Sanmartin (elbow) signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Nov. 19.

Sanmartin underwent Tommy John surgery in early July before being non-tendered by the Reds in mid-November. While it's unclear whether his new minor-league contract is a one-year or two-year deal, he'll at least be able to begin his recovery process as part of the organization.

Sanmartin (elbow) was non-tendered by the Reds on Friday.

Sanmartin will miss much of the 2024 season after requiring Tommy John surgery this past July, but he is only 27 years old and should eventually find a taker in free agency.

The Reds confirmed that Sanmartin (elbow) underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery July 7, MLB.com reports.

At the time Sanmartin went under the knife, reports merely stated that he had surgery to repair his UCL, but it wasn't specifically noted whether he had Tommy John surgery or an alternative procedure such an internal brace surgery, the latter of which often carries a shorter recovery timeline. With Sanmartin having now been confirmed to have had Tommy John surgery, he'll be in store for at least a year-long rehab and recovery process, meaning that he likely won't be an option for the Cincinnati bullpen until after the 2024 All-Star break.

Sanmartin (elbow) underwent season-ending UCL surgery back on July 7, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

The initial hope was that Sanmartin would be able to return in 2023, but a more serious issue was discovered beyond the initial diagnosis of a stress reaction in his left elbow. It wasn't reported as Tommy John surgery specifically, but this will take Sanmartin out for the remainder of the season and could threaten his availability for the start of spring training.

The Reds transferred Sanmartin (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list Sunday, Paige Leckie of MLB.com reports.

Sanmartin is currently expected to miss the next six weeks while he recovers from a stress reaction in his left elbow. The southpaw reliever is now off the 40-man roster and could be back as a middle-innings option for the Reds right around the All-Star break.

The Reds placed Sanmartin on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 8, with a left elbow stress reaction.

Sanmartin will be away from the club for at least a couple of weeks. He has struggled to a 7.07 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 13:10 K:BB through 14 innings of relief this season with Cincinnati.

Sanmartin departed Sunday's appearance versus the White Sox due to left elbow soreness, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Sanmartin was charged with three runs over 1.1 innings Sunday before exiting. He will be re-evaluated Monday, at which point we should know whether he'll require a stint on the injured list.

Sanmartin (1-0) earned the win Tuesday against the Rangers, picking up a strikeout in a clean eighth inning.

Sanmartin set the Rangers down in order in the top of the eighth before the Reds rallied to take a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the frame, handing Sanmartin his first win of the year. The 27-year-old left-hander has allowed four runs in 11.1 innings this year, good for a 3.18 ERA. He has a 1.41 WHIP and 10:7 K:BB. Sanmartin should see a fair amount of action this year as the Reds' best left-handed option out of the bullpen, though it won't likely translate to much in the way of fantasy production.

Sanmartin retired the only batter he faced Saturday, retiring Oneil Cruz on a ground ball to end the eighth inning.

Because the Reds were up by four runs at the time, Sanmartin was not eligible for a hold. It appears that he'll be deployed to retire key lefties late in games this year after beginning 2022 as a starter.

Sanmartin was recalled by the Reds on Monday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Sanmartin broke camp in the major-league rotation but was optioned within a month after struggling to an awful 13.78 ERA across five appearances. His 7.36 ERA in 18.1 innings as a swingman for Triple-A Louisville hardly inspires confidence, though his 26:4 K:BB at that level is far more encouraging.

Sanmartin (0-4) had another nightmare start Sunday, giving up six runs on six hits and two walks while recording only two outs. After the game, Sanmartin was optioned to Triple-A Louisville, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Sanmartin has allowed five or more runs in four of his five outings this season, with the one exception being when he came in after Luis Cessa opened for him. With the Reds needing to pare down their roster from 28 to 26, and them being off on Monday, Sanmartin was an obvious option to send down. By the time they need to replace him in the rotation, they'll likely have have Luis Castillo back from the IL.

Sanmartin (0-3) took the loss to the Padres on Tuesday, allowing nine earned runs on eight hits and one walk over three-plus innings. He struck out two batters.

Everything unraveled for Sanmartin in the fourth inning, although not a lot outside of Eric Hosmer's home run was hit particularly hard. Regardless, Sanmartin now sits with a 10.91 ERA this season, so he may very well be the odd man out of the rotation once Luis Castillo (shoulder) is ready to go. The Reds could even turn elsewhere in the meantime or perhaps go with a bullpen day in Sanmartin's spot.

