Narrowly misses quality start
Olson did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over 5.2 innings against Kansas City. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old allowed just one unearned run, courtesy of his own throwing error, through the first five frames Tuesday. He surrendered his only earned run on back-to-back hits to start the sixth and despite punching out the next two batters, Olson was lifted after 5.2 innings and 92 pitches, much to the dismay of fantasy managers in leagues that reward quality starts. After surrendering six earned runs to the Cubs on Aug. 22, Olson has held opponents to fewer than three tallies in six consecutive outings, posting a 1.51 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 35:13 K:BB across 35.2 innings. During that same stretch, the right-handed rookie lowered his season-long ERA from 5.29 to 3.99, considerably increasing his fantasy draft stock for the 2024 campaign.

Keeps rolling Wednesday
Olson (5-7) earned the win Wednesday over the Dodgers, allowing one run on two hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Olson was very sharp, keeping the Dodgers' off the board until Max Muncy's solo home run in the sixth inning. Through four outings in September, Olson has allowed four runs across 25.2 innings, posting quality starts in each appearance. He's now at a 4.13 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 96:31 K:BB through 98 innings over 20 outings (17 starts) this season. He's projected for a favorable home start versus the Royals next week.
Sep 15, 2023
Another strong outing
Olson (4-7) earned the win Thursday, allowing one run on two hits and four walks over six innings against the Reds. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
Olson didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning when Jake Fraley singled to open the frame. The right-hander then surrendered a solo homer to Spencer Steer two batters later but was still able to get through the inning and earn his fourth win of the season. Olson has now allowed two earned runs or fewer in three consecutive starts to open the month, going at least six innings on each occasion. He's also recorded at least seven strikeouts in three of his last five outings.

Quality start ends in defeat
Olson (3-7) took the loss Friday, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk over 6.2 innings against the White Sox. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Olson was embarked in a 0-0 pitcher's duel with White Sox starter Mike Clevinger through six but blinked in the seventh when a two-out, two-run homer by Yoan Moncada chased him from the game. The bullpen then allowed four more runs to solidify the loss for Olson. After struggling to the tune of a 5.29 ERA over his first 68 big-league innings, Olson has begun to put things together with a 1.50 ERA in his last three starts spanning 18 innings. He'll look to continue this momentum in his next start, currently scheduled to take place when the Reds come to Detroit for a mid-week three-game set.

Seven scoreless in win
Olson improved to 3-6 Saturday, allowing four hits over seven scoreless innings in a 10-0 victory over the White Sox. He struck out one and didn't issue any walks.
ANALYSIS
Olson needed just 79 pitches to cruise through seven innings unscathed Saturday, scattering just four singles in a blowout victory. Detroit handed him a 4-0 lead before he took the hill and the 24-year-old clearly pitched to contact, as he only managed one strikeout in the outing. In the rookie's two starts following his rough outing against the Cubs on Aug. 22, Olson has allowed just one run and posted a 0.97 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB across 11.1 innings. He is currently slated for a rematch with the White Sox at the end of the upcoming week.
Aug 28, 2023
Strikes out 10 but takes loss
Olson (2-6) allowed one run on three hits across 4.1 innings and took the loss Monday against the Yankees. He walked four and struck out 10.
ANALYSIS
It was a mixed bag for Olson, who needed 100 pitches to retire only 13 batters. However, the rookie also recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts and limited New York to just the one run, which kept the Tigers in the game until the bullpen faltered. Despite not completing five innings, it was a step in the right direction for Olson after allowing 10 runs over his last two starts (7.1 innings). The righty will look to keep this up and go a bit deeper in the contest during his next outing, which is currently penciled in for Saturday against the White Sox.
Aug 23, 2023
Six earned runs in no-decision
Olson did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing six runs on four hits and three walks over 4.2 innings against the Cubs. He struck out seven.
ANALYSIS
The rookie right-hander stymied Chicago's offense through the first three innings, but the floodgates opened in the fourth when Dansby Swanson and Jeimer Candelario each launched two-run homers. Two more runs were charged to Olson after he was removed with two outs in the fifth and despite Detroit maintaining the lead for the remainder of the game, Olson's failure to complete five innings prevented him from earning the victory. The 24-year-old tossed a gem against Minnesota on Aug. 10, but has allowed 10 earned runs across 7.1 innings in his two starts since then.
Aug 16, 2023
Struggles but takes no-decision
Olson allowed four runs on eight hits across 2.2 innings and did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Twins. He walked one and struck out three.
