Placed on injured list
The Angels placed Sandoval on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right oblique strain.
ANALYSIS
With a week left in the regular season, Sandoval's trip to the IL will cause him to miss the rest of the year. He finishes 2023 with a 4.11 ERA and 1.51 WHIP through 144.2 innings across 28 starts, and he'll be replaced on the roster by Kolton Ingram, who was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move. Sandoval was on track to start the final game of the season Sunday, and the Angels have yet to announce a replacement.

Dealing with oblique injury
Sandoval left Monday's start against Texas with right oblique tightness, Sarah Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
With the Angels already eliminated from postseason contention, it would be surprising to see Sandoval pitch again this year, especially considering the location of his injury. The team should have an official update on his availability down the stretch after evaluating him further over the next day or so.

Exits outing early
Sandoval left Monday's start against the Rangers due to an undisclosed injury, Sarah Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Times reports. He allowed two hits and five walks while striking out two over three scoreless innings prior to exiting.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval suffered the injury in the top of the fourth inning after walking the first two batters he faced, and after receiving a visit from his manager and the trainer, he walked off the mound for the night. He'll be considered day-to-day until the nature of the injury comes into focus.

Punches out seven in no-decision
Sandoval did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over five innings in a 6-2 loss against the Rays. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old gave up a leadoff double to Yandy Diaz and a two-run homer to Randy Arozarena before registering an out in the game and despite allowing at least one baserunner in every inning, Sandoval managed to hold Tampa Bay scoreless for the remainder of his gritty outing. The southpaw didn't issue any free passes in his previous start, but went right back to his wild ways Tuesday, walking at least three for the 15th time in 27 tries this season, which has resulted in a career-worsts in BB/9 (4.38) and WHIP (1.50) through 141.2 innings. Sandoval is tentatively scheduled to face a tough Rangers' lineup at home early next week.
Sep 13, 2023
Takes third straight loss
Sandoval (7-13) allowed eight runs (five earned) on 10 hits and struck out four without walking a batter over five innings, taking the loss Tuesday versus the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval got no support in the 8-0 defeat, as the Angels mustered just four hits. He gave up three runs in the first inning and then five more over the fourth and fifth frames. The one positive was that Sandoval didn't walk a batter for the first time since June 10. The southpaw is at a 4.48 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 119:66 K:BB through 136.2 innings over 26 starts. He's projected for a tough road outing at Tampa Bay next week.
Sep 7, 2023
Bested by Orioles
Sandoval (7-12) allowed seven runs (four earned) on seven hits and four walks while striking out three over five innings to take the loss Wednesday versus the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval has given up at least four runs in four of his last five outings, and he's walked no fewer than three batters in any of those starts. It was fair to expect him to have some difficulty with the Orioles' deep lineup, which produced just one extra-base hit against the southpaw. Sandoval's ERA ticked up to 4.31 with a 1.38 WHIP and 115:66 K:BB through 131.2 innings over 25 starts. He's projected for another tough start in Seattle in next week.
Sep 2, 2023
Struggles in fourth inning
Sandoval (7-11) allowed five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three over 3.2 innings to take the loss Friday versus the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was cruising until a troublesome fourth inning saw Oakland rally for all five runs on his line. It's the third time he's given up five-plus runs over his last four starts, but this is the first time since June 29 that he's surrendered five or more earned runs. The southpaw is at a 4.19 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 112:62 K:BB through 126.2 innings across 24 starts this season, failing to replicate his performance from 2022 when he posted a 2.91 ERA in 148.2 innings. Sandoval is lined up for a difficult home start versus the Orioles next week.
Aug 26, 2023
Stingy in seventh win
Sandoval (7-10) picked up the win in Friday's 3-1 victory over the Mets, allowing one run on two hits and four walks over six innings. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw generated 34 called or swinging strikes among his 107 pitches, and the only blemish on Sandoval's final line came on a Francisco Lindor solo shot in the third inning. Sandoval has given up two earned runs or less in six of seven starts since the All-Star break, posting a 2.89 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 39:23 K:BB through 37.1 innings over that stretch. He lines up to face a choice opponent in his next outing, which is likely to come next weekend in Oakland.
Aug 20, 2023
Falters in loss Saturday
Sandoval (6-10) took the loss against Tampa Bay in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader, allowing six runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out four batters over 4.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval got through three scoreless frames before he yielded two runs on two hits in the fourth. Those were the only two earned runs he surrendered -- when the Rays put up four runs against him in the fifth, they were all unearned due to a two-out error by Jordyn Adams. Still, Sandoval can't be entirely absolved of blame since he gave up four consecutive hits (including two doubles) following Adams' miscue. This was the second straight disappointing outing for the lefty hurler, as he gave up five runs (four earned) over 2.2 frames in his previous start. Prior to the pair of poor performances, Sandoval appeared to be putting things together with a 1.86 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 27:14 :BB over 29 innings across a five-game stretch.
Aug 14, 2023
Walks six in loss
Sandoval (6-9) yielded five runs (four earned) on four hits and six walks over 2.2 innings Monday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval allowed two runs in the second inning followed by three more in the third and struggled with his command all night. He gave up two or fewer runs in five straight starts before Monday's hiccup. His ERA climbed to 4.09 with a lackluster 98:52 K:BB through 112.1 frames. Sandoval is currently lined up to face the Reds at home in his next outing.
Aug 8, 2023
Takes no-decision
Sandoval allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out eight over 6.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval earned a quality start, but he lost his chance at the win when he allowed a game-tying home run to J.D. Davis in the seventh inning. Over his last five outings, Sandoval has given up just nine runs (six earned) across 29 innings. He's now at a 4.02 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 92:46 K:BB through 109.2 innings through 20 starts this season. The southpaw is lined up for a tough road start in Texas next week.
Aug 2, 2023
Tough loss Tuesday
Sandoval (6-8) took the loss Tuesday as the Angels fell 5-1 to Atlanta, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
The lefty wasn't exactly sharp, throwing only 53 of 90 pitches for strikes, but Sandoval was mostly able to escape trouble and limit the damage. Unfortunately, he was out-dueled by Spencer Strider. Sandoval has been tagged for two runs or less in four straight starts since the beginning of July, posting a 2.42 ERA and 1.12 WHIP over that stretch despite a lackluster 19:13 K:BB through 22.1 innings. He'll look for a better result in his next outing, likely to come at home early next week against the Giants.
Jul 28, 2023
Nabs win in nightcap of twin bill
Sandoval (6-7) earned the win in Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against Detroit, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four batters over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval needed 97 pitches to get through five frames, but he kept the Tigers off the scoreboard outside of a two-run third inning. The timing of the left-hander's turn in the rotation in relation to the All-Star break limited him to just three appearances in July, but he pitched well in those outings, posting a 2.08 ERA and 1.04 WHIP over 17.1 frames. Sandoval may be turning things around after compiling a 4.57 ERA and 1.49 WHIP across 15 starts through the end of June.
Jul 26, 2023
Starting nightcap Thursday
Sandoval will start the second game of Thursday's doubleheader at Detroit, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval had been scheduled to pitch Wednesday, but the game was postponed due to inclement weather around Comerica Park. Shohei Ohtani is being moved up to pitch the opener of Thursday's twin-bill and then Sandoval will handle the nightcap.
Jul 26, 2023
Angels-Tigers postponed Wednesday
Sandoval and the Angels won't face the Tigers on Wednesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Detroit.
ANALYSIS
The two teams will make up the postponed game as part of a straight doubleheader Thursday. Expect Sandoval to start one of those games, while Chase Silseth likely takes the hill for the other.
