ANALYSIS
Maton is expected to make only one appearance with Sugar Land before returning to the Astros' bullpen Sunday or Monday. The 30-year-old right-hander was sporting a 3.04 ERA and 58:21 K:BB through 53.1 innings of work when he landed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 12 with a bruised elbow.

Aiming for Sunday or Monday return
Maton (elbow) threw a bullpen session at Minute Maid Park on Wednesday and could begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Maton has now thrown two bullpen sessions over the last three days and has responded well to both of them, so he looks like he'll be ready to test himself in a game setting. The right-hander said he expects to require only rehab appearance prior to being activated from the 15-day injured list. If all goes well during his time at Sugar Land, Maton could be reinstated as soon as Sunday or Monday.

Could return next weekend
Maton (elbow) could return from the injured list Sunday when first eligible, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Maton threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Monday without issue, and he is set to throw another Wednesday. If all goes well it appears he will be ready to return to action after missing only the 15 days required by his placement on the injured list.

Throws off mound
Maton (elbow) threw off a mound Saturday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Maton has been out for a week after taking a comebacker off his right elbow. He avoided structural damage and is already ramping up again, however, so he doesn't appear to be set for a long absence. He's eligible to return Aug. 27.
Aug 13, 2023
No structural damage in elbow
Maton said Sunday that extra tests revealed no structural damage in his right elbow, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Maton landed on the injured list Saturday after taking a comebacker off his elbow during Friday's game against the Angels. The plan is for him to resume throwing during Houston's upcoming series in Miami and potentially return to the bullpen after a minimum 15-day stay on the IL, putting his return date at Aug. 27.
Aug 12, 2023
Placed on injured list
Maton (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Maton was struck on the right elbow by a comebacker during his outing against the Angels on Friday. He's avoided anything worse than a bruise but will nonetheless require at least 15 days to heal. Parker Mushinski was called up to take his place on the roster.
Aug 11, 2023
Exits after being hit by comebacker
Maton was removed from Friday's appearance versus the Angels after being hit by a comebacker in the right elbow, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
He was facing his first batter in the top of the ninth when Eduardo Escobar lined one off the reliever's pitching elbow. Maton is surely headed for testing before more is known about his condition.

Picks up first save
Maton picked up the save in Sunday's win over the Angels. He allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out one in one inning.
ANALYSIS
Houston mounted a late comeback and Maton was able to escape with the save in the 9-8 after coughing up a solo homer to Shohei Ohtani. It was Maton's first save chance of the year. He's sporting a 2.51 ERA with a 51:14 K:BB and six holds through 46.2 frames.

Handed loss versus Angels
Maton (0-1) took the loss Sunday against the Angels after allowing a run on two hits over an inning of work. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
Maton relieved J.P. France to start the eighth with the game tied at one apiece and couldn't silence the Angels' bats. He surrendered a leadoff single and then a two-out double, which plated a run to put the Halos in front. The 30-year-old has given up three runs on five hits over his last two innings after he had tossed 10.2 scoreless frames from May 6 through May 30. Overall, he's still been a useful arm out of the bullpen for manager Dusty Baker and now sits at a 1.26 ERA, 0.70 WHIP, 31:4 K:BB and has four holds over 28.2 innings this season.

Fully recovered from hand injury
Maton (hand) said Thursday that he's fully recovered and expects to have a normal spring training, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Maton clarified that he might be "one bullpen behind," but it sounds like he's basically full-go at the start of camp. The reliever missed the postseason last year after fracturing his pitching hand when he punched his locker.
Jan 13, 2023
Reaches deal for 2023
Maton (hand) agreed to a one-year, $2.55 million contract with the Astros on Friday to avoid arbitration, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Maton was a solid reliever for the Astros last year with a 3.84 ERA across 67 appearances, though he missed the entirety of the postseason after he punched a locker and fractured his hand at the end of the regular season. Assuming he's fully recovered for Opening Day, the right-hander should see some high-leverage work in from of closer Ryan Pressly and setup man Rafael Montero.
Oct 11, 2022
Out with fractured hand
Maton will miss the postseason after undergoing surgery on a broken hand, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The injury was self-inflicted, as it occurred after Maton punched his locker following a poor outing to close the year Wednesday against the Phillies. Maton wasn't one of Houston's highest-leverage options this season, but the Astros still would have preferred having him and his 3.84 ERA available.
Jun 16, 2022
Works immaculate inning
Maton struck out all three batters he faced in the seventh inning of Wednesday's 9-2 win over the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
Maton threw nine pitches -- all for strikes -- to retire the side, allowing him to complete the 108th immaculate inning in MLB history. Starter Luis Garcia also threw an immaculate inning in the bottom of the second, with him and Maton becoming the first teammates in league annals to achieve the feat in the same game. Though Maton has now turned in a 2.25 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over eight innings in his last nine appearances, he has yet to gain much traction in a high-leverage role, as he hasn't recorded a save or hold during that stretch.

