Ready to throw off mound
Meyer (elbow) will begin a bullpen progression this week, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Making his way back from last August's Tommy John surgery, Meyer has thrown on flat ground without incident and is ready to progress to the bump. It's possible he'll be ready for games by the Arizona Fall League, with the hope that he'll be full-go for the 2024 campaign.

Candidate to pitch in AFL
Meyer (elbow) could recover in time to pitch in the Arizona Fall League, Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
He underwent Tommy John surgery last August and is unlikely to be a full-go until October. The AFL runs from early-October through mid-November, so it wouldn't be surprising if Meyer isn't quite ready in time, but he should at least be a full participant in spring training.
May 30, 2023
Throwing out to 135 feet
Meyer (elbow) has extended his flat-ground throwing to 135 feet, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Meyer underwent Tommy John surgery last August and might not appear in any sort of live games in 2023, but he continues to take encouraging steps. The 24-year-old right-hander still ranks as a top-100 prospect through the recovery process and might be a candidate for the Opening Day rotation in Miami next season.

Extends throwing distance
The Marlins announced Monday that Meyer (elbow) has increased his throwing distance off flat ground to 90 feet, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
It's another marginal step forward for Meyer in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, as the right-hander had been limited to playing catch from 75 feet over the past two weeks. Meyer still appears to be at least a couple weeks away from completing his flat-ground throwing progression before he's cleared to start throwing off a mound.

Tossing from 75 feet out
The Marlins announced Monday that Meyer (elbow) has been cleared to play catch from 75 feet, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Meyer recently appears to have initiated a throwing program after spending the past few months navigating the early stages of his rehab from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent Aug. 9. The Marlins are still developing the 24-year-old right-hander as a starting pitcher, but if he avoids any setbacks while passing through the multiple checkpoints he still needs to clear in his rehab program, he likely won't be available as anything more than a multi-inning reliever in the event he returns from the 60-day injured list before season's end, which is far from a sure thing.
Mar 30, 2023
Placed on 60-day IL
Meyer (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Meyer required Tommy John surgery last August and probably won't be ready for live action again until the closing weeks of the 2023 regular season.
Jan 18, 2023
Nearing return to throwing
Meyer (elbow) said Wednesday he expects to begin a throwing program within the next few weeks, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery in August, so a return to throwing six months later would be an encouraging sign for his recovery timeline. Meyer still faces a lengthy rehab schedule to build back his arm strength, but a return late in the 2023 campaign appears possible, assuming he avoids any setbacks.
Aug 9, 2022
Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Meyer (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With the procedure now behind him, Meyer will begin working his way back from the elbow injury he suffered in late July. It remains to be seen how long he will need to recover, but chances are he will miss most or all of the 2023 campaign.
Jul 29, 2022
Moved to 60-day IL
Meyer (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Meyer needs Tommy John surgery, and it couldn't have come at a worse time in the calendar, as he may not be ready for game action until after the 2023 season. In the meantime, Trevor Rogers also landed on the shelf with backs spasms so Nick Neidert may be on his way up from Triple-A to join the Marlins' rotation.
Jul 28, 2022
Requires Tommy John surgery
Meyer (elbow) underwent an MRI on Monday that revealed a tear in his UCL that will require Tommy John surgery, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Meyer exited his second major-league start due to right elbow discomfort, and the issue will ultimately force him to miss the rest of the 2022 season and most or all of next year. It's a significant blow for the highly-regarded prospect, who posted a 3.72 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 58 innings over 12 starts at Triple-A Jacksonville this year prior to making his big-league debut in mid-July.
Jul 24, 2022
Heading to injured list
Meyer was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a sprained right elbow, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old exited Saturday's start with elbow discomfort during the first inning, and he'll now move to the IL after being diagnosed with a sprain. The severity of the injury remains unclear, but it wouldn't be surprising if Meyer is on the shelf beyond the 15-day minimum given it's an elbow issue.
