Battling hamstring strain
Marte suffered a strained hamstring while playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte will no longer be able to participate in winter ball, but he should be ready to go for the start of spring training. The 22-year-old infielder slashed .316/.366/.456 across 123 big-league plate appearances last year and is expected to begin 2024 as Cincinnati's primary third baseman.

Raking to wrap up season
Marte went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and three RBI in Saturday's 15-6 loss to the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
The 21-year-old is having a fantastic finish to the season, hitting safely in seven straight games and batting .355 (11-for-31) over that stretch with two of his three homers since his mid-August promotion to the majors. Marte is expected to be a key part of the Reds' future, and while his spot in the lineup has been secure to close out 2023 due to the absence of Matt McLain (oblique), the team will likely have to do something to alleviate its infield roster crunch in the offseason, either by trading a player such as Jonathan India, or by shifting someone like Marte to the outfield.

Smacks second homer in blowout win
Marte went 2-for-5 with a solo home run -- his second of the season -- and an additional RBI in Friday's 19-2 win over St. Louis.
ANALYSIS
Marte slugged one of six Reds home runs on the night, one shy of matching the franchise single-game record. Cincinnati was able to keep its faint hopes for a wild-card spot alive with the win, and Marte has been an integral contributor to the team's postseason push. The 21-year-old rookie has recorded at least one hit in 14 of his last 15 starts and is slashing .357/.400/.471 in September.
Sep 24, 2023
Not in Sunday's lineup
Marte is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates.
ANALYSIS
Marte started the past three games and will receive a day off after going 3-for-13 with an RBI during that span. Christian Encarnacion-Strand will start at third base and bat fifth.
Sep 19, 2023
Not in lineup Tuesday
Marte is out of the lineup Tuesday versus the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Marte had made two consecutive starts at third base for the Reds, but Christian Encarnacion-Strand will get the nod there Tuesday as Elly De La Cruz covers shortstop. Marte, 21, is sitting on an impressive .304/.368/.405 batting line through his first 87 major-league plate appearances.
Sep 16, 2023
Logs three hits Friday
Marte started at shortstop and went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Friday's 5-3 win over the Mets.
ANALYSIS
Marte slotted in at shortstop while Elly De La Cruz took a seat for the second time this week against a left-hander. As Reds manager David Bell guides the team during a playoff race, he has managed more tactically over the past week, such as playing lefty-righty matchups or sitting slumping players. One of those slumping is the switch-hitting De La Cruz, who is 1-for-23 against lefties going back to Aug. 23 and hitting .194 with a .526 OPS overall against southpaws. That slump is leading to more opportunities for Marte.
Sep 14, 2023
Two hits in return
Marte started at shortstop and went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Wednesday's 4-3 win over Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Marte returned to the starting lineup for the first time since suffering a fractured nose during warmups prior to a game last Saturday. He had resumed playing Tuesday, when he scored the winning run as a pinch runner in extra innings. This was Marte's first start at shortstop, as Elly De La Cruz was given his first rest day since the All-Star break.
Sep 13, 2023
Returns to lineup
Marte (nose) is starting at shortstop and batting seventh Wednesday versus the Tigers in his return to the lineup.
ANALYSIS
Marte scored as a pinch-runner in Tuesday's win over the Tigers, but this will be his first start since he suffered a broken nose pregame Saturday. He's filling in at shortstop for Elly De La Cruz, who is getting a day off.
Sep 13, 2023
Scores as pinch runner
Marte (nose) entered Tuesday's game as a pinch runner in the top of the 10th inning and scored a run in a 6-5 win over the Tigers.
ANALYSIS
Marte made his first appearance since sustaining a broken nose during pre-game warmups Saturday. He replaced Nick Martini as the automatic runner, then played third base in the bottom of the 10th. It's unclear if the Reds are confident enough to have Marte play an entire game.
Sep 12, 2023
Remains sidelined Tuesday
Marte (nose) remains out of the lineup Tuesday at Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Marte suffered a broken nose Saturday when he was struck in the face by a ball during pregame warmups, but he cleared concussion protocol and apparently won't require a stay on the injured list. Nick Senzel is covering third base and batting second for the Reds on Tuesday versus the Tigers.
Sep 10, 2023
Sitting Sunday with broken nose
Marte, who is out of the lineup Sunday against the Cardinals, was diagnosed with a broken nose, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
The 21-year-old was struck in the face while playing catch ahead of Saturday's contest and cleared the concussion protocol, but he's still managing a fractured nose. Marte wasn't placed on the injured list amid a flurry of transactions by the Reds on Sunday, so he may not require a trip to the shelf. He could play soon depending on his pain tolerance and comfort level.