ANALYSIS
After holding Minnesota scoreless over six innings in his last start, it was a different story for Olson on Wednesday. The rookie labored, as he needed 67 pitches to retire eight batters and allowed way too many baserunners. However, his offense bailed him out in an eventual 8-7 Detroit win. Olson has shown some promise in his debut season, but inconsistency has left him with a 4.83 ERA overall. The righty should stick in the rotation, and he lines up to start again Monday against the Cubs.
Aug 10, 2023
Dominant in win
Olson (2-5) earned the win Thursday, allowing two hits and three walks over six scoreless innings against Minnesota. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
The rookie right-hander turned in the best start of his young career, outdueling opposing starter Kenta Maeda to earn the victory. Olson had been mired in mediocrity in his previous four starts since rejoining Detroit's rotation July 16, going 0-3 with a 6.33 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 21.1 innings during that stretch. The 24-year-old currently lines up for a rematch versus Minnesota next week.
Aug 5, 2023
Takes fifth loss
Olson (1-5) took the loss Friday, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over five innings against Tampa Bay. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Isaac Paredes drove in a pair with his double off Olson in the first inning, and Jose Siri followed up with a long ball in the second. That would prove to be more than enough offense for the Rays in this one as the Tigers were shut out. Olson remains with just one win in 12 appearances (nine starts) this season, but that's not all his fault. The 24-year-old righty has a 1.17 WHIP and 50:13 K:BB over 54.2 innings -- numbers that suggest there will be better days ahead.
Jul 29, 2023
Gives up four runs in six innings
Olson did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing four runs on eight hits over six innings against the Marlins. He struck out two and did not record a walk.
ANALYSIS
Olson made his third straight start following the All-Star break and completed at least six innings for the first time this season. However, the right-hander continues to struggle with the long ball, having now allowed four over his past three starts and eight across 11 total appearances. Olson has been able to eat up innings at the big-league level, but overall, his results have been subpar and his role remains in flux.
Jul 22, 2023
Falters early versus San Diego
Olson (1-4) took the loss Friday, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings in a 5-4 loss against San Diego. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Three of the five runs Olson allowed were due to Juan Soto's pair of home runs, but the right-hander was able to settle down and tossed two scoreless frames before getting replaced. The lack of run support has emerged as a trend for Olson, who's made back-to-back starts following the All-Star break. During those outings, he's allowed seven runs on 13 hits and two walks while posting 10 strikeouts over 10.1 innings, but the Padres haven't scored with him on the mound in either of those contests. Olson's spot at the back of Detroit's rotation is far from secure, but he figures to get at least one more look with Alex Faedo still at Triple-A Toledo.
Jul 16, 2023
Allows only two runs in loss
Olson (1-3) allowed two runs on six hits across 5.1 innings to take the loss Sunday against the Mariners. He had no walks and struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Olson pitched pretty well but got no run support in the 2-0 defeat. The rookie was limited to just 75 pitches after working in long relief his last two appearances, though he may be able to build that number up if he sticks in the rotation moving forward. Olson has looked good lately, compiling a 2.33 ERA over his last five games (19.1 innings), lowering his season ERA to a solid 3.96. He's tentatively set to take the mound again Friday against the Padres.
Jul 13, 2023
Plugged back into rotation
Olson is scheduled to start Sunday's game in Seattle.
ANALYSIS
Prior to the All-Star break, Olson had made his last two appearances in relief, piggybacking starter Tarik Skubal for five innings and two innings on July 4 and July 9, respectively. With the Tigers optioning Alex Faedo to Triple-A Toledo last weekend, the team now has spots available in the rotation for both Skubal and Olson. The latter will take the hill for the series finale in Seattle, while Skubal will presumably start either Monday or Tuesday in Kansas City.
Jul 4, 2023
Tosses five scoreless innings
Olson (knee) pitched five scoreless innings of relief and did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's extra-inning loss to the Athletics. He allowed a hit and walk, while striking out five.
ANALYSIS
The Tigers welcomed back Tarik Skubal, who returned from flexor tendon surgery to start and pitch four scoreless innings of his own in his season debut. Olson left his last appearance early after taking a comebacker to the knee, but he didn't end up missing any time, and the rookie looked sharp Tuesday. With Skubal back, it remains to be seen how Olson will slot in moving forward, though with the Tigers missing several other starters due to injury, he has a good chance of sliding back into the rotation.