Jul 23, 2022
Dealing with elbow discomfort
Meyer left Saturday's start versus the Pirates with right elbow discomfort.
ANALYSIS
After leaving the start against the Pirates in the first inning, it was deemed that Meyer was dealing with right elbow discomfort. The rookie was sidelined earlier this season with ulnar nerve irritation in the same elbow, making the news particularly troublesome for the right-hander. Meyer seems likely to be placed on the 15-day injured list in the coming days.
Jul 23, 2022
Exits start early
Meyer exited Saturday's start against the Pirates in the first inning with an undisclosed injury, Jake Crouse of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Meyer retired the first two batters he faced in the outing, but left the contest after walking Ke'Bryan Hayes and signaling to the dugout. The rookie appears to have been dealing with soreness in his right arm and more information will likely be provided later in the evening. Zach Pop replaced him on the mound.
Jul 22, 2022
Remains in rotation
Meyer is listed as the Marlins' scheduled starting pitcher for Saturday's game in Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
The Marlins' decision not to immediately option Meyer to Triple-A Jacksonville following his MLB debut July 16 was a strong indication the right-hander would stick in the rotation coming out of the All-Star break, but now the matter is official. Though he'll get another start Saturday, Meyer may need to deliver better results to build some security in the rotation after he yielded five runs on seven hits -- including two home runs -- and one walk across 5.1 innings in a loss to the Phillies his last time out. Both Edward Cabrera (elbow) and Jesus Luzardo (forearm) are in the midst of rehab assignments and could displace Meyer from the rotation once either pitcher is activated, likely in early August.
Jul 17, 2022
Yields five runs in debut
Meyer (0-1) took the loss against Philadelphia on Saturday, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk over 5.1 innings He struck out five batters.
ANALYSIS
Meyer was called up prior to the game to make his big-league debut. The 23-year-old navigated through three scoreless frames before serving up a two-run homer to J.T. Realmuto in the fourth inning. He gave up a solo shot to Rhys Hoskins in the sixth, then watched from the dugout as two more runs were charged to his ledger. Despite the rough debut, Meyer is expected to get additional turns in the rotation following the All-Star break.
Jul 16, 2022
Contract officially selected
Meyer's contract was selected from Triple-A Jacksonville prior to Saturday's start against the Phillies, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Meyer is one of the top pitching prospects in baseball and will make his major-league debut Saturday after he posted a 3.72 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 58 innings over 12 starts in Jacksonville to begin the year. It wouldn't be surprising to see the right-hander make at least one more turn through the rotation following Saturday's start, particularly if Edward Cabrera (elbow) is unable to return shortly after the All-Star break.
Jul 14, 2022
Set for big-league debut
Meyer will be promoted to the majors and start a game during Miami's weekend series against the Phillies, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Meyer is one of the most highly-anticipated pitching prospects to make his debut in 2022. The team has not announced what day he will start, though he would logically replace either Daniel Costano or Trevor Rogers in the rotation. Meyer has maintained a 3.72 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 65:19 K:BB across 58 innings with Triple-A Jacksonville this season.
Jun 21, 2022
Set to rejoin Jacksonville rotation
Meyer (elbow) will be activated from Triple-A Jacksonville's 7-day injured Wednesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Meyer is scheduled to pitch for Jacksonville on Wednesday for the first time since May 17, but it's unclear if he'll start or work out of the bullpen. Edward Cabrera (elbow) is scheduled to make a rehab appearance for Jacksonville on Wednesday, and the Marlins could elect to have pitch ahead of Meyer to better manage his workload. In any case, Meyer looks to be healthy again after a month-long shutdown due to a sore right elbow. The 23-year-old was sharp during his lone rehab start for Single-A Jupiter on July 17, striking out four while allowing one earned run on one hit and no walks over three innings.
Jun 19, 2022
Rehabbing at Single-A
Meyer (elbow) made a rehab start Friday for Single-A Jupiter, striking out four over three innings while allowing one earned run on one hit.