Jul 19, 2023
Strong in fifth win
Sandoval (5-7) allowed a run on two hits and three walks while striking out seven over 7.1 innings, earning the win Tuesday over the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval's control issues popped up again, but he was able to counter it by allowing little dangerous contact. The only run against him was Gleyber Torres' solo home run in the third inning. Sandoval gave up 12 runs (11 earned) over 15 innings across his last three starts before the All-Star break. He's now at a 4.16 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 77:39 K:BB through 93 innings over 17 starts this season. The southpaw is projected to make his next start on the road in Detroit.
Jul 6, 2023
Wild in no-decision
Sandoval logged a no-decision against San Diego on Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and four walks while striking out five batters over five innings.
ANALYSIS
The positive for Sandoval was that he allowed just a pair of singles and one earned run (though a first-inning unearned run was the result of his own error). However, the left-hander struggled with his control, throwing just 48 of 85 pitches for a strike and walking four batters. It was the sixth time over his past eight outings that he's issued multiple free passes, and he's given up four walks three times during that span. Not coincidentally, Sandoval has struggled during that stretch, posting a 5.71 ERA and a 1-5 record. Sandoval's 3.8 BB/9 on the season is on track to be his highest since his rookie campaign.
Jun 29, 2023
Surrenders seven in loss
Sandoval (4-7) took the loss Thursday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and two walks over 5 innings against the White Sox. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Most of the damage against Sandoval came in the third inning, where he allowed six runs on six hits. The 26-year-old left-hander has struggled lately, pitching to a 7.46 ERA through five starts in June. Overall, Sandoval now sports a 4.69 ERA with a 1.50 WHIP and 65:32 K:BB in 15 starts (80.2 innings) this season. Sandoval will look to get back on track in his next outing, currently lined up for next week in San Diego.
Jun 24, 2023
Limits damage Friday
Sandoval gave up three runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out three over five-plus innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Given the traffic on the bases, this could have been a far worse start at Coors Field for Sandoval. It's the second time in his last three outings that he's given up at least 10 hits, but leadoff home run he allowed to Jurickson Profar in the first inning was just the sixth long ball Sandoval's surrendered this year. He continues to effectively limit damage with a 4.16 ERA despite a 1.47 WHIP and 57:30 K:BB over 75.2 innings through 14 starts. The southpaw is projected for a home start versus the White Sox next week.
Jun 17, 2023
Gets back on track Friday
Sandoval (4-6) earned the win over Kansas City on Friday, allowing four hits and four walks while striking out six batters over seven scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval had been going through a rough patch coming into the outing, allowing 11 earned runs over 8.1 innings across his previous two starts. The lackluster Royals offense provided a remedy, as Sandoval allowed just four hits -- all of which were singles -- and snapped a streak of five straight losses. The left-hander still struggled somewhat with his control, tossing only 59 of 102 pitches for a strike and walking four, but the wildness didn't come back to bite him. Sandoval is tentatively lined up to make his next start against the Rockies in Colorado.
Jun 11, 2023
Strikes out eight in loss
Sandoval (3-6) took the loss Saturday versus the Mariners, surrendering five runs on 10 hits while striking out eight and walking none over five innings.
ANALYSIS
This was the third time in 12 starts that he hasn't walked a batter, and the eight strikeouts were a season high, but that's where the good news ends. He's given up 11 runs over his last 8.1 innings, and while struggling in Houston isn't too surprising, Sandoval's work against the Mariners wasn't great. The southpaw now has a 4.52 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 48:25 K:BB through 63.2 innings this season. He's lined up for a favorable road start in Kansas City next week.
Jun 3, 2023
Struggles in short outing
Sandoval (3-5) took the loss against Houston on Saturday, allowing six runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out four batters over 3.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval gave up a run in each of the first and third frames before enduring a rough fourth. He began that inning by striking out Jake Meyers before the Astros tagged him for four straight singles. That resulted in Sandoval getting the hook, and he was charged with three runs after his departure when Jacob Webb surrendered an Alex Bregman grand slam. This was Sandoval's fourth straight loss and his shortest outing of the campaign, while the six runs were the most he has given up in an appearance this season. The southpaw was a popular preseason fantasy sleeper, but he's been inconsistent so far, posting a 4.14 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 40:25 K:BB over 58.2 innings.
May 28, 2023
Bounces back but takes loss
Sandoval (3-4) took the loss Sunday versus the Marlins, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was able to complete six frames for the fifth time in 10 starts, but a lack of run support sent him to his third straight loss. This was his fourth quality start of the season and the second to come in a loss. Sandoval now has a 3.42 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 36:22 K:BB through 55.1 innings. He hasn't struck out more than five batters in any of his last seven appearances. His next start is expected to be a challenging road matchup with the Astros.
May 21, 2023
Short outing Saturday
Sandoval (3-3) allowed three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out three over 4.2 innings, taking the loss versus the Twins on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval has failed to complete five innings in three of his nine starts this season, and each time has been because he's issued too many free passes. This was the first time in his last three outings he'd issued multiple walks. The southpaw has a 3.47 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP and 34:20 K:BB over 49.1 innings this season. Sandoval will look to rein in his control next weekend versus the Marlins.
May 15, 2023
Pitches well in loss
Sandoval (3-2) took the loss Sunday, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk over 7.2 innings in a 4-3 loss against the Guardians. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was sharp Sunday, allowing just an unearned run through his first seven innings before Josh Naylor smacked a go-ahead, three-run homer off Carlos Estevez in the bottom of the eighth, handing Sandoval the loss. Still, the 26-year-old left-hander has gotten off to a solid start in May, going 1-1 with a 3.32 ERA in his last three outings (19 innings). Sandoval now sports a 3.22 ERA with a 1.16 WHIP and 31:16 K:BB through 44.2 innings this season.
May 9, 2023
Yields four runs over 6.1 innings
Sandoval did not factor in the decision against Houston on Monday, allowing four runs on seven hits and no walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out two batters.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval had a rough third inning, allowing four straight two-out hits that resulted in three Houston runs. The southpaw bounced back from there, allowing just one more run and two more hits the rest of the way. Sandoval struck out only two batters -- the third time this season he's fanned that few in a start -- but didn't walk anybody and completed six innings for the third time on the campaign. His 26:15 K:BB across 37 innings isn't very attractive, but he's given up just three homers and has a tolerable 3.41 ERA overall.
May 3, 2023
Picks up second straight win
Sandoval (3-1) got the win over the Cardinals on Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and three walks while striking out four over five innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval retired 13 of the first 14 hitters he faced, but eventually ran into a little trouble in the fifth. The Cardinals singled twice, and Tyler O'Neill wound up crossing the plate on a ground out from Andrew Knizner for their only run of the evening. Outside of an April 20 outing against the Yankees, Sandoval has allowed two or less runs in all of his other starts, although he has only tossed more than five innings twice and his 1.6 K/BB is on track to be the worst of his career. The 26-year-old will carry a 2.93 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 24:15 K:BB into his next projected start against the Astros next week.
Apr 27, 2023
Goes seven frames in win
Sandoval (2-1) earned the win over Oakland on Wednesday, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out five batters.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval allowed a run in each of the first, third and fifth frames, but the Angels' offense exploded for nine runs while he was in the contest to take most of the stress off him. The southpaw struck out a modest five batters but racked up an impressive 18 swings-and-misses while refusing to issue any walks. Sandoval's outing was a nice bounce-back from his previous start, when he gave up a season-worst five runs over four frames against the Yankees.
