Not on NLDS roster
Yarbrough isn't listed on the Dodgers' roster for the NLDS, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough turned in an ugly performance in his season finale, surrendering nine runs in four innings while striking out just two batters en route to a loss Sept. 28 against Colorado. As a result, he'll be passed up for the postseason roster while Emmet Sheehan and Michael Grove both earn spots.
Sep 29, 2023
Pummeled in Colorado
Yarbrough (8-7) allowed nine runs on 11 hits and one walk while striking out two over four innings to take the loss versus the Rockies on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough had allowed just eight runs over his first 15.1 innings in September, but a trip to Coors Field was responsible for his worst outing of the season. It inflated his ERA to 4.52 with a 1.23 WHIP and 67:14 K:BB through 89.2 innings between the Dodgers and the Royals. The southpaw will likely operate as a long-relief option during the Dodgers' postseason run.
Sep 28, 2023
Gets starting nod Thursday
Yarbrough is listed as the Dodgers' probable starting pitcher for Thursday's game against the Rockies.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw will be making just his second start for the Dodgers since being acquired in an Aug. 1 deal with the Royals, but he should be able to provide Los Angeles with plenty of length. He's worked three-plus innings in nine of his 10 outings with the Dodgers, pitching to a 3.12 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 36:4 K:BB over 34.2 innings. With a strong showing Thursday, Yarbrough could cement a spot in the Dodgers' postseason rotation, but he'll otherwise fill a key relief role if he misses out on a starting role.
Sep 23, 2023
Mops up in loss to Giants
Yarbrough struck out five and was charged with two earned runs on five hits and one walk over 3.2 innings in Friday's 5-1 loss to the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough was one of two bulk relievers the Dodgers used behind opener Caleb Ferguson, who exited the contest after one inning. Right-hander Gavin Stone then came on and gave up three earned runs over 4.1 innings before Yarbrough finished out the contest. Since the Padres raced out to a 3-0 lead while Stone was on the mound, Yarbrough was spared the loss. Yarbrough now holds a 3.12 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 36:4 K:BB over 34.2 innings in 10 outings since being acquired from the Royals on Aug. 1.
Sep 22, 2023
In line for bulk relief
Yarbrough is expected to serve as a bulk reliever in Friday's game versus the Giants, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Caleb Ferguson will be the Dodgers' opener. It's possible the team will use a right-hander in between Ferguson and Yarbrough in order to break up the lefties, but Yarbrough looks to be in line to eat up the bulk of the innings.
Sep 21, 2023
Could piggyback Sheehan
The Dodgers could deploy Yarbrough as a piggyback pitcher behind starter Emmet Sheehan in Thursday's game against the Giants, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
While manager Dave Roberts hasn't revealed how he plans to manage his pitching staff in the series opener, piggybacking the right-handed Sheehan with the left-handed Yarbrough would make sense. The Dodgers are cognizant of managing the rookie Sheehan's workload and haven't had him cover more than five innings in the majors or minors since July 29, so having him toss three or four frames before exiting the contest may be Roberts' preferred approach. Additionally, having Yarbrough enter the contest midway through the contest would help the Dodgers neutralize a Giants lineup that often contains four lefty bats in Michael Conforto, Joc Pederson, Mike Yastrzemski and LaMonte Wade. Yarbrough last pitched Sunday, but he should be capable of giving the Dodgers three or four innings on three days' rest, if necessary.
Sep 17, 2023
Earns win in return
Yarbrough (8-6) earned the win Sunday over the Mariners, allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out seven over 4.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough was away from the team to attend the birth of his daughter, though he was not officially placed on the paternity list. He was strong in his return, with the lone misstep being a J.P. Crawford RBI single in the second inning. Yarbrough has pitched to a 2.90 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP and 31:3 K:BB over 31 innings since he was traded from the Royals to the Dodgers. He's found success as a bulk reliever and will likely continue in that role. Given his typical schedule, he should be available again for his next appearance during next weekend's four-game series against the Giants.
Sep 10, 2023
Heading to paternity list
Manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that Yarbrough will be placed on the paternity list, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough started Sunday's game against the Nationals and allowed two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out five in four innings. However, he'll now be away from the team for a few days following the birth of his child. Gavin Stone is slated to be recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday to start the series opener against San Diego.
Sep 8, 2023
Bulk pitcher Sunday
Yarbrough is expected to serve as the Dodgers' bulk pitcher Sunday at Washington, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough will either enter behind an opener or make a traditional start, but he's slated to handle the majority of the innings for Los Angeles. The 31-year-old left-hander has worked to an impressive 2.82 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 19:1 K:BB in 22.1 frames of long relief since being acquired from the Royals at the Aug. 1 trade deadline.
Aug 31, 2023
Goes four innings for save
Yarbrough allowed four hits and struck out four without walking a batter over four shutout innings to earn the save in Wednesday's 7-0 win over the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough continues to serve as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen, and this is the second time in six appearances as a Dodger that he's logged a save of three-plus innings. He's maintained a 1.86 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 16:1 K:BB over 19.1 innings with his new team, and he's also collected three wins while still roughly operating every fifth day or so. Yarbrough is at a 3.58 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 45:10 K:BB through 70.1 innings overall when accounting for his time with the Royals. If Ryan Pepiot sticks in the rotation beyond Wednesday, Yarbrough may often serve as a piggyback for the young right-hander.
Aug 16, 2023
Collects three-inning save
Yarbrough allowed a run on one hit and struck out two over three innings to earn the save in Tuesday's 6-2 win over the Brewers.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough allowed a solo home run to Carlos Santana to start the seventh inning, then retired the next nine batters in a row. The three-inning outing earned Yarbrough his first major-league save. The southpaw has allowed two runs over 10.1 innings across his three appearances with the Dodgers, though it appears he's going to remain in a long-relief role with the rotation in a healthier state than when he arrived a couple of weeks ago. For the year, he's at a 3.82 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 38:9 K:BB through 61.1 innings between the Dodgers and the Royals.
Aug 6, 2023
Covers bulk innings
Yarbrough allowed a run on three hits and struck out three without walking a batter over 4.1 innings as the bulk reliever in Saturday's 8-3 loss to the Padres. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough's no stranger to working behind an opener in his career, and the Dodgers appear to want to continue that, at least for now. It worked in his team debut, though the bullpen couldn't maintain the lead after an eighth-inning meltdown. Yarbrough has started seven of his 15 appearances this season, posting a 4.07 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 32:9 K:BB through 55.1 innings while earning a 4-5 record. With Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) expected back next week, Yarbrough may have to settle for a more traditional multi-inning relief role unless the Dodgers want to go with something resembling a six-man rotation.
Aug 1, 2023
Dealt to Dodgers
Yarbrough was traded from the Royals to the Dodgers on Tuesday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear what the Dodgers are sending back, but it could just be cash or a throw-in prospect. Yarbrough, 31, has a 4.24 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 29 strikeouts in 51 innings this season while working as both a starter and a bulk reliever. He will likely occupy a long-relief role while making the occasional spot start for the Dodgers.
Jul 31, 2023
Picks up fourth win
Yarbrough (4-5) earned the win over the Twins on Sunday after allowing one run on seven hits while striking out five over seven innings.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough's five strikeouts tied his season high, and the seven innings was the longest he's gone this year. He generated 12 whiffs and a 32 percent CSW and has continued to be a pleasant surprise for the Royals since returning from the IL July 9. In four starts since then, Yarbrough's posted a 2.19 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 15:2 K:BB in 24.2 innings. The southpaw currently lines up for a tough test against the Phillies on the road next weekend.
Jul 24, 2023
Tosses six innings in win
Yarbrough (3-5) yielded one run on six hits over six innings Monday, striking out one and earning a win over Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough fired five scoreless frames before the Guardians finally broke up the shutout in the sixth inning. He's given up five runs across 17.2 frames (2.55 ERA) in three starts this month since returning from the 60-day injured list. The 31-year-old lefty lowered his season ERA to 4.70 with a 24:9 K:BB through 44 innings this season. Yarbrough is currently projected for a home matchup against the Twins this weekend.
Jul 23, 2023
Cleared for next start
Yarbrough (hamstring) will start Monday's game against the Guardians at Progressive Field.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough had to exit midway through the sixth inning of his most recent start Wednesday against the Tigers after developing a cramp in his left hamstring, but he was quickly able to move past the issue. He'll return to the hill Monday on his usual four days' rest and will carry a 5.21 ERA and 1.26 WHIP into the contest.
Jul 19, 2023
Leaves with cramp
Yarbrough was removed from his start Wednesday against the Tigers due to a left hamstring cramp, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough appeared to have tweaked something before walking off the field with trainers, and it's now been confirmed to be his hamstring giving him problems. Yarbrough is tentatively scheduled to pitch again Monday against Cleveland, and he figures to be ready to go by then.
Jul 19, 2023
Exits with injury
Yarbrough left his start during Wednesday's game against Detroit with an apparent injury, Jaylon T. Thompson of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
It's unclear what exactly is bothering Yarbrough, but he left the game alongside the Royals' training staff after presumably tweaking something. More information should be released shortly, but Yarbrough should be considered day-to-day for now. The 31-year-old lefty had surrendered three runs on six hits while striking out four batters through 5.2 innings.
Jul 18, 2023
Gets another start
Yarbrough is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Tigers at Kauffman Stadium.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Yarbrough will stick around in the Kansas City rotation after he returned from the 60-day injured list in impressive fashion in the Royals' final game before the All-Star break July 9. He worked six innings against the Guardians that day, striking out five while allowing one earned run on six hits and one walk en route to claiming his second win of the season. Before missing two months after suffering multiple fractures to his head when he was struck by a line drive in a May 7 outing, Yarbrough had accrued a 6.15 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 6.2 K-BB% in 26.1 innings, so his overall body of work doesn't inspire much confidence for his fantasy outlook moving forward despite his strong showing versus the Guardians.
Jul 10, 2023
Impresses in return from IL
Yarbrough (2-4) got the win over the Guardians on Sunday, allowing just one run on six hits and a walk while striking out five over six innings.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough was fantastic in his return to the mound, allowing just one extra-base hit and tying his season-high with five strikeouts. It was the first time he's reached six innings in four starts, though he was only one out short in his last start before being forced to leave the game. The 30-year-old will head into the break with a 5.29 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 19:8 K:BB over 32.1 innings and should stick in the rotation for the time being until Zack Greinke (shoulder) and Brad Keller (shoulder) are able to return from their respective injuries.
Jul 9, 2023
Activated for Sunday start
The Royals reinstated Yarbrough (head) from the 60-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Sunday in Cleveland.
ANALYSIS
Kansas City designated reliever Amir Garrett for assignment to clear room on the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster for Yarbrough, who was on the shelf for close to the 60-day minimum after exiting a May 7 start versus the Athletics when he was struck on the head by a line drive. Yarbrough suffered multiple fractures to his head but demonstrated rapid progress in his recovery and was cleared to begin a rehab assignment June 19. After running up a 2.55 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 20:2 K:BB in 17.2 innings over the course of four starts in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League and at Triple-A Omaha, Yarbrough will take back his spot as the Royals' No. 5 starter.
Jul 9, 2023
Slated to start Sunday
The Royals will reinstate Yarbrough (head) from the 60-day injured list to start Sunday's game in Cleveland, Jaylon T. Thompson of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough will be returning to the Kansas City rotation for his first start since May 7, when he exited an outing against Oakland midway through the sixth inning after being struck on the head by a line drive. The veteran southpaw suffered multiple head fractures and was eventually moved to the 60-day IL, but he'll be cleared to return in close to the minimum amount of time on the heels of a successful rehab assignment. Between stops in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League and at Triple-A Omaha, Yarbrough submitted a 2.55 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 20:2 K:BB in 17.2 innings. He built up to six innings and 81 pitches in his most recent outing for Omaha on Tuesday and shouldn't face any major workload restrictions in his return to the big leagues.
Jul 6, 2023
Tosses six scoreless frames
