No lingering issues with oblique
McLain said Thursday that his late-season right oblique strain is fully healed, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
McLain landed on the injured list Aug. 28 after straining his right oblique and then suffered a setback just as he was about to return to the Reds in late September. He began light workouts in late October, however, and is now back to full strength here at the end of November. "Things are going good," said the 2023 breakout infielder. "I started to swing, no problems. Lifting, no problems."

Rehabbing in Arizona
McLain (oblique) has begun rehab work at the Reds' spring training complex in Arizona, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
McLain wound up missing the final month-plus of the season with an oblique injury which he aggravated in late September. He's on the mend now, though, and should be healed up well ahead of spring training. McLain is in line to hold down a starting spot in the Reds' infield in 2024, with the position yet to be determined.

Shut down with oblique injury
McLain aggravated his right oblique Sunday and has been ruled out for the remainder of the regular season, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
McLain was on the cusp of returning to the Reds following a nearly four-week absence for a right oblique strain, but the injury reappeared as he was playing in a minor-league rehab game this weekend with Triple-A Louisville. A fresh round of imaging scans taken Monday revealed it to be a Grade 2 strain, so he can probably be ruled out for a potential postseason run as well. The 24-year-old infielder finishes his rookie campaign with a .290/.357/.507 batting line, 16 homers, 50 RBI, 14 steals and 65 runs scored in 89 major-league games.

Not activated Tuesday
McLain (oblique) will not be activated from the injured list ahead of Tuesday's game at Cleveland, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
McLain apparently needs at least one more day to recover from the right oblique strain that sent him to the IL in late August. He spent the weekend on a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville and went 1-for-6 with a single, a walk and three strikeouts.
Sep 23, 2023
In Triple-A for rehab-assignment
McLain (oblique) was sent to Triple-A Louisville on a rehab-assignment Saturday.
ANALYSIS
McLain remains on track to be activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday. The infielder had resumed taking batting practice earlier in the week as he nears the end of his recovery from a right oblique strain.
Sep 22, 2023
On track for Tuesday
Manager David Bell said McLain (oblique) remains on track to be activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
McLain resumed taking batting practice earlier this week and is nearing the end of his recovery from the right oblique strain that has kept him on the shelf since late August. The 24-year-old infielder had delivered an impressive .290/.357/.507 slash line with 16 homers and 14 steals across his first 89 major-league games prior to suffering the injury.
Sep 18, 2023
Could be activated next week
Reds manager David Bell said McLain (oblique) could be reinstated from the 10-day injured list as soon as next Tuesday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Per MLB.com, McLain is expected to resume taking batting practice Monday, and if all goes well while he spends the upcoming week gradually ramping up the intensity of his baseball activities, he could get the green light to rejoin the Reds for the final week of the regular season. While McLain has been on the shelf since Aug. 28 with a right oblique strain, fellow rookie Noelvi Marte has been able to pick up more work on the left side of the infield.
Sep 3, 2023
Out multiple weeks
Reds manager David Bell said Sunday that McLain (oblique) will be out for another two-to-three weeks, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
McLain landed on the injured list Monday with a right oblique strain, and while it doesn't seem like a return is imminent, there is still room for McLain to return before the end of the season. Spencer Steer has been filling in as the Reds' second baseman while McLain is out, and Elly De La Cruz has been playing at shortstop.
Aug 29, 2023
Timeline for return uncertain
Manager David Bell said Monday that McLain (oblique) is without a clear timeline for a return from the 10-day injured list, but the Reds are hopeful the rookie will play again this season, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
McLain was surprisingly placed on the 10-day injured list prior to Monday's 4-1 loss to the Giants after he was sent in for a precautionary MRI on Sunday and diagnosed with a right oblique strain. The Reds are still in the process of determining whether McLain is dealing with a Grade 1 or Grade 2 strain, the latter of which would necessitate a longer recovery timeline. If McLain's injury is on the milder side, he would have a chance at being available to return from the IL when first eligible Sept. 8.