Apr 21, 2023
Done in by rough first inning
Sandoval (1-1) took the loss against the Yankees on Thursday, allowing five runs on four hits and six walks while striking out five batters over four innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was in trouble from the get-go, allowing the first three batters he faced to reach base. The southpaw ended up being tagged for five runs in the first frame, and the damage was partly due to poor control, as he issued three walks. To Sandoval's credit, he was able to give the Angels three more innings and didn't allow any additional runs despite not having his best stuff, but the first-inning damage proved too much to overcome. Altogether, he issued six free passes, tying a career-high mark and matching the total he had given up in his first three starts combined. This was also Sandoval's first outing this season allowing more than one earned run. As a result, his ERA jumped from 1.23 to 3.38.
Apr 15, 2023
Strikes out six in no-decision
Sandoval did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two unearned runs on three hits and three walks over 3.2 innings in a 5-3 loss against the Red Sox. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval's six strikeouts were a season high, but he couldn't get through the fourth, as his pitch count climbed to 90 after walking his third batter of the game with two outs. Both of the runs on his ledger were unearned due to errors from Luis Rengifo and Anthony Rendon, so his ERA dropped to 1.23 through three starts. Sandoval's next start is tentatively schedule during next week's four-game set versus Oakland.
Apr 8, 2023
No decision despite strong start
Sandoval did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing one run on six hits and one walk over six innings against Toronto. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
It was far from a dominant effort for Sandoval with just the two strikes, but he deserved better than a no-decision Friday. The southpaw's only run allowed came in the fourth on a fielder's choice off the bat of Santiago Espinal. Unfortunately for Sandoval, the Angels were unable to hold the lead with Bo Bichette hitting a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh. In two starts, the 26-year-old has registered a 1.64 ERA with a 4:3 K:BB ratio in 11 innings.
Apr 1, 2023
Breezes to win Saturday
Sandoval (1-0) earned the win over Oakland on Saturday, pitching five innings and allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out two batters.
ANALYSIS
The Angels staked Sandoval to an 11-0 lead with a huge top of the third inning, so the left-hander didn't face much stress in his season debut. The only run against Sandoval came on a Ramon Laureano solo shot in the fifth frame, and the hurler departed after that inning having thrown 86 pitches (56 for a strike). His overall performance wasn't dominant by any means -- he struck out only two batters -- but it was nonetheless a successful debut for Sandoval, who will likely face a tougher challenge his next time out, as he's tentatively scheduled to face off against the Blue Jays.
Mar 28, 2023
Works up to 79 pitches
Sandoval tossed 79 in a minor-league game Sunday, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval spent time this spring pitching for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic, notably holding eventual champions Japan scoreless over 4.1 innings in a semifinal matchup. The southpaw appears to be pretty well ramped up for the regular season, as he followed his 79-pitch outing Sunday by doing some additional throwing in the bullpen. Sandoval is tentatively slated to start the Angels' second game of the campaign, April 1 in Oakland.
Mar 20, 2023
Starting in WBC semifinal
Sandoval will start for Mexico in Monday's WBC semifinal game against Japan, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval will get a big spring test against a loaded Japanese lineup that will include Angels teammate Shohei Ohtani. This will be Sandoval's second start in the WBC -- in his first outing, he allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out two batters in three innings against Team USA, who Mexico will face in the final if able to advance. The southpaw also got into two Cactus League games with the Angels prior to the WBC, allowing one run on three hits and posting a 6:0 K:BB over five frames.
Jan 13, 2023
Settles with Angels
Sandoval and the Angels agreed on a one-year, $2.75 million contract Friday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval and the Angels will avoid the arbitration process after striking a deal Friday. The 26-year-old started 27 games with Los Angeles in 2022, compiling a 2.91 ERA and 1.34 WHIP with 151 strikeouts over 148.2 innings.
Oct 4, 2022
Ends season on high note
Sandoval allowed five hits and one walk with six strikeouts over six scoreless innings in Monday's extra-inning loss versus the Athletics. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
After failing to record a quality start in each of his previous four starts entering Monday, Sandoval turned one of the better starts of the season. He allowed one or fewer walks for just the seventh time and picked up his 11th quality start despite starting 27 times in 2022. He finishes with a 2.91 ERA in 148.2 innings.
Sep 28, 2022
Rough second inning
Sandoval did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against Oakland. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was mostly effective Tuesday but had trouble in the second inning, needing 29 pitches to finish the inning, and allowing all three runs he would surrender on the night to score. He may have been able to record the quality start but was pulled with 94 pitches in favor of a R/R matchup after recording a strikeout to begin the sixth inning. The southpaw has now failed to record a quality start in each of his last four outings after recording three straight prior. He still owns a strong 3.09 ERA on the season and tentatively next faces Oakland again next weekend.
Sep 20, 2022
Strikes out seven in win
Sandoval (6-9) allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out seven over five innings, earning the win Tuesday over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval has been fairly effective lately, as this was his ninth straight start of two or fewer earned runs. The four walks matched his season high, a mark he's reached five times in 25 starts this year. The southpaw is now at a 3.01 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 141:57 K:BB through 137.1 innings. Sandoval is tentatively projected for a favorable home start versus the Athletics next week.
Sep 15, 2022
Solid against Guardians
Sandoval allowed two earned runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out three across 5.1 innings Wednesday against the Guardians. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval induced nine groundball outs and needed only 81 pitches to record his 16 outs. However, he still got the early hook after allowing five hits across his last 1.1 innings. Nevertheless, Sandoval has allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight consecutive starts, during which he's maintained a 1.86 ERA with a 43:14 K:BB across 48.1 frames. For the season, Sandoval maintains a 2.99 ERA with a 134: K:BB in 132.1 innings.
Sep 8, 2022
Takes no-decision Wednesday
Sandoval allowed one run on six hits and one walk over five innings but did not factor in the decision against Detroit on Wednesday. He struck out four batters.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was solid in the outing, giving up only one run on a Spencer Torkelson homer. The lefty hurler did labor somewhat with 87 pitches over five innings, but he was in line for the win until the Tigers staged a ninth-inning comeback. Sandoval has allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his past seven starts, posting a 1.67 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 40:14 K:BB across 43 innings during that stretch.
Sep 1, 2022
Quality versus Yankees
Sandoval (5-9) earned the win Wednesday over the Yankees. He allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out seven over seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval gave up both runs in the fifth inning, but Shohei Ohtani's three-run home run covered the damage in the sixth. This was Sandoval's third straight quality start, which comes after a stretch of five straight starts in which he didn't complete six frames. The southpaw now has a crisp 3.02 ERA on the year, though his 1.34 WHIP and 127:52 K:BB through 122 innings remain somewhat concerning. He's projected for a favorable home start versus the Tigers next week.
Aug 26, 2022
Takes ninth loss
Sandoval (4-9) allowed five runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out five across six innings to take the loss Thursday against the Rays.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval allowed all five runs in the third inning. Only one run was earned, but Sandoval allowed a triple and a home run in the frame so he was still hit hard. Though it comes with the caveat of Thursday's performance, Sandoval has been charged with two or fewer earned runs in five consecutive starts. That has helped him bring his ERA down to 3.05 on the season while also posting a 120:50 K:BB across 115 frames.
Aug 20, 2022
Shuts out opponent
Sandoval (4-8) earned the win against Detroit on Friday, allowing no runs on four hits and while striking out nine and walking none over nine innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was incredibly efficient and accurate in his complete game shutout Friday. He threw 73 of 97 pitches for strikes, limiting Detroit batters to four hits and no walks. The lefty had not lasted six or more innings since July 9. Sandoval earned a quality start in the contest, his seventh of the year. He has earned a quality start in each game this season that he has gone six or more innings. The impressive outing lowered his ERA to 3.14.