Yarbrough (head) struck out six over six scoreless innings Tuesday in his rehab start for Triple-A Omaha. He scattered three hits and issued one walk in the 81-pitch outing.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough was placed on the 15-day injured list May 8 after suffering multiple head fractures when he was struck by a line drive a day earlier in his start with the Royals. He was later transferred to the 60-day IL, but based on how he's fared thus far during his rehab assignment, Yarbrough looks like he could be ready to rejoin the Royals when he's first eligible for activation this weekend. Between one start in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League and three at Omaha, Yarbrough has stringed together a 2.55 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 20:2 K:BB in 17.2 innings. The Royals have confirmed starting pitchers for the first three games of their four-game set in Cleveland this weekend, but Yarbrough might be called upon to fill the opening Sunday.
Jun 24, 2023
Fires four scoreless in rehab
Yarbrough (head) threw four scoreless innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Omaha on Saturday. He allowed four hits with three strikeouts in the effort.
ANALYSIS
It was the first Triple-A rehab start for Yarbrough since the left-hander suffered multiple fractures in head after being hit by a comebacker in the early portion of May. The 31-year-old is currently on the 60-day injured list, and won't be eligible to return until July 8 at the earliest. Yarbrough will likely make at least three more rehab starts before having a chance to return to the Kansas City pitching staff around the All-Star break.
Jun 24, 2023
Moving rehab to Triple-A
Yarbrough (head) will start for Triple-A Omaha on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough's first rehab appearance came in an Arizona Complex League game Monday, and he allowed three runs on five hits and no walks with two strikeouts over three innings versus the White Sox's rookie-ball affiliate. The southpaw is not eligible to be activated until early July, so he's likely to have at least another outing or two in the minors while recovering from multiple fractures in his head.
Jun 18, 2023
Beginning rehab assignment Monday
Yarbrough (head) will begin a rehab assignment with the Royals' Arizona Complex League affiliate Monday.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough has been on the injured list since May 8 after being hit in the head by a line drive, and he was transferred to the 60-day IL in mid-May. However, he faced hitters Wednesday and has now been cleared to return to game action in the minors. The southpaw isn't eligible to be activated until early July, but he should have plenty of time to build back up during his rehab assignment.
Jun 12, 2023
Facing hitters Wednesday
Yarbrough (head) will throw a three-inning live batting practice Wednesday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Royals placed Yarbrough on the injured list May 8 after he got hit in the head by a line drive, and they later shifted him to the 60-day IL. He won't be eligible to return until July, but Wednesday's session will be useful in determining next steps for the 31-year-old southpaw.
May 17, 2023
Transferred to 60-day IL
Kansas City transferred Yarbrough (head) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list Wednesday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough was placed on the injured list Ma7 8 with head fractures after he was hit in the head by a line drive, and he'll now miss at least two months after being moved to the 60-day IL. The southpaw's removal from the 40-man roster opens up a spot for Mike Mayers with the Royals selecting the contract of Mayers before Wednesday's game against the Padres.
May 9, 2023
Won't need surgery
Yarbrough (head) has been discharged from the hospital and he will not require surgery.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough has entered the concussion protocol according to the Royals, and he will continue with follow-ups as required for the next month at least. The left-handed hurler took a line drive off of his head in Sunday's outing against the Athletics and was placed on the 15-day injured list with his fractures. There's no timetable for his return to the mound, but it's obviously a positive development that Yarbrough won't require an operation.
May 8, 2023
Lands on IL after scary injury
Yarbrough (head) was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough took a line drive off the head in Sunday's contest with the Athletics, but he was fortunately able to walk off under his own power. That being said, he sustained facial fractures and will now be on the shelf for at least 15 days. The left-hander's true timetable to return is unknown considering the specific injuries he sustained.
May 7, 2023
Alert, testing underway
Manager Matt Quatraro said Yarbrough is alert, responsive and undergoing testing at the hospital after being struck in the face by a line drive Sunday against the A's, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was in the midst of his best start of the season when he was hit by a 106-mph line drive during the sixth inning, though he was encouragingly able to walk off the field under his own power. Yarbrough still picked up his first win of the season and allowed just one run on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks across 5.2 frames. He appears to have avoided a worst-case scenario, but it wouldn't be surprising if he requires a trip to the injured list.
May 3, 2023
Surrenders five runs in loss
Yarbrough (0-4) was handed the loss Tuesday against the Orioles, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five over 3.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough opened up the game by impressively striking out the first five hitters he faced. The trouble for him showed up in the fourth inning, however. Ryan Mountcastle launched a two-run homer to kick off the scoring after Adley Rutschman got on with a double. Following the home run, Yarbrough proceeded to allow the next six batters to reach via three singles and three walks which led to another three runs for the Orioles. He couldn't finish the frame and was replaced by Jose Cuas. Yarbrough has no fantasy value as a starting pitcher. He doesn't pitch deep enough into games and his numbers have not been good. He now owns a 7.40 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 12:7 K:BB over 20.2 innings and lines up to face the Athletics over the weekend.
Apr 27, 2023
Stuck with tough loss Wednesday
Yarbrough (0-3) took the loss Wednesday as the Royals were downed 2-0 by the Diamondbacks, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw wasn't fully stretched out and lasted only 77 pitches (51 strikes) in his first start of the season, but Yarbrough did a solid job even if he did get out-dueled by a red-hot Zac Gallen. Yarbrough figures to stick in the rotation at least until Daniel Lynch (shoulder) is ready to return, but his 6.35 ERA and 7:4 K:BB through 17 innings to begin the season don't hint at much fantasy upside. He'll try to last long enough to qualify for his first win of 2023 in his next outing, likely to come at home early next week against the Orioles.
Apr 26, 2023
Filling traditional starting role
Yarbrough is scheduled to start Wednesday's game in Arizona, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough entered the rotation as a replacement for the injured Kris Bubic (elbow) last weekend against the Angels, but he served as a bulk reliever behind opener Taylor Clarke in that contest. After Yarbrough covered four innings and tossing 52 pitches in relief against the Angels, the Royals are seemingly convinced that he's stretched out enough to handle a traditional starting role in his second turn through the rotation. During his time in the Rays organization, Yarbrough frequently worked as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen, so it's possible that the Royals could occasionally deploy him in that capacity if manager Matt Quatraro wants to pair the left-hander with a right-handed opener in certain matchups.
Apr 22, 2023
Suffers loss as bulk reliever
Yarbrough (0-2) took the loss Friday against the Angels. He allowed two runs on three hits without walking a batter and striking out one over four innings.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough entered the game in the third inning and hit Zach Neto before allowing a two-run shot to Chad Wallach. He settled down and only allowed one more baserunner while completing four innings. But those two runs were the only runs of the game, which saddled Yarbrough with the loss. Yarbrough has struggled in his first season in Kansas City, posting a 7.62 ERA in 13 innings.
Apr 20, 2023
Will be bulk reliever Friday
Yarbrough will serve as a bulk reliever Friday in the Royals' game against the Angels, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He'll be following opener Taylor Clarke. Yarbrough has been used as a traditional reliever to this point with the Royals, allowing nine runs with a 4:3 K:BB over nine innings.
Apr 10, 2023
Takes loss Sunday
Yarbrough (0-1) allowed three runs on three hits and struck out one over 1.1 innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough relieved Carlos Hernandez to get the last out of the seventh inning. Yarbrough stayed in for the eighth, but it unraveled on him quickly with a Wilmer Flores RBI double and a two-run home run from Michael Conforto. Through four appearances, Yarbrough has surrendered five runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts. He has a blown save and a hold. As long as the southpaw is a reliever, he won't have much fantasy appeal, especially since he lacks swing-and-miss stuff.
Apr 2, 2023
Works in relief Saturday
Yarbrough pitched 1.2 perfect relief innings without recording a strikeout in Saturday's 2-0 loss to the Twins.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough was slowed by a groin strain during spring training, so he hasn't had the ability to stretch out yet. He was efficient Saturday, throwing just 12 pitches (nine strikes) to get five outs. It appears Yarbrough could be headed for a multi-inning role out of the bullpen this season, which would sap most of his fairly limited fantasy value. Should Kris Bubic falter as the fifth starter, Yarbrough still has a path to the rotation if he can build up during the season.
Mar 22, 2023
Set for two-inning appearance
Yarbrough (groin) is scheduled to start and cover two innings in Wednesday's Cactus League game versus the White Sox, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After a three-week layoff from Cactus League action while he managed a groin strain, Yarbrough returned to the Royals' pitching schedule Sunday, working out of the bullpen to toss a scoreless inning in a 13-2 loss to the Diamondbacks. He'll increase his workload by another inning Wednesday, but Yarbrough still doesn't look as though he'll be on pace to handle a traditional starter's workload by the time Opening Day arrives. If his appearance Wednesday goes well, Yarbrough would likely then be cleared for one final 3-to-4-inning outing this spring, which should be enough for him to be a piggyback option or primary pitcher out of the bullpen when his first turn through the regular season rotation comes up.
Mar 17, 2023
Slated for Cactus appearance next
Yarbrough (groin) made it through a one-inning minor-league appearance without issue Thursday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He's set up for a two-inning Cactus League appearance next in what will be his first official spring outing since late February. Yarbrough has been battling a groin strain but doesn't appear to be in any danger of not being ready for Opening Day.
Mar 16, 2023
Throwing in minor-league game
Yarbrough (groin) will pitch in a minor-league game Thursday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
He had been slated to pitch in a game on the back fields Wednesday before that was washed out by rain. Yarbrough hasn't appeared in a Cactus League game since late February because of a groin injury, but the Royals don't anticipate it affecting his readiness for Opening Day.
Mar 15, 2023
Pitching in minor-league game
Yarbrough (groin) is scheduled to pitch in a minor-league game Wednesday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Though Yarbrough hasn't appeared in a Cactus League game since Feb. 27 while managing what the team has labeled as a minor groin strain, he'll be able to build up his pitch count Wednesday on the back fields at Royals camp. Assuming his groin checks out fine Wednesday, Yarbrough should have one or two more chances to pitch this spring as he looks to stake his claim to a spot in the Royals' Opening Day rotation. It's unclear if the Royals have plans to deploy Yarbrough as as a traditional starter or as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen, with the latter role being one he became accustomed to over his past five seasons with Tampa Bay.
Mar 4, 2023
Dealing with groin strain
Yarbrough is nursing a "slight" groin strain, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander will throw a bullpen Sunday and, if it goes well, he should be back in action shortly. Yarbrough is looking to begin his Royals tenure on a good note after posting a pedestrian 4.50 ERA in 80 innings for the Rays last season.
Dec 13, 2022
Heading to Kansas City
Yarbrough (oblique) agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal with the Royals on Tuesday, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The veteran left-hander was non-tendered by the Rays in November and will now continue his career with the Royals. Yarbrough often followed an opener and had a 4.02 ERA across his first three MLB campaigns, but Tampa Bay opted to cut him loose after he struggled the past two seasons. He had a 4.50 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 61:22 K:BB across 80 innings during 2022 and should slot into the back end of Kansas City's rotation.
Nov 15, 2022
DFA'd by Tampa Bay
Yarbrough (oblique) was designated for assignment Tuesday by the Rays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander finished the season on the injured list with an oblique strain, and it appears the Rays won't be tendering him a contract for 2023. Yarbrough was an effective rotation piece across his first three big-league seasons, but he struggled over the past two years and had a 4.50 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 61:22 K:BB in 80 frames during 2022.
Sep 23, 2022
Placed on IL
Yarbrough (oblique) was placed on the 15-day injured list Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
As expected, Yarbrough was placed on the IL after he suffered a right oblique strain in Thursday's win over the Blue Jays. The left-hander will now miss the remainder of the regular season and have a shot at returning early in the playoffs. Calvin Faucher was recalled from Triple-A Durham on Friday to replace Yarbrough on the active roster.
Sep 22, 2022
Likely heading to IL
Manager Kevin Cash said after Thursday's win over the Blue Jays that Yarbrough may have suffered a strained right oblique, and it's "highly likely" the left-hander will be placed on the 15-day injured list, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough followed an opener Thursday and allowed two runs in one inning before he exited with the injury, though he still ended up picking up his third win of the year. Assuming he moves to the injured list as expected, the 30-year-old will miss the rest of the regular season and will be eligible to return early in the playoffs.
Sep 22, 2022
Dealing with side injury
Yarbrough was diagnosed with right side discomfort after he left Thursday's game against the Blue Jays, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough pitched behind an opener and gave up two runs over one inning before he exited the contest. The severity of the injury remains unclear, but the possibility of an oblique injury looms large on the left-hander's availability for Tampa Bay's playoff push.

