Recalled from Indianapolis
The Pirates recalled Gonzales from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Phillies, but he could get a start or two in the final week of the 2023 campaign. The 24-year-old middle infielder has struggled to a .216/.268/.353 batting line across his first 112 major-league plate appearances this season.

Getting call-up for final week
The Pirates plan to recall Gonzales from Triple-A Indianapolis ahead of their three-game series in Philadelphia that begins Tuesday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
After receiving his first call-up to the big leagues in late June, Gonzales received a look in an everyday role in the middle infield but slashed a lowly .216/.268/.353 in 112 plate appearances before being optioned back to Triple-A in early August. Though he'll be back with the Pirates for the final week of the season, Gonzales may only be on hand as a depth option behind the likes of Ji Hwan Bae, Jared Triolo and Liover Peguero.

Heads back to minors
The Pirates optioned Gonzales to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales lost his spot on the 26-man active roster when the Pirates needed to make room for first baseman Alfonso Rivas, whom the team acquired from the Padres on Tuesday. Before the demotion to Triple-A, Gonzales had already seemingly lost hold of a regular role in the middle infield, as Liover Peguero and Akila Williams emerged as the Bucs' primary options at second base and shortstop, respectively. Gonzales turned in a .216/.268/.353 with two home runs and no stolen bases over 112 plate appearances with Pittsburgh in his first stint in the big leagues.

Checks back into lineup
Gonzales will start at second base and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Tigers, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales is back in the lineup after he had been on the bench for two of the Pirates' previous three games. Both of his absences came against right-handed pitchers, with Liover Peguero drawing starts at the keystone over Gonzales on both occasions. Since receiving a call-up from Triple-A Indianapolis in late June, Gonzales is slashing .222/.275/.364 with a 27.5 percent strikeout rate over 109 plate appearances. He could be on the odd man out of the Pittsburgh infield when Ji Hwan Bae (ankle) returns from the 10-day injured list.

Gets Saturday off
Gonzales isn't in the Pirates' lineup Saturday against the Phillies, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales is 0-for-9 with five strikeouts across his last three games, so he'll get a day off Saturday to regroup. Alika Williams will draw the start at shortstop, and Liover Peguero will man second base while Gonzales rests.
Jul 24, 2023
Sitting Monday
Gonzales is not in the starting lineup Monday versus the Padres, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales will take a seat after he went 2-for-11 with a double and two runs scored over the team's series in Los Angeles. Tucupita Marcano will take over at second base and bat eighth in the series opener in San Diego.
Jul 5, 2023
Racks up three hits
Gonzales went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's 9-7 win over the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
He began his career with three hitless efforts, but he's now racked up three straight multi-hit games. Gonzales has showed solid power with two home runs, three doubles and a triple among his 11 hits through 11 games. He's added nine RBI and eight runs scored and should continue to split time between second base and shortstop while Ji Hwan Bae (ankle) is out.
Jul 2, 2023
Launches second homer
Gonzales went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's loss against the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales was responsible for the Pirates' only two runs off Colin Rea with a two-run blast in the second inning. The 2020 first-round pick has gone 6-for-19 (.315) with two homers in his last six games after going 0-for-8 to start his big-league career. Gonzales is now slashing .222/.267/.556 with seven RBI and five runs scored through his first 30 plate appearances after batting .257 with a .820 OPS with Triple-A Indianapolis.
Jul 1, 2023
Heads to bench
Gonzales will sit Saturday against MIlwaukee.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales sits for the second time in eight games since getting called up for the first time last week. He's managed three extra-base hits, including one homer, but he's also striking out at a 32.0 percent clip. Ji Hwan Bae and Tucupita Marcano will be the middle infielders Saturday.
Jun 28, 2023
First MLB hit, home run in win
Gonzales went 2-for-4 with a triple, a homer, two RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's 9-4 victory over the Padres.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales nearly homered in the second inning, settling for a triple off the top of the wall for his first major-league hit. He'd manage to clear the fence in the seventh, crushing a 442-foot homer off Adrian Morejon for his first home run. The 24-year-old Gonzales is now 2-for-12 with an .814 OPS through four big-league games. After slashing .257/.370/.450 in Triple-A, Gonzales should continue to see regular reps as Pittsburgh's starting second baseman.