Aug 13, 2022
Walk issues persist
Sandoval (3-8) allowed two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out four in five innings, taking the loss Friday versus the Twins.
ANALYSIS
The Angels' offense mustered just seven baserunners, giving Sandoval no run support. He still had his own problems, walking a tied-for-season-high four batters for the second start in a row and the fourth time in 19 outings this year. He also gave up a two-run home run to Gilberto Celestino in the second inning. Sandoval has a decent 3.42 ERA, but his 1.49 WHIP and 106:49 K:BB through 100 innings this year are concerning marks. The lefty has gone 12 straight starts without a win, a streak he'll try to snap in a projected road start in Detroit next week.
Aug 6, 2022
Fires 5.1 scoreless frames
Sandoval registered a no-decision during Friday's 4-3 win against Seattle, allowing three hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 5.1 scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval put multiple runners on in four of his six innings but prevented any Mariner from passing second base and ultimately finished with his first scoreless outing since logging three straight to open the season. Control remains an issue for the 25-year-old as the four free passes tie a season high and he's now walked multiple batters in 11 straight starts. Sandoval carries a 3.41 ERA and 1.47 WHIP into his next start, scheduled for midweek against Minnesota.
Jul 30, 2022
Decent in loss
Sandoval (3-7) took the loss Friday versus the Rangers. He allowed two runs on four hits, two walks and a hit batter with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval will be glad to put July in the past, as he went 0-5 with 17 runs allowed in 24.2 innings this month, though he did add 32 strikeouts. Both runs against him Friday came in the sixth inning. The southpaw's slump has him at a 3.61 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 97:41 K:BB in 89.2 innings through 17 starts overall. Sandoval will look to get back on track in August, beginning with a projected road start versus the Mariners.

Goes three frames in loss
Sandoval (3-6) took the loss during Saturday's 7-2 defeat to Atlanta, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts in three innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval surrendered two runs on three hits in the first inning and another three runs on five baserunners in the third, tying his shortest outing of the campaign and posting a season worst 25 game score. The 25-year-old has now gone winless in his last nine starts -- his last victory came on May 22 -- with Los Angeles losing eight of the contests. Sandoval carries a 3.43 ERA and 1.50 WHIP into his next start, scheduled for next weekend against Texas.
Jul 16, 2022
No help in Friday's loss
Sandoval (3-5) allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings, taking the loss versus the Dodgers on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval wasn't all that sharp in the contest, but that likely didn't make much of a difference Friday. Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw took a perfect game through seven innings, giving the Angels' offense nothing to work with, which left Sandoval had no support in his third consecutive loss. The 25-year-old southpaw now has a 3.00 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 87:37 K:BB through 81 innings in 15 starts overall. He's given up 10 runs (eight earned) in 16 innings in July.
Jul 10, 2022
Strikes out ten batters in loss
Sandoval (3-4) took the loss against the Orioles on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits while striking out ten and walking two over 6.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval did everything he could to keep the Angels in the game, but his offense gave him no support and he took the loss Saturday. He did earn a quality start, his seventh of the year. The lefty threw 61 of 95 pitches for strikes in the game. This comes one game after allowing five runs in five innings, so it appears that Sandoval is back on track. He will take a 2.95 ERA into his next outing.

Fans nine but takes loss
Sandoval (3-3) took the loss against Houston on Saturday, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out nine batters.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval had his swing-and-miss stuff working in the contest, as he racked up 18 whiffs and tied a season high with nine strikeouts. However, Houston got to him for five runs in the first two innings, creating a deficit that the Los Angeles offense couldn't overcome. To Sandoval's credit, he hung around for five frames and allowed only two hits over his final three innings, but the early damage resulted in his third loss of the campaign. This was the second time that the left-hander has allowed five runs in a game this season, but he's been good overall with a 3.09 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 74 strikeouts over 70 innings. His biggest issue has been walks -- his 4.1 BB/9 ranks in the bottom 10 percent among pitchers who have tossed at least 50 innings.
Jun 26, 2022
Limits damage in no-decision
Sandoval allowed a run on eight hits and two walks with six strikeouts in five innings, taking a no-decision versus the Mariners on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval let the second batter of the game, Julio Rodriguez, hit a solo home run, and that accounted for all of the damage on the southpaw's line. The 25-year-old was able to pitch around the other nine baserunners, throwing 62 of 95 pitches for strikes in a solid outing. Sandoval's submitted four straight starts where he's allowed two or fewer runs, lowering his season ERA to 2.63. He's added a 1.37 WHIP and 65:30 K:BB across 65 innings in 12 starts. He's projected for a tougher road start versus the Astros next weekend.
Jun 19, 2022
Takes no-decision in matinee
Sandoval allowed a run on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings, taking a no-decision in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader versus the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval limited the damage to a Dylan Moore solo home run in the third inning, but Archie Bradley couldn't maintain the lead in the seventh. While Sandoval was denied the win for a fourth straight start, he's shown consistent improvement since a dud May 29 versus the Blue Jays. He's allowed five runs and 16 hits in 16.2 innings across his last three starts. The southpaw has a 2.70 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 59:28 K:BB in 60 innings across 11 outings, and he's projected to make his next start in a home rematch with the Mariners next weekend.
Jun 13, 2022
Whiffs eight in loss
Sandoval (3-2) took the loss during Sunday's 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Mets, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in six innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval put a season-high 10 runners on Sunday but was able to strand a majority of them, though it wasn't enough as Los Angeles only put up one run of support. The eight strikeouts are one off the 25-year-old's season high as Sandoval recorded an impressive 20 swinging strikes on 87 pitches. Despite a recent rough patch, Sandoval still owns a 2.83 ERA and 1.35 WHIP with 54 strikeouts in 54 innings across 10 starts. He lines up to face Seattle next weekend.
Jun 6, 2022
Struggles with command
Sandoval allowed two runs on four hits and four walks over 4.2 innings in Sunday's loss to the Phillies. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval escaped two separate bases-loaded threats through four scoreless frames but his luck finally ran out in the fifth. He coughed up a pair of runs before leaving the game during that inning. His four walks tied a season high and he now owns a 46:24 K:BB alongside a 2.81 ERA through nine starts. Sandoval is lined up to face the Mets at home next week.
May 29, 2022
Rough outing Sunday
Sandoval allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts in three innings in a no-decision versus the Blue Jays on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Neither Sandoval nor Blue Jays starter Jose Berrios pitched past the third inning in this contest. Sandoval allowed a two-run double to Lourdes Gurriel in the second inning and then yielded four more runs in the third before turning the ball over the to bullpen. This was the southpaw's worst start of the year, but he can be given a pass -- he still has a solid 2.70 ERA despite a 1.27 WHIP and 42:20 K:BB through 43.1 innings in his eight appearances. He'll try to shake off this bad outing next weekend in Philadelphia.
May 22, 2022
Excellent in win
Sandoval (3-1) earned the win, striking out seven in 7.1 innings and allowing one run on four hits and a walk in a 4-1 victory Sunday over Oakland.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval cruised through the first seven innings, scattering two singles and needing just 82 pitches to complete the frames. In the eighth, however, he allowed a run on two hits and a walk before being removed after retiring one batter. The 25-year-old is off to a phenomenal start with a 1.79 through 40.1 innings. The one knock against him in his first six outings was a less-than-stellar 31-16 K:BB but that rate was improved as he only issued a free pass to one batter Sunday. His next start will likely be next weekend against Toronto.