Departs with apparent injury
Yarbrough was removed from Thursday's game against the Blue Jays with an apparent injury, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander followed opener JT Chargois and allowed a pair of solo homers during the second inning, and he was lifted after initially taking the mound for the third frame. The 30-year-old should be considered day-to-day until more information is available on the injury.
Sep 22, 2022
Set for bulk-relief role
Yarbrough is expected to serve as a bulk reliever behind opener JT Chargois in Thursday's game against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Since being called up from Triple-A Durham on Aug. 30, all three of Yarbrough's appearances have come out of the bullpen on days the Rays have deployed openers. In those outings, Yarbrough has gone 1-0 with an 0.84 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 6:3 K:BB in 10.2 innings. The Rays may continue to deploy him as a bulk reliever so long as the arrangement keeps yielding quality results.
Sep 17, 2022
Pitching behind opener
Yarbrough is expected to serve as the Rays' bulk opener behind opener Shawn Armstrong during Saturday's game against the Rangers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough has been effective over two appearances in September, striking out four in 7.2 scoreless innings. Although Armstrong will begin Saturday's game on the mound, Yarbrough should have the chance to see plenty of work in relief.
Sep 12, 2022
Mops up Sunday
Yarbrough covered five scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Sunday's 10-4 loss to the Yankees. He struck out three and gave up two hits while issuing no walks.
ANALYSIS
Coming into the day, Yarbrough hadn't been expected to pitch, but the Rays needed him to mop up after starter Luis Patino recorded just four outs before departing. Even though Yarbrough was excellent in long relief, his performance didn't mean much since he entered the contest with the Rays already trailing by nine runs. Yarbrough will likely be deployed as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen or as a starter at some point during next weekend's series with the Rangers.
Sep 4, 2022
Working behind primary pitcher
Yarbrough is expected to serve as the Rays' bulk reliever behind opener Shawn Armstrong in Sunday's game against the Yankees at Tropicana Field, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough has yet to make an appearance for Tampa Bay since being called up from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday, but he'll essentially be filling the rotation spot vacated by Shane McClanahan (shoulder), who was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday. Though Armstrong is getting the starting nod Sunday, he hasn't worked more than three innings in any appearance this season and won't be asked to work deep into the series finale. As the Rays' bulk reliever, Yarbrough is the most likely pitcher to factor into any decision.
Aug 30, 2022
Called back up to majors
The Rays recalled Yarbrough from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Tampa Bay optioned Yarbrough to Triple-A on Saturday since the team planned to get by with a four-man rotation during its five-game week, but reliever Ryan Thompson's (triceps) move to the injured list Tuesday prompted the team to bring Yarbrough back from the minors earlier than anticipated. Yarbrough is expected to work out of the bullpen for the next few days before likely slotting back into the rotation when a fifth starter is next required Sept. 6 versus the Red Sox.
Aug 27, 2022
Sent down Saturday
Yarbrough was optioned to Triple-A Durham on Saturday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough struggled mightily during Friday's start against the Red Sox, giving up five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three in 3.1 innings to take his eighth loss of the season. Although he had been relatively productive over his two appearances ahead of Friday's start, he'll still be sent to the minors to make room for Garrett Cleavinger on the active roster. The team hasn't announced who will take Yarbrough's spot in the rotation, but it's possible that the club rolls with a four-man rotation for the time being since the Rays have two days off next week.
Aug 27, 2022
Handed eighth loss
Yarbrough (1-8) allowed five runs on eight hits over 3.1 innings Friday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough took over in the second frame after a scoreless start by JT Chargois and he gave up a run that inning. The 30-year-old lefty then gave up two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Yarbrough had tossed 8.1 scoreless frames over his previous two outings but his ERA now sits at 4.87 through 16 appearances. He'll likely take the mound at home against the Yankees next week.
Aug 26, 2022
Filling bulk-relief role
Yarbrough is scheduled to work behind opening pitcher JT Chargois in Friday's game in Boston, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough will be making his 16th appearance of the season Friday and his seventh while coming out of the bullpen. He's turned in similar results as a reliever (4.38 ERA, .357 wOBA in 24.2 innings) compared to a traditional starter's role (4.46 ERA, .323 wOBA in 40.1 innings), but he claimed his lone win of the season while working as a primary pitcher Aug. 15 against the Yankees.
Aug 21, 2022
Fans five in no-decision
Yarbrough allowed two unearned runs on three hits, a walk and a hit batsman while striking out five in 4.1 innings in a 3-2 win Sunday against Kansas City. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough held the Royals scoreless through the first four innings, scattering two doubles and a hit batsman. After retiring the first batter in the fifth, a walk, an error and a single led to an unearned run and the end of his outing. Another unearned run later scored on a sacrifice fly. The lefty had been treading on thin ice but has been much better of late, posting a 2.08 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 25:3 K:BB in 21.2 innings over his last five outings. His 28.7 percent strikeout rate in that span far exceeds his career rate of 19.4. His next appearance will likely be at the end of next week in Boston.
Aug 15, 2022
Picks up first win
Yarbrough (1-7) gave up three hits over four scoreless innings Monday, striking out six and earning a win over the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
After two scoreless frames from Jalen Beeks to start the game Yarbrough took the mound in the third and followed up with four shutout innings. Aside from a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning, he didn't face much danger as he threw 42 of 58 pitches for strikes. Over his last four outings, Yarbrough has allowed five runs through 17.1 frames, lowering his season ERA from 5.61 to 4.75. He'll likely get a home matchup with the Royals this weekend.
Aug 15, 2022
Following opener Monday
Yarborough will enter the game after opener Jalen Beeks on Monday against the Yankees, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough will follow Beeks for the second time in August after he pitched four innings of one-run ball versus the Blue Jays on Aug. 2. Yarbrough last faced the Yankees on May 26, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk while striking out five in a loss.
Aug 9, 2022
Wild in loss
Yarbrough (0-7) took the loss Tuesday in Milwaukee, allowing three runs on four hits, two hit batsmen and a walk while striking out five in 3.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough served the bulk-reliever role and entered the game in the second inning after Jimmy Yacabonis opened the game. In addition to his two hit batsman, the left-hander threw two wild pitches. Seven of the 16 batters he faced reached base safely. It has been an inconsistent year for the 30-year-old and, while his 5.08 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 40:15 K:BB in 56.2 innings leave something to be desired, the Rays continue to give him opportunities to eat innings. He's likely to pitch again early next week against the Yankees.
Aug 8, 2022
Sticks in bulk-relief role Tuesday
The Rays plan to deploy Yarbrough as a bulk reliever behind opener Jimmy Yacabonis in Tuesday's game in Milwaukee, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough will follow an opener for his second straight outing after the arrangement paid dividends his last time out Wednesday, when he came on behind lefty Jalen Beeks. Though he didn't factor into the decision, Yarbrough delivered four innings of one-run ball while allowing just two baserunners and striking out one. The southpaw will follow the right-handed Yacabonis this time around, with the righty/lefty combination to begin the game perhaps deterring the Brewers from fielding a righty-heavy lineup that might have more success against Yarbrough.
Aug 3, 2022
Sharp as bulk reliever
Yarbrough didn't factor into then decision in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Blue Jays, tossing four innings of relief and allowing one run on one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Jalen Beeks got the nod as the opener before Yarbrough entered the game in the second inning, and aside from a solo shot by Teoscar Hernandez in the fourth, the lefty shut down a potent Toronto offense completely. Yarbrough has been much improved since rejoining the Rays' staff just before the All-Star break, posting a 3.26 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 16:3 K:BB through 19.1 innings over his last four appearances (two starts), but he has yet to get into the win column since his return to the majors.
Aug 2, 2022
Following opener Wednesday
Yarbrough will pitch behind opener Jalen Beeks against the Blue Jays on Wednesday, Steve Carney of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough worked as a traditional starter his last time out and allowed one run across six innings in Baltimore, but he'll operate as a primary pitcher Wednesday. Overall it's been a struggle this year for the left-hander with a 5.11 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 34:13 K:BB across 49.1 innings.
Jul 29, 2022
Takes loss despite solid effort
Yarbrough (0-6) took the loss Thursday, allowing one run on four hits and zero walks over six innings against the Orioles. He struck out eight.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough set a season high with eight strikeouts and finished at least six innings while allowing one or fewer runs for the first time this season. However, the lefty didn't get any run support from the offense and suffered his sixth loss of the campaign. Yarbrough currently sports a 5.11 ERA with a 34:13 K:BB and is tentatively scheduled to pitch next Wednesday against the Blue Jays.
Jul 24, 2022
Takes fifth loss
Yarbrough (0-5) allowed three earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two across four innings to take the loss Saturday against the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough entered the game in the fifth inning, following Luis Patino. Yarbrough held the Royals scoreless through his first three frames of work but gave up a pair of homers in the eighth inning to account for all of the damage against him. Yarbrough has struggled across two appearances since being recalled by the Rays on July 16, allowing five earned runs, 11 hits and two walks across 9.1 innings.
Jul 17, 2022
Settles for no-decision
Yarbrough completed 5.1 innings against Baltimore on Saturday, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out four. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough was called up to prior to Saturday's start after spending most of June and the first half of July in the minors. The left-hander looked good against the Orioles, throwing 43 of 65 pitches for strikes and departing in the sixth inning in line for the victory. Though Tampa Bay's bullpen couldn't hold the lead, it was nonetheless a promising start for Yarbrough after he surrendered 10 runs over seven innings across two big-league appearances in June. Yarbrough could hold onto a rotation spot with Shane Baz (elbow) out until at least September, though Jeffrey Springs' (leg) imminent return could also push Yarbrough back to the minors or into the bullpen.
Jul 16, 2022
Recalled prior to start
Yarbrough was recalled from Triple-A Durham ahead of Saturday's start against the Orioles, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough was sent down at the beginning of July and posted a 4.15 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 8.2 innings over two minor-league outings following his demotion. The 30-year-old last started for the Rays on June 30 against the Blue Jays, and he allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk while failing to record a strikeout in 5.1 innings.
Jul 15, 2022
Tabbed to start Saturday
Yarbrough will be recalled from Triple-A Durham to start Saturday against Baltimore, Steve Carney of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was demoted to Durham after surrendering four runs over 5.1 innings during his last start for Tampa Bay on June 30, and he'll temporarily rejoin the big-league rotation again Saturday. Yarbrough has a 5.82 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 20:11 K:BB across 34 frames in the majors this season.
Jul 1, 2022
Optioned after poor outing
The Rays optioned Yarbrough to Triple-A Durham on Friday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The soft-throwing lefty yielded four runs on eight hits Thursday versus Toronto, which was his first appearance since June 5. Yarbrough and his 5.82 ERA through 34 innings will likely see more big-league innings this season.
Jun 30, 2022
Ineffective in return
Yarbrough (0-4) took the loss Thursday in Toronto, allowing four runs on eight hits, a walk and a hit batsman in 5.1 innings in relief. He did not record a strikeout.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough followed Matt Wisler's scoreless first inning by promptly giving up a single and a two-run homer to the first two batters he faced. He held the Blue Jays scoreless over the next four frames and then allowed another two-run homer in the seventh. It was his first appearance for the Rays after spending the better part of June playing for Triple-A Durham. Through 34 innings in the majors, he's posted a 5.82 ERA and 20:11 K:BB in a disappointing first half of the season.
Jun 30, 2022
Recalled to handle bulk innings
Yarbrough was recalled Thursday and is expected to fill a bulk relief role against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Jeffrey Springs had been scheduled to start but was placed on the family medical emergency list, so the team will instead turn to Yarbrough on short notice. Yarbrough is expected to handle the bulk innings behind opener Matt Wisler. Yarbrough was demoted in early June after opening the year with a career-high 5.65 ERA and career-low 15.0 percent strikeout rate through his first seven outings, and his 4.74 ERA in five Triple-A starts doesn't inspire much confidence.
Jun 7, 2022
Bound for Triple-A
The Rays optioned Yarbrough to Triple-A Durham on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough will lose his spot in the rotation and on the 26-man active roster after he was shelled for six earned runs while recording only five outs in his last start Sunday against the White Sox. With the lefty's ERA now sitting at 5.65 for the season, the Rays will send him to Triple-A with the hope that he can find some more consistency. Shane Baz (elbow) struck out 10 batters over 4.1 innings in his fourth rehab start with Triple-A Durham over the weekend and should be ready to return from the 60-day injured list when Yarbrough's next turn in the rotation comes up later this week during the Rays' series in Minnesota.
Jun 5, 2022
Roughed up in loss
Yarbrough (0-3) took the loss Sunday against the White Sox, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks in 1.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough was roughed up for four runs in the first inning and, after allowing two runs, was removed with two outs and the bases loaded in the second. It was the first time in 56 big-league starts that the lefty failed to complete two innings. The outing raised his ERA to 5.65 and WHIP to 1.53. His next start will likely be next weekend in Minnesota.
May 31, 2022
Quality start in loss
Yarbrough (0-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits and two hit batsmen while striking out three in 6.2 innings of a defeat Tuesday in Texas.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough gave up three runs in the fourth inning on homers by Corey Seager and Adolis Garcia. He nearly completed the seventh inning but hit a batter and allowed a bunt single with two outs before being removed. It was his longest outing of the season by more than an inning. While the lefty has demonstrated good control over his career, walking 2.0 batters per nine innings, he has hit five batters in 27 innings this season after leading the league in beanballs two seasons ago.
May 27, 2022
Punches out five
Yarbrough (0-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk while striking out five across 5.1 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Yankees.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough held the Yankees scoreless through five innings but struggled in his final frame. He allowed three of the first four hitters he faced to reach base and exited with runners on first and third -- both of which came around to score. It was the longest start of Yarbrough's season and his fourth consecutive outing having allowed two or fewer earned runs. Yarbrough has maintained a 3.98 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 17:8 K:BB across 20.1 frames on the season.
May 21, 2022
Lasts four innings Friday
Yarbrough allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks while striking out four in four innings during Friday's loss to the Orioles. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
The 30-year-old worked behind opener Jalen Beeks during Friday's matchup, but Yarbrough held the Orioles in check while throwing 43 of his 56 pitches for strikes as the primary pitcher. Yarbrough's first three appearances in 2022 came as a traditional starter, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him return to that role in future outings. The left-hander tentatively lines up to take the mound at home against the Yankees on Thursday.
May 19, 2022
Working behind opener Friday
Yarbrough is set to serve as a bulk reliever behind opener Jalen Beeks in Friday's game against the Orioles in Baltimore, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Even though Yarbrough has pitched well in his last two starts -- he allowed one run on six hits and four walks in 8.2 innings between the outings -- the 30-year-old has yet to record his first win of the season. Yarbrough would already have been well positioned to factor into the decision if he operated as a traditional starter against the 14-24 Orioles, but the Rays' choice to deploy him behind an opener should only increase his odds of capturing his first win. Beeks is expected to work no more than 2-to-3 innings before giving way to Yarbrough, who could end up pitching the rest of the game if he's able to retire hitters efficiently.
May 8, 2022
Five scoreless innings
Yarbrough struck out four in five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and a walk in a 2-1 loss Sunday in Seattle. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough scattered four singles and pitched efficiently, tallying 68 pitches through the five frames. It was his first start and second appearance of the season after beginning the campaign on the injured list (groin). The start was vastly different from his first outing when he allowed five runs over 2.1 innings. His next appearance will likely be next weekend against Toronto and it's not yet known if he'll serve as the starter or follow an opener.
May 8, 2022
Working as traditional starter
Yarbrough will start Sunday's game against the Mariners, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough was originally expected to follow J.P. Feyereisen in a bulk reliever role, but he will now serve as a traditional starter. Yarbrough struggled in his opening appearance of the season, surrendering five earned runs on six hits and three walks across 2.1 frames Tuesday against Oakland.
May 8, 2022
Following opener Sunday
Yarbrough will serve as the bulk reliever Sunday against the Mariners, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
J.P. Feyereisen will open the game and likely cover the first inning or two. Yarbrough will follow him into the contest and should pitch several frames, if effective. Yarbrough made his season debut with the club Tuesday and surrendered five runs on six hits and three walks across 2.1 frames.
May 4, 2022
Struggles in return
Yarbrough got a no-decision during Tuesday's 10-7 win over Oakland, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough got off to rough start in his 2022 debut by permitting six baserunners and all five runs in the first inning and didn't get much better thereafter, surrendering two baserunners in the second and third though none came around to score. He was let off the hook when Tampa Bay tied the game in the ninth and will look to get back on track in his next start, likely to come this weekend against Seattle.
May 3, 2022
Activated for Tuesday's start
Yarbrough (groin) was activated from the 10-day injured list and is starting Tuesday against the Athletics, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander is back from the injured list as expected and will make his season debut after landing on the shelf with a groin injury April 10. Yarbrough was built up to 59 pitches in his final rehab start with Triple-A Durham last week, so he'll likely be limited to around 70-to-80 pitches Tuesday.
May 3, 2022
Rejoining rotation Tuesday
Rays manager Kevin Cash confirmed Yarbrough (groin) will be activated from the 10-day injured list to start Tuesday's game in Oakland, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough will be making his 2022 debut for the Rays, as he was added to the injured list in the first week of the season when he experienced tightness in his left groin during a pre-start bullpen session. He's since made two rehab starts at Triple-A Durham, covering 2.2 innings and throwing 59 pitches in his most recent outing April 28. Yarbrough will most likely be capped at around 70-to-80 pitches Tuesday, though he could work long enough to qualify for the win against a 10-13 Athletics squad.
Apr 29, 2022
Trending toward return
The Rays are leaning toward having Yarbrough (groin) join the major-league club for his next turn through the rotation, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough threw 59 pitches at Triple-A Durham on Thursday and felt good afterward. While the Rays haven't made a firm decision regarding his next steps, it's certainly possible that he returns to the majors for his next start, which tentatively lines up for Tuesday in Oakland. The southpaw likely wouldn't be built up to a full workload if he's ultimately activated early next week, but he appears to be nearly back to full health.
Apr 28, 2022
Throws 59 pitches in rehab outing
Yarbrough (groin) allowed two runs (none earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out four across 2.2 innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Durham on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough threw 59 pitches and looked sharper in his second rehab appearance with Durham. After walking four of the six batters he faced in his first outing, Yarbrough still struggled with his control but was able to work much deeper into the game. It's unclear if this performance will be enough for Yarbrough to be activated, or if he will need an additional outing.
Apr 26, 2022
Needs another rehab start
Yarbrough (groin) will make a second rehab start for Triple-A Durham on Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough made the Opening Day roster but hit the injured list with a groin strain prior to making his season debut. He struggled significantly during his first rehab start Saturday, walking four and allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit while retiring just a single batter. He'll need at least one more outing to demonstrate that he's ready to return before the Rays feel comfortable activating him.
Apr 25, 2022
No control in rehab outing
Yarbrough (groin) retired only one of the six batters he faced Saturday in his rehab start with Triple-A Durham, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit four walks during the 27-pitch appearance.
ANALYSIS
Since he was placed on the 10-day injured list April 11 with a left groin injury, Yarbrough was expected to need only one rehab appearance before slotting back into the Tampa Bay rotation. However, after Yarbrough's rough showing for Durham in which he threw only 10 of his 27 pitches for strikes, the Rays will likely want to see him right the ship in the minors before activating him. The Rays will need to break in a fifth starter for their home series with the Twins over the weekend, and it's possible the team opts for a bullpen game that day to allow Yarbrough to iron things out at Triple-A.
Apr 21, 2022
Set for rehab outing
Yarbrough (groin) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham over the weekend, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough threw a successful bullpen session Tuesday, but he will need some additional work prior to being activated. His outing with Triple-A Durham has not been set for an exact date, though Yarbrough would have the chance to enter the big-league rotation early as April 27 if the team keeps him on regular rest.
Apr 18, 2022
Nearing bullpen session
Yarbrough (groin) could throw a bullpen session Monday or Tuesday, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough will need to spend more than the minimum of 10 days on the injured list due to his groin injury, but it's encouraging that he'll be able to resume mound work soon. The southpaw won't pitch during the Rays' road series against the Cubs, but it's possible he'll be able to rejoin the rotation sometime during the weekend series against the Red Sox in Tampa Bay. Yarbrough's injury isn't regarded as particularly serious, but Cash said the team is exercising caution to prevent against a more significant issue.
Apr 17, 2022
Yet to resume mound work
Yarbrough (groin) threw from 150 feet on flat ground Sunday and has yet to throw off a mound since being placed on the injured list last week, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The 30-year-old was only expected to miss one start after landing on the shelf April 11, but that no longer appears to be the case given he has yet to throw off a mound. Yarbrough apparently hasn't suffered a setback, and manager Kevin Cash hopes the lefty can get back on the mound within the next couple days.
Apr 11, 2022
Short absence expected
Yarbrough (groin) isn't expected to miss more than one start during his stay on the injured list, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough's season debut was pushed back slightly after he hit the injured list with a groin issue Monday, but both he and the Rays believe he won't miss much time. Ryan Thompson was recalled in a corresponding move, though it's Tommy Romero who's expected to temporarily take his place in the rotation.
Apr 11, 2022
Officially moved to IL
The Rays placed Yarbrough (groin) on the 10-day injured list Monday.
ANALYSIS
Tampa Bay recalled reliever Ryan Thompson from Triple-A Durham to serve as a temporarily replacement on the 28-man active roster for Yarbrough, who injured his left groin at some point leading up to his scheduled start for Tuesday against the Athletics. Yarbrough's 2022 debut will thus be put on hold, and his absence from the rotation will likely open up a starting role for prospect Tommy Romero. Tampa Bay added Romero to its taxi squad Monday, but the team may wait until Tuesday before formally adding him to the roster and having him start later that day.
Apr 10, 2022
Heading to injured list
Yarbrough is dealing with a minor groin injury and will be placed on the 10-day injured list as a precautionary measure, John Romano of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw hadn't yet made his 2022 debut and will have to wait to do so as a result of his injury. Tommy Romero will be recalled from Triple-A Durham to fill in while Yarbrough is sidelined. It's not yet clear whether the 30-year-old Yarbrough will be forced to spend more than the minimum of 10 days on the shelf.
Mar 22, 2022
Signs deal before arbitration
Yarbrough and the Rays avoided arbitration Tuesday, agreeing to terms on a one-year, $3.85 million deal, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough gets a raise of over $1.5 million despite the fact that he's coming off the worst season of his career. In 155 innings, he struck out a career-low 17.9 percent of opposing batters and generated groundballs at a career-low 35.8 percent clip, leading to a career-high 5.11 ERA.
Oct 7, 2021
Not included on ALDS roster
Yarbrough isn't on the Rays' ALDS roster, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough will be available in an emergency situation as part of the team's taxi squad, but he was a notable exclusion from the roster following a slow finish to the season. The southpaw posted a 9.00 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 21 innings across his final five starts of the year, and it's not yet clear whether he'll return if the Rays advance to the ALCS.
Sep 30, 2021
Gives up decisive three-run blast
Yarbrough (9-7) surrendered three runs on four hits and a walk over 4.2 innings to take the loss Thursday against Houston. He also had three strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
Pitching behind opener Collin McHugh, Yarbrough served up a three-run homer to Carlos Correa in the fourth inning that gave the Astros a 3-0 lead. It continued a tough September for Yarbrough, who has been touched up for a 9.00 ERA and 29 hits over 21 innings in his five appearances (two starts) during the month.
Sep 29, 2021
Following opener Thursday
Yarbrough is scheduled to pitch behind opener Collin McHugh at Houston on Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough followed an opener his last time out and will do so again Thursday for the ninth time this season. The left-hander has struggled over 11 starts since the All-Star break with a 6.50 ERA, though he's given up only four runs on seven hits with an 8:0 K:BB across 12 frames in his past two outings.
Sep 24, 2021
Fires six shutout frames
Yarbrough (9-6) allowed two hits over six scoreless innings Friday, striking out four and earning a win over the Marlins.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough was terrific in Friday's win, allowing just one batter to reach scoring position in his scoreless outing. He took the mound in the second inning after David Robertson opened the game with a shutout frame. Over his previous three appearances, Yarbrough was hammered for 18 runs over 10.1 innings and he now owns a 5.09 ERA. The 29-year-old southpaw is projected to take the mound in Houston next week.