Sep 9, 2023
Avoids concussion, is day-to-day
Marte (face) has avoided a concussion and is considered day-to-day, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte was a late scratch from Saturday's lineup against the Cardinals after being hit in the face with a ball during pregame. He was treated for a cut and a bruise. He did not require any stitches, though, and precautionary concussion testing came back clean. "There's a chance he's back pretty soon," Reds manager David Bell said after Saturday's loss to St. Louis. Cincinnati is off Monday, so it's possible they'll hold Marte out until Tuesday just to be safe. It sounds like he's going to be fine, though.
Sep 9, 2023
Scratched from lineup
Marte was scratched from Cincinnati's lineup ahead of Saturday's game against St. Louis, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte was playing catch with Elly De La Cruz before the game and got hit in the face by a throw when he wasn't paying attention. Spencer Steer will move to third base in Marte's absence, and Alejo Lopez will cover second base Saturday.
Sep 9, 2023
Laces hit, steals home
Marte went 1-for-4 with a run scored and one steal in Friday's 9-4 loss to St. Louis.
ANALYSIS
Marte managed to steal home in the fourth inning after Willson Contreras tried to throw out Spencer Steer in a stolen base attempt at second. He is the second Reds player to steal home this year after Elly De La Cruz achieved the feat July 8 against Milwaukee. Marte now has six steals and is slashing .254/.329/381 over his first 63 at-bats in 19 games.
Sep 5, 2023
3-for-3 with first big-league homer
Marte went 3-for-3 with a double, a solo homer and an additional run scored in Tuesday's comeback win over Seattle.
ANALYSIS
Marte logged the first three-hit performance of his young career Tuesday, reaching on an infield single in the third inning, notching a hustle double in the fifth and blasting his first big-league home run in the sixth. The highly anticipated rookie is now hitting .255 with five doubles, one home run, seven RBI, six runs and five steals across his first 17 games (62 plate appearances).
Aug 27, 2023
Collects fourth steal
Marte went 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's 8-7 extra-innings win over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Marte has seen regular playing time since he was called up a week ago. He's hitting a modest .227 (5-for-22) with two doubles, one RBI and two runs scored, though he's also logged four steals. His speed was on display with 18 thefts over 89 contests in the minors this year prior to his promotion. Marte has mostly played at third base, moving Elly De La Cruz into a more permanent role at shortstop while Matt McLain handles second base.
Aug 25, 2023
Steals, scores in loss
Marte went 1-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Thursday's 3-2 loss to the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
In a game dominated by pitching and some of the league's most exciting rookies, Marte's eighth-inning walk was nearly the difference. After getting on base, the Cincinnati rookie stole second base and scored a go-ahead run on Tyler Stephenson's single. The lead lasted a half inning before Arizona rookie Corbin Carroll delivered a two-run home run. Marte has stolen a base in three of the five games in which he's appeared.
Aug 24, 2023
Bats leadoff in nightcap
Marte started at third base, batted leadoff, and went 0-for-4 with an RBI in second game of Wednesday's doubleheader sweep of the Angels. He did not play in the matinee.
ANALYSIS
Marte's eighth-inning groundout produced his first MLB RBI since being called up last Saturday. The righty-hitting infielder was moved up from the bottom of the order to the leadoff spot, as injuries forced manager David Bell to make a change against left-handed starters. Most recently, Kevin Newman (oblique) or Stuart Fairchild (concussion) batted atop the order. The manager opted for Marte on Wednesday against Angels lefty Reid Detmers in just his third start in the majors.
Aug 23, 2023
Sitting for Game 1 of twin bill
Marte is out of the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Angels.
ANALYSIS
Marte will retreat to the bench for the first game of the day after he picked up his first two big-league starts Sunday and Tuesday, going 2-for-8 with a double and a stolen base. Expect him to re-enter the starting nine at either third base, shortstop or designated hitter for the nightcap.
Aug 21, 2023
Gets first MLB hit
Marte started at third base and went 1-for-4 in Sunday's 10-3 loss to the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Marte made his first MLB start and recorded his first hit with a ninth-inning double. He's expected to serve as the primary third baseman until second baseman Jonathan India (foot) can return. At that point, the Reds will need to accommodate Marte, Elly De La Cruz and Matt McLain at shortstop and third base. DH is a possibility, but there's a need to find spots for Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Joey Votto, not to mention Jake Fraley (toe) when he's ready to return.
Aug 20, 2023
Debuts as pinch runner
Marte entered as a pinch runner in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Blue Jays.
ANALYSIS
Marte was called up earlier in the day and is expected to serve as Cincinnati's primary third baseman while Spencer Steer takes on more work in left field. While it may seem crowded on the roster, injuries to Jake Fraley (toe) and Jonathan India (foot) mean there will be opportunities for Marte.