May 15, 2022
Gets back in win column
Sandoval (2-1) earned the win during Sunday's 4-1 victory over Oakland, allowing one run on four hits and four walks with four strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was spotted a two-run lead before he took the mound and cruised for the most part after escaping a bases-loaded jam in the first inning. The 25-year-old got back on track following two decent outings though he's now walked at least three batters in three straight outings. A 3.76 xFIP compared to a 1.91 ERA indicates Sandoval has overperformed -- the main culprit being a high 10.7 percent walk rate -- though he's proven to be Los Angeles' best full-time starter and should continue to produce, especially with a rematch against Oakland on tap for next weekend.
May 8, 2022
Mediocre in no-decision
Sandoval allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks in 5.2 innings in a 5-4 win Sunday over Washington. He struck out five and did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval pitched fairly well through the first five innings, allowing just one run and pitching around trouble. In the sixth, he allowed three singles and a sacrifice fly before being removed. The lefty has a 1.28 WHIP on the season, identical to his career rate. However, his 2.03 ERA is about half of his career 4.08 ERA, suggesting he may be the beneficiary of some good luck in the first month of the season.
May 2, 2022
Quality start, picks up loss
Sandoval (1-1) got the loss Monday after pitching six innings, giving up three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two versus the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval surrender his first earned runs of the season Monday, ending his scoreless outing streak at three. The White Sox scratched across two runs in the first inning and then Adam Engel doubled in Jose Abreu in the sixth, accounting for the final run on Sandoval's line. The 25-year-old now sports a 1.29 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 22 punchouts over 21 innings this season. Sandoval tentatively lines up to face the Nationals on Sunday.
Apr 27, 2022
Fans nine in win
Sandoval (1-0) registered the win during Tuesday's 4-1 victory over Cleveland, allowing two hits and a walk with nine strikeouts in seven scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval brought his best stuff Tuesday, limiting Cleveland to three baserunners and retiring 12 straight at one point. The 25-year-old fired 59 of 90 pitches for strikes and is yet to surrender a run during 15 innings across three starts, all Halos wins. He's currently slated to pitch on Monday against the White Sox for and encore.
Apr 20, 2022
Inefficient in four innings
Sandoval struck out five in four innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits and two walks in a 7-2 win Tuesday in Houston. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval got through the first two innings on just 26 pitches but needed 59 pitches to get through the next two frames. Despite his inefficiency, the lefty managed to pitch out of trouble and left the game with a 7-1 lead. In both of his starts this season he has pitched four innings and allowed one unearned run. With the Angels currently using six starters, his next scheduled start is Monday against Cleveland.
Apr 13, 2022
Fans six in no-decision
Sandoval didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Marlins, allowing one unearned run over four innings on three hits and three walks. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The first outing of the season was a mixed bag for Sandoval, as the southpaw tossed only 40 of 71 pitches for strikes and after striking out the side in the first inning, he had trouble keeping the bases clear. Sandoval faces a tougher test in his next scheduled start Tuesday, on the road in Houston.
Apr 7, 2022
Won't start opening series
Sandoval is having his first start of the season pushed back to Tuesday against the Marlins, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was originally slated to start Friday against the Astros, though he's flipping spots in the rotation with Reid Detmers. Sandoval's 2021 campaign ended prematurely due to a back injury, though he claims that his decision is not related. Instead, he needs more time to stretch out prior to his initial start of the regular season. Assuming Sandoval is healthy enough to take his newly scheduled turn through the rotation, he could benefit with a better matchup against Miami as opposed to Houston.
Mar 16, 2022
Back injury fully healed
Sandoval said Tuesday that his back issue was fully healed by mid-December and that he had a normal offseason, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was shut down in mid-August last season due to a left lumbar spine stress reaction, but that issue now appears to be a thing of the past. The southpaw mentioned "doing a lot of mobility and soft tissue" work in the offseason to increase mobility in his hips, suggesting that he identified the issue that led to the back injury. Sandoval figures to slot into the middle of the Angels' rotation in 2022 following a breakout 2021 campaign.
Sep 1, 2021
Shifts to 60-day IL
Sandoval (back) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was ruled out for the rest of the season last week, so it was only a matter of time before he was moved to the 60-day IL to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. The left-hander took a step forward in 2021 and finished the campaign with a 3.62 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 94:36 K:BB across 87 innings.
Aug 27, 2021
Out for season
Sandoval (back) will miss the remainder of the season, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval landed on the 10-day injured list in mid-August due to a left lumbar stress reaction, and general manager Perry Minasian confirmed Friday that the southpaw will miss the remainder of the season. The 24-year-old put together a career-best season in 2021 with a 3.62 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 87 innings across 17 appearances (14 starts).
Aug 18, 2021
Goes on IL with back injury
Sandoval was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a left lumbar spine stress reaction, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval struggled against the Astros on Friday, allowing four runs in 4.2 innings, his shortest start since May 17. Manager Joe Maddon said the injury has the potential to be season-ending, but the length of Sandoval's absence isn't clear at this time. It's unclear if the Angels will add another starter to their rotation, or if they'll manage a five-man mix going forward.
Aug 14, 2021
Done in by poor inning
Sandoval (3-6) took the loss against Houston on Friday, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw cruised through the first three innings, keeping Houston off the scoreboard while allowing only one hit. Things turned for the worse in the fourth frame, however, when Sandoval allowed the first three batters to reach base -- two via walk -- before serving up a Kyle Tucker grand slam. The outing was Sandoval's first since July 18 in which he gave up more than two runs, and it was also the first time he allowed a long ball since that same July 18 appearance. He lines up to make his next start at Detroit next week.
Aug 7, 2021
Navigates through five frames
Sandoval didn't factor in the decision against the Dodgers on Friday. He completed five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander wasn't exactly sharp in the start -- he needed 96 pitches, 40 of which were balls, to get through five frames -- but he worked around seven hits and two walks to limit the Dodgers to two runs. Sandoval continues to function as a reliable arm out of the Angels rotation, as he has worked at least five innings in 12 straight outings dating back to May 22 and has registered a 3.04 ERA along with a 1.13 WHIP over that stretch. His next start is tentatively scheduled to come at home versus Houston next Friday.
Jul 31, 2021
Wild in loss
Sandoval (3-5) took the loss against Oakland on Friday, allowing one run on four hits and six walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Considering the left-hander's wildness -- Sandoval's six walks were a season high -- he was fortunate to emerge from his outing having allowed only one run. He did a good job of limiting the damage against him by surrendering no extra-base hits and keeping Athletics hitters on their toes with 20 swinging strikes. Sandoval threw a season-high 115 pitches in the outing, and he continues to justify his spot in the Angels rotation. He'll carry a 3.38 ERA into his next start, which is tentatively lined up to take place at Texas next Thursday.
Jul 24, 2021
Tosses one-hit gem
Sandoval (3-4) came within inches of a no-hitter Saturday night, allowing one earned run on one hit and and one walk with 13 strikeouts over 8.2 innings in a 2-1 win over the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval took a no-hitter into the ninth and recorded the first out of the inning before Brent Rooker preserved the Twins' dignity with a double. Sandoval got one more out before Joe Maddon denied him the opportunity to go for a complete game. The only run charged to the Californian came when Rooker scored on a Josh Donaldson double yielded by Raisel Iglesias. Although Sandoval may not have made history, this was still an incredible pitching performance by the left-hander. After striking out just nine batters in his first three starts this season, the 24-year-old has struck out 28 in his last three trips to the bump, including a career-high 13 on Saturday night.