Aug 28, 2023
Placed on injured list
McLain was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday with a right oblique strain.
ANALYSIS
It was reported earlier in the day that McLain would not start Monday's game against the Diamondbacks, and it appeared he was getting a simple day off. However, it turns out he is dealing with an injury that will cost him the next 10 days of action. A timeline for his recovery was not revealed, so it remains to be seen when he will be back on the field. Expect Elly De La Cruz to serve as Cincinnati's regular shortstop until McLain is ready to resume playing.
Aug 28, 2023
Receives rare rest day
McClain is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
McClain went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Sunday's loss to the Diamondbacks, so manager David Bell decided it was time for McClain's first day off since Aug. 7. Elly De La Cruz will slide over and cover the shortstop position in McClain's place.

Homer, steal in extra-innings win
McLain went 2-for-6 with a solo home run, an additional RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's 8-7 extra-innings win over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
McLain got the Reds on the board in the sixth inning with his solo homer, and he tied the game by knocking in a run with a groundout in the ninth. He was again responsible for extending the game in the 10th, though it was because of a fielding error that allowed Arizona to keep a rally alive. He's knocked three homers and added six RBI over his last six games. For the season, the infielder is at a .294/.361/.512 slash line with 16 homers, 14 steals, 50 RBI, 65 runs scored, 23 doubles and four triples through 88 contests.
Aug 24, 2023
Goes deep in nightcap
McLain went 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and a stolen base in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader sweep of the Angels.
ANALYSIS
McLain had himself a day, going a combined 3-for-8 with a home run, three RBI, two stolen bases and five total runs across both games. Batting second or third in the order since being called up in May, McLain is second on the club with 63 runs scored over 85 games.
Aug 23, 2023
Crosses plate four times in win
McLain went 1-for-3 with two walks, four runs scored and a stolen base in a 9-4 win over the Angels during the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
ANALYSIS
Batting second in front of Elly De La Cruz has its perks, as McLain crossed the plate in the fourth, fifth, seventh and ninth innings to help the Reds pull away. McLain is batting .278 (20-for-72) in August with three of his 14 homers and four of his 12 steals since joining the big-league roster in mid-May.
Aug 23, 2023
Smacks 14th homer
McLain went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's win over the Angels.
ANALYSIS
McLain got the Reds on the board early, tagging Lucas Giolito for a solo home run in the first inning. The long ball would end up being McLain's only hit on the day, moving him to 1-for-10 (.100) over his last three appearances. Despite McLain's sub-par 28.3 percent strikeout rate, he's been a reliable part of the Reds order, slashing .295/.363/.510 with 58 runs scored and 11 stolen bases through 83 games.
Aug 16, 2023
Fills up stat sheet in win
McLain went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, three RBI and two steals in Wednesday's 7-2 win over the Guardians.
ANALYSIS
McLain opened the scoring Wednesday with an RBI double in the first inning before adding a two-run homer off Noah Syndergaard in the fourth. The 24-year-old shortstop would also add his 10th and 11th stolen bases in the contest. McLain's huge night snapped a brief slump -- he'd gone 5-for-32 (.156) over his previous eight games. He's now slashing .298/.363/.514 with 13 homers, 56 runs scored and 44 RBI through 358 plate appearances in an impressive rookie campaign.
Aug 7, 2023
Taking seat Monday
McLain is absent from the lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
The Reds are rolling with Elly De La Cruz at shortstop, Spencer Steer at third base and Kevin Newman at second against rookie right-hander Eury Perez. It's McLain's first day off since July 20.
Aug 4, 2023
Records steal in loss
McLain went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Thursday's 5-3 loss to the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
McLain swiped his ninth base of the season in the third inning but was stranded there, as the Reds went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. The infielder has a combined 19 steals between Triple-A Louisville and the majors in 2023. He also struck out twice, raising his count to 15 over the last 34 plate appearances (44.1 K%).