ANALYSIS
Meyer had been sidelined for a month due to ulnar nerve irritation in his right elbow before he made a success return to game action for Jupiter. The Marlins could have Meyer make one more rehab start at Jupiter or with Double-A Pensacola before he's activated from Triple-A Jacksonville's 7-day injured list.
Jun 11, 2022
Throws simulated game
Meyer (elbow) threw a simulated game Saturday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It had been nearly a month since Meyer faced hitters, but he did just that Saturday. It's not entirely clear how close he is to pitching in a game, but his fastball sat in the 94-95 MPH range during Saturday's session, so it should not be long at this point.
May 26, 2022
Resuming throwing program
Meyer (elbow) is scheduled to throw off flat ground Thursday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old landed on the injured list last week with ulnar nerve irritation in his right elbow, but he'll return to throwing Thursday after being shut down for a week. Meyer will likely need some time to build his arm back up, but he could return to mound work soon since the shutdown was relatively brief.
May 19, 2022
Hits injured list with nerve issue
Meyer was placed on the minor-league injured list Thursday with ulnar nerve irritation, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Meyer appears to be closing in on his major-league debut, but he won't get that opportunity in the immediate future. While any arm issue is potentially quite worrisome for a pitcher, however, the Marlins don't appear to be too concerned at this stage. The injury isn't thought to be particularly serious, as he'll skip just one start before being re-evaluated.
May 5, 2022
Could get look in Marlins rotation
Meyer could be promoted to join the big-league rotation in the near future, Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
While the Marlins have had some internal discussions about using their top pitching prospect in the big-league bullpen, where his fastball-slider combination could be dominant, Meyer's success at Triple-A this season -- as well as the struggles of Elieser Hernandez in the Miami rotation -- make it more likely he will debut as a starter. The 23-year-old right-hander has a 1.71 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 33:6 K:BB through 26.1 innings over five starts for Triple-A Jacksonville, while Hernandez has stumbled to a 6.66 ERA and 1.44 WHIP through five starts for the Marlins, including a poor outing against Arizona on Wednesday. While no switch appears imminent, further struggles from Hernandez could accelerate the timeline for Meyer to make his Miami debut.
May 2, 2022
Lasts into seventh inning Saturday
Meyer gave up one run on six hits and one walk over 6.2 innings Saturday for Triple-A Jacksonville in a win over Charlotte. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
It was the longest outing of Meyer's minor-league career to date, and it continued a run of dominance to begin the season that has seen the right-hander deliver a 1.71 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 33:6 K:BB through 26.1 innings over five starts. The Marlins' No. 2 fantasy prospect doesn't seem to have much left to prove in the minors, but he's not yet on the 40-man roster and the organization is going to be keeping a careful eye on his workload. Still, it's likely only a matter of time before the 23-year-old makes his big-league debut.
Apr 22, 2022
Fans seven in scoreless outing
Meyer tossed 5.2 scoreless innings against Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out seven.
ANALYSIS
The Marlins' top pitching prospect left his prior start with a minor calf issue, but it didn't end up costing him a turn in the Jacksonville rotation. Meyer has been brilliant through his first three starts this season, posting a 1.23 ERA, 0.55 WHIP and 20:3 K:BB in 14.2 innings, and the biggest obstacle standing in the way of his big-league debut later this season might be the fact that the 23-year-old isn't yet on the 40-man roster.
Apr 12, 2022
Leaves Tuesday's start
Meyer exited his start with Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday with an apparent leg injury, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Meyer was dealing against Durham prior to suffering the injury, as he delivered five perfect frames to go along with eight strikeouts. The 23-year-old is Miami's top pitching prospect and should be considered day-to-day until more information is available on the injury.
Apr 1, 2022
Moves to minor-league camp
Meyer was reassigned to the Marlins' minor-league spring training Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Meyer received a late-season promotion to Jacksonville last year but spent most of the campaign at Double-A Pensacola, where he posted a 2.41 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 113:40 K:BB over 101 innings. It was the first professional season for the 2020 third-overall pick, and the 23-year-old could see the majors later this year if he continues that level of production at the Triple-A level.