Working behind opener
Yarbrough will pitch behind opener David Robertson in Friday's series opener against the Marlins, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough has struggled in his last three appearances and has posted a 15.68 ERA and 2.52 WHIP in 10.1 innings during that time, and he'll be utilized as a primary pitcher against Miami. The southpaw was able to get out of trouble early in his last start, so he'll attempt to replicate his early success behind an opener Friday.

Soothes concerns with latest start
Yarbrough, who took his sixth loss against the Tigers on Saturday while giving up four earned runs on five hits over six innings and recording four strikeouts, nevertheless impressed manager Kevin Cash with the way he overcame early adversity in the outing, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. "The frustration certainly could have mounted the way the last couple of games have gone, but he did a good job keeping his composure, keeping us in the ballgame," Cash said. "He got the cutter going. He mixed in some more
ANALYSIS
The big blast Cash alluded to came off the bat of Jeimer Candelario, who put Yarbrough in an early hole after the left-hander came in having given up seven earned runs apiece in each of his prior two starts. Yarbrough refused to go into the tank mentally, however, even after Dustin Garneau subsequently tagged him with a solo shot to lead off the second inning. Yarbrough responded by retiring 15 of the next 16 batters, including the final 13, sending him into his next scheduled start against the Marlins either Friday or Saturday with some confidence.