Aug 19, 2023
Earns major-league call-up
Marte was called up by the Reds on Saturday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte joined the Reds' organization at the 2022 trade deadline in a deal which sent Luis Castillo to Seattle. The 21-year-old has split time between shortstop and third base at the two levels of the minors this season, posting an identical .820 OPS at both stops while adding 11 homers and 18 steals in 89 games. The Reds have a very crowded infield after the arrival of several top prospects this season, though Jonathan India's plantar fasciitis means at-bats are available at least in the short term for Marte to show what he can do.
Jun 25, 2023
Heading to Triple-A
Marte has been promoted to Triple-A Louisville, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte missed time over the first half of June due to a hamstring strain, but he's been back in action recently and has appeared in three games at Double-A Chattanooga over the past few days. The 21-year-old has slashed .281/.356/.464 with eight homers, 37 runs, 25 RBI and 10 stolen bases over 50 games at Chattanooga this year and will now get a chance to compete against a higher level of competition.
Jun 15, 2023
Nursing hamstring strain
Marte has been sidelined at Double-A Chattanooga since June 3 with a hamstring strain, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Rosecrans says the trip to the 7-day injured list was precautionary, so it sounds like a mild strain. On the season, Marte is slashing .293/.366/.484 with eight home runs and 10 steals in 47 games. His 16.9 percent strikeout rate is the best mark of his career and this is his first exposure to Double-A pitching.
May 22, 2023
Heating up at plate
Marte is hitting .365 with seven home runs, four steals and a 12:8 K:BB in his last 85 at-bats at Double-A Chattanooga.
ANALYSIS
Marte got off to a slow start in his first exposure to Double-A pitching, hitting .186 with 17 strikeouts in his first 15 games, but he has been dialed in since then. He has made 25 starts at shortstop and nine starts at third base, with the hot corner being his most likely long-term home.
Apr 24, 2023
Slow start at Double-A
Marte is hitting .186 with one home run, four steals and a 17:7 K:BB in 15 games with Double-A Chattanooga.
ANALYSIS
While Marte has been a high-profile prospect since 2019, this is his first exposure to Double-A pitching and his first season as a primary third baseman, although he hasn't completely moved off shortstop yet. The slugging infielder hasn't gotten to much power yet (.119 ISO) and has been a bit unlucky (.244 BABIP), but his 25.4 percent strikeout rate and 10.4 percent walk rate are reasonable marks for a 21-year-old at Double-A.
Mar 12, 2023
Optioned to Double-A
Marte was optioned Sunday to Double-A Chattanooga by the Reds, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte is one of the top names in the Cincinnati system, but wasn't a candidate for the Opening Day roster. The former Seattle prospect will head to Chattanooga, and could make his MLB debut over the summer with strong results at the upper-levels.
Nov 15, 2022
Added to 40-man roster
Marte was added to the Reds' 40-man roster Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Marte is considered to be one of the best prospects in the Reds' farm system, highlighted by his powerful swing as he hit 19 homers in 2022. He still has yet to play beyond the High-A level, but it seems as though it's only a matter of time before the young shortstop gets his call to the majors.
Oct 29, 2022
Playing with finger injury
Marte has been playing through a finger injury during Arizona Fall League play, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "I have a small injury, a finger, but that is not going to stop me from playing," Marte said. "I want to end the year well. I feel good because on top of that, I'm still working to maintain my physique. We are going to try to finish this strong."
ANALYSIS
Marte has had trouble hitting for average in the Fall League, but he recently hit a massive home run this week. He's also working on learning a new position at third base, with both Matt McLain and Elly De La Cruz also at shortstop at higher levels in the organization.
Sep 21, 2022
Finishes 2022 strong with new org
Marte put up a .293/.397/.443 line with four homers and 10 steals over 30 games with High-A Dayton after being acquired from Seattle at the trade deadline.
ANALYSIS
It seems almost unfair that the Reds can have so many of the game's top shortstop prospects, with Marte and Edwin Arroyo having joined Elly De La Cruz and Matt McLain in the organization this summer. Arguably the jewel of the Luis Castillo deal, Marte was just as good with Dayton as he had been with Everett in the Mariners' organization before the trade. His final line for 2022: .279/.371/.458 with 19 homers, 23 steals and a 59:107 BB:K across 115 games. Marte will also get some extra reps in the Arizona Fall League, per RedsMinorLeagues.com.
Jul 29, 2022
Dealt to Cincy in Castillo deal
Marte was traded from the Mariners to the Reds along with Edwin Arroyo, Andrew Moore and Levi Stoudt in exchange for Luis Castillo, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
ANALYSIS
After a slow start, Marte has heated up over the past couple months and is hitting .270/.360/.460 with 15 home runs, 12 steals, a 10.8 BB% and a 21.1 K% in 84 games at High-A. Marte will face a tough test when he gets bumped to Double-A, possibly before the end of this season. The 6-foot-1 infielder will likely end up at third base long term, although he has only played shortstop thus far in pro ball.
