekend after he experienced some adverse effects to the coronavirus vaccine, but he only needed a couple days to rest up before feeling normal. Gurriel should immediately step back into his usual role as the Jays' everyday left fielder in Monday's series opener versus the Yankees.
Apr 10, 2021

Sluggish spring performance
Gurriel has gone 7-for-29 (.241) with a double, a home run and a 0:8 BB:K through 11 Grapefruit League games.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old hasn't caught fire yet this spring, but there's still little cause for concern. Gurriel heads into 2021 with a career .287/.327/.508 slash line, 42 homers and 118 RBI in 206 big-league games, and the left fielder figures to be a key part of a young Jays lineup this season.

Receiving corner infield reps
General manager Ross Atkins said Friday that Gurriel will receive reps and first and third base in spring training to increase his versatility, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old isn't expected to see extended run at either position in the regular season, but it could provide some flexibility with the Blue Jays adding George Springer and Marcus Semien to the lineup during the offseason. Gurriel, a converted middle infielder, had an .882 OPS with 11 homers in 57 games during 2020 and should continue seeing the bulk of his time in left field.
Sep 28, 2020

ANALYSIS
Gurriel now has five games in September with three or more hits, lifting his average to a career-best .298 with four games left on the Blue Jays' regular-season schedule. With a barrel rate, hard-hit percentage, average exit velocity and expected batting average that all rank in the 75th percentile or better among all hitters, there's plenty of evidence to suggest Gurriel's lofty batting average isn't merely the byproduct of some good fortune on balls in play.

ANALYSIS

Sep 1, 2020
Three hits not enough in loss
Gurriel went 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and a stolen base in Monday's 4-3 loss to Baltimore.

Three hits in Thursday's loss
Gurriel went 3-for-4 with an RBI in Thursday's loss to the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
All three hits were singles, but it was Gurriel's first multi-hit performance of the season. The 26-year-old is now 7-for-22 (.318) through six games with a homer and three RBI, and he should remain a fixture in the heart of the order for the Jays.
Jul 29, 2020
Swats first homer
Gurriel went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's win over the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
He also struck out three times, but the 26-year-old stroked a line drive to center field off Austin Voth in the fourth inning for his first homer of the year. Gurriel reported late to summer camp due to an unspecified issue and then missed additional action with side discomfort, but the lack of prep time before Opening Day doesn't seem to have had much of an impact -- he's collected a hit in all four of his starts to begin the season.
Jul 26, 2020
Returns to bench Sunday
Gurriel is not in the lineup for Sunday's game at Tampa Bay.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old missed Opening Day after experiencing left side discomfort earlier in the week, though he started in left field Saturday and went 1-for-4. There's been no indication Gurriel aggravated the injury, so the team could just be remaining cautious early in the season. Anthony Alford is starting in left field and batting ninth in the series finale.