Jul 18, 2021
Takes loss despite nine strikeouts
Sandoval (2-4) took the loss Sunday against Seattle, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk with nine strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old went seven innings and threw 114 pitches, both career highs, but was undone by a pair of home runs, including a three-run shot by Ty France in the fifth inning that broke the game open. Sandoval has flashed dominant stuff in 2021 and has fanned 51 hitters over his last seven starts dating back to the start of June. He owns a 3.86 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with a 68:25 K:BB in in 63 innings overall this season.
Jul 11, 2021
Outdone in pitcher's duel
Sandoval (2-3) took the loss against Seattle on Saturday despite allowing two runs on six hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
The bad news is that Sandoval took the loss despite the strong effort. The good news is that he continues to shine as a starter, logging a season-high seven innings and 114 pitches in the contest. The southpaw has allowed three or fewer runs while pitching at least five innings in each of his past eight outings dating back to May 22. Over that span, he has posted a 3.22 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 49:18 K:BB across 44.2 frames. Those numbers make him a viable fantasy asset in nearly all formats.
Jul 5, 2021
Surrenders two runs Sunday
Sandoval allowed two runs on two hits and five walks while striking out seven over five innings Sunday against the Orioles. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was lucky to surrender only two runs after walking a season-high five batters Sunday. Three of his walks came in the first inning but he was able to strike out DJ Stewart to get out of trouble. Both runs against him came in the sixth inning. Austin Hays led off with a single and then Sandoval walked Trey Mancini which put an end to his day. Both runners would end up scoring off the bat of Luis Urias as part of a four-run inning for the Orioles. The 24-year-old owns a 3.86 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 53:22 K:BB over 49 innings and lines up for a start in Seattle next weekend.
Jun 27, 2021
Coughs up three runs
Sandoval allowed three runs on four hits and two walks over five innings in Sunday's win over the Rays. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval cruised through four innings without allowing a hit before Brandon Lowe knocked a solo homer off him in the fifth. He was then charged with two runs in the sixth after Mike Mayers gave up a three-run shot to Ji-Man Choi. After totaling just 11.1 innings through his first four outings, the 6-foot-3 southpaw has gone at least five innings in each of his last six appearances. He's sporting a 3.89 ERA and a 46:17 K:BB through 44 innings. Sandoval is projected to face Baltimore at home next week.
Jun 20, 2021
Strikes out nine in win
Sandoval (2-2) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine in 5.2 innings. He earned the win Saturday versus Detroit.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval got into a bit of trouble in the sixth inning, and southpaw was pulled with two outs in the frame as Detroit had a sequence of four right-handed hitters due up. He has yet to allow more than two earned runs in a start this season. The southpaw has a 3.69 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 40:15 K:BB across 39 innings. He's now started his last six appearances -- it appears Sandoval has solidified a spot in the rotation. He projects to face Tampa Bay next weekend.
Jun 14, 2021
Tosses quality start in win
Sandoval (1-2) got the win over the Diamondbacks on Sunday after allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval put together his second straight quality start and actually picked up the win as opposed to his last time out. He allowed the Diamondbacks to get on the board in the fourth on an RBI single by Pavin Smith and then was eventually pulled after walking two batters to begin the seventh, one of which would come around to score for his second earned run of the day. His changeup was super effective, as he generated 10 of his 13 whiffs with the offspeed pitch. The 24-year-old now owns a 3.51 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 31:13 K:BB over 33.1 innings and has a another favorable matchup coming up this week against the Tigers.
Jun 7, 2021
Takes loss despite quality start
Sandoval (0-2) allowed three earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out 10 across six innings, taking the loss Sunday to the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval surrendered a home run by Donovan Walton to lead off the third inning. Prior to his ten strikeout performance, Sandoval only totaled four punchouts twice. The 24-year-old has a 3.95 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP with 27 strikeouts in 27.1 innings. He has posted a quality start in his last three outings. The Angels have rocked a six-man rotation at times and Sandoval has been in and out of the rotation.
Jun 5, 2021
Confirmed as Sunday starter
Sandoval is listed as the Angels' starting pitcher for Sunday's game against the Mariners, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
All signs were pointing towards Sandoval taking the ball Sunday, with manager Joe Maddon announcing earlier in the week that he would replace Jose Quintana (shoulder) in the rotation for the time being. Now he's officially slated to take the hill for the series finale. The southpaw has made six major-league appearances (three starts) this season, posting a 3.80 ERA to go along with a 17:10 K:BB across 21.1 innings.
May 31, 2021
Joining rotation
Manager Joe Maddon said Sandoval would join the Angels rotation after Jose Quintana (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval has previously made three starts for Los Angeles this season, including one last Thursday against Oakland. The young southpaw turned in the best outings of his young career versus the Athletics, tossing five shutout innings while allowing seven baserunners and striking out four. The Angels haven't outlined their full pitching schedule for the upcoming week, but Sandoval will presumably make his next start during the Angels' four-game series versus Seattle over the weekend.
May 28, 2021
Throws five shutout innings
Sandoval allowed five hits and two walks with four strikeouts over five shutout innings in Thursday's loss to Oakland. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was called upon for a spot start after Shohei Ohtani experienced transportation issues that would have affected his usual game-day routine. The 24-year-old Sandoval performed excellently on short notice, but Oakland's Chris Bassitt was better with a two-hit shutout Thursday. Through six games (three starts), Sandoval has a 3.80 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, and 17:10 K:BB across 21.1 innings. He'll likely fill a multi-inning relief role going forward.
May 27, 2021
New Thursday starter
Sandoval will replace Shohei Ohtani as the starting pitcher for Thursday's game against the Athletics, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Registerreports.
ANALYSIS
Ohtani was scratched from the start a little over an hour before the game was set to begin. The decision is reportedly not injury related, so this may turn out to be only a spot start for Sandoval. Through 16.1 innings this season, he has posted a 4.96 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with a 13:8 K:BB.
May 23, 2021
Allows two runs in five innings
Sandoval (0-1) went five innings in Saturday's 6-2 loss to Oakland, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Both of Sandoval's runs allowed came at the expense of Mark Canha, but otherwise the righty performed admirably. The five innings was his longest outing of the season and he's allowed two runs or less in four of five outings although a 4.96 ERA shows there's room for growth.
May 22, 2021
Starting vs. Oakland
Sandoval is starting Saturday's game against the Athletics.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old southpaw is a starter by trade, but he has also worked out of the bullpen at times for the Angels over the last three seasons. Through 63.2 career innings as a big-league starter, Sandoval has a 5.80 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and a 54:29 K:BB - his 4.18 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 23.2 innings as a reliever are more promising. The Angels have been working with a six-man rotation all season, and Sandoval represents a seventh starting option, so it is unclear if this outing will just buy everyone else some extra rest or if he has a shot at displacing someone else in the rotation.
May 18, 2021
Goes four inning in no-decision
Sandoval allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over four innings in Monday's win over Cleveland. He struck out two and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval got off to a rough start, serving up a solo homer to Cesar Hernandez on the first pitch of the game. He later coughed up an RBI single to Jose Ramirez in the third. The 6-foot-3 southpaw is sporting a 5.56 ERA across 11.1 frames this season. Sandoval could move back to the bullpen before he gets another chance at starting.