Jun 24, 2023
Strikes out twice in debut
Gonzales went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts Friday against the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales was promoted for his big-league debut and started at second base while hitting seventh. No conclusions can be drawn from a single start, but he was striking out a 28.6 percent clip with Triple-A Indianapolis prior to his promotion so his ability to make consistent contact will be worth watching. Gonzales should get the opportunity to solidify himself as Pittsburgh's everyday second baseman.
Jun 23, 2023
Called up Friday
Gonzales was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, Stephen J. Nesbitt of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales will join the Pirates in Miami ahead of their three-game series with the Marlins and will be set to make his major-league debut. The 24-year-old has produced a .257 average with six homers, 27 RBI, 38 runs and a stolen base over 218 at-bats in 57 games in Triple-A this season. Gonzales was selected in the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft and is one of the top prospects in Pittsburgh's system, so he'll likely get an extended look in the league.
Mar 19, 2023
Moves to minor-league camp
Gonzales was reassigned to minor-league camp Sunday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales is one of the Pirates' top prospects and had a strong showing in big-league camp with a 1.004 OPS in 16 contests. He spent most of 2022 at Double-A Altoona and had a .263/.383/.429 slash line, so he should move up to Triple-A Indianapolis this year.
Aug 12, 2022
Reinstated from injured list
Gonzales (heel) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Friday at Double-A Altoona, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales had been on the injured list with plantar fasciitis since the end of May, going 3-for-10 with a triple, a double, four RBI, a run and a steal over three games on a rehab assignment in the Florida Complex League prior to being activated. The 2020 first-round pick has a disappointing .742 OPS through 43 games with Altoona this season.
Aug 5, 2022
Starts rehab assignment
Gonzalez reported to the FCL Pirates to begin a rehab assignment Friday, John Dreker of PiratesProspects.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzalez has been sidelined by plantar fasciitis since the end of May but has been cleared for game action in the Florida Complex League. The 23-year-old has a .742 OPS in 43 games for Double-A Altoona this year and will likely require a handful of rehab games before being reinstated to the active roster.
Jul 28, 2022
Game action imminent
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Thursday that Gonzales (heel) is expected to return to "game-like action" in the next week or so, Mike Persak of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
The Pirates will likely start Gonzales out with playing in simulated games at extended spring training in Florida before having him participate in rehab games at one of their lower-level affiliates. The 23-year-old second baseman has been sidelined for nearly two months with plantar fasciitis in his right heel.
Jul 13, 2022
Out of walking boot
Gonzales (heel) has shed his walking boot, Mike Persak of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales progressed well since landing in a walking boot in late June and will now be able to ramp up his recovery process. The 23-year-old is slated to head to the Pirates' extended spring training facility in Florida soon to continue rehabbing.
Jul 6, 2022
Close to shedding boot
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday that Gonzales (heel) will shed his walking boot in 5-to-7 days, Mike Persak of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales has been in a walking boot since late June, but he's been able to swing and play catch while in the boot recently. The 23-year-old will presumably be able to ramp up his activity level once he sheds his boot, but it's not yet clear when he'll be able to return to game action.
Jun 29, 2022
Resumes baseball activities
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday that Gonzales (heel) has been participating in baseball activities while in a walking boot, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales isn't expected to shed his boot for another 7-to-10 days, but it's encouraging that he's been able to swing and play catch while in the boot. It seems likely that the 23-year-old will still be sidelined several more weeks, but he's made encouraging progress so far.
Jun 22, 2022
Managing right plantar fasciitis
Gonzales is dealing with right plantar fasciitis and will be required to spend 2-4 weeks in a walking boot, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales was transferred to the 60-day injured list Tuesday and will be shut down for several weeks after visiting with a foot and ankle specialist. While the right-hander was initially believed to be dealing with heel soreness, he'll likely be kept out of game action until at least late July or early August following his new diagnosis.
