The numbers of the contract aren't yet clear. In his one year with Toronto, the 31-year-old hit 45 home runs with 102 RBI and 15 stolen bases. Over the past three seasons, including his poor 2020 campaign, Semien has averaged 37 home runs and 93 RBI per 162 games while slashing .268/.346/.509. The 2021 Gold Glove winner is a good defender at second base and shortstop and joins a team lacking a strong option at either position.

Semien rejected Toronto's $18.4 million qualifying offer Monday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.

As expected, the shortstop will test the open market coming off the most impressive season of his MLB career. He smashed a career-high 45 home runs and also set career bests in RBI (102) and stolen bases (15) in 162 games. Semien is just one of a handful of quality shortstops headed for free agency this offseason, as Carlos Correa, Corey Seager and Trevor Story are also set to test the waters.

The Blue Jays extended a qualifying offer to Semien on Saturday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.

Coming off a career year, Semien will likely decline the one-year, $18.4 million qualifying offer and cash in with a large multi-year deal deal. The Blue Jays don't have strong internal candidates to replace Semien, so they could remain in the mix to bring him back even if he declines the offer.

In a loaded Toronto lineup, Semien won't be one of the core pieces as he was in Oakland, but he could still provide strong fantasy numbers.

Semien also played all 162 games for the first time in his career in 2019, and he also suited up for 473 of a possible 486 games over the 2015, 2016 and 2018 campaigns. Therefore, the 29-year-old is likely to have the entire 60-game canvas afforded by the 2020 regular season to try and make another strong case for a lucrative long-term contract, although it remains to be seen what the financial environment across MLB will be this coming winter.

Semien, who is due to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason, may find it difficult to maximize his earnings with the Athletics or another team due to the depressed financial climate expected from an abbreviated or cancelled 2020 campaign, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Semien is already guaranteed to receive a full year of service time for 2020 under any circumstance as part of an agreement reached between the MLB and MLBPA in late March. However, his original $13 million salary for the delayed regular season will be significantly depleted due to the reduction in games expected, and Semien's ability to begin making up for lost income with his next contract could also be compromised. Slusser reports the veteran shortstop is already a long shot to re-sign with the Athletics on a multi-year deal due to the organization's goal of retaining at least one of Matt Chapman and Matt Olson, but she adds that they could even struggle to extend him a qualifying offer that is still likely to be in the $18 million range due to financial hardship.