Jul 30, 2023
Pops homer Sunday
McLain went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Sunday's 9-0 win over the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
McLain had gone six games without a homer, though he's gone deep four times while batting .321 (17-for-53) since the All-Star break. The infielder is up to 11 long balls on the year. He's maintained a .305/.375/.530 slash line with 37 RBI, 50 runs scored and eight stolen bases over 65 contests. With Jonathan India (foot) going on the injured list, McLain may pick up a bit more time at second base rather than shortstop going forward, though he should still be a near-everyday player regardless.
Jul 29, 2023
Doubles twice, scores in win
McLain went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored in Friday's 6-5 win over the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
McLain was involved in the Reds' three-run first inning when he doubled and came home on Jake Fraley's home run. He's been a steady contributor since coming up in May with no extended slumps during his time in the majors. The middle infielder has never gone more than two games without a hit and is batting .305 with 10 home runs, 36 RBI, eight stolen bases and 48 runs over 63 games.
Jul 22, 2023
Belts first career grand slam
McLain went 2-for-4 with a walk, a grand slam, a second run scored and a stolen base in Friday's 9-6 win over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
The rookie shortstop supplied the biggest blow on the night, driving a 100.9 mph fastball from Justin Martinez over the right-field fence in the fifth inning for McLain's first career grand slam. It's his ninth homer of the season and second in his last four games, and through his first 57 big-league contests he's slashing an impressive .301/.367/.519 with eight steals, 34 RBI and 44 runs.
Jul 20, 2023
Getting breather Thursday
McLain is out of the lineup Thursday against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
It's a rare day off for the rookie infielder. The Reds are going with Elly De La Cruz at shortstop and Spencer Steer at third base for their matinee versus San Francisco.
Jul 9, 2023
Swipes two bags Saturday
McLain went 3-for-5 with a run and two stolen bases in an 8-5 victory versus the Brewers on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
McLain notched his first MLB game with multiple steals and pushed his total to seven (on 11 attempts) on the season. The talented shortstop also finished with his fifth MLB game with at least three hits. Though he's been overshadowed by the sensational exploits of fellow rookie Elly De La Cruz, McLain has been very good in his own right, posting a .301/.368/.512 slash line, seven homers, 29 RBI, 37 runs and the seven steals over 231 plate appearances while holding down an everyday spot for the first-place Reds.
Jul 1, 2023
Key contributor in win
McClain went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Friday's 7-5 extra-innings win over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
McClain saved the day for the Reds with a game-tying, two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning. The young shortstop set up the heroics to follow in the 11th when two other young Cincinnati stars -- Elly De La Cruz (double) and Spencer Steer (homer) closed out the Padres. McClain is rolling right now with hits in five of the last six games, going 10-for-29 with four doubles, four home runs, 12 RBI and six runs scored during that stretch.
Jun 28, 2023
Homers, drives in two in win
McLain went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and two RBI in Tuesday's 3-1 victory over the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
McLain got the Reds on the board in the fourth inning with an RBI double, tying the game 1-1, before giving them the lead with a solo homer off Tyler Wells in the sixth. The 23-year-old McLain has been on a tear, going 8-for-18 (.429) with three home runs and nine RBI in his last four games. Overall, he's slashing .321/.378/.552 with six homers, 31 runs scored, 24 RBI and four steals through 180 plate appearances in his rookie campaign.
Jun 25, 2023
Powers up in Sunday's loss
McLain went 4-for-5 with a home run, three doubles, five RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's 7-6 loss to Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
This was McLain's second game in a row with a homer, and his fourth multi-hit effort in his last 10 contests. The infielder got the nod at second base with Jonathan India receiving a day off. McLain has stepped up since his big-league debut May 15, slashing .325/.380/.541 with five homers, 22 RBI, 30 runs scored, four stolen bases, 11 doubles and four triples over 37 games. He's primarily played at shortstop and looks set to hold onto an everyday role.
Jun 25, 2023
Swats fourth homer
McLain went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run Saturday in a loss to Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
McLain had been struggling for the first time as a big-leaguer heading into the contest, going 2-for-16 with five strikeouts over his previous five games. He put that behind him with the two-hit effort that included his fourth long ball of the season. McLain has posted an excellent .309/.367/.493 though his first 36 major-league games while establishing himself as Cincinnati's everyday shortstop.