Jun 21, 2022
Shifts to 60-day IL
Double-A Altoona transferred Gonzales (heel) from the 7-day injured list to the 60-day iL on Tuesday, Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
When he was first placed on the IL on June 1, Gonzales was considered day-to-day with heel soreness, but the injury was evidently more serious than the Pirates initially believed. The 2020 first-round pick now looks like he'll be sidelined through the end of July, which is another blow to what had already been a somewhat down season for the 23-year-old. Prior to getting hurt, Gonzales was producing slightly better than the league-average player (113 wRC+, .341 wOBA) and had struck out in 32.8 percent of his plate appearances.
Jun 2, 2022
Moves to 7-day IL
Double-A Altoona placed Gonzales (heel) on its 7-day injured list Thursday, Mike Persak of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
The Pirates initially believed Gonzales was dealing with a minor contusion on his heel, but the issue has since proven to be a little more serious than the organization anticipated. That being said, a long-term absence doesn't seem to be in the forecast for Gonzales, who is also expected to change his cleats with the hope of mitigating any potential heel problems moving forward. Gonzales is hitting .247 with four home runs and four stolen bases across 186 plate appearances at Altoona this season.
Jun 1, 2022
Day-to-day with heel discomfort
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday that Gonzales is considered day-to-day with heel discomfort, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales exited Tuesday's game at Double-A Altoona, but his injury doesn't appear to be particularly concerning. Over 25 games in May, the 23-year-old hit .266 with two homers, five doubles, 16 runs, nine RBI and a stolen base.
Jun 1, 2022
Leaves with injury
Gonzales exited Tuesday's game with Double-A Altoona with an apparent leg injury, Jarrod Prugar of DK Pittsburgh Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales entered Tuesday's matchup against Bowie with a .935 OPS over his past 16 games, but he was forced from the contest after going 0-for-2 with a walk. It's unclear if the 22-year-old will require a stint on the injured list, so for now he should be considered day-to-day.
May 18, 2022
Shows signs of life with big day
Gonzales went 3-for-4 with a homer and two doubles for Double-A Altoona on Tuesday, followed by two more hits Wednesday, but he's still hitting just .243/.363/.378 on the season.
ANALYSIS
It's been an awfully tough campaign to this point, but Gonzales seems to be getting right at the dish, as he now has a six-game hitting streak going. As of May 10, he was hitting .180/.324/.292, so he's certainly made significant strides recently. With a sky-high 34.1 percent strikeout rate, it's very clear what Gonzales needs to work on right now -- and he has made a little progress on that front over the course of this streak. He'll likely need to do a lot more, though, before the Pirates see fit to promote him to Triple-A.

Looks good in spring action
Gonzales went 5-for-11 with a pair of doubles, a steal and a 1:2 BB:K during the Pirates' spring-training slate.
ANALYSIS
Fresh off dominating performances in High-A (.303/.385/.565) and the Arizona Fall League (.380/.483/.549), Gonzales just keeps hitting everywhere he goes. His next test will come in Double-A, where he'll open the 2022 campaign, and if his spring performance is any indicator, he won't be intimidated by the increased level of competition. If the Pirates were more competitive, Gonzales would have a shot at coming up this year -- and if Diego Castillo doesn't work out, he still might -- but it's more likely that he'll be in position to push for an Opening Day roster spot next season.
Aug 30, 2021
Massive day at High-A
Gonzales went 4-for-7 with three home runs, eight RBI and an additional run Sunday for High-A Greensboro in its 19-11 win over Asheville.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales got off to a slow start to his professional career, but the 22-year-old has looked the part of a top-10 draft pick over the past month and a half. Dating back to July 16, Gonzales is slashing .361/.424/.639 with 23 extra-base hits and a 23.3 percent strikeout rate in 36 games.
Aug 5, 2021
Big night at plate
Gonzales went 2-for-4 with a double and his seventh homer Wednesday for High-A Greensboro.