Hammered by Jays
Yarbrough (8-5) took the loss in relief Monday, coughing up seven runs on 10 hits and a walk in 2.1 innings as the Rays were downed 8-1 by the Blue Jays. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw entered the game after Collin McHugh in the third inning, and while Yarbrough was able to wriggle out of the jam McHugh left for him, he didn't have the same luck in the fourth or fifth frames. Yarbrough needed 77 pitches (46 strikes) to record only seven outs, and he's been tagged for seven earned runs in back-to-back outings while giving up at least five in five of nine appearances since the All-Star break. His 7.50 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 27:9 K:BB through 42 innings in the second half should keep him far away from active fantasy rosters down the stretch.

Filling bulk-relief role
Yarbrough is expected to work as a bulk reliever behind opener Collin McHugh in Sunday's game against the Blue Jays in Toronto, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
After Yarbrough was pummeled for seven runs over two innings while working as a traditional starter his last time out Sept. 6 in Boston, manager Kevin Cash will see if the lefty can deliver better results while working out of the bullpen. Though he won't necessarily be the first pitcher out of the bullpen once McHugh exits, Yarbrough projects to cover the most innings of any Rays arm and is thus the most likely candidate to factor into any decision.
Sep 6, 2021
Chased after two innings
Yarbrough allowed seven runs on eight hits and two walks over two innings in Monday's win over Boston. He struck out one batter and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Despite the dreadful outing, Yarbrough escaped without the loss after the Rays' impressive comeback. Nearly all the damage against him came in the second frame where he allowed six runs, including three RBI doubles. The 29-year-old southpaw had allowed just four runs over 15 innings (2.40 ERA) in his previous three starts. Yarbrough will carry a 4.90 ERA into his projected start in Toronto next week.