Reaches deal for upcoming season
Maton signed a one-year, $1.55 million contract with the Astros on Tuesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
The deal allows the two sides to avoid the awkward process of arbitration. Maton struggled to a 4.97 ERA in 25.1 innings for the Astros after a midseason move from Cleveland, with his strikeout rate plummeting from 34.3 percent prior to the deal to 20.2 percent for his new team.

Earns win in relief
Maton (6-0) earned the win Saturday against the Athletics after recording one out, allowing one hit and one walk.
ANALYSIS
Maton recorded his sixth win of the campaign, and while he recorded just one out, he needed 19 pitches to get the job done (12 strikes). If this was his final outing of the campaign, then Maton would end the year with a 4.73 ERA across 66.2 innings across 65 appearances. He has posted an ERA above the 4.00 mark in each of his five big-league seasons.

Survives for win
Maton (5-0) allowed one run on two hits while striking out two over 1.1 innings to earn the win over Tampa Bay on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Maton pitched the ninth inning of a tie game and ceded a solo home run to Randy Arozarena but was bailed out by Houston's offense. The Astros silently walked off the Rays with two bases-loaded walks in the bottom half of the inning to make a winner of Maton. Since being acquired from the Indians at the trade deadline, the right-handed reliever is 3-0 with a 5.25 ERA and 1.58 WHIP over 24 innings for Houston.
Aug 28, 2021
Yields pair of runs in win
Maton (3-0) allowed two runs on three hits and struck out two in one inning to earn the win Friday versus Texas.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander had an ugly sixth inning, but Houston rallied for all five of its runs in the seventh to put Maton in line for the win. It was his first decision since he joined Houston at the trade deadline. The 28-year-old has struggled mightily in his last 11 appearances, giving up nine runs (eight earned) in his last 11.1 innings, so he should be expected to mostly work in a low-leverage spots in a deep Houston bullpen.
Jul 30, 2021
Traded to Astros
Maton was acquired by Houston from Cleveland on Friday in exchange for outfielder Myles Straw, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Maton struggled over the first couple months of the season for Cleveland, but he's pitched well since mid-June with a 2.04 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 25:11 K:BB across 17.2 innings. The 28-year-old could see occasional high-leverage spots for the Astros but should primarily work in middle relief.
Jul 25, 2021
Seeing more high-leverage spots
Maton has earned holds in three of his five appearances since the All-Star break.
ANALYSIS
He's allowed one run on four hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in that span. Maton's season numbers aren't great -- 4.43 ERA, 1.28 WHIP -- but he's given up just three runs in his last 17 appearances. The right-hander has added four holds, a blown save and a 2-0 record. With James Karinchak and Emmanuel Clase both inconsistent in their shared closer role lately, Maton's strong pitching of late could lead to more late-inning work going forward.
Jul 9, 2021
Clean inning Thursday
Maton struck out two in a perfect inning in Thursday's 7-4 win over Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old pitched the fifth inning after starter Zach Plesac gave up three runs in four innings in his first start back from a broken thumb. Maton has strung together 5.1 scoreless innings in his last five appearances, which is his longest scoreless streak of the year. The reliever has a 4.93 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 50:16 K:BB across 34.2 innings in a low-leverage role.
Jun 20, 2021
Strikes out three in relief
Maton (2-0) gave up one run on three hits while fanning three in one inning Sunday against Pittsburgh. He earned the win.
ANALYSIS
Maton allowed Pittsburgh's lone run of the game, but he also struck out the three batters he retired en route to his second win of the campaign. The right-hander ended a streak of three scoreless outings and has given up runs in three of his seven appearances this month. He owns a 5.86 ERA across 24 appearances (27.2 innings) on the campaign.
Jun 16, 2021
Scoreless inning Tuesday
Maton allowed two hits and struck out three in a scoreless inning in Tuesday's 7-2 win over Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
Maton has been somewhat inconsistent with 12 runs allowed in his last 13.2 innings, but he was able to get out of a jam in the sixth inning Tuesday. The right-hander has a 6.20 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 39:9 K:BB and one hold in 24.2 innings. He hasn't pitched well enough so far to earn a higher-leverage role.
Jun 1, 2021
Earns win over White Sox
Maton (1-0) got the win in Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader against the White Sox after allowing a hit and punching out two in a scoreless sixth.
ANALYSIS