ANALYSIS
After enduring a 5-for-57 stretch, Gonzales has collected 24 hits in his last 65 at-bats. The second baseman has some pronounced splits thus far: he's slashing .300/.364/.620 with seven homers at home and .232/.315/.280 with no home runs on the road. After compiling an 89:79 BB:K in college, Gonzales has put up a 17:61 BB:K, something to watch as he moves through the professional ranks. Still, if he continues to hit at Greensboro then it wouldn't be surprising to see the 22-year-old promoted to Double-A prior to season's end.
Jul 16, 2021
Struggling with whiffs
Gonzales is hitting .214/.287/.419 with five home runs, three steals, 11 RBI and 13 runs through 29 games for High-A Greensboro.
ANALYSIS
The No. 7 overall pick in the 2020 draft, Gonzales was an excellent college hitter, but he hasn't had an easy adjustment to pro ball. He's struck out at a troubling rate -- 34.1 percent -- and it's only gotten worse lately. Over his last seven games, Gonzales has gone 2-for-28 (both singles) with 15 strikeouts and two walks. He'll likely need to address those swing-and-miss issues and pick up the pace before he's able to advance to a higher level of the minors.
Jun 27, 2021
Goes deep again
Gonzales went 1-for-4 with his fourth homer and two RBI on Sunday for High-A Greensboro.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales, who also homered Saturday in his return from the IL list, played this weekend for the first time since fracturing his right pinky finger May 19. The 22-year-old likely only needs experience and good health to become an impact player for the Pirates. It wouldn't be surprising to see Gonzales promoted -- along with fellow infielder Liover Peguero -- to Double-A before summer's end.
Jun 23, 2021
Steps in against live pitching
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczak said Wednesday that Gonzales (finger) has resumed hitting against live pitching at Pittsburgh's spring training site in Bradenton, Fla., Gerard Gilberto of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales will likely advance to playing in simulated games in the coming days, and if all goes well, he should be cleared to rejoin High-A Greensboro at some point next week. The 2020 first-round draft pick has been out for over a month with a fractured right pinkie finger.
Jun 16, 2021
Progressing toward full activity
Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday that Gonzales (finger) could be cleared to resume full baseball activities by the end of June, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales, the No. 7 overall pick in last summer's first-year player draft, appeared in 13 games for High-A Greensboro before being shut down May 19 after fracturing his right pinkie finger. The 22-year-old is seemingly making good progress in his recovery, and assuming he experiences no setbacks once incorporating batting practice and fielding drills into his rehab program, he could be ready to rejoin the Greensboro lineup in early July.
May 21, 2021
Suffers broken pinky
Gonzales suffered a fractured pinky finger during a collision at first base, which is why he was placed on the 7-day injured list at High-A Greensboro on Friday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
As far as injuries go, this one should be pretty minor, particularly regarding Gonzales' long-term development. The No. 7 overall pick in the 2020 draft was hitting .294/.368/.549 with two home runs, two steals and a 16:5 K:BB in 57 plate appearances.
May 21, 2021
On 7-day IL
Gonzales was placed on the 7-day injured list with High-A Greensboro on Friday, John Dreker of Pirates Prospects reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear what the nature of Gonzales' injury is. The star second base prospect was hitting .294/.368/.549 with two home runs, two steals and a 16:5 K:BB in 57 plate appearances.
Feb 2, 2021
Invited to big-league camp
Gonzales will join the Pirates' major-league camp this spring.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales is highly unlikely to be given the chance to actually compete for a roster spot, as the canceled minor-league season robbed last year's seventh-overall pick from making his professional debut. He'll get the opportunity to work with the Pirates' big-league coaching staff this spring in hopes of joining them on a permanent basis sometime in the next few years.
Jul 15, 2020
Set to join roster pool
The Pirates plan to add Gonzales to their 60-man player pool later this week, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzales has already arrived at the Pirates' alternative training site in Altoona and will await the results of his COVID-19 intake tests before he's cleared to work out with the team. The No. 7 overall pick in June's first-year player draft is unlikely to contribute for the big club in 2020, but he should benefit from the exposure to a professional environment over the next few months.