Mar 22, 2022
Dazzles in spring debut
Meyer struck out out five Mets over four perfect innings during Monday's Grapefruit League game.
ANALYSIS
Entering the game in the third inning in relief of Elieser Hernandez, Meyer carved up a New York lineup that included Dominic Smith and J.D. Davis, using his plus slider to get all five of his punchouts while sitting 95-97 mph with his fastball. The 23-year-old right-hander is the Marlins' top pitching prospect after being selected in the first round of the 2020 Draft, rising to Triple-A Jacksonville at the end of last season and posting a 0.90 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 17:2 K:BB in 10 innings over two starts. Miami won't rush him, but if Meyer dominates Triple-A again to begin the 2022 campaign, he could force his way into the big-league rotation this summer despite the fact he isn't yet on the 40-man roster.
Sep 20, 2021
Bound for Triple-A
Meyer will join Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2020 third-overall pick jumped straight to Double-A to begin his professional career this year and impressed over 20 starts. His 2.41 ERA comes with a 27.2 percent strikeout rate and a 52.7 percent groundball rate, which have more than offset a slightly high 9.6 percent walk rate. He'll spend a brief period of time in Jacksonville before the end of the season and will likely open next year at the same level, but he could push for a big-league debut sometime early in the season if he impresses in his early Triple-A starts.
Jul 13, 2021
Tantalizing results in Double-A
Meyer is 4-1 with a 1.69 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 54:27 K:BB across 11 starts for Double-A Pensacola.
ANALYSIS
He's given up one or zero runs in nine of those starts, but even so, Meyer doesn't appear quite ready for the big leagues. He's pitched around a 4.5 BB/9 successfully in Double-A, but that'll be much harder to do at baseball's highest level. It seems like it'd be best for Meyer's development to remain in the minors, work on his command, and refine his changeup. With the Marlins mired in last place in the NL East, they have no reason to rush him.
May 6, 2021
Dazzles in pro debut
Meyer allowed one hit and one walk over five scoreless innings while striking out five to record the win for Double-A Pensacola on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Seeing his first game action since his final college start in March 2020, the third overall pick in that year's draft showed absolutely no rust as Meyer dominated a Mississippi lineup that included top Atlanta prospects Braden Shewmake and Shea Langeliers. He fired 42 of 65 pitches for strikes in an efficient outing, peppering the strike zone with his plus fastball and slider, and if Meyer keeps delivering starts like this a promotion to Triple-A could follow in short order. A 2021 big-league debut in the bullpen isn't even out of the question if the Marlins are hunting for a playoff spot down the stretch and need reinforcements, but the organization is likely to keep a very close eye on his workload given his long layoff.
Mar 5, 2021
Won't see game action this spring
Meyer won't see any Grapefruit League action this spring even though he's in big-league camp, Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald reports. "We don't want Max coming over to a game and trying to throw 100," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said Thursday. "We want him to get ready to pitch this season, continue his development, and we think there's a real risk with those young guys kind of trying to impress and doing too much too early. It's a danger in camp and that's something we're gonna stay away from."
ANALYSIS
The No. 3 overall pick in the 2020 draft will still be able to soak up a big-league atmosphere, but his pro debut will have to wait until the minor-league season begins. With two plus pitches in his slider and fastball, Meyer could get a very aggressive assignment to the high minors and be on the fast track to the majors if he dominates as expected.
Feb 8, 2021
Joining big-league camp
Meyer will join the Marlins' big-league camp this spring.
ANALYSIS
The third-overall pick in the 2020 draft was robbed of the chance to make his professional debut last year thanks to the canceled minor-league season. While he's quite a talented young pitcher, that lack of experience means he's unlikely to be given serious consideration for an Opening Day roster spot.