Jul 11, 2022
Major offensive surge at High-A
Marte owns a .447/.553/.895 slash line with two doubles, five home runs, 12 RBI, eight walks, four stolen bases and 18 runs across the 47 plate appearances he's logged in his last 10 games at High-A Everett.
ANALYSIS
The sensational stretch represents a drastic turnaround for Marte, who'd generated a much more modest .234/.330/.377 tally over his first 63 games of the season. The 20-year-old could certainly see a bump up to the Double-A level before season's end if he continues to demonstrate mastery over High-A arms.
Jun 21, 2022
Struggling for AquaSox
Marte owns a .234/.329/.365 slash line with 17 extra-base hits and 23 RBI across 20 games at High-A Everett this season.
ANALYSIS
The precocious 20-year-old has hit a bit of a speed bump this season after an impressive showing over a modest eight-game stint with High-A Everett at the tail end of the 2021 minor-league campaign. Marte has seen a slight bump in strikeout rate to 25.5 percent from his 22.2 percent figure at Modesto last season, and Brent Stecker of 710 ESPN Seattle reports Marte's average has been under .250 since May 25.
May 12, 2022
Warming up in High-A
Marte is hitting a fairly modest .252/.358/.417 with four homers, three steals and a 14:37 BB:K across 26 games for High-A Everett.
ANALYSIS
He's shown some signs of warming up lately, going 6-for-17 (.353) with a homer and a steal across the last four games, but Marte has run hot and cold for the entirety of the season's first month-plus. Before this stretch, he went 3-for-24 in a six-game span -- and before that, he went 8-for-19 over four games. The net is that while Marte's plate discipline has remained strong, his power production and consistency have been issues. After last season's 17 homers and 23 steals in (what was then) Low-A, much more was expected from Marte with the bat. He's had his struggles with the glove, too, with eight errors giving him an unpleasant .922 fielding percentage and making it look increasingly likely that he'll be moved off shortstop at some point. Marte should still be considered a high-end prospect, but it would be good to see more power from him, especially after he closed out 2021 with a lengthy homer drought.
Mar 18, 2022
To see regular Cactus League action
Marte (lower leg), the Mariners' No. 2 prospect, will see regular playing time during Cactus League games per manager Scott Servais, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marte finished 2021, his first professional season, at High-A Everett, slashing .290/.333/.419 over a brief eight-game sample after a productive 99-game tenure at Low-A Modesto. The 20-year-old shortstop is a significant part of the organization's long-term plans, so even though Seattle would reportedly like to add one more impact pitcher, it would be highly hesitant to part with Marte, who's primed to gain some valuable seasoning against big-league arms in spring training.
Mar 5, 2022
Leaves game as precaution
Marte left Saturday's intrasquad game after fouling a ball off his left shin, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com
ANALYSIS
By all reports the move was a precautionary one as there's no reason for Marte to push himself through an injury this close to the start of the season. The infielder is thought of as one of the top prospects in the game after an impressive 2021 campaign spent in Single A.
Sep 6, 2021
Bumped up to High-A
The Mariners promoted Marte from Low-A Modesto to High-A Everett on Monday.
ANALYSIS
The top prospect in the lower levels of the Seattle system, Marte was handed the promotion after slashing .271/.368/.462 with 17 home runs, 23 stolen bases and a 22.2 percent strikeout rate over 478 plate appearances at Low-A. He'll likely finish the season at Everett and begin the 2022 campaign with the affiliate, but a hot September could put him in position for a quick call-up to Arkansas at some point next spring.
Aug 4, 2021
Huge game at Low-A
Marte went 4-for-5 with three home runs, a walk, nine RBI, two additional runs and one stolen base Tuesday in Low-A Modesto's 16-15 loss to Stockton.
ANALYSIS
There was no shortage of offensive fireworks from either team Tuesday, and no player shone brighter than Marte. On the heels of the massive performance, the 19-year-old shortstop pushed his slash line up to .277/.361/.482 over 349 plate appearances. Marte has met expectations and then some during his first season at a full-season affiliate, and a promotion to High-A Everett could be in the cards before the year is out.
Jul 5, 2021
Rolling in Low-A
Marte, who snapped an 11-game hitting streak with Low-A Modesto on Sunday, is hitting .286 with an .882 OPS across 49 games this season.
ANALYSIS
One of three super-prospects for the Mariners, Marte has 10 homers and seven steals with a 29:49 BB:K -- showing the sort of power, speed and patience that makes for star potential. He'll likely step up to High-A at some point this season, but we won't likely see him in the big leagues until 2023.