Limits Red sox to two runs in win
Yarbrough (8-4) allowed two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out three over six innings in a win over the Red Sox on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough didn't start off too well after allowing a first-inning run but would settle in thereafter and hold the Red Sox scoreless until Kyle Schwarber took him deep in the sixth for a solo home run. Tuesday's performance was a major relief for the southpaw, as he's struggled mightily against the division rivals this season, allowing 16 earned runs on 18 hits over 12 innings of work. Tuesday marked the third time in his last four starts Yarbrough managed to not issue a walk and it's just the second time since the beginning of July he's managed to pitch at least six innings. The 29-year-old now owns a 4.50 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 104:23 K:BB over 134 innings. He lines up for a rematch against the Red Sox his next time out and will look to help keep the Rays rolling along in September after they finished with the best record in July and August.
Aug 30, 2021
Confirmed as Tuesday's starter
Yarbrough will start Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The Rays hadn't yet announced a starter for the second game of their series against Boston. Yarbrough has struggled considerably in three starts against the Red Sox this season, allowing 16 earned runs on 18 hits, four of which have been home runs, in 12 innings.
Aug 26, 2021
Surprising short outing
Yarbrough allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out none across four innings Wednesday against the Phillies. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Despite not missing many bats, Yarbrough wasn't hit hard as he didn't allow any extra-base hits. His performance made it surprising that he was pulled after only 55 pitches, especially considering he had thrown 70 and completed five innings in his previous outing. Assuming he is allowed to work deeper into his next appearance, Yarbrough has shown some positive signs in effectiveness by not allowing any home runs across nine frames since being activated from the injured list Aug. 18. For the season, he has a 4.57 ERA with a 101:23 K:BB across 128 innings.
Aug 19, 2021
Excels in return from IL
Yarbrough (7-4) picked up the win Wednesday in the Rays' 8-4 win over the Orioles after tossing five scoreless frames and permitting one hit and no walks while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
Making his return from the COVID-19 injured list, Yarbrough worked as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen behind Louis Head, and the arrangement proved to be favorable. According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Yarbrough said prior to being activated that he didn't feel 100 percent after he contracted the virus despite being vaccinated, but that didn't prevent the southpaw from excelling in his first game back. Yarbrough tossed 70 pitches Wednesday and should be able to push his count closer to the 80-to-90 range in his next outing, regardless of whether he's deployed as a traditional starter or bulk reliever.
Aug 18, 2021
Reinstated from injured list
Yarbrough was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough's activation was expected since he'll serve as the primary pitcher behind opener Louis Head in Wednesday's game against the Orioles. The southpaw spent just over a week on the COVID-19 IL.
Aug 17, 2021
Following opener Wednesday
Yarbrough (undisclosed) will be activated from the COVID-19 injured list and serve as the bulk pitcher Wednesday against the Orioles, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough landed on the COVID-19 IL last week and will rejoin the Rays on Wednesday. The left-hander won't start but will work as the primary pitcher while Louis Head serves as the opener.
Aug 17, 2021
Set to return Wednesday
Manager Kevin Cash announced that Yarbrough will be activated from the COVID-19 injured list to pitch Wednesday against the Orioles, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports. The club has not determined whether he will start or serve as a bulk reliever.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough was placed on the COVID-19 list Aug. 10, though it never became clear if he tested positive for the virus. The southpaw is set to be activated Wednesday, and he should be in line to log the bulk of the innings, whether it's to start the game or in relief of an opener. Yarbrough's activation seems likely to push Shane McClanahan's start to Thursday.
Aug 10, 2021
Placed on COVD-19 IL
Yarbrough (undisclosed) was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Tuesday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
ANALYSIS
It's not yet known if the left-hander has tested positive for the virus or if he was a close contact to someone who did. In either case, he won't pitch Wednesday as previously scheduled, and until further update is provided, it's unclear how long he'll be out.
Aug 7, 2021
Gives up five runs in no-decision
Yarbrough didn't factor into the decision Friday against the Orioles after allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out four across five innings.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough has kept the walks in check all season long and hasn't handed more than two free passes in any outing thus far, but the excellent control he has displayed all year long hasn't been enough of late. He has given up five or more runs in three of his last four starts and owns a 5.51 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP across six starts since the beginning of July, a span in which he's also gone 2-1 with three straight no-decisions.
Aug 1, 2021
Stumbles to no-decision Saturday
Yarbrough didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 9-5 win over the Red Sox, giving up five runs on four hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four.
ANALYSIS
Two-run shots by Xander Bogaerts in the first inning and Bobby Dalbec in the fifth accounted for most of the damage off Yarbrough. The southpaw hadn't served up multiple homers in a start since June 3, but he's allowed a steady rain of balls to fall into the seats this season -- his 1.42 HR/9 is by far a career-worst performance in that category. Yarbrough will carry a 4.58 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 94:21 K:BB through 114 innings into his next outing.
Jul 20, 2021
Bodied by Baltimore
Yarbrough (6-4) took the loss Monday as the Rays dropped a 6-1 decision to the Orioles, coughing up six runs on eight hits and two walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Baltimore didn't hit the southpaw particularly hard, as a first-inning double by Ryan Mountcastle was the only extra-base hit Yarbrough gave up, but given how little run support he got he had no margin for error. Yarbrough has lasted six innings only once in his last five outings, and on the season he carries a 4.59 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 84:19 K:BB through 102 frames.
Jul 10, 2021
Picks up win in decent outing
Yabrough (6-3) earned the win Saturday against the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on five hits over five innings of work while striking out four and walking two.
ANALYSIS
It was another solid but unspectacular outing for Yarbrough, who dragged his ERA down negligibly from 4.34 to 4.30. He tossed a pair of scoreless innings before giving up a two-run homer to Marcus Semien in the third, but he settled down to throw two more scoreless frames before his day was done. His next start will come sometime after the All-Star break.
Jul 5, 2021
Effective in tough matchup
Yarbrough (5-3) secured the win in a victory over the Blue Jays on Sunday, allowing an earned run on four hits while recording five strikeouts over five innings.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was able to put together a second consecutive strong outing after a pair of rocky starts where he allowed a combined 12 earned runs over 8.1 innings to the White Sox and Red Sox. Yarbrough was able to tame a dangerous Blue Jays lineup in its home park, working around a solo home run by Randal Grichuk and allowing only one other extra-base hit during his time on the mound. Yarbrough has now secured a win in each of his last four decisions and will look to extend that favorable streak in a rematch with Toronto at Tropicana Field on Friday or Saturday.
Jun 27, 2021
Tosses six innings in no-decision
Yarbrough allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over six innings in Sunday's loss to the Angels. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough coughed up RBI base hits in the fourth and sixth innings, including an RBI double by Shohei Ohtani. Despite not getting a win, it was his first quality start in his last three outings after giving up five runs in each of his previous two. He lowered his ERA to 4.48 through 86.1 innings. Yarbrough is lined up to face the Blue Jays on the road next weekend.
Jun 23, 2021
Falters as bulk reliever
Yarbrough covered two innings as a primary pitcher and didn't factor into the decision Tuesday in the Rays' 9-5 loss to the Red Sox in 11 innings. He gave up five runs on five hits and a walk while striking out two.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough looked in line to take his first loss since April 30 after exiting with a 5-2 lead, but the Rays offense rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth before Boston broke the tie in extras. The southpaw has now been blitzed for 10 runs between his last two outings, raising his season ERA from 3.88 to 4.59. Yarbrough isn't in danger of losing his spot in the rotation, but the Rays could continue to deploy him behind an opener when his next turn comes up in an attempt to coax better results out of the 29-year-old.
Jun 21, 2021
Pitching behind opener
Yarbrough will work as a primary pitcher behind opener Andrew Kittredge in Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough will function as a bulk reliever for the fifth time this season, with his other 10 appearances coming in a traditional starting role. Entering the game out of the bullpen could result in Yarbrough's innings count being slightly lower, but it should increase his chances of factoring into any decision. In his prior four appearances as a bulk reliever, Yarbrough has allowed two runs on 12 hits and five walks while striking out 17 over 18 innings.
Jun 16, 2021
Knocked around in no-decision
Yarbrough allowed seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits while walking one and striking out five in 6.1 innings of Wednesday's 8-7 loss to the White Sox. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
It was a rough outing for the lefty, who had allowed no more than three earned runs in seven consecutive starts before Wednesday. Yarbrough, now with a 3.91 ERA on the season, holds even greater importance in the Rays' rotation now that Tyler Glasnow (elbow) is looking at an extended absence. He's projected to make his next start Tuesday against the Red Sox, who shelled him for nine runs (six earned) on April 7.
Jun 11, 2021
Fans six in win
Yarbrough (4-3) allowed two unearned runs on three hits over six innings Friday, striking out six and earning a win over the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
The only runs to score on Yarbrough came on a two-run shot by Trey Mancini in the third inning but they weren't marked as earned runs on his final line. He lowered his season ERA to 3.63 and moved above .500 for the first time this year. The 29-year-old southpaw hasn't taken a loss since April 30 and now owns a 59:10 K:BB. Yarbrough is lined up to face the White Sox in Chicago next week.
Jun 3, 2021
Tosses CG against Yankees
Yarbrough (3-3) allowed two runs on six hits and no walks while striking out six in nine innings to earn the win against the Yankees on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough earned his first win in nearly a month during Thursday's outing, and he also ended the Rays' five-year streak without a complete game. The southpaw gave up solo home runs in the third and seventh innings against New York, but he got plenty of run support from Tampa Bay's offense. Yarbrough has now posted a 3.95 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 66 innings across 12 appearances this year, and he tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Nationals on Wednesday.
May 29, 2021
Fans eight over 4.1 frames
Yarbrough had eight strikeouts and allowed two runs on three hits across 4.1 innings during Saturday's 5-3 win versus Philadelphia. He had two walks and didn't factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old kept the Phillies off the board until Ronald Torreyes' two-RBI double with the bases loaded during the fifth inning, which brought an end to the left-hander's afternoon. Yarbrough has a 4.26 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 47:12 K:BB over 57 innings this season.
May 24, 2021
Surrenders three in no-decision
Yarbrough allowed three runs on three hits while striking out four over six innings Monday against the Blue Jays. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough received five runs of support from his offense in the first inning, but he was unable to secure the victory. He allowed one run in the second inning and two in the fourth, and the bullpen would let Toronto tie the game in the eighth, resulting in the no-decision. Yarbrough owns a 4.27 ERA with a 35:10 K:BB across 52.2 frames in 2021.
May 19, 2021
Lucky to post quality start
Yarbrough gave up six runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks while fanning two across six innings Wednesday against the Orioles. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough can consider himself to have posted his first quality start of the campaign, as half of the runs he gave up were unearned. Between poor outings and short starts, the 29-year-old left-hander has been unable to become a reliable presence in the rotation for the Rays and owns a 2-3 record with a 4.24 ERA through nine starts, though that figure would be a career-worst mark for him. His next chance to start is scheduled for next Monday at Toronto.
May 12, 2021
Working behind opener
Yarbrough will work as the Rays' primary pitcher behind opener Collin McHugh in Wednesday's game against the Yankees, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough will work behind an opener for the fourth time in his last five appearances, as he's had a somewhat inconsistent start to the season. The left-hander has fared slightly better as a primary pitcher, and he's posted a 3.05 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 20.2 innings across his last four outings.
May 8, 2021
Reinstated from COVID-19 IL
Yarbrough (illness) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Saturday, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough was dealing with vaccine side effects Friday, but he'll return to the active roster just one day later. The southpaw tentatively lines up to start at home against the Yankees on Tuesday, and he should be able to make his next start.
May 7, 2021
Managing vaccine side effects
Yarbrough was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Friday due to side effects from the vaccine, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough tentatively lines up to make his next start Tuesday, and he'll be eligible to return from the injured list as soon as his side effects subside. Kevan Smith was called up to serve as catching depth after Francisco Mejia (ribs) was scratched from Friday's lineup.
May 6, 2021
Picks up win Wednesday
Yarbrough (2-3) earned the win against the Angels on Wednesday, pitching four innings and allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough worked as the primary pitcher in the contest, entering the game in the third inning following a pair of scoreless frames by opener Andrew Kittredge. Yarbrough tossed 65 pitches in his four innings, throwing 40 for strikes and limiting Los Angeles to a long third-inning run. The outing was the left-hander's shortest of the campaign, as he had tossed at least five frames in each of his previous six appearances. He'll carry a 4.58 ERA and 29:8 K:BB into his next appearance, though it's unclear whether that will again come as a primary pitcher or if he'll switch back to a traditional starting role.
May 5, 2021
Working behind opener
Yarbrough will work as the Rays' primary pitcher behind opener Andrew Kittredge in Wednesday's game against the Angels, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough has operated as a traditional starter in four of his first six starts, but he'll be following an opener for the third time in his last four turns through the rotation. He's enjoyed far better results in his two outings as a primary pitcher, limiting opposing batters to a .411 OPS while going 1-0 with 10 strikeouts across 10.2 innings.
May 1, 2021
Shaky in third loss
Yarbrough (1-3) took the loss Friday as the Rays fell 9-2 to the Astros, giving up five runs on nine hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
The lefty lasted 103 pitches (71 strikes) but wasn't particularly effective, allowing runs to cross the plate in the first, third and fourth innings. Yarbrough now has a 4.86 ERA and 26:6 K:BB through 33.1 innings, and with higher-upside arms like Shane McClanahan and Luis Patino now pushing for work, Yarbrough isn't guaranteed to hang onto his rotation/bulk relief spot if he doesn't turn things around.
Apr 25, 2021
Fans six in no-decision
Yarbrough served as a bulk-inning reliever, pitching 5.2 scoreless innings on three hits and one walk while striking out six in the win Saturday over the Blue Jays. He did not factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough once again entered the game as a bulk-inning reliever after Brent Honeywell pitched the first inning. Yarbrough dealt 5.2 scoreless innings and six strikeouts for his best performance of the season. The 29-year-old didn't receive the win, but he kept the Rays in the game for what led to the win. He's pitched much better in 10.2 innings as a bulk-inning reliever with a 0.88 ERA compared to 16.2 innings as a traditional starter with a 6.48 ERA.
Apr 23, 2021
Working behind opener
Yarbrough will serve as a bulk reliever behind opener Brent Honeywell in Saturday's game against the Blue Jays, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough made his first three appearances as a traditional starter, but he'll work behind an opener for a second consecutive outing Saturday. The southpaw has posted a 5.40 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 21.2 innings across his first four appearances of the year.
Apr 18, 2021
Enters win column
Yarbrough (1-2) allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out four in five innings to earn the win against the Yankees on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough served as the primary pitcher behind Andrew Kittredge in Sunday's series finale in New York after he had allowed six runs in each of his last two starts. The left-hander was much more effective against the Yankees, with the only run he allowed coming via a Giancarlo Stanton home run in the bottom of the second inning. Yarbrough has recorded a 5.40 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 21.2 innings across his first four outings of the season. He lines up to make his next start at home against the Blue Jays on Saturday.
Apr 18, 2021
Working behind opener
Yarbrough is slated to serve as a bulk reliever behind opener Andrew Kittredge in Sunday's game against the Yankees, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports.
ANALYSIS
Each of Yarbrough's three appearances this season have come as a traditional starter, but the lefty is no stranger to working behind an opener. The opener arrangement will likely allow for Yarbrough to work deeper into the contest than he would if he were on the hill in the first inning, which should increase his chances of coming away with a win if he exits the contest with Tampa Bay in the lead.
Apr 13, 2021
Hit hard in loss
Yarbrough (0-2) was charged with the loss Tuesday against the Rangers after surrendering six runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out six across six innings.
ANALYSIS
Although Yarbrough was able to miss a decent number of bats while avoiding any long ball damage, the Rangers found their way onto the scoreboard. They got to Yarbrough early with an RBI single from Joey Gallo in the first inning, followed by back-to-back RBI doubles by Nick Solak and Charlie Culberson in the fourth and an RBI single by Isiah Kiner-Falefa in the sixth. The poor performance was the second in a row for the 29-year-old, who remains winless with a 6.48 ERA. Next up, Yarbrough faces a tough road matchup Sunday against the Yankees.
Apr 7, 2021
Takes loss against Boston
Yarbrough (0-1) took the loss Wednesday against the Red Sox after allowing six runs on nine hits and a walk while fanning two across five innings.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough opened the season with a strong performance against the Marlins, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings while striking out three, but he wasn't able to repeat such feat against the Red Sox and barely managed to complete five innings. Yarbrough pitched three scoreless innings but the wheels came off in the fourth, and he was never able to bounce back since then, departing the contest after a six-run fifth inning. He will attempt to bounce back in his upcoming start, scheduled for April 13 at home against the Rangers.
Apr 3, 2021
Shuts down Marlins in Friday's win
Yarbrough didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 6-4 win over the Marlins, scattering four hits over 5.2 scoreless innings while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw dazzled through 65 pitches (41 strikes) but wasn't rewarded with a win for his efforts, as all the scoring in the game came off the bullpens. Yarbrough is expected to transition away from his hybrid role this season and be used exclusively as a traditional starter, but Friday's usage suggests he still won't be allowed to face a batter for a third time in a game very often. He'll face the Red Sox on the road Wednesday in his next scheduled starts.
Mar 30, 2021
Bounces back in final spring start
Yarbrough allowed two earned runs on three hits over 5.1 innings in a Grapefruit League win over Atlanta on Sunday. He struck out four and also hit a batter.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander accomplished his solid line against a lineup full of Atlanta regulars, turning in a much better performance than when he faced them a week earlier. Yarbrough finished Grapefruit League play allowing two runs or less in three of his four trips to the mound and posted an impressive 11:2 K:BB across 13.2 innings.
Mar 23, 2021
No concerns despite rocky outing
Yarbrough retains plenty of manager Kevin Cash's confidence, despite a rocky third spring start against Atlanta, due to his ability to consistently induce weak contact with an eclectic repertoire, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. "The reason Yarbs is good is because his stuff's good. He can really pitch," Cash said. "His changeup's been a weapon that he can throw at any point, any count, [and] I always feel like the cutter has been the equalizer for him to the right-handed hitter."
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough had a rollercoaster of a start Sunday against Atlanta's regulars, retiring the first and last four batters he faced but also allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits and a walk over four innings while getting pulled twice by Cash. However, Yarbrough had mostly breezed through his first two spring starts, owns a combined 28-16 record and 3.94 ERA over the last three seasons and has generated the lowest average exit velocity (84.6 mph) of any pitcher with at least 300 innings since 2018.
Mar 17, 2021
Smooth in second start
Yarbrough fired three scoreless innings in a Grapefruit League win over the Orioles on Tuesday, allowing three hits and no walks, hitting a batter and recording two strikeouts.
ANALYSIS
That's two scoreless efforts (4.1 total innings) for Yarbrough to start Grapefruit League play, solidifying his projected No. 2 starter role. Yarbrough has largely displayed his usual superior control early this spring save for his one plunking Tuesday, and he'll look to thrive in what his first opportunity to enter a season with no ambiguity surrounding his rotation status.
Mar 6, 2021
Crisp in spring debut
Yarbrough threw 16 pitches over his one inning during his Grapefruit League debut against the Twins on Thursday and impressed manager Kevin Cash with his performance, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. "Nice to see one of our guys start the buildup," Cash said. "He was kidding that he walked a guy -- normally doesn't walk too many guys -- so I'm sure he's got plenty of reps to fine-tune that. But he looks really crisp."
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough has been a valued jack-of-all-trades piece for Cash over the last three seasons, serving as everything from conventional starter and reliever to an opener for bullpen games. The left-hander has deftly handled all roles he's been asked to fill with efficacy, posting a 28-16 record over that span while producing a pair of sub-4.00 ERAs. Yarbrough projects to open the season as high as the No. 2 slot in the rotation behind ace Tyler Glasnow.