May 16, 2021
Named Monday's starter
Sandoval will start for the Angels against Cleveland on Monday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw will take the ball as a starter for the first time in 2021 with Alex Cobb still battling a blister issue. Andrew Heaney and Shohei Ohtani will follow Sandoval on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Sandoval's longest outing in the majors this year is 3.1 innings, so it's a long shot to think he could factor into the decision Monday, although it's not completely out of the question.
May 8, 2021
Earns unconventional save
Sandoval pitched the final 3.1 innings of the game to earn the save, allowing one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out three in the win over the Dodgers on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval picked up the unusual three-inning save in the blowout win over the Dodgers. It's his first save of the season as he doesn't pitch in normal save situations. His only run allowed came on a ninth-inning home run by Mookie Betts. The 24-year-old has eaten multiple innings in two appearances since getting called up on May 3.
May 3, 2021
Promoted to big leagues
Sandoval was recalled Monday.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval will take the roster spot of Mike Mayers, who was placed on the injured list Monday for an unspecified reason. Sandoval has yet to see any big-league action this season after failing to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster.
Apr 1, 2021
Fails to crack Opening Day roster
Sandoval was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake by the Angels on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old was competing for a bullpen spot but was unable to show enough during spring training to earn the role. Sandoval had a 5.65 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 33:12 K:BB over 36.2 innings last season for the Angels.
Mar 20, 2021
In running for bullpen role
Sandoval is among a group of pitchers vying for a spot on the Opening Day roster in a relief role, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The Angels are dealing with a number of injury concerns in the bullpen, potentially opening the door for Sandoval -- or another pitcher currently on the roster bubble -- to secure a spot on the Opening Day roster. Sandoval has been used as a starter in 15 of his 19 big-league appearances, but with the team's starting rotation essentially set, his best path to major-league innings early in the campaign is likely out of the bullpen. Sandoval has struggled with his control this spring, yielding eight walks in 10 innings, but he has also struck out 13 and given up only five hits.
Mar 11, 2021
Role unclear
Sandoval is being stretched out as a starter during spring training, but he is also being considered for a big-league bullpen role, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval has looked superb in Cactus League play thus far, throwing six scoreless innings and racking up nine strikeouts. However, there may not be room in the rotation for the left-hander, even with manager Joe Maddon committed to a six-man starting staff. Should Sandoval break camp with the club, he could function as a multiple-inning relief option with the ability to step into the rotation if the need arises. He could also start off the campaign logging innings in the minors, though Sandoval seems to be reducing the likelihood of that scenario with his strong start this spring.
Sep 27, 2020
Suffers left calf strain
Sandoval suffered a left calf strain during Sunday's start against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval only lasted 2.2 innings during his final start of the regular season Sunday before he was removed with his injury. Barring any setbacks, the injury is unlikely to impact the southpaw's availability for spring training.
Sep 27, 2020
Leaves with apparent injury
Sandoval exited Sunday's start against the Dodgers with an apparent right leg injury, Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander appeared to hurt his right leg during the third inning and was removed while in line for the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on one hit with three strikeouts and three walks over 2.2 innings. Barring a serious injury, Sandoval should have plenty of time to recover before spring training.
Sep 27, 2020
Sunday's probable starter
Sandoval is listed as the Angels' probable starter Sunday against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander has been working in long relief since returning from the alternate training site in mid-September, but it appears he'll take the mound for the final game of the season. Sandoval has a 3.18 ERA since rejoining the team and topped out at 62 pitches during that stretch, and he's likely to have a similar workload Sunday.

Whiffs seven in relief
Sandoval tossed 4.1 innings against Texas on Sunday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out seven.
ANALYSIS
Starter Julio Teheran was lifted before recording an out in the second inning, leaving the Angels bullpen to navigate through the remainder of the contest. Sandoval assumed the largest load, throwing 62 pitches and striking out a season-high seven batters. He did yield a long ball -- as he has in each of his seven appearances this season -- but the solo shot accounted for the only run the Rangers could muster against him. Sandoval is settling into a long-relief role for the Halos after struggling as a starter earlier in the campaign.

Hit hard in return
Sandoval allowed three runs on four hits in relief against Arizona on Wednesday. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval's first appearance since Aug. 24 began well as the southpaw retired his first eight batters and kept the Diamondbacks off the scoreboard for three innings. However, Arizona got to Sandoval for a pair of homers in the seventh frame to account for all three runs scored against him. The 23-year-old began the season in the starting rotation but figures to fill a long-relief role moving forward.

Rejoins big-league club
Sandoval was recalled from the alternate training site Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old will rejoin the Halos for additional bullpen depth after spending the past couple weeks at the alternate site. Sandoval started in his first five outings of the season and had a 6.75 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 15:8 K:BB over 22.2 innings.
Aug 28, 2020
Optioned to alternate camp
Sandoval was optioned to the Angels' alternate training site Friday.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval's results have declined over his past three starts, and he'll work to right the ship at the team's alternate camp. Given the Angels' lack of major-league rotation depth this season, the southpaw could return to the active roster prior to the end of the 2020 campaign. Left-hander Jose Quijada was recalled from alternate camp in a corresponding move, but it's unclear who could take Sandoval's place in the starting rotation.

Struggles versus Astros
Sandoval (0-4) gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks over 2.2 innings in a loss to the Astros on Monday. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval allowed a pair of runs in the second inning, and then got into a jam in the third inning that allowed the Astros to score three more times. His 2.2 innings pitched was his shortest start of the year. He now has a 6.75 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 15 strikeouts across 22.2 innings this season. Sandoval lines up to face the Mariners on Saturday in his next start.
Aug 20, 2020
Gives up two homers in loss
Sandoval (0-3) was tagged with the loss Wednesday against the Giants. He gave up five runs on six hits -- including two home runs -- and two walks while fanning one across four innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval allowed homers to Wilmer Flores in the third inning and Austin Slater in the fourth, essentially putting the game out of reach for the Angels. The 23-year-old lefty has struggled in his first full season as a starter, posting a 5.40 ERA in 20 innings across four starts. His next scheduled start is set for Aug. 24 in a tough road matchup against the Astros.
Aug 15, 2020
Takes loss against Dodgers
Sandoval (0-2) was tagged with the loss Friday against the Dodgers. He allowed five runs (four earned) in six hits and two walks while fanning five across six innings.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was coming off two decent appearances, but he was unable to tame the Dodgers lineup in this one and, as such, he dropped his second consecutive start. Sandoval has given up seven earned runs in 16 innings across his first three starts, and he will aim to bounce back in his next start, set for Aug. 19 on the road against the Giants.
Aug 14, 2020
Gets nod in Freeway Series opener
Sandoval is slated to start Friday's home game against the Dodgers.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was called up from the Angels' alternate site last weekend and turned in a strong start against the Rangers, working six innings and giving up two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four. The outing was enough for manager Joe Maddon to give Sandoval a second turn through the rotation, with the Angels moving Matt Andriese to the bullpen to open up the fifth starter's spot for the young lefty.
Aug 9, 2020
Quality start in return
Sandoval (0-1) took the loss Saturday, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk over six innings as the Angels fell 2-0 to the Rangers. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw really only made one mistake in his return to the rotation, but mistakes to Joey Gallo tend to wind up in the seats, and this one was no exception. Sandoval threw 94 pitches (58 strikes) in the quality start, and he should be able to avoid another trip back to the Angels' alternate training site after this performance. He'll hope for some more run support in his next outing, a home tilt against the Dodgers on Friday.