Jun 29, 2023
X-rays clean on knee
X-rays turned up negative Thursday on Olson's left knee, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Olson limped off the field after getting struck by a comebacker in the second inning of his start Thursday afternoon against the Rangers. He told reporters after the game that he expects to take his next scheduled turn in the Tigers' rotation, but the 23-year-old right-hander will be closely evaluated over the next few days before any decisions are made. Detroit's pitching staff has been brutalized by injuries in recent weeks.
Jun 29, 2023
Dealing with knee contusion
Olson has been diagnosed with a left knee contusion as a result of being hit by a comebacker Thursday versus the Rangers, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. He allowed one run with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings before exiting.
ANALYSIS
It's good news for an initial diagnosis, although it's not clear at this poitn whether Olson is set to undergo any additional testing. The right-hander's next turn is tentatively scheduled for early next week at home versus the Athletics, but it's too soon to say whether he'll be ready to take the ball that day.
Jun 29, 2023
Exits after being hit by comebacker
Olson was removed from Thursday's start against the Rangers in the second inning after being hit on the left leg by a comebacker, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Olson was struck by a 103.5 mph screamer off the bat of Josh Smith and immediately crumpled to the ground in pain. He eventually walked off the field under his own power following a lengthy chat with Tigers manager A.J. Hinch and the trainer. Olson was charged with one run on three hits and a walk before leaving.
Jun 24, 2023
Strikes out nine in win
Olson (1-2) earned the win Saturday over the Twins. He allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out nine over 5.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
The lone blemish on Olson's line was a Carlos Correa solo home run in the sixth inning. The win was Olson's first of the year, coming in his fifth major-league appearance. He's kept opponents to two runs or fewer in three of those outings. For the season, he has a 4.74 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 28:6 K:BB over 24.2 innings. Those strong strikeout and walk numbers bode well for future success. The rookie right-hander is projected for a challenging road start at Texas next week. With Matt Manning (foot) and Tarik Skubal (elbow) nearing returns withing the next couple of weeks, it's unclear if Olson has shown enough to stay in the major-league rotation into July.
Jun 19, 2023
Logs quality start Monday
Olson allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits across six innings and did not factor into the decision Monday against the Royals. He walked one and struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
This was Reese's first quality start at the MLB level in three tries and his longest outing during his brief tenure with the Tigers. The righty showed a promising uptick with the career-high eight strikeouts, as he came into the contest with 11 across 13.1 innings and just five total over his last two outings, which spanned 8.1 innings. Olson is still sitting with a subpar 5.59 ERA overall, though his Monday performance lends some optimism moving forward. He should stick in Detroit's rotation for now with several starters on the injured list.
Jun 14, 2023
Hit hard in Tuesday's loss
Olson (0-2) took the loss in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against Atlanta, coughing up seven runs (six earned) on five hits and two walks over 3.1 innings as Detroit fell 10-7. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
The Tigers handed Olson a 4-0 lead after two innings against Atlanta ace Spencer Strider, but Olson quickly squandered it and got chased after 89 pitches (57 strikes). It was a sudden wake-up call for the rookie right-hander after he'd held the White Sox and Phillies in check in his first two big-league appearances, but his spot in the rotation is likely secure until some of Detroit's injured pitchers begin returning from the IL, with Alex Faedo (finger) and Tarik Skubal (elbow) at the head of the queue. Olson will take a 6.08 ERA and 11:4 K:BB through 13.1 innings into his next outing, which could come at home early next week against the Royals.
Jun 13, 2023
Start vs. Atlanta postponed
Olson's scheduled start versus Atlanta on Tuesday was postponed due to inclement weather, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Olson was scheduled to square off against Spencer Strider, but the poor weather in Detroit won't allows that to happen Tuesday. The game will be made up Wednesday with the two teams playing a straight doubleheader, and it's likely both will be involved in one of the two contests.
Jun 8, 2023
Solid in no-decision
Olson allowed a run on three hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings in Thursday's 3-2 loss against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
Olson's certainly held his own through his first two big-league starts -- he's allowed three runs on five hits in 10 innings. The 23-year-old right-hander struggled to a 6.38 ERA in Triple-A this season, so there's some risk here. However, Olson should at least get an extended look in the majors while the Tigers deal with a myriad of injuries in their starting rotation. He'd line up for a tough home matchup with Atlanta in his next outing.
Jun 7, 2023
Will not start Thursday
Olson will not start Thursday's game for the Tigers in Philadelphia, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Olson had been the scheduled starter for Wednesday's game which was postponed due to poor air quality conditions. He will now be pushed back at least until the weekend, with reliever Tyler Holton taking the ball Thursday.