Jun 21, 2023
Heads to bench Wednesday
McLain is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
Since his call-up from Triple-A Louisville on May 15, McLain had started in all but one of the Reds' last 33 games, so he'll get a well-deserved breather in the series finale with Colorado. The Reds will roll out a starting infield of Joey Votto, Jonathan India, Elly De La Cruz and Spencer Steer on Wednesday.
Jun 15, 2023
Hits third home run
McLain went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and an additional run scored in Wednesday's 7-4 victory over the Royals.
ANALYSIS
McLain hit his first home run since May 24 and notched his 13th multi-hit effort across just 28 games (132 plate appearances). The rookie has remained at shortstop after the elevation of Elly De La Cruz and is locked into the No. 2 hole in Cincinnati's emerging lineup. McLain is slashing .328/.379/.516 with three home runs, 13 RBI, two stolen bases and 23 runs scored to start his big-league career.
Jun 7, 2023
Supplies game winning hit
McLain went 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 9-8 win over the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
All three of McLain's hits went for singles but his last one came with bases loaded in the ninth to walk it off for the Reds. Across 20 games in the majors, the 23-year-old has nine multi-hit efforts and is slashing a ridiculous .341/.396/.500 with two homers, 10 RBI, 17 runs and a 7:25 BB:K. Even with the promotion of Elly De La Cruz, McLain remained at shortstop and appears to be cemented into the No. 2 spot for a young and promising Reds lineup.
May 29, 2023
Four more hits in win
McLain went 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI, a run scored and a steal in Sunday's win over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
McLain capped off his big week with a bang, tallying multiple hits for the third straight game while also notching his first big league steal. Over the last seven games, the 23-year-old has gone 15-for-31 with two homers, seven RBI, nine runs and a 3:6 BB:K. McClain has strictly hit out of the two spot across 12 starts thus far and is contributing to what is becoming a dangerous hitting trio at the top of the order with Jonathan India and Spencer Steer.
May 26, 2023
Continues hot hitting
McLain went 3-for-5 with a walk and one run scored in Friday's 9-0 victory over the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
All three of McLain's hits were singles, and it was the rookie's first three-hit game of his career. The shortstop has been a consistent offensive threat since being called up in mid-May, hitting safely in eight of his first 10 big-league games. Over his last five appearances, McLain has totaled nine hits (four extra-base knocks), five RBI, three walks and six runs scored across 24 at-bats. For the moment, he appears to be the Reds' everyday shortstop, as Jose Barrero has started playing more outfield with Wil Myers (illness) on the injured list.
May 25, 2023
Goes yard for second straight day
McLain went 2-for-5 with a double, a solo home run and a second run scored in Wednesday's 10-3 win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
One day after launching his first career homer, McLain went yard again, although this time he got some help -- his drive to the wall in right field in the fourth inning bounced off the glove of a leaping Oscar Mercado and hopped over the fence. McLain has quickly shown his stellar numbers at Triple-A this season were no fluke, batting .281 (9-for-32) through his first eight big-league games with four doubles and two home runs, but his 4:14 BB:K indicates he will need to make some adjustments down the road.
May 23, 2023
Launches first big-league homer
McLain went 1-for-3 with a walk, a home run and three RBI in Tuesday's 8-5 loss to the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
The rookie launched his first career homer in the third inning, driving a two-run shot the other way to right field off Adam Wainwright. McLain was also caught stealing for the first time in the majors, but the 23-year-old shortstop has otherwise had a solid start to his big-league career, batting .259 (7-for-27) through seven games with three doubles, five RBI and seven runs.
May 17, 2023
Breather Wednesday
McLain is not in the starting lineup Wednesday versus the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
McLain will get a breather after he went 2-for-8 with a double, an RBI, two runs scored, a walk and four strikeouts over his first two major-league games. Jose Barrero will draw the start at shortstop and bat eighth in the series finale with Colorado.