Maton allowed a leadoff double to Yoan Moncada but was able to take care of the next three hitters to get out of the inning with no harm done. The 28-year-old earned his first win and hold of the year and lowered his ERA to 6.75 to go along with a 26:9 K:BB over 17.1 innings.
May 22, 2021
Rocked for four runs
Maton allowed four runs on four hits and a walk over one-third of an inning in Friday's 10-0 loss to Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Maton relieved Triston McKenzie in the fourth inning, but the reliever wasn't able to stop the bleeding. The 28-year-old Maton now has a 7.62 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 18:6 K:BB across 13 innings this year. He's given up nine runs in his last six outings, so the right-hander is unlikely to see many high-leverage situations any time soon.
May 17, 2021
Puts in 1.1 scoreless innings
Maton allowed one walk and struck out one over 1.1 innings in Sunday's 3-2 loss to Seattle.
ANALYSIS
May has been a bit of a roller-coaster month for the reliever -- he's allowed five runs over 5.1 innings. For comparison, Maton only gave up two runs across 7.1 innings in April. Overall, the 28-year-old has a 4.97 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB across 12.2 innings this season. He's seen very little high-leverage work without a save or hold to his name.
May 5, 2021
Not great as opener
Maton allowed a run on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts in Tuesday's 7-3 win over Kansas City. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Maton worked as an opener Tuesday, and the only run he allowed came on a Michael Taylor single in the second inning. Through 10 innings this season, Maton owns a 4.50 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB. He'll likely return to a low-leverage role in the bullpen.
May 4, 2021
Opening Tuesday's game
Maton will serve as the opener Tuesday in Kansas City, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Sam Hentges, a big lefty, will come in after Maton records 3-to-6 outs. Maton has recorded four or five outs in three of his eight appearances but has yet to log two full frames.
Apr 28, 2021
Solid in one inning
Maton pitched a scoreless inning and allowed one hit in Wednesday's 10-2 loss to the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Cleveland was hit hard early in the game, but Nick Wittgren, Maton and Kyle Nelson combined for three scoreless innings at the end of the game. The 28-year-old Maton now has a 2.45 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 7:2 K:BB across 7.1 innings this year. He has yet to record a hold, but more strong outings could see him take on higher-leverage assignments as the season continues.
Apr 13, 2021
Works scoreless inning
Maton pitched one inning with a hit-by-pitch and one strikeout in Monday's 4-3 loss to the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Maton relieved starter Triston McKenzie for the fifth inning. The 28-year-old Maton plunked Nick Williams on his third pitch, but retired the next three batters without trouble. Maton has tossed 1.1 scoreless innings across his first two outings in 2021. The right-hander will likely work in the middle innings to begin the season.
Jan 15, 2021
Closing in on seven figures
Maton signed a one-year, $975,000 contract with Cleveland on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
ANALYSIS
Maton doesn't have the requisite saves to get a big payday in arbitration -- his lone career save came in 2017 with San Diego. It seems like he was pretty unlucky last year, as he had a sparkling 27.1 K-BB% and 2.22 FIP, but his 60.1 percent strand rate and .415 BABIP led to a 4.57 ERA. He should work in mid-leverage spots this season.
Sep 19, 2020
Implodes in loss
Maton (2-3) allowed four runs on three hits and two walks while pitching just one-third of an inning Saturday, as the Indians fell to the Tigers 5-2.
ANALYSIS
Maton took the loss and tarnished strong work from the Cleveland bullpen after starter Triston McKenzie was pulled after four innings. After logging a 3.00 ERA through his first 19 appearances, Maton ballooned his ERA to 4.91 with Saturday's showing.
Aug 26, 2020
Collects win
Maton (2-0) pitched a perfect 1.2 innings and struck out one, earning the win Wednesday versus the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Maton got the last two outs of the seventh inning and also pitched the eighth. Cleveland rallied for three runs in the eighth, making him the pitcher of record, and Brad Hand was able to close things out. The 27-year-old Maton has a 0.93 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 13 strikeouts across 9.2 innings in nine appearances this season.
Aug 9, 2020
Credited with win
Maton (1-0) pitched a perfect ninth inning and struck out two, earning the win Sunday versus the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Maton was able to force extra innings with his clean performance, and the Indians scored twice in the 10th to make him the pitcher of record. Maton has been effective in 2020 -- he's yet to allow a run with just four hits and five strikeouts over four innings. It's an improvement on the 6.14 ERA and 1.36 WHIP he carried through 36.2 innings between the Padres and Indians last season.