Loses arbitration case
Yarbrough has lost his arbitration case against the Rays and will earn $2.3 million in 2021, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough had filed at $3.1 million during his arbitration case, but he'll settle for $2.3 million in 2021 after losing his hearing. The southpaw should take on a more prominent role in the Rays' rotation this year after Blake Snell was traded to the Padres during the offseason. Yarbrough made 11 appearances (nine starts) in 2020, posting a 3.56 ERA and 1.19 WHIP over 55.2 innings during that time.
Oct 25, 2020
Lasts 3.1 frames in Game 4
Yarbrough didn't factor in the decision in Game 4 of the World Series against the Rays on Saturday after allowing two runs on five hits with one strikeout and one walk across 3.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander's only real trouble came via solo homers from Corey Seager and Justin Turner, but he generated only five swinging strikes on 69 pitches and was unable to make it through the fourth inning. Yarbrough has a 3.86 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 7:4 K:BB over 14 innings during the 2020 playoffs, and he may be available out of the bullpen on two days rest for Game 6 and a potential Game 7.
Oct 24, 2020
Starting Game 4
Yarbrough will start Game 4 of the World Series against the Dodgers on Saturday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough has been a starter in just one of his three postseason outings after starting in nine of his 11 appearances during the season. He's allowed just four runs in 10.2 playoff innings despite giving up three homers and posting a modest 6:3 K:BB. He'll be pitching on just three days rest, though he was only asked to throw two thirds of an inning in Game 1 on Tuesday, so he's likely able to handle something close to his typical workload.

Picks up win in Game 3
Yarbrough allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings as he earned the win Tuesday during Game 3 of the ALCS against the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough picked up the start during Game 3 of the ALCS, and he was effective as the Rays secured a 3-0 lead in the series. He allowed a solo home run in the first inning Tuesday, but he was effective the rest of the way before a leadoff home run in the sixth inning resulted in his removal. His next appearance could come in the World Series if the Rays advance.

No-decision as primary pitcher
Montgomery gave up two runs on six hits and one walk over five innings during the Game 4 loss to the Yankees on Thursday. He had one strikeout and didn't factor in the decision.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander was spared being charged with the loss as opener Ryan Thompson surrendered two runs over 1.2 innings. Yarbrough generated only three swinging strikes on 65 pitches, but he was able to hold New York in check besides the two-run homer from Gleyber Torres. It would end up being the 28-year-old's only appearance of the postseason if the Rays are unable to win Friday's Game 5 and advance to the ALCS.

Serving as primary pitcher Saturday
Yarbrough will serve as the primary pitcher for Saturday's game against the Phillies.
ANALYSIS
John Curtiss was named the opener for Saturday's contest, but it's unlikely that he'll last very long after closing out Friday's win. Yarbrough should pitch the bulk of the innings once Curtiss comes out of the game as he makes his final appearance of the regular season.

Lasts seven innings in loss
Yarbrough (1-4) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out eight over seven innings Sunday as he was charged with the loss against the Orioles.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough gave up two runs in the first inning Sunday, but he settled down and finished his outing with six scoreless frames. Unfortunately, the two runs proved to be the difference in the game as the Orioles' pitching staff put forth a dominant showing. The southpaw now has a 3.78 ERA and 40:12 K:BB over 52.1 innings after tossing a season-high eight strikeouts Sunday. Yarbrough should make his final start of the regular season at home Saturday against the Phillies.
Sep 16, 2020
Picks up first win
Yarbrough (1-3) recorded the win in Tuesday's 6-1 victory over the Nationals, allowing one run on five hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out five.
ANALYSIS
Entering the game after opener John Curtiss, Yarbrough kept Washington off the scoreboard until the sixth inning, at which point the Rays already had a 6-0 lead. The southpaw tossed 52 of 86 pitches for strikes while nudging his ERA back under 4.00. Yarbrough will look to continue a strong finish to the regular season in his next outing Sunday in Baltimore.
Sep 13, 2020
Following opener Tuesday
Yarbrough will serve as the primary pitcher Tuesday against the Nationals, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander returned from the injured list last week and surrendered four runs over 2.2 innings during his first start back, and he'll follow opener John Curtiss his next time out. Yarbrough regularly worked as a primary pitcher in 2019, but up until now he'd been working exclusively as a traditional starter this season. He has a 4.31 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 27:10 K:BB over 39.2 innings.
Sep 9, 2020
Labors in return
Yarbrough (0-3) took the loss Tuesday at Washington after giving up four runs on six hits with one walk and one strikeout across 2.2 innings.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander also hit a pair of batters as he needed 70 pitches to record only eight outs in his return from left groin soreness. Yarbrough has a 4.31 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 27:10 K:BB over 39.2 innings and lines up for another start against the Nationals next Tuesday.
Sep 8, 2020
Activated for Tuesday's start
The Rays activated Yarbrough from the 10-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Tuesday against the Nationals.
ANALYSIS
Tampa Bay optioned Trevor Richards to its alternate training site to create room on the 28-man active roster and in the rotation for Yarbrough, who was sidelined for the minimum amount of time with the sore left groin. Rays manager Kevin Cash hasn't specified that Yarbrough will face any restrictions in his return to the mound, so the lefty should make for a decent fantasy option Tuesday while facing off against a 15-25 Washington squad that could be without star outfielder Juan Soto (elbow).
Sep 7, 2020
Coming back Tuesday
The Rays plan to reinstate Yarbrough (groin) from the 10-day injured list to start Tuesday's game against the Nationals in Washington, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
In a rare bit of good news for the injury-ravaged Tampa Bay pitching staff, Yarbrough will end up missing the minimum amount of time due to the sore left groin that landed him on the IL on Aug. 29. Given the brevity of his absence, Yarbrough should be capable of handling a relatively normal workload when he returns Tuesday for his eighth start of the season. Over his first seven outings of 2020, Yarbrough has submitted a 3.65 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 26:9 K:BB in 37 innings, but he's still sitting on an 0-2 record.
Sep 6, 2020
Mid-week return expected
Yarbrough (groin) threw a successful bullpen session Friday and could be activated as early as Tuesday, the first day he's eligible to come off the injured list, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. "The bullpen went really, really well," manager Kevin Cash said. "I spoke with [pitching coach Kyle Snyder] during the game. He said [Yarbrough] looked great. I think now it's just a matter of him going through the bullpen and us finding where we're going to slot him back in."
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough appears to be on the verge on conquering the groin tightness that has sidelined him since Aug. 28. The right-hander could be ready for a return as soon as Tuesday, but if that doesn't come to pass, a Thursday activation to start against the Red Sox after Wednesday's off day seems like the next-likeliest scenario.