Aug 8, 2020
Joins major-league roster
Sandoval was recalled by the Angels ahead of his scheduled start Saturday, Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval has stayed stretched out at the team's alternate training site over the past week, and he'll rejoin the major-league club to make his second start of the season Saturday against the Rangers. Reliever Luke Bard was optioned to alternate camp to make room for Sandoval. The southpaw allowed two runs (one earned) while striking out four over four innings in his first start this year.

Named starter for Saturday
Sandoval will start Saturday's game against the Rangers, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was rumored to be a candidate to start Saturday, but manager Joe Maddon confirmed the decision Friday. The 23-year-old made one start for the Angels this season before being sent back down to the alternate training site. In that appearance, he allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out four over four innings.
Aug 6, 2020
Could start Saturday
Sandoval is a candidate to start Saturday against the Rangers, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
The Angels have yet to announce a starter for Saturday's game, but it sounds like Sandoval could get the nod. The lefty looked solid in his lone big-league appearance before moving to the team's alternate camp site, allowing one earned run on four hits and a walk while striking out four batters in four innings.
Jul 29, 2020
Sent to alternate site
Sandoval was optioned to the Angels' alternate training site Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
This move comes after Sandoval fired four innings during Tuesday's game against the Mariners, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out four. He'll likely remain stretched out at the team's satellite camp until a starter or long reliever is needed. Luke Bard was summoned to the big club in a corresponding move.
Jul 29, 2020
Four innings in season debut
Sandoval was charged with two runs (one earned) on four hits over four innings in a no-decision against the Mariners on Tuesday. He struck out four and issued one walk.
ANALYSIS
The lefty was listed as the Angels' sixth starter to begin the year, but he ended up starting the team's fifth game after Matt Andriese was needed for extensive work behind Shohei Ohtani on Sunday. Sandoval held up his end of the bargain, but he was limited to just 62 pitches and did not make it deep enough into the game to qualify for the win. It's uncertain whether Sandoval will continue to start once Julio Teheran is ready to return from the COVID-19 IL.
Jul 23, 2020
Looks like sixth starter
The Angels list Sandoval as their sixth starter on the season-opening 30-man roster.
ANALYSIS
Meanwhile, Sandoval's top competition for the final rotation spot, Felix Pena, is listed as a member of the bullpen, effectively confirming that the former will break camp with a starting role. Sandoval's positive COVID-19 test result in late June delayed his arrival at summer camp, but the lefty was able to make up enough ground in the job battle and wrapped up the Angels' exhibition slate by working three innings (51 pitches) and giving up five runs in a loss to the Padres. Look for Sandoval to be limited to around 75 pitches in his first turn of the regular season, which is expected to come July 29 at home versus the Mariners.

May crack starting rotation
Manager Joe Maddon said Wednesday that Sandoval (illness) has a "good shot" of opening the season in the six-man rotation, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander started Wednesday's exhibition game against the Friars and got tagged for five runs on six hits over three frames, but Maddon has apparently liked what he's seen in summer training. Sandoval was late to camp after testing positive for COVID-19, but the delayed start doesn't appear to have significantly impacted his path to a rotation spot. The 23-year-old made his big-league debut in 2019 and had a 5.03 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 10 outings.
Jul 21, 2020
Not ruled out for Opening Day
Manager Joe Maddon said Tuesday that Sandoval (illness) could be ready for Friday's season opener at Oakland, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Maddon said last week it would be "hard to imagine" the 23-year-old being ready for Opening Day, but he's apparently been progressing well in his buildup. Sandoval missed the start of summer training after testing positive for COVID-19, so he's been behind the other pitchers as he competes for a spot in the six-man rotation. The left-hander's status should receive another update later in the week.
Jul 13, 2020
Unlikely for Opening Day
Manager Joe Maddon said Monday that it would be "hard to imagine" that Sandoval (illness) would be ready for Opening Day, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval was late to camp after testing positive for COVID-19, but he's since been able to begin throwing. Despite his presence with the team, he's slightly behind the other players and could need some extra time to build up strength. Maddon said Monday that the team would prefer to allow him to recover in a controlled environment rather than pitching out of the bullpen in game situations, so he could be held out of the start of the regular season.
Jul 13, 2020
Reveals past positive test
Sandoval revealed Monday that he tested positive for COVID-19 back on June 22, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The positive test explains why Sandoval was unable to report to camp until Thursday. Battling the virus has left him behind the rest of his teammates, so his workload will likely be limited early in the year.
Jul 12, 2020
Throws bullpen session
Sandoval threw a bullpen session Sunday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
He is a little behind the rest of his teammates as he was late reporting to camp for undisclosed reasons, but it's good to at least know he is throwing and ramping up. Sandoval seems likely to open the year in a six-man rotation, although he may not be stretched out enough to have an unrestricted workload in his first start of the season.
Jul 11, 2020
Behind teammates
Sandoval will need some time to catch up to his teammates, as he was unable to report to camp until Thursday due to undisclosed reasons, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval is a candidate to be part of the Angels' six-man rotation this season, but with Opening Day less than two weeks away, it's possible he won't be able to handle a starters' workload for the first few weeks of the campaign. If he does eventually make some starts this season, he'll be at least a moderately interesting option, as his 5.03 ERA in 39.1 innings as a 22-year-old rookie last season came with a decent 4.02 xFIP. His strikeout rate (24.9 percent) and groundball rate (46.6 percent) were both slightly better than league average.
Jul 9, 2020
Officially reports to camp
Manager Joe Maddon said Sandoval reported to camp Thursday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval has officially joined the Angels for workouts after missing the start of summer camp for undisclosed reasons. The southpaw, who posted a 5.03 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 42:10 K:BB over 39.1 innings as a rookie last season, is a candidate to serve as the team's sixth starter during the shortened 2020 season.
Jul 7, 2020
Not yet with team
Sandoval has yet to report to the Angels' camp for undisclosed reasons, Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Manager Joe Maddon revealed Sandoval as one of three Angels who have yet to report to camp as of Tuesday, but he was unable to provide a reason behind their absence. It's unclear when Sandoval will rejoin the team or whether his absence will affect his availability for the start of the regular season. The southpaw is a candidate to serve as a No. 6 starter for Los Angeles during the abbreviated 2020 campaign.

May benefit from six-man rotation
Sandoval is a candidate to remain a starter as manager Joe Maddon said he plans to utilize a six-man rotation this season, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old appeared set to begin 2020 in the starting rotation with Shohei Ohtani (elbow) and Griffin Canning (elbow) unavailable to pitch in the spring, but both pitchers should be ready for the delayed Opening Day next month, However, since Ohtani will remain on a once-per-week pitching schedule, Sandoval should still have a chance to retain a spot in Maddon's six-man rotation. Sandoval made his big-league debut in 2019 and posted a 5.03 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 42:10 K:BB over 39.1 innings (10 appearances).
Mar 27, 2020
In contention for rotation spot
Sandoval is among a number of pitchers vying for a spot at the back end of the Angels' rotation, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval appeared to boost his chance of breaking camp with the Angels after a solid spring in which he posted a 3.60 ERA and 5:3 K:BB across five innings. However, the delay to the start of the regular season could mean less available rotation spots as both Shohei Ohtani (elbow) and Griffin Canning (elbow) could feasibly return to health in time for Opening Day. Sandoval's likelihood of making the big-league squad is also compromised by the fact that he still has minor-league options remaining.

Recovers from illness
Sandoval missed the "first few days" of training camp due to an illness, but he was able to throw a bullpen session Sunday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sandoval's illness appears to be behind him as he reportedly no longer feels sick. The southpaw could compete for the fifth spot in the Angels' rotation, though the most likely scenario is that he starts the season in Triple-A.