Tommy Pham once again gave the Reds an early lead, and just like Nick Lodolo did in the series opener, Sanmartin gave the lead right back in the bottom of the first on a two-run Manny Machado homer. Sanmartin now sits with a 7.11 ERA and 8:6 K:BB in 12.2 innings this season. He looked comfortable and pitched better following an opener in his April 14 outing against the Dodgers, so perhaps the Reds will experiment with the lefty in the bulk-relief role again soon. Given the team context, Sanmartin will be difficult to deploy in any format, at least until he shows more consistency.

Sanmartin pitches five scoreless innings against the Dodgers on Thursday, allowing two hits and no walks while striking out two. He didn't factor in the decision.

Sanmartin was originally scheduled to start the contest, but the Reds instead tabbed Luis Cessa to work as an opener with Sanmartin following behind him. Cessa didn't perform well in the role, giving up five hits and three runs in one frame, but Sanmartin allowed Cincinnati to get back in the game with five scoreless innings. The left-hander yielded only two baserunners -- both on singles -- and threw 48 of 75 pitches for strikes. It remains to be seen how the Reds will use Sanmartin moving forward; if he moves back into a starting role, his next start will likely come in San Diego against the Padres next week.

The 25-year-old was previously penciled in to start Thursday's series opener, but reliever Luis Cessa will instead take the mound for Cincinnati. The team hasn't officially announced that Sanmartin will pitch, but following an opener could be beneficial against a stacked lineup after giving up five earned runs in his first start of the season.

Sanmartin gave up five runs on four hits and five walks in 2.1 innings in Friday's loss to the Braves. He struggled in the relatively cold weather in Atlanta to find a grip on the ball, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "It was the cold right there," Sanmartin said. "I couldn't really feel the ball. I have to keep working at it and move on."

Unlike many of the Reds other young starters, Sanmartin doesn't throw especially hard and relies on typically good control to get by. When that's taken away, he's especially vulnerable, as was the case Friday night.

Manager David Bell said Wednesday that Sanmartin will start the Reds' second game of the season April 8 in Atlanta, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Coming into spring training, Sanmartin was one of a handful of pitchers battling for the two open rotation spots behind Luis Castillo, Sonny Gray and Tyler Mahle. The Reds then traded Gray to the Twins and acquired a replacement for him in Mike Minor, but the latter won't be ready to go for the start of the season while he recovers from a shoulder injury. Meanwhile, Castillo is also set to begin the campaign on the injured list due to a shoulder issue of his own, so Sanmartin was able to claim a rotation spot without having to truly battle for the job. Whether Sanmartin maintains a starting role by the time Castillo and Minor are healthy will hinge on his performance over the first couple of weeks of the season. The 25-year-old lefty turned in an impressive 2021 campaign at Triple-A Louisville before making two solid late-season starts for the big club in which he allowed two earned runs over 11.2 innings while striking out 11 and walking two.

Sanmartin enjoyed a breakout of sorts last season, culminating in two starts at the end of the season with the big club. Working against him is that he doesn't throw all that hard, averaging 89.4 mph. The Reds view him as a pitcher that can both start or relieve. "Sanmartin gives us great flexibility because he can be a starter," manager David Bell said. "He could potentially also be a reliever. We don't have a lot of left-handed options in the bullpen. It's nice to have the ability to do either, depending on how everything else shakes out."

Sanmartin walked Anthony Alford with the bases loaded in the first inning but settled in for five scoreless innings after that. His first two career MLB starts came against the Pirates and he took full advantage, posting a 1.54 ERA with an 11:2 K:BB while going 2-0. The 6-foot-2 southpaw should begin the 2022 season with a spot in the starting rotation after a strong debut.

Sanmartin is scheduled to start Sunday in the Reds' season finale against the Pirates in Pittsburgh, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.

Cincinnati will reward Sanmartin with a second turn through the rotation after he shined Monday in his MLB debut, which also came against the Pirates. The 25-year-old lefty covered 5.2 innings in the outing, giving up a run on five hits and a walk while striking out five en route to capturing the win. The Reds freed up a spot in the rotation for Sanmartin by moving Vladimir Gutierrez to the bullpen.

The 25-year-old southpaw could be in line for another start against the Pirates this weekend in Pittsburgh.

Cincinnati designated catcher Beau Taylor for assignment and placed Luis Castillo (personal) on the family medical emergency list to clear room for Sanmartin on the 40-man roster and 28-man active roster, respectively. Sanmartin will immediately slot into the rotation Monday, and he could line up for a two-start week with the status of Castillo and Wade Miley (neck) in question for next weekend's three-game series in Pittsburgh. Sanmartin, a 25-year-old lefty, submitted a 3.94 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 89:23 K:BB across 82.1 innings at Louisville this season.