Jun 7, 2023
Start postponed due to air quality
Olson's start against the Phillies on Wednesday was postponed due to poor air quality.
ANALYSIS
Olson was scheduled to square off against Zack Wheeler, but that outing will be bumped at least a day with Wednesday's game now scheduled for Thursday.
Jun 7, 2023
Receiving another start
Olson will start Wednesday's game against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
ANALYSIS
Though he ended up taking a loss last Friday in Chicago versus the White Sox, Olson held his own in his MLB debut, striking out six over five innings while allowing two earned runs on just two hits and one walk. With several starting pitching candidates still residing on the injured list, Olson should have a decent amount of leash in the Detroit rotation if he can remain serviceable in his future outings.
Jun 2, 2023
No support in debut
Olson (0-1) took the loss Friday versus the White Sox, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out six over five-plus innings.
ANALYSIS
Olson traded zeroes with Mike Clevinger for five frames, but the White Sox were able to make some noise against him and reliever Will Vest in the sixth. Despite the end result, it was an encouraging big-league debut for Olson, though the White Sox are far from the toughest team in the league. If the right-hander gets another turn in the rotation, he lines up for a road start in Philadelphia next week.
Jun 2, 2023
Officially promoted for debut
The Tigers recalled Olson from Triple-A Toledo on Friday ahead of his start against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Olson will enter the Tigers' rotation in place of the injured Eduardo Rodriguez (finger). The 23-year-old righty doesn't have great stats in Triple-A this season, but he's been able to put it together as of late. Over his last three starts with Toledo, he's allowed two runs in 14.1 innings while maintaining a 22:6 K:BB ratio. Olson collects strikeouts at an impressive rate, but his inability to work deep into games limits his fantasy value.
May 31, 2023
Getting call-up for Friday start
The Tigers will call up Olson from Triple-A Toledo to start Friday's game against the White Sox, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
As anticipated, Olson will be join the Tigers in Chicago for what will be his MLB debut as he steps into the rotation for the injured Eduardo Rodriguez (finger). The 23-year-old right-hander owns a poor 6.38 ERA and 1.77 WHIP over 36.2 innings at Triple-A this season, but he's looked far sharper over his last six starts with Toledo. During that stretch, he's turned in a 3.00 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 32:15 K:BB across 27 innings. Given that Olson hasn't covered more than five innings in any start this season, he could struggle to work deep enough into his upcoming outings with the big club to qualify for wins.
May 30, 2023
Likely to enter rotation
Olson is the "leading candidate" to take Eduardo Rodriguez (finger) spot in the Tigers' rotation on Friday versus the White Sox, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Olson has struggled this season at Triple-A Toledo with a 6.38 ERA, but he has a 1.26 ERA and 22:6 K:BB over 14.3 frames covering his last three starts. He's also already on the 40-man roster. If Olson is indeed the choice to start Friday, the 23-year-old would be making his major-league debut.
Mar 10, 2023
Optioned to Triple-A
Olson was optioned to Triple-A Toledo by the Tigers on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Any slim chance Olson might have had to make the Opening Day roster was squashed by an abdominal injury he suffered early on in camp. The good news is he's healthy now, so he should be part of Toledo's rotation when their season begins.
Mar 7, 2023
Cleared for all activities
Olson (abdomen) has been cleared for all baseball activities, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Olson has been slowed by abdominal soreness this spring but is now ready to roll. It's not clear when he might make his Grapefruit League debut but it shouldn't be long.
Mar 3, 2023
Set for bullpen session Saturday
Olson (abdomen) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Olson has dealt with abdominal soreness all spring, but a recent MRI came back clean and he's ready to test things out from the bump. The pitching prospect is in line to begin the season at Triple-A Toledo.
Mar 1, 2023
MRI reveals no strain
Olson (abdomen) is day-to-day after an MRI revealed no strain, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Olson has been dealing with a sore abdomen, but there's no structural damage according to the imaging. The left-hander is expected to open the season in Triple-A Toledo, and he should be able to get appearances in the Grapefruit League if there are no setbacks.
Feb 28, 2023
Nursing abdominal soreness
Olson will receive an MRI Tuesday due to left abdominal soreness, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Olson had been sidelined by a sore pitching elbow but now it appears he has a new injury to deal with. More will be known about his status after the results of the MRI are in.
Feb 24, 2023
Slated for live BP
Olson (elbow) will throw live batting practice on March 1, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Olson has been eased into things during camp due to some soreness in his pitching elbow, but he appears to be making progress. The 23-year-old is likely set to begin the season at Triple-A Toledo.