Jul 24, 2020
Sitting season opener
Gurriel (side) is out of the lineup for Friday's season opener against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old has been battling left side discomfort over the past week and apparently isn't quite ready for game action. Gurriel wasn't previously ruled out for Opening Day and was scheduled to take live batting practice Wednesday and Thursday, so he may not remain sidelined for long. Derek Fisher is starting in left field and batting eighth for the Blue Jays on Friday.
Jul 22, 2020
Continues with live BP
Gurriel (side) is scheduled to take live batting practice Wednesday and Thursday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old's status for Opening Day remains up in the air, but manager Charlie Montoyo indicated if both sessions go well that he should be ready to play Friday in Tampa Bay. Gurriel exited Friday's intrasquad action with left side discomfort, but he's been participating in live batting practice throughout the week. Should he be forced to miss any regular season action, Billy McKinney or Derek Fisher could see opportunities in left field.
Jul 21, 2020
Scheduled for live BP
Gurriel (side) is scheduled to take batting practice Tuesday, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel isn't in the starting lineup for Tuesday's exhibition game against the Red Sox while battling side tightness, but he'll test things out in batting practice to see how his side responds. Manager Charlie Montoyo said Gurriel could be fine for Opening Day, but more clarity could come based on how he feels after taking batting practice. Even if he's ready for the season opener Friday, he could face some limitations to begin the year to prevent a more serious injury.
Jul 20, 2020
Feeling better
Gurriel (side) is feeling good after playing soft toss and hitting off a tee Monday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel has had a rocky few weeks, as he didn't report to camp until last Monday for undisclosed reasons and left an intrasquad game just four days later due to side tightness. While it sounds as if he's more or less healthy now, it remains to be seen how much his workload is limited early in the season due to his lack of practice time.
Jul 19, 2020
May take live BP Monday
Gurriel (side) played catch Sunday and could progress to taking live batting practice Monday, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel was lifted from Friday's intrasquad matchup due to left side discomfort, but his quick return to baseball activities is a promising sign for his progress. The 26-year-old may be ready for Opening Day at Tampa Bay on Friday if he continues without any setbacks.
Jul 18, 2020
Shows improvement Saturday
Gurriel (side) didn't participate in baseball activities Saturday but still "showed improvement" when evaluated, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old was removed from Friday's intrasquad game with left side discomfort, so it's not much of a surprise to see the team expressing caution the following day. Gurriel is considered day-to-day and has no official timetable for his return, leaving his status for Friday's season opener up in the air.
Jul 17, 2020
Exits with side discomfort
Gurriel left Friday's intrasquad game with left side discomfort, Gregor Chisholm of the Toronto Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel experienced left side discomfort during his first at-bat in Friday's intrasquad matchup, and he exited the game as a result. He's scheduled to be re-examined Saturday, at which point the team could get more clarity about the nature and severity of the issue. The 26-year-old missed the first several days of camp for an undisclosed issue and arrived Monday, and it's unclear whether Friday's issue could impact his status for Opening Day.
Jul 13, 2020
Joins Blue Jays camp
Gurriel (undisclosed) arrived at camp Monday, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
An unspecified issue had kept Gurriel away from his teammates until now, but he's since been cleared to join them. With just 11 days remaining until Opening Day, it remains to be seen whether or not he's fully up to speed by the start of the campaign.
Jul 13, 2020
Absent from camp
Gurriel has yet to join the Blue Jays for summer camp due to an unspecified issue, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
Though manager Charlie Montoyo has been unwilling to provide a reason behind Gurriel's absence, the Blue Jays thus far haven't placed the outfielder on the injured list, which suggests the team is optimistic the outfielder will be ready to go for Opening Day. Gurriel posted a story Monday on his personal Instagram account featuring him on a flight, so it's possible that he may be en route to Toronto to join the team for workouts this week. Assuming Gurriel is able to resume on-field work at some point within the next few days, he should be able to get in enough at-bats during intrasquad games to guarantee his availability for the July 24 opener versus the Rays.
Mar 12, 2020
Keeps raking this spring
Gurriel went 2-for-2 with two doubles, a HBP, three runs scored and two RBI in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old is still looking for his first spring homer, but it seems only a matter of time before he goes yard -- Gurriel is slashing .360/.429/.560 through 28 plate appearances with five doubles as he gets ready for an Opening Day assignment as the Jays' starting left fielder.
Feb 20, 2020
In line to hit third
Manager Charlie Montoyo said Thursday that he plans to have Gurriel bat third for the Blue Jays this season, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Gurriel initially looked in line to bat fourth or lower in the Jays' lineup, but Montoyo opted to move him up to third after Vladimir Guerrero expressed a desire to bat cleanup so he would have the benefit of seeing how pitchers attack Gurriel beforehand. Given his 4.8 percent career walk rate, Gurriel doesn't fit the profile of the typical disciplined No. 3 hitter, but the Blue Jays should be able to compensate for his free-swinging ways by surrounding him with three high on-base bats in Bo Bichette, Cavan Biggio and Guerrero. If he can stick in a prominent lineup spot all season, Gurriel should easily surpass his 2019 totals in both RBI (50) and runs (52).
Feb 19, 2020
Could see time at first base
Gurriel could see occasional action at first base this season, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old will be the Jays' regular left fielder after hitting 20 home runs with an .868 OPS through 84 games last year, but depending on the makeup of the team's bench Gurriel could also back up Travis Shaw at first base. "I could see him playing first also, to help us out for a game or two," Montoyo said. "We're facing a lefty or something, he could play first because he's got good hands. I already know that so that could happen." Shaw and Rowdy Tellez, the other 1B/DH on the roster, both hit left-handed, so Gurriel could become the top platoon option at 1B, potentially giving him some extra position eligibility in 2020.