Throwing bullpen Friday
Yarbrough (groin) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough landed on the 10-day injured list with a left groin issue Saturday, and he felt good after playing catch Monday. He'll progress in his throwing program by throwing a bullpen session Friday, after which a better timetable for his return could be established.
Aug 31, 2020
Plays catch
Yarbrough (groin) felt good after playing catch Monday, Steve Carney of Sports Radio 620 WDAE reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough landed on the 10-day injured list with a tight left groin Saturday, but he believes that he'll only miss one start. He's been a productive pitcher through seven starts this season, posting a 3.65 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP.
Aug 29, 2020
Placed on 10-day injured list
Yarbrough (groin) was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough exited Friday's game with left groin tightness, an issue that manager Kevin Cash said had been bothering him for some time. Cash didn't sound too concerned about the issue after Friday's game, but he'll be sidelined at least 10 days as a result. It's unclear who will take the left-hander's place in the starting rotation.
Aug 28, 2020
Exits with left groin tightness
Yarbrough exited Friday's game against the Marlins with left groin tightness, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough was effective in Friday's start prior to the injury as he tossed 6.2 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and no walks while striking out five. The severity of the injury is unclear, and whether he misses any additional time remains to be seen. If he's able to make his next turn through the rotation, he should take the mound on the road Wednesday against the Yankees.
Aug 27, 2020
Thursday's start postponed
Yarbrough's scheduled start Thursday against the Orioles was postponed, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The teams elected not to take the field Thursday in protest following the police shooting of Jacob Blake. It's unclear when the game will be made up or how the Rays will adjust their starting rotation.
Aug 22, 2020
Fans six in no-decision
Yarbrough allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out six over 6.1 innings in Friday's loss to the Blue Jays. He didn't factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough's last start was cut short due to rain, but he matched his longest start of the season Friday by going 6.1 innings. Unfortunately, he gave up four runs in the second inning that forced him to settle for his third straight no-decision. The southpaw was fairly effective outside of the second inning, but he now carries a 4.45 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 30.1 innings across six starts this year. He'll attempt to pick up his first win at home Wednesday against the Orioles.
Aug 16, 2020
Start halted by rain
Yarbrough pitched three scoreless innings against Toronto on Saturday, yielding four hits and striking out two. The game was suspended due to rain.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough wasn't spotless in the performance -- he left runners stranded in scoring position in two of his three frames -- but the southpaw managed to escape both jams and finish his three innings up 1-0. Unfortunately, he won't be able to earn a win for his effort as the game was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning and is slated to be made up Sunday morning. Yarbrough's next turn in the rotation will come Friday at home in a rematch against Toronto.
Aug 11, 2020
Shaky in no-decision
Yarbrough didn't factor into the decision in Monday's 8-7 win over the Red Sox, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out one.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw didn't have his best stuff, getting tagged for three runs in the first inning, but Yarbrough was able to settle down and limit the damage the rest of the way. He threw 49 of 77 pitches for strikes as he failed to complete at least five innings for the first time in four starts. Yarbrough will look to give the Rays a little more length in his next outing, currently scheduled for this weekend in Buffalo against the Blue Jays.
Aug 5, 2020
Burned by long ball
Yarbrough (0-2) allowed five earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out five across five innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Red Sox.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough had a scoreless outing through 3.2 innings, but surrendered a two-run home run to Alex Verdugo to open the scoring. He completely fell apart in the sixth inning, as he allowed all five batters he faced to reach base, with the big blow being a two-run home run off the bat of Michael Chavis. Despite the poor outing, Yarbrough has maintained a 3.78 ERA across 16.2 innings to begin the season. His next start is currently projected for Monday in a rematch against the Red Sox.

Fans six in loss
Yarbrough (0-1) was charged with the loss against the Braves on Thursday, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out six across 6.1 innings.
ANALYSIS
Despite the loss, it was another solid outing for the 28-year-old. Yarbrough worked his way into a second inning jam after giving up a single to Marcell Ozuna, hitting Adam Duvall with a pitch, then allowing Dansby Swanson to score Ozuna on an RBI single. He soon surrendered Atlanta's final run of the night on a sacrifice fly to Austin Riley. It was an otherwise effective performance as the southpaw threw 56 of 87 pitches for strikes. Unfortunately, his teammates failed to provide enough run support to get him the win. The biggest surprise for Yarbrough was the three free passes he issued, which were his most walks given up since an August 5, 2018 contest against the White Sox. He'll look to bounce back on Wednesday against the Red Sox.
Jul 25, 2020
Effective in first start
Yarbrough took a no-decision in Saturday's contest over the Blue Jays in spite of pitching 5.1 scoreless innings. He yielded four hits and one walk while striking out one.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough looked much like the effective pitcher he was from May to August of 2019, limiting Toronto to four harmless singles and issuing only one free pass. He registered just one strikeout, but that's par for the course for the soft-throwing southpaw. Yarbrough was pulled after 69 pitches, preventing him from earning a win or a quality start, so his performance could have been better from a fantasy perspective. Still, it was refreshing to see the 28-year-old thrive after struggling down the stretch last season, and he should work his way to higher pitcher counts as the season progresses. Yarbrough will get a chance to build on his promising start to the campaign when he faces Atlanta on the road Thursday.
Jul 21, 2020
Heavy workload in final tune-up
Yarbrough worked up to 87 pitches during Monday's intrasquad start, his final outing before a scheduled start in the second game of the season versus the Blue Jays, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw corroborated his ability to eat up some innings right from the onset of the season with Monday's effort. Yarbrough did run into some trouble, however, allowing five earned runs across 4.1 innings. That aside, Yarbrough has looked good in previous simulated game opportunities during summer camp and put together a 11-6 record, 4.13 ERA and 1.00 WHIP across 28 appearances (14 starts) in 2019.

Helps rotation chances in sim game
Yarbrough's performance in Wednesday's simulated game, when he threw 3.1 innings, helped his chances of solidifying a rotation spot, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. "Like I said in spring training, and it's still my goal right now, it's just to continue to show them and prove to them that I could be a full-time starter," Yarbrough said. "We have a couple of outings to continue to show that and prove to them that long term this is what I want to do and best help the team."
ANALYSIS
The versatile southpaw faced the foursome of Willy Adames, Brandon Lowe, Ji-Man Choi and Mike Zunino, and he allowed just one hit while recording three strikeouts during his time on the mound. Yarbrough came away pleased with the opportunity to once again face hitters and throw to one of the team's catchers, as well as the chance to continue to prove worthy of a rotation spot. Manager Kevin Cash also heaped praise on the 28-year-old, noting the Rays would not have gotten as far as they did in 2019 without Yarbrough's efforts. It's also worth noting that with Tyler Glasnow and Yonny Chirinos both currently away from summer camp workouts for undisclosed reasons, the Rays actually find themselves short-handed on starting pitchers with less than three weeks to go before Opening Day.

Gets work off a mound
Yarbrough was able to throw off a mound at Tropicana Field on Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Friday marked the first time pitchers gained access to the mounds at Tropicana Field since workouts resumed there May 25, and Yarbrough took advantage of the opportunity by throwing 15-25 pitches to a pair of bullpen catchers. Pitching coach Kyle Snyder, who oversaw the throwing sessions for multiple Rays hurlers, came away impressed with the readiness of all who participated, an assessment which bodes well for Yarbrough's outlook as he begins to ramp up his workload again.
May 21, 2020
Unique season could lead to starts
Yarbrough, who the Rays have seemed hesitant to anoint a full-fledged member of the rotation in the past, will likely have an enhanced opportunity for regular starts during an abbreviated 2020 season, Josh Tolentino of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The southpaw fought through some adversity in 2019 to put together a solid season, one that saw him reach double-digit wins (11) for the second time in as many big-league campaigns and also finish third in WHIP (1.00) in the AL behind only Justin Verlander (0.80) and Gerrit Cole (0.89). Yarbrough was also a versatile workhorse for manager Kevin Cash, as the 28-year-old's 141.2 innings were second only to Charlie Morton's 194.2 on the Rays. Yarbrough ultimately logged 28 appearances despite being sent down to Triple-A Durham on three occasions last season, but Cash still hadn't fully committed to him as a regular starter before spring training was suspended. However, the fact the Rays had already planned on deploying a "bullpen day" strategy much less in 2020 -- and that they now may look to manage starter's workloads more carefully due to an abbreviated ramp-up period to an abbreviated season -- both figure to solidify Yarbrough's chances of becoming a full-fledged member of the rotation.

Set for some traditional starts
Yarbrough was in line to operate as a traditional starter on occasion in 2020 when spring training was suspended, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough certainly inspired confidence with his body of work during Grapefruit League play, allowing just one unearned run across six innings over three spring appearances. The southpaw filled a number of roles for manager Kevin Cash last season, making 14 starts in his 26 appearances and frequently serving as a bulk reliever following an opener when working out of the bullpen. Topkin notes Yarbrough could certainly see time in the latter capacity this coming season, but adds the Rays may also use an opener less frequently in 2020 than in the past two campaigns.
Mar 13, 2020
Looks good in sim game
Yarbrough threw 60 pitches over four innings in a simulated game Tuesday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander faced Nate Lowe, Mike Zunino and Daniel Robertson while working with Kevan Smith as his battery mate. Yarbrough threw 40 of 60 pitches for strikes and once again made a strong impression in his bid for a spot in the starting rotation. As it turns out, it was Yarbrough's last spring opportunity to do so now that the rest of the exhibition ledger has been wiped out due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but manager Kevin Cash took note of how good his potential No. 5 starter looked. "His ball moves everywhere," Cash said. "The late movement that he can create is really, really impressive. You understand why he's had so much success in his first two seasons."
Mar 6, 2020
Continues bid for starting role
Yarbrough fired three scoreless innings during which he allowed three hits and no walks in a Grapefruit League win over the Pirates on Thursday. He struck out two.
ANALYSIS
The left-hander continued his stellar start to spring at the expense of a Pittsburgh lineup with multiple regulars, pushing spring training scoreless streak to six innings. Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports Yarbrough threw 43 pitches, 32 of which found the strike zone, and that despite allowing the leadoff man to get on in each inning, the 28-year-old was pleased with the extra work those slight struggles allowed him to get in. Yarbrough isn't likely to find out whether his quest for a spot in the starting rotation is successful until the end of Grapefruit League play, but he's certainly making a strong case thus far.
Feb 25, 2020
Striving for rotation spot
Yarbrough, who's often served as a bulk reliever behind an opener over the last two seasons, is vying to secure a role as a traditional starter this spring, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old did log starts in half of his 28 appearances last season along the way to an 11-6 record, 4.13 ERA and 1.00 WHIP across 141. 2 innings. Yarbrough made a favorable first impression by throwing 14 of 21 pitches for strikes in a scoreless first inning against the Yankees on Sunday, and he boasts a five-pitch repertoire that includes a trademark cutter that he complements with a sinker, changeup, curveball and four-seam fastball. Manager Kevin Cash has already stated he still plans to split Yarbrough's work between the rotation and bullpen again this season, but that won't stop the right-hander from chasing his goal of full-time starter. "It's one of those things where I just try and show them, I've come in and shown I can compete for that [starter] role and prove to them that I can do that," Yarbrough said. "Obviously, that's in my thought process a little bit."
Feb 12, 2020
Role not certain
Yarbrough's role isn't certain heading into the season, Josh Tolentino of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Yarbrough served as one of the Rays' signature "bulk guys" in 2018 and part of 2019 before becoming a proper starter in the middle of the season. He finished the year with a respectable 4.13 ERA, a 20.8 percent strikeout rate and an excellent 3.6 percent walk rate in 141.2 innings. His eventual role may not matter too much from a fantasy perspective, as he'll still have a chance to pick up wins as a bulk reliever when the Rays' opener doesn't last five innings, and he'll handle a fairly heavy workload regardless of exactly which innings he pitches.
